Triple Asset had won on debut at Hobart in October, but couldn’t quite crack it for another win at her next three outings, including a close second in the Elwick Stakes-LR and a fighting second to Peter Moody’s highly rated Golden Archer in the Gold Sovereign Stakes-LR at Launceston. The lead ups, plus his winning ride, convinced Rodd that Triple Asset would be competitive on the mainland and prompted Keys to put his prize filly on the boat.

The second paragraph of Mark Webster’s ‘Welcome’, from the Inglis Media Kit, pretty much says it all: “The annual Easter sale comprises the finest young thoroughbreds in the Southern Hemisphere and remains the number one source of racetrack Champions.” Another sale, in other hands, it’s hype. For this one, it’s gospel.

So much so that we won’t waste your time on Easter graduates and focus more on the future. For instance, the 2011 catalogue – 417 strong (plus 112 more for Session II) – contains 146 lots from stakes winning dams, 36 of those being Group One winners and nine of them Champions … Flitter, Gee I Jane, Merlene, Private Steer, Hasna, One Under, Warning Zone, Champagne, Dowry. >>

The Inglis ‘blurb’ also proudly announces that there are siblings to the last five – nay six – Group One winners down the straight six at Flemington: Newmarket

Nice mix there of the new and the tried and true with Bernardini topping the list of first season sires (in terms of representation) via his 25 entries, while Street Sense has 18, Dylan Thomas 16 and Haradasun 13. Not surprisingly, Fastnet Rock has 38 catalogued but king of the castle is Encosta de Lago with 50, followed by 44 for Redoute’s Choice, Flying Spur 31 and More Than Ready 27. Indeed, between the five just mentioned, they account for some 36% of the catalogue. It’s a tall order when you consider that four of those stallions stood at service fees of $121,000 or more in 2010 and, if the tail doesn’t wag – so to speak – there is likely to be a post sale outcry in regards to service fees for 2011. assuredly enjoy a memorable sale include Lonhro (whose 16 entries – up from 13 in 2010 – include the first foal of a half sister to Starspangledbanner) and Stratum (10 catalogued) who is as hot as can be at the moment. High Chaparral (10), Commands (10 including a half sister to a Group Two winner from La Baraka) and Danehill Dancer (13) are likely to have their moments too. Despite the sale’s reputation and obvious attractions, there is still a big question as to whether the average

steady prices from the Gold Coast to Karaka and from Melbourne to Perth this summer, a gain might be too much to wish for, but parity with Easter ’10 appears distinctly attainable. Let’s put it this way, if there’s money about, it will find its way to Newmarket. Seeing as we made such a song and dance about Mark Webster’s ‘welcoming’ second paragraph, it’s probably fitting that we finish with his introduction.

ou’d be inclined to think that if Mark Kavanagh (a given) and Laurence Eales (more than likely) attend Easter this year, they’ll be making a beeline to Stable 1 at Newmarket for a visit to the Emerald Thoroughbreds draft. No, Emerald is not selling any half brothers or sisters to Eales’ Group One stars Shocking and Whobegotyou, but the Mandalong farm definitely has a ‘connection’ with the ‘Midas touch’ owner. Emerald Thoroughbreds sold Shocking’s mum, Maria di Castiglia when she was in foal to Street Cry, while this astute operation also snapped up Whobegotyou’s dam, Temple of Peace, before the 7-time stakes winner had even raced. Although Emerald is ‘private’, its principals race a number of horses with trainers like Gary Kennewell, Peter Moody, David Payne, Bevan Laming and Jason Coyle, who has a three quarter brother to Musket that they have a huge opinion of.

Emerald Thoroughbreds stretches over 225 acres and there is also another property at Wisemans Ferry where weanlings grow out until they head to the sales. ark Gillam would be the first to admit that getting yearlings into Australia’s No. 1 sale is not an ‘overnight’ affair. Although Yashraj Breeding & Racing has been operating at Tamworth for only two years, “Raj has bred many good horses such as Carry on Cutie (AJC Champagne S-G1), Super Savings (AJC Breeders’ Plate), Oloanna (AJC Challenge S-G2) and top Kiwi stayer Heza Karma Karzi to name but a few,” Mark points out. “Raj and I spend many, many hours doing our breeding programme, putting the right mares to the right stallion: not for the sales ring, but ultimately for racing.” A current highlight is the John O’Shea trained Gujju who won a $100,000 Inglis race at Randwick in October and is being set for the Scone Guineas in May (Yashraj will sell the

Snitzel half brother [Lot 487] at Easter). “Our plan is that within four to five years people will sit up and say, ‘these Yashraj horses can really gallop’. At present we have a 93% bred to race winning strike rate and with that kind of record, we’ll get the results in the sale ring. “For a small farm we have an exceptional Easter draft, and thank Mike and Mia Thew at Crowning Stone for the great and very professional job they do for us during foaling season.” Yashraj’s other Easter entries include a filly and colt by Champion Sire Flying Spur which will be both be offered in the first session. The first (Lot 23) is a half sister to Carry on Cutie, while the other (Lot 150) is a half brother to both Olonana and Super Savings.

