Caution urged with Burnett River recreation activity
Bundaberg Regional Council is recommending cautious use of the Burnett River as a recreational spot. Governance portfolio spokesperson, Cr. David Batt said the river remained a “tricky proposition” to navigate at the moment as well as still experiencing unsafe levels of e-coli bacteria. “Our wastewater treatment plants at Millbank and East Bundaberg are well on the road to recovery with East back to pre-flood operation and Millbank just a couple of weeks away from achieving safe levels of wastewater discharge.” Cr. Batt said the river certainly should not be utilised for recreation such as swimming or fishing. “The warnings we have had in place since the floods remain current,” he said. “The levels of e-coli are not safe for humans although, with the treatment plants now approaching peak operational efficiency we hope that will not be the position for too much longer.” Cr. Batt also cautioned boat owners and small craft operators to be aware that the floods had significantly altered the dynamics of the river. “We now have sandbanks where there were
none previously, sunken objects that can cause damage to small craft and certain navigation aids have either been damaged or swept away.” He said many of the river boat ramps were either unsafe to use or not able to be accessed at this point in time. “While the Burnett River is not a part of Council’s area of operation we appreciate that many residents utilise the river for recreational boating and fishing and the sooner we can have it returned to a usable facility, the better,” Cr. Batt added. Cr. Batt reminded boaties and fishermen that waterways from the Baffle to the Burrum were open for recreational activities. The Burnett is the only problem area at the moment but there are plenty of other pristine waterways locally. A spokesman from Maritime Safety Queensland confirmed that there are dangers associated with traversing the Burnett River. The message is that anyone boating on the river should only operate during daylight hours, keep a close lookout, reduce speed and wear a life jacket.

Truckies convoy for sick children Ninety-five trucks of various sizes convoyed to the Agro-
Trend Grounds on Sunday, March 24 to help raise money for a AGL rescue helicopter service as well as sick children in Bundaberg. Truckies and their trucks, from various Queensland towns including many participants from Bundaberg, all met at Brischetto’s Winery in Bargara and then in one long convoy, Ninety-Five trucks convoy along the Ring Road made their way to the Agro-Trend Grounds via the Ring Road. Many people cheered and waved as the two to three kilometre long convoy made its way to its destination. It was a sight to behold and the sound of 95 horns blaring at once was incredible. It was a fun way for the truckies to raise some much needed money for a great cause, whilst showing off their rigs. One truckie summed it all up on the convoy radio, “This is freakin awesome, yahoo!”. All trucks arrived at the Agro-Trend Grounds to hundreds of cheering spectators. Trucks were parked to give everyone a chance to have a good look at them, including the judges as prizes were given for best and shiniest rigs. Crowds were treated to live entertainment, headlined by country music singer Adam Harvey and a visit from the Easter Bunny. There were amusement rides for the kids, market stalls and plenty of food. A great day was had by all. Since its inaugural truck drive eight years ago, the fundraiser has raised $80,000, this total does not include what was raised last month. The total for this is still being Ned Kelly - Judged Best Rig tallied.

Residents of Bundaberg and surrounding areas will have the opportunity to experience the world renowned Bolshoi Ballet this June, as Bundaberg is one of eight regional centres to receive a simulcast of a Bolshoi Ballet performance live from the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) Lyric Theatre, Brisbane. The Bolshoi Ballet is one of the oldest and largest ballet companies in the world and in their first visit to Australia in almost two decades they will present an exclusive season in Brisbane, between May 30 and June 9. QPAC’s Chief Executive John Kotzas said he is pleased that QPAC is continuing to bring the world’s best to audiences across Queensland, thanks to partnerships with regional arts centre’s and with the use of satellite technology. “The Bolshoi Ballet is the second event in the QPAC International Series, a partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland to bring the world’s leading companies exclusively to Queensland,” Mr Kotzas said. Bundaberg Regional Council Sports, Recreation and Venues Portfolio spokesperson Lynne Forgan said it was exciting that Bundaberg has been chosen once will once again to participate in QPAC’s free simulcast program. “The Bolshoi Ballet simulcast will be the third for the Bundaberg region and follows on from three very successful regional simulcasts. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 2011, and the successful simulcasts of The Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra with The Hamburg State Opera and a performance of Opera Australia’s Madama Butterfly both in 2012,” Councillor Forgan said. “The Bolshoi Ballet is one of the world’s most

Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett is calling on local residents to have their say on youth justice policy as the Newman Government looks to develop its youth justice blueprint. Mr Bennett said the recently-released Safer Streets Crime Action Plan and survey would give Queenslanders an opportunity to voice their opinions on the state’s youth justice system. “This is an issue many people have an opinion on and it is critical that any future policy decisions are made in the best interests of our local communities,” Mr Bennett said. “It was an LNP election commitment to trial youth boot camps and we have already established an early intervention camp on the Gold Coast and a sentenced camp in Cairns. “On the one year anniversary of coming to government, the Premier and the AttorneyGeneral announced three additional boot
camps in Townsville, Rockhampton and the Fraser Coast. “However, as promised in the Government’s second six-month action plan, the review of youth justice will continue and this paper is a key element of the review.” Mr Bennett called on Burnett and Bundaberg residents to complete the survey and have their say on youth justice. “This is not an issue that can be fixed overnight, but with the input of the community we can ensure the voices of Queenslanders are heard and will inform future reforms,” he said. The paper also includes a summary of the criminal law reforms the Newman Government has implemented so far, including increased penalties for child sex offenders, murderers and people who assault or evade police. The paper and survey are available at: www.justice.qld.gov.au until June 30.

