MESSAGE from MARGUERITE For many of us, the season of spring signifies a time of transformation. Days are longer, temperatures are rising, buds are blooming and everything around us is coming to life. Although spring arrives in full bloom at different times across the country, it brings with it a sense of renewal, a new beginning. You have to admit we all seem to have renewed energy and excitement about new beginnings. Maybe it’s because we know the official summer camping season is upon us. Our property teams share this same excitement. Many have been busy during the off-season, weather permitting of course, making updates and improvements to the campgrounds. For example, we’re working on a new Tiny House Village at our Leavenworth campground with five feet of snow on the ground. And, we have just recently added two new tiny house units, affectionately known as Finn and Rose, to our rental accommodations at Verde Valley.

I do want to take this time to recognize the efforts of our employees who consistently provide support to our members and guests. I read many comments and surveys from our customers acknowledging the efforts of our teams across the country. I appreciate your input and I encourage each of you to continue to share your feedback so that we can work together to improve our operations. So, now that spring is officially in the air, I encourage each of you to plan your next camping adventure at a favorite Thousand Trails campground near you! Check out what we’ve been up to in the off season and trust us, we’re just as excited to get out and camp as you are!

RVing is a great adventure and there’s always something new to learn! by Paul and Kerri Elders This month, we’ll take a quick look at some diesel engine tips and see what benefits just a tiny bit of planning can yield. Let’s get going! Diesel Engine Power Tips Diesel engines have been a popular choice for powering Class A motorhomes and a variety of tow vehicles, like pickup trucks, for years. Diesels are known for exceptional ruggedness and towing power; these engines develop high torque at relatively low engine RPM’s, which translates into greater pulling power at cooler operating temperatures, producing less internal friction on engine parts. Initially more expensive than gas models, diesels often repay their increase in outlay cost many times over in both fuel economy and in their longer engine life. They do add significantly to an RV’s weight. Generally speaking, the proper operating RPM for a diesel engine is between 1500-2100 RPM. This is the RPM level where the engine is most efficient and develops its optimal horsepower. If you have a manual transmission, simply select the gear that allows your engine to run in its optimum RPM range without having to over-accelerate. Your diesel engine will run cooler and will be more fuel efficient if you avoid putting more fuel in the engine than it can burn (a bad habit called “lugging the engine”). Learn your engine’s “sweet spot” and give it just the amount of acceleration it needs and no more. If you’re a diesel driver, you’ve probably realized that diesel additives can help give your engine a little more power, keeping it cleaner and running smoother. Additives like Power Service Diesel Kleen, Red Line 85 Plus, Stanadyne Performance Formula, etc., are worth exploring.

Diesel “conditioners” can also help keep a diesel engine cleaner by inhibiting microbial growth in diesel fuel. Some additives contain algaecides and fungicides; some simply inhibit microbial growth by absorbing water. Available products include Stabil’s Diesel Fuel Stabilizer and Valvtect BioGuard Microbiocide, among others. If you decide to add any additive to your tank, it’s a good idea to operate the engine long enough for treated fuel to run through all the components. That’s why it’s usually recommended that you add the additive to your tank when fueling your rig. If you’re parked long-term, its generally a good idea to start the engine on your motorhome and your generator’s engine about once a week or so. Allowing the engine to idle a few minutes will help eliminate moisture buildup in the fuel lines and will keep engine and generator parts well-lubricated and in good working order. If in storage, once a month should be adequate. RV 123 Let’s Go! A huge part of the joy of traveling is enjoying the moment, keeping life spontaneous and flexible. But a wee bit of thought devoted to the TIMING of your trips can pay big dividends in keeping your travels easy-breezy with very little traffic stress. If you need to get from Point A to Point B by way of any Major Metropolitan Area (like Dallas), think about scheduling your through-trips so you easily dodge Rush Hour traffic. Simply put, 10 AM beats 6 PM. Nav systems can be a huge help in unfamiliar territory. If your RV is equipped with a navigation system, take a few minutes to learn just what it can do for you. Many systems have

voice guidance with adjustable volume controls so you can easily mute the instructions if you’re caught in heavy traffic and find it annoying, or you can turn the volume up, in case you need a little extra assistance. Many heads-up displays will show distance to the next exit/ turn and the Exit Number in an easy-to-use graphic. But you have to first learn to fully USE your system before you can make the most of its features. Many systems can let you select routing, save common destinations, and even search by phone number or type of business (restaurants, shopping, fuel, etc.). Lots of RVers are surprised by how many extra functions their navigation systems have that they’ve never even discovered. Drag out the handy User’s Manual or see if your model has a built-in tutorial and familiarize yourself with these priceless Electronic Guides. You’ll be glad you did, the next time you’re caught in a traffic jam in an unfamiliar city and want to find a quick way out! Remember, that as a traveler fully equipped with an on-board kitchen and bathroom, you have the power of choice over whether you drive in rush hour traffic or not. If you do get “trapped,” remember that refuge is always just a highway exit away. If you’re stuck in the slow lane at 6PM and want to escape, just take the nearest exit, find a suitable parking spot, and make yourself a delicious sandwich. Wait out the crowd, then resume your trip after your break. Your RV is your ticket to freedom, even in the middle of Rush Hour. Where and when you go is up to you! Happy trails, trailblazers!