CRESSFIELD eading Hunter Valley nursery, Cressfield, has come a long way in the past decade. LBased on a wheat and sheep farm established

in the early 1900s, Cressfield really grabbed the bit about six years ago in the breeding caper and is now regarded as home to some of the finest broodmares in the country. Consisting of 83 hectares of irrigated pastures and highly visible fencing, Marana Park is the perfect place for your mare, weanling or yearling to be prepared or foaled down. “Our target is to have 25 select blue hen mares with the intention of sending around 15 and 10 yearlings to Easter and Magic Millions respectively,” Cressfield principal, Wayne Bedggood points out. “We’re always on the look out for top shelf mares and it’s a work in progress.” Well, it’s working well for Cressfield with the farm selling Silver Slipper-G2 winner and 2011 Golden Slipper contender, Satin Shoes, for $700,000 at Easter last year.

Cressfield also sold 2009 AJC Champagne Stakes-G1 winner Onemorenomore from the Easter draft, hence its enviable – and current – reputation for producing quality, precocious youngsters. This time around Cressfield will offer just four at Easter but add new dimension to the term ‘quality over quantity’. For starters, they will sell three by Redoute’s Choice and one by Exceed And Excel kicking off with a colt (Lot 184), a colt from Zabeel’s Champion mare, Champagne, who is already the dam of six winners (from six to race) including stakes winners Nadege and Martique. There is also the first foal of Group winner Miss Judgement (Lot 355), the first foal of blue blooded European filly Park Esteem (Lot 393) and the second foal of outstandingly bred stakes winning 2YO, Personify (Lot 401). Based on Cressfield’s growing success, this is one quartet that could really sing.

QTIS 600 PREVIEW

FAVOURABLE DELAY There is absolutely no pun intended, but the old saying ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ can certainly apply to the 2011 QTIS 600 Yearling Sale. Amidst the devastation of the Queensland floods in January, the state’s breeding chieftains made the conscious decision to put the QTIS 600 back a month – to 17-18 April – to allow affected vendors the opportunity to catch their breath.

A G I C MILLIONS’ then managing d i re c t o r , Stephen Silk, announced at the time: “the decision was made in respect of what has occurred in flood ravaged Queensland to give people, both vendors and buyers, time to get back on their feet.” It was a wise move given the impact that the powerful QTIS

scheme has on Queensland’s thoroughbred economy with over $15 million in bonuses available for graduates. As a byproduct of the decision though, the catalogued yearlings – 545 of them – have had another four weeks to ‘grow out’ and, according to a number of trainers who have visited farms in the lead up to QTIS 600, the postponement is going to make a huge difference come sale days.

A bit of good luck for a change! Certainly on paper, the Queensland breeders – and Magic Millions – have done a terrific job in assembling this lineup which includes a potential sale topper in the shape of Lot 298, a Ferocity half brother to seven winners including Golden Slipper winner Prowl and the Group Two winner I Rock My World. The colt may get some opposition though from a filly late on the first day (Lot 264) who is by the Danehill stallion, Bullmore from the Group One placed Live It Up, whose four winners include last year’s MRC Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes-G1 winner Response and the dam of 2010 Group Two winner Returntosender. >>

Yet another set to shine is the first living foal of winning Secret Savings mare, Secret Cache, a half sister to QTC Sires’ Produce-G1 winner Star Shiraz. Both the yearling and Star Shiraz are by the hugely prolific Lyndhurst Stud based stallion Sequalo (16 stakes winners). Not surprisingly, Sequalo is well represented at QTIS 600 with 38 yearlings, a figure equalled by his Danehill stablemate, Hidden Dragon, whose career has gotten off to a flash start with the likes of last spring’s Group Two winner Hollowlea. However, it’s Glenlogan Park’s Flying Spur stallion Jet Spur who has weighed in with the most entries (41) including several siblings to stakes winners and sons and daughters of stakes winners. Other Queensland staples with sizeable representation include Bradbury’s Luck (21 entries), Falvelon (23), Ferocity (19), Freeze (13), Minardi (12), Monashee Mountain (13), Nothing To Lose (11), Outback Prince (19), Stromberg Carlson (18) and, of course, the omnipresent Show a Heart (sire of Group One winners Heart of Dreams and Toorak Toff) who has 28 with which to draw the crowds. 22

ACCORDING TO A NUMBER OF TRAINERS WHO HAVE VISITED QUEENSLAND FARMS IN THE LEAD UP TO QTIS 600,THE POSTPONEMENT IS GOING TO MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE COME SALE DAYS.

But it’s the high flying status of Queensland’s first season sires All Bar One (27), Chateau Istana (11), Hotel Grand (11), Outback Prince (19) and early front runner Red Dazzler (27) that could easily provide 2011 QTIS 600’s greatest attraction. Their emergence on the national charts should also piggyback Wattle Brae Stud’s Court Command into the limelight who has 19 of his first crop featured. There is no hotter sire in Australia at the moment that Court Command’s sire Commands and Court Command has been one of his better reps, taking out the AJC Stan Fox Stakes-G2 and three other Group events, along with a third behind Wonderful World in the MRC Caulfield Guineas-G1. Just two of his yearlings in QTIS 600 are Lot 99, a colt from Chilean Champion 3YO Filly, Crystal Clear and Lot 70, a colt from Group Two winning 2YO, Catnipped. im and Troy Hall cover a fair amount of ground with their boutique operation at the foothills of Mount Mellum (hence the stud’s name!) in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Troy looks after the racehorses, while Kim focuses on the breeding aspects of the farm: “we like to keep the two as separate entities,” Kim explains. “Troy reckons there is a stigma attached to a trainer selling his nice horses … thinking there must be something wrong with them! “Maybe one day I’ll be able to keep the best of the horses I breed, but no yet,” Troy says with a grin. “I started with a couple of mares as a hobby about five years ago and last spring we foaled down seven. There’s a reason we keep it

‘small’: I like to be 100% hands on. “We sell mainly at the QTIS 600 and Magic Millions Horses in Training sales and Mellum Park offers prep for both yearlings and breeze up horses, along with foaling down, weaning and early education.” Mellum Park will present two on the first day at QTIS 600: a Dane Shadow colt (Lot 98) and Falvelon filly (Lot 113). “I’m really excited about both youngsters … Dane Shadow is flying at the moment with three stakes horses during the Sydney autumn carnival (Red Tracer, Shadow Minister and Bright Heart), while the Falvelon is a half sister to Danish Whiskey that we sold to Liam Birchley last year and is already city placed at two.”

