Chance to spread joy to kids in care this Christmas

Queenslanders are being asked to help bring a smile to the faces of more than 8,300 abused or neglected Queensland children living away from home this Christmas. More than 250 gifts have already been donated towards the Kids in Care Christmas Appeal and Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett has urged people to embrace the Christmas spirit and donate a present. Presents need to be suitable for a child aged 0 to 17 years. People can make their donation at their local Harvey Norman store at 125 Takalvan Street, Bundaberg. “Christmas can be an emotional time for children living away from home and the reality of their situation can hit hard for some,” Mr Bennett said. “However, receiving a gift can brighten their day and let them know that people really do care about them.” “Presents like gift cards, sporting equipment, board games, clothes and books can keep on giving during the Christmas holiday season. “It’s great to see that gifts are already coming

in and I thank people for their generosity,” Mr Bennett said. The appeal runs until December 14. Any surplus toys will be distributed to other children who are known to Child Safety. For further information visit: www.communities. qld.gov.au/childsafetyprogram.

HEALTHY MIND David Lawson - Helping you to Find the Light!

We all have times when we need to talk with a person who really listens to us, someone outside our family or social circle - someone “outside” the problem. Someone non-judgmental, keeping your confidence, showing compassion, respect and understanding. Hi! My name is David Lawson and I started my working life as a farmer and later worked for many years as a fully qualified Financial Counsellor in Bundaberg. Five years ago I trained as a Generalist Counsellor and earlier this year attained the highest level of membership (Clinical) of my Professional Counselling Association (involving a minimum of 1,000 hours of counselling clients and 100 hours of supervision). I have completed a Graduate Certificate in Couple Counselling and am currently working towards a Master of Counselling. Finding The Light Counselling was born from a desire to walk more closely with clients - to go at their speed and to incorporate a client’s spirituality into the counselling process if they wish. Whether you are an Atheist, Agnostic, Buddhist, Muslim, Jew, Christian, or have a Spirit Guide, I will incorporate your belief system into the counselling process when you - the client - ask me to. For many years I have trained Crisis Line counsellors in Suicide Intervention. I am an ASIST Master Trainer and am available to conduct group training in this important area. If there are any topics you would like me to cover in future articles please email me at: findingthelight@bigpond.com Sometimes just getting to make the call to see a counsellor can be a big step. To help overcome that initial step I offer a free and confidential 30 minute phone or face-to-face meeting to discuss how I can help you. Call me on 4152 7733 or 0407 585 497.

MONTHLY FISHING UPDATE

Q

At last the water is warming up, this has, over the last few weeks, improved the catches. Mangrove Jacks have certainly come on the bite, with good sized fish caught in and around Fallons Rocks and down river to the Black Bank in the Elliot River. Lots of good fish have also been caught in Baffle Creek from the north side at Flat Rock (opposite Colonial Cove) at all the rock bars and any snags up to and including the Ferry Crossing. The Baffle is on Fire, best baits are livies, orange plastics, 120mm (5 inch) or multi-coloured Halco deep divers. A new plastic prawn has also been the downfall of some big Jacks and is also fairly snag proof, which is what you need round snags it’s called a Zereck from memory, I have not used it yet but will be getting a few this week to try, but by all accounts they are dynamite on Jacks and Salmon. Mangrove Jack run back to their cover as soon as they hit your bait so you have to be on the ball, your drag needs to be spot on and firm, I set my drag by tying a water bottle to my Rod and Line, put it in the rod holder and slowly fill the bottle with water, I then slowly release the drag till the bottle slowly falls. In the Burnett there is still a few Salmon about, but they are in the upper reaches and you will need fresh large prawns. There is Mangrove Jack at the back of the Mill, also near the hot water outlet, up around the bridges and in the deeper waters near the barrage. In most rivers the bread and butter fish are on the chew. Some good Bream are about, Summer Whiting plus a real good run of the popular Flathead, although the sizes have started to drop on the Flathead this month with just a few large fish captured. The big Flathead will start to appear again around the end of January as they start to school up to move out to sea and deeper water. “I’ve caught Flathead all year round I hear you say,’’ and that’s true, but for half of the year they are very scarce and hard to find, whereas in September, October and November the strike rate soars, then slows then picks up again at the end of January through February then drops right off. Best baits are livies, yabbies and fresh prawns. As for lures I reckon it’s up to the individual taste, I will say that the winning team at the Flathead Classic on the Gold Coast all used Micro Mullet pink and green being the most successful. These small lures accounted for nearly half the capture for the two-and-a-half days. When you consider that 434 anglers caught 4,918 Flathead during the classic just shows how good the Micro Mullet is. Mud Crabs are about so don’t forget your pots. The dams are starting to pick up, although the Barra are still a bit on the small side with just the odd trophy Barra making an appearance. Monduran is firing at the moment with plenty of Barramundi in the 60 to 70mm about. Live bait is working, but, as I stated in a previous edition, the

