Try Ulcer Aid Today!
ORDER ONLINE Causes and Why?? Horse's Get Ulcers Acid released in the stomach in the absence of feed is thought to be the main factor in the disease. Horses evolved as grazing animals, constantly eating high roughage diets. However, a majority of the time this just isn’t possible and our modern racing stables horses are often confined and fed 2 hard feeds a day with low levels of roughage - their stomach is often empty for many hours of the day and stomach acid is continuously secreted, which can irritate and ulcerate the stomach lining. With no eating there is no chewing, so there is less saliva to neutralise the acid. As the acid splashes across the upper side of the stomach it eats away the lining to form, sometimes within days, deep bleeding ulcers, this pain leads to the list of clinical signs mentioned in this brochure. A stomach ulcer is an area where the membrane comprised of mucus producing cells has been eroded away and the acid has been able to attack the muscular wall beneath. This causes pain and inflammation and can cause bleeding into the stomach which is debilitating and can be potentially life threatening. The horse's stomach is similar to ours except there are two regions. One region is coated with a thicker type of lining than the other, which is largely lined with glandular cells. This glandular portion is most similar to our own stomach. The stomach lining produces both acid and mucus. The mucus protects the lining cells from being damaged by the acid which is necessary to help digest food. Horses produce small amounts of acid all of the time compared to other species which produce acid primarily when they eat. This makes sense when we consider that horses are "designed" to eat most of time since they are grazing animals. Stress increases the amount of acid being produced in the stomach. In addition, certain commonly used anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as phenylbutazone ("bute"), Flunixin, banamine or ketofen dipyrone, aspirin may decrease the amount of mucus produced in the stomach. Severe Ulcers can develop in as little as 5 days. Nervy horses seem to have a higher risk of stomach ulcers, due to the stress of training together with the high energy feeds.

Symptoms or Signs Of Gastric Ulcers Nervousness/irritation Loose stools – not formed. Poor looking or dry coat. A change in eating behaviour. Grinding teeth and/or, excessive chewing on objects or tongue. They are girthy. Mild to moderate colic. Biting soil in the day yard – Has you thinking they are lacking in something? Washing or dunking food in water bucket. Fail to gain or maintain weight. Ill-thrift in foals. Not eating as well as usual and quite often they will eat hay/pasture, but will not eat the grain and concentrate, or will only eat the latter very slowly. Lowered red blood cell count and haemoglobin levels, this is because if ulcers are bleeding, the blood is lost into the bowel and then out in the manure. Not performing as well as they had been, has trained off. Blood in the manure - if the horse has a history of being on NSAIDs (bute etc) due to a musculoskeletal problem (eg. severe and chronic lameness). This can be due to bleeding ulcers in the large intestine (specifically in a place called the “right dorsal colon”).

t’s hard to believe, but another racing season is drawing to a close and, with the Brisbane carnival signalling the completion of Group One racing for 2009/10, a fair amount of ‘ink’ will be devoted over the next few weeks to our horse of the year.

Magic mare, Typhoon Tracy appears to have a lock on the championship belt with four victories at the elite level – against her own sex and in weight for age events – but Starspangledbanner won a Caulfield Guineas and an Oakleigh Plate and, should he win in England, there might be a few votes go his way.

In NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia, there will be new title holders with only Queensland’s Robert Heathcote set to retain his spot at the head of the table. Furthermore, in every state bar WA, the leading trainer will have produced more winners than the previous year and, perhaps not surprisingly, mostly at a superior strike rate. Yet, despite the fait accompli, two trainers deserve special mention: Peter Moody and Mark Kavanagh. Moody has managed to topple the Hayes-Freedman duopoly in Melbourne for the first time since 1977 when the late Geoff Murphy snatched the premiership and it’s unlikely he’ll willingly hand it back. Well done Peter. But the real mover and shaker is Mark Kavanagh. Although fourth in Melbourne through the middle of June, he’s nearly doubled last year’s haul, while in Adelaide he’s a shoo in for the title with a winner for every 3.4 starts: an incredible strike rate. I hope you enjoy the diverse editorial in this issue and please note that we’ll be running a special feature in the next issue on yearling preparation … just in time for sale entries!

