s there a better time to be breeding racehorses?
Seriously! Stallion fees have plummeted and the majority of stud farms are prepared to do deals on deals this season.
Editor Greg Tobin Art Director & Designer Dina Wirawan & Penelope Abrehart Web Design Paul Davies – Mibar Web Design
Take Victorian stallion, Bel Esprit, for example. His fee was slashed 50% around Easter and, since then, he’s produced winner after winner. Demand will surely outstrip supply by the time his season gets rocking and rolling.

Astronomer Royale is another. The son of Danzig will stand at a fee of $16,500 for his first season in Australia: good value for a Group One winner with that kind of pedigree.

but 12 months ago, Hard Spun – another Group One winning son of Danzig – arrived on our shores with an asking price of $33,000. This year he’s back to $22,000. Let’s face it, in light of the economic downturn, a lot of owners will be leaving their mares in the back paddock this spring. So, imagine what a reduced population of yearlings will fetch in 2012 if the market gets a bump in the next three years. And, for that matter, what are we doing spending $3 million on broodmares at the Magic Millions National if the ‘climate’ is so unsettled? Another clear incentive to breed is the ‘form’ of our two great ambassadors: Scenic Blast and Takeover Target. Scenic stood for just $16,500 when Kid Blast was foaled (despite having produced some 50 stakeswinners) while Takeover Target’s sire, Celtic Swing, took his turn in the shed for an advertised fee of $10,000. In our ‘Colour of Racing’ feature this month, we’ve dug up a famous quote from the late, great Eric Connolly who said: “money lost – nothing lost … courage lost – everything lost!” Good luck everyone. Best wishes,
Penny Verco Publisher

EN RHODES IS A FAIRLY laid back character. Other folk have dined out on a whole lot less than what Len’s achieved in a lifetime of breeding horses, but the Corowa studmaster is not the type to boast. His latest – and perhaps greatest – banner horse is the flying filly, Ortensia, who has captured the hearts and pockets of racing fans up and down the eastern seaboard. Len recalls her as being a “nice filly”. Her mum, Aerate’s Pick, has a tendency to produce athletic types and Len’s certainly seen enough of the family to make that kind of judgment call. He acquired Ortensia’s third dam, Rule The Turf, at a Melbourne sale in the mid 80s and she was promptly put in foal to Loosen Up, which was by then standing at Len’s Riverside Stud. “She (Rule The Turf) had won a couple of races – including one in town – and was originally passed in at the sale,” Len recalls. “However, I asked Frank Ford to negotiate on my behalf and that’s how I ended up with her.” Timely, to say the least. During the next two decades, the pedigree – largely due to Rule The Turf ’s half sister, Eau d’Etoile – has become one of the hottest in the Australian Stud Book. Since the start of the 90s, Eau d’Etoile produced a
Golden Slipper winner (Bint Marscay), dual Group One winner (Filante) and Australian Guineas winner (Kenny’s Best Pal), while her daughters are responsible Bollinger (Coolmore Classic-G1), Mannington (multiple stakeswinner and dam of VRC Derby-G1 winner Benicio), Group One winner Stella Cadente and Group Two winner Delinquent. Maybe in not quite so illustrious fashion but nonetheless graduating with honours is Rule The Turf ’s direct line. Her first foal, Aerate was no world beater on the track, but in the breeding barn she was more than equal to the task, producing seven winners from eight to race, including Group winner Blaze The Turf (in turn the dam of Melbourne stakeswinner Soleil) and Intelligent Star who won nine, including three at stakes level. Intelligent Star was about as ‘home bred’ as you get. Len stood both the sire, Picnicker (by Snippets), the damsire Loosen Up and owned the mare. The name probably gives it away, but Loosen Up is the sire of turf legend, Better Loosen Up, who won everlasting fame as the winner of eight Group Ones including a Cox Plate and Japan Cup. Originally standing at the Freedman family’s Hardwicke Stud in Yass, Loosen Up shifted to Riverside when Lee Freedman took up training in 1983. (Len also stood 7-time Group One winner Campaign King who, due to poor fertility, >> www.tracktotrack.com