The one that got away!

Reon & Ruth

Gold Bombers, is the lure of choice. Soft plastics in orange are also working as are the artificial shrimps, but nothing is touching the ever faithful Gold Bomber. On your way out to Monduran Dam call into Foxies Tackle shop in Gin Gin and get the low down on the dam and baits and pick yourself up a Barra Lure Pak they are good value. With all the little inlets Monduran Dam is a great day out and only a short drive (don’t forget your permit). Bass are biting but I would suggest only fish for these at dawn or dusk, my favourite lure is the Sure Catch surface popper, work with small quick jerks. Good Yellow Belly are about in the timbers, the best bait is live bait so take a trap with you. As this is the last article for 2012 I would like to wish you and your friends and families a very Happy Christmas, stay safe on the water and I hope to be with you all again in 2013.

Another great Flathead caught at the 2012 Flathead Classic.

REAL ESTATE ADVICE Your monthly Real Estate Advice by Melissa at Bundaberg Property Gallery Why work with professionals who are continually wanting to learn!

I am fortunate to be in an office that continues to grow in mind set. We have a collection of books to read and CDs for the car that fills our world with learning. On a recent trip to Brisbane for a business coaching course, I decided to take my 16-yearold son and trade a day off school with a day of hopeful future enlightenment. At three o’clock in the morning, when we left, he plugged his earphones in as mum tuned into Brian Tracy the Art of Self Discipline. Described to me earlier in the week by my daughter as, “listening to this is like being at school”. It dawned on me at that moment, that to my teenage children, “like being at school”, meant, you learn because you are made to, not because you want to. When you leave school you finally understand the importance of learning. After a full day with elite business coaches, engaged and being treated as an adult, on the car trip home....Brian Tracey was surprisingly not as boring as one first thought to my teenage passenger. Why? Because he now understood the VALUE of learning. To be the best, you must think like the best and surround yourself with the best! I thought about something I heard the other morning while driving to work on one of Brian Tracey’s CDs... “It’s not how far you fall, but how high you can bounce”.... I love this! This is so true, we all fall, some much harder than others ... but if we bounce back as high as we can, then falling was a thing of the past. What we think at the time is a disaster, is really a learning experience to reflect on. I think it’s important to show your worth to a client. Many of my clients become my friends. When you work so closely with someone on possibly one of the biggest purchases or sales of their life, you want to make sure you treat them as if you were buying or selling your own mum’s or closest friend’s house. I have been really enjoying the “giving” that comes with this industry. Now with my exclusive clients, not only can I enjoy the look on their faces when I say, no you don’t have to pay for advertising, no you don’t have to have tyre kickers looking through your home on weekends, yes you can call seven days a week because our office is open, my new service is professional photographs paid by myself. Lastly, when you give from a good place, you will get back tenfold, so we should all take the time to “give” in our daily life, whether it be a kind word or an act of generosity, when you give your life will become fruitful and filled with people you admire and who admire you. Join us on the 4th of December to learn more about budgeting at 6pm. Call Melissa on 0428 968 832 or email: reception@bundabergpropertygallery.com.au I am happy to organise an information evening around a topic you wish to learn more about and engage professionals to answer all of your questions! This is a complimentary service. Thank you!

