The Importance of Stability - Simon McLeay (CEO) It seems pertinent to lead this article with politics before business, given what has been happening on a global stage in recent weeks. The still raw news that Britain has opted out of the EU will ensue headline news I assume for some time, as the country begins to come to terms not only with the decision, but with the gravy train of issues it will unleash. The impact of Brexit and the upcoming US elections may well have a flow on affect to our country. Both events are already hot topics here as we all wait to see just what it means for us all. NZ is by and large in pretty good shape, we have successfully built an economy that has focussed on excellence. In doing so our economy was able to survive a recession relatively unscathed. This approach provides confidence that will be in good stead when we again face the potential of changing times globally. Although we hear of instability, the markets particularly lately within the dairy sector, our annual Field Days prove we are again a well-heeled nation and far from in the mire even when facing extremely challenging times in specific sectors.
$
On an industry level, we have seen lately some of our competitors grappling with change, especially in achieving balance across their online sales channels and traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ sales and the integration of such business units. We, at Trade Tools, made the right call a few years ago to tighten our business focus on our core competencies. This included the need to integrate a number of business units, making tough calls on infrastructure and entering early, the on-line marketplace. It is a great pleasure that we are now seeing the rewards of these efforts and those difficult decisions with a settled and focused business across both traditional and online sales channels. Which ensures that our service levels are increasing and the market place expanding, providing confidence to our customers that we will be alongside them for many years to come. I take pride in saying that our Trade Tools Group is now stronger than ever.

STARRETT – MACHINE LEVELS 98 Series Machinists’ Levels with ground & graduated vials. These vials are adjustable to a positive setting & are housed in a satin finished brass tube with a friction-fit closing cover to prevent breakage. The base of the levels features an involute groove running the length of the base, which provides a reliable seat for round work such as pipes or shafting. With the cross test vial, it is possible to simultaneously level in both directions. This prevents inaccuracies in the main vial reading caused by canting the level sidewise on round work.

CUTTER SELECTION TO SUIT THE MATERIALS YOU MACHINE Q. How do you judge the machinability of a material? A. Several features about a material affect the cutting tool performance. The cutting tool performance is decided by; • Tool Life • Chip Formation and Shape • Surface Finish • Cutting Force/Power. Q. What are some of these features? A. Not only does the physical properties (microstructure) and chemical properties (elemental make-up) have an effect on the cutting tool, but the process of material creation does as well. Casting, forging, welding, heat treating and other influences on material will affect the performance of your cutting tool. These processes will affect the machinability or in other words the materials resistance to chip making. Q. What affect does the material machinability have on the cutting tool selection? A. The movement of a chip along the face of the tool is a vital factor in the cutting process. Tools are designed with this contact area between the material and the tool as a significant design feature. The chip thickness is also geometrically related to the rake angle and the shear plane angle. Each material will create a different chip due to its key characteristics; for example a ductile material can create a chip 5 times as thick as the feed rate. Some materials have such tremendous elasticity properties they will not want to fracture causing long stringy chips. This is why all tools are not created equally. There is a need to understand materials and what a chip looks like during optimal conditions. Chips will discolour in certain materials such as steel, telling you when you have reached optimal temperatures (straw colour). If you begin machining with good smooth consistent chips and then notice the chips beginning to have irregular torn appearances, this will often warn you that your tool is deteriorating. You need to look at the various material properties that decide your tool choice.
Q. What are the material properties that mostly affect your tool choice? A. The main influences on your cutter choice are: HARDNESS - Defined as resistance to indentation, it is normally measured with a steel ball or diamond indenter (i.e. Rockwell). Increased hardness has a negative effect on productivity and tool life because the cutting loads and temperatures will increase as the material becomes more resistant to metal removal. However machining very soft materials poses a problem as they have a tendency to stretch, creating longer contact between the tool and the material - given enough time and temperature material will adhere to the cutting edge creating a built up edge. In milling, increased hardness produces higher impact loads as the cutting edges enter the cut, which can lead to premature breakdown if the right geometry is not used. STRENGTH - A materials resistance towards deformation under load is its strength. Deformation occurs in stages, it starts as elastic (stretching) deformation as the load is increased it moves to plastic deformation (material begins to physically change) and it ultimately ends in rupture (separation of material), which means a chip is created. Strength increases as hardness increases proportionally. Material with high strength requires a higher level of force to initiate chip formation, which requires stronger cutting edges and less positive cutting geometries.
DUCTILITY - Is the state of being flexible or elastic. These materials have a tendency to want to stay in the elastic stage of deformation during the chip making process, resisting separation to create a chip. Often machining highly ductile materials does not require a lot of power, but they do tend to develop built up edge, requiring sharp geometries on a cutting tool. Increasing Hardness and Strength leads to a decrease in ductility and is often incorporated to help improve the ability to machine these types of materials. THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY - Is the ability to transfer heat through the material. High thermal conductivity allows quicker dissipation of heat from the cutting zone. Friction is transformed into heat, which is responsible for increases in the temperature that will affect chip formation, removal and possible adhesion. WORK HARDENING PROPERTIES - During cutting, material undergoes a high rate of deformation near the cutting edge which can cause work hardening problems in some materials. The harder a material becomes the more power that is going to be required to create a chip. The depth of the work hardening and the hardness level are related to the deformation rate at the cutting zone, so if the depth is the same or less than the feed rate the tool will be cutting into the work hardened material. Stainless Steels and High Temp Alloys have a tendency to work harden, while Carbon Steels do not prove as challenging. INCLUSIONS - During the manufacturing and refining of metals during their liquid state, there is an opportunity for particles to get trapped in the material, these particles are known as inclusions. These are chemical compounds such as sulphides, oxides, silicates and others and vary in size. Normally these inclusions are hard and abrasive and interrupt the cutting process or flow.