Cleveland International Film Festival by Annie Berman The Cleveland International Film Festival is also one of the few Academy-qualifying film festivals. The winners of the “Best Animated Short Film,” “Best Live Action Short Film,” and “Best Documentary Short Film” at the CIFF all qualify for consideration in the Short Films category of the annual Academy Awards®. Last year, Ennemis Intérieurs (“Enemies Within”), a French film that examines Algerian terrorism in 1990s France, was nominated for the Best Short Live Action category for the 2017 Academy Awards.

In addition to film screenings, there will be special events including special panels, talks with filmmakers, social hours, and interactive media events. As technology advances, creators are discovering new ways to tell stories. Last year, to showcase the newest technology in storytelling, CIFF held a special event called, “Perspectives,” a free, public event where visitors could experience submitted films in virtual reality. 3D virtual reality films and interactive experiences that were submitted to the festival included an immersive experience through an insane asylum in "Catatonic" and a psychedelic journey with the Cheshire Cat, soundtracked by legendary '90s rock musician, Damon Albarn of the British band, Blur. Curious to experience an event like this in 2017? Be sure to check the schedule on the festival’s website (clevelandfilm. org), which will be released in early March 2017 (schedule not released at time of publication). The film schedule will also be available at Dollar Bank locations in Ohio.

The team behind the CIFF is dedicated to making sure that the CIFF audience not only has access or is able to view some of the best films from around the world, but that audiences find themselves learning something new or become educated about a culture different from their own.

In an ever-changing world where a broad understanding of different cultures is becoming more and more important, the Cleveland International Film Festival is a fantastic way to experience the creative expression of filmmakers and the important stories they tell. The 2017 Cleveland International Film Festival is at Tower City Cinemas in downtown Cleveland, OH. The city of Cleveland, OH, is only an hour drive from Kenisee Lake in Jefferson, OH.

LeBron James, NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers, and Major League Baseball’s American League champ Cleveland Indians are all back and so is the entire Rock and Roll Capital of the World. Visitors to this revitalized and rocking Rust Belt city are now enjoying more than $3.5 billion in tourist-related infrastructure spending in the area since 2011, with lots of recent updates, additions, events, restaurants, and more making Cleveland rock in a big way. The world’s only Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a great place to start, thanks to an ongoing redesign (“Museum 2.0”) and the opening of “Mellencamp,” an exhibit that opened last November and runs through September, 2017. It showcases more than 100 items from John Mellencamp’s personal collection, including his 1966 Silver Honda Scrambler 305 motorcycle, handwritten lyrics, performance outfits, his

The ever-popular Cleveland attraction now includes a café and seasonal beer garden on its outdoor plaza, with six-foot tall letters that read “Long Live Rock” that make an ideal picture background. In 2017, the redesign will include updates to the main exhibits and to the indoor café, including featured dishes from famed Cleveland chefs like Michael Symon, Jonathon Sawyer, and Rocco Whalen. Cleveland’s ever-changing landscape is also rocking beyond the rock museum’s additions, including the $50 million transformation of downtown Cleveland’s greenspace heart, Public Square, into a public space for concerts, movies, farmers markets, and more. In 2017, the Cleveland Metroparks system (23,000-plus acres in 18 destinations) is celebrating its

Longer-term, the Pro Football Hall of Fame in nearby Canton will open a four-star hotel in 2018 as part of the Hall’s $500 million project, which will include an indoor and outdoor NFL activity center, youth fields, an athletic training and educational complex, more shopping, offices, and – for true football fans – assisted-living center.

On the aforementioned food front, renowned, restaurateur, James Beard Award-winner, Iron Chef star, co-host of ABC’s “The Chew,” and author Michael Symon helped raise awareness of Cleveland’s dynamic dining scene in a big way. He now has more than a half-dozen restaurants – including downtown’s new Mabel’s BBQ, which was inspired by respect and passion for the region’s flavors and Symon’s goal to a create a barbecue style that Clevelanders can call their own. Other restaurant news brewing in downtown Cleveland includes the continued popularity of The Greenhouse Tavern and Noodlecat from equally popular Chef Jonathon Sawyer, who is also a James Beard winner, as well as aforementioned Rocco Whalen’s landmark Fahrenheit restaurant. For great downtown and Lake Erie views, brews, and food, visitors should head to Bar 32 on the 32nd floor of the Hilton Cleveland Downtown or Nuevo Modern Mexican on the North Coast Harbor. Downtown’s Flats East Bank (home of the recently opened donut shop/speakeasy, Magnolia) will be expanding with a first-inthe-nation restaurant from country group Rascal Flatts and a new brewery/brewpub from Cleveland restaurateur Zack Bruell and Great Lakes Brewing Co. veteran brewer Luke Purcell. Other quintessential Cleveland dining can include Sokolowski’s University Inn for

In addition, Masthead Brewing added to the options in downtown Cleveland when it opened its doors earlier this year, while Old City Libations is now open in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. Of course, along with beer and spirits, coffee is also brewing all around Cleveland (see “Ohio Coffee Cultures”).

