Building Bridges
FEATURE ARTICLE 16-21 There’s A Pattern
To say that the last 12 months has been busy at Three Bridges is something of an understatement. The Liston family-owned operation in the North East of Victoria has quickly made a name for itself as a player in the industry, particularly at the yearling sales … and is now moving into the stallion business as well. A thoroughbred haven encompassing 2000 acres of lush pasture with five kilometres of Loddon River frontage, the Eddington based farm is just 90 minutes from Melbourne Airport and, in a short time, has become one of Victoria’s most successful thoroughbred farms. And they have just got bigger.
E
stablished in 2005 by Peter, Pauline, Toby and Jana Liston, Three Bridges recently expanded with the purchase of the nearby Trevenson Park property. “I fell in love with the farm 15 years ago,” said Peter Liston explains. “The property just 12
has a magical feeling with ageless old gum trees and so much passion and history from previous owners – elements that we can definitely build on.” Trevenson Park comprises of 550 acres, taking Three Bridges’ acreage in total to 2000 – plenty of room >>

Hunter Valley for a series of open days too, a clear indication that we might be down, but hardly out for the count.
The uncertain economic climate and perception that stallion fees are still too high would have us all think that most small* breeders will be keeping mares at home this spring.
Therefore you have to hand it to some stud farms which have been very proactive in the off season, dreaming up incentives to entice broodmare owners to their stallions.
And they will be too … no question about that, as the incomparable Jack Styring would say.
Kristen Manning spoke to a number of studs recently who are offering special ‘bonus’ deals this spring, all of them well aware that it’s going to take a fairly big carrot to get breeders to come out and play. Kristen’s feature commences on page 28.
But the conundrum is ... by how much? It was interesting to see that Eliza Park fielded its largest ever Open Day in late August with over 500 turning up – and it wasn’t just for the food and drink: we haven’t been reduced to soup kitchen lines … yet J

A winner on debut at 2YO, Natural Blitz possessed abundant speed, winning at Group Two level and being multiple Group One placed in a career which spanned six seasons. As tough as teak, this son of a Golden Slipper sire, Dehere, is clearly poised to leave another mark at stud. Natural Blitz stands at Cromartry Park at a fee of $3,500 - excellent value!
What's on offer
Point is, most pundits agree that by the time the results of this year’s matings have reached a ‘saleable’ age, the market will definitely be in an upswing: something to be kept in mind when pondering whether you stay at home.

Punters who snapped up the $1.90 about Rain Affair in the Group Three Missile Stakes at headquarters had plenty of cause for concern in the finishing stages of this prestigious weight for ager: a kind of seasonal pipe opener for some of Sydney’s best sprinters.
10
www.tracktotrack.com
Rain Affair took up his usual position in front from the get go, and hence giving no obvious cause for concern – particularly as in his previous six wins he’d led early and never let go. Indeed, the winning mares prior to the Missile were 5, 3.3, 2.8, 5.8 and 5.8 lengths and his only defeat to date was when shuffled back to midfield over 1100m at Canterbury.

But the 4YO flyer showed there was plenty of ticker under the hood and prevailed by the shortest of margins. Trainer Joseph Pride was clearly relieved when the number went up, promptly announced that the son of Commands had put in his last performance for this campaign. But what – apart from being blindingly fast – makes Rain Affair the wheat among everyone else’s chaff?
DON STOREY

www.tracktotrack.com
Well, that would be his pedigree: a son of Commands out of the Octagonal mare, I Believe. Right away that sets any buff’s bells ringing.
(It’s not quite kissin’ cousins, but emanating from the bottom half of the pedigree too is a 4 x 4 to Sir Tristram through the aforementioned Zabeel and his Golden Slipper winner Marauding). She was some mare that Eight Carat: linebred, in her own right to Nearco through a son and daughter, she would produce six winners from seven to race including Group One winners Diamond Lover, Kaapstad, Our Marquise, Mouawad and 10-time G1 winner Octagonal. Although Octagonal hasn’t exacted replicated his track deeds in the breeding barn, he is after all the sire of 11time Group One winner and Australia’s newest Champion Sire in Lonhro. But back to Eight Carat … her other descendants include Danewin and Commands – both brothers – both Group Ones – both leading sires, Group One winners Tristalove, Viking Ruler, Don Eduardo, Kempinsky, De Beers, Emerald Dream, Viscount, Marquise and Shower of Roses, plus a host of ‘lesser’ black type winners. But that’s just the top half … so to speak.
Commands is of course by super sire, Danehill, from the My Swanee mare, Cotehele House, in turn a daughter of the British born mare Eight Carat.
Rain Affair was bred by Don Storey, whose contribution to the Australian thoroughbred industry has been substantial: as a breeder, owner and administrator.
Octagonal, on the other hand, is by Zabeel out of Eight Carat, giving Rain Affair a 3 x 3 to one of Australasia’s most influential mares in the past four decades.
Now 80, Don was a committeeman of the Sydney Turf Club for many years and – via his interest in breeding – was instrumental in nurturing a number of prominent fillies

