Traidcraft’s Tweet of the Month This month’s star Tweet goes to Corpus Christi Primary School who held a mini competition during Fairtrade Fortnight, cutting out and sticking down Fairtrade logos they spotted on their favourite products, onto their competition cards. We love the idea of this game! “We’re really enjoying our fabulous @CorpusChristi_K Fairtrade Committees competition to fill up our chart with @FairtradeUK logos! We’ve only 11 more logos to be in with a chance of winning. Good luck everyone!”

Repurposing Traidcraft Boxes You may remember a few Bulletins ago, we saw Traidcraft boxes being used for entertaining grandchildren, drying Christmas tree branches and even housing a newborn lamb!

Since then, we’ve had an influx of you getting in touch, telling us how you recycle and reuse our boxes after they’ve safely delivered your fair trade goodies.

Please keep them coming. Here are some of our favourites!

Peter Metcalf, founder of GIFT 92, receiving boxes

“Dear friends, I thought you might like to see this picture of one of your boxes being recycled charitably. My friend sends lots of boxfuls - as you can see - of clothes to a charity in Uganda. All the boxes of the right size which I receive and in good condition now make another journey overseas. She likes your boxes because they are sturdy". Best wishes, Robin Pencavel

(Thornbury Churches Together)

“I found the perfect solution to disposing of my empty Traidcraft boxes a few years ago and have been passing on my boxes to GIFT 92 ever since. GIFT 92 is a charity which was set up during Preston Guild 1992 and helps people with limited finance and receiving state benefits to furnish a property. GIFT 92 supplies essential furniture and household items to help them create a home and the Traidcraft boxes I pass on are used in boxing items up". Anne Garsed

Dear Fairtrader We hope you had a successful Easter period and managed to enjoy some relaxing time with friends and family, amidst your busy selling season. Well what a month May has in store for us! A bumper Bank Holiday month ending with celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee. Whether you’re heading to a garden party, summer fete or having a street party for the occasion, we hope there is a Traidcraft product or two accompanying your celebrations. Do let us know, and send us any photos of your summer dos. Finally, you’ll see on page 9 that we’re hosting a crafty Jubilee competition, with some very exciting prizes to be won. In the last few weeks, the situation in Sri Lanka has worsened with daily power cuts lasting for hours at a time and long queues for fuel as well as a steeply increasing cost of living. There have been protests widely across the country.

An Update from Just Trading Scotland’s Tracy Mitchell “Working in fair trade with producer partners in six countries in Africa and the Indian subcontinent, there are times when a new story catches my attention in a way it might not otherwise. When a container ship blocked the Suez Canal, I was immediately mentally checking where our products were on route and wondering about the impact, or when COVID rates escalated in South Africa and then India, my thoughts were with our producers there and likewise when there was flooding in Malawi, or protests in Eswatini. Sometimes, there is very little we can do. Sometimes, as in the case of COVID, JTS has responded with an appeal to support the producer groups with hand-washing and education. Most recently, it has been the situation in Sri Lanka that has made the headlines. It is, no doubt, much more complicated than this but, essentially, Sri Lanka has been massively impacted by the lack of foreign exchange following the collapse of the tourism industry in the wake of the Easter Sunday bombings in 2019 and travel restrictions related to COVID. The economic crisis is severe. 8

traidcraftshop.co.uk

We have been in contact with the team at Ma’s Tropical Food Processing, our producer partner in Sri Lanka, to understand how this is affecting them and to see if there is anything practical that we can do at JTS to help. Their feedback was that “the situation on the ground is as bad as it looks… It seems almost every part of the island is having a large protest.” Ma’s are predicting food shortages a few months away. When the news headlines are so full of really tough situations, at home and abroad, it can be hard to know how to respond. In this situation, particularly given Sri Lanka’s need for export earnings, one very practical thing we can all do is support the work of amazing fair trade producers like Ma’s by buying their products. JTS has stock of their Fairtrade and Organic Coconut Milk and their Organic Curry Pastes, as well as an order in production in Sri Lanka that will provide some much needed income for Ma’s and their producer communities. We will continue to be in touch with Ma’s and let you know if there are other ways we can support them.”

Turning a small farm into a strong business This spring, we are celebrating farming entrepreneurs in Kenya who are proving trade is a powerful tool to build secure futures, for themselves and their families. Munyis Kinyaga is doing exactly that, by turning his small farm into a strong business. Munyis was not always a farmer; he grew up as a herdsman, protecting his family’s livestock while his siblings attended school. This education gave his siblings opportunities: “My brothers have studied, they have put in that effort to the point where they are able to earn their living using papers (certificates, diplomas and degrees)”. Recognising Munyis’ sacrifice, his father bought him a farm in Manyagalo. With no farming experience, this was a blessing but also a challenge for Munyis. Ambitious and hardworking, he grasped every opportunity to learn, not only taking on training in crop yields, trusted seed suppliers and negotiation, but also by volunteering a portion of his land as a demonstration farm and joining a farmers group. Today, Munyis’s farm is as successful a business as his brothers’ formal jobs, and once again, his hard work is benefitting others - all four of his children go to school. “I have to educate them,” Munyis says emphatically. “If I didn’t make it to school, then let them.” Munyis Kinyaga, farming entrepreneur, Kenya Credit: Traidcraft Exchange/Ian Gatere 12 traidcraftshop.co.uk

We would like to say a massive thank you to all our Big Brew hosts and guests, for every cup of coffee brewed, delicious cake baked, and all the fun games you played. The funds raised by your hard work and support will make a real difference in the lives of the producers and artisans who are building a fairer world through trade. If you hosted a Big Brew and haven’t had a chance to send us your donations, you can pay them in at: www.traidcraftexchange.org/bigbrew
