Campaign Overview The Mill reached a consolidated figure of 3.8 million viewers in the first episode – the highest for a Channel 4 drama since This is England '88 in 2010. There was a huge media build up to The Mill across print, broadcast and online with a total of 15 national and 12 regional features, nine comment pieces, three listing magazine front covers, over 60 previews, and 15 reviews. Broadcast coverage ranged from BBC Breakfast and Lorraine to Front Row and Saturday Review. The Mill was discussed extensively in think pieces as part of a general debate on quality drama. Two screenings were held with cast, crew, production and commissioning – one in London, to position it as a gripping drama with high production values, and the other in Quarry Bank Mill, hosted by the National Trust, to engage Northern audiences. A trailer ran across all relevant Channel 4 channels as well as one primetime ITV spot and some ITV3 drama spots. Strong photographs - including portrait shots of key cast as well as documentary style images were at the heart of the campaign. A meticulously researched press pack, with historical background, was produced as a media resource, together with links to behind-the-scenes films.

ONE TO WATCH Field Of Blood

BBC One, 9pm

What has happened to British TV drama lately? After a few years in the doldrums, it’s actually become rather good, with a few series standing out as must-sees. The likes of Broadchurch and The Fall have already kept us on the edge of our seats this year, while Channel 4’s The MillandSouthcliffecouldwell do the same. The second series of Field of Blood looks rather impressivetoo, particularlyasformer Coronation Street star and Mr Selfridge regular Katherine Kelly is joining the cast - seeing her and David Morrissey on screen together is fantastic; their chemistry is electric. Kelly plays Maloney, the fiercely ambitious new editor-in chief sent up by the Londonbossestodragthefailing newspaper back from the brink of closure. “She’s absolutely ruthless, she’ll step over anybody,” says Kelly of her character. “She has no morals, no principles - it’s all about getting the story. “It’s been great for me to play an out-and-out baddie. She’s a woman succeeding in a man’s world and she’s come down to their level really. But shealsousesthefactthatshe’s awomantogettothenextlevel in her career. She’s not really very likeable to be honest.” It’s not all bad though: “There are tiny glimmers of

softness. Underneath the big shoulders there’s a woman, but her softer side has been so pushed down so that if it was once there it’s barely seen now.” The first run was all about troubled young woman Paddy Meehan; this time the action is set a few years later in 1984, and Paddy, played by Jayd Johnson, has undergone an evolution in both her personal and professional lives. She’s embarked on a flirtation with a police officer and landed her dream job as a reporter on the Daily News. While out looking for stories alongside the more seasoned George McVie, she stumbles across an incident that they initially dismiss as a domestic disturbance. Soon, it emerges that what’s really at play is something much more sinister involving kidnap, murder, political conspiracy and police corruption. The investigation into the crime is fascinating, but it’s the story developing behind the scenes involving Maloney and editor Devlin (Morrissey) that will keep you gripped. “It’s a sort of love-hate relationship,” explains Kelly. “For himit’sprobablyjustpurehate but for her it’s complicated. “Part of her hates him because he’s lived his life the opposite way to her - his approach has been completely different from Maloney’s. He’s got to where he is by doing it the moral way, he’s got the trustofhisteam,he’sgotthem

on side. And he’s a man so she thinks it’s easier for him.

A century before Downton Abbey, at the Quarry Bank Mill, Cheshire, the social divisions are even starker than they will be in the Earl of Grantham’s home. While the Greg family grow wealthy, at their factory apprentice children work 12-hour days with dangerous machinery. Yet dismiss any thought that this is a worthy portrayal of how it was ‘grim up north’. Filmed at the actual workhouse and based on the apprentices’ own words from the National Trust archive, this entirely credible depiction of the past is also utterly enthralling drama. Misfits star Matthew McNulty is Daniel Bate, a brilliant engineer with

radical political notions, while Kerrie Hayes (Good Cop) plays defiantly proud apprentice Esther. But the script from Clocking Off writer John Fay is far too nuanced to be a simple story of dark satanic mills and industrialists: though tough-minded, the Gregs also have progressive notions. An opening episode packed with twists will leave you on tenterhooks until next week.

Saturday Review 28 27 July 2013 407720 Unattributed

The Mill Channel 4, 8pm The Mill is Channel 4’s first fact-based period drama, the latest serial after the BBC’s The Village to reveal the harsh realities of life in our not too distant past. Set in 1830, it is based on the extensive historical archive of Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire and depicts Britain at a time when the industrial revolution is changing the country beyond recognition. Like The Village, the predominant mood is one of gloom. The mill workers (some as young as nine, working 12-hour shifts) wash in troughs of freezing cold water and are fed vile-looking gruel directly into their hands — even Oliver Twist had a bowl. In the first five minutes, while one girl is being raped, a boy gets his hand mangled in some heavy machinery. Times were hard is the message, forcefully rammed home. But times are about to change thanks to Esther Price (Kerrie Hayes, above), a stroppy teenager well documented in Quarry Bank’s archives, who risks her own position to stand up for justice. There are no real stars, but a strong ensemble cast, including Donald Sumpter as the austere yet kindly master of the mill, and Matthew McNulty as a progressive young engineer with a troubled past. It’s well written by John Fay, the former Coronation Street writer, who knows how to pen convincing dialogue, and while grimly fascinating, it may well prove too depressing for many.
