WELCOME BACK TO OUR LOYAL READERS & SUPPORTERS The team at Tradies and Ladies would like to take this opportunity to THANK all that were and still are involved in getting Bundaberg back up and running after the Australia Day weekend devastation. We have all heard how wonderful the Army was and the tireless effort from the Mud Army but let’s all remember and not to forget all the others in the background, all the wonderful volunteers who have given their time at the evacuation centres, making food, sorting donated goods and making sure people were safe and had somebody to talk too. Also remember some of these people were actually effected quite badly themselves.

To all the Tradies out there we thank you for your tireless efforts as so many of you donated your time and equipment. Please remember this is not over yet, with the damage done to the Burnett River people need to be careful, the banks have been weakened, debris floating and hidden and contaminated water. As for the fishing at the moment, about the only place that would be safe (weather permitting) would be out at the reefs. Until next time please stay safe.

Bundaberg coal finds excite mining companies The mining resources boom may be a handful of years away from significantly impacting the Bundaberg Region but the signs are positive that mining in the region will become a reality. Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor, Cr Mal Forman said he was excited by the news that mining joint venture partners headed by International Coal had reported finding good deposits of high quality coking coal in an area to the north east of Bundaberg. “I am advised International Coal is now ramping up its exploration of the area following this find,” said Cr Forman. “A recent report indicated that the results of further drilling and core samples from across the region will be known in around two to three months. “International Coal has been exceptionally collaborative with Council and has been mindful to consult in detail with all

stakeholders.” Cr Forman said there was obviously a lot of work to be undertaken before any firm decision regarding mining in the region was a reality. “It is important that our community be consulted every step of the way but the potential for job creation at our back door is a fabulous prospect and one that must be seriously canvassed.” Cr Forman said the find was around 50 kilometres from Bundaberg around the Avondale area. “From all reports the find is very significant and has the joint venture partners very excited. I understand the precise quantities of coal have not yet been identified but the news is extremely positive.” “Mining could open a whole new chapter in the future of our region. It has to be greeted as positive news,” Cr Forman said.

Flood relief race meeting for Bundaberg Bundaberg will hold a special country race “A lot of parties have come together to organise

meeting to raise money for locals impacted by recent flooding, Member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett announced today. Mr Bennett said a six race dual-code Queensland Sustain Country series meeting would be held on Saturday, April 6 at the Bundaberg Race Club and includes a $20,000 Flood Relief Sustain Series Cup. The Bundaberg Greyhound Racing Club will host a five race greyhound program on the same day. “The Newman Government is doing everything possible to get the devastated Bundaberg region back to business and this race day is another way for Queenslanders to show their support,” Mr Bennett said. “Racing Queensland Limited (RQL) and Tattsbet will donate all wagering revenue from the feature race to the Bundaberg flood recovery. “Given the scale of damage to Bundaberg’s sporting and recreation facilities I know it’s going to be a tough road to complete recovery, but I’ve already seen the determination and resilience of Queenslanders on display, with clean-up efforts now well underway.” “The meeting will also be supported with a special City to Bush event spearheaded by the Brisbane Racing Club (BRC), which will attend with its corporate partners and hold several fundraising initiatives,” he said. Mr Bennett said while both events would remain classified as non-TAB meetings, RQL has negotiated with Sky Racing to broadcast the $20,000 Flood Relief Sustain Series Cup feature race on Sky Racing 1. “The flood relief meeting could not have been scheduled without the support of the Queensland industry,” Mr Bennett said.

