A special shout out this month has to go to our very own Kirsty. When she’s not selecting the very best third party products to offer to you all, she’s using her evenings, flexitime and holidays to volunteer as a St. John’s Ambulance COVID-19 vaccinator! Well done Kirsty, what a brilliant thing to be a part of.

International Women's Day Monday 8 thHow Marchwill 2021you

help forg

Earlier in the month, we celebrated International Women's Day. International Women’s Day is a day where we come together to celebrate women's achievements, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality.

#ChooseToChallenge This year’s theme was #ChooseToChallenge. A challenged world is an alert world; from challenge comes change.

So, let's all choose to challenge.

4

traidcraftshop.co.uk

#IWD2021

Individually, we're all responsible for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day. We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women's achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. International Women’s Day 2021’s uniting symbol is holding your hand up high, to show you’re in, and that you commit to choosing to challenge and call out inequality. Are you in? We are.

Cycle of Good’s Elephant Bikes You’ve probably heard about Cycle of Good by now, but if you haven’t, here’s a brief introduction to this forward-thinking enterprise. Cycle of Good create lasting products with a purpose; helping to end poverty in some of the poorest communities in the world, along with recycling waste and caring for the environment. Traidcraft are a Christian response to poverty, with trade, social and environmental justice at our core, which is why we are such huge fans of this scheme! The trading surpluses fund education, family support and life-changing, nonprofit enterprise development in Malawi. RECYCLE YOUR TUBES

6

traidcraftshop.co.uk

Cycle of Good collect waste inner tubes and other recycled materials from the UK, and ship them in containers to Malawi, which are packed full of donated bikes and school equipment. The trained, fairly paid artisans, who work at the Cycle of Good social enterprise, will carefully craft into useful and beautiful items. They ship all of these amazing products back to the UK, where they are sold and surplus profit funds a children's centre built within the hub of social enterprises in Malawi. And so, the cycle of good continues…

However, not only are they finding new and innovative ways to recycle waste bound for landfill, they’re also transforming the lives of many people in Malawi with Elephant Bikes.

SHOP CYCLE OF GOOD

BUY A BIKE, GIVE A BIKE Cycle of Good is also home to Elephant Bike. When you buy a bike for yourself, a bike is sent to someone living in Malawi. This short film shows how a bike can really help someone to earn a living in Malawi; Tim (aka Mr Woza Woza) has now taken on extra helpers, so he is employing others and he sends his chilli sauce to shops across the region. What a success story!

SHARED EARTH GO

100% CARBON-NEUTRAL

Shared Earth was founded in 1986 on fair trade/eco principles and celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, as one of York’s oldest independent retailers. It is also one of the fastest growing wholesalers in the UK, having increased sales by more than 30% each year for the last 7 years. It sells to over 1,000 businesses across the UK and abroad, and was recently recognized by the Parliamentary Review as a UK leader in its field.

AS A BUSINESS, WE WANT TO DO ALL WE CAN TO PROTECT OUR PLANET. BUT HOW TO AVOID THE CARBON EMISSIONS CREATED BY SHIPPING GOODS ACROSS THE WORLD? IT’S A DILEMMA FOR ALL IMPORTERS.

WHY NOT HEAR IT FROM SHARED EARTH THEMSELVES? Shared Earth has become the first importer in the UK gift, fashion and homeware sector to decarbonize its shipping, by changing from fossil fuels to biofuels. From January 2021, our whole supply chain (air, road and sea), will be 100% carbon-neutral, resulting in CO2 emissions of ZERO! Globally, transport accounts for 15% of all CO2 emissions today, a figure which could be as much as 60% by 2050. 90% of the products we buy in the UK – food, clothing, furniture – arrive here by ship. And the maritime industry burns the dirtiest fuel in the world. It’s time to clean the decks… Shared Earth is working with GoodShipping, a sustainability pioneer in the Netherlands, and switching from fossil fuels to biofuels. These biofuels are made from waste. 8

traidcraftshop.co.uk

They don’t compete with food production, nor do they involve any change in land use, deforestation or loss of biodiversity. “When we heard of GoodShipping, we jumped straight on board! They work on the ‘mass balance’ principle, whereby the volume of biofuel that will neutralize our emissions is fuelled into another ship that would otherwise have run on fossil fuels. As all CO2 from shipping is emitted into the same atmosphere, reducing these emissions is equally effective, regardless of which ship uses the biofuels. This approach allows for immediate impact, whilst having the same net effect in reducing global emissions and averting climate change. We’re also extending this approach so it covers the journeys by truck from our producers to their overseas port, and deliveries from our warehouse to our customers in the UK.

With weather patterns changing, floods, fires and droughts on the up, the world faces potential disaster. We still have time to prevent this catastrophe, however. But we need to act now! Businesses can play a huge part in reducing carbon emissions, saving our oceans and our wildlife. What type of products are we selling? Are raw materials sustainable? Are fossil fuels a significant factor in production, packaging and transportation? Shared Earth is already a UK leader in supplying low or zero carbon recycled and sustainable products. Now, their transport will be completely carbon-free too.

Demand for products which will help slow global warming is increasing rapidly; they’re all the rage today. Ironically, businesses which ditch the traditional business mantra of ‘growth, growth, growth’, and opt for sustainability instead, tend to increase their sales, as concern about these issues grows. Public support for tackling climate change is at its highest ever.” “If we don’t act on climate change, will future generations be asking, “why didn’t you act while you had the chance?” Or will history thank us for what we did to save the world?”

