TESTIMONIAL
“I have been in business since 1987 during which time I have spent many dollars advertising. I must say that the amount of customers saying: “We saw your add in Tradies and Ladies” is terrific. This is the second time we have been on the front cover and the response we get is amazing.”

LOCAL NEWS Subsidies offered for pet micro-chipping Tell us your story. Ph: 0488 754 816
Keeping track of your four-legged friend will be more affordable next month when Bundaberg Regional Council offers subsidised micro-chipping in partnership with National Pet Register. Residents will pay just $15 per pet to microchip their cats and dogs when they attend Council’s micro-chipping and information days on August 17 at Jay Teens Park, Bargara (near the Nielson Park skate bowl) and August 18 at Alexandra Park, Bundaberg. Council’s Health and Regulatory Services portfolio spokesperson, Cr Wayne Honor, encouraged residents to take advantage of the discounted service made possible thanks to National Pet Register providing micro-chipping for $25 per pet which Council will further subsidise by $10. “I would encourage pet owners within the region to capitalise on the opportunity to help ensure the safety of their cat or dog for a one-off cost of only $15,” Cr Honor said. “As part of the process owners will also be required to register their pets which will ensure Council can assist with the safe return of any lost animals.” He said the day would also feature information
stalls from Council and local businesses. Bookings for micro-chipping are essential and must be made before the event to receive the full discount by visiting: www.petregister.com.au/events or by phoning 1300 734 738. Anyone presenting on the day without a booking will receive discounted micro-chipping for $20 per pet.

LOCAL NEWS Flying Fox issue resolved at Botanic Gardens Tell us your story. Ph: 0488 754 816
A Flying Fox colony roosting in the Botanic Gardens has now joined an existing colony located at McCoy’s Creek. Council’s Environment and Natural Resources portfolio spokesperson Cr Danny Rowleson said Council had obtained a Damage Mitigation Permit to actively disperse the colony in the gardens, however this action had not been required. “Council staff had begun initial dispersal works which involved removing general debris from the area but that, coupled with a few steam train test runs, disturbed them enough that they relocated without any further prompting,” Cr Rowleson said. “I’m sure this will be welcome news to residents in the area who have, on numerous occasions, expressed concerns to Council about the proximity of the Flying Foxes to their homes and the closure of part of the Botanic Gardens.” He said Council expected the colony’s move to the location at McCoy’s Creek would have minimal impact at that roost site.
Council’s Health and Regulatory Services portfolio spokesperson Cr Wayne Honor said it was welcome news that all areas of the Botanic Gardens were now open to foot traffic. “It is also hoped the Australian Sugar Cane Railway will commence regular operations in the not too distance future following successful test runs of both the diesel and steam engines,” Cr Honor said.

HEALTHY MIND David Lawson - Helping you to Find the Light!
What do you do when you want two different things but can have only one of them? When you and your spouse make a decision, one of you (or both) always wants it their way? If you are experiencing this then you are probably in a Two Choice Dilemma. A “two-choice dilemma” occurs when you want two choices to occur at once, but only one choice can happen. When a decision is made I must get my way or I must concede to the other but in doing so I ignore the consequences of that choice. Examples are: • I want my relationship to be more loving but am not prepared to do the things my spouse likes. • I expect the house to be tidy but do not help to keep it clean. • My spouse should be sexier but I don’t help them to feel sexy. • My spouse never listens to what I say so I ignore them until they listen or raise my voice until they do listen. • I want my spouse to initiate sex but they have to do it the way I want it. • My spouse (when pushed) shares how they are feeling but I don’t like what they say. • When we argue, one of us walks out and does not talk for days or weeks afterwards. • Rather than stopping for a toilet/coffee break the driver just keeps driving. • I will change as long as you change first. • I will just make the decision and you will just have to agree with it. You can avoid that these things exist and continue the way you are OR you can come and learn how to confront your dilemma and create healthyspace for both of you. Your relationship will never improve until you learn how to overcome your two choice dilemmas! Talking to someone outside of the problem often makes it easier to resolve the problem!

