Founded by the American Hiking Society, National Trails Day® commemorates the many hiking trails we have in this country. RVing is a great adventure and there’s always something new to learn!

Wow! Springtime Travel Season is in full swing! Let’s take a look at a few simple reminders that can make cleaning your RV cooktop, towing a toad, and traveling through mountainous terrain just a little bit easier. Ready? Set. Let’s go!

Tow, Tow, Tow Your Toad:

Lots of motorhomers carry a vehicle in tow (a “toad”) for the great convenience of having a handy runabout readily available for sightseeing and trips to the store. But that mobility comes at a price – you have to learn to care for that extra passenger! Keep an eye on the little toad whenever you're pulling it down the highway, and remember that a low or flat tire on the toad won’t always be noticeable from the motorhome's driver's seat while underway. Make a habit of stopping every two to three hours to stretch your legs and check up on the condition of your little tagalong. Each time you take a break, perform a simple tire check. Walk around the vehicle and inspect it carefully, checking to be sure that the tow bar's pins are in place and that the cables are secure. And don't even THINK about trying to back up when the toad is hooked to the motorhome, not even for a very short distance. You can damage the tow bar, not to mention your toad – and a bent bar will render your towbar useless. If you have no choice but to back up, take the time to unhook the toad. Back both vehicles out separately, then re-hook the toad to the motorhome.

Highway Hip-Hop:

Occasionally, RVers get so caught up in the joys of travel that we may forget that the additional weight and size of an RV makes it less maneuverable than a typical

car. It’s important to be intimately familiar with your rig’s specific handling characteristics and to remember to make lane changes slowly and deliberately. Since RVs are significantly heavier than typical passenger vehicles, they obviously require greater braking and following distances. Stopping distances for RV’s are much greater than for their four-wheeler cousins, so you must always allow more time and distance for the vehicle to slow or come to a complete stop. If you’re driving a large motorhome or towing a trailer or fifth wheel, be on the lookout for a phenomenon called “brake fade.” Brake fade occurs when brakes become overheated from prolonged continuous use, like on long downgrades in the Rocky Mountains. Brake fade can even occur simply because the brakes are out of alignment. Although the brake pedal may still feel firm and respond normally, little or no reduction in the vehicle's speed occurs. This can be an uncomfortable situation, especially when traveling in mountainous areas. To help avoid brake fade on downgrades, “pump” your brakes on long downgrades (gently applying, then releasing the brakes intermittently), use the lower gears to allow the engine to help slow the vehicle, and if your rig is equipped with a Pac Brake or Jake Brake, be sure to use it!

Cooktop Cleaning Tips:

You can keep your stovetop/ cooktop looking and performing its best for years of happy camping just by cleaning it after every use. As soon as you’ve finished cooking and the cooktop is completely cool, take a minute or two to wipe up any grease spatters or food spills with a damp, soapy cloth. Wipe the burner caps or elements, and clean

the temperature control knobs, removing them if necessary. Just use a mild detergent or a mild degreaser, if needed – we do NOT recommend using oven cleaners, steel wool, or abrasive cleaners (like Comet) on any RV stovetop. You can unintentionally damage and dull the stovetop’s surface with strong or abrasive chemicals. If you have stubborn, baked-on stains, use a synthetic scrub pad (like ScotchBrite). Just allowing a damp, soapy sponge to sit on a stained area for about 10-15 minutes before cleaning will make it much easier to scrub away cookedon stains with a ScotchBrite pad. A great old-timer’s cleaning tip is a surprising one: toothpaste! Yes, good old-fashioned white toothpaste can be used to gently scrub off the last bit of burned-on stains. Baking soda also works without scratching the surface. If you find your cooktop’s burners are beginning to clog, you can gently clean the orifices with a simple straight pin (working carefully and only when the burner’s off and cool, of course). If your RV’s cooktop is equipped with a countertop cover, always allow the cooktop to cool completely before putting the cover back in place. Remember to periodically clean the filter screen on the overhead fan above your cooktop, just like you would at home. Gently remove the metal filter from its notched nook, then soak it in soapy hot water. Then just “swish” the filter in the soapy water as it soaks, brushing gently, if needed, and then rinse thoroughly with very warm water. Dry it thoroughly before re-installing and you’re done! Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the US to commemorate Mexico's victory over the French army in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Every May 5, cities and towns all over the US celebrate Mexican culture with fiestas, food, and mariachi music. week with tournaments, outdoor movie night, an afternoon pool party and much more to kick off the summer season. Day 2: A Step Back in Time Historic Cold Spring Village: Return to life as it was during the “age of homespun” (1789-1840) while strolling the 30 acres that include gardens, a farm with heritage crops, and 26 restored historic buildings. There is also an ice cream parlor, bakery and the Cold Spring Grange restaurant. This is a familyfriendly, interactive experience that transports you to a simpler time. Emlen Physick Estate: Visit this historic 18-room mansion to get a glimpse of the architecture, decorative arts and customs of the Victorian Era. Built in 1879, it is considered to be one of the finest examples of “Stick Style” architecture in America. Many of the original furnishings are on display. For more historic architecture, consider the combined Trolley/Physick Estate Tour which includes a guided tour of Cape May’s historic district as well as the Physick Estate.

