For those who have caught the bug or will inevitably catch it, fly fishing can definitely be addictive. There is certainly something special about communing with Mother Nature – and fish – on a quiet tree-shaded stream, a rushing river, or some other fresh or salty body of water across the country.

or those who have caught the bug or will inevitably catch it, fly fishing can definitely be addictive. There is certainly something special about communing with Mother Nature – and fish – on a quiet tree-shaded stream, a rushing river, or some other fresh or salty body of water across the country. That must be why so many RVers pursue fish on the fly and why many more follow in their wakes every day. Whether a first-timer or a veteran fly fisher, Orvis retail stores and fly fishing programs and schools across the country provide a great place to start. Boasting a long fly fishing pedigree, Orvis was founded back in 1856 with the belief that the most meaningful experiences are created by sharing a love of nature and being inspired by its endless possibilities.

rvis was a pioneer in the mail order industry long before the likes of Amazon and Amazon Prime even existed. Today, Orvis operates more than 80 retail stores in 43 states in the U.S. and more than a dozen in the United Kingdom, as well as maintaining an elite network of more than 400 Authorized Orvis Dealers worldwide who also serve as a trusted source for fly fishing and much more. The possibilities for catching fish on the fly include: panfish in lakes and ponds (crappie, sunfish, bluegill, and more); bass and pickerel (often found feeding on small panfish); trout and much more in cold water rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds; fabled salmon; and a wide variety of saltwater fish, like tarpon, bonefish, permit, redfish, stripers, bluefish, and more. Of course, sometimes a boat or guide is required-and it's imperative to check local fishing regulations and licensing. That’s another area where Orvis can be your fishing buddy for life. Fly Fishing 101 – and Beyond According to Tom Rosenbauer, marketing director for Orvis Rod & Tackle, fly fishing is quite hot these days. Rosenbauer should know. He’s the host of “Orvis Guide to Fly Fishing” on World Fishing Network (WFN) and author of many popular books about fly fishing (including the classic Orvis Fly-Fishing Guide and his brand-new book, Fly Fishing for Trout-The Next Level). He says, “We host free fly fishing clinics [Fly Fishing 101] in all of our retail stores and they're very popular.”

MAY 2017 TRAILBLAZER
The regularly scheduled and free Fly Fishing 101 clinics offer an efficient and convenient way to get introduced to the sport or to refresh rusty skills. They’re offered to all ages, though those 16 and under must be accompanied by a family member. Typically held on Saturdays and Sundays starting in the spring and running through June, it’s typically easy to find a Fly Fishing 101 class that’s already on the docket somewhere on the road.
Typically running about 2 ½ hours, Fly Fishing 101 provides details and hands-on instruction on fly casting and outfit rigging. Those who have completed Fly Fishing 101 will want to ask about Fly Fishing 201, which features an outing on local water (a nominal fee for the outing may apply). Upon completion of the courses, participants receive special in-store offers valid toward the purchase of Orvis products and a free Trout Unlimited membership (a $35 value).

