(Source: www.namibia.org.za) TIP: Keep enough South African rand at hand because it will be accepted at all border posts. Namibia is a very popular destination for South Africans and during their June/July school holidays you may experience increased traffic and subsequent delays at the major border posts. In severe circumstances delays of a couple of hours have been reported. Rather plan to overnight close to the border post if you travel at the beginning or end of the holiday so that you can cross early in the morning when everybody is still fresh and friendly.

At the end of their stay on Impalila Island, guests exit via Namibian immigration and are brought back by boat and re-enter Botswana at the office in Kasane. There is also an airstrip on Impalila Island for access by air.

Namibia & Botswana Grand Tour (With thanks to namibia-forum.ch)
THE NAMIBIA & BOTSWANA Grand Tour aims to introduce you to the top attractions of two countries. Of course, you won’t see everything that Namibia and Botswana have to offer but it’s a great start, a good way to get to know the lay of the land. This route visits some National Parks where an off-road vehicle is required. If you are driving a 2WD vehicle, you should make the following changes. On Day 12, take a trip to Chobe National Park with one of the game lodges, in their vehicle. On Day 13, drive south to Elephants Sands on the A33. From here you can go on various off-road day trips in the lodges’ vehicles. On Day 14, drive south to Nata and then west on the A3 to Planet Baobab, a lodge which offers various trips and activities. From here, you’ll drive through to Maun where you can pick up the rest of the original route, Day 19 onwards.

DURATION Windhoek to Windhoek: 21 days 4 410 km If driving from and returning to Cape Town, add: 4 days and 3 200 km to your itinerary. If driving from and returning to Johannesburg, start in Maun and add: 4 days and 2 300 km to your itinerary.

This tour has also been designed as a clockwise circular route starting and ending in Windhoek. But there’s nothing to stop you from driving it in a counter clockwise direction, or beginning and ending the tour in Maun, Botswana.
Day 1: ARRIVE IN WINDHOEK (50 km – 45 min) It is important to stay the first night in Windhoek. Whether you’ve flown in, or driven to Windhoek, the chances are good that you’ll be tired. On your arrival there’s still quite a lot to do. Pick up your rental vehicle if you’re getting one and take the time to get acquainted with it. Stock up on provisions and fill up your tanks. If you’ve still got time, take in a city tour and then end off the day with dinner at the famous Joe’s Beerhouse. 69
KAOKOLAND
A Himba kraal deep in the Marienfluss. (photo: Mietsie Visser)
IT’S ONE OF THE LAST remaining wilderness areas in Africa, so it’s not surprising that Kaokoland attracts hardcore travellers and explorers. Make no mistake, you must be self-sufficient and an experienced off-road traveller if you’re going to venture into this remote region in the extreme north-western corner of Namibia. Do your preparations and you’ll experience a harsh but nevertheless beautiful and rewarding journey. You definitely need an off-road vehicle to tour Kaokoland and you’d be wise not to take a trailer. Seriously consider taking a satellite phone if you travel Kaokoland on your own. The routes here are dusty sand or gravel roads, often no more than simple tracks; they can easily become flooded depending on the season or a nearby rainstorm. If you’re an off-road driving enthusiast or a very skilled adventure bike rider, you might want to tackle the notorious Van Zyl’s Pass. The Kaokoland landscape ranges from sweeping plains, to rugged mountains and dry riverbeds seamed with lush riparian bush. It deserves your respect, so be an eco-traveller and don’t create track pollution; stay on the beaten tracks or roads and don’t disturb any plants, especially the Welwitschia (no matter what size or age). As in Damaraland, you have to be aware of desert elephant, especially in the dry riverbeds. The desert elephants are not used to humans and they don’t like being disturbed. They have a comfort zone of at least 500m and are best observed from afar. As the dry riverbeds belong to them, you are advised to rather stay out of there. Chances are good that you might also encounter rhino, lion and leopard.

Epupa Falls
383 - A1 Epupa Falls, as seen from the air. (photo: Heiner Dillmann)
ON THE OTHER SIDE of the Kunene river in Angola, Epupa Falls are known as the Monte Negro Falls. The river is half a kilometre wide at this point and features a series of waterfalls ranging from 1.5m to 37m in height. Epupa is a Herero word meaning foam, named after the foam created by the falling water. These unique falls form a habitat for a few endemic fish and other aquatic species. Traveller Description It’s recommended that you travel from Opuwo to the falls with an off-road vehicle. Even though the falls are difficult to reach it’s still a major tourist attraction in Namibia. What makes it so special is the unspoilt environment, an area covered with fig trees, Baobabs and Makalani palms. The falls are framed by walls of coloured rock. There are two possible routes from Epupa Falls to Ruacana Falls. The inland route via Okangwati is about 160km along good dirt roads and takes a morning. The off-road route next to the river is very scenic but takes one to two days, depending on the water level. Avoid this one if you’re towing and/or driving alone. During the rainy season (December to March) the route can be a technical challenge.
Travel Info Polka 24hr tow-in is based in Okahandja and services this area +264(0)81 129 7490. Alternative tow-in numbers: +264(0)62 500 132 or +264(0)62 504 250.
TRAVEL TIP! Contact local tour guide, Joao Murotua, on +264(0)81 276 6019 if you wish to visit a Himba village or do hiking trails. He has a vast knowledge on crocodiles, trees and birds found here. Some 240 bird species have been recorded in the Kunene region, including specials like the bare-cheeked babbler, rufous-tailed palm-thrush and scarlet chested sunbird.