Day 3: The City of Brotherly Love It’s hard to imagine that in just about an hour, you can leave your sandy surroundings of the shore and be in an urban environment like Philadelphia and experience history, culture and of course, philly cheese steaks. Lucy the Elephant: Designated as a National Historic Landmark, Lucy the Elephant is a six-story “novelty architecture” elephant built in 1881. Originally serving as a real estate office, through the years, Lucy has also served as a summer home as well as a tavern. Located in Margate, visitors can tour the inside of Lucy via a spiral staircase in her left leg. From atop the “howdah” on Lucy’s back, you can view the Atlantic Ocean as well as the skyline of Atlantic City.

Skidaway Island

Amid the urban setting of Orlando and nearby Thousand Trails’ Orlando, you’ll find this 8.43 mile stretch of nature among cypress and gum trees running along the creek. Keep your eyes peeled for river otters, turtles, egrets and Great Blue Herons.

Less than an hour’s drive south from Thousand Trails’ The Oaks at South Point, you will find Skidaway Island State Park in Georgia which offers a 4.6 mile loop trail with great opportunities to see mosscovered trees, birds and other wildlife, including plenty of fiddler crabs.

Alabama:

Horse Creek Trail

A 3.2 mile trail (one mile is unpaved nature trail) through the rolling countryside. A peaceful bike ride option if you’re staying at Thousand Trails’ Hidden Cove. Virginia:

Powhatan Creek Trail

Covering 2.5 miles, this trail crosses wooden bridges and runs along the Powhatan Creek. A multi-use trail, it is adjacent to the Virginia Capital Trail with beautiful views of the Virginia countryside. Parking is available at the Jamestown Settlement which is less than 20 minutes from Thousand Trails' Williamsburg.

Lost Creek Reservoir State Trailway

This nine mile route along the shoreline of Lost Creek is mostly flat with a few hills. The trail leads to Fort Richardson State Park, a US Army installation active during the late 1800s, which features several of the original buildings restored including the hospital, officers’ quarters and a bakery. Fort Richardson is less than 30 minutes from Thousand Trails’ Bay Landing campground.

A 2.7 mile ride through pine and hardwood forest, you’ll share the path with joggers and skaters too. The path is part of Shelby Farms Park set on 4500 acres of greenspace. It’s a Memphis gem and is about an hour from Thousand Trails’ Cherokee Landing.

Cape Cod Rail Trail

The Cape Cod Rail Trail is a paved 22-mile route that runs from South Dennis to Wellfleet. Riders can expect to glimpse ocean views, cranberry bogs, dunes and marshes. It starts at the South Dennis trailhead parking area which is less than five minutes from Encore’s Old Chatham Road campground and under an hour’s drive from Thousand Trails’ Gateway to Cape Cod campground. Lincoln Woods Trail/White Mountain National Forest

This 2.9 mile trail is ideal for family rides as it is a wide and fairly flat old dirt logging road. Scenic Franconia Falls is just off the trail which follows the Pemigewasset River. Entrance to the trail starts at the Lincoln Woods parking lot off the Kancamagus Highway which is a little more than an hour’s drive from all three Encore New Hampshire RV resorts; Pine Acres, Tuxburry Pond, and Sandy Beach. 26

Pumkinvine Nature Trail

Ride along the 17 miles of this asphalt/crushed stone trail and learn the history of the area’s railroad. The trail runs from Goshen through Middlebury and winds up in Shipshewana, which is less than 15 minutes from Encore’s Twin Mills campground. Kentucky:

Big Hollow Trail/Mammoth Cave National Park

Experience the above-ground wonders of Mammoth Cave National Park on this wide, 8-mile long trail featuring stream crossings and rock outcroppings. Make camp at Thousand Trails’ Diamond Caverns.

This month, TrailBlazer would like to introduce you to Dave and Linda Gribbin, fulltimers who have taken the roadtrip of a lifetime out west. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve even instilled the love of camping in their grandchildren!

