LOCAL NEWS

Natural disasters takes toll on local businesses

From the tourism industry to food producers, businesses across the Bundaberg Region were significantly impacted by Ex Tropical Cyclone Oswald, according to the results of a three month economic impact study commissioned by Council and conducted by Lawrence Consulting. Economic Development portfolio spokesperson Cr Greg Barnes said the comprehensive survey revealed the following key economic impacts of the natural disaster for the Bundaberg Local Government Area were: • The total estimated cost of direct damages to businesses across the region as a result of the natural disasters was$309.4 million or $159,062 per business. • The property market has contracted significantly following the flood event, with house process in the region falling by8.1% in the June Quarter 2013. • A small negative short-term impact was felt on the labour market with the number of employed persons having fallen by 682 over the March and June quarters 2013. • Direct loss of income $152.9 million • Decrease in supply chain turnover $146.7 million • Decrease in contribution to Gross Regional Product $148.4 million, or 4.3 in percentage terms. “In the Bundaberg region the report found approximately 90% of local businesses which participated in the survey suffered an average loss of $178,214 for those that were flooded and around $87,415 for those which weren’t inundated,” Cr Barnes said. “That’s obviously a huge impact for local businesses in a regional community like ours.” Less than one in five businesses that responded to the survey felt they had already recovered from the flood.

“Whilst this certainly paints a bleak picture it provides each and every one of us with an opportunity to play an active part in the region’s economic recovery simply by shopping locally in the lead-up to Christmas and beyond,” Cr Barnes said. “For the region to bounce back our businesses need to be firing on all cylinders and to do that they need our support.” Cr Barnes said the results of the survey would be used to measure the direct and indirect impacts the natural disaster had on the local industry and identify what businesses felt could be done differently in future disasters to better support their recovery. “This study gives both Bundaberg and North Burnett Regional Councils a better understanding of exactly how businesses were and still are affected by the floods and tornadoes,” Cr Barnes said. Other key findings from the report include: • Approximately three-quarters of businesses that took part in the survey were forced to close for a period as a result of the floods in January. • Of those businesses impacted, about 40% reopened within a week while a further 13% were operating again in two weeks • The average time that it took businesses to bounce back after the floods was about 48 days. • The January 2013 flood had a negative impact on the tourism industry in the region with a decrease in the number of overnight visitors relative to the previous year, in particular those from overseas. A full summary of the Economic Impact Assessment is available on the Business Bundaberg website at: www. businessbundaberg.com.au.

LOCAL NEWS AMS surprises Pat with generous donation Is there something the community should know? Ph: 0488 754 816

Mathew and Steven Wright, owners of AMS Computer Services, recently surprised Pat Russell, president of the Make-A-Wish Australia Bundaberg Branch, with a home visit to present her with a Multilaser Android Touchpad and case valued at $500. Pat was very surprised when opening the door and finding Mathew and Steven smiling on her doorstep. “It was a great surprise,” said Pat.

“These boys are the best and their generosity is much appreciated. “Due to the value of this generous donation, we will most probably hold a raffle to help raise money for Make-A-Wish,” beamed Pat. AMS Computer Services regularly help out local non-profit groups by donating computers, printers, monitors and more. “If it wasn’t for the community support AMS Computers would not be what it is today, this is our way of saying thanks and giving back to the community,” said Mathew. Pat Russell has been president for Make-AWish for 18 years. “Without the generosity of local businesses such as AMS Computers we would not be able to grant the wishes of sick children in the local community,” Pat said. “We are a nonprofit organisation and rely heavily on community generosity and volunteers to keep doing what we do.” If you would like to give to Make-A-Wish whether it is by donation or volunteering, contact Pat on 0414 316 437.

