He holds the state record over 1500m in winning the RJ Peters Stakes-G3 (defeating subsequent Group One winner, Gilded Venom) and, as a 3YO, won the Listed Aquanita Stakes over 1800m, defeating Grey Monarch in very taking fashion.

You gotta like Mark Kavanagh … well, you don’t gotta, but you certainly have to admire him. And who can help but smile or sympathise when he pulls those faces of sheer delight or gut wrenching anguish. Who could forget that look of despair when Maldivian, the prohibitive favourite, was scratched in sensational circumstances following a barrier accident in the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup? Was that really four years ago? Nor can we forget the gob smacked expression – for an audience of many, many millions – when Shocking won the 2009 Melbourne Cup. A new biography by author JESSICA OWERS brings to life the story of a (long) overlooked champion of the Australian turf.

OR THE MOST part, we’ve read every conceivable racing tale. We’ve read the underdog story, and the cheap-champion story. We’ve read the one where the bad horse comes good. But what about the one where two champions appear in the same era, right after each other, and legend has space only for one of them? Step forward Peter Pan: The Forgotten Story of Phar Lap’s Successor. Debut author Jessica Owers has emerged with a richly detailed and engaging new biography on Peter Pan, the dazzling blond chestnut of the 1930s who stepped onto Australian racetracks in May 1932, just six weeks after the death of Phar Lap. Before his retirement in 1936, Peter Pan won two Melbourne Cups, broke the Australasian mile

record, and became a racing idol in the post-Phar Lap days. At just under 500 closely packed pages, this book is a serious anthology on the life of a truly amazing horse. The story follows Peter Pan’s racing career chronologically, from his barnstorming three-year-old season to his unheralded second Cup win and scintillating 1935 run when, as Owers tells us, Peter Pan became “something of a miracle in the history of horse racing”. The book features the wealthy owner Rodney Dangar, the Doncaster Avenue trainer Frank McGrath, and a procession of Hall of Fame jockeys, from Jim Pike to the ‘Demon Darb’ Munro. Sprinkled throughout, in fascinating, scene-setting appearances, are the other characters that touched Peter Pan’s life – Lanny Leighninger from the Agua Caliente Jockey Club, for example, who tried to lure Peter Pan to Mexico, and the fast-talking American boxing manager Al Lippe who wanted to buy him. R O U N D Melbourne Cup time there is something about an international suffix that garners attention from the rank and file. Whack on a (IRE) or (GB) or (USA) or for that matter (JPN), at the end of a Cup hopeful’s name, as opposed to your common shop (AUS), and it can be akin to having Melbourne Grammar or Mumbai Public on your resume … one is going to gain you, regardless of actual ability, a measure of respect.

And punters are right to flock to the internationals even if they’ve never seen them race: indeed, the overseas breds have won Australia’s greatest race six times in the last nine years. Consider this too if you fancy a bit of each way – 2010 (Americain [$14.00] won), 2009 (Crime Scene [$41.00] 2nd and Mourilyan [$21.00] 3rd), 2008 (Bauer [$21.00] 2nd), 2007 (Purple Moon [$5.50] 2nd and Maher [$10.00] 3rd) and 2006 (Delta Blues [16/1] won, Pop Rock [5/1] 2nd). In two of the three years prior to ’06, all won by that mercurial mare – the British born Makybe Diva – Vinnie Roe (IRE) ran her to a length and a quarter in 2004 and Jardine’s Lookout (IRE) grabbed third in 2003. You could be forgiven for thinking that the bases are loaded in their favour with nine of the 23 runners last year hailing from overseas, but there only five in 2009 (for two placings), seven in 2008 (a lip second), five in 2007 (for two placings) and eight in 2006 (for first and second). Yet, even despite that kind of disclosed ‘form’, December Draw (IRE) flew in under the radar when he stepped out for the first time in Australia.