and mares events on the turf calendar. And he has certainly been instrumental in nurturing the family that is Rain Affair! Now only did he breed Rain Affair and his multiple Sydney winning three quarter brother, Anything, Don also bred the dam, I Believe, the granddam Rain In Spain, the third dam, Rain Cloud, the fourth dam, Little Shower, the fifth dam, Rain Shadow – all sourced from his Helios mare Rain Mist (1955).

GROUP ONE RACING
THERE’S A PATTERN
A
T THE TURN into the new season, the Australian Racing Board Pattern Committee released its recommendations for 2011/12 and it looks a safe bet that there won’t be too much fur flying at their findings.
BLACK CAVIAR
From an outsider’s perspective, it would appear that some of the group’s calls are clouded by state or club parochialism, but on the whole, this committee is represented by dedicated professionals who spend many hours, above and beyond, crunching stats as to why a race is deserving of elevation or relegation. This year the axe has fallen on the WATC Derby (probably a bit overdue), but what the west lost on the swing they picked up on the roundabout when the Winterbottom Stakes was lifted from Group Two to Group One status. Hardly surprising really when you consider Winterbottom winners in the past six years include Ortensia (Group winner in three states), Takeover Target (9 Group One victories), Marasco (9 Group victories) and Miss Andretti (5 G1s).
SO YOU THINK 16
www.tracktotrack.com
Trust me though when I say that a quick glance over the winner’s form to make a determination is far from the case … more likely what the last horse had for breakfast
that morning is taken into consideration. Apart from the WATC Derby/ Winterbottom switcheroo, there were five races upgraded from Listed to Group Three (Hobart’s Bow Mistress, Doomben’s BJ McLachlan, Flemington’s Maybe Mahal and a pair at Rosehill – the Neville Sellwood and Epona Stakes). Meanwhile the Randwick City Stakes and Tasmanian Derby were dropped from Group Three to Listed, while Toowoomba Cup was de-Listed. Included in this month’s edition of Track To Track is a rundown of the 68 Group Ones for 2011/12, along with a listing of each of the Group One winners from 2010/11. Interestingly, of the 68 races, 10 horses won multiples: Black Caviar (6), So You Think (4) and More Joyous (4), while Hay List, Helmet, Response, Sacred Choice, Sepoy, Shamrocker and Yosei produced pairs. Therefore, that means 50 horses won at the elite level, leaving some 31,000 horses that didn’t. If yours was one of the 31,000, keep your chin up … there’s always this season!

STATISTIC AL FEATURE
Breeding theories abound in the thoroughbred world … really, they are a dime a dozen. And until such time as we can ‘lift the hood’ or cosy up to a real-life Dr Doolittle, then all us will have to continue guessing. That said, one theory – while hardly failsafe – still gains credence in many quarters … ‘nicks’.
W
HILE perhaps not as complex as other ‘pursuits’, the study of nicks has warranted many a night burning the midnight oil. Nothing comes easy in this game. Or does it? We refer you to Andrew Stewart of the N Z-based/internationally renowned, Arion Pedigrees, a veritable wealth of online information. “One of the new sire reports available on Arion Pedigree’s relaunched website (www. arion.co.nz) is the Grid Based Nick Report,” Andrew explains, “If you are a broodmare owner,
ENCOSTA DE LAGO
24
www.tracktotrack.com
it allows you to enter the sire of your broodmare and test various sire crosses. “As a stallion owner/studmaster you can see which crosses work with your stallion, whether you are promoting a newly retired horse or an established sire. The blank tabulated pedigree allows you to enter stallion names in any spot to test the success or failure of that cross. Best of all, what you get are factual results – a statistical summary together with a list of the best horses resulting from that particular cross.” As an example of what’s available, Arion has supplied a run down of the cross between two powerhouses
SIR TRISTRAM
of Australasian breeding – Encosta de Lago and Sir Tristram. Clearly it’s a match that’s made heaven for quite a few breeders. And while the Grid Based Report comes with the usual disclaimer, one thing is for sure … a couple of mouse clicks is a whole lot quicker than spending hours under a desk lamp. Hoofnote. Also check out the Bel Esprit x Snippets nick which has produced 14 individual winners from 14 starters (taking into account both Snippets mares and daughters of Snippets mares: the first line throws up new sprint sensation Bel Sprinter, while Black Caviar (out of a Desert Sun mare, out of a Snippets mare) is another product of the nick. Oh, and one more … Lonhro over Night Shift has produced 12 named foals – 10 of them raced – eight of them winners including Group winners Beaded, Parables, Trim and Dysphonia.