TB: How long have you been camping and RVing? Who introduced you to it? Tell us how it all began! D&LG: We had never camped in our younger years. Linda's older sister was a fulltime RVer for many years and they used to come by and see us from time to time, so I guess that is how we got introduced to RVing! However, at the time, Linda used to tell her sister "I will never do that." We have been RVing for five years as of April 18. Friends of ours knew we had been talking about RVing when Dave retired,

so they introduced us to a couple they knew that had a Class A Winnebago Adventurer for sale. We went to look at it and it was what we needed and wanted, and the Lord blessed us with the right price, so we bought it. TB: How did you first hear about Thousand Trails? D&LG: After purchasing the RV, another couple in our church asked us over to their house (they had just come off of the road recently due to health issues) and they owned

a three generational Outdoor World (ODW) membership. None of their children wanted it so they offered it to us for the transfer fee, so that is how we obtained an Outdoor World membership. In 2010, we went to Texas to spend some time with our two children who lived there, so we didn't use the ODW membership (since they were only on the east coast). In 2011, we took a trip up the east coast so that we could use our ODW membership and while traveling and staying at the campgrounds, which were very impressive. We started hearing about Thousand Trails. So, while we were staying at ODW Circle M in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, we saw that they were going to have a seminar about the Thousand Trails memberships. We attended because we wanted to go on a west coast trip in 2012, so we joined TT and bought the Elite membership, which seemed to be the best deal for our needs.

TB: What is one of your fondest camping memories? How about one of your fondest TT memories? D&LG: When we first bought our RV we had asked the grandchildren in Texas what they wanted for Christmas and they asked for an RV road trip. So, our fondest memory was when we took our youngest daughter, her husband and the two grandchildren on a three week trip out west to see the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Red Mountains of Sedona, Phoenix, Tucson,

White Sands in Alamogordo, New Mexico, Carlsbad Caverns (to see the bats), and to see the Aliens in Roswell, New Mexico, then back to Dallas. Our fondest TT memory was when we arrived at TT Paradise in Silver Creek, Washington, and at the entrance, which is at the top of the mountain, was a spectacular view of Mount St. Helens to the south, Mount Rainer to the north and the farm land below. It was an awesome and awe-inspiring sight. TB: Any funny camping/ RVing stories? D&LG: While staying at the TT Medina Lake in Lakehills, Texas, on our first day while we were setting up our RV, we experienced deer running out of the woods from everywhere and running up the road. We later found out that the deer love the deer corn there and many other campers were feeding the deer. We quickly fell into step and purchased some deer corn and had as many as 50 deer outside our

door each morning waiting for breakfast. Our daughter and grandchildren came to camp with us (staying in one of the cabins) and while they were there they had the deer eating out of their hand. One day, we had a doe standing by the steps wanting to come in the RV to find the deer corn!

don't know about." We tow a 2007 Chevy HHR and hardly know it is back there. The HHR also carries Dave's power chair that he needs to be able to sightsee. We drive direct routes to our campgrounds and then we venture out on the back roads in the HHR for our sightseeing adventures.

TB: What type of camper are you/what equipment do you use? What do you prefer and why? (ex: fifth wheel, RV, tent, cabins, etc.)

TB: Where have you gone that you wouldn't have otherwise, if it hadn't been for your Thousand Trails membership?

D&LG: We have a 1999 Winnebago Adventurer 35C Class A Motorhome with one slide out, named the Grey Lady. She was 10 years young and without blemishes when we purchased her. This was the perfect fit for the two of us to go fulltime and travel the United States. We tend to not look at too many newer or bigger rigs because "you can't miss what you

D&LG: The West Coast states we have been to: California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Mondana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. The trip out West was made possible for us because of how the TT parks were spread out across the states, with locations close to popular cities, attractions, and National points of interest (ie: National Parks, etc).

TB: What is your favorite part about the outdoor lifestyle? D&LG: Being able to visit the many National Parks, Monuments, State Parks and Historic Sites. Dave was in the Navy so we visit the National Battlefields and Shipyards. We also love meeting new

campers and sometimes reconnecting with some along the way. We enjoy all of the beauty that God has given us to see in our United States and we pray that we can continue to enjoy seeing so much more of God's beautiful country. TB: Can you finish this sentence? I knew I was a TrailBlazer when... D&LG: Dave wanted to sell the house at first and I was skeptical (not ever camping before). After one and a half years on the road, we came home to clean up and close up the house again after having some friends stay in it for a while. While we were there (still living in the RV) I decided that I was done with the big house and so we put a "For Sale" out in the front yard (in October) and we had 8 people stop by that first day. We left for a trip to Texas and received some more calls and by the end of January we went to closing on the house. We were truly TrailBlazers then and we have been having a blast ever since.