Mecano – Building Made Easy

Well it’s been 10 months since Bundaberg citizens were affected by the January floods and are well on their on way to recovering and rebuilding from the losses. Sales Manager, Toni Power said, “That is certainly the case for one of our customers, Alison. Alison came to see me because she had been flooded twice and decided it was time to rebuild. Alison speaks of her experience with Mecano and building her new home.” …… “Hi my name is Alison. I have been flooded twice in two years and was to the point where I was too afraid to go home and wasn’t sure what to do. I was looking through the paper one morning and saw an ad for Mecano. There was a picture of a house and I pointed to it and said to my son, ‘That’s what I want’. So the next day I went into Mecano Bundaberg and met with Toni, the Sales Manager. She was lovely, easy to talk to, very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. I don’t understand the process or any of the building side of things, nor did I really want to. I just wanted my home. I had so much going on and so much stress I didn’t want to deal with all of it. Toni made the process very simple. If I had a problem or didn’t understand what I needed to do, she helped me. She recommended ‘Steve’ the builder. He is fantastic. Nothing is too much trouble for this pair. I am over the moon with my decision to go with Mecano and Steve Goodwin (builder). I can 100% guarantee that I made the right choice. I can’t wait for it to be finished so I can finally go home.” Kit homes are just one of the fantastic products we sell. Mecano run their own metal roll-forming mills and manufacture their own ‘C’ sections, roof and ceiling battens, steel trusses, wall framing, roof cladding, gutters, barge and ridge cap. This allows us to create many products and our customers to save $$$$. Jump on our website: www.mecano.com.au and check out our entire range from toll rolling, carports, garages, cabins, transportables and of course, kit homes. Please call in and see Toni at unit 2, 31 Boundary Street, corner of FE Walker Street and Boundary Street, and let her help you with your building needs. Mecano also has a sales office on the corner of Graham Street and Brisbane Road, Gympie with the main factory at Dennis Little Drive, Gympie.

Residents urged to help kids in care this Christmas

Burnett residents can help bring a smile to the faces of children and young people living in care on Christmas Day by donating a present to the Newman Government’s annual Kids in Care Christmas Appeal. Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett said locals could show their community spirit by dropping in and leaving a present at the ABC studio in Bundaberg. “This year’s appeal acknowledges that it takes a whole ‘village’ or community to raise a child and we must lend our support to the hundreds of foster and kinship carers who do a great job all year round,” Mr Bennett said. “I am encouraging all Burnett residents to be part of the village and show they care by supporting our Christmas appeal. “Our community is known for pulling together to help each other and this time we’re pulling together to show our support for kids in care.” Mr Bennett said presents such as gift cards, sporting equipment, board games, clothes and books to the value of about $20 would be very well

received. Presents need to be suitable for a child aged 0 to 17 years. People can make their donation at their local child safety service centre, or the Bundaberg ABC studio at 58 Woongarra Street. The appeal runs until 13 December. Any surplus toys will be distributed to other children who are known to Child Safety.

Celebrate our new babies with a welcome day

Recognising the region’s “newest arrivals” usually involves a citizenship ceremony but the Welcome Baby Celebration provides an opportunity to welcome the regions babies in a very special way. Organisers are calling on new mums across the region to register their babies by March 7, 2014 to participate in this ceremony with each registered baby to receive a Baby Loves Bundaberg Region Pack and a special certificate signed and presented by the Mayor, Cr Mal Forman. Community Services portfolio spokesperson, Cr Judy Peters said the event was co-sponsored by Council in partnership with Family and Baby Network and News Mail. “This is a really lovely initiative which involves parents or expecting parents being able to register their child to participate in a special celebration on April 11 next year where certificates, complimentary baby bundles and a photo opportunity will be available.” Cr Peters said babies registered must be no older than 13 months on the day of the celebration and be a resident of the Bundaberg Region. “Unfortunately we need to cap participation to the first 50 babies registered.”

“It certainly will be a special moment for these new residents of the Bundaberg Region and their parents. They will receive something very special that will serve as a memento of the occasion for years to come,” said Mayor Mal Forman. For more information please visit:

HEALTHY MIND David Lawson - Helping you to Find the Light!

When we get stressed from or overwhelmed with life our bodies struggle to cope. Some people cope with their stress or emotional pain by self-harming. People who self-harm are usually trying to control, relieve or express their feelings. Often the reasons they self-harm are difficult to put into words (which can make them more stressed).

