to put our major sales under huge pressure. The Gold Coast Magic Millions has always proven to be a barometer for other sales so we’ll all be a little wiser after the first session on Wednesday 7 January. The Magic Millions crew has certainly assembled another fantastic catalogue and our coverage commences on page 20. In the next edition we’ll also be taking a close look at the Perth Magic Millions (very interesting catalogue for next year’s sale), Tasmania and the re-badged Inglis Guineas Sale in Sydney. In the meantime, on behalf of all the team at Track To Track, I’d like to wish our loyal supporters and readers a very merry Christmas and successful new year. I’m not sure what Santa is leaving under my tree, but I’m tipping that Magic Millions will be hoping Father Christmas leaves a Patinack Mark II under its hot tin roof.

FAIRCHILD Will Fairchild snare trainer Liam Birchley a well deserved victory in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic? That’s the General idea.
M
ight have to check the archives, but we’re almost certain that a last start Toowoomba winner hasn’t scored Track To Track’s Horse of the Month before now. Nothing wrong with Toowoomba mind you. Gets a bit ‘Piccadilly’ in winter, but overall a nice place and they breed some very good horses up there.

austbrokers horseof the month “impressed with how she (Fairchild) was able to come from the back of the field and win in such good fashion”. “I expected her to be up near the lead,” Liam said. “I’m not sure why she was so slowly away. But I was really happy with how she was able to finish off after getting so far back. “The race may have done her good. She’s got to learn about dealing with traffic - and in the big Millions race you need a horse who can cope with that in a high pressure race.” Prior to Toowoomba, Fairchild had finished second on debut at Doomben and snared the runner up’s prize again at Eagle Farm a fortnight later. Preview MM winners have had more auspicious beginnings to be sure, but Fairchild clearly has plenty of ability and looks like giving trainer Birchley a two pronged attack in the Magic Millions. LIAM BIRCHLEY
Fairchild wasn’t one of them though. That distinction belongs to NSW breeder Catherine Remond, but we’ll get back to that in a tick. Fairchild gets our nod because her maiden victory in the $100,000 Magic Millions Toowoomba 2YO Plate at the end of November now has her right on target for Queensland racing’s big kahuna – the $2 million Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast on Saturday 10 January. It certainly was an impressive performance at Toowoomba by Fairchild who was having her third race start and, a little belatedly, he r first win.
Liam, attached to the power Aquanita Racing stable, also has Paprika up his sleeve (metaphorically speaking of course) who is way in contention with two wins from two starts (including a debut victory at Toowoomba by over six lengths). It’s fair to say that Birchley, who joined Aquanita as its Queensland trainer in 2002, has been the lesser light up against stablemates, Tony Vasil and Robert Smerdon, but his day in the sun might be just around the corner.
Realistically, and at least publicly, Liam probably doesn’t care which of the two salutes “It certainly was an impressive on January 10 (and could be forgiven performance at Toowoomba by for dreaming of but a Fairchild who was having her third quinellas), Fairchild victory race start and, a little belatedly, would be tremendous grist for the media her first win.” mill.
And win she did, despite a tardy start. Tardy! You’ve seen quicker departures from a public service tea room, but once this filly wound up, she got to the line in a manner that would suggest Fairchild’s destiny lay further afield than the Great Dividing Range. Fairchild’s trainer, Liam Birchley, was pretty taken by the effort, telling the media he was
Bred by the aforementioned and highly successful Catherine Remond, Fairchild was prepared for the ‘delayed’ 2008 Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale by Glenn Burrows and Joan Faras’ Willow Park Stud in Scone. Nicer folk you won’t find and they know how to turn out a horse for sale.

