FISHING UPDATES There are numerous fishing shows on the television and it seems every time they cast a line they catch a fish, nothing could be further from the truth, the guru, Rex Hunt, has been known to fish an area for a week to catch three fish. The same seems to

appear in fishing reports, I hope I can deliver something more informative. August has been a funny kind of month, the rivers and along the shores have held loads of baitfish, this has brought in the pelagic, tailor, mackerel etc, it has also moved snapper and reef fish closer inshore, great you say, NO not really, as the fish are not hungry so it gets harder to catch a feed. Tailor have been on the chew, but only real early in the morning and only for a short time, they have been caught in the mouth of the Baffle also out to the first leader and just north of the Burnett, plus some good catches reported off Burrum Heads, mainly on pilchards and white five inch plastics and 4 inch pale blue/silver Halco hard bodies. August also saw a run of prawns with some good catches and of a good size, these were off Woodgate and from Burnett Heads to Miara. A few nice sized mackerel were taken just off shore again on floating pilchards and a balloon float. I always found a lead weight, just where the swivel meets the wire on a metre trace, works good as it keeps the bait down, especially leading up to the full moon and high tides. Snapper have been moving on to the Cochran Artificial and a few have

been of good size, but again, night fishing has been the way to snare them. Pilchards and squid being the bait of choice. In the rivers, it’s been hit and miss. Some have been lucky and caught a feed of good bream. Some good whiting have also been about plus a couple of nice sized flathead. Mostly the bream have been round the rock walls at the mouth of the Burnett, at the ferry crossing in the Baffle, with all other rivers holding upstream catches best on a falling tide. Whiting have been in the shallows around yabby beds, yabbies and prawns for bream and squid and worms for whiting. Best fishing on a making tide, slabs of whiting and blue pilchard have worked well for flathead. September is when flathead really get on the move in all the rivers. They are here to breed so be ready, they stay in the rivers in good numbers till around December so fishing will be good, it’s at this time of year that the Flathead Fishing Classic is held at the Gold Coast, check it out on the internet. If my memory serves me correct, this year it’s on Thursday, 29 September to Sunday, 3 October. Bait schools should still be plentiful, so at low tide spend half an hour or so with a cast net and stock up. If you have any difficulties casting, email me on kjms01@bigpond .com and I will email you a video of how to throw a cast net. Next month I want to talk about berleying and how it will increase your catch, also ever thought of joining a fishing club? I belong to the Bundaberg Sports Fishing Club and enjoy the friendship. Everyone is welcome. For more information email: keith@bundysportsfishing.com. au or drop into our next meeting on Sunday, 18 September at 4.45pm at the Community Hall, Zunker Street, Burnett Heads.

IN2SOLAR QLD Pty Ltd is a Bundaberg company, owned by local qualified tradesmen you can trust. Ian Bray of Ian Bray Electrical and Trent Slater from Plumbwise, understood that local people and businesses like to deal with locals. Ian and Trent, both Bundaberg locals, will personally assist you every step of the way from onsite appraisals, to sales and installation. Solar PV (PhotoVoltaic) Power Systems offer you a solution to Energy Inflation. The Queensland State Government currently offers (via Ergon’s Net Feed-in Tariff, NFiT) 44 cents per Kwh (unit) for exported power from a PV system, we pay approximately 21 cents per Kwh for the power we consume from the Grid. Energy Generated by the PV system will be consumed within your house first and any excess power generated in real time will be EXPORTED out to the Grid. So, when Generated power exceeds Imported power you will have a NET difference in your favour of Exported power. It is important to understand how Ergon calculates your account. Import power is energy you consume from the Grid at night and when your usage exceeds the PV’s Generation during the day. This import is charged at approx 21 cents/ Kwh on Tariff 11 (T11). Export power is registered on T11 as a Credit at 44 cents/Kwh. Controlled Tariff loads such as Hot Water on T31 and T33 are calculated at their normal rates and added to your account. The cost of these Tariffs will eat into your Export Credit. Installation of a Solar Hot Water system will maximise your Export Credits.
