2021 Great Aloha Run Welcome Messages 2021 Title Sponsor Message

Aloha All! We are so grateful to those of you who joined us for the 2020 Hawaii Pacific Health Great Aloha Run, as either an Entrant, Volunteer or DONOR! Last year was just wonderful because in addition to having fun running/walking with thousands of your “friends”, we were able to give monies to 100 organizations!!

Aloha Great Aloha Run Supporter!

It is because of YOU that this was possible! MAHALO, MAHALO, MAHALO! Our primary goal is to serve the Community we live in and Love! As a 37 year Volunteer, I am always thrilled to see our participants having so much fun and the thousands of Volunteers who participate in this “Race with Compassionate Love!” The Hawaii Community is Great because its’ “Mantra” is to help each other – that’s what ALOHA is all about! We were at a loss when the pandemic hit us and for the first time ever, the Hawaii Pacific Health Great Aloha Run will not be doing a physical event. Instead, we made the decision to pivot to a virtual event and Humbly thank you for your continued support! By doing so, you are continuing the legacy of giving back to our Community! Have fun doing the 8 mile “trek” over the 8-day period, February 8-15, and enjoy some of the activities and events that we will be offering via our Social Media! When you sign up, virtually, your contribution supports countless families and Hawaii non-profits. We do this with compassion and much love because “Together Mo’ Bettah!” Once you finish your 8 miles of Great Aloha Run, we will reward you with a cool T-shirt and our beautiful Finisher Medallion featuring the Iconic Aloha Tower and Aloha Stadium! With the money raised, we hope to bless more than 50 charitable organizations, thanks to your generosity and giving heart! Mahalo and have a healthy and active 2021!

These are unique times but that is not stopping us from putting on the Great Aloha Run for the 37th straight year. In 2021, to protect the health and safety of our runners and the local community, the iconic event will be done virtually for the first time. One of the run’s unique strengths is its appeal to various age groups as well as to the different levels of runners’ proficiency. This year, perhaps more than ever, runners can participate as they choose over an 8-day period and still receive the benefit of healthy exercise while raising money for many local charities. The GAR team has worked tirelessly to come up with some exceptional and clever ways to keep participants engaged, including virtual musical performances, high school challenges, some great prizes for registered participants and much more. Our own physicians, who normally staff all of the aid stations on the course as well as the stadium, will virtually provide health tips to all participants and information on how to safely train for the run. I could not talk about the Great Aloha Run without paying tribute to Carole Kai, the run founder and primary source of inspiration. There simply would not be a run without Carole, which means that the millions of dollars raised for the many local charities would not exist. Carol, on behalf of the more than 7,000 members of the Hawai‘i Pacific Health family, I would like to extend to you and your team our sincere appreciation, not only for putting on a fabulous event all of these years, but for also contributing to the health and well-being of the local community in so many ways. Mahalo,

Aloha Pumehana,

Carole Kai Onouye 37 Year Volunteer

And, I could do nothing without the Lord helping me. “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the Love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions…” - 1 John 3:17

Why Do the GAR? - Long time participants discuss why they love to do the Great Aloha Run

MR. MASUO KIN Great Aloha Run Plank Owner (37 year Participant) “The Great Aloha Run is a culmination of a sickness regime, training throughout the year, on the treadmill, walking at Hawaiian Memorial Park regularly, and completing the GAR in 2 hours and 25 minutes. I enjoy being fit, stay healthy, and last year my daughter joined me, then my granddaughter, and this year a party of 10 people joined me including relatives from Philadelphia. So, I will keep walking, training and hope to complete the 37th Great Aloha Run and many more in the future.”

RENEE OMORI-KUDO James B. Castle High School -GAR High School Challenge Coordinator I want to give my students an opportunity to show school spirit, build relationships and be healthy! Especially after this past year, we need to help each other heal and focus on our well being.

BEN Gutierrez, Hawaii News Now – Reporter and Weather Anchor “The Great Aloha Run was my first timed, longer-distance event in 2012 and it was so much fun that I’ve done it every year since then. It’s not only fun, it’s also benefiting so many Hawaii organizations and the people they serve, so it’s even more important that I participate this year -- even if I don’t get the Taiko drummers beneath the H-1 airport viaduct!”