I have not come across anyone who has not been affected by the events that happened in our community at the end of January. Whether directly or indirectly the heavy rain, wind and/or floods has had an impact on what we see around us and how we respond to those images. For some of us there was some minor inconvenience such as having to drive to work the long way round or perhaps not being able to go to work for a few days. For others, life has become a lot harder than it was. Simple things such as walking in the backyard or driving down to the shops, which once were pleasurable, are now reminders of the height and destruction of the flood water. We Will Rebuild - a local musician’s tribute

As the Bundaberg region continues to clean up and the severity of the situation sets in, local musician Pete O’Brien is once again compelled to express the community’s emotional upheaval and hope by putting pen to paper. He has just written “We Will Rebuild” in an effort to support the community through song. “I can not believe that we are here again – though this time it is much worse. Through the devastation the community are coming together and showing the true Bundaberg spirit and I was compelled to help through music. I was inspired to write this song in an attempt to capture the essence of this town and to help uplift the spirit of it’s residents,” said musician, Pete Obrien. Recently released “We all live in the same town” single was written by Pete when the 2010/2011 Bundaberg floods triggered a series of emotions within the community. “Ironically I was in Tamworth performing when Bundaberg once again was engulfed by the flood waters. I was in the top 10 from over 400 in the Professional busking comp. Five minutes before I

went on the Toyota Open Air Main Stage in the Park I had a phone call telling me what had happened in Bundy. I sang ‘’We All Live In The Same Town’’ with tears in my eyes to over 2000 people,” said Pete. Pete also performed at local evacuation centres with many other local musicians helping to bide the time of evacuees and help them through with the power of music. Attention Flood Victims

All-Safe would like to offer our sympathy to all our local people who have been so adversely affected by the recent flood. I can only imagine the heartache involved in losing things which are so special to you. Although it may appear some time off, things will eventually get back to normal. After such a devastating event it can seem like such an uphill battle however you will in time get there. As a registered Builder and having been involved in many home repairs and reconstructions after the floods in Mackay, I hope to be able to offer a little advice in regards to your home repairs: • Do not be in too much of a hurry to get your home repaired especially if the plaster board needs to be replaced. It takes a lot of time to get the timber to dry especially if it is built on a concrete slab. Many homes in Mackay had to be completely redone after the initial repairs the plaster either fell off or became mouldy. From my experience artificial driers can cause more problems than they solve as moisture from under the slab can wick into the framework from underneath after the wall has been resheeted. Just give it time to dry out. Some homes we repaired took up to nine months to dry. • You have the option to take a cash payout from your insurance company and organise repair to be carried out by your choice of builder. • Make sure you get the total price of your repair contract established before you sign anything. • Be confident in your builder before you sign a contract, as you have the choice (after all it is your house). With all the recent disasters in Bundaberg and surrounding areas, many of our residents are still traumatised, in shock or feeling quite anxious. Our continuation of unpredictable weather has also been disturbing. This is a time to be gentle with yourself, be there for your neighbours and appreciate every moment with our family. It is also important to keep your immune system in good order. A multi vitamin, high in the Bs would be suitable to reduce stress and increase energy. A good B complex will also assist with preventing mosquito bites, but be sure to also wear mosquito repellent. Some people may also need some adrenal support if they are feeling the effects of Adrenal Exhaustion. Here at Bargara Beach Holistic Health Centre, we were quite lucky compared to most. Unfortunately, many of our neighbours lost their roofs and have been relocated while their houses are restored. The roof at our Centre/Home appeared okay at the front but most of the damage was at the back of the house. At this stage, I have been advised that the whole roof and ceiling will need to be replaced and that I will have to move out. Due to the lack of accommodation, and being the owner of a dog and two cats, I have decided to stay with my family in Perth while the house is being restructured, and will then make further decisions at that time. For years I have been expressing posting products around Australia and doing phone consultations, for people not living in Bundaberg. Many of these clients, I have not personally met, but we have been able to have some great results. During this time, this is how Bargara Beach Holistic Health Centre will be running. The email and website will stay the same, the mobile will remain the same and the business phone number should be diverted. Existing clients, who may not require a review, can contact me as per usual and I will arrange to post their products over, and they should arrive within 3 days. Clients requiring a review or initial consultation can request this also. During this time, there will be more focus on Functional Pathology testing which was also being used at Dr Cummings surgery Back To Basics. This is using blood, urine or saliva to test for hormones, adrenal function, alternative thyroid testing, food allergies, vitamins and minerals etc. This is done through a few different labs including Healthscopes. I am currently still taking appointment bookings up until the 22nd March. During my time in Perth, I am hoping to begin collating my well awaited book. MONTHLY FISHING UPDATE