Get Schooled Rosenbauer also recommends Orvis's famed Fly Fishing Schools, which are available in a variety of topics, lengths, and locations across the country. “The Orvis schools will save you years of trial and error,” says Peter Kutzer, Orvis Adventures Specialist with the fabled company. Kutzer says Orvis opened the country's first fly fishing school in 1966 with the hopes of drawing 20 students to the first class – and 150-plus people signed up. More than 50 years later, Orvis fly fishing school locations at iconic fly fishing destinations range from Orvis “Mecca” in Manchester, Vermont, to varied options elsewhere in the Northeast, the Southeast, the Midwest, and the West. With more than two dozen specialty fly fishing and fishing schools across the country, it’s easy for a fisher of any skill level to improve through Orvis’s offerings to get schooled. There are currently schools in: Florida (Islamorada and Key Largo); Alabama (Sylacauga); North Carolina (Asheville); Tennessee (Sevierville);
Pennsylvania (Farmington); Rhode Island (Middletown); New York (Millbrook, Hancock, and Pulaski); Vermont (at Orvis HQ in Manchester); Ohio (Clyde); Michigan (Glen Arbor); Wisconsin (Kohler); Colorado (Edwards and Crested Butte (teen camp only); Utah (Park City and Altamont); Wyoming (Jackson); Montana (Bozeman, Ennes, and Ovando (kids camp only)); Idaho (Coeur D’Alene); and Oregon (Merlin). These locations generally offer one- and two-day fly fishing schools and more. The everpopular hands-on schools cover: Orvis's progressive and adaptable fly casting techniques, including video analysis; essential fly fishing knots; how to choose gear and tackle; stream entomology (the science of insects); proper fly selection; reading water and currents; and how to play, land, and safely release fish. Many of the schools are held at renowned resorts, providing a luxurious location for those getting schooled and those just along for the ride. For instance, the Asheville, North Carolina,
location is at renowned Biltmore Estate, with its tours of Biltmore House, gardens, grounds, Antler Hill Village & Winery, varied dining and accommodations, shopping, and lots of outdoors activities beyond the world-class fly fishing offerings. Several other U.S. locations also offer specialty schools. These include: the Everglades Saltwater School in Islamorada, Florida; the False Albacore Saltwater School in Middletown, Rhode Island; the Complete Trout School in Hancock, New York; an array of specialty schools and classes at Orvis HQ in Manchester, Vermont; a Complete Trout School in Altamont, Utah, and in Ennis, Montana; and a Three-Day Steelhead School in Merlin, Oregon. For those who can’t make it to a school (yet), the aforementioned clinics and more at Orvis retail stores across the country also provide a great place to start. Rosenbauer says the stores are also great resources for insider information and guidance for local fly fishing around the corner – and around the country. MAY 2017 TRAILBLAZER

Get Going
Of course, a fly fishing addiction will likely lead to an addiction to fly fishing gear as well. Orvis accommodates with a wide array of options to make the sport more enjoyable and successful.

Fortunately, North America’s Orvis locations feature worldclass fly fishing hotspots in many diverse locations – meaning it's a great idea to have your gear onboard at all times.
With products that blend cuttingedge technology with style and comfort, Orvis features a wide range of fly fishing gear that’s considered among the finest in the industry. Here in the United States you’ll find a fly fishing destination on every corner of the map. For instance, Maine’s Libby Sporting Camps (2007 Lodge of the Year) accommodates guests in private log cabins, with family-style meals served in its historic lodge, while anglers fish for brook trout, landlocked salmon, and other species that change with the seasons. Or, choose Alaska for its char, salmon, and trout. Orvis has twice bestowed Alaska’s Crystal Creek Lodge with the distinguished Fly Fishing Lodge of the Year award; it’s a trusted partnership going back to 1991. Back in the Lower 48, the C Lazy U Ranch touts “something for everyone,” including horseback riding, incredible trout fishing, and gourmet cuisine in its historic Granby, Colorado ranch setting. Or, California’s Sierra Fly Fisher guide service in Bass Lake serves beginners through advanced anglers, with excursions to Yosemite National Park and the Sierra Nevada on waters teeming with rainbows, brooks, browns, and rarer golden trout populations. Up north, fishing Quebec’s Grand Cascapédia with a stay at Salmon Lodge is a Canadian (and Orvis) 24

classic. Other options include catching the northern lights (and fish) on Wollaston Lake in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In the Caribbean and Central America, there’s world-class bonefishing at varied Orvis-vetted resorts. There’s also their fourday Belize Fly Fishing School at El Pescador. South American offerings include Venezuela, Chile, and Argentina, where Orvis Board Chairman Leigh Perkins’s penchant for the Estancia Tecka is predicated on his intimate knowledge of the waters there. Each of New Zealand’s two exquisite fly fishing destinations also offers diversions for the non-anglers, as do many other of our vacation packages. Asian trips remove anglers from civilization to the far reaches of Mongolia, where the adventure goes beyond fishing for prehistoric salmonids to include a brush with the indigenous culture of the region’s nomadic population. In Europe, Africa, and elsewhere are also on the Orvis map. Thus, from around the corner to around the world, it’s easy to feed a new or long-time fly fishing addiction. Just make sure Orvis is your fly fishing buddy.