011 represents the first year that Noble Bend has prepared yearlings under its own shingle, but don’t get the impression that they’re a bunch of Johnny-come-latelys. In fact, principal Nicole Williams has been actively involved in the thoroughbred industry for over a decade and preparing yearlings for others for the past five years. Based at Laravale in Queensland (but moving to Toowoomba in the next 12 months), Noble Bend offers the total range of services for their clients: walk ins, foaling down, spelling … at very competitive rates. “We have some great clients and treat their horses as individuals, only paddocking horses together owned by the same clients.” But you can also sense that Noble Bend is excited about the QTIS 600 on 17-18 April: “We purchased

he Inglis Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale sure has a tough act to follow. Its 17-18 April dateline comes less than a week after the Easter Yearling and Broodmare sales in Sydney, between them realising some $120 million in trade (give or take a mill).

UTUMN, BY comparison, should weigh in with around $4 million for the 441 yearlings it has on offer (including supplementary lots). However, Autumn is not to be sniffed at … far from it. The sale fills a niche – especially for those who can’t ante up the $220,000 (on average) to shop at Easter. What’s more, Autumn can boast a reputation that far exceeds its perceived value. Maybe it’s the extra couple of weeks allowing yearlings to grow out more, or maybe, just maybe, some yearlings don’t need a lot of black type in their pedigrees to make them run fast. Pompeii Ruler’s a good example: offered at the 2004 Autumn, the Mick Price trained son of Genuine went on to win over $2.1 million in stakes from victories in the Australian Cup-G1 and Queen Elizabeth-G1.

INNERS Group One winner Grand Journey (sold for $6,500 in 2006) is another, Flemington stakes winner Status Symbol (sold for $2,000 in 2007) yet another. Then there’s 2YO stakes winners Broadway Harmony and She’s Got Gears (sold for $18,000 and $45,000 respectively in 2009) another Flemington stakes winner in Secret Flyer (turning $29,000 into $423,948) and last year’s graduate Grand Britannia who has twice been stakes placed this season. And it’s not as if we’re delving into the dim dark past for results! The trick is to pick which of the 441 entered for this year can join them. The 2011 catalogue includes yearlings by proven sires such as Bel Esprit, Bianconi, Choisir, Commands, Hussonet, Lonhro, Red Ransom, Reset and Rock Of Gibraltar, while no less than 22 first season sires will have progeny strut their stuff. A lot of note will also be taken of the sires with their

second round of progeny going through the ring such as Churchill Downs, Artie Schiller, Nadeem (who chimed in with his first stakes winner on the Australian Cup program with Triple Asset) and leading First Season Sire Written Tycoon who has six up for grabs.

Entries hadn’t closed off as this edition went to bed, but the supps included a Fastnet Rock according to Heagney.

Inglis also took the bold step of extending entries for Autumn and having a supplementary section.

It will be interesting to see if Autumn posts further gains after scoring a 23% rise in average (and 18% increase in gross) last year … one of the very few 2010 sales to gain on ’09.

“Following interest from a number of breeders, we saw merit in opening the Autumn Yearling Sale to include a supplementary catalogue,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney said. “Our duty is to provide a platform for breeders to sell their yearlings and as this will be the last dedicated yearling sale in Victoria for the season, we thought it appropriate to give breeders the opportunity to sell yearlings which may have incurred a minor setback when preparing for the Premier Sale or yearlings which at closing time of entries were not going to be sold but vendors now wish to sell.”

The supplementary yearlings will be sold at the conclusion of the second day’s selling on April 18.

BURNEWANG NORTH PASTORAL

urnewang North is clearly one of the rising stars of the Victorian thoroughbred industry and has made huge in-roads in a relatively short time. And those in-roads became a highway at the 2011 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale with an average of $132,500 for six lots sold including the sale topping Fastnet Rock colt ($340,000), a God’s Own colt for $160,000 and a Magnus for $130,000.

Among the seven is a Rock of Gibraltar colt (Lot 104) from a dual winning half sister to Wonderful World, a full sister (by King of Roses) to Group winner Oval Affair (Lot 130) and a colt by Haradasun (Lot 303), the first foal of a winning daughter of brilliant racemare and dual Group One winner Republic Lass. BOMBORA DOWNS

hristoph Bruechert runs a VERY good shop and that the fact that his stud is based in one of the most picturesque areas of Victoria only enhances the professionalism and services available at Bombora Downs. Purchased 11 years ago (and commencing operations in a modest fashion two and a half years later), Bombora Downs now encompasses some 300 acres, with the leasing of several properties and the purchase of a neighbouring farm some 18 months (which is now completely equi mesh fenced and 4000 trees planted). According to Christoph, Bombora Downs is now the only stud left on the Peninsula and, consequently, is called upon by local breeders to provide walk ins, sales prep, foaling down, weaning and agistment … and for rearing