People who are more likely to self-harm have experienced or are experiencing emotional, physical or sexual abuse, have a very critical or stressful family environment, or have a mental illness such as depression. I need to stress very clearly that not everyone who has had these experiences, or is currently facing them, will self-harm – they are just more likely to. The act of self-harming can help the person to feel alive as the pain and/or the blood tells them they are alive. Or it can give them a sense of control over the pain they are experiencing in their life. Or it can help them escape from the pain in their life. Or it can be a way they can show others they are not coping with life and are asking for help. Not everyone who self-harms is thinking about suicide but sometimes the actions of self-harm do lead to death. Some self-harmers overcome this by themselves while others need the support of their friends and family. Counselling can help them to feel better and to find other ways of coping with the stress. Self-harmers can find it very hard to tell others or talk to a counsellor as they feel guilty, ashamed or angry about why they self-harm or that they do it. They are often afraid that they will be judged very critically if they disclose what they do. We offer support both to self-harmers and their family and friends.

LOCAL NEWS Residents asked to report sightings of pest bird Highlight your business Ph: 0448 214 428

Local residents have been advised not to underestimate the potential environmental harm the establishment of Indian Myna bird numbers could cause across the Bundaberg Region. Bundaberg Regional Council is hoping to replicate the success of its Childers Indian Myna bird trapping program in Bundaberg to combat the emergence of the pest locally. Natural Resource Management Operations Supervisor Nick Maclean said more than 1,200 of the imported pests have been captured in the Childers area through a co-ordinate and prolonged trapping program. “Childers has a historic association with the birds dating back almost 100 years and it is somewhat of a surprise that it has taken the birds until late last year to be identified in any numbers in the Bundaberg city area. “The Indian Myna, not to be confused with the more prevalent Noisy Miner, is a very territorial and aggressive species originally brought to Childers for cane beetle and grub control,” he said. Natural Resources portfolio spokesperson, Cr Danny Rowleson said Council wanted to identify the location of the Indian Myna in and around Bundaberg, Bargara and Moore Park. “We have had reports of the birds sighted at Bundaberg Port,” Cr. Rowleson said. “Childers residents are historically aware of the harm this bird can cause once it is allowed to breed in numbers. I think Bundaberg residents are less familiar with the bird and do not see it as a problem at this stage.” Cr. Rowleson said Council wanted local residents to identify the location of the birds and sites where it may roost in numbers. Freedom To Be Mobile “We would also welcome approaches from residents who may like to participate in a trapping program. For the program Providing services to the general to be effective it really does require a commitment in time and public and the Medical Aids not just a weekend or two,” said Cr. Rowleson. The Bundaberg region is also home to the Noisy Miner Subsidy Scheme (Manorina melanocepha) which is a native species of Miner Selling, servicing that is similar in appearance to the Indian Myna. It is important to distinguish the two species before making and maintaining any reports on the distribution and presence of the targeted most makes of Indian Myna. The most obvious difference between the two species is their colour; the undesirable Indian Myna has mobility aids, darker plumage (brown to black); whereas the Noisy Miner scooters has predominantly grey plumage, with darker grey feathers and faint yellow highlights on its wings and head. and For further information, contact Council’s Land Protection wheelchairs Officers on 1300 883 699.