Photographer
ERIN DORBIN by Lynn & Cele Seldon
Whether you spend life on the road for pleasure or work, it's nice to have the comforts of home as you travel the highways and byways. TRAILBLAZER checks in with folks who spend a fair amount of time on the road to see just what makes their home away from home. This month, we chatted with Americana historian, photographer, documentarian, and preservationist, Erin Dorbin. With a host of titles, job descriptions, and impressive cultural achievements on her resume, Erin Dorbin describes herself as a believer in the sense of place. In her mind, place matters. History matters. And, most importantly, preservation of both matters. Growing up in a small town in the rural Midwest, Dorbin was drawn to a sense of place from a young age. She was fascinated by the details of the towns and regions around her and fell in love with drive-in theaters, neon signs, and unique landmarks across the Midwest. And, as time moved on and she began to see these touches of Americana dwindle and decay, she committed her life to the preservation of these one-ofa-kind landscapes through writing, photography, education, and storytelling. Now through partnerships with institutions such as the Smithsonian, the Minnesota Humanities Center, the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and many others, as well as her own ‘zine’ series, photography travelogues, public history narratives, documentaries, handmade clothing, and more, she’s spreading the gospel of the economic, cultural, and social power of historic preservation. And, she’s done much of it from her two classic RVs.
MAY 2017 TRAILBLAZER 27 MAY 2017 TRAILBLAZER 27
How did you discover your love of Americana and the American landscape? The moment I got my driver’s license all I wanted to do was explore. I would take off and keep turning in directions I’d never been before, with the singular goal of getting lost. I’d always stop for a meal at a new place along the way and soak in some of the local culture. My eyes and heart were drawn to the places that were distinctly of that town, or region. I began taking an interest in the built environment of my hometown of Kalamazoo, Michigan after I first moved away from the area. I’d frequently return home and notice that the unique characteristics of Kalamazoo and some of its area landmarks were beginning to disappear. I used my photos to attract viewers’ eyes, spark their memories, and encourage support for preservation of these one-of-akind locations.
What kind of RV(s) do you have? In 2008, I became the proud owner of a 1968 Shasta 1400 – with wings. It’s 14’ long. I also adopted a 1973 Avion Travelcader in 2015 that is 25’. That’s 28
MAY 2017 TRAILBLAZER
enormous compared to what I was used to with the Shasta.
You’ve published several photo zines from your travels. What exactly is a zine? “Zine” is borrowed from “magazine” and refers to self-published works that are distributed in small runs through different social and like-minded communities. I didn’t have much to say using words, but I did have a lot to communicate about places I’d visited and my reflections on them using images. I started my zine series, “Uncommon Spaces & Everyday Places” in 2011. I just completed Volume 4.
Tell us about your first RV experience. My first RV experience was in a vintage camper with my family in the early 1980s. We had a little 1960’s Gem camper that we took out on regular camping trips around the state of Michigan. I can still remember the smell of the interior of the camper today. It had bunks in the rear and it was such a big deal to get up on the top bunk with an older brother fighting me for it. The front had a dinette and another bunk above
which I also thought was so cool to climb up and sleep in. I remember its jalousie windows and cracking the glass in them numerous times by cranking the window closed too tightly. When we weren’t camping, it was parked in our yard just on the other side of a row of tall pine trees making it a really cool private spot for me to host slumber parties on the weekends with my friends.
Word has it that you traveled the historic Lincoln Highway in your camper. Can you tell us more about that? For 4 months [in 2013] I lived out of my Shasta and documented the people and places of the Lincoln Highway for Wyoming’s State Historic Preservation Office. I started out in Kalamazoo, MI where the Shasta had been stored and drove down to catch I-80 in Indiana and passed through Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming. When I first arrived in Wyoming, I set up camp just across the state line at a former Boeing-owned RV camp. It was created to provide temporary living accommodations for its workforce fifty years prior. Once the company no longer had use
for it, the town of Pine Bluffs acquired it. They operated the campground for mostly yearround residents and transient wind turbine workers and their families. By this point I’d traveled over 1,000 miles. I made Pine Bluffs, Wyoming my home base for several weeks. I eventually had to move my home base to a private campsite over at Curt Gowdy State Park, positioned between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming, at nearly 8,000 ft. elevation. There were so many highlights from the trip. Every day seemed to trump the last as it unfolded. There were many serendipitous meetings along the roadway and amazing people and remnants of roadside architecture that captured my attention and my heart.
What’s your favorite thing about staying on your RV versus a hotel room? It’s home. It’s private. It’s my bed. It’s exactly how I want it to be, without the intrusion of hotel staff. It’s cheaper, too. Sitting in a camper with the windows open and a breeze blowing through, sipping your morning coffee is one of the most comfortable experiences I’ve ever had. I also love how I’m more inclined to go
to bed naturally when it becomes dark out and wake up when the sun comes up. I don’t rely on an alarm clock.
What are your three favorite things onboard your camper? My electric guitar, a small amp, and my French press.
Do you listen to music when you travel? What kind? I listen to a lot of Dwight Yoakam and classic country. Trucker tunes about life on the road are quite fitting. “Eastbound (even though I was westbound) and Down” by Jerry Reed, [and] Eddie Rabbit’s “Driving My Life Away” were two faves on the Lincoln Highway trip. John Conlee’s “Back Side of Thirty” always hit my heart as I was traveling solo at just over 30. Johnny Paycheck is always welcome, too.
Once you reach your destination, what are some of your rituals? I think it’s first and foremost hoping I do an acceptable job parking the camper. The first few nights after I’d reach the campsite I’d be afraid of unhitching the truck because I worried I’d struggle to get it reconnected
easily the next day. I encountered several older gentlemen who would eye me as they saw a young woman, alone, pulling into a campground. They’d keep their eyes glued to me until I got parked. One even rode over on his four wheeler to confess, “I wasn’t sure about you when you first pulled in, but then I saw you park and realized you’re all right.” I also had a huge snake attached to the underside of my Shasta one of my first nights on the Lincoln Highway, so I check for snakes now.
What are a few favorite destinations? They always turn out to be the unassuming places. The “in between” stops and locations. They are the places that probably everyone else would, and do, overlook. I already mentioned Pine Bluffs, WY, but Nebraska had several unforgettable experiences for me in the towns of Kimball, Sydney, Lodgepole and Chappell. These places had everything I’m looking for: movie theatres (indoor and drive-in), tourist cabins, filling stations, cafés, neon and interesting people to gab with.