Tough times call for innovative measures and as KRISTEN MANNING discovers, a lot of studs are coming up with new ways to entice breeders.
A
ustralian Stud Book statistics show that, for each of the last five years, there has been a decline in the number of mares returned: and if word of mouth is anything to go by, the industry could be in for another tough year. Thus, never has the competition for broodmares been stronger and this is reflected in the number of deals being offered by studs for the 2011 spring. And not just the usual reduced prices – stud masters are racking their brains to come up with different approaches to selling stallion nominations. One popular method of getting the mares in is the “early bird” deal. Several studs have put this out there for 2011, i.e. a discounted rate for those who book in early. Swettenham Stud introduced the concept four years ago.

Lynden Park Thoroughbreds, which stands four times Group One winner Golden Snake at Bombora Downs on the Mornington Peninsula, is also trying out an early bird deal … the first 25 mares booked getting in for half price. “The reality of the current climate is that everyone is doing it tough,” Lynden’s Julie Nairn explains. “We realise that we need to jump into the fray and offer a very competitive deal on our stallion if we want to give him a good opportunity to cover another good book of mares. “A lot of our clients are not really sure if they are going to breed their mares: some breeders just can’t afford to pay more, and some may only want to send out one mare this season. “So if breeders are prepared to help us by entrusting their mares into our care, we are prepared to tighten our belts
and provide the best service and deal we can offer.” Whilst Nairn is prepared to offer such a deal, she is concerned that some deals may not prove good ones in the long run: “some sound great at the time but in reality do not help out the stallion or the breeder long term – if it sounds too good to be true it probably is! “It’s got so competitive at present,” she added, “that you may be offered a free set of golden steak knives with ever booking!” It has been so far, so good with Nairn’s offer though: “we’ve had a good response from both local clients and interstate – people from as far up as northern Queensland who are prepared to send their mares down.” Other studs are crafting their deals in an effort to lure multiple bookings, with Swettenham Stud offering mare owners >>

a $20,000 fee for three nominations to Bianconi, Dash For Cash, Host, Kaphero, Keep The Faith and Soldier’s Tale. Widden Stud has two such deals on offer this year – “The Golden Slipper winners” ($71,500 for two mares to Stratum and Sebring) or two mares to either Northern Meteor, Sebring and Star Witness for $55,000 … sizeable savings on the advertised fees. “We’ve been listening to our clients and have been looking at ways we can help breeders to get their mares covered by the best possible sires at a price that is affordable,” Widden’s Antony Thompson said. “We expect these new packages to generate considerable interest.” Eliza Park’s concept is a little different – the “Eliza Park Filly Bonus” which allows a breeder to use any two stallions from a selection of five (Astronomer Royal, Bushranger, Sharkbite, Dissolved and Shinzig) for $11,000 and if the mare produces a filly, the owner is offered a free return for the following season. “We’re not sexist, the market is!” being their slogan.
“The simple matter is the market – from a commercial perspective – is prejudiced against fillies. They don’t sell as well as colts and in this climate you need as much going in your favour as possible. “That said, we’re taking plenty of bookings from people who can’t believe their luck because they prefer fillies anyway. I can’t imagine anyone complaining if they ended up with a Black Caviar!” Eliza Park’s usual terms – no service fee payable until March 31 next year – apply as well as a free return even if the mare is sold in the meantime. Meanwhile, Three Bridges Thoroughbreds’ Peter Liston, keen to promote his first season sire Stryker, is offering breeders a lifetime breeding right if they send a mare to him in each of his first three seasons at the $11,000 service fee. “If they help us get him going, we’ll reward them with a lifetime breeding right and that gives them plenty of encouragement to send a nice mare,” Liston said. A common complaint from breeders is that, when a
“It’s tough out there for breeders,” Eliza Park’s nominations manager Mark Lindsay said, “and hopefully the Fillies Bonus will provide the impetus for broodmare owners to breed their mares rather than leave them in the paddock for a year. “Not surprisingly, we’ve fielded a lot of calls about the bonus – some of them curious as to why Eliza Park would let them come back for free if they end up with a filly. BONUS FEATURE stallion’s fee drops drastically from one year to the next, they have paid overs. Swettenham Stud recognise this and have in place a “Capital Investment Protection Scheme.” “For example,” said Swettenham’s Ian Rimington, “you pay $16,000 one year and the fee then drops to $12,000. Instead of losing
along with interstate travel rebates. Two other alluring enticements are those being offered by Grange Thoroughbreds, home to Pillar Of Hercules and Recast. For those sending mares to the former, there is a 50% reduction in price if the