TB: Feel free to share any other camping/RVing stories here. D&LG: Shortly after buying the RV, we were going to take two of our granddaughters on a short campout to see a night launch of the shuttle from Kennedy Space Center (mind you, we were still "green" as campers). So, we hooked up the HHR and off we went to Grant, Florida, not realizing that the HHR was still running. While on the road there, Dave had to stop quickly due to traffic and the brake buddy in the car was actuated causing the power brakes on the car to lock up and when we

arrived at the campground and unhooked the HHR to go get something to eat we found out that we had flat spots on the front drive tires. So, that was a learning experience and one of many of our "adventures," as we have come to call them. Without TT there is no way that we, as senior citizens living on a Social Security fixed income, could travel the way we do and see the many beautiful sites. We have been truly blessed by God to be able to travel like this.

EDDIE MONTGOMERY Whether you spend life on the road for pleasure or work, it’s nice to have the comforts of home as you travel the highways and byways. TRAILBLAZER checks in with folks who spend a fair amount of time on the road to see just what makes their home away from home. This month, we chatted with Montgomery Gentry’s Eddie Montgomery... by Lynn & Cele Seldon

From “My Town” and “Folks Like Us” to “Headlights” and “Hillbilly Shoes,” Montgomery Gentry has become one of the most identifiable duos in the history of country music – as much for their ‘outlaw’ (Eddie Montgomery) meets ‘gentleman’ (Troy Gentry) sensibilities as the Kentucky country music movement they’ve helped define. For more than 15 years, the duo has embraced the ever-changing environment of country music while remaining true to their signature sound – making them true trailblazers for contemporary country. “It’s a chemistry that’s worked for years,” says Troy Gentry. “We have two separate singing styles that – when they come together – they’re very identifiable. The back and forth between our vocals definitely keeps you listening and keeps you interested in the song.” Despite their success, Eddie and Troy remain close to folks like them – not just family and friends, but their family of fans. They feel a responsibility to those who have elevated their careers to the level where they have earned multiple ACM and CMA awards, sold several million albums, and been honored

by memberships in the Grand Ole Opry and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. “I think it’s what a lot of people can identify with when they see us live on stage or they’re listening to an album. They’re like, ‘They’ve actually lived this,’” says Eddie. “Some things we wish we wouldn’t have done, but sometimes we do it again,” he adds, laughing.

But the songs are about more than just factory workers who like to blow off a little steam – they dig deeper. They’re about passion – for doing a good job, for working hard, and playing harder – for being an honorable person, for loving your God, your country, your family, and your life.

On their newest album Folks Like Us, releasing June 9, 2015 (their first album in more than three years), songs like “That’s Just Living,” “Better For It,” “Two Old Friends,” and the title track all embrace a passion for life, people, travel, and more. For instance, the lyrics in the already-released “Folks Like Us” serve as an ode to life on the road: “We’re scattered out on rural routes everywhere from California to the Carolines.” When Montgomery Gentry hits the road, they do so in style, with two custom buses built to suit their unique personalities. Eddie calls Troy’s bus “The Bat Cave,” thanks to Troy’s love of all things bats and Batman, while Eddie has dubbed his own bus (a 45-foot Prevost XLII with a slideout) the “Honky Tonk on Wheels.” TRAILBLAZER recently caught up with him at the Heintz and Becker De Soto Seafood Festival in Palmetto, Florida.

What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while you were on the road that you can actually share? At one time, we had 16 people riding together on tour. We pulled stuff all the time. Your bunk was supposed to be the only sacred place onboard. If you fell asleep elsewhere, your [butt] was ours. Anything can happen. It’s unreal what you can do with a Sharpie!

What’s your favorite thing about traveling in your Honky Tonk on Wheels, versus staying in a hotel? First off, I know I ain’t gonna’ get no bugs in my bed. I’ve gotten so used to sleeping on the bus – with the movement and the engine and generator – that I have a hard time getting to sleep when I’m back home. The only thing you don’t want to hear are rumble strips!

Besides your bed, what are a few other favorite things onboard?

What kind of music do you listen to on the road?

I always carry my guitars and music equipment. As for stereos, they actually have a corner for all my blown-out speakers, ‘cause I love rockin’, man. I want to be able to turn it up! I also have a stereo and TV outside, so we can sit outside. I also go nowhere without my UK [University of Kentucky] flag.

I grew up with all kinds of stuff coming up with a honky tonk family. My mom was a drummer, my dad was a guitar player, and the bartenders were our babysitters. I love Dean Martin and the Rat Pack, but also listen to Ozzy Osborne and Merle Haggard. It really depends on what mood I’m in and how many drinks I’ve had.