Tell us your story. LOCAL HISTORY Ph: 0488 754 816 Step back in time - The Skyway Drive-in
Remember when the kids could be bundled up in pyjamas in the back seat, you could smuggle your mates in, in the boot of the car and if the movie was lousy, it didn’t really matter? It was just a great night out for friends and family at the Skyway Drive-in. Bundaberg’s Skyway Drive-in opened on Wednesday, November 25 in 1959. Situated on 21 acres of former bushland, near the corner of Maynard and Fitzgerald Street, the Skyway took only 7 weeks to build at a cost of between $140,000 and $160,000. It was claimed to be one of the best built in Australia. The Drive-in boasted a screen which measured 81 feet wide and 55 feet from the ground. This huge screen had been designed to accommodate all types of films, including Cinemascope and wide screen. There was enough room for 300 vehicles to have a clear uninterrupted view of the screen. Patrons of the Drive-in were shown where to park by smartly dressed car directors. Once in position, state-of-theart speakers could be placed in the car window. The speakers were fitted with volume control and a signal switch for service. Patrons could use this switch to call an attendant for requirements from the snack bar or to have their windows cleaned. Mr Reg Hunt was managing director of the Skyway. Mr Hunt was a former Brisbane resident who had been involved with cinema for 25 years. During the previous five years, Mr Hunt had made a study of drive-ins overseas and had personally planned the layout for a Brisbane suburban drive-in. On the night of November 25, 1959 the Skyway Drive-in celebrated its grand opening by screening the opening attractions, “The Magnificent Matador” with Maureen O’Hara ad Anthony Quinn and “Mystery Lake” starring George Fenneman and Gloria McGough. Mayor, C J Nielsen officially opened the new modern entertainment venue in front of a capacity crowd. But it wasn’t just about the movies. There was a free Kiddyland Playground with Shetland pony rides, slippery dips, see-saws and swinging boats; a free baby bottle warming service and dining where movie goers could have a snack or a full meal. In 1966 Birch Carroll and Coyle purchased the Skyway and operated it until 1985, when it was sold to a local syndicate comprising Peter Sawyer, Paul Neville, Ron Hancock, Neville Loxton and Steven Brennan. The Skyway operated until 1989, due to low profits was closed on Sunday, March 26 with a dusk to dawn program, which included the movies: Who framed Roger Rabbit, Big Business, Cocktail and Good Morning Vietnam. The land was later subdivided for residential housing.

MONTHLY FISHING UPDATE
Let’s hope the month of August is better than July was with all the winds etc. it was a challenge to get offshore even for the bigger boats, those that were able to venture out got rewarded with some good catches, but they did have to go way out to get them. This time of the year, and with the cold snaps we are having, should bring the Snapper Mackerel, Tuna etc. and bait fish right along our coast line. With the latter bringing the pelagic into striking range, but as yet that is not going to plan. August has the potential to be a bumper month if things go to plan. The Bream are here in big numbers and, I am glad to say, in size too. In the Burnett, fish up the river on the town side and up towards the Barrage north side also drift along the rock wall from the Port. Best baits are Mullet gut, Mullet strips, chopped prawns, and yabbies. One big tip is to fish very early mornings and late up to and after dark. Late afternoons/evening fish under the old traffic bridge the bridge lights attract Bream and some big ones have been landed here. In the Baffle, fish up the river near the Ferry Crossing same baits; this also goes for the Kolan, Elliott, and Burrum. Some good whiting are also being landed on the incoming tide; best baits here are sand Young Jacob Rowland caught worm, artificial worm, squid arms, chopped prawns and yabbies. Fish over sand banks and any this Queenie on a chrome slug just off Burnett Heads, Weight yabby beds; here you will be guided by the tides. Bream and Whiting can also be taken on extremely small lures. I like one called Pumpkin 14Lbs, 1.3mtrs long and 30 minutes to land, he said it seed it gives me a good strike rate and the fish are a good size. tasted “yummy”. If it’s flathead you are after, they are a bit scarce at the moment, but you will catch them if you fish the shallows early morning again as they will be waiting for a feed of Whiting and anything else that passes by. I can’t help myself every time I catch a Flathead around 60 to 70cm I look in its stomach to see what it is eating and every time without fail the stomach contained what is in high volume in the river be it Poddy mullet, Sprat, Hardy Heads or Whiting that is what a Flathead ambushes, that is why I love a cast net. My cast net tells me what a Flathead is eating and that bait will catch me a Flathead feed. Don’t worry if you can’t throw a cast net just email:editor@tradiesandladies.com.au and I will send you a FREE video, even your wife will be able to throw a cast net for you. Barra are being caught in the Baffle, Elliott, and Kolan, and Burrum you will need to be patient and spend some time casting to the snags, fallen trees and near runoffs. Watch out in the Burrum as there are lots of sandbanks and Rock Bars and it is easy to get stranded so watch the tides. Also, a good river plastic is a 4” Z Man in red shad with a 1/4oz sinker on a 4.0hook, a red Shad Is Red and Green, remember with Barra your plastic lure can change from day to day so always keep a few handy. I love the old favourite in the dams the Gold 5” Bomber, and so do lots of others I have met, but some days the fish just won’t play along. Chopper Tailer are showing up at most river mouths so keep Freedom To Be Mobile an eye open. Small metal slugs or Spoons should do the trick, or if you have them on board, QF Pilchards on a 3 gang hook. Providing services to the general Most of the dams have been a lot slower due to the cold public and the Medical Aids weather as I said in the last issue, fish the shallows for Barra early morning, try trolling the weed beds with an electric motor, Subsidy Scheme also try the bays off the main channel such as Insane Bay, Jacks and the arm off B they are all worth exploring. Try hard Selling, servicing bodies like the Gold Bomber, Halco Hamma. The Bass are all schooling up in the middle so you will have to sound for them, and maintaining a variety of spinners might entice them to eat so good luck. The next meeting of the Bundaberg Sports Fishing Club is most makes of on Sunday, August 11 at 3pm at Burnett Heads Community mobility aids, Hall, Zunker Street. Visitors and new members always welcomed. scooters