$4,000 before the foal is born you can take a $2,000 credit into the next year.” And Swettenham is happy for this to work both ways: if a stallion’s fee increases, that is “if he is $10,000 and rises to $20,000, you get in for $15,000”. Swettenham offers several other deals also, including the “Swettenham Loyalty Bonus” (rewarding those using their stallions three years running)
broodmare owner pays the fee within 30 days of invoicing – a good way Grange’s Gary Mudgway feels, “to get the cash flow going”. And for Recast, a fixed priced deal on a 12 month contact is on offer: “I describe it as similar to a mobile phone contract,” Gary said, “pay a fixed price per month and you get the handset for free!” In other words, by sending a mare to Grange Thoroughbreds for a year and pre-paying each monthly bill, the breeder gets a nomination to Recast, all agistment for mare and foal (including hard feed), worming, farrier trims, foaling and weanling fees and started vet costs. And so, whilst at first glance it looks a difficult time for breeders, they may well be able to turn the situation to their advantage by placing their mare at the right stud … with the right deal.

GENERAL SIRES' PREMIERSHIP
LONHRO Outstanding effort by Darley’s headliner who has jumped from # 153 on the billboard to the premier spot in just three seasons. Beaded was the main money spinner for the son of Octagonal but ultimately was just one of 14 stakes winners for the new champ: henceforth Lonhro was leading sire by earnings and by individual stakes winners.
Special mention also to …
COMMANDS Most winners for the second year in a row, edging out Encosta de Lago by four. Between them the pair have sewn up the premiership – by winners – for the past four seasons.

2YO SIRES' PREMIERSHIP ELUSIVE QUALITY A foregone conclusion a long way from home after Sepoy won both the Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond, giving the Gone West stallion – who has gone east – a margin of close to a million bucks, from runnerup and third crop sire Not a Single Doubt.
Special mention also to …
EXCEED AND EXCEL Huge effort … 23 juvenile winners in any season is remarkable and Elusive City’s former stablemate, had eight to spare on the wire. It was the second year in a row that Exceed And Excel has taken out the ‘winners’ title and seven more than last season. To put it in perspective, Redoute’s Choice equaled the tally back in 2004/05.
And let’s not forget …
WRITTEN TYCOON First Victorian based sire in a decade to capture the Australian First Season Sires’ premiership. The Eliza Park stallion held off some late challenges from the Darley pair of Ad Valorem and Nadeem and is poised for another successful season.

BROODMARE SIRES' PREMIERSHIP
DANEHILL He’s gone but never forgotten! Firstly, he again showed us the money, clearing out from Zabeel by a $7.5 million and his daughters produced 20 stakes winners – five of them at Group One level. He was also 78 winners in front of Zabeel, so in terms of ‘thrillers’, this wasn’t one of them. Danehill has now won the past 6 broodmare titles and the way he’s going, proably the next 16!
Special mention also to … No-one really: Danehill’s in a league of his own

PPLICATIONS are underway for the 2012 Breeding Course, held at the Irish National Stud in Kildare, and already demand far exceeds the 20 or so places on offer, despite the fact that applications don’t close until 1 November this year. Many of the applications are
ational received from abroad and with such strong international competition for places it is little wonder the course has
become a source of future, elite industry professionals. The course is full-time residential, so all students are accommodated on the farm, with meals provided in its own canteen by professional staff. There is also a TV room, pool table, tennis court and badminton hall, should the practical morning studies and intensive evening lectures leave enough free time! The Irish National Stud is just outside Kildare town, 40 miles south of Dublin, and the Stud and adjoining Japanese Gardens is a popular tourist destination, attracting almost 150,000 visitors each year and providing students with plenty of interest. While the course doesn’t come cheap, it could be called one of the safest investments available >> in racing!

