FOOD THE U.S. IMPORTS

Traian Jikovski

The US imports nearly 15 percent of its annual food demand. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the country imports 94 percent of its seafood, 55 percent of its fruit consumptions, and 32 percent of its fresh vegetables from over 200 countries. Importing food to the country is a process that is highly regulated by multiple agencies to ensure quality and safety. Here are some of the essential foods imported into the country to meet the high demand and supplements of local production.

The high demand for fruits and nuts in the country prompts the importation from other countries, such as Mexico and Costa Rica. The country sources its nuts from different countries, including Brazil nuts from South America, cashew nuts from India, Vietnam, and Africa, macadamia nuts from Guatemala, and pine nuts from Spain. Some of the major fruits that are imported into the country include bananas, pineapples, apples, melons, mangos, and blueberries; all imported from tropical countries to supplement local production.

VEGETABLES

The country pumps billions of dollars into the importation of vegetables from countries where production is of the highest quality. Mexico, in particular, has dominated the supply of vegetables into the country, with tomatoes, peppers, corn, cucumbers, broccoli, cabbage, celery, and squash pouring into the country. Countries, such as Peru and Canada, supply carrots, mushrooms, asparagus, and potatoes to suffice local demand.

RED MEAT

The demand for red meat in the country is far more than local production. Although the country produces about 52 billion pounds of meat each year, it still imports billions of tons of meat supplies from other countries. Canada has dominated the meat supply to the US, where it imports beef and pork. Additional supplies into the country are sourced from New Zealand, Australia, and Uruguay where meat farming is of high quality.

Seafood tops the list of the highest-imported food into the country. Billions of dollars’ worth of seafood is imported from China each year. The demand for farm-raised seafood, including salmon, tilapia, catfish, squid, lobster, crab, and shrimp from China is on its all-time high. The entire seafood shipping industry is well facilitated by the existence of direct shipping routes from China to the US, where refrigeration ensures perfect freshness.
