Providing a short-term break with long-term benefits

Since opening its doors to the community in 1989, hundreds of locals have benefited from the many valuable services of the Gracie Dixon Respite Centre. Gracie Dixon Respite Centre is a leader in the provision of centre based day respite by providing a service where everyone is uniquely valued and treated with dignity and respect. The centre also is constantly expanding and enhancing its programs to meet members’ needs in maintaining activities of daily living, social interaction and personal interests. Not only does the centre provide a service to members, it also plays a role in supporting family and friends and their needs. Staff and volunteers at Gracie Dixon Respite Centre offer centre based services and activities Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm. These services include: • Morning tea and a two course midday meal • A quality activities program which includes music, concerts, quizzes, cards, exercises, outings, barbecues, lunches and morning teas. • Hairdressing • Qualified staff and volunteers • A resource library • Information on and assistance with accessing other services • Equipment loans Gracie Dixon Respite Centre also holds a Men’s Group on Fridays, social support outings on Saturdays and a social support phoning service Monday to Friday. A day respite service is also available in Bargara, held every Thursday, 9.30am to 1.30pm, at the Uniting Church, Hughes Road. Members are provided with morning tea, a light lunch, quality activities and information by qualified staff and volunteers. With its mission in assisting community members to maintain activities of daily living and social interaction, Gracie Dixon Respite Centre holds a Dementia Café on the second Wednesday of each month at Café 1928 in the Botanic Gardens from 9.30am to 11.30am. The café is a great place for dementia sufferers, their carers and other members of the community to learn about the illness. This is a free service and transport is available. The Gracie Dixon Respite Centre is operated by Bundaberg Regional Council and funded by the Home and Community Care Program (HACC); however more funding is always needed. To help raise money the centre holds an annual Cent Sale. This year’s Cent Sale is bigger and better than previous years with more than $5,500 in prizes on offer and will be held on Saturday, August 31 at the Bundaberg Civic Centre. Doors open at 11.30am for a 1pm start. Entry of $3 includes afternoon tea and a lucky door prize of a weekend stay at the Brisbane Marriott - 2 night stay for 2 people, including buffet breakfast. If you would like to find out more about the great services offered at Gracie Dixon Respite Centre or would like to book a table at the cent sale, phone the centre coordinator, Lyn Acquasanta on 4130 4120 or visit the centre at 45 Woondooma Street (next to the library).
