WELCOME Hi, Jo here, welcome to the June edition of Living Fair. It’s great to have you here. Well, who would have thought we have been delivering Living Fair to inboxes now for one whole year now? The idea for Living Fair came in recognition of a new group of supporters that felt we could be important to them during lockdown, and we were ever so glad we were. At the time we were taking a lot longer to deliver (7-10 days) than we do now, which was mainly down to lockdown demand. You will know now delivery is a lot quicker and your support is still needed. We hope you have enjoyed the journey and you have seen enough of us to like what you see; enjoy our products and content we share. Thank you for your support, as it is this that allows us to do a little good in the world, through your everyday shopping.

Kirsty “I love our beer bread range – especially now there’s an extra flavour to choose from. They’re a great price point, easy to use and produce delicious results. I especially like that they come in a bag which has been handsewn by the charity Deaf Hands at Work – when I gifted some of these to family and friends last year, this was the point that got them talking the most!”

TRAIDCRAFT STAFF TOP PICKS Our highly coveted summer catalogue is here! So, it’s over to Team Traidcraft to let you in on what they’re loving this season.

Lizy “It might sound a bit of a strange choice, but I am a huge fan of Traidcraft washing up gloves. This season they’re a lovely blue colour – making a boring job that little bit more exciting. Plus, I find they don’t puncture like regular washing up gloves, meaning they’ll last so much longer.”

FREE DELIVERY Over the past year and a half, the supply chains we rely on have suffered. Brexit, Covid and reduced availability of shipping containers were among many hurdles they’ve faced. As you will be aware, this has resulted in delays and out of stocks on the products you know and love. As a valued customer, we want to do all we can to show you that we sympathise and understand that it is frustrating. As a shortterm measure, and to kick off Traidcraft Week celebrations, we are reducing your minimum spend for free delivery to £35. We hope that this will make it easier for you to reach the minimum threshold, even if one of the items you’ve had your eye on is currently out of stock.

TRAIDCRAFT’S GUIDE TO

Attracting Pollinators TO YOUR GARDEN OR OUTDOOR SPACE

Pollination is essential for the survival of many things, including around one third of crop production. Climate change is contributing to the rapid decline of pollinators, such as bees, wasps and beetles, which is having a devastating effect on the planet. Here are some of our top tips for attracting pollinators to your garden! Check out your summer catalogue for more detailed information, as well as a guide to building your own bee hotel.

1. 2. 3.

LESS WEEDING Many plants which we consider pesky weeds, are actually a pollinator’s dream. Dandelions and lawn clover, for example, provide vital pollen for many species of bee.

PLANT CHOICE Foxgloves, lavender and sunflowers, will attract no end of pollinators, all season long. Plants like fennel and dill are also good to have in your garden, as butterfly larvae feed on them.

4.

CREATE A BEE HOTEL Bee hotels attract solitary species of bee to your garden, as they’re a safe place where they can breed and lay their eggs. See our summer catalogue (page 84) for for a simple guide on how to make your own bee hotel from recycled materials.

AVOID USING HARMFUL PESTICIDES Rather than using traditional, chemical-filled pesticides or insecticides, which are detrimental to wildlife and soil, you could consider a more natural solution. Having plants which attract ‘good bugs’ to your garden – i.e., the creatures whose diet includes the pests and larvae that are feeding on your plants, is the perfect way to combat the problem and take care of the planet at the same time. See your summer catalogue for an example of this!

Freekeh is one of Zaytoun’s best-selling products. It’s a traditional alternative to rice and has been grown in Palestine for over 4,000 years. We hand over to our friends at Zaytoun, to tell you all about this versatile store cupboard essential…

GET FREEKEH WITH US! We love how you’ve all embraced our freekeh from Palestine! It’s delicious, packed full of goodness and versatile - we love it in everything from soups and stuffed peppers to veggie burgers and nut-roasts. It also makes the most flavoursome standalone pilaf or base for a risotto. To celebrate the freekeh harvest, we’re sharing our favourite freekeh dishes using the hashtag #GetFreekehWithUs and we’d love you to join in! At this time of year in Palestine, farmers harvest the long sheaves of spring wheat before flame-roasting them in the fields to produce delicious freekeh. With a subtle yet moreish smoky flavour, this nutritious grain holds a firm texture making it ideal for so many dishes. No wonder the Great Taste judges were bowled over by it and awarded it a star in 2017!