HEALTH ADVICE Naturopathic Information by Rebecca Lang BHSc (Comp Med) HAIR TESTING FOR FOODS THAT ARE CAUSING INFLAMMATION Are you reacting to various food items but you can’t pin point which ones? Have you been tested for allergies but nothing showed up with medical testing? Are you suffering from bloating, nausea, discomfort after eating, diarrhoea, constipation, hay fever, skin issues, mood swings etc? Do you have a child with behavioural issues or is continually getting sick? Does your body seem to be very sensitive to everything? Many people have heard of hair testing for mineral analysis and some people have been tested through hair for approximately 10 food items. These may be wheat, gluten, dairy, eggs etc.. At Bargara Beach Holistic Health Centre, we have access to hair testing that will test if your body is reacting to 400 different foods and household items. These are normal foods that you will buy from the supermarket. It also tests some natural medicines such as fish oils and probiotics. For an additional fee we can also test current vitamins that you are taking. The test also includes some items such as toothpastes, shampoos, soaps, cleaning agents, sun creams etc. This test will also pin point items. You may have been told it is best for you not to have wheat and gluten. Unless you have been tested medically for this there may be some items you can have. For example, you may not be able to have pasta but could be okay with some breads. Gluten free food is also tested as some people on a gluten free diet may even be reacting to certain gluten free foods. You do not necessarily require an appointment to have the hair testing done. An application form can be sent to you and returned back to Bargara Beach Holistic Health Centre with a small hair sample and payment. Coloured or permed hair can still be tested. The 16 page report will be emailed or posted to you, usually within 10 days. This form of Hair Testing costs $227 and credit card facilities are available. REIKI COURSES Reiki is an Ancient Japanese form of Healing that has been passed down over time through Healers. It is not as well known in QLD as it is in other states and overseas. Reiki is hands on healing. The patient is fully clothed and lies on a massage table. The Practitioner will channel universal energy through their body and out through their hands which are placed gently on the patient. Most people will feel heat and warmth and a deep feeling of inner peace. This is a very relaxing and nurturing form of healing where the Practitioner stays with the

patient for the whole time. It will assist with healing of Body, Mind and Spirit. It will assist in reducing pain and discomfort in the body. It will help with reducing stress and anxiety. At Bargara Beach Holistic Health Centre not only do we do Reiki Treatments but we also teach others how to do it so you can use it for your family and friends. This is a certified course which allows others to also use it in a clinic setting. During December, January and February Rebecca Lang Reiki Master (Teacher) and Naturopath will be conducting Reiki Workshops. Some of these will be for groups of 10 and others will be small groups of 2 to 4 people. Workshops will be held at various times during the week and weekends depending on numbers and availabilities. REIKI 1 $150 - self healing and healing of others REIKI 2 $150 - distant healing and ancient symbols are provided REIKI 3 $250 - learn to teach Reiki to others and hold your own workshops Most courses will take 4 to 5 hours depending on the size of the group. Ring today and book yourself in, numbers will be limited. Roof Top Solar Too Late?

We have noticed lately that most people making enquiries in regard to roof top solar are of the opinion that they are too late. Is this actually the case? In short, my answer would be probably not. Many factors come into consideration when considering the economic value to the average customer. I guess that depends on whether you call yourself an average customer. To give a simple answer to the question, if you were to apply to Ergon under the 8 cent feed in tariff scheme, fitted the correct size system for your needs, made an attempt to decrease your night time energy consumption i.e. LED lights, your economic benefits would be the same as it would have been if you had installed a similar sized system twelve months ago under the 44 cent scheme. I know that this may be a little difficult to believe or comprehend however, we have done the sums and the maths makes sense. To help explain this, consider that in the last twelve months power costs have risen 18 to 20% and the cost of Solar installs has fallen significantly. These factors, plus the use of power saving techniques and devices, still mean that you can all but eliminate your ever increasing power bills. Government rebates are still in effect which also add to the positive economic outcome. One thing that is often overlooked, and unfortunately of late, discounted by the Black Power Brigade, is the environmental benefits of solar power. Remember, that for every kilowatt of energy you use that is produced by solar, approximately 20 kilograms of carbon dioxide is NOT pumped into the atmosphere. Unfortunately the coal barons and politicians who support them have scant regard for the environment or ecological impacts. Send them a message and Go Solar. If you have any questions at all about this concept, please do not hesitate to contact us for a full explanation.