As with many American cities, including Columbus and Cincinnati, the microbrewery scene in Cleveland is exploding. The Ohio City neighborhood (home of West Side Market, one of the country’s first indoor markets) is Cleveland’s unofficial brewery district, with award-winning Great

With more fashion designers, more fashion industry jobs, and more independent couture boutiques than any U.S. city outside of New York or Los Angeles, Ohio’s capital and largest city has earned the honor of brewing up creativity around every corner. Add a smart and open creative community that’s packed with movers, shakers, and makers of all sorts, and it's easy to see why Columbus was just ranked by InStyle magazine among its top 10 destinations for 2017. Quite simply, some of the nation’s most creative eating, drinking, arts, culture, and shopping await visitors. With miles of galleries, shops, clubs, and restaurants, the Short North neighborhood’s hip and edgy vibe is a first stop for many travelers of all styles. Treasure-filled thrift shops sit elbow-to-elbow with the most chic boutiques, packing walkable High Street with local couture and 22

culture. Rowe Boutique, Lady Bird, Happy Go Lucky, and others offer creative style at unexpectedly reasonable prices. Tucked away on the second floor of the Hilton Columbus Downtown, Gallerie Bar & Bistro in Short North boasts one of the city’s best chefs in Bill Glover, who has hosted James Beard Foundation dinners and was invited to cook at the James Beard House in New York City. His passion for communing with local producers to glean the best local ingredients shows. Even the steaks and burgers are sourced from his farmer friend just down the road. Elegant surroundings and a finely tuned creative menu earn The Guild House a perennial spot on ten best restaurants lists for Columbus and beyond. Basi Italia, snugged into a tiny house in Victorian Village, offers a spectacular menu in the most warm and intimate surroundings. Basi’s parmesan shortbread alone

veggies of Brassica’s locavore Mediterranean fare is a feast for the eyes – and the palate. Just south of downtown, graceful, old world German Village draws visitors from around the globe with its delightful places to dine, shop, and live like a local. Stunning renovations to a historic home and beautifully appointed formal gardens make German Village Guesthouse a neighborhood worth visiting. Its renowned Spanish restaurant Barcelona, relaxed hyper-local Skillet, or trendy Harvest Pizza offer ultratasteful dining. Harvest’s über-cool neighbor, Curio cocktail bar, is the place for expertly crafted culinary cocktails where even the ice is memorable. The Columbus sprits scene is earning high marks internationally as well, with Watershed Distillery and Middle West Spirits both producing award-winning spirits and offering tours and tastings to travelers. Both are also opening new restaurants led by rock star chefs that boast expectedly amazing cocktail programs. Brothers Drake Meadery, serving up killer cocktails and equally buzzy live music, sits next door to Middle West. Beyond craft spirits, the city’s local beer scene has also enjoyed a meteoric rise. More than two

dozen craft breweries have opened in the past few years, giving birth to the “CBus Ale Trail” that nets visitors a logo pint glass for visiting four. Tackle all 28 and you get a deck of Ale Trail playing cards. For visitors who prefer a buzz of the caffeinated variety, the “Columbus Coffee Trail” delivers. Katalina’s is another classic Columbus destination for coffee, breakfast, and lunch, offering legendary huevos rancheros and a very popular spicy pork egg sandwich. But it’s the pancake balls at Katalina’s that have earned her the most fame. Golden globes with a perfect crusty exterior and a fluffy corny interior are filled with dolce de leche, Nutella, or fruit butters. But men and women do not live by bread (or booze or other brews) alone. There’s also art and Columbus boasts one of the most impressive arts scenes in the country. A new $38-million expansion to the Columbus Museum of Art sends a stunning cubist addition right over busy Broad Street, offering gorgeous art-filled architectural views from inside and out. The Pizzuti Collection, the mindblowingly broad art personal collection of Ann and Ron Pizzuti, is now open to the public, offering rotating shows and meet-the-artist

events. Wexner Center for the Arts is yet another major institution that’s renowned in the world’s top art circles, offering contemporary art exhibitions and performances that move the art world. Plus, monthly Gallery Hops in the Short North Arts District offer late-night opportunities to peruse and buy. Just west of downtown, Franklinton is emerging as the city’s next arts neighborhood, with the world’s largest creator space in the Columbus Idea Foundry. Across the street, 400 W. Rich is an artist’s enclave with dozens of studios, aerial artists offering trapeze classes and even weekly walkin ukulele classes that welcome visitors with instruments for borrowing. Thus, from food to drink to art, Columbus is a stylish Ohio destination. And it’s right on the road from Cleveland to Cincy.