Tech Talk & Tips I thought this month I would start off by giving you a few tips on different things that you may find useful and answer some of the questions that some of you are having trouble with. First up I had a message from Jane at Bargara, “I have a message that says my firewall is disabled”. Jane this is what you do, first. To enable your windows firewall in Windows 7, you click start, then, go to control panel. At the bottom of the list you will see windows, firewall click on this and another box will open up. On the left hand side you will be able to click on “turn on or off windows firewall “click this to on and check one, not both active options are enabled, this should fix your problems, and put your mind at rest “My friends have a signature at the bottom of their emails,” asks Mike. “I was just wondering if you could possibly tell me how I could, or would be able do that.” Well Mike, in Windows Live Mail you just click menus, then click options, then a box (window) will open, click on the signatures tab, next click on new, this will open a box where you type the signature wording you wish to use. Choose a font that resembles your hand writing from the font list at the top left hand side and type it into the box, then just click rename, then click on enter and click ok. Create a new message, in the message area move the cursor to the position you want the signature to appear, click menus then click insert signature then you have a signature to add to your emails. To make the signature appear on all the outgoing emails you create, click the signatures tab again and click the option “add signatures to all outgoing mail”. You could also have them appear on all replies and forwards if you wanted by removing the tick in the option “don’t add signatures to replies and forwards”. I have a fair few enquiries about clocks on desk tops, it seems many people like desktop clocks as a wall paper, so for the many people who have asked me in the last few weeks especially Kerry this is what you do. Kerry asks, “How do I make a clock appear on my desktop permanently (not the time in the right-hand corner)?” Kerry this is very simple just right click on your desktop then click gadgets. The gadgets gallery will appear then
double click on the clock, and Windows 7 will add it to your desktop. If you decide you no longer want it you just place the mouse over the clock and a gadget control will appear and you click the remove button, how simple is that Ken wrote in worried that he is being inundated with junk and pop up’s etc. Ken said, “I am using Windows Live Mail and am getting a lot of junk can I do something to stop it?” Ken here is what you must do, to set the protection level for junk email just click on menus, top right hand side, then click safety options, next click the options tab, click the protection level you require switch to high if you are receiving a large number of junk mails each day. If you find that mail you want to keep has been sent to the junk folder just click on the message and click ”not junk” Windows will then return it to your in box. I would suggest checking your junk folder each day and once you are happy that there is nothing there that you want, empty the folder. Remember to cull your email account folders regularly to have your email account operating at peak performance. Don’t become an email hoarder, if you have things you want to keep, copy and paste them to a word document and store them in My Documents, you can then delete the email. Lastly, I would like to say that judging by the responses I got from last month’s scam repairs that many of you had been caught by. So I would just like to ask, how many of you fully understand the workings or repair side of computers? Unscrupulous, so called, repair shops or back yard repairers (they are the worst) take full advantage of the fact that you, the customer, do not know or understand what fault your computer has. For example it will not switch on and just “beeps” this could be a ram reseat, not a $150 costly unnecessary format and install, when probably only a five minute Ram reseat was actually done. Two of the biggest tips I could give you is to get a clean and service done at AMS Computers at the ridiculous price of just $45 and use AMS Computers for your repairs 90% of their repair work comes from recommendations. NOW that has to tell you something, that’s why they are the No1 Independent computers repair shop in the Wide Bay.

LOCAL NEWS
Celebrating peace and harmony in our region
The Bundaberg Rotary Sunrise Club is proud to bring to you their premier event, the Bundaberg Multicultural Festival. Established in 1991, the festival continues to grow from strength to strength celebrating peace and harmony through the wonderful diversity of our community. The Bundaberg region is built on immigration with many people having migrated to the area over the generations, originally growing tobacco followed by sugar cane and more recently diversifying into small crops and orchards, both fruit and nuts. With such a strong migrant history supported by a large contingent of backpackers from all round the world who harvest much of the fruit, nuts and vegetables the annual Bundaberg Multicultural Festival is certainly a time to celebrate. The festival brings a quality mix of culinary delights and unique sounds from around the world ensuring you find something to satisfy your appetite as well as entertaining you for hours on end. The festival will be held on Sunday, August 18
at Riverside Parklands, Quay Street. Come and enjoy a full day’s entertainment provided across five different stages with acts from a wide variety of cultures and countries. Whilst you’re enjoying the tremendous array of entertainment, why not try the glorious food on offer from all corners of the world. There is something for every member of the family from young ones touching the baby animals or enjoying the rides and slides, to older members of the family sitting back and listening to a jazz band or watching the Chinese Lions. The event will begin at 9am and conclude at 4pm. Entry is $5 with children under 12 free.