MONTHLY FISHING UPDATE As soon as November gets here so do the Northerlies, each year I say never again but every year I see a flat sea, a gentle north wind and I hitch up the boat grab a deckie and set off at day break. A north wind is probably the worst time to go off shore fishing, the sea temperature rises and the fish go on holiday. They just won’t bite, you can see them on the sounder, but they just won’t bite. Such was the situation on Saturday the 8th, flasks and sandwiches, bait and ice, car and boat fuelled up and away we went at 5.30am. We fished the Kolan Patch 3 marks, next the 15 mile, then the 19 mile all to no avail the water temp was 26 degrees so no fish for the day, but I should have realised when the Burnett Heads boat ramp only had a dozen bigger trailers parked there. The best fishing was in the rivers but even they were a little slow. Working down from Baffle Creek, try for Mangrove Jack at the Ferry Crossing and at the rocks. Live baits are best. There are still some good Bream up river, prawn and yabbies best here. Near the sailing club fish for Flathead and Whiting, using yabbies and sandworms for bait. The mouth of the river has seen some large Flathead being caught using sprat and Whiting fillets. The Kolan River is good for Bream, Whiting and a few Flathead, using the same baits as above. Burnett River has been fishing well in certain spots including the traffic bridges at dusk and at night Flathead at Paddy’s Island. Along the rock wall to the old Molasses Wharf for Whiting and Bream and Flathead along the North wall from the Port to the mouth. The Elliott has been producing some nice Jacks at the rocks and in the areas of fallen trees. Flathead are in the Elliott but you will need to drift for them. Burrum River has been a little quiet with the mouth fishing the best out to the third leader. Some nice Bream caught along the north side deep gutter and a couple of monster Flathead taken here in deep water on sprat and IQF pilchard. Most of the impoundments have been picking up with some good Barramundi being caught. Try in the new territory after the floods have opened up some new ground, fish are inquisitive, and this is where the big Barra have been caught. Mostly the size has been around 70cm. Don’t ask me what lure to use as you can use a spinner one day and fill your Creel and the next day never get a bite, so it’s just trial and error. I, myself, like live bait best. The old Opera bait net does me, but it’s up to the individual. Tips for landing a catch: Fish for whiting on a run in tide and Flathead on a run out tide. Jacks like a high tide and Bream like a run in tide. As I always say rig up for the fish species you are after, you will catch big fish on little hooks but always make sure you have fresh bait and don’t forget to take a couple of crab pots with you as there are crabs about at the moment. I always get at least two every trip on the river. Bundaberg Sports Fishing Club has had a great year, they have tagged a huge amount of fish, obtained grants for impoundment re-stocking and had some really good tag a longs all thanks to some hard working members.

They have done sausage sizzles and attended lots of competitions to spread the word for catch and release. Thanks to the Tradies and Ladies Magazine and its popularity we have obtained some new members, who are also enjoying some good fishing. Remember you don’t need a big boat to join the club; a lot of members have the boats but are always looking for crew so this could be you! Check out their website at: www. bundabergsportsfishing.com.au. Just like to wish everyone a very happy and joyous Christmas and 2014. Here’s hoping you get what you want and want what you get. Happy fishing.

Bundaberg Sports Fishing Club members happy with their catch.

Tech Talk & Tips Here we are at the end of another year and what a year it’s been? It only seems a week ago I was carving up the turkey and having a few cold ones and here we are about to do it all over again. This time of the year I get asked over and over again, which is the best computer to buy, how much are they and do I need a laptop or tower? Well there is no magic bullet or answer to any of these questions. First thing to remember is you only get what you pay for! Many things have to be taken into consideration when buying a new computer not just the price. When you buy from a big franchised store, you have to fully set up your new computer yourself. This can be a very daunting task if you are not computer literate, when you consider it takes a fully trained technician, who sets computers up all the time around 3 hours. As a small business, it is only natural that AMS Computers would say that a small business looks after you better than a big business. In the case of AMS Computers, who build the computers and service them, I feel this statement rings true. They are not about to sell you something that they have no confidence in just to get a sale. If they did, not only would you be dissatisfied but they would be the ones losing time with repairing the computer, whereas with the bigger stores once it is out the door that is the end of their responsibilities. They give you a phone number if anything goes wrong and you get someone from Asia. You send it away yourself and wait weeks for it to be repaired. When AMS Computers sells a laptop or tower, it is sold to you activated and set up, all the temporary programs and files are removed and any recovery discs or flash media it may need are done. They even set up your email account, Microsoft Word, Free Anti-Virus, Java, and install any wireless internet devices for you in the sell price and if you do have a laptop warranty issue they deal with the warranty people for you. AMS Computers do all this and give a massive 5 year limited warranty on all towers. When you get the computer home you simply plug it in and away you go. Computer Questions - Doug says, I have a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium and I am trying to get my 6-yearold Canon printer to work with it but the installation disc I have does not seem to be working. Well first of all congratulations that your printer is still going after 6 years, however, it may be that it is not compatible with the Windows 7 Home Premium program you are trying to install it on. The first thing you need to know is the windows 64bit or 32bit most likely it is 64bit these days, then you need to go to the Canon website and look for the drivers for that printer in Windows 7 64bit format, you then download them to your laptop and run the installer.