2YO Chestnut Filly (6 October 2006) Owners: Lakeview Stud Racing Syndicate Trainer: Liam Birchley (Eagle Farm) Bred by: Mrs C Remond, NSW SOLD: Willow Park Stud as agent – 2008 Gold Coast Magic Millions for $160,000 Race record: 3 starts, 1 win, 2 seconds – $86,000 Sire: GENERAL NEDIYM Chestnut 1994-Stud 1999, Nediym – Military Belle by Without Fear (FR) Won 13 races and $2,121,898 inc. Dam: DANCER’S JOY (NZ) Bay 1987, Danzatore (CAN) – Belle Venus by Avaray (FR) 4 wins, inc. Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic & 4 times stakes placed; dam of 11 live foals, 9 to race, 6 winners inc. Shamrock Sun (3rd WATC Lee Steere Classic-G3). Family of Asgard, Honey Belle, Chiming etc.
Their efforts with Fairchild definitely caught the eye of Lakeview Stud, a 450 acre nursery at Canungra on Queensland’s Gold Coast Hinterland, which paid $160,000 for the privilege of taking the filly home. That’s not cheap if you have work for a living, but by the sale’s lofty standard ($157,321 average in 2008), it might turn out to be a very, very astute purchase in the long run. And it would be a racing fairytale from the purists shelf given that both Fairchild’s sire and dam won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. General Nediym stoked his considerable war chest by taking out the 1997 MM, while Dancer’s Joy grabbed the 1990 chapter when defeating subsequent Blue Diamond winner Mahaasin and Rhythmic Charm (AJC Sires’ Produce-G1). Hailing from the famous Belle family – the New Zealand ‘Belles’ – Dancer’s Joy has been a moderate success at stud, producing six winners from nine to race, including the multiple stakes placed Perth sprinter Shamrock Sun and the city placed Coureuse, dam of Group One placed Tom Coureuse and stakes placed Pirouettes. General Nediym, on the other hand has had a most illustrious career and his star continues to rise, standing this season at Widden Stud at a fee of $60,500. Winning the Lightning Stakes-G1 and Newmarket Handicap-G1, General Nediym has sired over 20 stakeswinners since moving to the breeding shed, including Regimental Gal who emulated her sire in both the MM and the Lightning. But this would be the first time that two winners of the MM 2YO Classic combined to produce a winner in their own right. Yes, it is a big step from a Toowoomba Maiden at the end of November to the Gold Coast in the second week of January, but unless she’s in to reading form guides, Fairchild doesn’t know that. Wait and see.

hey reckon Don Bradman’s son couldn’t swing a willow, but occasionally the acorn doesn’t fall too far from the tree.
Probably the best example of the adroit ‘acorn’, in our neck of the woods anyway, is Gai Waterhouse, daughter of the legendary TJ Smith. Indeed, so adroit that she is arguably better than her old man at the caper. She certainly had the best teacher. But, while Mrs Waterhouse’s exploits have consumed forests in the name of newsprint, another prodigy of a training great tends to slip under the radar. Grahame Begg, despite his impeccable pedigree, is one of your quiet achievers – focused on doing the job at hand and a little less prone to shouting his exploits from the rooftop.
followed in the Thousand Guineas-G1 that year, but then a three year break before the flashy Mahaya grabbed Grahame’s next Group One in the AJC Oaks and, Fraternity snared the Spring Champion Stakes. Telesto added another pair the following autumn, while Monopolize’s victories in the 1995 & 1996 Hong Kong International Bowl-G2 also gave Begg fans plenty to cheer home. Then, in 1999 - via the classy mare Bonanova – Grahame stood tall on the dais accepting the Emirates Stakes-G1 accolades.
Just as Neville was regarded a master tradesman, with a particular flair for fillies and mares, has trod a good fourth in the Grahame similar path.
“Running a Epsom and winning the AAMI Stakes-G3 on Derby Day, All Silent was sent out a $6.50 favourite in the Emirates and didn’t disappoint.”
Grahame is the son of Neville Begg, a true gent and giant of Australian racing.
A stable foreman for Hall of Famer, Maurice McCarten, Neville eventually hung out his own shingle and goes down in the record books as trainer of a genuine turf champion in Emancipation, Golden Slipper victor Dark Eclipse and a raft of Group Ones winners – 38 in all – before heading to Hong Kong in 1990 for a relatively late sea change.
Bonanova (a full sister to Telesto and Fraternity) would go on to win six stakes races, Our Egyptian Raine won four Group races in Australia for Grahame, while Twiglet, Perfect Promise and Just Dancing were all Group Two winners. And, like Whisked and Mahaya, all are members of the female persuasion. However, it was to be nine years and two days before Grahame next tasted success at racing’s most elite level and, somewhat coincidentally, it was this year’s Emirates Stakes with All Silent.
Grahame, then in his early 30s but with an apprenticeship dating back to the day he first learned to walk, took over his dad’s Randwick stables and, through diligence and rare insight, has made a fair share of trips to the winners’ circle. Success was immediate, with his first starter winning at Randwick while Eye of the Sky got the Group One ball rolling with a Doomben Cup victory in 1990. Whisked