Do you envy anything on Troy’s bus? I envy the neatness on Troy’s bus. Mine kind of looks more like a campground on wheels. I have colored lights, beads everywhere, and pictures of my friends hanging out. I take my campground with me.

What are a few favorite destinations and why?

What are some favorite foods on the road?

I love arenas, but these festivals – like this seafood festival – are awesome. I love to eat. I don’t care what it is, I’ll try it. I’ll get out here today and see if I can find a lobster on a stick or something. I love the festivals and hanging out [with fans] until it’s time to rock. We don’t call ‘em fans, we call ‘em friends. A lot of times, they’ll end up backstage – or on the Honky Tonk on Wheels.

Pickled eggs. Pickled baloney. Oysters. Sardines. Barbeque. Steaks. We love good food. I’ll eat anything. Then I can go home and try it on the Big Green Egg. I don’t care what it is, I’ll try to grill it.

We noticed a wine refrigerator onboard.

You and Jennifer also own a camper, right?

My wife, Jennifer, rides with me a lot. Most of the time I’m a bourbon guy. I love that Jim Beam and LA1 [Louisiana Whiskey].

We love camping! Anytime. We go and pull it out and, the next thing you know, it’s a party. And, you can’t camp without grilling out.

Williamstown Theater Festival June 30 - August 23, 2015 Williamstown, MA In 1954, Ralph Renzi and David C. Bryan set out to create a place where young actors, directors, set designers and writers could showcase their original works and reinterpret classic productions. The Williamstown Theater Festival (WTF) was established and has since received the highest theatrical honor - the Tony Award for Excellence in Theater in 2002. The festival is located just under two hours drive from the Sturbridge RV Resort (MA). WTF has transferred several successful productions to Broadway over the years, most recently Hedda Gabler, The Man Who Had All the Luck, and One Mo’ Time. WTF runs from June 30th to August 23rd, but if there’s a particular show that has piqued your interest, make sure you check the schedule – shows run only a certain number of days during the festival. Spoleto Festival May 22 - June 7 2015 Charleston, SC The Spoleto Festival takes place every year in Charleston, South Carolina and the festival spans 17 days and nights each spring, overtaking a plethora of theaters, churches, and outdoor spaces in Charleston. The Spoleto Festival is internationally recognized as the premier performing arts festival in America and it is a place for many performers to cultivate their craft. It was established by Pultizer Prizewinning composer Gian Carlo Menotti, Christopher Keene, and several others who were looking to create a counterpart for the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy and settled on the very charming Charleston to host the festival. Many of the events taking place are for classical music, plays, choral and jazz music, opera, dance, theater. Many performances are premiered at the Spoleto Festival and this year some of those include a brand new production of Romeo & Juliet from Shakespeare’s Globe theater company and the festival debut of Australian company Casus Circus.

There will even be a ballet interpretation of one of Tennessee Williams’ most beloved plays, A Streetcar Named Desire, as well as some experimental contemporary music performances for festival goers to experience.

The Spoleto Festival is located only about an hour drive from The Oaks at South Point (SC). Charleston is famous for it’s golf courses, sandy public beaches, plantations, and gardens so if you’re attending Spoleto this year, there will be no shortage of things to do in Charleston.

Big Barrel Country Music Festival June 28-28 Dover, PA Grab your cowboy and cowgirl hats and boots, y’all. The Big Barrel Country Music Festival Will take place this year in Dover, Pennsylvania and is bringing huge country music stars like Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Merle Haggard, and Lynyrd Skynyrd to this year’s inaugural festival. And if a mega line up of country music stars isn’t enough, Big Barrel also features a number of attractions like a family area and petting zoo for the lil’ ones, a dance hall where you can line

dance your little country-music loving heart out. Need a new pair of boots or maybe last year’s cowboy hat isn’t cutting it this year? Then be sure to visit the Big Barrel market where patrons can pick up almost anything from a new outfit, to cooking spices and sauces, or souvenirs like artist merchandise. Fingerlakes Musical Theater Festival May - December 2015 Fingerlakes, NY The Fingerlakes are well-known for their natural beauty and the fine Riesling wines crafted in this region of upstate New York. But there is much more to do here than just sipping wines and canoeing on the lakes - the Fingerlakes Musical Theater Festival is a popular event for musical theater junkies from all over. Every year, Broadway heads north to the Fingerlakes Musical Theater Festival which takes place from May until December. If you happen to stop over at Encore's Brennan Beach RV Resort (NY) this summer, why not catch a Broadway play without having to deal with the madness on 34th Street in New York City? Professional productions of West Side Story, Saturday Night Fever, and Sweeney Todd will run through this summer. If you can’t make it this summer and prefer to check out the Fingerlakes in the colder months, the Musical Theater Festival continues until the end of December.