Waterfront with Roebling Bridge

There’s lots that’s hot and brewing in greater Cincy as well, including down in Northern Kentucky’s Covington and Newport areas just across the busy Ohio River. From numerous distinctive neighborhoods to the rebirth of the Queen City’s beer brewing legacy, Cincy is easier than ever to enjoy. That ease of exploration starts with the new Cincinnati Bell Connector streetcar system that debuted last fall. It links popular waterfront attractions with northern downtown’s neighborhoods. The 3.6-mile loop route includes stops at 18-plus attractions, museums, entertainment districts, parks, and more. Plus, it just costs a buck to ride! and offerings. With more than $600 million in investment, the area includes a new 40-acre Riverfront park, lots of restaurants and shops, and the renowned National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine historic district is one of the largest intact urban historic districts in the nation. “OTR” features Italianate architecture, brightly-painted buildings and murals (part of the ArtWorks Murals program), an emerging brewery scene, independent restaurants, and a great tour called the Queen City Underground Tour. This unique offering tours aboveground OTR, which once featured 125-plus breweries, beer gardens, and theaters, before descending below the surface to experience recently discovered tunnels that were once vital to Cincinnati’s brewing heritage.

Back above ground, the East Walnut Hills neighborhood is also becoming more popular with visitors, thanks to Myrtle’s Punch House (the brainchild of mixologist Molly Wellmann), Woodburn Brewery, and the perfectly-named O-Pie-O, with handcrafted pizza pies using the best local seasonal ingredients. On Friday evenings, “Walk on Woodburn” sees East Walnut Hills businesses staying open late. Over in Northern Kentucky, the new Hotel Covington has turned into a tourist attraction even for those not spending the night. Built in 1907 as Coppin’s department store, it became Covington’s onetime City Hall before being turned into a world-class boutique hotel last fall. It’s filled with history and unique elements from the public spaces to the rooms – each of which has a faux fur from Covington’s own Donna Salyers’ Fabulous Furs (which make a great Cincy souvenir). Covington’s MainStrasse Village neighborhood is also worth a trip across the Ohio. Listed on the National Historic Register, MainStrasse Village’s German

influences date back to its founding in the mid-1800s by new German immigrants. Along with iconic picture opps at the Goose Girl Fountain and Carroll Chimes Glockenspiel Tower and classic German fare at longtime restaurants, new options like Otto’s (creative American cuisine), Frida 602 (authentic Mexican food, tequila, and mescal inspired by the life of Frida Kahlo), and Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar (another spirited option from aforementioned mixologist, Molly Wellmann). The Cincinnati brewing scene has deep roots and the city was once home to three dozen breweries that produced more than 30 million gallons of beer. In addition, miles of underground lagering cellars and tunnels were created below city streets to cool and store beer. Today, brewing in Cincy is making a big comeback, with craft breweries situated in new digs and in original brewery buildings. Best bets for Cincinnati brews now include: Rhinegeist Brewery; MadTree Brewery; Taft’s Ale House (situated in Cincinnati’s oldest Protestant church); and

Christian Moerlein Taproom and Lager House (Christian Moerlein is one of the city’s oldest breweries). Of course, a Queen City visit wouldn’t be complete without a taste of Cincinnati’s famed chili. With more than 140 chili parlors from which to choose (many family-run), top picks have to include Skyline, Gold Star and Camp Washington Chili. Traditionally served with Cincinnati chili sauce over spaghetti noodles and topped with shredded cheese (possibly plus onion, beans, and maybe even a “Coney” version with a hot dog on a bun), it’s a great way to top off a Cincinnati visit. Given all that’s brewing in Ohio’s three main cities, there’s lots to see and do in just 250 miles of the Buckeye State. Make plans to stay at Thousand Trails Kenisee Lake or Wilmington Campgrounds during your visit!

OHIO COFFEE CULTURE

I

t might be the cold winters, but there’s something brewing in Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati year-round. That’s thanks to distinct coffee cultures that really has all three cities brewing up a storm. In Cleveland, independent coffee shops rule the roost (and roast) with locals and visitors alike. In fact, six local coffee shops – Passengers Café, Phoenix Coffee (Ohio City and downtown Cleveland hotspots), Rising Star Roasters (also in Ohio City and downtown), Duck-Rabbit Coffee, Pour Cleveland, and Rooted in Cleveland – now offer a “Disloyalty Card” which allows customers to buy five drinks at any of the locations and receive a sixth drink for free. Visitors who need a bagel with their coffee may also want to check out the new production and retail facility for Cleveland Bagel Co. in Ohio City, with Cleveland-style bagels,

