MESSAGE from MARGUERITE In my opening message for 2015, I challenged each of you to resolve to enjoy the outdoors and Get Out and Camp. For a group who loves camping and outdoor vacations, this seems like a simple task, but we all know a year can fly by and time escapes easily. However, based on the images and feedback shared throughout the year it would appear that many of you took this resolution to heart. Your feedback was full of phrases like staff attitude, lots of upgrades, and gorgeous campground. We appreciate of your feedback and were happy to hear about how many positive memories were made throughout the course of 2015. As you can see from the word cloud above, it sounds like the camping season was a “wonderful experience” with staff that went “above and beyond!” As we look back on the year, I am pleased with many of the improvements we were able to complete to help better your camping experience. From upgraded pools, sports courts and welcome centers, to roads and infrastructure enhancements, our crews worked hard to upgrade the locations so many of you know and love. We were able to create a resort style pool area at Chestnut Lake and have sports courts that rival the local hotels at Lake Conroe. You can check all of them out in the Upgrades section on page 26. Hopefully we’ve added a few more amenities to your list of favorites or gave a past favorite a makeover. And, we’re not through, yet! 2016 will bring a few more updates and upgrades your way, and I can’t wait to hear your feedback.
“Your camping resort was breathtaking. Sure wish we lived closer to the camp ground to enjoy the lake and pool area. Enjoyed going to the different shops in the area. We truly enjoyed ourselves at your camp ground and hope to be back real soon. Oh, by the way we also purchased the Elite membership from Mr. Cox. Very nice man. Tell him hello for us. Thanks Again” Eldon & Jo Ann at Lake Conroe RV & Camping Resort As we look to next year, we remain focused on improving your journey with Thousand Trails. Whether that journey involves a visit to your favorite location or a phone call to one of our representatives, our goal is to ensure we provide an excellent customer journey time and again. We’re in this journey together and want to make it the best it can be. We will remain focused on initiatives that continue to enhance your experience with Thousand Trails, and we thank you for your feedback on what is working well, or where we may need to provide a bit more focus. It’s truly valuable and has helped drive recent updates and upgrades! Thanks to all for a great year and let the journey continue!

RVing is a great adventure and there’s always something new to learn!
by Paul and Kerri Elders
One of the great fringe benefits of traveling the wide world in an RV is that you’re free to fully enjoy the lifestyle whether you’re a Total Newbie or an Old Vet Traveler. This month, we’ll take a look at some quick tips that hit the spot, wherever you are on the RV Experience Scale. Let the fun begin! Freshwater Tips for Newbies: The white water hoses available at RV supply houses are called “potable hoses” and they’re the only go-to solution for hooking up to a water supply or filling your freshwater tank. Standard off-theshelf green garden hoses aren’t suitable for drinking water purposes. They give water an “off taste” and can transfer bacteria and chemical residues directly into your freshwater system. Use green garden hoses only for cleaning up or washing your rig, and your white hose ONLY for drinking water purposes. Store your drinking water hose with both ends screwed together; this keeps dirt out and will help extend the useful life of the hose and its nontoxic inner lining. Level-Headed Leveling Tips: Leveling jacks help stabilize and level your RV. A level rig is not only more comfortable for you and your family, it’s also important for optimal function of all the RV’s systems (water, refrigeration, A/C etc.). Levelers can be activated mechanically, electrically, hydraulically, or by air, depending on their make and model. Leveling jacks even help take some of the load off your tires and suspension system while parked. On soft soil or thin or hot asphalt, it’s a good idea to place a board under the jack’s footpads to keep them from sinking into the ground.
If you use leveling blocks and chocks to level your rig, be sure to properly position your leveling blocks under your tires. This is especially important if your rig is equipped with radial tires. Always assure that your leveling blocks are large enough to support the full load of your RV and that the load placed on each tire is evenly distributed on the block. Dual wheels? Make sure the load is evenly distributed on blocks fully supporting BOTH tires. Blocks should be wider than the tread and longer than the tire’s footprint (where the tire meets the ground). If you use a block that’s too small or if you position it unevenly under the tire, you can overstress the steel cables in the sidewall of radial tires, which could lead to premature fatigue of the sidewall. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! What a DRAG: Have you ever pulled out of your driveway or into a shopping center and heard that dreadful screeching, scraping, thumping sound as your RV “bottoms out” on the concrete? The greater the overhang (distance behind the rear wheels) your rig has, the lower an incline it takes for the RV to drag bottom. Luckily, there’s a super simple, inexpensive solution for this problem – a pair of swivel dolly wheels (“skid wheels”), attached to the underside of your rig. Skid wheels can be easily added to any trailer or motorhome, take about 30 minutes to install, and they’re better for the asphalt, your rig, and your nerves. Many RV supply houses offer packaged pairs of swivel skid wheels that can be bolted or welded on, and can even be bolted to an existing hitch bar. They’re even available online at retailers like Amazon.
Quick Lists: One of the first things we quickly learn as RVers is how to make the most of our existing space. Thinking ahead, and packing items which can serve dual purposes whenever possible (RV cleaners, multi-tools, etc.) saves a lot of headaches later. Pack the basics in an easily accessible utility bay. Don’t forget a heavy duty extension cord, your drinking water hose, green cleanup hose and a spray attachment, as well as a good quality spare tire, lug wrench, and jack. If you travel in a fifth wheel or tagalong trailer, take along a hitch lock to secure your rig while you’re away sightseeing. Don’t forget a good glass cleaner and a roll of paper towels for regularly cleaning the windshield and headlights. A few more simple necessities include pens and paper, batteries, a fire extinguisher, flashlight, cell phone or smart phone and its charger, a printed road atlas (because smart phone mapping systems are dependent on batteries that can and do fail), a first aid kit, tape, matches, pliers, a screwdriver, WD-40 or equivalent, holding tank chemicals, and bathroom tissue. A small telescoping shower rod is ideal for drying clothes; place it temporarily in the shower when needed to dry delicate washables, bathing suits, and clothes worn in rainy conditions. Make the most of the space your rig has to offer, and do your best not to overpack. You’ll be surprised by how few things you actually need if you make the most of each item, carefully selecting tools and accessories that can serve “double duty.” Happy trails; enjoy the scenery – and don’t forget your camera!