A correctly sized PV system will off-set your electrical energy consumption, reduce your energy bills, generate some export power and provide you with a buffer against rising energy costs. Grid Connect PV Systems offer a basic installation of PV panels and Inverter to convert DC power from the panels to AC power for your home. The system operates during daylight hours and only when the Supply Authority’s Grid power is connected. In simple terms, it shuts down at night and during black outs. Power produced from the system is consumed within your home and any excess power is exported to the Grid. Grid Back-Up - All the benefits of Grid Connect, PLUS, automatic change-over to a Battery Back-up system during power uutages. Fully programmable, switch the Grid connection OFF, start a generator, be fully automated. Future Proof your power supply, become self sufficient, and, still take advantage of Ergon’s Nett Feedin Tariff Solar hot water systems - The direct benefit of selecting solar hot water over the heat pump or gas systems is the low energy consumption. You can reduce your hot water power bill by up to 70%. IN2SOLAR sell and install an evacuated tube Edson solar hot water system which is 25% more energy efficient than your traditional flat panel solar hot water system. There are various system sizes available and Trent can assist you in selecting the right system for your individual needs and importantly budget. IN2SOLAR is committed to supplying products that will maintain efficiency, performance and stand the test of time. Sailability Bundaberg receive a new dinghy Recently, Sailability Bundaberg was presented with a new sailing dinghy by Eric Campbell from the Endeavour Foundation Endowment Challenge Fund. The Endeavour Foundation Endowment Challenge Fund seeks to benefit the wider Australian disability sector as a whole with an emphasis on people with an intellectual disability, through the provision of grants to fund research, scholarships and providing grants to organisations such as Sailability, to support persons with a disability so that they may lead ordinary lives. “The challenge fund was established to help people with a disability to lead ordinary lives,” Mr Campbell commented. “However, I believe the donation of the Access 303 sailing dinghy to Sailability Bundaberg will allow people with a disability to lead extra-ordinary lives. After all, how many of us get the chance to be master and commander of our own
ships?” Sailability Bundaberg president, Gary Matherson was thrilled with the new dinghy. “Our team of volunteers are keen to swing the new dinghy into service and expand our activities for our friends with a disability,” Mr Matherson said. Bundaberg Regional councillors Danny Rowleson, Lynne Forgan and Judy Peters, were on deck to give their support to this worthy organisation, as the new dinghy named Endeavour One, set off on its maiden sail. “This is such a terrific organisation, with the volunteers giving their time to help local people with a disability enjoy the freedom of sailing and this new edition to their fleet of dinghies will help them continue this great work,” said Councillor Danny Rowleson. Sailability Bundaberg is a nonprofit organisation and run entirely by volunteers. The organisation provides sailing opportunities for people with a disability regardless of age, gender
or level of disability. People with a disability are given the opportunity to realise their dreams by achieving freedom on the water. “The smiles our helpers see on the faces of our friends as they enjoy the sailing experience, make volunteering with Sailability a very enjoyable experience,” Mr Matherson added. If you would like to be part of this beneficial and rewarding organisation, by volunteering a couple hours a week, give Gary a call on 4159 4017.
Councillors Lynne Forgan, Judy Peters and Danny Rowleson, pictured with sailaibility Bundaberg president, Gary Matherson and Sailability clients, Riaan and Luke, give their support as Endeavour One sets sail.