Why, it’s a fact of life – Australia breeds the best sprinters, not the best stayers. Time we got over it (after all, there is only one Melbourne Cup a year, but over 80% of Australian races are over short courses). We breed what we need. 18

Not surprising really. A 25,000 guineas purchase at the 2007 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in England, December Draw stepped out for the first time at Great Leighs (where?) finishing third of 15. He won his Maiden on 8 December 2008, but despite some

promising performances, it was seven runs and 15 months before he could repeat the dose. He won at Wolverhampton again a month later and then ran third in a Listed event at Kempton, but his last four runs in Britain failed to produce a placing. Brought to Australia by prominent Sydney owner and hedge fund manager, Richard Pegum, December Draw landed on these shores and in Kavanagh’s stables around the same time as another Pegum owned international in My Kingdom of Fife, was placed with Chris Waller. To be fair, My Kingdom of Fife did not have THAT much better a British CV than December Draw, but when the Waller horse peeled off successive victories in the Royal Parma-G3, Queen Elizabeth-G1 and AD Hollindale-G2, you can understand that Kavanagh was slightly dubious when Pegum told him HE had the better neddy of the two. Still, it was the first horse Pegum had placed with Kavanagh and the trainer had considerable respect for the owner’s acumen … furthermore, a long-time Kavanagh supporter in Gary Towzell is a co-owner. However, when Kavanagh saddled up December Draw for his first Aussie outing – in the AGL Renewable Energy Trophy (1600m) at Flemington on 7 May – expectations were not high. The betting offices of Fontstown’s nearest town of Athy (Fontstown has no pubs or shops), prove to be the only way of measuring general interest, but sadly it is fairly lacking. While all the punters frequenting the many offices are aware of the race and the European raiders, their interest in Aussie horses is nonexistent. The only Australian horses they know are those who have made the journey to England and Ireland. Few recognised the name of

But what of racecourse professionals? The annual visit of the VRC to the Curragh racecourse, complete with the Melbourne Cup, has done a great deal to spark interest among racing’s ‘professionals’: many of them able to discuss the merits of all the runners, irrespective of nationality. The fact that Australian racing is broadcast on the satellite channels, has certainly done its bit to increase awareness. LUCA CUMANI And, it seems that no one I spoke to at the Curragh races will be in bed at 5am on Tuesday 1 November! One well-known Irish personality, Nick O’Toole, even told me of his ownership of all the race programs from Phar Lap’s career. Such dedicated collecting could hardly be matched back in ‘Bobby’s’ native New Zealand!

THE MELBOURNE CUP REMAINS AS IMPORTANT A FEATURE IN THE INTERNATIONAL RACING CALENDAR HERE IN BRITAIN AND IRELAND AS IT IS AT HOME IN AUSTRALIA. But if interest among diehard race fans is high, then it borders on obsession among professionals. Trainer Saeed Bin Suroor is in no doubt of how important the Melbourne Cup is. In his first season as a trainer in England, 17 years ago, he 29

Guineas, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, York International, Eclipse Stakes, Yorkshire Oaks, Golden Jubilee Stakes and Nunthorpe Stakes, as well as the San Juan Capistrano Invitational in the USA and the Yasuda Kinen in Japan. The following year he won the first of his four British Champion Trainer titles. Could he have any ambitions left? “Some races are definitely on our agenda,” Saeed Bin Suroor points out. “The Melbourne Cup, definitely, but it is never going to be easy. You need the class horse. He must have stamina, speed, quality … he must be able to handle the ground. While Luca Cumani (whose horse Bauer finished a lip second to Viewed in 2009) recently informed me of the difficulties caused by quarantine regulations, Saeed seems as unfazed as his horses when it comes to making the long trip south: “Our horses travel all the time … they are used to it, it’s not a problem. “We have a very good routine, so it’s never any different for them. They have the same groom, we send the same work rider with them. It’s not that difficult, it’s just routine, well organised. We are looking at the best owner in the world. We compete all over the world and Sheikh Mohammed is a major help internationally.”

DERMOT WELD

For Dermot Weld, winning a third Melbourne Cup (Vintage Crop 1993 & Media Puzzle 2002) remains a top priority, while Luca Cumani said: “It’s a huge race and I love the whole atmosphere.” Even though Weld and Cumani are both veterans of the race, like Saeed, they find it gets harder to compete each year: rather than easier. Travelling poses problems and quarantine restricts the usual training routines. Dermot Weld has also fallen foul of the race restrictions themselves, but neither has been deterred from their quest.