JOHNATHAN LYAU Great Aloha Run Plank Owner (37 year Participant) “37 years has flown by! The GAR is always something I plan my weekend around and I’ve done it each year because of the excitement and celebration I have with many of my fellow friends who also participate! It’s really a fun atmosphere from start to finish! My two wins were exciting, but it’s just as exciting when my wife and son run it as they did last year! It was my son’s first GAR in 2020 and look forward to having him with me each year as I continue the streak!”

CAROLYN KARGOL and MISSY LANG Great Aloha Run Plank Owners (37year Participants) “We enjoy doing the Great Aloha Run because it gets us up and out to enjoy a beautiful (rain or shine) morning along with thousands of others. We do the GAR to support many local charities and to feel the true spirit of aloha. We have a tradition to walk down our street the night before and see the stadium all lit up knowing the many hands that work so hard to make it a successful event.”

Rosalinda Larkin Habilitation Tech Bayata Agency and Care Hawaii “I have always been an advocate of keeping healthy and fit and I encourage my friends and people I meet to do the same. As a Single mother raising a son with a disability, running for me is my release. During Covid, I started signing up for virtual running events and I did a bunch! I am so excited that I will be doing the Great Aloha Run for the first time!”

Sounds of Freedom - A Message from the Tropic Lightning Command Team On behalf of the entire 25th Infantry Division & U.S. Army Hawaii, we want to wish our entire Hawai`i Ohana and all race participants Aloha and a very Happy New Year. We are immensely proud and honored to be able to execute the Sounds of Freedom – a Division tradition with roots in the mid-1970s – for the 35th year in a row as part of the Great Aloha Run. Although we must do so virtually this year, our appreciation for the continued outpouring of support for our military and Hawaiian communities through the charities of Carole Kai is nonetheless immeasurable. Good luck to all during this year’s race and we remain ever hopeful in being able to once again join you in person next year. As always, Aloha and Mahalo Nui Loa from our Ohana to yours. STRIKE HARD!

James B. Jarrard Major General, U.S. Army Commanding General

William D. Pouliot Command Sergeant Major, U.S. Army Senior Enlisted Advisor

History of the 25th Infantry Division Activated on October 1, 1941, the 25th Infantry Division was formed at Schofield Barracks from the old Hawaiian Division, which had been formed in 1921. Two months following its activation, the 25th Infantry Division was thrust into combat when it helped to defend O`ahu during and after the Japanese attack of December 7, 1941. The Division was originally comprised of three infantry regiments, one of which was the 298th Infantry Regiment of the Hawai`i National Guard. From the beginning, the 25th Infantry Division has always been Hawaii’s division and is the only division in the active Army still posted where it formed. During World War II, the 25th Infantry Division earned its enduring nickname of ‘Tropic Lightning’ on the island of Guadalcanal and, since then, its soldiers have gone on to serve valiantly in combat, peacekeeping, and humanitarian operations in Korea, Vietnam, Haiti, Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Most notably, the Division counts 43 Medal of Honor recipients amongst its ranks, the second most of any Army division. Today, the 25th Infantry Division’s 12,000 soldiers are engaged with regional partners and allies to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific and they remain prepared to deploy at a moment’s notice to fight and win in large-scale combat operations. Additionally, as America’s Pacific Division, the 25th Infantry Division operates the Army’s only jungle operations training center that prepares soldiers to operate in one of the most unforgiving environments on earth. Tropic Lightning soldiers are proud to call Hawai`i home and are honored to carry on the warrior legacy left to them by those who trained for combat on the Leilehua Plain in centuries past. *The 25th Infantry Division & U.S. Army Hawaii’s representation or participation in the Sounds of Freedom Run does not constitute official endorsement of the Great Aloha Run or its sponsors.