You only have to put your boat in the river and the fish will come running, well nothing could be further from the truth! Some days you can get onto the fish straight away and fill your esky, next day you can fish the same spot with the same bait and not get a bite. I have been out on the reef and caught Trevally one after another, fished the same spot a couple of days later and only landed one or two fish. Last month was a bit like that, I fished the Baffle Creek from half tide out to half tide in, on Sunday the 20th and only managed a couple of Flatties around 30cm.Trevor Galletly, one of my mates managed to get bragging rights when he hooked a Flathead of 86cm, but that was all. It was noted that this fish was “very fat”, here lies the problem, due to a lack of rain the bait fish are holding in and up the river systems, the predators such as Flathead, Mangrove Jack and Threadfin Salmon are still hanging about. Fish for these at dawn and dusk, Whiting fillets and fresh large prawns the best bait here. Some big Bream are still about; they all have a smorgasbord of Sprat, Hardy heads, poddy Mullet and good sized prawns that are growing big and fat due to the lack of rain. To put it plainly the fish are not hungry. Your best bet is to fish up the Baffle Creek at the Ferry Crossing, the mouth of the Kolan, with prawns at and near the boat ramp; the mouth of the Burnett plus from the Rum Distillery to Splitters creek. Fish up the river from Elliott Heads boat ramp to Fallons Rocks and also the Burrum River mouth from the third leader and up the top Trevor Galletly with his nice end round the bends. sized Flathead caught at Baffle Go for Whiting with yabbies and artificial worm, beach worm, chopped prawn or try Creek mini poppers. Same baits for bream but fish deeper and along mangroves. Flathead are tempted with small pilchard on a ganged hook, silver or gold Halco hard body 4 to 5inch lure and certainly try the Micro Mullet and Zereck plastic prawn. The secret here is if you are going fishing, fish for that one species, if it’s Whiting you are targeting, go a fine tipped rod around 8 to 9 foot, very light line and a small hook. I personally like a No6 or 8 nickel plated bait hook, so target your fish and set your tackle to suit. Reports just in that a good day was had fishing down river from Paddy’s Island, and drifting along and outside the rock wall, over the sand flat to the old Molasses Wharf, using pilchards on ganged hooks, on an outgoing tide. Outside has been patchy, with reports of hits and misses. The Cochran’s Artificial Reef (2mile) has not been so active of late and the wreck out from the Baffle has dried up. A few days last month saw some nice schools of School Mackerel with a few Spanish thrown in. Tailor haven’t made an appearance as yet, neither have the Cobia. Everyone is working hard at getting a feed even the Tuna schools are not biting. The dams are all fishing okay with Monduran producing some great fun with good catches of Barra around 60 to 80cm and sometimes you can luck onto a rod breaker. Live bait has been the best here with XRaps a very close second. The Barra are hanging a bit deeper now that the water has Freedom To Be Mobile warmed up so set your lure to the depth that you see them Providing services to the general on the sounder. Tech Talk & Tips Please note that this publication will cover January/ February, as the management and staff of Tradies & Ladies has foregone the February edition to allow businesses to get on their feet. This unselfish and generous gesture has been well received by AMS Computers and many more of the businesses which regularly advertise and rely on the Tradies & Ladies Magazine to do what it does best and that’s bring in customers with a very professional publication each month. Well here we are and the first month of 2013 is already over. Christmas is such a hectic time, don’t you just love the grandkids coming to visit !! They know everything! Here are a few tips for all you out there that have relatives or grandchildren that head straight for your computer. Number one - put in a password, then simply say you forgot what it was, but remember to write it down somewhere. Number two - pull out the power cord and hide the end amongst the other wires. Number three - simply turn off your monitor, and say you can’t get a picture. Christmas and family get togethers are for having fun, a game of backyard cricket, a visit to the park, a drive down to the beach, not with faces glued to a computer etc. AMS Computers has been very, very busy since they came back from the Christmas/ New Year break. Everyone seems to have received technology gifts for Christmas and a large number of you seem to be struggling with Windows 8. I am finding a lot of people who have windows 8 laptops are spending $5 on the App to make it more user friendly and giving it a task bar, which everyone is used to. AMS Computers has a limited number of a very good Windows 8 book “Visually Learning Windows 8” on sale for just $29, this book is a gem. Every click of the mouse is shown stage by stage and in colour as it is on the screen of your computer. AMS Computers made this available as they had so much success with the Windows 7 version. There has been a number of computers struck down by a virus that comes up as “This computer has been locked down by the AFP” (Australian Federal Police) this is NOT true and you should shut the computer down and get it to a computer technician as soon as this comes up. We have also had a few people accidently wiping their computers. When a message comes up that says the computer was not shut down correctly, or has some sort of