Bumbershoot Festival Labor Day Weekend Festival, Seattle, WA The Bumbershoot Festival almost didn’t make it back this year due to some financial setbacks late in 2014. Though the schedule of performers won’t be announced until later this year, the festival is back on! Originally called “Festival ’71” and “Festival ’72,” the name “Bumbershoot” came about as way to “describe the Festival as an umbrella for all of the various arts and performers it encompasses,” according to the event's website. Bumbershoot takes place every year over Labor Day Weekend in Seattle’s City Center and is a place for showcasing food, comedy music and art. The lineup boasts over 100 musical and comedy acts every year, many of whom are local artists from the Pacific Northwest. Some of last year’s acts included Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Los Lobos, The replacements, and The Head and the Heart. Seattle City Center is located just a forty minute drive from Encore's Tall Chief RV Camping Resort (WA) and if you’re in the mood for a well-run, modern music and art festival, snag a ticket to Bumbershoot this summer.

Who’s in the kitchen with

TrailBlazer?

I think that BBQ and Dutch oven just meld together so wonderfully. There is the smell of burning wood and the not burning food! You can create any flavor profile you wish be it spicy, sweet, hot, smoky. Dutch ovens create a perfect vehicle to use all the BBQ flavor with all the smoking. Here's a few of my favorite recipes to use your Dutch oven when you want a little BBQ flavor. Watermelon ribs are some of my summer favorites. Take a nice watermelon, combine it with country ribs rubbed with your favorite dry rub and cook. Ah, summer! There's some health and nutrition here with the BBQ lentils. And for a quick appetizer, try the meatballs!

Watermelon Ribs

Based on a recipe from Loveless Café, Nashville, TN

Setup: • 12 in Dutch oven • 15 coals on lid, 8 coals below (in a ring) to start with Ingredients: • 2 racks of “St Louis” cut pork spareribs or 3 lbs

of pork country style ribs

• • • •

3-4 tablespoons good rub* ½ cup brown sugar 1 jar sweet and smokey type BBQ sauce 3 cups watermelon, cut into large cubes

Directions: Blend BBQ rub and brown sugar and rub ribs, making sure to cover all the surfaces evenly. Let sit and marinate for several hours (3-4 hrs). Pan sear the ribs in hot Dutch oven by putting 12 coals under the oven. Pull out ½ the ribs. Put in ½ the watermelon chunks. Put the other ½ of ribs into the oven. And then the other ½ of the watermelon chunks. Cook the ribs in the Dutch oven for 2 ½ to 3 hrs at slow temp. 300° maximum or use a loose ring of coals on the lid and a loose ring on the bottom (14-15 on top, 8 on bottom). Replenish the coals as necessary, every 45-50 minutes.

The ribs and watermelon will make plenty of liquid. The meat should be so tender that will almost melt in your mouth! You can serve with BBQ sauce, but I didn’t find that necessary. *Rub…I like a smokey, paprika, brown sugar, cayenne to make it sparky type rub. Here is a basic recipe from Steve Raichlen: • (packed) dark brown sugar • ¼ cup paprika • 3 tablespoons freshly ground black pepper • 1 tablespoon garlic powder • 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes

• ½ to 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper • ½ teaspoon celery seeds Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and stir or whisk to mix. Transfer to a jar, cover, and store away from heat and light. The rub will keep for several months.

Setup: • 12 inch Dutch oven • 25 lit charcoal briquettes. Ingredients: • 5 cups vegetable broth

(or half broth and half water)

• 12 ounces to 1 pound (about

2 to 2 ¹⁄³ cups) brown lentils

• Maple Syrup, the real thing

for sweetness

• 1 cup prepared barbecue

sauce of choice (sweet and spicy or chipotle Sweet Baby Rays) or use sauce from small can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce to taste, maple syrup to taste, and a couple of spoons of tomato paste)

• 2 (14 ½-ounce) can reduced-

• 1-2 cans kidney or other beans

• 1 cup chopped onion • 1 cups chopped orange

Optional, for Serving: • Hot pepper sauce to taste • Shredded cheddar cheese, • Sour cream

sodium diced tomatoes, Italian flavor

bell pepper

• 4 cloves fresh garlic, minced

Start to finish: 1 hour Yield: 6-8 generous servings

Directions: Bring the broth (and water) to a boil in a Dutch oven over a bed of coals. Meanwhile, pick through the lentils checking for stones or debris. Rinse and drain the lentils. When the broth boils, add the lentils and bring back to a boil. Take away some of the bottom coals, making it a ring instead to reduce heat to low. Add the tomatoes with their juice to the pot. Add the onion, chopped pepper, garlic, adobo sauce, tomato paste, maple syrup and barbecue sauce. Put the lid on. Put a ring of coals around the rim. Simmer 45 minutes, covered, stirring frequently. Add a little more water or vegetable stock if all of the moisture evaporates. Remove the pot from the heat. Let stand and most of the liquid should get absorbed. Add the hot pepper sauce to taste, if desired. Serve topped with cheese and sour cream, if desired.