2021 Sounds Of Freedom Supporters In 1974, Major General Harry Brooks Jr. (then Commander of the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks), would lead his soldiers chanting cadence through quiet Wahiawa Town. The peaceful little town expressed its concerns and Major General Harry Brooks Jr. coined the phrase: “The Sounds of Freedom”. “When you hear the chanting of our soldiers, they are in training. When you do Not hear them, it means they are off to defend and protect our great country. They are the “Sounds of Freedom”, said MG Brooks. Fast forward to 1986, LTG William Schneider (the Colonel under MG Brooks at that time) contacts Carole Kai and asks her to allow the soldiers in Hawaii to participate in the Great Aloha Run as a special division called the Sounds of Freedom (SOF). **”In 1985, the GAR’s inaugural year, a contingent of 600 Marines from 2nd Brigade (Kaneohe), led by Colonel Antonio Betta, as a show of “Goodwill” before the Sounds of Freedom was born!” Since its beginning, the SOF has become the most exciting and inspirational division in the GAR! Although dominated by the US Army’s 25th ID and 8th TSC, the Sounds of Freedom is also wonderfully represented by the Marines, the Air Force, the Navy, the Coast Guard, the Hawaii National Guard and local JROTC programs! As an appreciation and in gratitude, in May 2010, the GAR sent a contingent for a “MAHALO” Luau Tour to Iraq for our brave men and women of the 25th Infantry Division and the Hawaii National Guard! To date, the GAR has given more than $990,000 to all the branches of the Military in Hawaii!

We are grateful to these wonderful companies that made it possible for the donations. These are “Sounds of Freedom” Supporters/Sponsors: SOF Title Sponsor: BANK OF HAWAII (Founding Sponsor of the SOF since 1985)

In this unusual year, we partnered with the Mid Pacific Road Runner Club (MPRRC) to create a virtual In Training program. Mahalo to Ron Alford and the MPRRC for the support and guidance throughout. Together with our “OFFICIAL TIME KEEPER AND WATCH” partner SEIKO, our hope was to create some value in the information that was shared both about training, products, and all that is running related.

If for some reason you missed any of the training, you are welcome to use the schedule for whatever training goals you might have. https://www.greataloharun.com/Race/GreatAlohaRun/Page-8 .

We hope you continue to stay healthy and fit year-round and whatever your goal, we want you to be safe from Covid-19 as well as traffic and other challenges out on the road, so please pay attention and obey the traffic rules while exercising. Don’t forget to consult with your doctor prior to exercising so that you know you are in good health. Have a great run or walk!

How To Complete Your Virtual Run:

Logging Your Progress:

CONGRATULATIONS! You Earned It!

Instead of getting up super early on Presidents’ Day this year, you can sleep in a little and the best part is, you have eight days to complete it! You can do it alone or with a few friends. You are in control of your own route, at your pace and duration! DO what you are comfortable doing! You can choose to split the 8.15 miles up over the 8 days or if you feel like pushing through with all 8.15 miles in one day, then GO FOR IT! What’s most important is that we stay safe (be compliant with COVID-19 protocols.) Remember why your past and future participation in the Great Aloha Run is so important to the community. Know that your participation is supporting our island community.

Once you’ve completed your milage, you can log onto the Great Aloha Run website and locate the LEADERBOARD tab https://runsignup.com/Race/ Results/99433#resultSetId215860;perpage:100. Once on that page, you can find and click the “Submit Virtual Results” tab. This will allow you to log your miles along the way to completion. The virtual run concept is done with the honor system in mind and hope you complete the 8.15 miles, but we understand that life gets in the way sometimes. Either way, we’ll be sending out your finisher shirt and medal following February 16th, 2021.