DANISH A mare for the ages Les Bridge has been round a while. Matter of fact, they reckon he started training back in 1965 and, to put that into some sort of perspective, it was the year Bart Cummings trained his first Melbourne Cup winner. Back then we also paid for stuff with pounds, shillings and pence … and the hills were alive with the Sound of Music. Now Les, while not the first name on everyone’s lips when it comes to leading Sydney trainers, has pretty much achieved it all too, taking out the big two: the Melbourne Cup with Kensei in 1987 and the Golden Slipper four years earlier with Sir Dapper. Yet, despite the countless horses he’s saddled up, clocked and cheered, it’s a relative newcomer on the block that’s taking pride of place. >>

“So, without her urging me to look again I may not have bought the filly”.
AYING $32,000 for a yearling is hardly headline material. So, when Les Bridge forked out that amount for the Nothin’ Leica Dane filly from Hot ‘n’ Breezy at the 2005 Scone Yearling Sale, no-one really blinked an eye. After all, a few weeks earlier, the Inghams had paid $2,500,000 for a half brother to Makybe Diva and Les’ ‘dalliance’ kinda paled by comparison. Still, it would be the most expensive Nothin’ Leica Dane that year and, although he had a Group Two winner and a couple of stakes horses to his credit, bookings had dropped the previous spring to 50 mares from a high of 147. The catalogue page didn’t present well either: plenty of wins and winners, but no black type in the first five dams.
" MY WIFE SAID TO ME, YOU’VE ONLY LOOKED AT HER FOR FIVE MINUTES … GO AND HAVE ANOTHER LOOK AT HER"
Les obviously had good reason to ante up though. The filly’s 3YO full brother – Prince Frederik – had picked up a couple of

cheques in town by that stage and, some two months after Les’ Scone trip, notched up his sole career victory when successful at Canterbury (Prince Frederik only once finished without a cheque in seven starts including four seconds in town). The Randwick mentor also had intervention from a higher power – the missus: “My wife said to me, you’ve only looked at her for five minutes … go and have another look at her. “She was back at the knee, but I suppose that’s a fault of many of the Danehill line … a bit like him. I didn’t have my veterinarian that I normally consult with at that sale and I sort of went to water.

at the end of September ’06 and was then tipped out until the autumn. Returning on 9 February, it would be a heady two months for Bridge and company with Hot Danish peeling off four straight victories: Canterbury, Warwick Farm, the Nolan Classic at Kembla (her first stakes success) and, triumphantly, the Group Two Emancipation Stakes at Randwick. The world appeared to be Hot Danish’s oyster … then tragedy struck. “She had a bad injury and I watched for three hours with (veterinary surgeon) Percy Sykes as they operated on her to fix a sheath injury,” Les recalls. “The concern at the time was to save her life as a broodmare … then when she came back to racing she had to have a year off because of EI (equine influenza).”

Then, when Hot Danish dropped back to sixth in running, Les could have been thinking he was going to leave Queensland without even a sun tan. STUD PROFILE
Think Big Stud hoping to
LIVE UP TO THE NAME Dato Tan Chin Nam is one of the most recognisable names in Australian racing largely through his association with the Cups king Bart Cummings. Now he may become just as well known off the track via his recently established Think Big Stud. STEVE MORAN spoke to manager DUNCAN RAMAGE about the operation in the southern highlands of New South Wales.
S
M: WHAT'STHE OVER-RIDING philosophy of the stud. Does commercial mean almost 100% commercial?
DR: Every venture Dato Tan Chin Nam undertakes must be considered as commercial and prosper on it's own merits, so the philosophy of the stud is totally commercial. If that commercial return is via selling weanlings, yearlings and stallion prospects or stallion fees or successfully demonstrated, the return has to justify the outlay. SM: You have two impeccably credentialled stallions who are affordable...is the hope you attract a niche market at the price perhaps for those looking to breed more classic or staying type horses? DR: The Australasian stallion ranks continue to demonstrate that the locally raced horse more often than not out performs their shuttle peers.Think Big has two modestly priced stallions that have the opportunity to do just that. It is often harder for the local stallion to start off in the higher echelons of service fees. Encosta De Lago is a best case example of that, he started in Victoria at less that $10,000 and we hope that history repeats with the Think Big Stud stallions. We have >>

also seen a gradual swing back towards the middle distances by breeders as buyers are more willing to select that type of racehorse. Just look at the winning distances of the leading prizemoney earners. Think Big has the stallions to fit into that profile. SM: How would you describe your overall role thesedays - with the stud, DGR racing, working with Bart etc? DR: I am still primarily an agent whose main trade is the yearling market. I continue as agent for some long established clientele buying yearlings but also broodmare prospects and horses in training. The stud, since it's inception in 2007, has taken on a larger role and of course I continue to work closely with the "master", because much of our success stems from the racetrack and Leilani Lodge.