irongate trainerof the month Neville liked the colt though and suggested Hong Kong interests purchase the horse. Unfortunately, All Silent didn’t fancy the Hong Kong way of life and, despite 18 months away from home and scoring the racing moniker – Chiu Shan Elite – he would return to Australia without a race under his girth strap. But Neville had faith and secured ownership of All Silent, naturally placing him with No. 1 son. All Silent won his first two races in town and the Ajax at only his fifth start … the rest is history. Champagne run
Running a good fourth in the Epsom and winning the AAMI Stakes-G3 on Derby Day, All Silent was sent out a $6.50 favourite in the Emirates and didn’t disappoint.
Grahame Begg only has around 30 horses in work at any given time and that’s the way he likes it. More the hands on approach.
“Taking out the Ajax-G2 in April, All Silent has now won five from 11 and is one of those fairytale stories we like to tell our budding thoroughbred enthusiasts.”
Like his dad, Grahame’s happy to let actions do the talking. And the ‘Silent’ treatment certainly seems to work!
Bursting clear of the pack with 400m to go, All Silent notched up one of the most emphatic wins of the Melbourne Cup carnival, scoring by over three lengths. Taking out the Ajax-G2 in April, All Silent has now won five from 11 and is one of those fairytale stories we like to tell our budding thoroughbred enthusiasts. Owned, somewhat fittingly, by Neville Begg, the course of ownership in this horse has not always been smooth. A son of Belong To Me, All Silent was passed in at the 2005 Easter Yearling Sale for $280,000 … $20,000 short of reserve.

A Letter to the CEO Dear Mr Chester, I thought I’d write you this letter to explain the reason why I won’t be applying for your job anytime soon. Well, lots of reasons actually. My lack of leadership skills, vision, and an inability to balance a cheque book are just a few that spring to mind, but the primary reason is an aversion to blood pressure medication. How do you do it? A lot of us remember the B.G.A.S. (Before Gerry & Singo) days, but it was you at ground zero, weathering some very tough times when the Millions weren’t so Magic.
Even then, there was plenty of talk that Magic Millions would take a hit … that you would be benched by an international buying bench: windy about the ramifications of EI and subsequent movement of yearlings. And yes, the average and aggregate did drop, but not nearly as much as some pundits predicted.
Yet under your stewardship the company has been kicking goals from all over the park.
OK, the arrival of Marshal Patinack in Dodge City helped you dodge a bullet – to a point – but his considerable presence (both literally and metaphorically) didn’t crowd out all the top guns.
In 2004, the Gold Coast Magic Millions grossed $62 million at an average of around $110k, yet three years on, your No. 1 sale pulled over $108 million (a bump of 28 mill on the previous year) and averaged $182,191.
Although paling by comparison to the big fella’s $19 million outlay, Charles Laird, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Dean Watt and Gai Waterhouse all spent over $3 million each and a dozen more signed for a million plus.
While we’re obviously not talking Sol Trujillo bonuses, Santa was entitled to leave something under your tree for that effort.
EI concerns aside you’d be entitled to think that things this time around would be a little
But just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, we had the EI saga. At one stage it looked as if you and the vendors would be all dressed up with no place to go, yet some nifty footwork saw Magic Millions secure an Easter date for the 2008 flagship.
20
Sure, it was all a bit sacrilegious and there’s more likely to be bi-partisan consensus over Jerusalem before you get that time slot again, but necessity is definitely a strong motivator.