MANAGING GRIEF AT CHRISTMAS Christmas may be a time when you get together with family and friends. Often when you have lost someone you love, you are reminded sometimes by the smallest of things that they are not around. This may be hard and everyone reacts differently to this. It may be that it causes people to react more sensitively to things. Everyone has their own way of coping. It is important that you look after yourself and have your way of getting through the hard bits. Here are some ideas that may help you better manage the Christmas holidays. ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING AT ITS

BEST

Make the most of outdoors this summer Today, our outdoor areas are more like an extension of the home and often used for entertaining and relaxing. To make this space functional and practical, some of your needs may include outdoor audio, ceiling fans, weatherproof switches and outdoor lighting. This will ensure that you can safely power up party lights and mozzie zapper and enjoy more of the great outdoors. Some safe and convenient outdoor solutions that may suit you include: Weatherproof Outdoor Power Points Avoid running extension leads through doorways and install a weatherproof power outlet in your outdoor area. Infrascan Outdoor Motion Sensor Passive infrared sensors give you the convenience of turning lights on and off when you enter an area and sense when you leave. You’ll save energy by never leaving the lights on again Weatherproof Fluorescent Lights These energy efficient fluorescent light fittings are ideal for outdoor areas that require substantial illumination, while offering the additional benefit of complete weather protection.

16

Exterior Lights Available in low voltage halogen or energy efficient CFLs, these stylish stainless steel lights are perfect for use by the pool or feature area of the backyard. Ceiling Sweep Fan During those hot Aussie summers there is no need to stay indoors with air-conditioning on. A ceiling sweep fan is a great way to stay cool outside whilst entertaining friends. A remote control adds extra convenience. Security Camera Protect your home from intruders or keep an eye on the kids while they’re playing outside. Outdoor Audio Distribution Mounted speakers are perfect for listening to music outside without having speaker cables running all over the floor or ground. Pool/Spa Timer Switches Pool and spa timer switches offer energy savings and convenience throughout the year. They can be easily programmed, around frequency of use to suit the season. To help you make the most of outdoors this summer, see the friendly experienced team at Haymans Electrical at 26 Burrum Street or give them a call on 4152 2755.

Tech Talk & Tips Not much longer now before the bloke in the Red Suit appears, hope you all get what you want, and want what you get. A lot of you will be getting new computers for yourselves, and/or for your children this Christmas, please be aware that the cheapies, or for that matter any computer you purchase from the big multi-franchised stores, plus most other computer stores in, and around, Bundaberg, do “NOT” come set up for use. From the time they are manufactured, the first time they see daylight is when you wake up on Christmas day and pull them out of their box. Now unless you are computer literate, a new computer set up is not an easy thing to achieve. The last thing you want to be doing all Christmas is pulling your hair out, trying to set up a new computer, burn recovery discs, remove promotional programs, do updates etc.,etc.,etc. It takes a trained technician up to two hours to set up a new computer and they do it every day. All is not lost however, AMS Computers sell their computers, towers and laptops, fully set up with programs installed, promotional material deleted, all the backups are done and they also do transfers of data, set up your emails, transfer all your information over from your old computer, do all the updates and then burn your recovery discs, install Java, Adobe Reader, Flash Player, a free Anti-Virus and free Office. All you have to do is plug it in and away you go. They even back their computer towers with a 5 year limited warranty because they build them themselves. AMS Computers’ prices are also very competitive. If you haven’t already bought that new computer better act fast not long to go now. I’ve had loads of requests on how to get videos onto discs, I suppose this is for relatives etc. and a memory of Christmas 2012, so for Mark, Beryl, Joan, Bill, Annette, Pat and Uncle Tom Cobley and all, here you go. I always use Nero, I find it’s the most user friendly, easy to load and use, and cheap. Step 1. Open up the program called Nero, choose photo and video. 2. Select make your own DVD video. 3. Click add files. 4. Navigate to the files you require. 5. Select the file and click open. 6. Once it has finished encoding click next. 7. At this screen you can choose a background for your DVD. If you click on the preview of the menu you can then customise it further by renaming and customising the buttons. 8. Click next. 9. Click next again. This is a preview screen where you can see what button does what on the remote control by just clicking on it. 10. Click next, you are