We with Dato begin/unfold and how got off to a good start and he gave me more commissions to passionate is he about the stud? buy and gradually the budget DR: Dato was introduced to me sometimes increased. Dato' is by Bart in 1990. I had a modest very passionate about all his budget to buy a yearling at the racing interests and the stud activities. We have daily debriefs where ever he is in the World and is keen to see the stud become a legacy of his name. I know who is ringing at 8.30am and 8.30pm on the dot each day. He does not muck out the stables, but he is very LIVEANDLETDIE AS A YEARLING hands on! 20
www.tracktotrack.com
DR: I think Dato's long term goal for the stud is to make it a legacy of his name in racing. He is not frightened to sell a good horse as a yearling, offering in recent years - by way of example - the Group winning fillies Marheta, Sidera & Faint Perfume and interesting two year olds like Liveandletdie. We have also sold his interests in class colts going to stud, again by recent example - God's Own & Wonderful World and he has retained Pendragon and Prince Arthur for stallion duties. Dato currently has interests in a number of prominent racing colts like So You Think, Roman Emperor and the young Kudakulari who will follow the same pattern of being sold or retained subject to the market response. SM: Were you satisfied with how the Pendragon's were assessed/ sold at Easter? DR: For a young stallion off a $8,000 service to be represented in the main Easter session is a testament to the horse and the stud. To average $145,000 at Easter and $92,500 nationally with those horses going into the stables of Freedman, Henrich, Size and Cummings is a great start. Now the hard work begins to keep up the momentum. One of Bart's phrases is "self praise is no recommendation" but I will allow myself to back my own judgement of the young yearlings by Pendragon already in training at Leilani Lodge, that they are of the class to continue Dato's success on the racetrack.

DEAN GRASS Getting the right breaks It’s probably a hangover from watching far too many westerns, but I always thought horse breakers were a little bit crazy. And maybe not just a little bit.
T
HINK ABOUT IT for a minute. While the risk factor may not be up there with lion taming or hand feeding crocodiles at the zoo, getting into a roundyard with some feral that’s inbred six times to Sir Tristram is not something most people willingly do. A lot of bucks on one hand … not enough bucks in the other!
That said, Dean Grass seems normal enough. There’s no facial tic and he doesn’t talk like he’s had 17 cups of black coffee before breakfast. Then again, Dean – like so many in the trade – appeared pre-destined to become a horse breaker. His old man was one and a pretty good one at that too. >>
www.tracktotrack.com
23
As for Dean, he’s been hopping on since he could walk: developing the tricks of the trade from around the age of 10. And although Dean has only been directing much of his energies toward the thoroughbred racehorse for the past six or so years, his breaking in and pretraining business is effectively a lifetime in the making.
Dean decided on tackling thoroughbreds and aside from a small team in work at the Victorian provincial track of Pakenham, the ‘education’ side of his business continues to grow rapidly … well, at least as fast as word of mouth allows. And, never fear, word is travelling fast. Not one to push his own wagon, Dean puts his burgeoning popularity down to his ability to look at the bigger picture. “Anyone can break in an easy horse,” Dean points out (although clearly not taking into account those journalists whose only experience at lunging is when they call for last drinks).
Like most kids growing up on a farm, Dean’s chores were – shall we say – multi-faceted. While there’s no diploma for mucking out boxes, Dean did become the 1997 Victorian Farmers Federation Apprentice of the Year and, as a consequence, travelled to Minnesota in the States for six months to observe farming techniques. Also a dab hand at the smithy caper, Dean would extend his US tour by four months, travelling through the mid west with the American Farriers Team: the elite blacksmiths in North America.
“However, when you get a difficult horse you need to be able to look at the problems facing you from a number of different angles. “That’s where I guess my experience with so many breeds of horses comes in handy. “First of all, let me say that there are a lot of outstanding breakers in the thoroughbred industry. Fantastic guys who can sum up a horse quickly and work around problems.
“Horses that aren’t properly educated only lead to problems further down the track. There’s nothing worse for a trainer than getting a horse from the breakers that won’t settle properly and gives riders a difficult time.
“MY AIM IS TO HAND OVER HORSES THAT ARE RESPONSIVE, SOFT AND SUPPLE THAT CAN TRAVEL IN A CALM WAY … HORSES THAT ARE SAFE TO RIDE.”
Now 37, Dean’s pursuits have seen him compete in Western performance, Showjumping and Rodeos, plus driven events with Clydesdales and harness horses.
With that ‘rounded’ resume, 24
www.tracktotrack.com
“But there’s also a lot of ordinary breakers out there too. They can take a horse so far, but are often found wanting if ‘issues’ develop.
“And we all know that racehorse ownership is not a cheap exercise. Having your horse re-educated only leads to further and unnecessary expense.
“It’s probably a phrase that’s used far too much, but each horse is an individual and needs to be treated as such. >>