more settled, but along comes an economic chill that is sending shudders throughout the globe. How will it affect your sale which, given its status and timing, is seen as the barometer for all auctions? Having been working the phones and racking up frequent flyer points over the last couple of months, you’d be in a better position than most to gauge what the thoroughbred market will do. And while I can’t imagine that you’ll publically announce any reservations on how the market will bounce, you’re bound to have a trick or two up your sleeve: let’s hope it’s another multi who likes to ‘tinkle’ with thoroughbreds. One thing’s for certain, your mob has assembled a top notch catalogue: 39 Encosta de Lago yearlings, 37 by General Nediym, 35 More Than Readys, 31 each for Commands, Fastnet Rock, Testa Rossa and Flying Spur, 26 by Redoute’s Choice and 26 by Rock of Gibraltar. There’s a half sister to Group One winning 2YO and Champion Victorian Sire, Bel Esprit, full brother to Racing To Win, half brother to La Montagna, half sister to Sirmione and half brother to Theseo and, importantly, a Charge Forward half brother to 2008 Golden Slipper winner Sebring.
there), while Coolmore (48), Arrowfield (33) and Widden (33) will each have starring roles. Best part of all, Magic Millions is the form runner. Throughout the recent Melbourne Spring Carnival, the majority of Group One winners hailed from Gold Coast auctions, including Mackinnon Stakes winner Theseo, Victoria Derby victor Rebel Raider, Gallica (Thousand Guineas) and Douro Valley (Yalumba). How do I think the sale will go? Well, I run better on hope than insight, but at least you provide the ultimate ‘distraction’. Is there a finer venue than the sales complex bar on the Saturday night after you’ve spent the afternoon watching 2YOs scurry around in search of $2 million? Definitely the best way to escape the doom and gloom. Anyway David, a merry Christmas to you and yours and best of luck for the (very early) new year. Let’s hope you can bring this one home for us … again. Kindest regards, The Australian Thoroughbred Industry

Corumbene Stud ...buy yourself another SEBRING When our home-bred colt SEBRING (5 wins inc. Golden Slipper S-G1, AJC Sires’ Produce S-G1) was crowned Australia’s Champion 2YO for the 2007/08 season, Corumbene well and truly came of age as a thoroughbred nursery. Achieving this level of success has been a long and hard fought battle but the battle has now been won. A large part of this success is due to the quality of Corumbene’s broodmare band, which in recent years has produced: * TRUE JEWELS (Blue Diamond S-G1) * WAGER (G2 winner and 3 x G1 placings) * HEART RULER (The Metropolitan-G1) * STARRY WAY (Adrian Knox S-G3) and * RED LORD (STC Parramatta and Premier’s Cups-LR, 3d South Aust. Derby-G1) At the 2009 Magic Millions Sale at the Gold Coast, Corumbene will be offering 12 highly credentialed yearlings. The highlight of our draft is SEBRING’s half-brother by the exciting young sire CHARGE FORWARD - this colt is a must see on your inspection list! I sincerely hope that I can look forward to the pleasure of parading all our yearlings for you at the 2009 sale.