SO MANY WAYS TO GET FREEKEH! We love the unique flavour and texture that freekeh brings to salads, risottos and pilafs, as well as veggie favourites like burgers and nut roasts. It’s also delicious as an accompaniment to roasted vegetables and meats.  Traditionally it is slowly simmered in stock for a nourishing soup, a Palestinian staple for centuries. Use it to make a stuffing for your Sunday roast and thank us later!

8

traidcraftshop.co.uk

DID YOU KNOW? Legend has it that green wheat freekeh was discovered by accident. One spring, millennia ago, a Mediterranean village was attacked by invading armies causing the villagers to flee. When they returned later that spring, they found their wheat crop, their source of livelihood, had been set on fire. Faced with the prospect of starvation, they rubbed off (fareek) the husk, to see what could be salvaged.  Thanks to the high moisture level in the milky, green kernels, it was not burnt but much to

their surprise, it was perfectly roasted and imbued with a wonderfully smoky aroma.  Today, farmers in Palestine replicate this ancient process by harvesting wheat in the spring, while it’s still green, before flameroasting it and finally rubbing off the husks.

A letter from Traidcraft Exchange Chief Executive, Charlotte Timson regarding the India and Bangladesh COVID situation. Dear Friends, You will have seen on the news the devastating impact that COVID is having in India. Every day, we see more and more people struggling to get their families and friends to hospitals, to get access to oxygen. It is a desperate situation. At Traidcraft Exchange, we are doing everything we can to keep our staff, partners and the communities we work with safe. There isn’t anyone who is unaffected. Everyone is doing what they can to help colleagues who are sick and whose families need urgent help. I’m sad to say, that the situation is far worse than the official data being shared would have us believe. COVID is spreading into the rural areas. Villages that were isolated and protected from the virus last year are now being affected. And while the major cities might have been locked down, social distancing isn’t possible in these communities. While Bangladesh has mostly stayed out of the news, this new wave has already started to spread. The situation there is getting worse by the day. Hospitals are overwhelmed in Dhaka and oxygen supplies are running out. Many of the communities we work with have little or no healthcare to rely on. We are doing what we can to help in this emergency. We are ensuring people have correct information about COVID.

12 traidcraftshop.co.uk

We have been working hard to ensure marginalised populations are included in local government vaccinations programmes, where these have existed. And we are coordinating with others, to ensure that people know where to get help. And beyond this immediate health crisis, there is the growing economic crisis. Homeworkers in India’s garment sector have no work. Migrant workers have had to travel once again back to their villages, without work or food. Small scale farmers who are harvesting their crops can’t sell them in the markets. Thanks to the support that many of you gave last year to our Recovery Appeal, we’ve already been able to support some of the communities most affected. And we know that we will have a lot to do to help people survive and recover again. Once again, we are working closely with our partners to revise our plans and will share more with you in coming weeks. But right now, I wanted to write to share something of how serious this situation is - and to reassure you that we are doing everything we can to support the people we work with in India and Bangladesh. We will be in touch with more information as soon as we can.

Tree planting nears target… and there’s still time to get involved and Plant an Acre! As part of the Regenerators appeal you’ve helped us raise enough money to plant a whopping 580 acres of fruit trees – that’s the equivalent of 387 football pitches. We’re hoping to plant a total of 630 acres – with just 50 acres still to be sponsored, can you help us get over the line and sponsor an acre for just £50? Each acre sponsored will help the Regenerators grow trees which will help them restore their land and their livelihoods for generations to come. The Plant an Acre initiative started on Earth Day and has been supported by Urban Green Newcastle and our friends at Traidcraft plc alongside other community groups and businesses. A tree was planted in Heaton Park, Newcastle in solidarity with the Regenerators to mark the beginning of the initiative Maveen Pereira, Head of Programmes at Traidcraft Exchange, explains how these trees will make a difference: “The climate crisis is happening now and those most vulnerable

are being hit the hardest. Drought and flooding - desert summers and bitter winters - lightning strikes and river erosion mean the crops needed to feed families are failing. By using green technology and planting new, climate resistant trees to protect their land, communities can fight back against the climate crisis.” Traidcraft spokesperson Jude Allen said: “We’ve pledged to raise £4000 to plant 80 acres of trees to support the Plant an Acre initiative. Plant an Acre gives us, as a business, the opportunity to add to our commitment to fight back against climate change while supporting producers. It’s also a great way to support our sister charity and get staff involved in something so positive coming out of lockdown.” Our aim is to have planted 630 acres of trees by the time the Regenerators Appeal ends on 7th June – but we need your help!. Can you help us get over the line? Click the button below to Plant an Acre. Please note, any monies raised over and above the amount need to plant trees will support our wider work on similar projects around the world.