“What works for one may well work for another … but not for all. “I’ll often take an approach from three or four different angles, but one of the advantages with thoroughbreds – as opposed to some other breeds – is that they are usually educated young. The older they get, they quite often become more stubborn. “My aim is to hand over horses that are responsive, soft and supple that can travel in a calm way … horses that are safe to ride. “Balance is extremely important: horses that are jammed up in front are no good to anyone. “I put in a lot of groundwork in giving them a good foundation – handle them a lot and work on their
manners. There is plenty of ‘pressure and reward’. “Bottom line is, when they leave my place they need to confident and relaxed and that they won’t overreact in certain situations.” While education and pre-training remains the core of his operation, Dean likes to keep a couple of horses in work, but has no plans on having a huge stable. “I really enjoy training, but would always only want to have manageable numbers. I have nothing but admiration for those trainers with big teams, but I’m more than happy to keep a personal approach to each horse. Every horse has a different temperament, different requirements. “I’ve also developed a feeding program so that the dietary requirements of each horse is adequately maintained.
“We have a 50 acre property at Garfield and my aim is to develop a training track, additional stables and improving pastures.
“It’s also a real thrill to watch horses that I’ve broken in or
pre-trained get up and do the right thing on race day.”
Just don’t be too surprised to see a horse Dean has broken in, pre-trained AND trained winning at a track near you. After all, experience aside, Dean Grass is highly motivated and dedicated to the cause. Indeed, when conducting this interview (late on a very cold, wintry Friday evening when most of us were either in a warm pub or heated home), Dean was still playing teacher to a troublesome student. How crazy is that?

There is much value in buying products from family run businesses in Australia. This is because you know you are getting dedication and this combined with nutritional expertise, means the business owners have a far greater vested interest in your satisfaction than a major corporation.
M
EADOWLANDS Animal Supplies is a family run business dedicated to furthering the health and wellbeing of horses. That’s all horses, but they have a rather large soft spot for the race horse in particular The headquarters is based in Brisbane and its unique ePro (Equine Professional) product range is distributed nationally. “The key thing and really the foundation of what I have tried to build with the three key ePro supplements in particular, is that they are whey protein concentrate and isolate powder based products,” explains Meadowlands founder, Lisa Gordon, the accomplished rider and dedicated horse lover who runs this swiftly emerging company.
28
www.tracktotrack.com
Whey protein, as most racing people would know, is really the Rolls Royce of protein sources available currently. To achieve and ensure the highest of quality blends are met every time, the ePro supplements are made with human grade whey protein powders, which is also the base of most supplements used in the body building/ fitness industry and by elite athletes,” she said. Lisa founded Meadowlands Animal Supplies because she knew getting the absolute best of feeds and nutrients into a performance horse would make it …hmm, perform better. She grabbed a highly regarded nutritionist in Mariette van den Berg to get the mixture right and that’s how Meadowlands began. Lisa now wants racehorse trainers to weigh into the whey protein powder phenomena. “Human grade whey protein powders go through much tighter control and manufacturing processes than stock feed grade whey protein powders. This means the powders used for my blends will always have to meet specific rules and regulations to even make the cut. Using human grade necessitates a standard of manufacturing quality
control that far exceeds the stock grade requirements. Our ePro delivers a premium experience for the horse, the rider and owner as a result.” Now while that sounds like your typical marketing spiel, bear with her on this for a moment. Racehorses need power and especially power to weight ratio. If the strictest of measures have been applied by the controlling bodies to ensure whey protein powder is pure and operating at its optimal, the trainer will get a better racehorse. Maybe not a faster one, but a healthier and stronger one for sure. And when you come to the home bend tightly jammed up, the ones with thick chests and that look of anger in their eyes are the ones who burst clear of pockets and out of trouble. Lisa, having ground her teeth from the dusty rings of eventing knows a thing or two about getting the best out of performance horses. She is quite the advocate for protein in equine diets. “Protein is the primary component in all body tissues. The main functions of proteins include building and repairing of body tissues (e.g. muscles, ligaments, tendons, skin), regulation of body processes and formation of enzymes and hormones. Protein also forms antibodies and hemoglobin. These are critical things to enhance if you want a horse to run fast,” she added. The concept of the ePro range of products was born and manufacture began last year. And today,as you read this, Meadowlands Animal Supplies can help with every aspect of the equine lifecycle, from pregnancy to foaling, from yearling to mature, high performance champions and studs. If you own or train a racehorse, you should contact Lisa. - By Ric Chapman

MALUA A monument to versatility We don’t often delve into the dim, dark past to entertain and inform our loyal band of readers, but a recent visit to Tasmania – and the chance discovery of a memorial to a forgotten hero – had us turning back history’s pages. What we found was a horse whose deeds are never likely to be emulated, a two generation hop from convict to aristocracy, a fair mix of religion and politics and, just for good measure, an old fashioned sex scandal.