schmears, and – of course – coffee (bagel sandwiches are also on the horizon). Down in Columbus, the “Columbus Coffee Trail” features more than a dozen participating indie java shops, many of which roast their own beans on site. Buy a drink at four or more and coffeeholics and locals and visitors earn a coveted Columbus Coffee Trail T-shirt. One local favorite, Fox in the Snow Café, also serves up some of the city’s best baked goods. Custard-filled donuts, levitating biscuits, and a focaccia breakfast sandwich with a shirred egg, caramelized bacon, swiss and arugula – topped with Dijon mustard cream – have fans lining up on weekend mornings, coffee cups in hand. The Cincinnati area’s coffee culture is also creating lots of caffeine-driven buzz. Dozens of independent coffee shops with unique stories connecting coffee

with many other things dot Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky neighborhoods, including: Carabello Coffee (“Coffee & Compassion in Tandem”), Reality Tuesday Coffee (featuring specially roasted coffees from Cincy’s Seven Hills Coffee Roasters); Coffee Emporium (three area locations, including the oldest coffee house operating in Cincinnati); Deeper Roots Coffee (ethical sourcing and community improvement at the roots level); Crossroads Atrium (free coffee with a Nicaragua story at one of the area’s fastest growing church campuses); Kid Coffee and Wine Bar; Redtree Art Gallery and Coffee Shop; and, across the river in Kentucky, Florence’s Velocity Bike and Bean (a full-service bike shop with serious brews) and Covington’s Left Bank Coffeehouse (on the “left bank” of the Ohio and Licking rivers) and Roebling Point Books and Coffee.

Traveling and Camping with Companion Animals

Jenn, Thank you for your helpful instruction and tips. My partner and I look forward to reading your pet friendly section and the entire TrailBlazer Magazine. I have a Pekingese mix that regularly pops up with hotspots and strange irritations. I try to keep those areas clean as suggested but the Betadine side seems to be very irritating when used regularly. Do you have a suggestion of something else I might try to use that cleans the skin? Thank you for encouraging us to go RAW – the diet has significantly changed the quality of our dogs life as well as her hair coat and interest in food overall, while still keeping organic/healthy veggies meats a priority. Sahara looks and acts like a younger version of her beautiful self once again! Sincerely, Paula and Misty JENN Thank you for your support and kind words of The Trailblazer Magazine! We all work hard to keep helpful and insight information coming your way. The most gentle and effective product that I suggest for wound and skin care is called Vetericyn Plus. It is an odorless water based spray that can be applied to a Telfa or gauze pad, even a Q-tip for delicate cleaning around the eyes and inside the ears. My pets, as well as my own skin, is very sensitive to odors, perfumes and harsh chemicals. Vetericyn Plus is safe to use on all animal skin types and is non-sensitizing, non-irritating and safe if ingested. I also love that this product is non- staining to white fur and made in the USA. No rinsing is necessary with this topical and the abrasion can

be left open to the air or covered. I hope you have ruled out any systemic conditions with your Sahara and that her irritations are just allergy based to the environment. Another Tip is to remind our readers to eliminate perfumes, fragrances and dyes from their laundry detergent, as well as their fabric softeners. Our pets are extremely sensitive to smell and keeping things perfume free will ward off allergies, skin sensitivities and weepy eyes. Hi Jen! I know that you have extensively traveled throughout Utah and Colorado. I am a devout Thousand Trails member but I know that the system does not extend much into these two states. We are looking to branch out a little bit in the fall when the weather begins to cool off for a 4 to 6 week adventure before returning back to the Cottonwood TT preserve. Can you suggest any favorite camping locations/or hikes that the dogs can do when in UT/CO boarder area, specifically that are a must do? We are active and love adventure! Thank you so much for your pet focused advice, Tanya and Howard JENN Hello, Lotz Family! You know it! I adore Utah/CO and have spent a significant amount of time with my dogs exploring the red rocks and surrounding mountains of this diverse state. Here’s my MUST see list around those areas; Kodachrome basin state Park, UT – Beautiful hiking, biking and bird watching with in the park. You were in the middle of nowhere here so be sure you have your food supplies with you. Petrified forest state park – Branch off from there and hike the 7 mile out and back Petroglyphs/waterfall gem called Calf Creek Falls. Pack a lunch and hike early to avoid the heat.

Moab, UT – try to stay at the first come first serve goose Island campground. Across the street from there is our favorite hike to do with the dogs called the Negro Bill Trailhead. This exquisite hike has many water crossings to help keep the dog’s cool and dead ends at a massive natural Bridge. 70 miles from Moab is the little Colorado town of Fruita/Grand Junction – Try to get a reservation at Highline Lake State Park or at the James M Robb (Fruita Section) State Park. This entire area is jam-packed full of amazing hiking, cycling and birding. Don’t miss the Kokapelli Trails and the 18 Road Trails! The nearby town of Paradise, Colorado is well known for its peach festivals so check out the current list of events while trip planning. Steamboat Lake State Park and Pearl Lake – Just north of the lovely town of Steamboat Springs is breathtakingly beautiful in the late spring and blooming with colorful wildflowers and endless miles of BLM trails. I am cautious in these areas to watch for ticks and rattlesnakes – make a plan to avoid them and how to respond in you have a close encounter. Grandby, CO is at the west gate of Rocky Mtn. National Park and offers several National Forest Campground (NFC) that are more pet friendly than camping inside the NP itself. Breckenridge/Frisco/Leadville, CO – My favorite must do Colorado destinations and each of the CO State Parks and NFC’s are filled with helpful planed trails and clean, camper/pet friendly amenities. Be sure to hike the trail around Twin Lakes and Turquoise Lake in Leadville and stay at the Sugarloafin’ Campground- tell owner, Don Sepi, Jenn sent ya! All good dogs and cats are very welcomed! Enjoy and let me know if I can ever help you again with trip planning to or from the Thousand Trails Verde Valley Campground in Cottonwood. MARCH 2017 TRAILBLAZER