The Hawaii Pacific Health is committed to the health and well-being of our team members, race staff, participants and valued volunteers. During these unprecedented times, we are taking all the CDC-recommended steps in practicing social distancing, and other best practices while preparing shipment of your Swag. We will begin shipping your Swag box (Finisher Shirt and Medal) starting on February 16th and will make every effort to get it to you as soon as possible. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, we anticipate some shipping delays. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Holiday Food Distribution As Covid-19 spread across our nation, it has impacted all aspects of our daily lives including our economy, education for our keiki, public health concerns and “food insecurity.” In 2020, 1 In 4 households experienced food insecurity. It was clear that the most critical need during this unprecedented time was the inability for folks to provide food for their households. For many who found themselves in food lines, this was a humbling experience but, at the same time, was a relief and comfort to know that their community is behind them. This is the true ALOHA that we all share. On December 18, 2020, the Hawaii Pacific Health Great Aloha Run, in partnership with the Hawaii Foodbank and the City and County of Honolulu, raised $185,000 dollars that provided enough food for the holidays for nearly 3,500 families. A huge part of this support came from our local building industry leaders and we send our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to each of them. ‘Together is really more bettah!’ because Together, we made a huge difference in the lives of many last holiday season!

“When I was in High School, “many, many years ago- :0)”, we only had organized sports. And cheerleading/song leading opportunities to be a part of. These were limited to good athletes and popular people at the time; the regular people, like me, didn’t participate in sports as a whole.” - Carole Kai Onouye

Great Aloha Run High School Challenge Since 2004, the Great Aloha Run has been presenting the High School Challenge for 100 students (and teachers) from O’ahu schools. Generous companies from the Community sponsor these high school entrants to participate in the Great Aloha Run. Part of this participation is the opportunity to raise monies for their respective schools. It’s our way of showing appreciation and support for the participating schools. Our goal is to promote health and fitness, and to foster sportsmanship and school pride! For the last 17 years, High Schoolers compete in friendly competition both at the Expo and at the Finish Line at Aloha Stadium. This being such an unprecedented year due to Covid-19, we were able to welcome Hilo High School and the Kurisu Family to the GAR `Ohana! High Schoolers will participate on their own campuses and 4 students from each school will come together at Farrington High School (or digitally) on Saturday, February 13, 2021, starting at 9:00 am. The finals will be live streamed on our Social Media and we invite you log on and cheer for your favorite high school! This year’s theme: “Together Mo` Bettah!”, is resonating with so many people because we are all in this Pandemic together, and as we help each other, we feel, “together Mo` Bettah!” Thank you, Students and Teachers, for your participation and help with the Greater Good and your School! -Carole Kai Onouye

Kicking It with GAR - Leahi Soccer Club The Leahi Soccer Club (LSC) is a non-profit organization that exists to promote girls’ and women’s soccer in the state of Hawaii. Leahi is the Hawaiian name for Diamond Head in honor of its early beginnings in the 70s when the first women’s team was established. It wasn’t until 1980, when our youth program was founded by Ahmad Saidin, our first Leahi SC Board of Director. Over the years, Leahi has enjoyed tremendous success as one of the premier clubs in Hawaii, consistently sending teams to many prestigious tournaments on the mainland. Leahi Soccer Club is proudly noted for placing more soccer players in collegiate programs across the country than any other club in Hawaii; many of them are Division I and Division II scholarship recipients. We are proud of the fact that our players have been honored for their achievements locally, regionally and nationally. Our philosophy is to provide an environment of care and respect that challenges our players to be outstanding people and soccer players who are creative problem solvers with strong character and a commitment to excellence – on and off the field. One of the ways we achieve this is by having our players participate in community service projects, such as volunteering with The Special Olympics, American Lung Association and The Great Aloha Run. Leahi Soccer Club began participating with the Great Aloha Run in the early 2000s. This is a great opportunity for our players to give back to our community by overseeing one of the water stations. Not only does volunteering with the Great Aloha Run, help teach our players the importance of being positive contributors in our community, the players also have a blast and enjoy seeing the reactions and the impact that they have by cheering on the runners.

“I’ve been taking care of Aid Station #4 with Leahi Soccer Club since 2008. Because of the dedication and commitment of the students/players, parents, coaches and team managers, we’ve been able to help the Great Aloha Run runners finish their run strong. The time spent on preparing, emailing, and coordinating doesn’t amount to the satisfaction of the final outcome – the money raised to allow Carole Kai to help numerous charities around the island(s). It doesn’t take a lot of effort or time to help this amazing non-profit organization to reach their goals; it just take heart and belief.” - Daisy Freitas, Lead Coordinator for the 4th Aide Station