Sending her to General Nediym in the spring of 2002, the resultant filly – Glogirl – was knocked down to Robert Anderson for $75,000 and would win a couple of races up north for veteran trainer Noel Doyle. But that was subsequent to Aerate’s Pick’s “nice” Testa Rossa filly heading to the Oaklands Junction sale ring in March ’07. Len was told the Testa filly should make $60,000 but bidding pulled up short and she was knocked down to Steve Brem for $50,000. One of the best judges in the business, Steve had been missioned to buy a filly from that family for Alister Fraser, brother to Ilala Stud owner George and great grandson of glass industry giant and Scone institution, William ‘Knockout’ Smith. Phoning Alister in Dubai to let him know that the search was complete, Steve was told to
place the filly with Mornington mentor, Tony Noonan. Alister had met Tony socially in Dubai when the latter was campaigning Benedetti at Nad Al Sheba and had struck up a friendship. The story goes that Steve and Tony crossed paths – perhaps not literally – in the men’s loo at Oaklands Junction where the former informed the latter of a new addition to the stable. But the path to true happiness never runs smoothly and, it seems that Ortensia had ‘issues’. So much so that Alister would have been happy to win a race at a Melbourne country venue. So, imagine his delight when Ortensia – whom he races with partner Emma Ridley and sister Annie, a New York based artist – won on debut at Bendigo in March last year … by five lengths. She repeated the dose at Sandown a couple of weeks later and appeared to be a good hope in the Blue Sapphire StakesLR at Caulfield, but ended up flipping over in the mounting yard and was scratched. Out for three months, Ortensia ran third at Moonee Valley and followed up with a whisker second to Dan Baroness in the Champagne-G3 before finally breaking through for a black type win in the Tranquil Star-G3. >>

Tipped out for the next six months, Ortensia really has matured into an outstanding filly, winning at Caulfield on resumption, heading to Sydney for a win in the PJ Bell-LR at Randwick and missing by a bee’s appendage in the James CarrLR, racing on a slow surface for the first time.

top it all off, Ortensia copped a shocking draw, pulling the 16 marble. At the jump, Williams settled Ortensia near the tail of the field which shocked a few in the stands, given that she’d raced much more prominently in previous outings.

Brisbane campaign. Winning the Glenlogan StakesLR at Doomben by a lazy three, it became evident that Ortensia might be balloted from the Stradbroke due to her 49.5kg allocation. So, it was on to the QTC Cup-G2 at Eagle Farm on 30 May where she needed to win to ensure a start. It turned out to be a close run thing on the heavy surface, but Ortensia prevailed by the barest of margins and the Stradbroke was now well and truly on everyone’s radar. The stipes upheld Tony’s protest and, as irony would have it, All Silent was scratched from the Stradbroke due to the heavy rain in the days leading up to the race.
Weaving her way through the pack, Ortensia would end up just over a length shy of the winner Black Piranha, but clearly lost no fans.
But this also presented a huge problem for Ortensia who is clearly not at home on rain affected surfaces.
“She would have won for sure on firmer ground,” Williams mused.

GO JUMP! Jumps racing has a rich history in Victoria, but remains under the threat of extinction. The sport lived to jump another day following a landmark decision by Racing Victoria on 18 May, but is this the final hurdle. Veteran industry observer, JACK STYRING, certainly doesn’t think so.

O JUMPING HAS WON a reprieve! Well, until next time ‌ and there surely will be a next time. Is this just a delaying process of the inevitable? After all, for as long as jumping races continue there will be falls, and horses and their jockeys will be injured. And a percentage of those injuries will be fatal: that has to be an accepted fact.
This is not something that can be swept under the carpet, so where is the point of avoiding that issue. Politically it has become too hot to handle: the mere mention of jumps racing sends bureaucrats racing for cover. >>

racing feature In reality, city race clubs have never shown a great interest, giving the impression that jumps racing is a poor relation … the black sheep we don’t like to talk about. When jumping came under fire from a minority group, city race clubs were conspicuous by their absence. Warrnambool was the only race club that stood its ground and were prepared to fight the issue right down to the wire. The future of jumps racing first came under review shortly after the inception of Racing Victoria: and only band aid solutions have been offered since. The advisory panel set up with the mission of improving standards and public perception has failed miserably. With the exception of those directly involved with jumps trainers and jockeys, the panel was top heavy with academics, who would struggle to know one end of a horse from the other. Yet these were the people who had most of the input when it came to making critical decisions, proving costly for the industry. The new modular jumps were a joke from the outset, and far from the success that was originally anticipated. A good indication of the demise of jumps racing in the city is the decision by the Victoria Racing Club and Melbourne Race Club to no longer program events at Flemington and Caulfield. Indeed, Flemington was once the mecca: the Grand Nationals 22

