Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love! Hamilton Wright Mabie

HOLIDAY 2011

Co-LAB.

C

o-Lab. is pleased to offer this holiday magalogue as our expression of joy

and glad tidings this season. This quote from Hamilton Wright Mabie encapsulates our feelings during this time of giving. Both personally and professionally, we were struck by this notion of a ‘conspiracy of love’ among family, friends, neighbors and communities that is truly the best gift to experience. The concept of a ‘conspiracy of love’ resonates so deeply for us at Co-Lab. as we seek to create and recreate furniture, one piece at a time, accepting at first a battered and worn state and re-envisioning a bright and beautiful future. We believe in loving old pieces back to life. Brokenness and disarray lead to fresh starts and great new beginnings. At Co-Lab. we bring together the offerings of both Super-Rural and Chairloom. We are working toward reusing and reinventing furniture that our clients choose and then transform with custom textile choices and practical, purposeful design. Our December photo shoot with talented photographer Steve Belkowitz was done in our newly-rented— and under construction— space in Ardmore, PA. As a team of workers maneuvered around us repairing the ceiling and rewiring the electrical mayhem, we hung white lights on a simple evergreen, swept a very dirty but beautiful floor and scraped spackle off to make room for the tree skirt. Steve shot one piece at a time, both old and new, in this hopeful and sparse setting as we admired the potential and second chance given to these pieces of furniture. The lovely evergreen in the photos and the furniture photographed in the space with it, reminded us as the quote from Alexander Smith says, ‘trees are your best antiques.’ We wish you joy that comes from love and second chances this holiday.

nce was lost, now is found. At Chairloom there are two guiding principles

behind our work. 1. The value of being found. We cherish the good bones beneath torn, faded or otherwise timeworn fabric. We see the potential in wood that has lost its luster. 2. The importance of second chances. Life is all about second chances. There is always the hope of being found when we are lost. We believe in restoring old pieces and making them new all over again. We recycle, restore and recreate old pieces, making repairs where necessary, sanding, oiling, re-staining or even painting wood and breathing life into an old piece with today’s beautiful textiles. t Co-Lab. we are working on creating entirely new pieces that can sit just

as beautifully with an antique as they can with contemporary furniture. We build and upholster each piece by hand in our studio and we bring our passion for beautiful textiles to every thing we make. There is room for endless customization in size, color, and materials. Every piece we make is meant to be as beautiful as it is functional. Look for our new offerings in the spring.

MOLLY GIVES... Molly Andrews, Chairloom

Patent leather fold-up flat Sometimes we have to give ourselves a little something, too, right? I treated myself to a pair of Yosi Samara’s flats in red patent leather this December.

Chain stitch duck pillow You can’t go wrong when you give something by Virginia Johnson. Everything she makes

Feather earrings These are an affordable and ‘grownup’ version of the bright pink feather extension I took my seven year-old daughter to have woven into her hair.

is whimsical and beautiful.

Upstate silk noil scarf In my world, tie-dye never goes out of style. I love this up-to-date way of gifting my Dead Head friends & family!

Rope swing I’m giving my kids a rope swing for Christmas. We’ll attach it to our back deck that hangs 15 feet above the ground and look forward to spring!

Music Giving music as a gift has always been a favorite way for me to tell my friends I love them! These are two of my current favorite albums.

qualities one experiences when interacting with the 28 year-old mid-western-raised artist. The exhilarating sensation of the first summer dip is the same relaxed calm and relief that Samantha brings to her front door upon welcome. ut it wasn’t a swimming pool where we first met Samantha, it was at The Brooklyn

Flea where we chatted about design blogs, Yorkshire terriers and chairs. Samantha had a fantastic old wingback she’d found on Craig’s List in need of Chairloom’s love. Now newly reupholstered in a solid charcoal grey velvet, this classic wing chair sits surrounded by Samantha and boyfriend Aaron Hauck’s large and small paintings in their laid-back NYC apartment with Monkey & Cricket two of the funniest and most adorable Yorkie mixes you could ever meet. Now a full time painter, Samantha has allowed her past summer memories in the lake country of Minnesota to inspire her painting. Working on commission full time, Samantha looks forward to a trip to California in January — seeking new content and inspiration.

HEIRLOOMS & CHAIRLOOM

T

hankfully when Mary Hefner was on Lonny’s Facebook page it ‘suggested’ she

might like Chairloom. Not only did she ‘like it’ but she became a follower and is now quite well versed in textile kings and queens like Michael Devine, Amanda Nisbet, Katherine Rally and Madeline Weinrib. With home furnishing, just like everything, you have to start somewhere. After purchasing a 1895 shingle-style home, Mary and her husband Brennan started to furnish it with a one-piece-at-a-time mentality. They first fell in love with a completely neglected, beat up but stately wing chair they spotted on Chairloom’s Facebook page. While this was a physically ‘sight-unseen’ purchase, it was love at first Facebook post. The chair was soon to be completely restored and re-dressed in Katherine Rally’s Garden Gate textile (handmade in Bali) a Chairloom recommendation and favorite.

A new ‘heirloom’ An inflatable moose head that comes out every year for the holidays.

Heirloom, meet Chairloom… Two Chairloom pieces at home in Pelham. A ‘new’ restoration in Katherine Rally sits with an heirloom in Katie Ridder.

Pelham collaboration

M

ary and Brennan faced the move from TriBeCa and into an empty home with

no formal design experience, but after making an acquaintance with Chairloom quickly realized that they loved ‘fun and bold textiles’ and were drawn to strong colors. After emailing and viewing some fabric samples by mail, Mary and Brennan visited The Brooklyn Flea to see a few other Chairloom pieces. They purchased their second vintage chair as the Flea and it was soon reupholstered in John Robshaw’s Aleppo Coral, a hand-blocked fabric made in India. The couple was soon hooked on the concept of unique furniture pieces reupholstered in their personal custom fabric choices. Mary said she felt emboldened by Chairloom’s

‘creative flexibility.’

After: renewed in Katherine Rally’s Garden Gate textile

Before: the abandoned chair was all potential

A distant heirloom This chair’s first life was in Shanghai where her grandparents lived after World War II. Katie Ridder’s Moonflower fabric in turquoise had the energy and spirit that resonated with the family history of the piece.

Pelham collaboration

One chair led to another, then to an antique carved settee. In between those purchases and makeovers, the couple acquired Mary’s paternal grandfather’s Baker chair from storage in Texas. This chair’s first life was in Shanghai, where her grandparents lived after World War II. When contemplating its second life consideration was taken — perhaps subconsciously at first— to this far eastern location. Katie Ridder’s gorgeous Moonflower fabric in turquoise had the energy and spirit that resonated with the family history of the piece. Lastly, Mary’s mother passed along her childhood reading chair to sit in her young granddaughter Olivia’s room. From grandmother to granddaughter via Chairloom. A cheerful hot pink and white chevron fabric acquired in Philadelphia’s South 4th Street fabric row helps this redo bring happiness to a family in a new phase of life. Given a choice between antique and vintage furniture finds from Chairloom and seating from a high end retailer, our Pelham clients choose Chairloom’s mission and approach to reuse and reinvent, and to participate in the process of recreation through an exquisite selection of textiles.

The Brooklyn Flea Mary and Brennan visited Chairloom at The Brooklyn Flea and chose their second vintage chair. They picked John Robshaw’s Aleppo in Coral, a hand-blocked fabric made in India.

Grandmother to Granddaughter A cheerful hot pink and white chevron fabric acquired in Philadelphia’s South 4th Street fabric row transforms this heirloom and bring happiness to a family in a new phase of life.