KING DE LAGO Catch a rising star
E
very season the first crop sires table attracts wide interest and, invariably challenges the dictum of the more you pay the more you get.
For the past eight years the top 10 on the first crop chart has included at least one or more sires standing at less than $10,000 and, as long as mother nature plays her hand, it’s reasonable to expect that will continue. King de Lago is one stallion that seems to have been off the early radar: perhaps his unraced status is the reason he has not been front and centre, but many are discovering his ‘off track’
32
www.tracktotrack.com
kdlstallion profile
credentials more than compensate for him not featuring in your race book. King de Lago was the highest priced colt by Encosta de Lago at the 2003 Gold Coast Magic Millions and Lee Freedman openly declared him the best yearling at the sale. His sire needs no introduction to breeders, while his dam sire Rancher, was undefeated Australasian 2YO Champion and an influential sire in his own right. Darn good pedigree too with his half brother Ventura a Group winner and other close relations including stakeswinners Stater, Deposition, Accuse, Ball Park, Danabaa etc. Probably the biggest selling point for King de Lago though is his looks. A 16.2hh equine Adonis, it’s a trait he appears to be passing on to progeny. Sadly, a rather freakish paddock injury ended his 2YO preparation and Freedman still shakes his head in despair at the lost opportunity. King de Lago’s injury though was the trigger for current owners Gary and Chrissie Ashmore to ply their skills and give him a second shot at fame: “We had the utmost faith in him as a stud prospect but knew the odds were well and truly against us,” says Gary. “Regardless of pedigree, unraced stallions are a tough sell and breeders naturally make decisions that reduce their risk. Our job was to make breeders aware of King de Lago and to recognise that race record is just one of many boxes to tick when selecting a stallion. “The question I get asked most often is whether he is getting good mares and we are confident he has been given every chance in that area. With well over 200 mares in his first four seasons he has covered books many group winning sires would be proud to have.”
Some of his first crop mares include the multiple winner Efficiency, dam of 2yo Tommy Smith; Slipper winner Master Archie; city winner Fantasies, daughter of the stakeswinning mare Just Fantastic, a half sister to Just Jugah; the stakeswinning At Talaq mare, Talaq Toff (10 wins and $167,000) and two city winners from 2 runners; Nothing Daunted, the dam of stakeswinner Alacqua; and Kidada, dam of five winners including multiple stakeswinner Oceano. Just to name a few. Perhaps one of King de Lago’s best first crop examples is a 2yo filly currently with the David Hayes stable. The powerful chestnut is the grand daughter of Group Two winner San Pauli Girl from a well performed family which boasts the 2008 Doncaster Handicap winner Triple Honour. “It’s encouraging that we have such a high number of stakes performed and stakes related mares, but the high percentage of re-mates by breeders who are impressed with his progeny is proof enough that his best is yet to come,” Gary adds. Ashmore’s comments are supported by industry heavyweights such as Simon Vivian (“I’ve inspected a number of yearlings by King de Lago and found them to be well grown, balanced and athletic individuals), John McArdle (“He’s done everything right but I would not expect anything less from a son of King de Lago) and Rob Slade (“The King de Lago foals, not surprisingly carry the same qualities he did as a youngster. Good strong bone and muscle, good size and very much athletes”). Long live the King.

Brian Donohoe B
rian Donohoe doesn’t fancy talking about himself very much … and is definitely not the type to blow his own trumpet.
Preferring to operate behind the scenes, even Google struggles to fill in the blanks. Yet, for nigh on five decades, Brian has mixed it with captains of industry and icons of sport. Brian is a highly successful businessman with a penchant for innovation … has been integrally involved – both as player and administrator – with one of Australian Football’s most successful clubs … and a passionate part owner of a true ‘rags to riches’ star of the turf and breeding barn. He works hard – loves his footy – loves racing. In a nutshell, Brian Donohoe is the quintessential Australian story. Growing up in Moonee Ponds (long before Dame Edna Everage brought international fame to the Melbourne suburb), Brian was a fair hand at footy, playing 35 first grade games with Essendon between 1956-60. Although tied up with the neighbouring Aberfeldie football club for a spell, and spending some time coaching in Tasmania, Brian’s love affair with Essendon continues unabated. But he also needed to earn a crust and, by the late 60s, early 70s, Brian was toiling away at his mum’s milk bar in Moonee Ponds.