The late Otway Falkiner once said “if I can breed sheep to stand up to all weather conditions, I will do it as well with horses”.
There was a time when if you were not in the grandstand 20 minutes before the race, you wouldn’t find a seat!
True to his prediction, Falkiner had amazing success, breeding eight National winners, all produced on the saltbush plains of Boonoke Station near Deniliquin.
The six fences in the lane … the abattoirs treble … ‘jumbo’ a furlong later. A spectacular sight, but now just a memory.
A BRIEF HISTORY Many of the best jumpers were station bred horses and were much tougher than the present breed … it was all about survival: there was not much hand feeding on those huge properties.
That was a marvellous era for jumping with the majority of the better horses graduating through the Point to Point fixtures and the riding to hounds. If horses could not acquit themselves well at the Point to Points there was no point pressing on, as they were not going to make it in open company.

horses to cross the Irish Sea by ferry to compete. The steeplechase fences are fairly uniform, measuring a height of 4 foot 6 inches (137 centimetres) and consist of birch packed into an oak frame. Fittingly, Australia’s best jumpers have performed with distinction in England. The mighty Crisp was a tremendous example, leading for most of the journey in the Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree and was still in front after jumping the last fence. However, he was found in the run home, defeated in the last few strides by Red Rum.
Jumping is a dominant force in both Britain and Ireland where the National Hunt has a huge following in some areas: more so than flat racing. Britain has 58 racecourses, 25 of which are exclusively under the control of the National Hunt, while there are 12 courses termed as ‘dual’ purpose for both flat and jumps racing and three all weather tracks which cater for both, leaving just 18 strictly for flat racing.
on each program.
Aintree may not have suited the great Winterset, who possibly would have been much better suited at Cheltenham. He was a dashing fencer who won three Hopetoun Steeplechases at Flemington … the last with 13 stone (82.5 kg).
And there is always great rivalry between the English and the Irish to see who takes out the honours at The Festival and it’s quite common for up to 100
And, just for the record, the fences at Flemington were 46 centimetres wide at the top: nothing like the flimsy contraptions we have now. >>
Of the 27 racecourses in Ireland, only two are exclusively for flat racing: The Curragh and Laytown on the east coast. The Cheltenham Festival held in England every March by is far the biggest jumping carnival in the world: four continuous days of racing with eight races

still individuals and some take longer to complete the transition than others.
Often there is not enough patience shown in the preparation of jumpers: horses race on the flat one week and a few weeks later we see shaping up in a hurdle race.
A lot of the time when a horse is no longer capable of winning a flat race, the only alternative is to try him or her over jumps. However, in a number of instances the animal may simply be worn out … it has given its best and there is not much more to give.
Certainly they may have earned their ‘ticket’, but are they always ready for the arduous task under race conditions?
Furthermore, horses seem to have no respect for the jumps and are simply crashing through them.
The whole process is all too quick in many cases: horses are

The same method was adopted on the west coast of the United States where steeplechasing is very popular. There is quite a bit to consider. Yes, changes are now under review, but whether they will go far enough, we will have to wait and see.

Popular Queensland nursery, Burwood Stud, has stood standardbred stallions with considerable success and is on the verge of repeating the dose in the world of thoroughbreds. Renée Geelen talks to Burwood’s owners – Noel and Christine Denning – on how not and how they plan to ‘Collate’ the future.
A
FAMOUS NORTH AMERICAN studmaster once said that you should look for oil where you’ve found it previously. farm watch Burwood Stud is certainly no stranger to success with its three harness stallions serving no less than 60% of the Queensland broodmare population. Australian owned and operated by Noel and Christine Denning and sons Daniel & Jonathon for over 30 years, Priding themselves on providing quality services to both ‘codes’, the Dennings have set fees which ensure that enthusiasts can participate at all levels. With three harness and one thoroughbred stallion … many permanently agisted broodmares … and over 150 visiting mares throughout the breeding season, Burwood Stud is a busy, energetic operation. The move to widespread use of artificial insemination (AI) in standardbreds in 1996 brought about a new era for Burwood Stud, allowing their three stallions to become within reach of all Australian and New Zealand breeders. With the success that AI has brought Burwood Stud, we asked Noel if he would be keen to embrace that technology in thoroughbreds?
2008 FILLY COLLATE X ROYALTIES
This is a pertinent topic for the thoroughbred industry with a ‘restraint of trade’ court case being proposed by former STC chairman Bruce McHugh. “Burwood Stud was in a strong position to take advantage of AI in standardbreds when the restriction on book sizes was lifted in 1996,” Noel points out. “We already stood stallions at the top of the market, and we could use this to invest in
top quality stallions from the USA to further strengthen our market position. “However, the downside of AI is that it reduced the number of stallions that were used by broodmare owners, and therefore reduced the amount of competition in the market place. “I believe that if AI was allowed in thoroughbreds that the middle and lower parts of the market would be decimated; leaving, for instance, our stallion Collate with few mares. “I think, as a decently bred Group winner, Collate deserves his chance at stud, and it would be a shame to reduce the variety that thoroughbred breeders currently enjoy under a natural only situation.” Collate is by Golden Slipper winner Catbird and commenced his stud career in 2007, with his first crop rising yearlings.