Natural disaster and rates relief Bundaberg district ratepayers should have pay their rates, should contact Council on 1300
received their half yearly rate notices which were posted Monday, February 25. Whilst Council is required by law to issue its half-yearly Rate Notices, Council is very aware that many people have suffered severe financial loss as a result of the recent natural disasters and may not be in a position to pay their rates. Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor, Cr. Mal Forman, who is responsible for the Finance portfolio, said he had written a letter to all ratepayers, which will accompany the rates notices, expressing his concern for the community, and explaining how ratepayers could apply for rates relief if necessary. Cr. Forman added that, in order to assist ratepayers, Council had delayed the issue of Rate Notices by two weeks, and had extended the due date for payment of rates by an additional two months, to May 24. The Mayor also noted that, ratepayers who are experiencing financial difficulties as a result of the natural disaster, which affects their ability to
883 699 to discuss their specific circumstances with the Rates Team. If necessary, an Application Form will be forwarded to them to apply for rates relief, which will comprise additional time to pay their rates and/or reduced service charges for lost Council services. Cr Forman requested that ratepayers should advise anyone who is not aware of this, that rates relief is available. The Mayor wished to assure all those in the community, who have suffered personal loss or damage, that Council will work with them as they recover from the tolls of these overwhelming events. Council remains totally committed to facilitating resilience in the community, and will continue to work collaboratively and compassionately with residents, community organisations and business operators. Ratepayers who do not receive their notices by March 8 are requested to contact Council on 1300 883 699, or call into any Council service centre where details of due charges will be provided.

MONTHLY FISHING UPDATE
March was a month best forgotten. What with all the rain, wind, floods as fishing goes it was mostly a waste of time, or was it? I spent most of march sorting out my tackle boxes, rods, reels, boat trailer and boat, although I never went fishing I looked back and found a bad month of March was actually very productive. I have always been too busy fishing to do the little things until it is too late, like a small amount of rust showing on my trailer cross bar turned into a mammoth rebuild of the whole trailer, as the rust had actually gone right through the bottom of each bar on the trailer. At this point I must thank a good mate of mine Graham Williamson he was terrific he bought over his Mig Welder and did nearly all the work over three days and nights and totally rebuilt my trailer for me, “thanks mate”, it’s a fantastic trailer. Graham, like me, is a member of the Bundaberg Sports Fishing Club. This leads me to the question, how many of you actually check your trailers? Amanda with Sure we wash them after each trip, same as our rods and reels, but when you an Elliott River count up how much money you have tied up in all your fishing gear plus boat and Mangrove Jack trailer, you will be surprised. So do what I did and check out your trailer, nobody likes being stuck on the side of the road, do we? Just one last question, how long since you removed your trailer wheels and bearings, re-greased them and put them back on? Easter’s been and gone hope some of you got out and about, here’s what’s biting. Whiting is at the flats near the Baffle river mouth up to the mud flats at Winfield, plus good Flathead on the drop offs near the mouth, there are Jew fish in the mouth and just outside on the north side, fish the dirty water line on the incoming, tide same on the out tide, there are also a few crabs in North Creek. The Kolan is fishing about the same but the tide is reaching further up here, plenty of good crabs about and a few nice Bream. DO NOT FISH THE BURNETT due to three sewerage plants going under in the floods, fish and crabs have been tested for all kinds of nasties. My sources tell me it will be after the big tides in May before it will be safe to catch a feed from the Burnett River. The Elliott is fishing OK for Whiting and Flathead although you will have to search for them, the floods have also moved some of the sand banks, so go slowly, some nice Jew fish have been taken from just out the mouth on 5” inch white Gulp plastics and Mullet fillets. The Burrum has been on fire with Whiting being the fish of the day. Bait has been chopped prawn, worm and artificial worm. Some good flathead have also been landed. A report came in that a school of Chopper Tailor showed up early on the morning of the March 18, with approximately 15 landed in quick succession, before they moved on. Due to the weather the dams have been busy and reports have come in of some good catches of Bass and Barramundi, although the Barramundi are not all rod breaker most being around the 60 to 75cm, a few biggies have been taken. Try plastics mainly in the multi-colours or Halco gold Bombers, spinners have been doing the damage on Bass, Many of the outside fishers are getting a bit anxious, with reports that the Black Kings have arrived along with some good info on the Trevally. The Black Kings are taking poppers and plastics, take your pick whatever works on the day. Some