BRIAN MEEHAN
The first Thoroughbred Breeding Course was held at the Irish National Stud in 1971 and it remains the best-known equine training program in the world to this day, with the aim of educating young people for a career in the breeding industry … although graduates have also been prominent in racehorse training, bloodstock sales, transport, insurance and the media. No less than three graduates have gone on to
train Breeders’ Cup winners, Eoin Harty, Frank Lyons and Brian Meehan, and other eminent international racehorse trainers who graduated from the INS include Paul Messara. Many of the best-known studs

Unlike University-based programs, the INS offers training of a practical nature and is designed to provide students with a hands-on approach to every aspect of horse breeding. The course starts in February each year and involves yard work during the day and a lecture

each evening, culminating in exams and prize giving in July. Students rotate around the various yards on a weekly basis and also spend time in the stallion barn, foaling unit and laboratory. Lectures are not only given by the stud staff, but by prominent members of the bloodstock industry. The syllabus varies slightly from year to year, but generally covers all aspects of the science and art of horse breeding. In the latter part of the course visits are arranged to other stud farms, racing stables and sales companies, and students are encouraged to follow the progress of Irish and International racing and breeding during the season, which is often incorporated into course projects. Written, oral and practical exams are held at the end of the course and successful candidates receive the Irish National Stud certificate, possibly the closest thing there is to a gold pass in this industry! Indeed, there is always a huge demand for graduates of the course from other studs in Ireland and abroad and, while job placement is not guaranteed, the Stud can usually help to find employment within the industry.
In the 40 years of the Breeding Course graduates have gone on to establish themselves throughout the world and many take great pleasure in returning to the stud for the graduation ceremony, to offer assistance to students and to participate in the education program as lecturers. Past graduates include Christy Grassick, Manager of Coolmore Stud; Joe Osborne, Managing Director of Kildangan Stud; Henry Beeby, CEO Goffs and Doncaster Bloodstock Sales; Todd Watt, Director and Auctioneer Tattersalls; Brian Meehan, Gerard Butler, Eoin Harty and Paul Messara, Racehorse Trainers; Case Clay, President of Three Chimneys Farm, Kentucky; Dermot Farrington, Bloodstock Agent; Brendan Gallagher, Bloodstock Agent and Emerald Transport; Michael O’Hagan, MD of Irish Thoroughbred Marketing; Liam O’Rourke, Manager of Dalham Hall Stud; and Gerry Dilger, Owner of Dromland Farm Kentucky. RACING
IN IRAQ When the word – Baghdad – comes up in conversation, horse racing isn’t the first thing that springs to mind. Indeed, for most Aussies the only connection between Iraq and a day at the sports would be Baghdad Note, winner of the 1970 Melbourne Cup. But, as LISSA OLIVER reports, racing in Iraq is not only a going concern … it’s thriving!

W
hile most racecourses worldwide are struggling to maintain attendance figures, there is a most unlikely racing venue gaining rapidly in popularity. The reasons for its resurgence, however, are not likely to be sought by its counterparts elsewhere! The Baghdad Equestrian Club, situated in Amariya on the western outskirts of Iraq’s capital (in an area once noted as a hotbed of militant Sunni insurgency), is providing one of the few sources of leisure for the people of this war torn country. Founded by the British in 1920, the racecourse holds meetings every Tuesday and Saturday and was disrupted for only three months during the war: at the
outbreak of the US invasion in 2003. Throughout the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s the Baghdad track was the glamorous place to be seen, the most prestigious racetrack in the Middle East, however it has lost out in modern years to Dubai and other up-and-coming racing neighbours. Nevertheless, horseracing has served as sport, leisure and relief for the people of Iraq, where cinemas still stand empty after their closure during the troubles and the racecourse attracts around 2,000 racegoers at every meeting. Despite gambling being objected to in the Quran, the racecourse also provides many people with their only chance of escaping poverty. It may be outlawed by Islam, but gambling is alive and strong at the Baghdad race track: “Three-quarters of the people here are unemployed,” one regular >>
>> www.tracktotrack.com
45
SPECIAL FEATURE racegoer told the media, “some of them go robbing and looting to get money to come and gamble here. It wasn’t like this in Saddam’s time, when the law was strong.” Another racegoer agrees, saying: “People used to come here after Friday prayers just for fun, without gambling, but now no one would come for pleasure. We are ashamed to bet. It is against Islam, but it is a way to make money. None of us have jobs any longer.” “The betting money all goes to the owners and for the employees’ salaries … there’s no profit at all,” Dr Muhammad Mahmoud Najem, the club’s chief vet and registrar of the Iraqi Arabian Horse Organisation, told B BC News reporter Jim Muir last year. “Believe me, the owners are losing money. There’s a big shortage of medicines and vaccines for the horses. We have big health problems. Nobody bothers with it, they’re busy looking after cattle and sheep and other commercial operations.” Mahmoud Najem has worked at the racecourse for the past 30 years and recounted how horse owners had to club together and put up funds for the facilities to be restored. The grandstand, started by a French company in Saddam Hussein’s era, remains unfinished, but the thousands who pour through the turnstiles twice a week don’t appear to mind. If there was a roof to raise they would raise it, like any other racegoers all over the world, as they 46