Any bucket list destinations?
Do you cook onboard?
Right now, it’s Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. Beyond that, a trip to the Black Hills and Adirondacks are most definitely in order.
Unfortunately, I don’t cook much. That said, the small size of the Shasta appliances has never been an issue for me.
I guess we don’t need to ask this but do you tend to travel the highways or scenic routes?
What’s your favorite meal to enjoy on the road?
Around the time I got my driver’s license, I became frustrated with the sameness of my surroundings. A Walgreens here, a Walmart there – the businesses and buildings of distinction were being purchased and razed for the erection of big box stores. The two-laners and scenic routes remind me that that there are places that still stand out along the landscape that attract my eye and spark my interest. They are those that have not yet been demolished, converted, or conformed to meet today's bland design standards.
Did you travel alone or with companions (two-or four-legged)? This trip was one that I proudly took alone. It was something I needed to do for myself.

This really surprises a lot of people when I tell them, but the best meals I’ve had on the road were in Burns, Wyoming at a former 1920’s Lincoln Highway roadside station, the Antelope Truck Stop. There is an incredible Indian restaurant in this former American diner space. It’s very 1970’s-ish, complete with wood paneling, and it is honestly some of the best Indian food I’ve ever had. Picture cowboys and Bollywood, with the best samosa plate you’ve ever had.