This year Arizona is a popular place for snowbirds to retreat in the wintertime. It is no surprise that many come to the city that holds the Guinness World Record as the “sunniest place in the world,” Yuma, Arizona! There are plenty of Encore RV Resorts in Yuma, Arizona to adopt as your winter home including Mesa Verde, Cactus Gardens, and Foothill Village Resorts! 90% of daylight hours in Yuma are filled with sunshine and the city is rich with southwestern and pioneer history. It’s also the meeting point of the Sonoran Desert and Colorado River giving it a unique geographical landscape. Imperial National Wildlife Refuge The Imperial National Wildlife Refuge is a favorite destination for visitors and residents of Yuma. There are over 14,000 acres of designated wilderness within the refuge. It’s located a 2hour drive from Yuma, AZ. The Refuge is a fantastic place for birding enthusiasts – there have been over 275 species sighted on the refuge according to the Yuma Audubon Society. If you’re in the mood for an easy, 1.3 mile hike, make your way to the Painted Desert Trail within the Refuge. The trail was named for the multi-colored mounds formed 20-30 million years ago by erupting volcanoes. The vibrant scene along The Painted Desert Trail offers picturesque views of the Sonoran Desert and the Colorado River. Other activities encouraged at the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge include canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and hunting. Just make sure to check the state fishing and hunting regulations and licensing before heading out.
Arizona Market Place The Arizona Market Place has been a place for small businesses to grow and for visitors to explore since 2001 and it is a favorite among local Yuma residents. This market features over 1000 shaded selling spaces located on 32 acres. Parking is free and there is often live entertainment along with a variety of vendors offering everything from antiques to food, to one-dollar gadgets, silk clothing, furniture and more! The Arizona Market Place is open Thursdays to Sundays, 9am-4pm, October through April. Make sure to visit arizonamkt.com for more information. I KNEW I WAS A
TrailBlazer
â–˛ Carnvale Family with their #100DaysofCamping towel at Chestnut Lake, NJ
This month, TrailBlazer would like to introduce you to Heather Carnevale, a member who feels blessed to be a camping family. The Carnevales love to camp to get away from their day to day lives, and make friends with fellow campers wherever they go.
TB: How long have you been camping and RVing? Who introduced you to it? Tell us how it all began! HC: We bought our first camper, which was a 2009 Forest River Hybrid, in June of 2014. But, after a few months we enjoyed camping so much that just a few short months later in March, we upgraded to a 2015 Dutchman Aspen Trail Travel Trailer. I never really camped prior to buying our hybrid last year. I grew up going to Tioga County on weekends where my parents owned a cabin. My husband Mike camped as a child with his family 16
and we were tired of leaving our dogs in a kennel when we would go on vacation. We have a nine-year-old Chocolate Lab named Hershey, and a five-yearold Rhodesian Ridgeback named Akua. We wanted to make new memories as a family with our eight-year-old daughter, Ava. We haven’t looked back in the past year and have made friends at each campground we have gone to. TB: How did you first hear about Thousand Trails? HC: When we bought our Hybrid in 2014, our dealership, RV Value Mart, offered with our
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015 TRAILBLAZER
purchase a year membership to Thousand Trails. In the fall of 2014, a representative came around while we were at the Hershey campground and told us the about all the benefits of the membership. TB: What is one of your fondest camping memories? How about one of your fondest TT memories? HC: When growing up, my husband went camping all over the east coast with his family. He remembers times when he would go fishing and catch the snapping turtles; growing through the pop-up years and then finally
moving into a 1978 Concord motor home that always was breaking down. There are so many memories that you get being together as a family as you camp over the years. So far in our two seasons as a member in the Thousand Trails community we have met some great people and have made some great memories that will last for years to come. There are a few nights that we thought would never end, just hanging out through the night. Also, Ava absolutely loves camping! Last year when we first started she couldn’t really swim. After the end of last season she was doing great, learned on her own. Now this year she is a fish! You can’t get her out of the pool. She loves sitting by the fire roasting hot dogs and making s’mores. She has made some friends, as well, and when we go back and forth between Hershey and PA Dutch Country, she gets to play and catch up with them. It’s awesome when they see her and call out after her to play.