Mesquite Barbecue Meatballs

Serves: About 20 Meatballs

Setup: • 10 inch Dutch oven • 20 lit charcoal briquettes Ingredients: • 2 Tablespoons dark brown

sugar or real maple syrup

• 3 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar

• ¾ teaspoon ground cumin • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves • 2 cups crushed fire-roasted

diced tomatoes (and you will have a cup left over from a 28 ounce can)

• 1.5 pounds ground beef

(85/15% lean)

• ¼ cup Italian seasoned dried breadcrumbs

• 1-2 Tablespoon Mesquite

seasoning (such as McCormick)

• Cooking spray • Fresh oregano leaves for

garnish, optional

Directions: Place sugar/syrup, vinegar, cumin, cloves and tomatoes in a blender and puree until smooth.

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, and Mesquite seasoning. Shape into 20 meatballs. Lay down a bed of coals (about 15 briquettes). Place the Dutch oven on the coals and let it heat up. Give the oven a coating of cooking spray or a light coat of vegetable oil. Add meatballs, cooking until brown on all sides, about 3 minutes. Add tomato sauce mixture and bring to a simmer. Put the lid on the oven. Pull out some of the bottom coals to reduce the heat. Q: Hi, Bill. I love your column in TrailBalzer and think it's a valuable part of the magazine. And, to prove my confidence in your expertise... I am also an RVer with a stinky issue! We have a 1999 Sandpiper that we love. We've had no troubles with the water until mid-/late last season when the egg smell showed up on the hot water side. I researched the whole anode rod thing, and now know ours has probably never been changed and was totally gone. I flushed the system completely and replaced the anode rod. I did not run any bleach or peroxide through the system. Just water.

That was a couple of weeks before the end of the season, and the stink was still there (albeit better). It's hard to tell if its still just the hot water side, or if it's just the water from the well. (Hard to tell if the cold side stinks too, but seems mostly the hot side). I didn't detect the smell when I checked the hot water in the bathhouse, which is just across the way. My Q: Is there anything else we should do to the system to improve the situation or does the anode rod need some time to "kick in"? It does seem better than before we swapped it out, but not completely. The other

thing to note is we did this right before we closed up for the season, so its fully winterized with antifreeze now. Maybe that alone will do the trick when we open back up soon this spring, but wanted your opinion so I can plan ahead. Also, what's the expected lifespan of those anode rods and how often should I swap in a new one? Thanks in advance for your "A:". If I'm lucky, I just might get published! All the best, Vicki Murphy

A: Cheers, Vickie. Thank you for the kind introduction and your note. I personally have run into your problem before and it is indeed a stinky issue. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;egg smellâ&#x20AC;? comes from the water you are using and this usually this occurs when using well water. The anode rod is not designed to remove the smell that you're getting out of the water. It is designed as a sacrificial element for corrosion, which can attack the inner tank of the water heater. The lifespan of the anode rod varies with water conditions and minerals. The anode rod should be replaced when it is down to roughly 50%. Flush your

water heaters in your tank at least once a year, and keep track of the date in which you flushed the water heater and checked the condition of the anode rod. If the anode rod is past the 50% mark, it may need to be replaced every 6 to 8 months. And if it's not to the 50% mark you may be able to get a year and a half before replacing. However I recommend flushing the inner tank every year with a device made for this purpose. This flushing tool can be purchased at any RV store or online. The sulfur smell can be very difficult to remove from the water heaters tank as well as the

hot water lines. Flushing the inner tank is critical to this process. If it's not flushed completely the settlement will remain in the bottom of the inner tank. Try using vinegar in the system to get rid of the smell, you will need to put vinegar and water solution in the water tank pump it into the water heater and through the lines. Leave the solution set for a few hours and then you flush with clean water. I'm not sure if the anti-freeze solution will solve the problem, as I have never tried that. Be well and thanks, again!

I would like to install a vertical assist handle to get in and out of our tub shower in our R-Vision travel trailer. I don't know how to find the stud for mounting the handle. Also, the switch for the water pump is just above the bathroom light switch. I did not have water in the fresh water tank and my wife accidentally hit the water pump switch instead of the light switch. By the time I noticed it and listened for the pump I heard nothing. Do you think we burned out the pump?