schools of Spanish Mackerel and Tuna have also been reported. Will try to bring you up-to-date in the next issue, as you will understand, last month has been a bit hit and miss, with most of my spies not fishing. I have included a couple of photos from the archives to show that girls also catch some good fish. Tech Talk & Tips Hope everyone is managing okay? The past few months have been horrendous; a lot of people have lost everything, including their computers. AMS Computers donates approximately 60 to 70 second-hand computers every month to Wide Bay Volunteers, they do some of them up and donate them to the needy. It was during this time that they have donated a lot to the flood victims, for this they should be congratulated. AMS Computers is glad that they have been able to help this very worthy cause over the past few years. Mathew and Steve, owners of AMS Computers, are also going to donate a brand new computer to a worthy group of volunteers, who bring a lot of joy and happiness to lots of children, and adult kids too; they too have been severely affected by the floods “watch this space”. Toby writes: “For the last 6 weeks my computer has been getting harder and harder to start up, sometimes it will take three goes to get into windows and it is very sluggish when it does run. Can you tell me why this would be, as I am worried one day it just won’t turn on?” Toby, the problem you are describing could be as innocent as the computer just being overdue for a clean and service or it could be a serious hardware issue such as a failing hard drive. If it is the hard drive failing, delay in getting it checked can be the difference between saving all your data and losing some, or all of it. All computers will have their moments such as not starting up correctly when we turn them on and most times if we choose the last known configuration option it solves the issue, however, if it continues to happen it needs to be thoroughly checked by a computer technician. So Toby my answer to you would be to take it to your computer service centre and ask them to give it a thorough check up and test the health of your hard drive and have the hardware cleaned and the software serviced before it’s too late. Everyone’s computer should be cleaned and serviced every six to eight months, an excessively slow PC may well indicate, and most time does indicate, that the hard drive is failing, so the sooner you get on top of it the easier it is to fix. The only fix programs you should have on your PC are Malware Bytes, C/cleaner and your preferred anti-virus, I myself plus AMS Computers recommend, Avast, which is a very good “free” anti-virus and Kaspersky for the paid one. Kaspersky covers you if you do internet monetary transactions or online banking. Brenda asks how to attach photos to emails in Windows Live Mail? - Open up Windows Live Mail and click on new message. Put in the email address of the person who you
are sending the message to and the click on the paper clip that says attach file, locate the file that you wish to, attach and click open. Your file has now been attached and you can repeat these steps until you have attached all the files that you wish to attach. Michael says he is having trouble watching some movies and videos plus some email attachments. So if you are having trouble watching movies or videos etc, on your computer using Windows media player. A good program to download is VLC media player, just Google it and do the free download, this media player, Michael, will play 99% of your movies, files and all music. Since the floods a few people have stated that they have been unable, or found it hard to get to AMS Computers to get their computers looked at, I know that AMS has been absolutely flat out getting businesses up and running again, whilst still looking after all their other customers, plus doing insurance quotes etc. It’s a credit to AMS Computers as they have worked hard to keep the repair times down to three days, but they do have four and sometimes five highly qualified technicians working in Bundaberg’s largest, most modern upto-date workshop which helps. I still hear it from some people; my friend next door looked at it he knows a “bit” about computers he’s a bit of an “expert” or a mate put me on to this bloke he works from his shed!! These are a NO, NO! AMS Computers see so many computers that have been messed with by people without qualifications, that have been further damaged all the time, this then costs you, the customer, a lot more money to put right. If a flyer shows up in your letter box, or you see an advertisement without a home phone number, or it’s a private address ignore it, especially adverts which say “no fix-no fee” or call out fee just $90, whether it takes 10 minutes or 10 hours. AMS Computers does at least eight call outs a day and fixes most computers under an hour at a cost of $50 for a local area, not $90, any qualified technician should only take an hour per computer to fix, maximum. Just a reminder, computers suck in air to keep them cool, this brings in dust, it rains, the air is damp, the dust absorbs the damp air, result is problems. Take it to AMS Computers they still have their special on saving 33% off the normal price. Better be quick though as this special may shortly be finishing. For just $45 you get your computer cleaned, dusted, hardware removed and replaced and all your unwanted, unnecessary rubbish removed, resulting in a cleaner, faster computer, now that’s a bargain.