“
Lake George is without comparison, the most beautiful water I ever saw; formed by a contour of mountains into a basin…finely interspersed with islands, its water limpid as crystal, and the mountain sides covered with rich groves… down to the water-edge: here and there precipices of rock to checker the scene and save it from monotony.

Prospect Mountain to Million Dollar Beach Have you ever wanted to be in the mountains in the morning and end your day with a sunset on the beach? Give yourself a day to experience the best of the outdoors that Lake George has to offer! Head out from Lake George Escape Campground on US 9 to reach the trailhead at Prospect Mountain, famous for its 100-mile view of the Adirondacks at the peak. Don’t forget that camera! If you’re a moderately experienced hiker and are up for a challenge, hiking to the top is a worthwhile experience. FARM TO TABLE NATIONWIDE Fast forward some 40-plus years, and the movement is stronger than ever for several reasons. Whether you call it farm to table, farm to fork or farm fresh, it is really about what you’re eating. Justin Burdett, Chef-owner at Local Provisions in Asheville, North Carolina said “I’m not the biggest fan of the phrase “farm to table” – it really should just be how we eat. It’s better for us, more accessible and helps the local economy. That said I’m glad that it’s become so popular and mainstream. I hope that we’ll eventually be able to drop the farm to table reference and it will become the standard for which most restaurants source.” What people consider “farm to table" is that the food being served came directly from a specific farm, without going through a store, market, or distributor along the way. “Local foods are popping up all over the USA,” said noted Charleston chef, Frank Lee. “Patrons enjoy the diverse and quality products.” “We need to know where our food is coming from and how it is grown,” said Daniel Mondok, Executive Chef at Raven & Rose in Portland, Oregon. “It’s how we can ensure a healthier future.” 36
MAY 2017 TRAILBLAZER
“Chefs have been a strong voice for the connection to local farms and food producers. Together with consumers’ interest in health and the medical community finally admitting links between diet and disease transparency in food ways are now front and center in our national consciousness,” said Lee. One thing farm to table enthusiasts, both patrons and chefs, understand is that menus can change daily depending upon the season and what farmers have available. “Being able to make the necessary changes on your menu based on the daily available product is the only way you can participate fully in farm to table,” said John Zucker, Chef-owner of Cru Café and Cru Catering in Charleston, South Carolina. Zucker also said that as more farmers are available to the restaurants their product will be more accessible. “You will see that more local purveyors will have access to the products and more restaurants will be able to participate.” As for the future, Burdett said he hopes we’ll see the movement spread further beyond just restaurants so people understand that it’s easy to cook that way at home as well.

Traveling and Camping with Companion Animals
Jenn, I have a hyper eight-month-old Australian Shepherd. I got Miss May because I knew I was an active person but I think this dog is smarter than I realized. Do you have any suggestions for on the road mental stimulation as well as physical that might help wind my dog down a bit more when we have long days on the road in between campsites? My dog gets carsick as well so I am unable to give her breakfast in the morning, which adds to her anxiousness, and I will not drug her. Thank you for your advice, Terri and Miss May JENN Hello, Terry. Anxiety in conjunction with brilliance can be a delicate combination of character traits. Certainly, they’re also what make the Australian Shepherd shine. I highly suggest that you find a space to work the dog on basic agility commands for 15 to 30 minutes if possible before heading out on your journey. A lot of these commands can be worked on with the leash so you don’t have to worry about her getting away from you in a strange area. I also suggest mixing it up by taking her for a bike ride or brisk walk/run to help smooth out some physical energy. As we know, a smart dog will get bored quickly and the goal is to 42