problem, choose the “start windows normally” option not the restore or recovery option, and under NO circumstances do you insert your windows disc and try to run it. If you are not a qualified technician there is a good chance you will accidentally format your drive and lose everything. Also remember when it comes to Antivirus programs you only need one installed on your computer at a time, as two or more will only regard each other as a problem, and neither will work properly. I recommend Kaspersky, it’s one of the best and one of the cheapest. Now with all the bank fraud that is going on, do you realise that if you have a “free” Antivirus program on your computer and you do internet banking, should you encounter a fraud on your funds some banks will not do a refund - so for just a few dollars drop into AMS Computers and get a Kaspersky Antivirus and have peace of mind it’s easy to install and automatically updates itself. Skype users beware of a message saying your computer has a problem and the “Systems Analyst” message shows, when it comes up on Skype, BLOCK IT, these people are the same as the call centres that ring and say they know your computer has problems on the phone. The easiest way to get rid of them is to say “I don’t own a computer” and they hang up straight away. Do not under any circumstances let anyone have access to your computer over the phone or air waves. Some people have written in saying they have trouble with Emails - opening video clips etc. Always make sure you have your Java and Adobe reader updated all the time, sometimes, with Windows 7 especially, when you are trying to look at an attachment that’s come in it will not connect or takes ages. Simply, in this situation, click start, shutdown and then restart your computer, or simply just press the restart button at the front of your computer, this nearly always works. For all the people, especially our senior citizens which are venturing into the new world of computers, if you get yourselves in a bit of a pickle simply turn off your computer, count to 30 and restart again. Your computer will restart, unless you have done something “drastic” go back to the original settings. If in any doubt join U3A (University of the Third Age) at the rear of Blockbusters Video Store. Make new friends, have a fun time and learn computers with others. There are lots of great products on the market to get your garden healthy and growing vibrantly and we have found a real beauty. Simple and not new but it works! Nothing beats healthy plants and showing off their full potential. Two products which can work independently or in combination and are 100% organic and made in Australia: Seasol is a seaweed concentrate containing naturally occurring growth hormones (auzins and cytokinins). Fantastic for root development, therefore ideal treatment when planting or transplanting plants. Seasol enhances plant resistance to stress, disease and insect attack by inducing thicker and stronger cell walls in foliage and fruit. This means it is harder for insects and fungi to attack. Also protecting from frost, excessive heat and low soil moisture. Powerfeed is a fish fertiliser with liquid compost. A rich source of macro nutrients such as nitrogen and potassium, trace elements, proteins and amino acids. The liquid compost is the remaining elements when compost breaks down to become part of the soil. Highly concentrated to benefit all soil types. Improving aeration and water penetration in clay soils. Yet in sandy soils the liquid compost attracts nutrients and holds them in a form that a plant can use, reducing leaching. Therefore it becomes a power feeder. Application = There are easy to follow instructions on the pack. Most usage is a couple of capfuls in a watering can and water on your plants every 2-4 weeks. Another great idea is to use an old ‘hose on’ container which has only had a fertiliser insecticide in it previously. Wash it out well, fill with 500ml of Seasol and 500ml of Powerfeed and the remainder • Concrete Pool with water. Click on to hose and use as normal.