Now is a good time for growing vegies in Bundy. Get your garden beds ready and have a go. There is nothing like your own home fresh vegies and the satisfaction of making a meal that you have grown the ingredients yourself. Everyone has their favourite ways to grow their vegies and there are lots. Some of our staff here at Bundy Wholesale Palms and Plants, who love growing vegies, grouped together some of their growing tips. • Choose a location in your yard where your vegetable garden will get the sun for at least six hours per day. Preferably protected from strong winds and a northerly aspect should ensure that your garden receives the winter sun. • Set up for easy access. Make a raised garden bed if you have difficulty getting up and down. Old water tanks or sleeper beds are great for this. Make a path for easy access and remember your garden should be no wider than it is possible for you to reach in or across to pick your produce. • Use heaps of organic matter – ‘all-in-one’ is an excellent product for adding to your soil. • Mulch heavily with Lucerne hay or sugar cane mulch. • Grow carrots from seed. Sow sparingly in a shallow furrow and cover lightly. Don’t transplant and only thin out as you use them. • Plant small crops in succession so you always have a variety reaching maturity at ongoing stages, therefore extending your picking time. • Seasol, Seasol and more Seasol...Especially at planting time to give your seedlings the boost they need to start and then Powerfeed for fruit and Vegies. • Plant garlic now for a beaut spring crop. When planting garlic, leave the paper skin on the bulb. • Put a cover of plastic approx 30cm high around you patch of celery to force longer stalks. • All vegetable gardens will attract the bugs, so be prepared with a spray to combat this. We recommend and use ourselves, Beat a Bug, Pest Oil or Natra soap • Remove all excess leaves off tomatoes. • Concrete Pool • Some tried and true varieties of vegetables Construction are the tomato ‘Grosse Lisse’ for a full tomato, cherry tomatoes for easy care, Mignonette • Concreting lettuce and Silverbeet ‘Fordhook’ giants. • And the best tip of all is to visit your garden • Fencing on a daily basis to keep an eye on what is • Shades happening and potter around for healthy • Free Quotes plants. RECIPES OF THE MONTH Ingredients:
Romantic Dinner For Two Oysters with Champagne Sauce
1 dozen natural oysters, in the half shell 125ml champagne or sparkling white wine 1 French shallot (eschalot), finely chopped 125ml thickened cream
Method:
Freshly ground white pepper Rock salt, to serve Chopped fresh chives
1. Place the champagne and shallot in a saucepan over medium heat and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium low and simmer 3-4 minutes or until reduced by half. 2. Add the cream and season with pepper. Simmer for 3-4 minutes or until sauce is thick and creamy. 3. Preheat grill on high. Scatter rock salt over the base of 2 small heatproof dishes. Arrange oysters on rock salt. 4. Pour the cream mixture evenly among the oysters. Cook under grill for 1-2 minutes or until golden. 5. Set aside for 2 minutes to cool slightly. Sprinkle with chives to serve.
Ingredients:
Crispy Skin Salmon
4 (200g each) salmon fillets, skin on 2 Tablespoons of oil 1 teaspoon of sea salt Steamed chat potatoes and salad leaves to serve
Method:
1. Place salmon, skin side up, on a plate. Drizzle with oil. Rub salt into skin. 2. Heat a large, non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add salmon skin side down. Cook 4 to 5 minutes or until skin is crisp. 3. Cook covered for a further 4 to 5 minutes for medium or until cooked to your liking. 4. Serve with potatoes and salad leaves.
Ingredients:
Chocolate Strawberries
750g large strawberries, washed & dried 150g milk chocolate 150g dark chocolate 150g white chocolate
Method:
1. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Break milk chocolate into even pieces. Place into a heat proof bowl. 2. One third fill a saucepan with water. Bring to the boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low. Place chocolate bowl over saucepan (don’t let bowl touch water). Stir with a metal spoon until smooth. 3. Dip a third of the strawberries into chocolate. Place onto tray. Repeat with dark and white chocolate. Refrigerate until set.