“The Melbourne Cup is very important to us. Very important to Godolphin and very important to the United Arab Emirates. It’s the best race in the world,” he stresses. “For the Melbourne Cup it is important that the horse can stay. They need to be able to get home over two miles. But still they need to have speed and class. We didn’t have luck in the past. The horses we sent got injured before they ran, which made it very difficult, or they didn’t even run because of problems before the race. It’s a tough game, it’s always hard, but you always have to be looking forward.”

Indeed, the Melbourne Cup remains as important a feature in the international racing calendar here in Britain and Ireland as it is at home in Australia.

THE BARB Bushranger ‘reject’ was “Shakespeare among horses” KEVIN GATES is one of our foremost authorities on the history of Australian racing. We’re fairly certain he never saw The Bard ‘live’, but his tale of the horse they called the Black Demon will make you think you were there.

HE RECENT A u s t r a l i a n C h a m p i o n Racehorse of the Year Award brings to mind horses who have dominated the turf in previous eras. None was more honoured in his time than our very first champion, The Barb. The undisputed champion of the Australian turf before Carbine came on the scene late in the 19th century, The Barb was a superbly proportioned, jet-black stallion. To the racing public he was known as “The Black Demon”, while the founder of the famous St. Albans Stud, James Wilson, called him “the Shakespeare among racehorses” (ed. clearly stud marketing is an art form which predates the 20th century!). Foaled in 1863, The Barb was bred by George Lee of Bathurst, and was by the great colonial sire of the period, Sir Hercules. His

career almost came to an end before it had started, as when still a foal at foot, he was stolen with some other horses by bushrangers. George Lee and friends followed the trail of the bushrangers, and finally caught up with them in the Monaro region of southern New South Wales. There they apprehended the culprits and recovered their horses, with the exception of one black colt which they gave up for lost. Some days

later when reports of the incident appeared in the press, a farmer wrote to Lee informing him that he had seen the horses go past his place, and that a black foal which was lame had been left on his property. The foal was then returned to Bathurst, apparently none the worse for wear, although some observers believed that the ill-tempered behaviour that The Barb exhibited from an early age was due to mistreatment suffered at the hands of the

bushrangers. Whatever the reason, The Barb soon came to be known as “The Black Demon” because of his fiery, volatile temperament. The Barb came to the notice of John Tait, hotel keeper and prominent racehorse owner who was born in Edinburgh in 1813. He emigrated to Tasmania with his young family in 1837 and set up in business as a jeweller, but the outdoor life was more to his liking and he moved to the mainland where he took up the licence of the Albion Inn at Hartley, near Bathurst, in 1843. His considerable prowess as a boxer helped him to keep good order on his premises – the Melbourne Herald once commented that he served excellent rum with beer chasers … and even better left hooks. Tait had a great enthusiasm for racing and an uncanny eye for spotting a promising horse. His horses frequently won match races, often for large purses, and by 1846 Tait’s winnings enabled him to invest in a larger hotel in Bathurst and to expand his racing interests to Sydney. There he won the 1850 and 1851 AJC St Leger, the 1851 Australian Plate, Queen’s Plate and other major races with his champion horses Surplus, Cossack and Sportsman. These wins made Tait a wealthy man. He sold up in Bathurst, purchased imposing licenced premises in Sydney’s Castlereagh >>

Street, went to England to buy breeding stock for his stud farm at Mt Druitt, and established training stables at Byron Lodge, Randwick.

By the end of the 1850s John Tait was the leading owner in New South Wales, and laid claim to be the first owner in Australia to make horseracing a commercial business. Not only was he a shrewd and successful owner, but he was regarded by all who knew him as a man of absolute integrity – hence the familiar name by which he became known: “Honest John”. When Tait saw The Barb at Bathurst he was impressed by his powerful proportions and fluent galloping action. He offered Lee 200 guineas for the colt, which was gratefully accepted. Tait assigned James Ingersole, a local horseman, to take The Barb to Sydney. Ingersole later swore that “The

