Thirty years ago, Rails-to-Trails began converting unused railroad beds into trails suitable for bicycling, horseback riding, walking, rollerblading, and similar activities. Thanks to their ongoing work, over 30,000 miles of unused railroad tracks have given way to wide, smooth, relatively flat trails offering great visibility and in many cases, scenic views. Some of these trails run over 50 miles. Best of all, trail users don’t have to share their route with motor vehicles. More information: bit.ly/1TFqzGS Getting Around England by Boat

The famous long-distance trails of today (think Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, etc.) didn’t start out all intact and looking like they do today. Enormous amounts of ongoing planning and revising go into trails like these, with a heavy reliance on debate and public input. You can be part of history as the Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) continues to spread its white blazes across North Carolina (1,150 total miles planned). Give your feedback and ideas in a survey being administered by the folks who are building and maintaining that trail, the Friends of the MST.