enthusiastically cheer on their chosen horse in each of the six races per meeting. And it isn’t only about the gambling. “There’s no other place like this in Baghdad, where you can go and have a good time,” said one regular. “It’s not the money that brings us here, it’s seeing the horses. It’s like a fraternity. We leave our differences at the gate. There are no Sunnis or Shias here. Just people who love horses.” Once state-owned, the racecourse is now controlled by a consortium of Shiite and Sunni businessmen, so it truly is uniting a once stricken community. “This is the only place in the country where you can find national unity,” pointed out Mohammed Baha, the track’s security chief. The course offers a safe place for Iraqi men to come and drink and gamble without fear of attacks by Islamic extremists, even though those who see it as a threat to Islam continually paint slogans on the walls outside. In response to such criticism, Khalif Alain, the director of the Club, pointed out: “Almost all Islamic countries have racetracks and the Prophet Mohammed also raced.” Among the more religiously conservative is the current government, which is having its affect on the racecourse budget. General Secretary Taleb Abdul Hussein, who has worked in racing for 40 years, described how state subsidies were cancelled overnight and the club faced bankruptcy. It no longer
SPECIAL FEATURE receives any government support. “After the collapse of the regime, horse owners and track council members began to finance the club on their own. We are a very small and very close community, racing. Built through its relationships we persevered, through our own friendships, resolving problems on our own.” “It was very difficult,” Dr Muhammad Mahmoud Najem said, “American troops were here, with their tanks parked on the racetrack. After that, there were difficult times. Many horses were killed or died. Many owners left Iraq, jockeys went to neighbouring countries, but then things gradually began returning to normal.”

It is hoped that new investors will restore the Club to its former glories. “We hope some companies will invest in racing,” course vet Jamal Rashid told the B BC, “so we can complete the infrastructure and the stands, and support the horses properly, so we can come up to international level.”
I RAQ, JOC KEYS
The strength of community touched on by Taleb Abdul Hussein is seen to good affect in the daily support and upkeep of the track. Looking after much of the course’s operations is long time employee and course electrician, Hamid Ismail. When the course commentator fled the country at the outbreak of the invasion, Ismail took over his role and not only calls the races, but is in charge of the starter’s bell, too. His role is one

Like any racecourse, disgruntled punters occasionally voice complaints of corruption and race-fixing, suggesting jockeys regularly take bribes, but racecourse regulars such as Khaleed al-Rubaie sum it all up in a statement we can all recognise: “Horse breeding now is difficult and it costs a lot, but it is also entertaining. There is nothing more beautiful than horses. Horses are beautiful and horse riding and races are entertaining. It is an entertainment club.” Entertaining it may be, but there are many who depend on it for a livelihood and in that respect the picture is far from rosy. Jockey Firas Majeed, 32, picked up an additional 100,000 dinars (a mere AU$81) on his 80,000 dinar a month salary for riding a five-yearold European thoroughbred to victory, but knows better than most that times are very tough. “We used to have good salaries, insurance, cars, flats but now we have nothing,” he said. This is a very good get for Lynward: Alfred Nobel joins another Danehill Dancer at stud out west (ie. Cornerstone’s Shrewd Rhythm) and should be very popular based on race record and pedigree.Alfred Nobel would race eight times as a 2YO for three wins and a stakes placing, including victory in the Phoenix Stakes-G1 at the Curragh – emulating his sire who achieved the feat 14 years earlier. Alfred Nobel also won the Railway Stakes-G2 and ran third
in the Greenlands Stakes-G3. From a winning daughter of multiple stakes winner and G1 placed Dazzling Park, Alfred Nobel’s third dam is the Champion 2YO Filly Park Express. Plenty of speed!
CARDINAL VIRTUE
Bay 2005, Elusive Quality – Valourina by Snippets Standing: Waterford Stud, WA. 2011 Fee: $7,700 Ph: 0427 102 061 www.waterfordstud.com.au
Excellent value this horse: a winner at 2, he campaigned and won in 3 states – including wins over 1100m at Randwick and an 1200m at Moonee Valley; he was 7-times stakes placed, including a memorable third behind Atomic in this year’s G1 Galaxy; he’s a son of the (very) hot Gone West stallion Elusive Quality, whose 70 stakes winners world wide including this year’s Champion 2YO Sepoy, plus another Champion 2YO

