Ways To Avoid Food Waste Traian Jikovski

Food is a valuable and, at times, an expensive commodity that many people throughout the world struggle to obtain. To many, wasting food is a sin. Fortunately, such malfeasance may be avoided by adhering to practices including:

Buy Only What Is Needed When many individuals grocery shop, they purchase an exorbitant amount of products. Shopping experts suggest one way to avoid wasting food is to purchase only what the buyer needs for themselves and their families. Granted, this task might be easier said than done. However, shoppers who create a list of essential products budgeted out over a specific duration are more likely to purchase excess food.

Store Only What Is Needed Such advice might seem relatively straight forward and plain common sense. However, many shoppers fail to properly store food. Certain foods, particularly produce items and other perishable products must be refrigerated under specific conditions in order to avoid quick spoilage and waste. Additionally, the makers and manufacturers of some perishable items give specific instructions regarding how their products should be maintained. Adhering to such directions may maintain freshness for extended periods.

Avoid Cluttered Food Storage Locations Food preservation experts opine that maintaining cluttered food storage locations such as refrigerators and pantries often contributes to significant quantities of food getting wasted. Typically, clutter often breeds clutter. Eventually, storage spaces become so stuffed that certain products must be eliminated to make room for new ones. However, in many cases, the products being tossed are not outdated but there is simply no place left to keep them.

Do Not Toss Leftovers Saving leftovers does not simply mean eating a recently cooked item over a period of a few days. Often, many foods can be packaged and frozen for weeks and, in some cases, months after such items were originally prepared. Saving foods for such purposes prevents potential waste on two fronts. Old items stand a better chance of being consumed at a later time and new items might not have to be bought and stored right away.

Familiarize Oneself With Important Storage Dates Many products are stamped with specific future dates. Many people perceive these occasions as expiration dates that dictate the time when the product in question will no longer be safe to consume. However, such beliefs are not always correct. Certain products are labeled “sell by” and “best if consumed by” followed by a specific date. These labels are merely suggestions referencing when these products will be the freshest but typically do not mean they will be unsafe to eat.