equissageowner profile With families becoming more mobile during this time (yes, children, there was a time when households didn’t have three cars), Brian cottoned onto the idea of selling ice to road warriors on their way to the beach or a barbie. Purchasing an ice maker for the shop, that machine churned out 30 bags a day and Brian began catering to some hotels in the district. Soon enough, demand began outstripping supply and Brian was determined to step up to the plate. Thus Donohoe Ice was formed and a business legend born. From those humble milk bar beginnings, Donohoe Ice can now produce up to 150 tons of ice per day. Sure, you might not recognise the name, but it’s odds on you’ve sampled their product at some stage. For starters, the company now supplies Qantas, Virgin and Jet Star and, in fact, every plane departing Melbourne carries Donohoe’s frozen water.
And what about all those times you’ve ducked into a Mobil, BP, Caltex or United servo to keep the slab and chardy cool … Donohoe Ice. While it should come as no surprise that its clientele is diverse, the ‘honour roll’ is remarkable and testimony to Donohoe Ice’s reputation: with over 500 independent customers retailing in supermarkets, liquor outlets, restaurants, bars and hotels, catering groups ensure that the coldies remain cold Formula 1, Australian Open Tennis, Melbourne Cricket Ground, Telstra Dome, Royal Melbourne Show and, in particular, the spring carnival. If it’s all sounding a little Melbourne-centric, Donohoe Ice also carted semi trailer loads of ice to Sydney each day for the 2000 Olympics. With Christmas around the corner, ‘Mexicans’ can rest assured that their seafood has been kept fresh as Donohoe Ice is the sole supplier for the Melbourne Fish Market too. It’s a matter of great pride for Brian – who has sons Peter and Rohan on board – that Donohoe Ice continues to kick goals from all over the park, purchasing and consolidating Polar Ice, Pure Ice and City Ice in recent years. Advances in technology have been substantial as well. Given that yours truly can’t make it from the tap to the fridge without spilling half the ice

Donohoe Ice also has a cold storage division at its Tullamarine base, where 3000 pallets of frozen food is stored by Cadbury Schweppes, Top Cut, Gold Field Turkeys, Harry and Larry Ice Cream, Victoria Cold Store and Decicco Cream to name a few.
Cold storage is nothing new … those industrious Persians started the caper in approximately 400BC, but Donohoe Ice has turned it into an art form. So much so that one of its divisions includes Ice Carving, supplying all the major hotels in Melbourne with those fancy ice sculptures.

Maintaining close ties with Essendon FC despite the pressures of growing his business, Brian was made chairman of selectors in 1980, a position he held for seven seasons.
It coincided with an era of amazing success for the Bombers, who took out the AFL flag in 1984-85. Under the coaching of Brian’s great mate, Kevin Sheedy, the roster included greats such as Simon Madden, Paul Salmon, Tim Watson, Terry Daniher, Mark Harvey, Mark Thompson, Paul Vander Haar and company. Brian was also appointed chairman of recruiting in 88-96, a period which saw the likes of James Hird, Matthew Lloyd, Scott Lucas, Michael Long and Darren Bewick introduced to the club.
There’s a better way to keep your horse safe.
No other horse fencing protects your horse like Wiacoat Polytech Zappa Rail. If a horse runs into the Zappa Rail fence, the rails absorb the energy of the collision along the entire run. The rails stretch and the brackets allow the rails to slide through them before easing back into the original position. This unique shock absorbing design minimises the risk of harm to the horse. And to help the horse respect the fence line Polytech Zappa Rail can also be electrified with a standard energiser. Tough, good looking, durable and virtually weather proof thanks to a UV stabilised engineering grade polymer, the 120mm wide Polytech Zappa Rail never needs painting and is easily installed without specialised tools. Quite simply, it’s the safest place to put your horse. For more information please call 0428 877 362 sales@wiacoat.com.au www.wiacoat.com.au