In total, Collate won six races from 15 starts and over $300,000 in prize money. Interestingly, Collate is bred along similar lines to Champion Sire, Redoute’s Choice in that the former is by a Group One winning son of Danehill from a Canny Lad mare, while the latter is a Group One winning son of Danehill from a Canny Lad mare! What’s more, Collate has plenty going for him in the ‘bottom half ’: his dam, Calfree is a city winning half sister to Group Two winner Burrito and she has also left the promising five race winner in Calidan (who won at Warwick Farm in March, was fourth in the STC Sky High Stakes-LR and races out of the Jack Denham stable).

RACING
“
COLOURFUL R A C I N G IDENTITY” is a euphemism for those who tend to live life on the fringe. Basically, it’s a term used by journalists to circumvent charges of defamation from folk who would be largely offended and litigious if their true ‘identity’ were revealed publicly. That said, not all of racing’s colour is tainted by nefarious activity. Indeed, a great number of headline grabbers are remembered solely for their racetrack antics. Their deeds made them larger than life and we loved them for it. People like Eric Connolly, whose fearless punting saw fortunes fluctuate: one day a rooster, the next a feather duster.
His motto: “Money lost – nothing lost … courage lost – everything lost!” Connolly would engineer one of the greatest betting coups in Australia’s turf history by backing Amounis and Phar Lap in the 1930 Caulfield/ Melbourne Cups feature double – winning a reported £200,000. A massive fortune. When he died 14 years later, Connolly left an estate of approximately £6,000. Over the next few issues, we will look at some of the racing identities who, by dint of their exploits, added plenty of colour to racing’s great tapestry.
WILLIAM LANG We can’t be sure if William Lang was the first bloke ‘warned off ’ racecourses, but he’d have to be close.
Arriving in Australia in 1839, Lang got into a stink with stewards at the Gisborne racetrack about the right to ride one of his horses. The Victoria Turf Club disqualified Lang for five years, but young William decided to take the matter to the Supreme Court which claimed it was all some huge misunderstanding and found in favour of the plaintiff. Lang’s lawyers then argued the Club’s right to impose such a disqualification in the first place and after suggesting that ‘citizens should be appointed trustees and take over racing’, the Club hastily rescinded Lang’s disqualification. Lang and his brother Thomas also had grazing rights of a block of land which would later become known as Flemington racecourse.

JIM ‘THE GRAFTER’ KINGSLEY
When the jockey was about to mount the scales, Grafter would stamp his foot and said accomplice would whack on the additional lead to ensure correct weight. It all went well until one day at Newcastle when the Grafter’s horse, Gentleman Jim, was allocated 67.5kgs in a welter and, as a consequence, bookies were prepared to lay the horse. Despite the ‘weight’ Gentleman Jim duly lobbed, but on the way to the weigh in, Grafter was accosted by an angry bookie and a scuffle ensued. Breaking free, Kingsley raced to the scales only to be told that his hoop had weighed in a massive 13kgs ‘light’. The puffing and pudgy Kingsley said there must be some mistake and, stamping his foot, demanded that the jockey be reweighed.
JIM KINGSLEY
They say that weight will stop a train, but little could stop the 120kg (19 stone) juggernaut called Jim ‘The Grafter’ Kingsley. Running a doubles book at school, he became a country owner/trainer in his teens and earned his nickname from the number of rorts he was always keen to pull. Kingsley’s most famous ‘graft’, however, was digging secret tunnels under the weigh in scales at several racecourses, where he concealed accomplices with lead weights.