On The Road

Jeannie Seely by Lynn & Cele Seldon

Whether you spend life on the road for pleasure or work, it's nice to have the comforts of home as you travel the highways and byways. TRAILBLAZER checks in with folks who spend a fair amount of time on the road to see just what makes their home away from home. This month, we chatted with “Miss Country Soul,” Jeannie Seely As a female pioneer in the country music scene in the early-1960s, Jeannie Seely and her many groundbreaking accolades have often led her to be considered the godmother of country music. From her singing on a local radio station in her home state of Pennsylvania at the age of 11, to performing on television at 16, to writing and recording her own song at 23, and to having other country music luminaries – including Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Ernest Tubb, Little Jimmy Dickens and so many more – record songs she has written, Seely has lived a charmed life.

and her husband rocking their Honda Supercross jerseys Photo courtesy of Joey Amato

Early in her career, Jeannie’s deeply moving vocals earned her the nickname of “Miss Country Soul.” She joined forces with fellow Opry member Jack Greene to record a series of successful duets and launch one of the most popular road shows in country music history. She achieved No. 1 songs as a solo artist, duet partner, and BMI-Award winning songwriter. She’s also served as a radio disc jockey on her own Armed Forces Network Show, traveled and performed abroad on military tours, published her own book of witticisms, and acted in several movies including Honeysuckle Rose and Changing Hearts.

She’s still doing so today as she continues to write, record, and perform 50 years later. With her most recent album, Written in Song, released earlier this year, the 50th anniversary of her induction into the Grand Ole Opry, and several live shows per month (her motto is “Never get too busy making a living that you forget to make a life”), Seely is keeping busy. That includes keeping up with her great-nephew, professional Supercross motorcycle racer, Cole Seely. Between her tour dates and his races, she and her husband, Gene Ward, often find time to extend their travels in their 25-foot 2014 Thor Motor Coach Axis RV.

Throw in the additional factoids that she was inducted to the world famous Grand Ole Opry in 1967, became only the third female to receive a Grammy Award in country music (1966 Best Country Vocal Performance by a Female for “Don’t Touch Me”), and was the first woman to wear a miniskirt on the Opry stage, and you could say that Seely singlehandedly changed the image of female country performers.

You have quite the career in country music. Which event meant more to you: being inducted into the Grand Ole Opry or being the third woman to receive a Grammy Award in country music?

Most importantly, Seely opened the door for women to host the Grand Ole Opry. 30

MARCH 2017 TRAILBLAZER

Oh my goodness. Don’t make me choose between the two because I’m so proud of them both. I guess, in the end, the Grammy award because it’s voted on by your peers and it is based on your

performance. Which is why it’s such a high honor and it means the world to me. But, membership to the Grand Ole Opry was something I was even afraid to dream of. Being a part of the Grand Ole Opry family and it being a second home means more to me than I can even describe.

You’ve accomplished so many things in your career. Singing, songwriting, acting, disc jockey, author. Which is home to you? I would have to say performing. I love to perform because I like that instant gratification. There is just nothing like opening the Grand Ole Opry with a real up tempo song. I love being the opening act when I get to welcome everybody and get things kicked off with a fun song that gets everyone involved right away. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing that audience of almost 5,000 people getting in the mood to party. Whether you came through the front door or you are an artist coming in the back door, we all came for one thing and that is to have a great time.

You are as much a songwriter as a singer. Which country music artist were you most thrilled about that recorded one of your songs? There again, that’s like asking me to choose a favorite child. Ernest Tubbs and Jimmy Dickens were my childhood heroes. To be able to work with them and become friends meant so much. So when they recorded one of my songs, it was a tremendous honor. I’m also so proud of the very first song that I ever wrote and recorded was later recorded by Erma Thomas, who was a legend in the R&B field. She recorded that song and it was a top five R&B hit and top 15 Top 40 hit. It was kind of ironic that my first record wouldn’t be country.

Who are some of your favorites in today’s country music scene? I have so much respect for Carrie Underwood. She has taken country music to whole different levels. She really has so much respect for traditional country music and takes her membership in the Grand Ole Opry very seriously. I love Miranda Lambert’s spunk. She’s an incredible writer and performer and [is] not afraid to step out of the female [role] and not be afraid to say what some of us might be thinking. There are much younger ones coming on the scene that I like like Maggie Rose and Charlie Worsham. He is just such a great guy as well as an entertainer. His roots go deep into traditional country & bluegrass, but he manages to make his music mainstream.