(and Kentucky Derby winner) in Smarty Jones; and he’s a half to 6 winners from 6 to race – including 2YO Group winner and Golden Slipper third Media. Get yourself some virtue.
FIRST SEASON SIRES 2011
CHOISTAR
Chestnut 2006, Choisir – Sveldte by Star Watch Standing: Clear Mountain Fairview, QLD. 2011 Fee: $4,400 Ph: 0411 398 737 www.clearmountain.com.au
Clearly Choistar’s record can’t match that of another chestnut Choisir going to stud this year in Starspangledbanner, but he’s also standing for $40k less: and let’s not kid ourselves … Choistar had plenty of toe. Only lightly raced, Choistar won the Fernhill Handicap-LR at Randwick as a 2YO – scoring by 5 lengths – ran second in the Doomben Slipper-LR after coming from the tail of the field on a heavy track, finishing fourth in the TJ Smith-G1
and, at 3, ran third to million dollar earner, Graceful Anna and G1 winner Shoot Out in the Vo Rogue-G3 and he’s out of a 12 time winner and he stands for only $4,400!

Brown 2006, Lonhro – Yarralumla by Grand Lodge Standing: Eliza Park,VIC. 2011 Fee: $5,500 Ph: 03 5428 5168 www.elizapark.com.au
Dead spitting image of his now Champion Australian Sire, Lonhro and described by trainer John Hawkes as having “abundant speed and tremendous potential”. Winner of his first three outings including the VRC Moomba PlateLR over 1100m at Flemington and a $100k Inglis race, Dissolved boasts an outstanding family being out of a winning half sister to 7-time Group One winner
Grand Armee and closely related to Oakleigh Plate-G1 winner Drum, Dealer Principal and Absolute Champion.

FIRST SEASON SIRES 2011
First Season Sires 2011 Part 3 cont. KEANO (NZ)
Bay 2005, Pins – O’Really by Centaine
Standing: Anderson,VIC. 2011 Fee: $ 8,800 Ph: 0416 265 231 www.andersonbloodstock.com
The best of NZ: but unlike most Kiwis that come over and plunder our Classic and Cup riches, this bloke was fast … very fast.Winner of the QTC Lightning-LR at Eagle Farm, he also won four over the short course at Flemington and one at Moonee Valley, along with a second to Reward For Effort in the Monash-LR at Caulfield. A son of Champion NZ Sire Pins (40+ stakes winner including El Segundo, Econsul, Katie Lee),
Keano is a grandson of Champion 2YO Courtza. Brilliant family.
LOOKIN AT LUCKY (USA) Bay 2007, Smart Strike – Private Feeling by Belong to Me Standing: Coolmore Stud, NSW. 2011 Fee: $33,000 2010 fee: 02 6576 4200 www.coolmore.com
Tough climate to pitch a son of Smart Strike at $33k, but what a racehorse: accorded Champion status in his two seasons of racing, he won 5 of 6 at 2 (his only miss being a 2nd in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-G1), then went on at 3 to capture the Preakness Stakes-G1. Overall, his 13 starts produced 5 G1s, 3 G2s, and 2 G1 placings. As for the reference to Smart Strike, the first page of his resume reads: Curlin (Horse of the Year), Soaring Free (Horse of the Year), English Channel (Champion),