ITH ALL DUE respect to the good folk of Deloraine, there’s not a lot of viable reasons to hop out of your warm car as you wend your way through town in the middle of winter. Still, the horse statue on your right as you reach the outer environs gives you pause: even if your immediate thoughts are that this must surely be the coldest commemoration to Equus ferus caballus in Australia. (And before you start with any of the brass monkey jokes, we’re pretty sure this is a bronze and, yes, they haven’t frozen off yet).
The statue in question is that of Malua and while his name might not ring the same bell as that of Phar Lap, Tulloch or Kingston Town, his track prowess was indeed considerable.
Malua was foaled some six or seven kilometres from where his statue now stands: in the paddocks of the vast ‘Calstock’ property purchased by John Field in 1853.
Certainly considerable enough for a number of devoted locals – blokes like Geoff Woods, author of Mighty Malua – to agitate for a monument in the horse’s honour.
(Shades of Widden, ‘Calstock’ was family run for over a hundred years and has the distinction of breeding successive Melbourne Cup winners – Malua [1884] and Sheet Anchor [1885], both of whom were by St Albans).
And why not? Inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2003, Malua is deemed in some quarters as the “most versatile Australian Thoroughbred racehorse in history”, winning races from 1100 metres to 5200 metres, including the Newmarket (carrying 60kgs) and Melbourne Cup (61kgs) in the same year.
Malua was sold as a yearling by Field, bringing the right honourable, Thomas Reibey into the picture. Now here was an interesting fella. Although far too uppercrust to >>

After all, Thomas’ grandmother, Mary Reibey, had been transported to Sydney in 1792 – at the age of 15 – for horse stealing. Two years after arriving in the colony, Mary married Thomas Reibey Senior who would go on to become a major importer. Left with seven kids and numerous business ventures when Thomas departed this mortal coil in 1811, Mary proved a dab hand at property investment and appears to have once owned a good portion of what is now Sydney’s CBD.

Becoming interested in politics, Thomas then ran for the seat of Westbury and was elected with an overwhelming majority (owning most of the land in the district undoubtedly helped).
(Although Mary Reibey might not sound all that familiar, chances are you look at her photo every day … she’s on the ‘obverse’ of every $20 note produced since 1994!) Meanwhile, her grandson Thomas – after originally schooling in Tasmania – was sent to Oxford University, but was best remembered for leisure activities rather than academic achievements. Nevertheless, cash buys a lot of friends and upon his return to Tassie, Thomas was admitted to the holy orders, eventually becoming archdeacon of Launceston.
THOMAS REIBEY: MALUA'S FIRST OWNER AND PREMIER OF TASMANIA
Eventually, the man dubbed by Mercury newspaper as ‘the ecclesiastical debauchee’ became Tasmania’s 11th Premier, holding the position for just over a year.
By any standards, Malua was a truly remarkable racehorse and there is also a street named after him in the Melbourne suburb of Ormond which, coincidentally, was the same road on which famous opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba lived for some time.
She was some gal: while most of her contemporaries sought litigious means to settle business disputes, Mary was found guilty of 34

In 1886, as a 6YO, Malua captured the Australian Cup – then over two and a quarter miles (3600m) – but pickings were lean as a 7YO and there was talk of retiring the champ. However, his owner – J.O. Inglis – who, by this time was also the trainer, decided to race Malua in the Grand National Hurdle … and ride him as well!
Personally, while Dame Nellie could definitely hold a tune, it’s doubtful she could run two miles on a Tuesday and belt out another top performance on the Thursday.
– was called Bagot, after the first secretary of the Victoria Racing Club, but J.O. Inglis changed the moniker, as a sign of respect.

Capturing the Melbourne Cup over two miles (3200m), Malua then ran a close second – two days later – in the six furlong (1200m) Flying Stakes,
Malua emerged a clear winner which, by today’s standards, would elevate he and his o w n e r- t r a i n e rjockey to near mythical status.
Malua bid racing a fond farewell in February 1889, taking out the Geelong Cup in a somewhat >> fitting finale.
INDUSTRY PROFILE
However, he was far from done and his career at stud yielded nine stakes winners including 1891 Melbourne Cup winner Malvolio and Newmarket Handicap victor Maluma. And if trying to do the sums on Malvolio – yes, he was a yearling when Malua won the Geelong Cup!
• A range of models
Obviously it wasn’t just his first owner who mixed business with pleasure …
• Smooth acceleration up to 60km/h
By any standards, Malua was a truly remarkable racehorse and there is also a street named after him in the Melbourne suburb of Ormond which, coincidentally, was the same road on which famous opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba lived for some time. Personally, while Dame Nellie could definitely hold a tune, it’s doubtful she could run two miles on a Tuesday and belt out another top performance on the Thursday. Malua was clearly one of a kind … a notion that won’t get you into an argument in Deloraine. And he’s certainly worth leaving a warm car for.

NATIONAL Sales REVIEW With Magic Millions making a concerted effort to increase not only the quality of the draft offered at its annual National Sale in late May/early June, but also the number of buyers, the sale company is very happy with its achievements at this year’s auction.
"
THE SALE EXCEED THE expectations of many,” said Managing Director David Chester. “It came at a time when the stock market had taken a hit and similar lead ups to sales around Australasia had been very tough – we were expecting tough times.” “But we had great support from vendors around the country and overseas who entered some great prospects. And we were thrilled to host so many buyers from around Australia and particularly overseas who competed for their desired lots.” A total gross of over $48.7 million thrilled Chester, a rise of over 41% on the same sale last year – just over $34.5 million. “Our team spent so a lot of time trying to ensure we had a large number of clients across all levels of the market,” he continued, “and when you cast your eyes over the results you’ll see what a broad cross section of buyers we had from right around the world.”