The new Dick Francis? Irish-based horseracing journalist, Lissa Oliver, is known locally for her literary contributions to Racetrack magazine, the GavelHouse website and, more recently, Track To Track. In Europe, her features appear in International Thoroughbred, European Trainer, The Irish Field and the daily European Bloodstock News. And, as a serving member of the Kildare Committee of the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, she writes many of their educational booklets. In both 2008 and 2009 Lissa was nominated for the UK’s prestigious Clive Graham Horserace Journalist of the Year at the annual Derby Awards in London and, was award a special commendation for having again been nominated in 2010. But Lissa is also a published novelist with a rapidly growing popularity in Europe that is poised to go global with books such as Gala Day, Nero: The Last Caesar and the recently released Chantilly Dawns.

The top European horses tend to run every four to six weeks and at their specialised distance, while here was a horse running every other day, it seemed, winning sprints as easily as Cup races! He was a phenomenon. So I started to subscribe to Turf Monthly. I must have written quite impassioned letters, because Turf Monthly published them! They introduced me to some Australian racing pen pals, including my best mate to this day, Maggie Creighton. Maggie taught me so much about your racing and the heroes of the past.”

o writing letters turned into …?

“I never realised writing could ever be anything but a hobby. I left school and I could no longer afford to go racing. I tried to work in the stud industry, but that was the early 1980s when girls were just not given the opportunities. Following a stud management course I switched tack completely and worked in the theatre for a year, but racing was my first love and I began working for Ladbrokes, the betting office chain. It was the closest I ever thought I’d get to racing. I spent my lunch breaks in the back office, writing a racing novel.”

et, you ended up in Ireland?

“I married in 1986 and we sold up and moved to Kildare in Ireland (not far from the Curragh racecourse).

“I became focused on writing as an author, rather than as a hobby. The move to Ireland couldn’t have been better for us. I even have my own exracehorse out in the garden! Every dream came true, but it wasn’t overnight. If you have a passion for something, always stay focused, always work towards it, and eventually it will happen for you. You have to make it happen.”

I visit studs and racing yards. That’s not work! And every good article leads to new magazines and more work, so I’m truly blessed.

The NAME GAME One of the toughest roles racehorse owners face – apart from paying feed and training bills – is the naming of their neddy.

FTER ALL, MOST of us don’t want to be associated with sobriquets better suited to a cart horse: I mean do you really want to be standing on the podium at headquarters as the Chairman congratulates you on the fine victory of your mighty galloper, Radish? Trouble is, a lot of the good names are already long gone. And don’t even waste your ink by trying to hitch your wagon to a famous horse. I guarantee you that Phar Lap Mark II won’t be an option … not in this lifetime anyway. You even run into trouble with horses that might not have >> www.tracktotrack.com

been able to run out of sight on a dark night. For instance, NO name can be repeated for 17 years – yes, 17 years – after the birth of a horse with the exact same name or for 20 years after the year of birth of the youngest named produce of a horse with the same name.

Tulsami (reverse the spelling), Wooden Swallow (renamed Weekend Flight) and the American racehorse, Hoof Hearted, spring to mind, as does the Dr Geoff Chapman trained Merkin who managed to win the 1983 Silver Slipper before it was revealed she was named after a ‘pubic wig’.

For example, the name, Radish, won’t be available until 2014 due to an unraced 1997 model by Ideal Planet. That said, there have been six Radishs overall according to Bloodhound – three foaled in Great Britain (starting with a 1787 filly by Potoooooooo), a maiden winner from New Zealand [1972] and one from Ireland [2001], who also only won the solitary race.

Merkin was subsequently re-named, Giostra: which is Italian for carousel. And yes, she certainly had the establishment in a spin when they uncovered Dr Chapman’s mischievous act.

Bottom line: nothing suggestive, scandalous, vulgar, obscene, in poor taste, nor names which are designed to harass, humiliate or disparage individuals, religious, political or ethnic groups … and definitely nothing that has the potential to create controversy under current social standards. And you can forget swear words in other languages (yes, we’re talking to you Smarty Pants). What else? Ah yes, you are limited to 18 characters including spaces and apostrophes, which kind of throws out: IvespentmylastdollaronthisbloodyhorsesoIhopeitcanrun, along with pretty much anything named after Welsh townships. Names made up entirely of numbers will get the flick too, i.e. One, Two or Seventy Eight, as will single letters and abbreviations such as FBI (we assume they don’t mean the Freedman Brothers), UFO or XRAY.

Therefore, the Moe Fish and Chip Shop will have to rely on other means of marketing and call their horse something else. You also can’t go for Mounting Yard, Finishing Post, Trifecta, Melbourne Cup, Golden Slipper et al, and the Registrar’s definition – “the potential to cause confusion for racing administration and racegoers” – is clearly a tough one to interpret. As previously established, Sally Sells Seashells by the Seashore fails the criteria on so many counts, but spare a thought for the Yank racecaller faced with broadcasting a straight long duel at Monmouth between Mywifenosevrything and Thewifedoesntknow. Look the race up on YouTube … outstanding! Still, I would have to say my favourite ‘restriction’ relates to persons living or dead and the good Registrar has provided some examples … Marilyn Monroe (dead for 50 years), Chopper Reid (I’m tipping they mean Mark ‘Chopper’ Read), Fatty Arbuckle (a long forgotten comedian who stepped off this mortal coil in 1933) and Harold Holt, who went missing at Portsea in 1967. I must confess to being a bit intrigued as to why the good folk of Malvern can name

the Harold Holt Memorial Swimming Pool after someone who drowned, yet we can’t name a horse after our 17th Prime Minister. Fortunately, the Registrar will give consideration to the ‘use of names of ancient historical figures, eg. TUTANKHAMUN’. Unless of course his mummy complains … Now, let’s look at the rationale behind some of racing’s niftily named neddies. >>

From BLACK CAVIAR to GREEN MONKEYS W

here to start?