Tell us about your first RV experience. I grew up in the country in rural Pennsylvania. We didn’t have an RV as kid. It was all we could do to keep a car running. But when Jack Green and I had our show together from 1969-1981, we traveled all of the time in a Silver Eagle with our five-piece band and the bus driver. We bought a new Silver Eagle in the early-70s. When we split up and went back to our individual careers, I bought the bus from Jack and continued traveling in it until the early-80s. But it was too much responsibility and I eventually sold the bus. When Gene and I got married (six years ago this past fall), he had a 40-foot diesel, so we traveled in that. Then, we decided to downsize to the 25-foot motorhome because of the maneuverability.

What are your three favorite things onboard? Number one is my coffeepot. It also has the one slide-out and it’s so easy to push a button and slide it out. I love the push button canopy for when you want to sit outside. Everything is just so easy with this little coach.

What are a few favorite destinations? North Carolina is one of our favorite places to go. We like Emerald Isle, Murfreesboro, Boone, Asheville. And, of course, we go to Gatlinburg a lot.

What’s your favorite meal to enjoy onboard or on the road? I don’t cook an awful lot. I might fix something light and easy. I do more breakfast. I personally think I’m supposed to be taken out to dinner [laughing]. I like to do scrambled eggs and I simplify things. One of our favorite things is the fully-cooked Jimmy Dean turkey sausage links. They’re easy in the microwave while I’m scrambling eggs with low-fat cheese. The one indulgence we do is the toaster waffles with real maple syrup. It has to be real maple syrup.

What’s next for you? My new album came out earlier this year. I went in and recorded 14 songs that I have written, going all the way back to that first one (that Erma recorded) and the ones that Ernest Tubbs and Jimmy Dickens recorded. Most of the songs I wrote were recorded by others. There are a few that haven’t been recorded, yet. It’s called Written in Song. In the liner notes I say they are some of the stories of my life written in song. I go on to say that not all of these stories were my mistakes [laughter]. It’s a great way to kick-off the 50th anniversary of my becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry. It doesn’t seem possible that it’s been 50 years. It’s been an incredible ride.

"i love being [the grand ole opry] opening act when i get to welcome everybody..." - Jeannie Seely MARCH 2017 TRAILBLAZER

Food and travel go hand-in-hand today, as many travelers base their destinations on celebrity chef restaurants, cooking schools, farmers markets, food and beverage events, and more. And, with food and wine festivals in nearly every nook and cranny of the country these days, it’s easy to celebrate delicious foods and top drops while rubbing elbows with culinary legends and rock stars. Every year, there are hundreds of food- and beverage-focused festivals nationwide. From small town community efforts to regional ingredient-inspired celebrations (from apple to zucchini and everything in between) and huge decadeslong “foodie” celebrations in major destinations like Aspen, South Beach, Charleston, New York, and elsewhere, food and beverage festivals are bigger, better, and tastier than ever. Most food and beverage festivals tend to have some many common ingredients. These include: grand tastings featuring dozens of local and celebrity chefs, vintners, brewers, and mixologists serving up food and beverage samples; cooking demonstrations and hands-on classes; beverage seminars and tastings; specialty dinners with

guest chefs and winemakers; spirited cooking competitions and challenges (think “Chopped”); wine auctions; book signings; and retail hubs. Many festivals also take pride in serving up a menu of celebrity chefs that range from Top Chef stars like Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons to Food Network veterans, including Mario Batali, Rachel Ray, and Emeril Lagasse, culinary legends such as Wolfgang Puck and Daniel Bolud, as well as rock star chefs from their own community (think Mike Lata and Sean Brock from Charleston or Bobby Flay from New York City). And, from there, each festival brands their own individual flavor, with varied music events, field trips to the farms, oyster roasts, golf outings, and more. And while the South seems particularly welcoming when it comes to a plethora of food festivals (some say they’re as popular as a cast iron skillet full of corn bread), Texas, California, Arizona, and the Pacific Northwest are also offering up a cornucopia of tasty options. Here are 24 of America’s top food and beverage festivals in the lower 48 – arranged chronologically so that you can travel along all year!

Who’s in the kitchen with

TrailBlazer?

I think the most exciting thing about March is St. Patrick’s Day. To brighten what I like to call the ‘month of mud’ I wanted to take a green and Irish spin on the recipes I’m sharing, to help keep your palate excited through the transition from winter to spring! Green vegetables are one of the richest foods in terms of nutrients in the vegetable world. They are an amazing agent for our bodies proper function and help aid in detoxification. I always suggest incorporating them into at least one meal per day and switching them up frequently in order to receive the various and unique benefits from them all! ASK

RVBILL

YOUR TECH QUESTIONS ANSWERED!