meat pie. Right next to his head was a wire with a loop on the end containing a lead weight which, as you’ve probably guessed, weighed exactly 13kgs. Heading to nearby Wallsend, where Gentleman Jim had won the week prior carrying 62.5kgs, they discovered a similar set up under the scales. The Grafter got ‘life’ but it didn’t stop him: one afternoon he was escorted from Randwick racecourse 16 times before returning to back the winner of the last.
SQUIZZY TAYLOR
Sure enough, this time the jockey weighed in correctly and officials had no option but to declare correct weight and Kingsley collected his loot – over £15,000. But officials were smelling something fishy and decided to investigate, finding a wire running through a hole bored into the floor directly under the plate of the scales. Checking out back, they moved some bushes and found a trapdoor which gave access to the area below the floor. Lo and behold, directly under the scales they found a coat, a bag of fruit and a kid eating a

Taylor soon drifted into a life of crime, deriving his income from prostitution, sly grog, armed robbery, cocaine dealing and protection rackets. You can chuck a couple of murders into the mix as well. Somewhat surprisingly, Squizzy wasn’t invited to any committee room luncheons and after being kicked off Caulfield racecourse, he allegedly returned the night before the 1922 Caulfield Cup with a box of matches, burning down the Members’ Stand, Judge’s Box, Weighing Room, Committee Room, Stewards’ Room, Secretary’s Office, Press Reserve, Telegraph and Telephone Office. This repugnant little spiv got his just desserts some five years later however when he gunned down a bed-ridden ‘colleague’, only to find that his fellow crim had a pistol under the pillow and squared the ledger. Never forgetting his roots, later in life Perce would hand sellers a dollar note for a 5 cent paper. At 16, Perce worked as a milkman and just prior to World War II, became a wharfie. There were some tough days
More importantly, it appears there is still quite a bit of money out there for the right cattle, as emphasised by the $3 million for Princess Coup. The mare was always going to make big dough. Winner of four Group Ones and over $4 million in stakes, the Willow Park consigned daughter of Encosta de Lago was eventually knocked down to NSW based agent, Tony Bott, after bidding had kicked off at $500,000. It was a banner homecoming for Princess who first saw the inside of the Gold Coast ring four years ago when sold at the National Yearling Sale.

JIM LAKE It may be referred to as the Sport of Kings, but where would we be without the butchers, bakers and candlestick makers? This is the story of an unassuming, yet determined bloke who has gone from clippers to cups.
J
IM LAKE DIDN’T start training horses until he was 40.
Spending most of his life around the Riverina district – Barham, Cohuna, Gunbower and the like – he grew up on a dairy farm and, as a kid, worked in the shearing shed.
his daughter is now a highly accomplished equestrienne. Chasing his dream, Jim settled on a 50 acre property at Gunbower, which boasts a private 1200m track, and grows a bit of lucerne on the side. Always willing to lend a hand, Jim looks after the local track as well.

Clocking up 67 years, Jim shows Jim takes up the story: “I was With a justified degree of pride, no signs of slowing and still contacted by Tony Penglase Jim talks about how he kicked rides his horses work and shoes who has had a bit of luck of late off as a roustabout before them himself. with horses like Count To Zero eventually running the shearing and Danzylum. show. RACEGOERS WITH A FAIR SORT OF MEMORY MIGHT RECALL THE DEEDS OF A STEED CALLED FAIR PAINT WHO RACED IN JIM’S COLOURS BACK IN THE EARLY 80’S. FAIR PAINT, WHOM JIM PURCHASED FOR JUST $500, WOULD WIN THE SCHWEPPES 1200 AT FLEMINGTON AND 23 OTHER RACES IN A STERLING 106 START CAREER. BY THE TIME THEY’D HUNG UP HIS RACING PLATES, FAIR PAINT HAD BROUGHT HOME A CHEQUE IN 76 STARTS FOR $142,390 IN STAKES.
“The most I’d ever spent on a horse up until then was $2,000. “But Tony – and his partner Julie (Estep) – are terrific people and are very patient. They want their horses right for the day and don’t ever push you to race them before they are ready.” De Mars didn’t start for almost a year, but after a pair of cheques at Kyneton and Swan Hill, he broke through for his maiden victory at Kilmore in December 2007.
Jim only has the two horses in work with the other – Twin Warrior – also owned by Tony and Julie.
The horse has now won seven and placed on six occasions from 23 outings for over $115,000 in stakes.
Unfortunately Twin Warrior did quite a bit of damage in a recent float incident and won’t be sighted for a while.
Sent out favourite in the Mildura Cup, De Mars stormed home to win by a panel from Produced and Group Two winning 6YO Stanzout.
But Jim reckons Twin Warrior has his share of ability too and he’ll just bide his time and get the horse right.
Interviewed after the race, Jim gave fair warning to future rivals: “He’s only a 4YO coming through : he’s not mature yet … not quite there yet.” (De Mars was due to race in the Swan Hill Cup on 7 June – a race in which he ran third to Diamonds at Dawn last year – but the meeting was washed out).
JIM LAKE WITH HIS BELOVED DE MARS
While other trainers who have just lost half their stable would be mortified, Jim Lake is more than content to fly solo with De Mars and will choose carefully as to where they chart their course. One thing’s for sure: De Mars is by Grass Wonder and Jim is a bloody wonder. Chalk another one up for one of racing’s good guys.