Where better than with racing superstar, Black Caviar, whose name is on everyone’s lips … and, we suppose, on quite a few chins. The owners’ inference is not hard to work out: the mare is close enough to black and we’d all like to be wealthy enough to scoff caviar. Part owner Gary Wilkie reveals that fellow owner, Pam Hawkes, came up with the name, while his daughter Shannon devised the fastbecoming-famous ‘salmon and black’ colours. But why Caviar why not Truffle or other delicacy?

According to Gary it relates to Black Caviar’s granddam, Scandinavia who is named after the northern European region and is evidently popular for caviar … although not quite as expensive Almas Caviar which hails from Iran and comes in a 24-karat gold tin for the princely sum of $25,000.

That said, the Scandinavian variety is not so shabby and is known as Caviar de Lysekil, after the Swedish coastal town of Lysekil. According to Google maps, Lysekil is about a five hour drive from Helsinge, via Ängelholmsvägen, Hälsovägen, Drottninggatan, Järnvägsgatan and Malmöleden (and don’t forget to go through Knutpunkten). Why are we going to Helsinge? Well, it’s the Danish township that gave its name to Black Caviar’s dam and thus pays due homage to the Scandinavia theme. Unfortunately, Helsinge (the place) was – some years ago – elected by national television as the ugliest town in Denmark … still, the name has a nicer ring to it than that of Like Billy Oh, which was horse Helsinge’s original catchcall. Peter Ford, bloodstock advisor to Black Caviar’s breeder and Helsinge’s owner Rick Jamieson, recently explained to the Age’s Andrew Garvey that the manager of Jamieson’s Gilgai Farm devised Like Billy Oh, when the then unnamed three year old filly arrived at the stud after being purchased by Ford from the supplementary section of the 2005 Easter Broodmare Sale.

SPECIAL FEATURE Ford, also known as the Eminent Euroan, showed that patience is a virtue by sticking around for the supps and then going to $115,000 to secure the filly. Self effacingly, Ford is happy enough to point out it was Jamieson who decided to send the re-badged Helsinge to Bel Esprit instead of carting her north for ‘richer’ pickings … a fact that Jamieson was quick to remind Ford of when Black Caviar bolted in by five lengths on debut. Jamieson undoubtedly poured some more lemon on Ford’s papercut when Black Caviar’s baby brother, Moshe (also by Bel Esprit), won his first two starts in convincing fashion. Moshe is one of the rare diversions from the Scandinavia leitmotif and owes his name to the father of one of the owners and its loose translation from Hebrew is ‘strong warrior’. Moshe Dayan was also the famous Israeli leader who rose to prominence in the late 60s when heading up his country’s defence during the 6-day war. For those of you who haven’t been to temple lately or slept through your history classes, he was the bald bloke with the eye patch. Anyway, back to Scandinavia and the rest of her brood: her son Magnus was the leading sprinting entire of his generation (AJC The Galaxy-G1 and VRC Age Classic-G2) and now stands

alongside Black Caviar’s sire, Bel Esprit at Eliza Park in Victoria, while another of her sons – the Group Two winning sprinter Wilander – is domiciled at Lindsay Park in South Australia. A third son is the 5-time winning sprinter Ibsen. Firstly, Magnus is Latin for ‘great’ but is also the name used for the first seven kings of Norway and the first four kings of Sweden (and just to confuse the issue, King Magnus IV of Sweden was also King Magnus VII of Norway!).

And Scandinavia herself? A Group Two winner and four times Group One placed, the blue hen mare is out of Song of Norway, in turn a daughter of Danish born mare, Love Song, who was brought to Australia in 1980 by David Hains of Kingston Town fame.

Nijinsky was a racing and breeding phenomenon, much like his sire – the legendary Northern Dancer – but with dynastic achievements in his own right. Black Caviar’s sireline has its share of creativity too. Dual Group One winner and Champion Victorian Sire, Bel Esprit, was a $9,000 yearling but it didn’t stop his owners determining his rather austere designation … which

is French for ‘fine mind’ or, in other words, a cultivated, highly intelligent person. Such intelligence is clearly a winner with the ladies given that Bel Esprit has covered 1386 mares in eight seasons at stud, with a record high of 266 in 2007. His sire, Royal Academy, was clearly no slouch in the breeding shed either with 2243 named foals, of which 155 were stakes winners (at a highly impressive strike rate of 8.4%) and 20 were Group One winners. Black Caviar’s grandsire was named after the Royal Academy of Arts which is one of the most famous institutions in England and was established in 1768 by King George III. Trained by Vincent O’Brien and winner of the 1990 July Cup, Royal Academy also won the Breeders’ Cup Mile with famous hoop Lester Piggott coming out of retirement to ride him at Belmont Park. Speaking of retirement, Royal Academy’s sire (Nijinsky) and dam (Crimson Saint) were no spring chickens by the time the artful Royal Academy was foaled in 1987. Indeed, Nijinsky was 20 and Crimson Saint was 18, which kind of pours cold water on the theory of those pedants who claim that old stallions AND old mares should never a twain meet.