HEALTH AND FITNESS
Naturopathic Information - Herbal Tea and Fish Oil Rooibos Tea - would have to be my number one favourite herbal tea. The Aspalanthus Linearis Plant is grown in the Cedarberg Mountains in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The plant is harvested in summer. Pure mineral water, together with fresh mountain air and the hot sun induces the change from verdant green to the mahogany red (Red Bush Tea). If you are a person who loves your normal cup of tea, and does not like herbal teas, well Rooibos is for you. It looks like normal black tea and tastes similar, but sweeter. You can have milk with it if you choose. It contains no caffeine and is low in tannin (therefore it is not bitter). It also contains an abundance of minerals including iron, magnesium and calcium. Research shows it contains many flavonoids, free radical fighting antioxidants (similar to Polyphenols in green tea). Rooibos tea is suitable for children as well as the elderly. It has a calming effect, soothes the stomach and the nerves. Every cup you have is supplying your body with essential minerals. Available from Woolworths, Coles and health food stores. Fish Oils -Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are polyunsaturated fats that our bodies need but cannot produce. They must be consumed through food or supplements. There are two families of EFAs: omega-3 and omega-6, which need to be consumed in a balanced ratio, to ensure proper eicosanoids production. Eicosanoids are hormone like compounds that affect nearly every system in the body. They regulate pain and inflammation, help
maintain proper blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and promote fluid nerve transmission. Unfortunately our diets today contain too many omega-6s and not enough omega3s. Decades of scientific evidence indicates that this EFA imbalance can contribute to chronic inflammation and a variety of chronic health issues. The most beneficial omega3s that we’re missing are the EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Purified fish oil is the best direct source of EPA and DHA, and has more research behind it than Krill etc. What are the early signs of Omega-3 deficiency? • Fatigue • Poor memory • Immune weakness • Dry skin, eczema, or hair loss • Heart Problems • Reproductive problems (men and women) • Mood swings or depression • Poor circulation What dosage should I take? It is not about how many milligrams of fish oil you are taking that needs to be considered, but the dosage of EPA and DHA in each 1000mg fish oil tablet. Every brand will be different so it is important to look on the side of the bottle and work out how many tablets you need to take to have 1000mg of EPA. Most tablets will give you around 220mg of EPA per tablet, so you would need 5 per day, some tablets have less. It is best to look for fish oil supplements that have a higher dosage of EPA and DHA per tablet so that you only have to take 2 tablets per day. EPA will assist with
the heart, joints etc while DHA will support the brain. If you are taking fish oils to support the brain then look for one that has more DHA than EPA. If you are taking your fish oils in a dosage less than 1000mg of EPA and approximately 500mg of DHA per day, don’t expect to receive the full benefits from it. It is best to take fish oils with food for better absorption. If you experience repeat burping or a bad taste, your supplement may be rancid, or your body may not be manufacturing lipase, the digestive enzyme our bodies make to digest fats and oils. Are there any interactions between fish oils and my medication? Please consult your GP, pharmacist, or a qualified Naturopath before taking fish oil if you are allergic to iodine, using blood thinners such as Warfarin, taking high doses of aspirin, or anticipating surgery. Rebecca Lang is the Naturopath and Owner of Bargara Beach Holistic Health Centre, phone (07) 41591 834. Rebecca is also available from Coral Coast Pharmacy at the Bundaberg Plaza Shopping Centre every Wednesday.

How much is peace of mind really costing you? With the increase of Funeral Insurance advertising, it seems every second advert on the television lately is about another insurance company selling Funeral Insurance. All want to get your money but have really investigated what you are getting? Like any financial advice it is always a good idea to investigate what you are really being offered and whether it really suits you or if it only suits your insurers pockets.
Some consideration should be given to your investment including whether an Insurance or a Bond is better for you and how much you will need to plan for based on what you want from your funeral service. Like a Will, planning now will help your family in knowing what you want.
A person who is 60 year old can pay up to $80,000 more than is required
As an example, a person who is 60 year old can pay up to $80,000 more than is required over the rest of their life.
Your investment should be tax effective and both Centrelink and DVA pension friendly. Your funeral benefit should also allow your family quick and easy access when it is required.
Your peace of mind should not cost you more than it needs to. It is important to seek the right advice from the right funeral director. For truth and honesty speak to the staff at Rose Chapel Funerals about your pre-planning funeral options for your specific situation.

