Connecting Young Nebraskans Summit
By University of Nebraska-Lincoln The fourth annual Connecting Young Nebraskans Summit will be in Kearney, Nebraska November 7. Kearney, Hastings and Grand Island are working together to host the conference for young leaders across Nebraska. The leaders will share ideas about how they can improve Nebraska’s future. An evening social November 6 will allow time for participants to network. “Young leaders from the tri-cities are excited to join forces to offer the state a dynamic conference, centered on professional and personal development,” said Mary Berlie of Grand Island, a member of the host community team. Keynote speaker Joe Gerstandt, co-founder of Talent Anarchy, will talk about “brave new leadership.” He will discuss how authenticity, divergent thinking and constructive conflict can drive creativity and innovation for young Nebraskans and will explain the social architecture and individual practices required to unleash creativity and innovation in organizations, communities and other settings. continued on page A3

NILE Merit Heifer applications now online
The Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) is once again taking applications for participants in the 2014 2015 NILE Merit Heifer Program. The Merit Heifer program is a “live animal” scholarship that strives to help youth get a start in the beef cattle business by awarding heifer calves to participants chosen based on merit, future goals, and ability to care for the animal. Any youth ages 12-16, who is a 4-H or FFA member, may apply. Applications must be postmarked no later than September 15. An application is available online at www.thenile.org or by calling the NILE office. During the program duration, participants are responsible for raising the heifer, arranging for her to be bred, completing the record keeping procedure and bringing the animal back one year later as a bred replacement heifer for exhibit at the NILE Stock Show. Bill Pelton, Merit Heifer Chairman, says, “This program would not be possible without the generous support of our donor ranchers and we are very grateful to them.” This year the NILE will select twenty-five recipients and match them up with donors from across the region. In addition to application from eligible recipients, the NILE is also taking applications from ranches wishing to participate through the donation of a heifer calf. continued on page A2

Nebraska Grazing Conference to include live cattle handling demo By University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Many will remember the 1998 movie, “The Horse Whisperer,” starring Robert Redford. One of the consultants on that movie was Curt Pate from Texas. Pate will show why his expertise was sought by the movie producers when he demonstrates low-stress animal handling techniques at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds on the second day of the 14th annual Nebraska Grazing Conference. Pate’s appearance on the program is sponsored in part by the Beef Checkoff. The two-day conference will begin at the Kearney Ramada, a change in location from past years’ gatherings, on Tuesday, August 12. Topics that day will include: water capture, transfer and storage; soil health and grazing; mob grazing; wildlife and grazing; managing during and after drought; and GrassSnap, a new mobile app for monitoring grasslands. Pate will start things off the second day, August 13, with a talk on stockmanship and stewardship fundamentals, followed by

Additional morning speakers will address management practices of the 2013 Leopold Conservation Award winner and research on switchgrass for forage and biomass. After lunch the conference will move to the fairgrounds for Pate’s live cattle handling and roping demonstration. In addition to Pate, conference presenters include faculty in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s (UNL) Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, government agencies and farmers and ranchers who discuss their experiences with various grazing methods.