keep her interest in learning while burning off excess steam. I know that you mentioned she gets carsick when she has breakfast in the morning – maybe you could give her a special toy to play with in the car or a hard, grain free chew such as a No Hide or a Whimzie. Lots of praise and encouragement from you will build trust and help to bring her more confidence. While she may consume these chewables, and throw them up, at least she won’t be vomiting a full meal and clean up will be easier. She may also enjoy having something to pacify her when on the go and feeling a bit worried and also being hungry. I have fed Primal raw food & treats to our two small dogs for years with great success. We recently lost one of our beloved family members and acquired an adopted foster dog that has won our hearts. The problem is he weighs 95 pounds and we simply cannot afford to feed him the same way we feed our other dog. I am committed to continuing to feed raw food to our Pug but I am struggling in picking out a suitable kibble for our new big boy, Joey. He is an easy one to feed and eats about anything- help steer me to a quality kibble please. Love your monthly column! - Darla JENN I’m so sorry for the loss of your other Pug – My sincere condolences. Once you go raw, it’s really a struggle to buy kibble again. But rest assured, you can still feed high quality and incorporate the many added
benefits of raw into Joey’s life. Here are a few thoughts for everyone to help find a happy medium for both the budget and our pets health; keep all foods and treats grain free, made and sourced in America, never feed rawhide, and be committed to reading the labels on everything you purchase and feed. Consider using daily Primal Goats Milk that is jam packed with natural, organic anti-inflammatories such as Turmeric, cinnamon and ginger. Start very slowly when introducing the goat milk but the easily digested lactobacillus characteristics will help strengthen your pets G.I. system even if you are not feeding a raw diet exclusively. Everything made from Primal is tested to be free of pathogens and harmful bacterias before it hitting the market. Their free-range goats are hormone free and Goat’s Milk an excellent way to elevate your pets health on a daily basis and suitable for all life stages even if you can not afford to feed 100% raw. With Joey, use your regular Primal freeze dried food as your go to snack and training treats, that way, you can add in superior nutrition as much as you can. Remember that buying 6 lb. frozen bags of Primal is much more cost effective than freeze dried – maybe a solid option down the road to consider when making the doggie budget. As far as selecting a kibble, I would recommend single meat protein sources and rotate every bag. Try Vita Source by KLN and go with the Grain Free Duck and Lentils and rotate with the Salmon. Use raw bones as weekly treats for the marrow benefits. As a rule, always be sure the bones are never cooked to avoid splintering & large enough to never be swallowed. Thanks for opening your hearts to a dog in need!

RVing is a great adventure and there’s always something new to learn!
by Paul and Kerri Elders This month, we’ll look at some quick and easy tips for keeping your RV’s engine cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. We’ll also explore hitch maintenance and learn a bit about the importance of emergency trailer braking systems. Let’s go! Hitch Maintenance: If you tow a trailer, your tow vehicle’s hitch is the lifeline between the tower and the towed, and it should be meticulously maintained. Luckily, hitch maintenance is fairly simple and straightforward. For bumper tow vehicles, be sure to inspect the ball clamp on your tow vehicle before each use and check to see that the trailer’s coupler latching mechanism is operating properly before each hookup. Lubricate as needed. It’s also a good idea to thoroughly inspect all fasteners for tightness at least every 2,000 miles of operation. If you pull a fifth wheel or gooseneck, clean and lubricate your fifth wheel or gooseneck ball and receiver before and after each trip. It’s also a good idea to grease the load-bearing surfaces with lithium grease every 2,000 miles. Not only does this make the hitch operate more smoothly, but it significantly reduces wear and improves turning performance. Emergency Trailer Breakaway Systems: Trailers that require brakes must be equipped with an emergency breakaway braking system. If the trailer separates from the tow vehicle for any reason while being towed, the emergency breakaway system will automatically engage the trailer’s brakes, bringing the trailer to a safe stop. Hydraulic and electric emergency breakaway systems are 44
MAY 2017 TRAILBLAZER
engineered specifically for your trailer’s brake type. With a hydraulic surge brake system, a cable or chain is connected to the tow vehicle. If the trailer should break away during towing, this mechanical connecting linkage activates the master cylinder, immediately engaging the trailer brakes. If your trailer has electric brakes, the breakaway system is comprised of a breakaway switch with a pull pin and a cable attached to your tow vehicle; a separate battery is usually required for the trailer itself, to power the breakaway system in an emergency. If the trailer disconnects from the tow vehicle during highway travel, the trailer’s emergency battery backup system will provide electrical power to the brakes, slowing the trailer to a safe stop. Regardless of the type of breakaway system your trailer has, it’s important to USE it. ALWAYS connect your breakaway cable or chain to your tow vehicle each and every time you hook up your trailer, no matter how short a trip you anticipate taking. And always use safety chains on bumper towed trailers, because Grandma was right: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Keeping Your Cool: Antifreeze/ coolant (usually a formulation based on propylene glycol) is an essential chemical that serves a valuable purpose all year long. By making water a more efficient conductor of heat, antifreeze/ coolant (hereinafter “coolant”) allows the engine to run cooler in the summertime. In the wintertime, this very same chemical protects the engine block from freezing. Depending on the brand and
formulation, coolant also often contains anti-corrosive agents that work to help prevent rusting and corrosion within the coolant system. Coolant should never be added to a hot or running engine and you should NEVER check a radiator when the engine is hot. Only add coolant when the engine is off and the engine has cooled. The coolant reservoir is usually an opaque plastic tank with a “fill” line on the side, found in the engine compartment. If you can’t locate the reservoir, check your owner’s manual; it’s possible that older models may not have a reservoir, in which case coolant is poured directly into the radiator. Dilute the coolant as recommended on its label. Some formulations require a 50/50 dilution with water; others are “pre-mixed” so that no additional water is needed. Conventional coolant is both very toxic and sweet-tasting; always keep it out of the reach of children and pets. If you ever have a spill, wipe it up completely and rinse the area thoroughly with fresh water. Safely dispose of all rags used to clean the area, again keeping them out of reach of children and pets. Since conventional coolant deteriorates with age, it should be drained, flushed, and replaced every other year. Long-life coolant should be replaced about every five years. Although you can do it yourself, flushing and replacing coolant is a job best performed by a professional mechanic. Used coolant is considered a hazardous chemical and must be disposed of properly; automotive service centers have the facilities to do this. Happy trails!