At stud Crimson Saint would produce seven winners from seven to race including the 3-time Group Two winner Terlingua (the dam of world champion sire Storm Cat), although the acorn fell a fair way from the tree when her colt Laa Etaab (a full brother to Royal Academy) was sold for $7 million at Keeneland in 1985, but failed to make it to the racetrack. Meanwhile, his equine namesake died in 1992 at the age of 25 – ironically from laminitis – but not before he had left some 155 stakes winners including a number of champions. And what a racehorse: the first horse in 35 years to win the English Triple Crown (2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby,

Irish Derby) and then the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II and St Leger. A truly remarkable racehorse. Coincidentally, Nijinsky won his first 11 starts, before finishing his career with seconds in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and Champion Stakes. The 11 straight is a feat that his great granddaughter is seeking to emulate in William Reid Stakes-G1 just as this magazine was going to press. Nijinsky’s other ‘record’ however, is not nearly as flattering given that he is the sire of Seattle Dancer who was knocked down for $13.1 million at Keeneland in 1985 – the most expensive yearling ever sold. Turns out Seattle Dancer wasn’t much of a racehorse though, winning a couple of moderate races before being whisked off to stud. Not the worst stallion you’ve ever seen (34 stakes winners including NZ bred, Aussie Group One winner Dance the Day Away), poor old Seattle Dancer stood in Kentucky, then Ireland, then Japan and, eventually, five years in Germany where he died in 2007. (Seattle Dancer certainly fared better than Snaafi Dancer who was sold for a then record of $10.2 million at Keeneland in 1983, only to never reach the racetrack. Sending him straight off to stud, the horse had fertility problems and in two years only sired four foals. Ouch!). Still, both pale in comparison to The Green Monkey who

Imagine then the dismay of owners when the horse earned just $10,440 on the racetrack from his three starts – the best of them a third. Perhaps he’ll fare better at stud with his first crop now yearlings. Great name though: The Green Monkey is by Forestry (a Storm Cat stallion) and is named after a golf course in Barbados famous for its, you guessed it … green monkeys. What’s more, the horse was foaled in the Chinese year of the Green/Wooden Monkey. Just goes to show though that whether it’s slow horse, fast horse, good name, bad name, horses can make monkeys of us all!

ROSS RIVER

OVER RECENT YEARS, there have been numerous reports of a viral-like disease with an initial high temperature, joint pain and lameness, swelling in the lower limbs, loss of appetite and depression which develops into a chronic fatigue-like condition which can last for weeks or months. Affected horses are unable to exercise to their previous level and become ‘ﬂat’ and tire easily when worked. Many of these horses appear to be infected during the summer months and are often located in areas with fresh water lakes and seaside lagoons or during a wet summer rainfall season. Some properties report recurring symptoms in horses each year, with many owners and trainers suspecting a virus being harboured in the soil from year to year.

IT IS NOW KNOWN, following surveys and blood testing for immune antibodies, that these symptoms which resemble the chronic fatigue of Ross River Virus in humans, are due to the same virus, with many horses when they exhibit the above chronic fatigue-like signs, returning a positive antibody titre to the virus.

What is Ross River Virus? Ross River Virus (RRV) is an arthropod (insect) borne virus (arbovirus) which can cause a number of neurological, musculoskeletal, behavioural and respiratory problems in horses. RRV was first identified in Narrandera and Hay in humans in 1928 and today is reported throughout most of Australia, Papua New Guinea and many islands in the South Pacific. It is a non-lethal disease, however infection can be quite debilitating and symptoms long lasting. In humans, 90% of cases report joint pain and arthritis and 50% develop chronic fatigue syndrome. Because of its effects, infection of RRV in racing and performance horses can result

in great economic loss, while in equestrian and pleasure horses, the often long lasting chronic fatigue-like symptoms are equally frustrating to horse owners. As well as affecting horses, infection can occur in humans, dogs, cats, marsupials and rodents, with kangaroos and wallabies being the most common carriers. Kangaroos, wallabies, and humans, as well as possums, ﬂying foxes and birds, can act as natural reservoirs from season to season. It cannot be transmitted directly between them, but instead, RRV is transmitted by female mosquitoes biting the infected host and then inoculating the disease into another human or animal.

How is it spread? RRV is transmitted by several species of mosquitoes. These vector species (insects capable of transmitting a disease) vary with seasonal and environmental conditions in different regions of Australia. The most common RRV vectors in Australia include Culex annulirostris (inland mosquito,breeds in fresh water habitats particularly in irrigated areas), Ades camptorhynchus (southern coastal Saltmarsh mosquito) and Ades vigilac (northern coastal Saltmarsh mosquito). In Australia, RRV outbreaks mostly occur between September and May, peaking during January to March when mosquito populations are the greatest.