TB: Any funny camping or RVing stories? HC: We have a few different times with our friends that we hung out through the entire night. Talk about funny is when the next day you realize what just happened, but then realize it was with good friends you had just met, all while making great memories. We have another night where we sat fireside with some of our friends and it ended up being an ‘80s and ‘90s karaoke night until almost midnight. TB: What type of camper are you/what equipment do you use? What do you prefer and why? (ex: fifth wheel, RV, tent, cabins, etc.) HC: We currently have a 2015 Dutchmen Aspen Trail 2760BHS travel trailer. But in the next few years my Mike would prefer to upgrade to a fifth wheel. After we towed our 27-foot travel trailer to Chestnut Lake in New Jersey, which I think he drove with white knuckles the majority of the way (since it was our first long road
trip 3 1/2 hours), we got to the campground and he said “That’s it we are going home with a fifth wheel.” He did call dealerships in the area but I won out and we drove home with our Aspen Trail. He just didn’t like the sway you felt towing the travel trailer and heard you don’t feel it as much with a fifth wheel. TB: Where have you gone that you wouldn’t have otherwise, if it hadn’t been for your Thousand Trails membership? HC: So far we have really stayed in our area on the east coast but really are looking to take advantage of our membership. We are looking to go up north to Massachusetts. We are excited that the possibilities are really limitless depending on our membership. I would say Hershey is our favorite. We loved the campground and fellow campers. The atmosphere there is positive and relaxed and we made friends and lasting friendships there. It is hard to choose a favorite but I would say it’s also our home campground. TB: What is your favorite part about the outdoor lifestyle? HC: Being able to take our whole family with us and to just be able to be together and get away. It feels like we are truly getting away from our everyday tasks. TB: Can you finish this sentence? I knew I was a TrailBlazer when...
▲ Our dog Hershey going for a walk at Hershey RV & Camping Resort, PA
▲ Mike at Lake & Shore, NJ
HC: I knew I was a Trailblazer when I realized our growing friendships all revolved around where and when we were camping. Being a Trailblazer is also knowing that our family memories are revolving around each time we camp together.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015 TRAILBLAZER
Wherever you’re camping under the stars, head to Mississippi, Alabama, or Florida to marvel at this trio of high-tech NASA Visitor Centers. Each opens a new door of discovery for space explorers of all ages.
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015 TRAILBLAZER
29
INFINITY SCIENCE CENTER Pearlington, Mississippi
A striking glass building rising up alongside Mississippi’s I-10 in Bay, St. Louis looks as if it belongs to the future – and it does. INFINITY Science Center, NASA’s newest Visitor Center, launches guests on a mindexpanding journey to learn more about space, earth and ocean exploration. The INFINITY adventure begins before you even enter the futuristic 72,000-square-foot facility with an outdoor exhibit featuring a pair of massive rocket engines of the type that powered Saturn Rockets on various NASA missions. Dwarfing human onlookers, the colossal F-1 engine is the most impressive. A cluster of five of these engines was used to launch the Saturn V that carried men to the moon during the Apollo program. Just inside the entrance, in the Science Express area, the Great Nations Dare to Explore exhibit depicts the progress of exploration from the earliest days of seafaring to modern day space travel. Visitors are able to make hands on choices as they travel forward in time from early Egypt to future Mars colonies. One of the center’s most eyecatching exhibits is Science on a Sphere, an aptly-named computer system that uses four projectors to show dynamic, revolving views of Earth’s and other planets’ atmosphere, geography and more. Of particular interest here, in view of the melting polar icecaps and erratic weather patterns currently plaguing the planet, is a thought – provoking module that models the effects of global warming through the end of this century. 30
In the Space Gallery area of INFINITY visitors learn how NASA has led the way in empowering America’s space ambitions. A riveting exhibit, 50 Years of Space Exploration, reviews NASA programs going back to the launch of the first American in space in 1961, including Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle programs. It looks into the future too with a cut-away display of the Orion Crew Capsule that will carry humans into deep space in the future. Visitors also can tour a full-sized International Space Station module and view a video tour guided by former NASA astronaut Scott Altman to learn about the everyday life of astronauts as they circle nearly 250 miles above the earth. The Space Gallery also displays a variety of space-related artifacts such as chunks of moon rock and the space suit worn by Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise, a native of nearby Biloxi. Astronaut Haise is assigned to the center and is often on hand to interact with visitors. Admission to INFINITY Science Center ($10 adults; $8 seniors and military, and $6 children) includes a bus tour of neighboring Stennis Space Center for a behind-the-scenes look at the nation’s largest rocket engine test facility. INFINITY is open Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