He is a great mover and we are delighted to be able to have bought him.” ch.f Encosta de Lago – Calaway Gal (By Clang): caught the eye of NZ’s David Ellis whose bid of $280,000 was the winning one. “If you want to make a business of buying horses the real goal is to buy a colt or a filly by a champion sire or out of a champion mare who looks a real athlete,” Ellis commented. “With this horse you get all three!.” Ellis is hoping that his success with the National Sales continues, having purchased two Gr.1 winners there in recent years – Princess Coup and Tell A Tale. “It’s bee a great sale for us and we enjoy coming over each year.”

A
They’ll save you!
FEW YEARS BACK you couldn’t switch on the telly without listening to that bloke from Aussie Home Loans – John Symond – tell you how “we’ll save you”. Thing is, a lot of people took note and the roly-poly Symond did indeed save a lot of folk with his innovative ‘broking’ concept. Basically, ‘Aussie’ hunts around to secure the best loans for home seekers, cutting down on not only a lot of leg work, but also a myriad of pitfalls for the uninitiated. Well, it turns out bloodstock insurance guru Wayne Aldridge is attempting to walk a similar path in our particular neck of the woods and, while he could hardly be mistaken for Symond (Wayne looks as if he could still break evens for the furlong), their vision is shared.
40
www.tracktotrack.com
Wayne would be the first to admit that insurance is a ‘dry’ subject – a “necessary evil” many would say – but let’s face it, insurance is whole lot less evil if there are ways and means of minimising the costs relating to coverage AND the risks. Traditionally typically bloodstock insurers brokers are not true brokers according to Wayne, ""they act as underwriting agents for insurers … tied to an insurer … and contractually obligated to offer the supporting insurer’s product. That’s where Wayne attacks it from a different angle: with no binding allegiance to a given underwriter or insurer, or compulsion to offer a specific product, he is free to seek out – on behalf of the client – the best possible premiums and terms. As for experience, Wayne has
worked both sides of the fence … over 20 years of establishing his bona fides in the field of bloodstock and livestock insurance, many years as manager of Inglis’ insurance sector. A passionate owner and breeder, Wayne is also a qualified Chartered Accountant which, he reckons, gives him “the best of all worlds”, allowing him to espouse not only his insurance specialty, but also provide clients advice on financial matters, formulate business plans, accounting, tax and maintenance of financial and bloodstock records. “Additionally, I keep my hand in bloodstock selection by attending all the major bloodstock sales and advise clients on stallion matings.” Around three years ago, Wayne determined to kick off his own insurance broker company and,

thus, E-Quine Insurance Services Pty Ltd was launched with Wayne at the helm. And while Wayne’s initiative may largely have been symptomatic from reading John Symond’s biography ‘Aussie John’, the dream of his own company – one that was not tied down to a sole underwriter – proved to be far too alluring.
“E-Quine prides itself on offering clients products that are
economic climates. Any decision to curtail insurance during tough times leaves valuable bloodstock assets unprotected and owners are exposed to the risk of losing their investment altogether,” Wayne points out. “I always suggest to clients not to cut their insurance premiums … rather cut yourself a WAYNE ALDRIDGE WITH WIFE SUE & DAUGHTER better insurance deal.” CHEVAUNE

E-Quines' model is remarkably simple: “An insurance policy is, in effect, an invitation to renew annually and the consumer has the right to shop around if the product or price does not suit their needs,” Wayne adds.
“E-Quine Insurance Services' unique business model of being the only conventional, specialist bloodstock insurance broker is E-Quine personnel are on call proving a hit with owners looking seven days a week, ensuring to insure their horses,” Wayne prompt service and the speed points out. “Not only does in which claims are paid is a “Basically, our clients – existing E-Quine act for clients, in their major factor: “We recently had and potential – disclose details best interests, but it is able to a million dollars plus insurance of the bloodstock or livestock offer clients insurance products claim paid to the client in less that they are looking to insure from more than one insurer by than five working days. or renew. sourcing these products from “E-Quine does the a wide selection running around of reputable and “E-QUINE DOES THE RUNNING AROUND for the consumer s p e c i a l i s t FOR THE CONSUMER BY IDENTIFYING, by identifying, underwriters. collating and COLLATING AND PRESENTING “E-Quines' p re s e n t i n g INSURANCE TERMS AND CONDITIONS broker service insurance terms AND THE COST OF THE INSURANCE is not confined and conditions PRODUCTS THAT MEETS THEIR NEEDS.” to thoroughbred and the cost of the racing and insurance products breeding, but embraces insurance “It’s hassle free and quick – that meets their needs. AN SIRO IS A MAGNIFICENT race course located about 15 minutes from the centre of Milan and adjacent to the Stadio San Siro which is home to two of the world's great football clubs - AC Milan and this year's European champions Inter Milan. It has a superb turf surface with the course proper in an elliptical shape which provides great viewing and it also boasts a seven furlongs (1400 metres) straight track with an alternative winning post.