Did You Know That… If you are situated in an area with a high risk of RRV transmission, it is important to take measures to reduce exposure to yourself and children. Mosquitoes are most common in the early evening and overnight during the warm summer months, so ensure that you are covered and apply an insect repellent when outdoors and when sleeping. Flywire screens are also recommended on bedrooms and a mosquito net that covers the bed area at night. HANDY HINT 1 Early Signs of RRV Infection The earliest sign is a rise in body temperature above 39 degrees for 4-5 days whilst the virus multiplies in the blood and body cells. The horse often becomes depressed with a reduced ability to exercise and a loss of appetite. After the first week following infection, fluctuations with intermittently high temperatures and recurrent bouts of fever and lassitude are often observed, which distinguishes RRV from the more common EHV-1 ‘stable’ virus respiratory infection. Many horses develop soft, cold fluid swellings in the lower limbs and occasionally under the stomach and throat. Some develop swollen and painful lymph nodes under the jaw. After the first 7-10 days following initial infection, other signs including joint swelling and tenderness, with stiffness in movement, reluctance to move and sore muscles are usually noted and some horses appear to be ‘tied up’ in the muscles during exercise, rather than after exercise. Blood tests fail to indicate an elevation in muscle cell enzymes normally associated with the ‘tying up’ syndrome.

What climatic conditions favour infection? The prevalence of RRV has been found to be highly associated with climatic conditions, with rainfall being the most important factor. Areas where RRV outbreaks have occurred have most commonly had high rainfall in the months leading up to the outbreak. Temperature and humidity have been found to be more variable, with outbreaks occurring in both tropical and temperate climates where temperatures range from as low as 6.4°C and as high as 40°C. While high rainfall creates optimum environment for mosquito breeding, the wide range of temperatures recorded during RRV outbreaks

can be somewhat misleading. The optimum temperature for mosquitoes to breed is between 25°C -27°C. Although RRV outbreaks have been associated within temperatures and humidity over a broad range, mosquitoes tend to migrate to damp, warm conditions, such as around dams, rivers, tanks and drains where conditions are favourable for breeding. Diagnosis During the active acute phase of RRV, the horse’s primary response to infection is the production of IgM antibodies, which occurs within 7-9 days post infection. IgM antibodies continue to rise until 2-3 weeks before rapidly declining. As IgM

They hatch to ‘wrigglers’ in water after rainfall and the new mosquito can already be infected without taking the virus with a blood meal to breed.

HANDY HINT 2 Blood Antibody Screening The presence and level of IgM antibodies either alone or in combination with IgG in a blood test, can provide an indication of time of infection, while the identiﬁcation of IgG antibodies alone is frequently used as an indicator of prior infection with RRV. If a horse has been suffering from RRV in its early stages, it is best to take 2 blood samples 2 weeks apart, to assist with the detection of RRV, also to help to precisely identify the time of infection and will often coincide with the start of symptoms, associated with a high population of mosquitoes 2-3 weeks after summer rainfall.

antibodies begin to decline, IgG rises and overrides IgM making it the dominant antibody. Testing for IgM and IgG antibodies in the blood is the only way to diagnose a horse with RRV. The IgG antibody can be identiﬁed in the blood samples of affected horses for up to 18 months.

HANDY HINT 3 Manage Turn-out Times to Minimise Mosquitoes It is helpful to restrict turnout times to mid morningmid afternoon and lock your horse up in the late afternoon prior to the sunset period, the early evening and after dark when mosquito activity is high to reduce the chance of being bitten by a RRV carrying mosquito. If it is your own property, you can install ﬁne ﬂyscreen covers around stable areas to reduce the chance of mosquitoes gaining access to your horses when they are stabled during these high risk periods. It is also a good idea to block off all other openings around the stable block, including the edges of sliding doors. It is also helpful to install an electric mosquito ‘zapper’ on the walls of the stable aisle or veranda to help control mosquito numbers. A mosquito trap containing an attractant chemical is also recommended to be installed near to the stables to attract them away from the body heat of horses.

Prevention To assist with the prevention of RRV infection in horses, it is important to adopt stringent mosquito control measures particularly after rain when the conditions are favourable for mosquito breeding. Mosquitoes are more active in the morning and evening so it is important to ensure that your horse is well covered, with properly ﬁtting rugs from head to tail during these times. Some mosquitoes can bite through thin cotton rugs, so that it is best to provide

a thicker cotton sheet with neck rug and hood with ear pieces to help provide more complete protection over common target areas for female mosquitoes. A mesh ﬂy veil with ear covers can be used in the evening as an alternative to a hood. When considering an agistment property or stable/yard housing for your horse, try to keep away from areas known to be populated with mosquitoes and natural hosts, such as kangaroos and wallabies. Heavily populated areas include coastal areas and wetlands with higher humidity where conditions favour mosquito breeding. Properties with stable blocks or yards away from any wetlands or damp and steamy areas are less likely to be a high risk location but mosquitoes can ﬂy to areas neighbouring wetlands.

Viral Transmission / Virology As RRV is an arbovirus which is transmitted between susceptible host species by mosquitoes. The process of transmission RRV occurs in the following way:

Other Therapies due to formation of Heinz body particles in red blood cells which signiﬁcantly reduces their lifespan in the blood. It has also been suggested that mosquitoes are attracted to horses consuming sweet feeds and molasses in the diet, whilst other observations suggest that adding apple cider vinegar (5075 mL in the evening feed) in place of molasses, may help minimise attraction by mosquitoes. However, none of these measures are totally protective. Citronella, lavender, rosemary and lemongrass are all thought to be natural mosquito repellents. A natural repellent spray believed to keep biting insects away can be made from combining the oils of citronella, lavender, parafﬁn and eucalyptus with distilled water.

Controlling Mosquitoes The use of tested and approved insect repellents are more protective against mosquitoes for an extended time (Refer to Handy Hint 5). Although kangaroos and wallabies are the natural host animal for RRV, it is a waste of time fencing the perimeter of a property to control access to paddocks as infected mosquitoes can ﬂy from nearby bushy, wetland areas where wallabies colonise. Moving to an area free of kangaroos and wallabies and high populations of mosquitoes may be a last resort if RRV becomes a seasonal problem on a horse property.