equissageowner profile Fittingly, Brian took up the reins in establishing the Essendon Hall of Fame in 1994, taking a three month sabbatical to put that baby to bed. By the late 90s, Brian could kick back a bit and enjoy the spoils of his toil, deciding to take a share in a horse with his old mate, Michael Duffy. A member of Essendon’s inner circle, Michael was a minister in the Hawke Government and is now chairman of Racing Victoria Limited. “A group of us – Michael included – get together every three or four months and have lunch … been doing it since 1980,” Brian reveals. “Anyway, Michael asked if I wanted to go into this horse with him …” The horse was called Pretrial and while he was no world beater, he did win four in the Riverina and Brian was sold. Yet, if Pretrial baited the hook, Brian’s next neddy would seal his fate. Following the 2001 Sydney Classic Yearling Sale, Michael phoned Brian and asked him if he’d fancy taking a share or two in a Royal Academy colt that John Symons had picked up for a mere $9,000. With Kevin Sheedy on board as well, Brian and son Peter took two sevenths of the partnership and the rest, as they say, is history. The colt – named Bel Esprit – would go on to win his first five races, including the Blue Diamond Stakes-G1. A bold front runner who captured the hearts and minds of Australia’s race going public, Bel Esprit was ridden by Wayne ‘Smokey’ Treloar, whose head bobbing and vigorous riding accentuated the horse’s catch me if you can tactics.
Business tips:
It takes a lot of hard work, a bit of luck, and a positive outlook when things get tough. 40
www.tracktotrack.com
A real barrier rogue, at least in the early days, Brian’s blood pressure must have gone through the roof as attendants struggled to get the colt into the starting blocks. But once those gates flew open, he was poetry in motion. Asked when he first knew Bel Esprit was something special, Brian said: “Breakfast with the stars on the Tuesday prior to the Blue Diamond. Do you know, they even changed the time of the race to accommodate Kevin (Sheedy) who was coaching that day.” Although tasting defeat for the first time in the Golden Slipper, Bel Esprit would go on to win the Doomben 10,000-G1 and run seconds in four other Group Ones, eventually retiring to Eliza Park Stud in the spring of 2003. Just as Bel Esprit could find the line, so too it would seem, do his progeny and with only two crops of racing age, the son of Royal Academy is reigning Champion Victorian Sire. And while it’s safe to assume that Bel Esprit has a rapidly growing fan base (covering an Australian record 266 mares last year), there is no-one that worships at the altar more than Brian Donohoe. Recently commencing a Bel Esprit ‘blog’, Brian has maintained records of EVERY Bel Esprit runner and every one of their starts (some 700 by mid-December). And he has kept just about every scrap of information written about his pride and joy. It’s a drive synonymous with everything Brian has tackled in life – his business, football administration, playing, coaching, ‘recreation’ and racehorse ownership. One thing the internet did throw up about Brian was quotes from the Australian Story: a piece they did on Kevin Sheedy in the wake of his sacking as Essendon coach last year. Lauding his long-time mate, Brian told the ABC: “He had a passion about what he wanted to do in his life” and “Kevin’s the sort of bloke you’d go to war with”. I’m tipping that if you asked a few people who have benefited from his passion, they’d say the same thing about Brian Donohoe.

Fashion was again a winner at the 2008 Melbourne Spring Carnival and, typically, Bruno Cannatelli (0411 155 724 www.ultimateracingphotos. com.au) was right in the thick of the action. We just don’t know how he keeps backing up every year for this Mission Impossible.

Horse Swimming Boat “We used TuffRock Poultice on the WA team of 4 horses we transported across the Nullabor, from Perth to Toowoomba and back, for the National Interschool Championships in October 2008 - a distance of approximately 9000kms in just over 2 weeks. Our horses thrived on the travel and bounced off the back of the truck in Perth at the end of this journey in great shape. TuffRock kept the horses legs cool and free from swelling and was brilliantly easy to use. It is a great product and happy to hear it’s now available in WA”. Kind regards, Dr Jenni Ahmat (BSc BVMS)