If you have any problems just ring AMS Computers they will be only too happy to help, either by downloading the drivers to a disc for you or actually coming out and installing it for you. I have had a Hotmail email account for four years I have always used the same password but just recently I have not been able to access my account, it says my password is wrong. This is something that happens from time to time with these free email accounts for whatever reason the password stops working. It can be that your account was hacked and the password has been changed (they usually change the security questions at the same time), whatever the reason unless you set it up with a secondary account that you can use to reset the password there is not much you can do. You could also have it linked to your mobile phone when you set it up and you can request they send the password to your phone. AMS advises people to use a secure email account provided by their internet provider wherever possible. If you have an account with your provider they always issue an email address and you can request more than one if needed. However, if you use prepaid internet it is unavoidable you have to use the free options. One way around the problems is to have two email addresses and have the emails from the main one automatically forwarded to the second then if one is shutdown you can access the other. Kate asks, I have downloaded music from my CD collection onto my computer and put it onto a flash drive, however, it will not play on my new CD/Radio in my car. It has a USB port on the front of it so I thought to have them on a flash drive would save my CDs from being damaged by the heat when they are left in the car. What am I doing wrong? Kate, you have to find an MP3 Converter program on the net, the one I would recommend is MP3 OCG wma convertor. Download and install it. Open the program Free MPS WMA OCG convertor off the desktop. Click on the big green add button, and locate the music you wish to convert, select it and click on the open button. Click the next button, Select as to where you want the music to go to and then click convert. Wait for this process to finish and then click the finish button. Now you have drive time music Kate. When AMS Computer Services reopens after the Christmas and New Year break their opening times will be Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 5pm. Allowing you to drop off your computers before going to work. They will no longer be open on Saturday mornings. Well that’s it for this year hope you all have a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. A special thanks to AMS Computer Services for their professional help and sponsorship through 2013.

Celebrate 2014 by the river with fireworks and laser show

Bundaberg skies will light us this New Year’s Eve with a dazzling fireworks display and laser show to rival any others previously seen across the region. The fireworks will be positioned on the northern side of the Burnett River and will face back to the river walk, Anzac Park and Bundaberg’s CBD, making it an ideal location for locals, families and boaties to soak up the party atmosphere. Mayor, Cr Mal Forman said the celebrations will combine a large fireworks display with a choreographed laser effects and animation show. “New Year’s Eve in the Bundaberg Region is set to be bigger and better than ever. There will be two fireworks displays; the first display will kick off at 8pm for the little ones and we’ll also have a larger display at midnight for the bigger kids,” Cr Forman said. “A laser screen will be erected on the Burnett River shoreline in front of the fireworks display. The best locations for viewing the special effects will be next to the RSL.

“These displays represent months of planning and hard work by Council’s Regional Events Office, who work tirelessly throughout the year to put on amazing community events, including Chinese New Year, the Childers Festival and Bundy Flavours. We’re also happy to have assistance from Vulcan Fireworks and Naming Rights Sponsor Wide Bay Australia who are helping us put on the biggest fireworks display the Region has seen in 14 years. “Council is grateful to have Vulcan Fireworks on board, who have so kindly offered these fireworks at a heavily discounted rate to help lift spirits of the local community which was severely affected by the floods this year,” he said. Tony Carnabuci from Vulcan Fireworks said the company was more than happy to get involved. “As a fireworks operator I see the joy and smiles that they bring to the faces of kids both big and small. And I reckon the fireworks and laser display we’ve got planned should do just that. We’re hoping to blow locals away!”