Black Demon” kicked and squealed every yard of the long journey down the Blue Mountains to Sydney. Training the temperamental colt proved a nightmare, and when he fronted up for his first race he unseated his jockey and refused to start. At his next attempt in the Two-Year-Old Stakes at Randwick on 28 April 1866, he missed the jump badly but flashed home for third behind the champion Victorian colt Fishhook. On 7 May the two colts met again in the Nursery Handicap at Randwick. Fishhook was expected to win and started as even money favourite, but The Barb ran out a convincing winner by two lengths. Tait then chose the AJC Derby in September as the next challenge for The Barb, his principal opponent again being the Victorian Fishhook. Interstate rivalry was intense. As reported in a Sydney newspaper: “Every Sydneysider who can walk, drive, ride, or be carried to Randwick will attend the races to support The Barb”. He did not disappoint his supporters, winning by two lengths in record time. After several more runs in Sydney, Tait shipped The Barb south for the 1866 Melbourne Cup. The field was a particularly strong one that year, including two previous winners of the Australian Cup, an Adelaide Cup winner and the winner of the 1865 Melbourne Cup,

Toryboy. In a field of 29 The Barb led the field out of the straight and maintained his position until the half way mark when challenged by Exile. Heading for home The Barb and Exile engaged in a desperate struggle, with The Barb prevailing on the line by a head. At only his sixth start The Barb had won the Melbourne Cup in the record time of 3 minutes 45 seconds. The racing journalist Augur was moved to write: “… we were introduced to the most powerful and muscular thoroughbred I ever saw. That was The Barb. He stood very little over 15 hands, but I have never clapped eyes on such a barrel, such a muscular back, or such wonderfully developed quarters”.

As a 4YO The Barb confirmed his champion status by winning the Port Phillip Stakes, the Launceston Town Plate, and the 1868 Sydney Cup in record time. As a 5YO he won all seven of his starts, including a second Sydney Cup, in which he carried a huge 10 st 8 lb (67kgs), a weight record which no other horse has ever approached in winning the race. A Bell’s Life reporter wrote: “as The Barb came up the straight the cheering from the stand was such as Randwick never heard before”.

The Barb rounded off his triumphant 3YO season by taking out the Australasian Champion Stakes, then the premier weight-for-age race in the colonies. There was no official margin – the record book simply stated that The Barb ‘won easily’.

Any thought of running The Barb in the 1869 Melbourne Cup was quickly abandoned when the handicappers allocated him 11st 7lb (73kg), the highest weight given to any horse in the history of the Cup. John Tait thereupon announced >>

Two days later The Barb lined up for his last race, the three mile (4800m) Queen’s Plate, which he duly won, beating his stablemate, Glencoe, by a length.

his retirement and sold him to Charles Reynolds of Maitland for stud duties. Despite the retirement of The Barb, John Tait’s career as an owner went from strength to strength. His victories included four Melbourne Cups, two Sydney Cups, five AJC St Legers, three AJC Derbies, four Victoria Derbies, Epsoms, Metropolitans, Champion races, and numerous match races. By the early 1880s his accumulated winnings were calculated at more than £30,000 - in excess of $3 million in today’s currency. The Barb’s career at stud did not live up to expectations, and he sired only three notable winners. However, he did leave one indelible mark on thoroughbred

breeding in that it was The Barb’s daughter, Melody, who foaled Melodious, who in turn produced Wallace, the best racehorse son of Carbine and one of the greatest sires Australia has known. The last word on The Barb must go with Adam Lindsay Gordon who penned: There’s The Barb – you may talk of your flyers and stayers. He stands at the post. Now they’re off…. He skims o’er the smooth turf, he scuds through the mire, He waits with them, passes them, bids them good-bye.

The Barb was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2004.

A new biography by author JESSICA OWERS brings to life the story of a (long) overlooked champion of the Australian turf.