Tech Talk & Tips Well the scammers are still at it, no matter how many warnings people still let them onto their computer, they work on averages of scoring one in 20 calls at an average of $250 a time, eight times a day = $10,000 a week, not bad is it, it’s nearly always the people who can least afford it like aged pensioners, AMS Computers reports two more of their customers got stung last month. Microsoft has not, and does not ever ring their customers, DO NOT give anyone access to your computer no matter what, if someone calls saying they are from Microsoft tell them you do not have a computer, or that your telephone has a trace on it or just hang up, not only does it cost you $250 plus but you will need your computer repaired and it can cost you another $250, because once they have remote access to your computer they turn things off and demand more money, if someone rings and tells you that you have serious viruses hang up and ring someone such as AMS Computers. Another scam that’s going around is itinerants that move in, rent a house, and then send out flyers pretending to be computer technicians; they offer 50% off and no callout fees. Their brochures or flyers look impressive but they can cost you big time, first tip is look for an address if it’s a private address and not a shop don’t go, if there is no landline phone number, just a mobile number, leave it alone, how many of you reading this are computer literate? These backyarders are not registered and unqualified, stick to
a local repair centre. If a brochure comes through your letterbox with repairs etc for next to nothing and discounts of 50 per cent etc beware! Here’s a couple of tips for you new computer users, to delete completely, whether it is a song, a letter or anything else, right click on it, hold down the shift key (left hand bottom) then simply click delete at the same time, this saves emptying the recycle bin. Here’s another tip for sending emails and photo’s, first open your Outlook Express, then click attach, this is situated at the top and looks like a paper clip, sort out your folder with the photos in it you require and click on that, this will give you a list of all your photo’s in that folder, hold down the control key (bottom left) and click each picture you want to send, then simply click attach again, fill out your email and click send. Another way is to just open your photo folder, hold down the control key (bottom left) and click the six or so photo’s you want to send, right click on one of the blue highlighted ones a menu will pop up, click the Send To and then Email Recipient, it will now ask if you want your photos made smaller click, yes, next your email will appear with your photos attached. Here’s another, you have a folder with 50 or so music tracks in it and you want to pick, say 15, out to do a CD, here’s what you do, double click the folder to open it, click the two boxes (top right) put your cursor on the blue line at the top and drag over to the left, this will give you half a screen,
right click on the screen, go to folder and click, name you folder, say new CD, double click the folder to open it repeat the last action with the two boxes but this time go to the right, this will give you a double screen, go to your songs on the left, hold down the control key (bottom left) and then click on the songs you require, next right click on one of the highlighted songs, click copy, move your cursor to the open blank folder on your right, then right click and click paste and it’s done. If you are filling out a form such as the census recently, instead of moving your cursor (pointer) every time to fill in the next question, just click the Tab key (middle left) this will move you to the next space. HOME & GARDEN
Take time to smell the Roses...
Your monthly gardening guide brought to you by ‘Bundaberg Wholesale Palms & Plants’
Spring is here! The roses have arrived and they are just stunning. So many varieties to choose from. The ‘Red Cross’ rose is a strong grower and has a strong red flower. The ‘Love-in’ flower is a psychedelic colour mixture of red and yellow. ‘Honour’ Hybrid Tea has a beautiful classic white flower. Rose care really isn’t that hard. A simple guide to follow is once your rose has had a flush of flower, prune back and fertilise with Supergrowth, Prolific Blue or a complete rose food. This should be approximately every 6 weeks. Another rose secret is to keep the garden mulched with sugar cane or tea tree mulch. A well fertilised and mulched rose with regular pruning attracts far less problems. As the warmer humid weather kicks in then a protective coat of fungicide/insecticide is good to prevent black spot or red spider mite. A general purpose rose spray will cover all of this. So take time out and smell the roses!
Spring is also time to get the lawn green and lush again. Fertilise with Prolific Blue or Urea but remember to water in well. We can provide you with three varieties of turf for your yard. Simply the regular couch ‘Wintergreen’ for full sun areas. Empire Zoysia for a thick lush lawn with a slightly broader leaf which tolerates up to 75% shade otherwise full sun. Empire is a thicker grower not allowing much weed invasion and less mowing required than other turf varieties. Lastly is ‘Sir Walter’ Buffalo. Excellent for heavier shade areas or full sun. Very poplar by those that like a broader leaf turf. We have growing examples of our turf so pop into Bundaberg Wholesale Palms to have a look. Our new ‘Organic’ premium soil is also proving very popular for new gardens. Rich in organic matter with a portion of sandy loam mixed through for drainage. So call in and visit, see all the colour of spring on display, enjoy our range of gifts and water features and browse through our ample supply of pots and garden art in our new pot yard. So why not create an atmosphere in your garden and sit back and enjoy. Enjoy your gardening! If you have any handy hints for the garden you would like to share, email them to: editor@tradiesandladies. com.au or if you have a pest or plant you would like help identifying, send a photo to us and we will endeavour to identify them for you.