U.S. SPACE & ROCKET CENTER HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA
Huntsville, Alabama (aka “Rocket City”) is the birthplace of America’s space program. For visitors, the focal point of it all is the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC), a Smithsonian Affiliate and the official Visitor Center for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. USSRC boasts one of the largest collections of rockets and space memorabilia in the world. Visitors learn about the dramatic “Space Race” – NASA’s critical program to catch up with the Soviets and put a man on the moon – and development of the space shuttle program and the International Space Station.

Touring the mammoth Saturn V Hall at USSRC’s Davidson Center for Space Exploration is a mesmerizing experience. Guests get a rare up-close view of an authentic Saturn V rocket – one of only three in the world, and a National Historic Landmark. The 363-foot-long behemoth is suspended from the building’s structure and views of it from any angle are astonishing – particularly from the rear where Saturn’s first stage houses five giant F-1 engines that provide the initial thrust to launch the 6.5-million-pound rocket. The hall also houses the original Mercury and Gemini capsule trainers, a lunar lander, and the Apollo 16 command module. Most guests round out a visit to USSRC by taking in one of the daily features on the 67-foot screen in the center’s full-dome IMAX® Theater, and with a stroll through Rocket Park to survey
what NASA astronaut Jon Glenn describes as “the finest rocket collection in the world.” The display consists of 27 missiles and rockets that tell the story of the development of America’s space program. There’s still more: step into Shuttle Park for a look at a full-scale space shuttle replica. Visitors can extend their Huntsville space adventure (you’d best plan on two days if you want to see it all) by joining a bus tour of Redstone Arsenal, home of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. The tour, conducted daily, takes in the Redstone Test Stand (another National Historic Landmark) where the U.S Army and NASA test-fired some of the country’s first rocket engines, and then visits the bustling International Space Station (ISS) Payload Operations Center. This is NASA’s all-important ISS command post where guests can watch in real time as the payload operations team coordinates all U.S. scientific and commercial experiments onboard the station. General admission to the USSRC ($20 for adults over 13; $15 for children 5 to 12; children under 4 and active military – free) includes Rocket Park, Shuttle Park and all indoor exhibit areas. IMAX® screenings and Marshall Space Flight Center tours are extra. The center is open seven days a week, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Kennedy space center canaveral, florida
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex (KSCVC) is the colossus, the bid daddy, of all space-related visitor centers on the planet. Located on Cape Canaveral, Florida, 45 miles east of Orlando, it affords a surprising degree of access to Kennedy Space Center (KSC), headquarters for NASA’s multibillion-dollar manned space program, and launch site of all U.S. manned space flights since the 1960s. Understand from the start that there’s so much to see and do at KSCVC that you’d need several days to take it all in. Accordingly, it is beyond the scope of this article to describe it in detail. So let’s get down to the basics with an account of what you can do in one day – or the first day of a multi-day visit. A two-hour bus tour, included as part of general admission, will help orient you to the mammoth scale of KSC and the myriad activities underway at the facility. The tour visits the International Space Station Center, LC39 Launch Complex/ Observation Gantry and the Apollo/Saturn V Center, where – like in Huntsville – you can walk beneath a massive Saturn V rocket. It also provides a view of the 525-foot-tall Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) – one of the largest structures in the world -- where the Apollo rockets and space shuttles were assembled. Basic admission includes more than enough to keep you busy for the rest of the day. There are space films at the twin 3D IMAX® theaters; Astronaut Encounter, where you can meet a veteran 34
NASA astronaut in person; the Rocket Garden, planted with a crop of real and replica rockets and space capsules; the History of Space Exploration exhibit, where you can explore the Mission Control Center for America’s first manned rocket launches; Children’s Play Dome, a space-themed play area, and the Astronaut Hall of Fame®, home to the world’s largest collection of personal astronaut memorabilia. Last, but certainly not least, is one of KSCVC’s newest exhibits -- Space Shuttle Atlantis – presenting the most complex machine ever built by mankind. This one-of-a-kind $100 million attraction puts guests nose-tonose with Atlantis, raised 30 feet above the floor and rotated at an angle with its payload doors open, as if orbiting the earth. That’s not all, folks – there are a couple of extended tours of Kennedy Space Center, offering rare behind-the-scenes access to the sprawling complex, and Lunch With An Astronaut, a program that invites guests to enjoy a buffet lunch in the company of a NASA astronaut. These activities require advance reservations and additional admission fees. You may be able to time your visit to witness a rocket launch – check the KSCVC website for launch times/dates. KSCVC opens daily year-round at 9:00 a.m. Closing times vary by season. Daily admission is $50 for adults; $40 for children 3-11, and $46 for seniors (55+) and U.S. military. A much better deal is Multiday Discovery Admission, with a full year of unlimited admissions, priced at $75 for adults and $60 for children 3-11.