Flygon is based on natural pyrethrins and citronella oil which results in a low irritant, 24-36 hour long lasting repellent action. Many alcohol based repellents only last for 2-3 hours before evaporating and losing their activity, whilst Flygon® maintains its repellent activity for up to 24 hours between applications.

eradicate the virus from the horse’s body. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents, including corticosteroids, can be of benefit to help make the horse more comfortable, but they cannot actually destroy the virus. Treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s), such as ‘bute’ and Finadyne® can be given to relieve symptoms of pain and swellings. The horse should be rested and stress should be limited, as this can cause a relapse in severity and symptoms of the disease. Most affected horses make a full recovery within 18 months. Usually, by this time, permanent immunity will develop so that the horse cannot be reinfected with the virus throughout the rest of its life.

HANDY HINT 6 Supplement with Immune Nutrients It may be of beneﬁt to give a daily supplement of Kohnke’s Own Activ-8 containing immune active nutrients, such as organic zinc, organic selenium and high doses of vitamin A and Vitamin E, as well as other supportive nutrient co-factors, to help correct low or inadequate intake from pasture or hard feeds to help maintain the immune response in horses with early symptoms. A daily supplement of Activ-8 given for 3 weeks may help maintain optimum immune activity during the critical ﬁrst 3 weeks of immune challenge to the RRV virus in the blood and tissues. Field trials indicate that Activ-8 can help maintain the appetite and general well-being in horses with suspected RRV infection and antibody titre to the virus. It is important that horses maintain their appetite during the incubation stage of the disease.

ONE FOR THE AGES

hen I started working as a copyboy on the now defunct Sun newspaper back in 1973 (and subsequently dragooned into the racing department), the horse of the day was the mighty grey, Gunsynd.

After all, I still get goose bumps from the memory of Sunline edging out Shogun Lodge in the 2002 Doncaster and Lee Freedman is probably spot on to assert that we’ll never again witness the likes of Makybe Diva’s Melbourne Cup three peat.

Cox Plate winner, Epsom, Doncaster, Rawson, Toorak, Queen Elizabeth and third (carrying 60.5kgs) behind Piping Lane in the Melbourne Cup, Gunsynd’s popularity was incredible. They even wrote a song about him … the Goondiwindi Grey. Terrible song but they still sold a lot of ‘em.

However, there is an unparalleled aura about Black Caviar which is almost impossible to define.

The years since have seen a lot of ‘people’s champs’ including Manikato, Strawberry Road, Bonecrusher, Vo Rogue, Better Loosen Up, Octagonal and his son Lonhro, Might And Power, Sunline, Makybe Diva and, of course, the immortal Kingston Town. But there’s something about Black Caviar that takes her into a whole new stratosphere. I’m not saying she’s a better mare than Sunline and the memory’s not that bad to trivialize the deeds of Makybe Diva.

Sure, her unbeaten status has a lot to do with it … so does the fact that no-one out there has a clue to just how fast she can go. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll never find out. But more importantly, Black Caviar is the reason you muck out boxes, get up with the foaling alarm, keep a phone account despite backing three losing favourites in a row, and still frock up for the races on a rainy, cold Saturday afternoon. Black Caviar IS racing.

Three issues back, Track To Track profiled Australia’s leading First Crop Sires, noting that five spots in the top 10 had been booked by Queensland-based sires. Well, as we move to the business end of the season, there’s been a fair shuffle with Victorian stallion Written Tycoon moving to the top of the chart and a much more even ‘spread’ of state representation.

The proliferation of rich events attached to state bonus schemes has clearly assisted some of the first croppers, but at the time of writing, there appeared to only one them with a real chance of getting a huge bump between now and the Queensland winter carnival. This time last year Stratum wasn’t breaking any world records but grabbed an unassailable lead when

Crystal Lily took out the $3.5 million Golden Slipper and, we might add, hasn’t looked back ever since. It’s looking likely at this stage that the only 2011 Slipper contender by a first crop sire is the promising Written Tycoon colt, Masthead, albeit a fair way down in current markets. Still, courtesy of Mastead, Grahame Begg’s stakes placed Written Consent and

CROPPERS recent Doomben winner Trump, Written Tycoon has a $100k plus buffer and boasts a 5.67 average earnings index, albeit from just six runners. Given that Masthead was knocked down to the Freedman Brothers for $65,000 at last year’s Melbourne Premier (not bad off a then service fee of $8,250), the colt has repaid the faith by pulling in $328,250 from his five starts.

“We’ve always had a huge opinion of Written Tycoon, whom we syndicated once his racing career (STC Todman Slipper-G2 at two) was over,” Iskander Racing’s Suman Hedge points out. “However, he’s even exceeded our lofty aspirations and with books of 118 and 198 in his last two seasons at stud, you’ll be seeing a lot more of Written Tycoon in the years to come.” The most successful in terms of winners to runners thus

far is the Danehill stallion Saxon who has had four of his progeny salute (from 10 to race) including recent Ascot winner Valley Girl, while Hennessy horse All Bar One also has four winners … timely given that 27 of his second crop youngsters will go through the Magic Millions ring at the QTIS 600 Yearling Sale on 17-18 April. It will be certainly to see how the chart looks by the end of July!