Serpentine Belt

Q

Bill, The last time I had my motorhome in for service my mechanic suggested I replace the serpentine belt as well as the others. I have a little over 58,000 miles in and the motorhome is six years old. Do you have any input on this matter? You see my Apple computer-oriented brain is not up to the necessary tasks and services that my RV deserves and I so appreciate learning from you and the readers in this monthly column. We hope our paths cross one of these summers and I can share a campfire and a bottle of wine with you and your wife. Thanks, Rich

Shower Crack

Q

Bill, The shower pan in my ‘06 Montana fifth wheel has cracked right around the drain in a perfect circle. My local RV dealer says I might be able to order a new shower pan but it’s quite labor expensive. Is there any way at all that I can patch this plastic shower pan with some kind of Epoxy or glue? Can we use the same process on our plastic sink in the bathroom as well. It has a crack about an inch and a half long. Thank you, Tom

MARCH 2017 TRAILBLAZER

A

Rich, A campfire and wine with fellow RVing friends is always welcome! Thanks for the kind words. Durango, CO, is one of our most favorite locations to visit in Colorado. It is good that you are looking into this service for your RV before you go on a long trip again. If you consult the motorhome owner’s manual, it will give you the basic maintenance schedules to follow. Maybe set up an Excel file and reminder list for yourself to reference back to every few months and then when we get together, you can teach me how to do that lay out on my Apple! My recommendation is every 5 to 6 years and 50 to 60,000 miles for the serpentine belt. It is certainly more

A

Tom, Devcon makes a bathtub repair kit that comes in white. Essentially it’s a fiberglass repair kit designed for use in plastic tubs as well as your sink. Make sure that you drill a hole on either end of the crack to prevent it from creeping out from under the repair kit. If I’ve said it once and I’ll say it a thousand times: “As always, preparation is the key to success!” Before you do the final installation after the careful preparation, wipe all surfaces with alcohol and a clean rag. As far as the bathroom sink inquiry-

convenient to change the belts in your hometown rather than finding a place on the road that can hopefully accommodate you. Remember to note the maintenance schedule for your hoses and tires as well. Radiator hoses rot from the inside out making it almost impossible to detect when the hose is going to go. Be sure to keep records of when the maintenance is done so that you can refer back to them if you have any questions or, like me, simply forget when a service was completed from years ago. Thanks for the reminder to go check my own maintenance schedules right now!

you may be able to remove the sink and install the patch on the back of it for aesthetic purposes. The patch kits do use a two-part epoxy that will start to heat up, so be aware that you don’t have an unlimited amount of time to do the patch, as it will start to set up. If you take your time and get the patch kit straight and level, it will look very nice.

Dehumidifier

Q

Hey Bill, It was great seeing you at the La Conner Preserve in Washington. I had a question about the humidity inside our RV. It seems as though when we wake up in the morning on these cold winter nights the windows are saturated and some of the walls in the bedroom are dripping moisture. We’ve tried wiping them down but I’m afraid we’re not doing enough. Can you give me any hints on this matter, or what do you guys do when faced with the same dilemma? Be well - Jack and Staci

Discontinued Seal

Q

Hey Bill, I am having a really difficult time trying to find slide out seals for my 2009 Alpha fifth wheel. As you know, Alpha is out of business and my local RV dealer is saying that the necessary seals are no longer available. I really need to replace them as the rain is getting in through what’s left of the rotted out seals. What do you think about me doing the installation to save on the cost of labor? It looks like it might be a little bit of a job but I think that I can peck away at it for the good. Thanks for your help, Rodger

A

There’s no question that condensation can be difficult to battle in cold weather when you’re not able to open up your RV and air it out. Single pane windows produce two or three times as much condensation as dual pane windows. While there are several products on the market, the option that I prefer is a dehumidifier. You will find many different makes and models from small to large, so look around and find one that fits in the location you plan to place it. It’s easy to plug it in and let it do its job and empty the water collection bowl periodically. Another product that

A

Roger, I understand that when a manufacturer goes out of business it can really create a problem when trying to find aftermarket parts. But be encouraged! There is a company called Clean Seal Inc,. that specializes in the gaskets and seals that you are in need of. They do have large selection of seals and I believe that they will have one to fit your Alpha. Go on their website, www.cleanseal.com, and carefully compare their seals to the specification of your old seals. I believe that Clean Seal Inc. will send you a sample if requested, and this will ensure

works well is called Dri-Z-Air. It uses a desiccant that attracts moisture quite well. The only drawback is you will need to keep several bags of the desiccant with you and empty the bowl periodically before it overflowskudos for being mindful of this common RV problem and searching out a solution.

GOT A QUESTION FOR BILL? SEND AN EMAIL TO AskRVBill@equitylifestyle.com

that you were on the right track with your selection. As far as the installation, I have no doubt that you could probably do the installation. Once again, “As always, preparation is the key to success!” One of their new seals for slide outs is called the Flip-NSeal designed to replace a vast majority of slide out wiper seals. Be sure to reach out again if you have any other questions and good luck!