Cameran Nelson by Lynn & Cele Seldon
Whether you spend life on the road for pleasure or work, it’s nice to have the comforts of home as you travel the highways and byways. TRAILBLAZER checks in with folks who spend a fair amount of time on the road to see just what makes their home away from home. This month, we chatted with up-andcomer country crooner, Cameran Nelson.

orn and raised in just about every part of Texas, Cameran Nelson has parlayed his love of the Lone Star State into a fusion of country grit and down-home rock n’ roll that is getting huge attention in his home state, and country music stations across the nation. Learning the ropes from his traditional country singersongwriter father, his first paying gig was when he was 13 years old and his father’s bass player didn’t show up for a gig. Cameran knew all the songs, so he jumped up on stage and just started playing. That was 19 years ago and he made $60. Then, after selling merchandise and learning the secrets to entertaining crowds from the late “King of Honky Tonk,” Gary Stewart, Cameran realized this was the career path for him. He applied for a music scholarship as a guitar player at South Plains College and when he performed the song he had written to show off his guitar skills, they ended up falling in love with his voice and offered him a vocal scholarship. After graduation and years of forming and playing in various bands, he found his way to solo stardom with the release of his first album entitled Happy to Beer in 2013, along with nominations for three Texas Music Awards. His highly anticipated sophomore album, Good Thing Going, was released this fall and features two #1 hits, with “Shotgun” and “You Can Still Wear White.”
How long have you been touring? I’ve always had gigs. But I’ve only had this project and been performing as a solo artist for five years or so. That was an interesting time. I had always wanted to start my own band – just be a solo artist. It took a drunk night around a campfire in January to make it happen. A friend of mine was getting married in May and he was asking me what band I had play at my wedding. And I said, I’ll play at your wedding. So it took me five months to find a band and we started learning all these songs that my buddy wanted at his wedding. Two weeks before the wedding, I asked a local bar if we could play a free show to work out some kinks and have a chance to play in front of people before we showed up at the wedding. It ended up that there was a songwriter and producer in the audience and they heard us and came up to us after the show and decided they wanted to write with me and produce my music and it went from there. So we ended up writing the Happy to Beer album and that was 2013.
We caught up with Cameran as he was heading back to his home in Blanco after playing in a charity golf tournament. 38