Who’s in the kitchen with
TrailBlazer?
For the love of lemons! As we begin to transition to warmer weather and those hot summer days I wanted to lighten the meals a bit for this issue. A couple of the recipes call for lemons which have so many health benefits! Lemons are considered a cleanser and purifier which makes them great for your digestion and overall well being. Not only do they help rejuvenate and detoxify the liver but they also help jump start your digestion. I love slicing them into wedges at the beginning of the week so I have them on hand to toss into a cold glass of water on a hot day. In the morning you can heat a cup of hot water with a slice of lemon to get your metabolism and digestive system ready for the day! Having a sour candy craving? Opt for a slice of lemon with a small sprinkle of coconut sugar! It’s a healthier way to curb your sweet tooth! Looking for a healthy salad dressing? Opt for a couple tablespoons of olive oil and a touch of lemon juice to brighten things up! The possibilities are endless!

Strange Smell
Q
Bill, When we are driving our 2002 Winnebago motorhome we get a sewer smell that fills the inside of the coach. Fortunately, it only occurs during hot weather, but after several hundred miles it does get kind of old. I have asked several of your friends if they are experiencing the same problem, which they are not. Do you have any suggestions? Shane
Macerator Pumps
Q
Bill, On our last camping trip a friend of mine was using what he called a macerator to dump his holding tanks. I had never heard or seen such a thing. It was quite impressive how fast it emptied the black tank through a small hose. He explained to me how nice it was to be able to use it at home rather than going to a dump station & how he could run the waste through a 1-inch hose for 150 feet to a sewer clean out on the side of his house. I need this! I would love to be able to do the same thing at my house rather than having to find a dump station every time we go for a