now at the final screen, click burn, and the files you chose will now burn to DVD. How to get photos from a camera to computer. Step 1. Attach camera to computer through the USB cable (usually supplied with digital cameras). Wait and a window will come up asking you what you want to do. 2. Choose copy pictures to a folder on my PC. 3. Click next, this will then bring up a preview of all the pictures on your camera. 4. Click next. There is a box around the middle of the page called delete pictures from device after copying them, tick this box if you no longer want the pictures on your camera. 5. Click next. It will now begin copying the pictures from your camera to your computer. 6. When it has finished, just click finish and it will bring up the folder with the pictures you chose in it. The last one is putting photos on a disc to send to relatives. Step 1. Open Nero. 2. Go to Data. 3. Click add. 4. Click on open my pictures. 5. Select the pictures you want to add. 6. Click the add button. 7. Repeat this action until you have finalised your selection you want on disc then click close. 8. Click next, then click burn when it asks for a disc. Insert the disc and it will burn your photos to it. At the end of the burn click finish and it will bring up the folder with the pictures in it. 9. Choose photo and video in Nero. Select make your own DVD video and click add files. 10. Navigate to where you put the file and select the file and click open. 11. When it has finished encoding, click next. At this screen you can choose the background for your DVD. 12. Click on the preview of the menu. You can then customise it by renaming and repositioning the button. 13. Click next. 14. Click next again. In this preview screen you can test the buttons shown to see what they do on your remote control. 15. Click next again. This is the final screen, click burn, and all will be burnt to DVD. That’s it for this year 2012! I have tried to make everything easy for you to follow and user friendly. I hope it helps some of the loyal readers of this column I would like to wish one and all a very happy Christmas and look forward to being with you all again in 2013. Chrissy Celebrations

Your monthly gardening guide brought to you by ‘Bundaberg Wholesale Palms & Plants’

Time to dress up the garden for your Christmas Celebrations. Outdoor entertainment is such a good way to make the season special. Why not pave a special area, provide some seating and a large umbrella for a bit of shade. Use one of the beaut elephant, frog or turtle umbrella holders we stock for some novelty. Add a water feature and a few tropical plants to the area and it is all set, so easy. Or maybe it is time to add a Bali Hut or Spa area to your outdoor living area. Great for those festive entertaining times. A large feature pot with a stunning plant or a feature statue can also be a good highlight to the entertainment area. For a bit of easy colour use some bright festive flags. Purple and pinks seems to be the in vogue colour this Christmas and petunias are excellent for those colours. They are fantastic for colour in the full sun in the garden or a pot. For table decor there is a new range of bloom pots in contemporary vogue colours. They are a pot cover and act like a saucer. Simply place your whole 140mm pot plant inside. Easy to change around for the seasons. They are excellent for an affordable gift idea with a lovely fern or peace lily. There are lots of other dress up ideas from wall art such as colourful geckos, butterflies, mosaic mirrors, colourful wind chimes or dream catchers and that is only to name a small area of our gift lines. Your garden or outdoor living area is there for you to relax and have fun so add some colour, add • Concrete Pool a feature and enjoy.