Your new album, “Good Thing Going,” was just released. Tell us about it. What’s your favorite single? My favorite single, the one that is well-written and cool sounding, is a song called “Rubbing It In.” But the one I have the most fun with is a song that I wrote for Kevin Fowler as a duet. When I showed him the song, called “Beer Lease,” he decided he wanted to record it as a duet on my album instead of on his own. You’re performing at The Music Fest at Steamboat in January with more than 50 bands and artists. How fun is that? It’s an amazing time! There is usually a stage set up at Slopeside Bar & Grill and I hope to play there. Tell us about your bus. I got a 35’ 2003 MCI F3500 this past Memorial Day. What’s your favorite thing about staying on your RV versus a hotel room? The generator going while you are sleeping. I sleep like a baby. A little bit of noise, the bunk is super dark, and the mattress is really comfortable. I sleep pretty hard in there. Not only that, I’m usually the one that wakes up early. If we need to start heading down the road in the morning
and I’m up at 6 or 7am, I can just jump in the driver’s seat and start moving us in the right direction and everyone else can sleep. What are your favorite things onboard? The X-box. I like the fact that we have a shower on the bus – we don’t need a hotel at all. And the storage compartment underneath is big enough to fit all of our golf clubs, bowling balls, and fun stuff for down time. We love to go bowling and we play quite a bit of golf. Do you listen to music on the road? We do. We listen to everything. Our musical tastes are all over the board. George Straight to Whitney Houston to Slipknot. We also do quite a bit of practicing on the bus since there is not much time for full-band rehearsing when we’re on the road. We’ll work up new parts to the show and new songs just sitting on the couch.
What else do you do when you are on road? Watch a lot of movies and eat bad. What’s the favorite junk food on board? Hot & Spicy Cheez-its. And there are always bags of pistachios lying around. We eat a lot of pistachios. Do you cook onboard? No. We don’t have a stove. We have a microwave. So ramen makes an appearance sometimes. We usually go out to eat when we’re on the road. What’s your favorite meal to enjoy onboard or on the road? I’m a big fan of steakhouses. Also, wing stops – buffalo wings and that kind of stuff. What are a few favorite destinations? A lot of them are in Texas. I like going to the river. Whether it’s the Comal, the Frio, or the Guadalupe – I have a lot of fun with that kind of stuff. Pretty much anywhere in Texas.
Highways or scenic routes? Usually, now with the bus, we take the highways. We used to take the scenic routes when we were in my pickup. Do you ever go camping as a family vacation with your wife and three children? We haven’t used the bus for that kind of stuff yet, but we’ve talked about it. We’ve talked about going to Big Bend or taking it down to the beach. We’ve done some close-to-home set up out on the back of the ranch in the tent outside. They love it. They love the campfire and the marshmallows. Is there anything about your bus that we didn’t ask? Well – we named our bus. Her name is Stormy. We went to Louisiana to pick it up just when the heavy rains and flooding that hit Texas in May really hit our town and the surrounding counties. So when we got to the place, they asked us if we wanted to name the bus, and I said that Stormy seemed appropriate.

SOUTH FLORIDA South Florida, for our purposes, is the area that encompasses the beach towns from Bradenton down south to Marco Island on the gulf side, the hot spots of the Atlantic beach scenes from Palm Beach south to the Keys and of course, the Everglades which lies between both coasts. For an unparalleled beach experience, try Bean Point on Anna Maria Island, just outside Bradenton, a beautiful white sand beach perfect for capturing an awesome sunset on the Gulf. For a blast from the past, visit Manatee Village Historical Park in Bradenton to see what life was like in the settlement and learn the history of the area. Have you ever experienced a “green flash?” What is a green flash, you ask? It occurs mostly at sunset, although it can occur at sunrise, when the sun suddenly, albeit briefly, changes color. Try your luck at Lowdermilk Beach in Naples, where several sunset revelers have reported experiencing the phenomenon.