Hello, Shane. Over the years I’ve run into this problem periodically. Tracking down a smell that occurs only when you’re driving is rather difficult and there isn’t enough peppermint oil or chewing gum in the world to mask such odor. I don’t know which model motorhome you have but start by looking under your galley and bathroom sinks and see if you have a vent check valve mounted at the top of the gray tank vent pipe protruding up thru the floor. This vent is designed to allow you to drain the tanks without allowing fumes into your RV. When manufacturers are unable to run the vent pipe through the roof, they will use this check valve to be able to vent the tank
properly. While driving, a slight vacuum pressure can a raise the seal of the check valve filling the inside of the coach with the odor. The seal can also warp over time allowing odor to seep into your rig. The check valve is just threaded into place so it’s easy to change. Something else you may want to check are the P-trap’s for the galley and bathroom sinksif they are empty the odor can come up through the P-trap’s. Simply put a little bit of gray tank deodorant and run a little bit of water through each P-trap before you drive. One way to test this would be to empty both your holding tanks & leave the valves open to air dry before driving it. After the holding tanks completely dry, you shouldn’t get any odor from them.
weekend outing. What make a type of macerator do you suggest for my 2006 motorhome?
hose up to 150 feet for the discharge hose. Macerator pumps can be mounted permanently or temporarily. Make sure that you add a switch with wiring according to the manufacturer specifications as they do draw quite a bit of amperage. As far as the make, check out Thetford’s new macerator pump that should be available to the public in late April 2017. I have personally tested the unique design and it is very impressive. The macerator can by hooked up permanently as it has its own flow through design. In other words, the gray water will flow through the macerator without having to run the pump.

Zach, Macerator pumps have been around for many years for RV use as well as marine use. They really are amazing! There are several brands that will work for your needs but make sure it has a 3-inch input and a 1½ inch output. Go to a hardware store and get a short piece of 1½ inch clear tubing with a male hose end adapter and make a pigtail for the macerator pump. You can use any 1-inch garden
Fiberglass Sheeting
Q
Bill, I have owned my 1994 Pace Arrow motorhome since it was new. The last couple of years some large and small bubbles have appeared on both sides of the motorhome in the fiberglass sheeting. Our local repair shop said it was not repairable. The inside of our motorhome is still like new and do not want to get rid of it and buy a new one. Do you have any suggestions that would be a simple repair? Daniel
A
What you have described was a very common problem for the early 1990 Fleetwood models. First of all, you’ll need to stop the rain leak that’s getting in under the filon, which the siding is made of, creating the problem. 99% of the time the bubbles are occurring around or near a piece of molding, baggage door or a window. If possible, remove these to gain access to the bubbled out material. Inject a marine epoxy into the area that is bubbled out; be careful not to use too much epoxy, as it will be difficult to make it lay flat. Next use a piece of plywood or plastic to hold the siding flat and secure it by wedging a 2 x 4 between a building or solid object until the epoxy dries. If you’re unable to gain access to the bubble, you could drill a small hole in the upper part of the bubble to inject the epoxy. I’ve done this many times over the years and it works quite well.
Slide Out Room
Q
Hey Bill, it was very nice meeting you at the Rancho Oso preserve. I have a question about my 2003 Discovery motorhome I purchased about a year ago. The top of the passenger side slide out room has swelled up in several places causing some low spots along where the seal makes contact. It’s almost like there’s particleboard underneath the rubber roof material, however I’m not certain what the material is. Every time I bring the slide out room in after a rain I get soaked from the standing water. Sometimes, I even experience a rain leak into one of the cupboards at the top of the slide out. I have slide out awnings over both of my slide out room but unfortunately they don’t seem to keep the rain out. Any suggestions? Dean
GOT A QUESTION FOR BILL? SEND AN EMAIL TO
A
Sorry you are to having so much trouble with a rain leak. I know how irritating that this can be. I am assuming that the slide out awning fabric is in good shape; they tend to sag badly after several years. If the slide toppers fabric is sagging have somebody wind the spring 4 or 5 more turns to keep the fabric a little bit tighter thus preventing the rain from running through the sagging fabric. Have the slide out seals checked with a bright flashlight to make sure that they’re coming into contact with the top of the slide out room. Repairing the bulging slide out roof is going to be very difficult. I would suggest making some sort of a small dam along the top of the slide out room just outside of the seal to prevent the water from running inside. As far as the cupboard leak, the pooling water maybe running through a small crack in the sealant somewhere, if so, this needs to be addressed before wood rot sets in. You may need to remove the slide topper and the seals to really get a good look at the moldings and sealant.