ID YOU K N OW T H AT gauges are filled w i t h liquid to avoid early fatigue from vibration or to dampen the indication due to pulsating pressure? Well, until surfing the Ross Brown Sales website, it was certainly news to me. Another thing you notice about the Ross Brown site is that they sell a LOT of products. P r e s s u r e measurement, temperature calibrators, gas meters, c o m p r e s s o r s, filters … in fact, if it’s got a gauge on it, chances are they sell it.
Channel 9 on Sunday nights. That said, the RayTemp 8 thermometer should be of interest to anyone who has ever run a hand down a horse’s leg checking for heat and filling. Obviously some people know what they’re doing and others just think they do. Either way, the RayTemp 8 removes the guesswork by allowing an exact temperature reading. Basically, the RayTemp 8 is an infrared, non-contact thermometer with laser
Problems with tendons, ligaments, shins and splints are easily detected with regular scanning and the digital read out allows you to keep accurate records. The RayTemp 8 works on legs that are wet or dry and the amount of hair on the leg generally doesn’t make a difference to the readings. After the horse has worked, simply take a few seconds to scan your horse’s legs and you’ll soon learn his or hers ‘normal’ temp.
This can potentially save you heaps on vet bills by not having to hit the PROBLEMS WITH TENDONS, LIGAMENTS, SHINS AND SPLINTS ARE panic button.
EASILY DETECTED WITH REGULAR SCANNING AND THE DIGITAL READ OUT ALLOWS YOU TO KEEP ACCURATE RECORDS.
They must be pretty good at it too with this privately owned Australian company kicking off in 1957 and employing 30 staff in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland, with an agent in Perth. Yet, while the product range and bona fides are clearly impressive, I wouldn’t know a mbar/hPa if I tripped over it, while I always thought PSI was something they show on
alignment that will instantly indicate hot spots in your neddy’s leg. Simply aim and pull the trigger (often tempting!) and the temperature will be displayed on the digital LCD. A difference of as little as plus / minus 2 degrees Celsius should warrant keeping a watchful eye on proceedings as it could easily develop into an incapacitating injury.
The ETI Infrared Equine Kit comprises the RayTemp 8 t h e r m o m e t e r, right-angled rectal probe and a tub of anti bacterial probe wipes. The rectal probe probably comes with a government health warning for those who like to live close to the edge and we respectfully suggest that a degree of competency is required. The kit weighs in under $300 inc. GST and, for further information, phone the Ross Brown Sales hotline on (02) 4883 4800.