After the sunset, stroll the quaint town of Naples and visit Freddo Gelateria for some tasty artisan gelato. Yum! Everglades City is the “Gateway to the 10,000 Islands.” Start off with a visit to the Museum of the Everglades to learn the history of the area. And of course, experience the Everglades any way you prefer, including ecotours, airboat rides, kayak and paddling trips as well as hiking and off-road tours. For a great dining experience on the water, try Camellia Street Grill. Wintering in Florida has long been popular with those from the North, including the likes of Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. To get a feel for how these gentlemen spent the winter, visit the Edison & Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers. Historic gardens and historical buildings, and the Edison Botanic Research Lab and

On the east coast, head over to Delray Beach the weekend of November 7-8 for the Delray Beach Wine and Seafood Festival. Wine, beer, music, Florida coastal designed art and clothing and of course, seafood is on tap for this weekend of fun. For another unique experience while in Del Ray, visit the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. Participate in a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony while visiting this exquisite location. Fort Lauderdale is another area known for its beaches but there’s also Bonnet House Museum and Gardens, a historic estate offering tours of the grounds and gardens. The estate will feature the Orchid, Garden and Gourmet Food Festival on December 5-6. For more information visit www.bonnethouse.org. Another fun thing to do in Ft. Lauderdale is stroll Las Olas Boulevard, the main thoroughfare and shopping district that offers dining options, shops, two museum and art galleries. Welcome the holiday season and attend the 53rd Annual Christmas on Las Olas event on Tuesday, December 1. While the beach itself is what draws people to Miami, there is a lot more to this hot spot than just sand and water. There’s the Art Deco architecture that lines Ocean Drive, Little Havana with its specialty food shops and Zoo Miami, home to 2000 wild animals

When you first think of Holiday Favorite, you probably think of traditional Christmas. I decided that to take a world view of December holidays! Come with me to taste the world thru a few different recipes. Try tastes from around the world – an Indian traditional Diwali dish, a Christmas morning Holiday Wreath, and spicy and colorful Sweet Potato Latke for Hanukkah. I hope you enjoy a small taste of the world from your dutch ovens and skillets. Enjoy!
Sweet + Spicy Potato Latkes SERVES 8 (10in skillet)
Ingredients • 4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and grated • 1 medium yellow onion grated • 1⁄ 3 cup all-purpose flour • ¼ tsp. cumin • 4 large eggs, lightly beaten • Canola oil • Sour cream (optional) • Chives (optional)
Directions 1. Toss potatoes and onion together in large bowl. Mix in flour, salt and pepper, cumin if using, and add eggs. 2. Heat about ¼ inch oil in a large, heavy skillet over medium heat or a loose bed of coals. Place about ¼ cup of the mixture per latke in skillet, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Flatten slightly with back of spatula. Turn once, when underside is deep golden brown (about 4-5 minutes on first side and 3-4 minutes on second side.) Place cooked latkes on warm plate and repeat process with remaining batter. Drain for a few minutes on paper towels before serving. 3. If serving dairy meal, garnish with a dollop of sour cream and chives.

Carrot Halwa SERVES 4 | about 3 hours (10in dutch oven)
Ingredients
• 1 pound carrots, peeled • 2 tbsp. ghee or neutral cooking oil • 8 green cardamom pods, seed only, crushed (or a tsp of ground cardamom) • 3 cups whole milk
• 3 ⁄ 4 cup sugar • ¼ cup raisins • Pinch saffron threads • ¼ cup unsalted pistachio chopped nuts
Directions