Product Update from Kirsty & Lizy Item Delays You may have noticed that some of our craft and grocery items from the spring 2021 catalogue, such as some of the rainbow crockery items, and the new pulses range, are not in stock yet. We are really disappointed by this and hope that it hasn’t caused you too much inconvenience. The delay is due to COVID and Brexit slowing down delivery considerably. We are working hard with our suppliers in order to get these items into stock as soon as possible. We had hoped that delaying the delivery of the catalogue would eliminate this happening. The situation is difficult for many of our producers around the globe; however, please be assured we are committed to supporting our producers and partners through

this period and to bring their products to you as soon as we can. We have an estimated time of arrival for the following items, which we hope you will find useful. Apologies again for this delay. It's Only Fair

FA I R T R A D E S H O P

You can find them in the lovely village of Earls Barton, Northamptonshire

Here, Nicky, one of our lovely Retailer customers, tells us how her fair trade shop has coped during the past year of being in and out of lockdown.

the year. We did this mainly through occasional emails to church members and through our Facebook page and being generous with catalogues!

Our little fair trade shop in Earls Barton (Northants) was only open during 5 months of 2020 and for half our normal hours, due to many of our volunteers having to selfisolate. Despite this, our sales held up well and we were actually only about 10% down on the previous 2 years.

We were also fortunate to be able to hold our annual Christmas shopping preview evening just before the November lockdown, which enabled quite a lot of customers to see and order from the range within a sociallydistanced booking system.

It helps that we're in a large village community and it's very much a church project, so a lot of loyal customers helped us out buying up all our Easter eggs last year as well as other stock throughout 12 traidcraftshop.co.uk

January started very quietly of course but we are starting to get a few requests in now. We're hoping the new catalogues and Easter range will help sales pick up and are also trying to think of some

ideas for Fairtrade Fortnight. Fortunately, because our set up is within the church hall building, we are able to run the shop overhead-free which means that we don't have the challenges that many other retailers would have. I hope that gives you a feel for where we are at the moment. I have attached a pic someone took of me on our first day of opening in July after the first lockdown. Very best wishes.

Nicky

Meet the Regenerators - and Have Your Donations Doubled..

In the villages across Tanzania and Bangladesh where Traidcraft Exchange works, no one asks if climate change is real. And ‘what will we eat now the floods have washed away our crops?’

Between 8th March and 7th June 2021, Traidcraft Exchange, the UK’s trade justice charity, will run the Regenerators appeal – supporting those living on the frontline of the climate crisis to take action by investing in new, eco-friendly businesses, planting climate friendly crops, and using green technology like solar panels and irrigation.

The climate crisis is hitting those living in poverty the hardest.

For people like Monira, in rural Bangladesh, the project is already having an incredible impact.

But the people who are living with the devastating effects of climate change are fighting back, and they need your support.

“We are already very poor, and this climate change is making our days miserable (but) this project is changing our lives and making us aware about climate change.

They ask, 'When will the rains come?'

You can make DOUBLE the difference this Spring, as all donations made between 8th March and 7th June 2021 will be matched by the UK government. DONATE HERE 14 traidcraftshop.co.uk

We learn and understand something new from this project in every meeting. We are trying to plant trees. We no longer want to be dependent on agricultural work only. We are trying to learn different skills of income. Together when we stand side by side, we are able to deal with many problems.”

Together, the Regenerators are taking a stand against climate change. With basic climate friendly technology, knowledge and skills about how to adapt to erratic weather patterns through things like growing new crops and investing in beehives or fisheries, communities will be able to earn more from the hard work they already do. They can come together, learn new skills, and take action to prevent climate change – through protecting forests and soil. These changes mean that whatever the climate crisis throws at them, they’ll be able to feed their families and earn a decent income.

How to get involved and have your support DOUBLED this spring Donate at: www.traidcraftexchange.org/regenerators Buy raffle tickets at: www.traidcraftexchange.org/raffle Hold a Big Brew-Easter (virtual or otherwise) – find all the resources you need at: www.traidcraftexchange.org/bigbrew

With your help, and donations doubled by the UK government, they can protect the earth for generations to come - and earn more for the hard work they do every day. Donate to Traidcraft Exchange’s Regenerators Appeal between 8th March and 7th June 2021 and the UK government will double your gift to help the most vulnerable stand strong in the face of climate change. Together, we can turn the tide. To learn more, sign up to updates, or donate, visit www.traidcraftexchange.org/regenerators

HAZELNUT AND RED PEPPER ROAST INGREDIENTS 1 onion 4 oz (125g) mushrooms 1 red pepper 2 tbsp milled flax seed soaked in 6 tbsp cold water 1 clove garlic 4 oz (125g) wholemeal breadcrumbs Olive oil for frying Salt and pepper to taste 4 oz (125g) chopped or ground hazelnuts ½ jar Meru Herbs Hot Chilli Pesto METHOD 1. Fry chopped onion in olive oil

Big thanks to Traidcraft customer, Val Rudd for sending us her recipe! “I thought I would send you my newly invented recipe (as of January 2021) for a nut roast, suitable for vegans and vegetarians and meat-eaters who don't mind not eating meat!” - Val Top tip: Make twice the above mix. Generously line a loaf tin with foil and put in half of your doublemix. Wrap the foil around so that the top of the loaf is covered i.e. the whole roast is foiled. Place in the freezer and, when completely frozen, remove from the tin. The tin can go back in the cupboard for use while the nut roast remains frozen until needed. Bake defrosted, as above, in the aforementioned tin.