W
E ALL KNOW M E N w h o h a v e b e e n known to chase fillies around all year, rain hail or shine, grey skies or blue. Horses, on the other hand are seasonal long day breeders. A stallion’s interest and ability for that matter, in all things reproductive, is at its quietest during the winter months of May through June, returning to priority one in late spring as the days get longer. Mares, like their male counterparts, typically display a period of anestrus through winter. During this time, the release of reproductive hormones such as GnRH from the brain is drastically reduced. As a result follicular d eve l o p m e n t is inhibited and the mare fails to cycle. Fo l l ow i n g the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice in June, the levels and activity of the re productive h o r m o n e s begin to rise, stimulating the ovary to commence cycling. This period of transition, under natural circumstances, can last 1 to 4 months or more. Many follicles will develop in size during
54
www.tracktotrack.com
this period but fail to ovulate. Mare owners unfamiliar with this pattern of seasonality may assume that their mares are ovulating and may present them for breeding. There is little chance of pregnancy because, unfortunately, little or none of these early follicles will ovulate. The lengthy transition period displayed by mares presents an economic cost for mare owners and stud managers alike. Given that foals are aged from 1 August in the southern hemisphere, breeders are compelled to strive for earlier foaling. This in turn ensures pressure to have mares actively cycling i n
early September, a time when the majority of mares are still trapped in the period of transition. Artificial lighting protocols are commonly used to shift the period of spring transition from mid October back to mid to late August. So how can light be used to influence mares to cycle early in spring? As we have seen, reproductive activity in the mare resumes in response to increasing day length. Light entering the eye causes an increase activity of specific nerves in the brain. The activity of these nerves in turn influences the pineal gland at the base of the brain to reduce its diurnal release of melatonin
special feature
– the hormone responsible for the body’s recognition of day and night. Decreased levels of melatonin in the mare causes an increase in reproductive activity as the length of daylight increases. This can be manipulated to advance the onset of the first ovulation and hence advance the breeding season. Artificial light applied approximately 60 days from the intended breeding season is the best method of shifting the period of transition. Adding increased light at the end of the day provides best results. The classical approach is to provide 14 to 16 hours of light per day with the treatment beginning at the winter solstice (21 June) and no later than 1 July. Under this regimen mares typically begin cycling in around 65 days. A 100-watt bulb placed in a 3.66m x 3.66m box is generally used. Light levels are typically quoted as 100 lux, although in some studies as little as 20 lux of light has been shown to be effective. A general rule of thumb is that if you can easily read a newspaper in all areas of the box then the light intensity
is sufficient. This must include the corners. An alternative a p p r o a c h has been demonstrated to be effective whereby mares are subjected to 1 hour of light at 100 lux intensity 9.5 hours after sunset. This is generally between 2 and 4 am. It seems mares uniquely have a period in which they are particularly sensitive to light This period appears to be related to the timing of the onset of dusk 8-10 hours after the onset of darkness. So what are the advantages of making such an effort? By advancing the onset of the transition period in the mare it is possible to ensure mares are actively cycling once the stallion is available for covering. As a result the mare requires less covers to achieve pregnancy. In addition to decreasing the pressure of the stallion this also results in decreased veterinary visitations, decreased length of time at stud and overall ... smaller agistment bills. Bottom line ... light up! The ‘energy’ you use now, will save you later on.
In Summary • Begin no later than 1 July. • Increase light at end of day. • Provide 14 to 16 hours of light. • Ensure sufficient light to read newspaper. • Expect normal cycling by Mid September.

First Season Sires Part 3
Kristen Manning looks at the new boys in town. MUSKET www.darley.co.uk
Brown 2001, Bianconi (USA) - Posy by Marauding (NZ) Standing: Darley, NSW Ph: 08 8561 3800 www.darley.com.au 2009 fee: $11,000 (incl gst)
There was excitement in the air when this handsome Redoute’s Choice entered the ring during the evening session at the 2005 Easter Sale. He was the horse everybody had been talking about – and it took Woodlands
Stud’s bid of $2.5 million secure him. Changing hands to become part of the Darley group, Musket was a lightly raced but talented galloper who won four of 14. An easy Canterbury winner at debut, he won two Randwick races as a summer three-yearold – also recording a couple of Listed placings. Spring that year he broke
through at black type level, taking out the Gr.2 Shannon Stakes. It was to be his final win, but not his last good performance – eye-catching runs in the Royal Parma Stakes and Doncaster Handicap being his last two runs. A son of Redoute’s Choice, Musket is a three quarter brother to the superstar stayer Makybe Diva .
MYBOYCHARLIE www.vinery.com.au
Bay, 2005 Danetime (IRE) – Dulceata (IRE) by Rousillon (US) Standing: Vinery Stud, NSW Ph: 03 9580 2878 www.vinery.com.au 2009 fee: $$14,300 (incl gst)
A grandson of Danehill, Myboycharlie he is by the stakes placed Danetime who served only three full books in Australia. He fared well in Europe however, siring 26 stakes winners including two Gr.1

winners – Myboycharlie and Bushranger and one in Australia, the Kingston Town Classic winner Megatic. A Gr.1 winner of the Prix Morny, Myboycharlie was also successful at Gr.3 level at The Curragh. He hails from a family known to Australian breeders – his stakes winning grandam Snowtop is not also grandam of The Galaxy-Gr.1 winner
Snowland, the dual Listed winning sprinter Snippetson and this year’s Surround StakesGr.2 heroine Portillo. This is a prolific black type family, its other members including the Gr.1 winners Al Hareb (sire of Hareeba) and Flashing Star with plus Australian black type performers Fravashi, Pure Joy and Russian Caravan.