reminder that racing in Italy is struggling financially. However there was no disappointment for the Australians involved with the Italian Oaks winner - Contradense, a filly by Danehill Dancer from the Rahy mare Ahdab, who is owned by London based Aussie Stuart Stuckey whose initial investments in racing were guided by our well known bloodstock agent Jenny McAlpine. McAlpine was on course at San Siro and even though I was chiefly there for a day out, the journalist instincts kicked in and I had to find out the background to this Luca Cumani trained filly who has now won three of her six starts. "Stuart is my client from Sydney who moved to London five years ago. He has his own investment company." McAlpine explained. "I met him in Australia when he wanted to come with me to the Tattersalls mare sale. I took him to the December sales about six years ago and he bought a mare

so he first became my Tattersalls client. He then became my David Hayes client. "After moving to London, I put him on to my friend Rachel Boffey who could assist in looking after his horse interests. He purchased more horses at Tatts including yearlings and I then put them all with Luca Cummani,' she said. That is certainly enhancing an Aussie connection with Cumani's Newmarket stables now also the home to horses owned by Paul Makin, Nathan Tinkler and Terry Henderson and Simon O'Donnell's OTI syndicates. >>

FIRST SEASON SIRES 2010
First Season Sires 2010
Part 4
Kristen Manning looks at the new boys in town. MASTERCRAFTSMAN
Bay, 2006 Danehill Dancer (IRE) – Starlight Dreams (USA) (Black Tie Affair IRE) Standing: Windsor Park Stud, NZ Ph: 64 7 827 6656 2010 fee: Book Full www.windsorparkstud.co.nz
A high class juvenile crowned European Champion 2Y0, Mastercraftsman won his first four starts including the Irish Gr.1 pair, the Phoenix Stakes and the National Stakes at The Curragh. And he went right on with the job at three – winning another two Gr.1 races, the Irish 2000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
One of his sire Danehill Dancer’s 109 stakes winners and 12 Gr.1 winners – noting that Australian success story Choisir (25 stakes winners) is another – Mastercraftsman is a full brother to the Gr.1 runner up Famous and a ¾ brother to the Gr.3 winner Genuine Devotion.
Hailing from an excellent family, he can count amongst his close relations the Gr.1 winners Sakhee (sire of international star Presvis), Pressing and River Memories.
NICCONI
Bay, 2005 Bianconi (USA) – Nicola Lass (Scenic IRE) Standing: Widden Stud, NSW Ph: (02) 6549 9999 2010 fee: $22,000 (incl gst) www.widden.com.au
Back in Australia after a close up fourth at Royal Ascot –David Hayes’ first runner at that famous meeting – Nicconi has always been highly regarded by his trainer. “He’s the best sprinter I have ever trained and one of the best looking stallions to come out of Lindsay Park,” he said. By the regally bred Danzig stallion Bianconi, a reliable Gr.2 winning son of the famed matriarch Fall Aspen, Nicconi is out of the terrific Scenic mare Nicola Lass.
A stakes placed dam of three winners, she has also produced the five times Gr.1 winner Niconero and the stakes placed Recooperate and Holly Go Lightly. Hailing from a prolific family with whichWidden Stud has already enjoyed success via General Nediym, Nicconi can also count amongst his relations the big race winners Horlicks, Brew, Monaco Consul, Military Plume, Laelia, Zip Zip Aray, Sealegs and Interstellar.
A horse with a terrific turn of foot, Nicconi won six of his 16 starts including the Gr.1 Lightning Stakes and the Gr.1 Galaxy. After the King's Stand Stakes his record stood at just short of a million dollars in earnings.