OR THE MOST part, we’ve read every conceivable racing tale. We’ve read the underdog story, and the cheap-champion story. We’ve read the one where the bad horse comes good. But what about the one where two champions appear in the same era, right after each other, and legend has space only for one of them? Step forward Peter Pan: The Forgotten Story of Phar Lap’s Successor. Debut author Jessica Owers, has emerged with a richly detailed and engaging new biography on Peter Pan, the dazzling blond chestnut of the 1930s who stepped onto Australian racetracks in May 1932, just six weeks after the death of Phar Lap. Before his retirement in 1936, Peter Pan won two Melbourne Cups, broke the Australasian mile

weaving them together to recreate an extraordinary thoroughbred life during the Great Depression. Via careful reconstruction of the times, we are reminded throughout of the relentless legend of Phar Lap. Time and again, Peter Pan was compared and deposed in favour of the Red Terror, even in the wake of extraordinary track deeds. We learn of his owner’s frustration at this, and newspaper snippets reveal interesting public sentiments. At the end of the book, the author takes the legend of Phar Lap to account in an engaging comparison of the two horses’ records: that alone is worth the price of admission! If Peter Pan reads like a

good novel, it is because it was written like one. Jessica Owers has employed narrative non-fiction to knit this story together, so we are brought back to moments in Peter Pan’s life, not merely educated about them: There was the smell of cut grass from the straight six, and the odour of paddock roses that traveled on the breeze. We also learn a great deal about Peter Pan himself, from his irascible nature to his colossal dimensions (over 17.1hh) and his striking beauty (“clapping eyes on him was like suddenly spotting a magnificent woman”). I’m tipping anyone who reads this cover to cover will end

ESSICA OWERS WRITES like she’s been around for a lot longer than her publicity blurb – and certainly her photo – would suggest.

According to the spiel, Jessica was born in the year Kingston Town won his first Cox Plate (1980 to save you looking it up) but this is a VERY good effort for a debutante. She’s really nailed the essence of what is a great Aussie story: a tale about a time that our grandfathers and great grandfathers often reminisced (or in the case of crusty old journos, our fathers!). Bitten by the racing bug since she read about Phar Lap as

a nipper, Jessica completed a degree in environmental science and journalism at Stirling University in Scotland and has since penned a number of features for leading trade publications. And she doesn’t mind making a ‘call’ either: “That Phar Lap was a great horse there is no denying … but his greatness was emphasised by the poor class of opposition he encountered” is likely to put some knots into knickers at the Phar Lap Society. A top read – five years in the making – Peter Pan is out on the 31st of October and definitely one of those Christmas presents you can get out of the way early.

Ready to Run sales gaining ground Horses in Training sales – Breeze Ups, Ready to Runs … call them what you will – have been regarded with an air of cynicism in this country. They still are to a point. Why? A myriad of reasons but primary among them is the perception as to how could someone sell a horse if they know it can run?

N THE OTHER hand, and pardon the lapse into Jack Styringspeak, but the fact of the matter is, these sales are starting to build up far too strong a resume to be taken lightly. The Gold Coast National Horses in Training Sale is a case in point. Too many good graduates now to start getting sniffy about the bona fides of a concept. For starters, Shocking was offered there in 2007. A great example actually … from memory he didn’t run a time in his breeze up but there was obviously something about him. Washpool Lodge purchased the Street Cry colt as a yearling for pin hooking purposes and while the folk there wouldn’t be able to retire on the ‘profit’ $45,000 as a yearling, $64,000 as a ready to run 10 months later – it clearly shows that they could identify promise and nuture it.

Indeed, when you have reputable mobs like

Washpool and, say, BC3 dedicating their operation to the turnover of weanling/ yearling purchases at ready to run sales, some of the doubters may have to question their own ability to sort the wheat from the chaff. Magic Millions has dedicated a good deal of its promotion for the two day 2011 Horses in Training Sale – which kicks off at the Gold Coast on 19 October – to graduates that we know little about on these shores. Horses like Kaiser, El Milagro, Gingerbread Man. But there is a method to the marketing. Each of the trio was sold into South East Asia – Singapore to be more specific – and are the best form of promotion an auction company can buy. Credit where it’s due … Magic Millions has spent a CONSIDERABLE amount of time and money over the years nurturing its Asian network, but platitudes and freebies are no match for performance. Asian investors now know there is quality to be had on the Gold Coast, attested by the deeds of Kaiser (4 wins and 3 seconds from 9 outings and over S$230k), El Milagro (2 from 3) and Champion Singapore 2YO Gingerbread