EXCEEDINGLY GOOD
Bay, 2005 Exceed And Excel – Common Smytzer (Snippets) Standing: Secret Hill Farms, Queensland Ph: 07 5541 1751 2009 fee: $7,700 (incl gst)
The first son of Exceed And Excel to stud, this $400,000 Easter graduate was bred by Tony Santic whose Makybe Stud has really been churning out the winners of late. A lightly raced winner of two of eight, Exceedingly Good debuted with a Listed Maribyrnong Trial victory
down the Flemington straight – starting favourite after an impressive trial victory. A month later he lined up in the Gr.3 Maribyrnong Plate and won that too, proving too strong for the subsequent Blue Diamond victor Reaan. Second in a Blue Diamond Prelude-Gr.3 (beaten by the speedy Wilander), Exceedingly Good was not far away in the Diamond and later that year earned further black type with a Vain Stakes-LR third.
Competitive with some of the best juveniles of his generation, Exceedingly Good was a fast maturer with a good deal of presence and an air of confidence. One of Exceed And Excel’s 14 stakes winners, he is out of the stakes placed dual city winning Snippets mare Common Smytzer whose 2Y0, a full sister to Exceedingly Good, is the Listed winner Common Interest.
MR MARTINI
Brown 2001, Bianconi (USA) - Posy by Marauding (NZ)) Standing: Copenhagan Stud, Vic Ph: 03 9580 2878 2009 fee: $3,025 (incl gst)
Mr Martini is a good looking brown by the well related Danzig stallion Bianconi (son of the famed broodmare Fall Aspen) – sire of 13 stakes winners including the Gr.1 winners Nicconi and Above Deck. Out of the city placed
Marauding mare Posy, he hails from the same family as the globe-trotting champ Strawberry Road who did such a good job at stud – the Australian Horse Of The Year siring 35 stakes winners inclusive of six Gr.1 winners. A racehorse with a tidy turn of foot, Mr Martini broke his maiden in a Moonee Valley mile as a spring three-yearold, racing away by over four lengths. From there he
contested the carnival’s main events for his age – winning the Bill Stutt Stakes-Gr.2, finishing a close up seventh in the Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1, a half head second to Plastered in the AAMI Vase-Gr.2 and a solid sixth in the VRC Derby-Gr.1. Losing his way for a little while, Mr Martini headed to a new trainer in Sydney where he was able to rediscover his best form – adding to his resume the Kingston Town Stakes-Gr.3.

First Season Sires Part 3 cont. NORTHERN METEOR www.widden.com
Bay, 2005 Encosta de Lago – Explosive (US) by Fappiano (US) Standing: Widden Stud, NSW Ph: 02 6549 9999 www.widden.com 2009 fee: $33,000 (incl gst)
A home-bred for Gooree, this handsome son of this season’s Champion Sire Encosta de Lago ticks all the boxes. For a start he was a terrific race horse, bursting on to the scene as a spring three-year-old, winning three in a row – a Canterbury
maiden by over four lengths, the Brian Crowley Stakes-LR by five lengths and the Coolmore Stud-Gr.1 down the Flemington straight by half a length. That was to be the last of his wins but he also raced well at his final preparation, the highlight of which was a game second to Takeover Target (Apache Cat third) in the TJ Smith-Gr.1 at Randwick. A half brother to the Gr.3
winner Queen Of The Hill out of the stakes placed Fappiano mare Explosive, Northern Meteor hails from one of the great families of the stud book. His third dam is the triple Gr.1 winner Moccasin, sister to Thong – ancestress of Nureyev, Sadler’s Wells and Fairy King. And Northern Meteor is linebred to this prolific family, Encosta de Lago being a son of Fairy King.
SEBRING
Chestnut, 2005 More Than Ready (US) – Purespeed (Flying Spur) Standing: Widden Stud, NSW Ph: 02 6549 9999 www.widden.com 2009 fee: $49,500 (incl gst)
A $130,000 Magic Millions graduate who caught the eye from the first moment he stepped onto the track, this flashy chestnut hit the ground running and was beaten only once in a six start career. From a Rosehill 2Y0 handicap in January he headed to two Listed events – taking out both
the Canonbury Stakes and Breeders Plate in easy style. Not surprisingly favourite in the Golden Slipper Stakes, he snuck up along the rails on the heavy track – holding off a late challenge by the swooper Von Costa de Hero. A Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 victory over Samantha Miss was next and that filly was able to turn the tables in the Champagne Stakes – certainly no disgraced to be beaten by her, she won five
of her next six with a Cox Plate third in the midst. A son of Vinery’s outstanding Southern Halo stallion More Than Ready who also sired this year’s Slipper winner Phelan Ready, Sebring is out of the city placed Flying Spur mare Purespeed. A half sister to the speedy four times Group winner Surtee, she hails from the historic Red Lace family of Baguette, Heirloom and Birthright.