Hello, Don and thanks for your questions. In order to locate a stud in the wall behind your shower, or anywhere else in your RV, purchase a good quality stud finder at a local home or building supply center. Having a vertical assist handle installed is an invaluable safety measure I highly recommend. Be sure to use a bathtub or silicone sealant around the screws after installation and allow adequate drying time prior to use. As far as the water pump issue- without knowing how long the water pump was running before you noticed the mix-up, I can’t be 100% sure with an answer. The pumps are designed to run for days without doing damage to the motor so let’s hope you’re in the clear. Check the fuses and see if there is 12-V power to the pump on both sides of the pressure switch. If so, then the pump will need to be replaced. If this is indeed the case, I suggest buying the new, ShurFlo Revolution Water Pump.

Q: Hi Bill. I read your article in the March Trail Blazer. I am interest in using Spic & Span to clean the rubber roof, I had a 2000 Sierra and cleaned the roof with ThetFord and it stained the paint. I now have a 2013 Jayco. Here is my concern- will Spic & Span stain the graphics & paint once you rinse the roof off. What is the proper way to use this product? I enjoy your Q&A.

Pete, My guess is that the Thetford product was a little bit too caustic for the sides of your coach. Sorry to hear you had troubles. The rubber roof manufacturer, Dicor, recommends the use of Spic & Span Cleaner and I personally have used this formula myself with much success for many years at my RV shop. I use half the recommended amount of cleaner in a 5-gallon bucket, ¾ full with water. Be sure to rinse off the sides of the RV before it dries! Be safe up there and please let me know if I can be of any further assistance in the future.

Traveling and Camping with Companion Animals

Q: Hi, Jenn…I have two cats and one

dog and my Hubby and I are wanting to explore more National Parks this summer rather than just our local state parks and Thousand Trails. We love to take the pets along but worry they won’t enjoy it as we hear the rules are very strict with pets in NP’s. Any thoughts or advice you can share would be helpful to fellow travelers – we enjoy your monthly column that subjects around our favorite topics – RV traveling AND our pets! Meow and Woof, Melinda and Jack Packer, Freeman, WA

A: Yes, indeed, the Thousand Trails System of nationwide parks allows for campers to enjoy a lot more freedom when in your campsite than you will find from a National Park. Maybe you can plan to travel with a friend who can stay back at camp to pet sit while you and your Husband hit the National Park’s highlights and dirt trails? If your RV length permits, you can camp inside a NP with pets, but you will need to check each NP’s specific pet policy prior to making a set plan of action. Some NP’s require that your pets all be checked in at the arrival gate and must not be left unattended in a soft sided (pop-up tent styled) unit for safety and noise nuance reasons. Many parks do not offer sites with power and, as I’m sure you are aware, your pets would be in danger of overheating in the summer months. Most NP’s allow for pets to be walked on designated

paved bike paths, around the visitor center and in the campground while other parks have very strict rules in place that really limit where you can exercise your animals. A helpful website that I often refer to is www.usparks.about.com. The best National Park I have been to so far that was the most pet friendly, I even saw cats being walked via a well-fitted harness, was at the South Rim of The Grand Canyon. We make friends with our neighbors and tag teamed our daily plans to help facilitate all of our pets’ potty and walk-about needs so the other party could have a more enjoyable day on the rim. The Grand Canyon heats up in the summer so you may want to think about heading north and/or into more altitude if the fur kids need to join you. National Parks like Crater Lake in Oregon (you could camp at the Sunriver TT Preserve) or Glacier NP are incredible, must see spots, but both have strict pet policies. No matter where you go, be sure that your pets are outfitted with secure fitted collars and i.d. tags. Good luck and thank you for thinking of your pets’ needs before your own as they depend on us for such great care!

A: Hello, Friends! Thanks for the

question and I’m so pleased to have helped inspire you to think outside the box in Jack’s training. Pay attention to how your dog naturally chooses to express his emotions. For example, when my dog, Ginger, would be demanding, she would kick out with her back left leg. At first I thought it was a fluke, but as I began to study her behavior over the weeks, I noticed how frequently she used this “kick” as a signal for something she wanted. Each time she would start this behavior, I would simply say the word, “kick”, and reward her with a tiny snack or word of praise. After a short time, my smart girl would perform this trick on command. What this process thought me was to simply be more attentive to the individual ways each animal presents his or her personality and use that as a platform to teach and train. Not a day goes by where I am not amazing at just how much animals seek out our attention and reward us with their companionship. I look forward to hearing what your boy has to share with you.