Fleetstreet Dancer (Japan Cup). Terrific bottom half too.
FIRST SEASON SIRES 2011
MONACO CONSUL (NZ) Bay 2006, High Chaparral – Argante by Star Way
Standing: Patinack Farm, QLD. 2011 Fee: $19,800 Ph: 0428 632 966 www.patinackfarm.com
Well, there’s probably nothing hotter than High Chaparral at the moment and Monaco Consul certainly played his role in enhancing the Sadler’s Wells sire’s rep. Although only a maiden winner back home, his first start in Australia saw him take out the Spring Champion S-G1 and at his second, the Victoria Derby-G1. He would also run third in the AJC Derby-G1, Queen Elizabeth-G1 and Caulfield Cup-G1. This might not be the horse to give you a Golden Slipper winner, but it’s unlikely you’ll be cursing your
luck as you accept a Classic trophy. One of 4 Group One winners for the up and coming High Chaparral, Monaco Consul is closely related to the likes of Niconero, Nicconi, General Nediym … and 2000 Melbourne Cup winner Brew.
PLANET FIVE (USA)
Bay 2006, Storm Cat – Six Perfections by Celtic Swing Standing: Touchstone Farm, WA. 2011 Fee: $6,050 Ph: 0416 763 861 www.touchstonefarm.com.au
Very good racehorse … phenomenal pedigree … enormous value. WA breeders should really like this bloke: he’s by Storm Cat (who is also the sire of – among many others – Statue of Liberty, the sire of locally bred Hay List) and as for the female line … Planet Five’s dam is Six Perfections, a Champion 2YO and 3YO and closely related to Champion 2YO Miesque and the Champion Sire Kingmambo. Planet Five
was no champion himself but a Group Two win at Chantilly over 1000m isn’t too shabby either.

FIRST SEASON SIRES 2011
First Season Sires 2011 Part 3 cont. REWARD FOR EFFORT
Bay 2006, Exceed And Excel – Miss Prospect by Rory’s Jester Standing: Chatswood Stud,VIC. 2011 Fee: $11,000 Ph: 03 5799 0560 www.chatswoodstud.com.au
The name says it all … Chatswood Stud were dealt a huge blow recently with the death of Lonhro’s brother Niello, but this newcomer really is the silver lining. What’s not to like? He won the Blue Diamond-G1 … and the Preview-LR … and the Monash-LR … and the Concorde-G3 … and he’s by a Danehill stallion who is clearly the pre-eminent source of juvenile talent … and he’s out of a stakes winning Rory’s Jester
mare who has also produced 4-time SW and G1 runnerup Consular.
SEVENTH REASON
Bay 2005, Sadler’s Wells – Sunday Joy by Sunday Silence. Standing: Secret Hills Farm, QLD. 2011 Fee: $5,500 2010 fee: 0406 303 807 www.secrethill.com.au
Seven reasons? Well, here’s the first six: pedigree, pedigree, pedigree, pedigree, pedigree, price. Did we mention pedigree? A son of the incomparable Sadler’s Wells, Seventh Reason is a half brother to miracle mare More Joyous, who added 4 G1s to her tally last season and is out of the G1 winner Sunday Joy, a daughter of the equally brilliant and highly influential, Joie Denise. What’s more, Seventh Reason could run – winning at Canterbury and multiple

city placed. Enough reason to visit.
FIRST SEASON SIRES 2011
SHELLSCRAPE
Bay 2006, Dane Shadow – Kisma by Snippets Standing: Wattle Grove, NSW. 2011 Fee: $8,800 Ph: 0409 394 093 www.wattlegrove.com.au
The global downturn seems to be working in the favour of breeders with fees for first season sires seemingly very realistic this year. Shellscrape is another one who fits the bill given that he’s a son of the moderately successful Danehill stallion, Dane Shadow (4 SWs), is a full brother to the multiple SW Red Tracer and hails from a fairly good family. More importantly though, HE could run … fast. In a relatively light career of 25 starts, Shellscrape won 6 and placed in 9, including victories
in the Galaxy-G1, Roman Consul-G2, San Domenico-G3 along with G1 thirds in the Ascot Vale and Lightning.
TETE DE LA COURSE Bay 2005, Galileo – Tuscan Twist by Perugino
Standing: Gold Fields,VIC. 2011 Fee: $2,200 Ph: 0417 363 710 www.equinesportsbreeding.com.au
Frankel might have put Galileo on the lips of many but the Sadler’s Wells stallion was going gang busters before the European superstar lobbed – horses like New Approach, Lush Lashes, Rip Van Winkle, Red Rocks, Teofilo, Cape Blanco and co. are just some of the G1 winners among his 85 plus SWs overall. One thing that Galileo certainly does have a knack for is putting nice types on the ground and Tete de la Course certainly didn’t miss out in that regard. Although
unraced – hence the rock bottom fee of $2,200 – Tete de la Course is a grandson of Caulfield 2YO SW, Spanglet and hails from the family of How Proud, Lemon Sorbet, Berberia and co. Worth a look.