FIRST SEASON SIRES 2010
First Season Sires 2010 Part 4 cont. RED ARROW
Bay, 2003 Red Ransom (USA) – Lady Jakeo (Last Tycoon IRE) Standing: Lincoln Farm, NSW Ph: 0417903578 2010 fee: $6,600 (incl gst) www.lincolnfarm.com.au
Like most sons of Red Ransom – a stallion whose sons are proving extremely popular at stud with the likes of Domesday and Charge Forward faring so well – Red Arrow catches the eye. A $225,00 Easter yearling, he raced ten times in Australia – at debut leading throughout in a Wyong maiden. Close up at subsequent metropolitan runs, he improved with racing and as a late three-year-old/early four-year-old was twice stakes placed before heading to the United States. A fast finishing second to Tesbury
Jack in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes and third to Commanding Hope in the Gr.3 Bletchingly Stakes, Red Arrow enhanced his form in America – winning the Gr.3 Los Angeles Handicap at Hollywood Park. Bred on the same Red Ransom/ Last Tycoon cross as the Gr.1 juvenile Onemorenomore, Red Arrow is a son of the wonderful race mare Lady Jakeo. Twice a Gr.1 winner of the Blue Diamond Stakes and the Australia Stakes, she had done a great job
at stud – represented by eight winners including the Hong Kong Gr.3 winner Able Choice and the Hong Kong Derby runner up Momentum. She is also grandam of the Gr.3 winners Miss Judgement and Fifth Avenue Lady and this is the family of the Gr.1 winners Regal Rhythm, Merlene and Miss Pennymoney.
REDOUBTABLEMPEROR
Grey, 2002 Redoute’s Choice – Split River (USA) (Riverman USA) Standing: Porter’s Thoroughbreds, NSW Ph: 0404565246 2010 fee: $2,200 (incl gst, discount for proven mares) www.porters-spelling.com.au
A $120,000 Magic Millions yearling who caught the eye of Graeme Rogerson, Redoubtablemperor was an early Randwick trial winner but he did take a little while to break his maiden. Consistent on his way to that first win, a 1000m maiden, Redoubtablemperor won another two races over sprinting trips. A dashing grey son of the champion stallion Redoute’s Choice whose 61 stakes winners including recent runaway Queensland

Derby winner Dariana, Redoubtablemperor is a half brother to the French dual stakes winner River Ball. His dam Split River, by the great influence Riverman, is a half sister to the US Gr.3 winner Natalie Too and her dam Likely Split is a half sister to the Gr.1 Prix Morny winner Ancient Regime – dam of the Group winners Rami and Crack Regiment.
This is a strong northern hemisphere family which has also produced the stakes winners Foreign Affairs, La Grande Epoque, Matelot, Prince Tum Tum, Abbeyside, Flat Spin, Castor Troy, Cricket Ball, Mug Punter and Mubtaker.
FIRST SEASON SIRES 2010
SHIMONHRO
Bay/brown, 2005 Lonhro – Shingle Moss (Twig Moss FR) Standing: Bombora Downs,VIC Ph: (03) 5983 6802 2010 fee: $3,850 (incl gst) www.bomboradowns.com
A particularly good looking dark brown, near black stallion built very much in the mould of his popular sire, the 16.2hh Shimonhro is described by Bombora Downs’ Christoph Bruechert as “a stallion of excellent conformation and a fantastic temperament.” A $400,000 Easter yearling sent to respected Wyong trainer Kim Waugh, Shimonhro sadly did not make it to the track but he certainly showed plenty of talent. “Shimonhro has an outstanding temperament and a fantastic
galloping action,” Waugh said – “he ran times that only horses of the highest class can run and I was confident that he was of Group One standard.” One of the first sons of Lonhro retired to stud, Shimonhro is bound to prove popular with the many fans of that stallion who has already sired 14 stakes winners. Shimonhro is a son of the excellent broodmare Shingle Moss whose sire Twig Moss is a great influence in pedigrees. All
seven of her foals to race have been winners including Super Molly (twice successful at Gr.3 level in Hong Kong), Zedamoss (Gr.3 Lee-Steere Classic) and Andra (Listed Queen Adelaide Stakes). Further back this is the family of the legendary brothers Todman and Noholme II.
THEWAYYOUARE
Bay, 2005 Kingmambo (USA) – Maryinsky (IRE) (Sadler’s Wells USA) Standing: Windsor Park Stud, NZ Ph: 64 7 827 665 2010 fee: $10,000 + gst www.windsorparkstud.co.nz
One of his sire Kingmambo’s 22 Gr.1 winners and 75 stakes winners, Thewayyouare was a brilliant winner of four in a row at two. Rapidly rising through the grades, he won at Deauville – then stepping up to Listed company then Gr.3 and then proving too strong for his rivals in the Gr.1 Criterium International at SaintCloud. A half brother to the four times Gr.1 winner Peeping Fawn, Thewayyouare hails from a truly
great international family – one that has enjoyed prolific success in the southern hemisphere via the deeds of its outstanding member Redoute’s Choice. A grandson of the Kentucky Oaks heroine Blush With Pride and a great grandson of the famed matriarch Best In Show, Thewayyouare can also boast amongst his relations the big race winners Rags To Richs, Jazil, Xaar, Senure, Chief Contender, Aviance,
Denon, Chimes Of Freedom, Aldeberan, Good Journey, Spinning World, Saddex, El Gran Senor, Try My Best, Bahamian Pirate, Domedriver, Yagli, He’s No Pie Eater, Platinum Scissors, Hurricane Sky, Umatilla, Al Maher and Manhattan Rain.