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2015 TRAILBLAZER
1. Grate the carrots coarsely using a cheese grater or whiz them up in a food processor. Heat the ghee or oil in a 4 quart dutch oven over a bed of coals. Add the crushed cardamom seeds and stir for about 30 sec., until they are fragrant. Add the grated carrots to the pan and fry for 3 min.
2. Add the milk and bring it up to the boil. Boil, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes. Then reduce the heat to low by removing most of the coals and simmer the halwa, uncovered, for about 1 hour. Stir every so often to stop the milk forming a film or scorching on the bottom. The milk should have reduced by over a third by the end of the hour. 3. Light up fresh coals. 4. Add the sugar, raisins, and saffron to the pan and stir. Use a ring of coals and a coal to make medium heat and cook, stirring frequently, for until the halwa is thick and glossy, 15 to 20 minutes. 5. You can serve the halwa warm or cold. If serving warm, scoop into bowl, sprinkle pistachios over top and serve. If serving cold, press the halwa mixture into small ramekins. When ready to serve, overturn on to plates, sprinkle over the pistachios and serve.
Holiday Breakfast Wreath with Cranberry-Almond Filling SERVES 12 32 coals when ready to cook at 350 degrees (12in dutch oven)
Ingredients Homemade Bread • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsps) active dry yeast • ¼ cup warm water (about 110°F) • ½ cup warm milk (about 110°F) • 3 tablespoons sugar • 4 tablespoons (½ stick) butter, softened to room temperature • 1½ teaspoons salt • 1 teaspoon cardamom powder • 2 large eggs • 2 teaspoons grated lemon peel • 3½ cups unbleached all-purpose flour Cranberry-Almond Filling • ¾ cup dried cranberries or cherries, soaked in ½ cup brandy or other liqueur • 6 tablespoon butter, softened to room temperature • 1⁄ 3 cup unbleached all-purpose flour • ¾ cup finely chopped blanched almonds • 3 tablespoons sugar • 1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon peel • 1 teaspoon almond extract
Sugar Glaze • 1 cup powdered sugar • 2 tablespoons water • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 4 tablespoons (½ stick) butter, softened to room temperature • ¼ teaspoon cardamom powder
Directions 1. Prepare the dough In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in the water and let it foam up for a minute or two. Blend in the milk, sugar, butter, salt, cardamom, eggs and lemon peel. Stir in two cups of the flour, one cup at a time. Beat for 2 minutes. Add remaining flour 1/2 cup at a time until you have a soft, workable dough — you might not need to use all the flour. Dump the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead until smooth, 5 to 10 minutes. Add more flour if needed to prevent sticking. Place in a lightly oiled mixing bowl large enough to accommodate dough when doubled in size. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1 1/2 hours. 2. Prepare the cranberry-almond filling Drain the dried fruit from the liqueur and reserve the liqueur for another use. In a small bowl, combine the drained fruit with remaining filling ingredients. Cover and refrigerate.
3. Shape the dough When dough has doubled in size, punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured board, kneading just enough to release any air bubbles. Roll the dough into a 9x30-inch rectangle. Crumble the filling over the dough to within 1 inch of the edges. Starting along a long side, tightly roll up the dough, pinching edge against loaf to seal. Move the long roll to a piece of parchment large enough to go part way up the sides of the oven. In other words, not just a disc of parchment. With a sharp knife, cut roll in half lengthwise. Carefully turn the halves so the cut sides are facing up, and then loosely twist the halves around each other, keeping cut sides up. Left over right, sort of tight but not loose. Shape into a wreath, pinching the ends together to seal. Let it rise, uncovered, in a warm place until puffy, about 45 minutes. Light up enough coals to make a 350°F. That would be 1 ring and 5-6 coals on lid and 9-10 under in a loose ring. Bake the wreath until lightly browned, about 25 minutes. While the wreath is baking, stir together the ingredients for the glaze and set aside. When wreath is done, transfer to a cooling rack by picking up the sides of the parchment and then sliding the parchment out from underneath. Cool for a few minutes then drizzle the glaze over the warm wreath. Serve with extra butter if you’re feeling decadent.

Hi Bill, I upgraded to a Bill, I have water leak coming out the bottom of my shower on to the floor. Looks to be clear not soapy. Where should I start, at the head or maybe at the faucet? Any words of wisdom on this project? Thanks, Rich Fandrey P.S. Remember I have the Carriage Cari-lite and we met in Florence/ South Jetty TT Park over a year ago. I purchased the Cheap Heat furnace add-on you suggested and wow! It works great!!

I have a 2008 Fourwinds Chateau 30 FT Class C. Thor has taken over 4Winds and says they have incomplete documentation so I don’t know what type of slide I have. My unit has two slides on opposite sides of the cabin – they are about 18 inches wide. The mechanism appears to be simple gear and track pull style. There is a channel on each side and it appears to slide on two bands of smooth metal. Here is my issue, the slides seems to have a subtle tilt about half way through the slide action. This adjusts the slide to come over the floor. Now, one side does not tilt so the gear disengages and stops moving the slide. Going out, two people can push it about 6-10 inches, and then it engages. Going in, a push gets it going but the push is needed the 50

Rich, Thanks for the feedback on the Cheap Heat. It is an outstanding product and I would not be without it! You did not say whether the water leak is continuous or only when you take a shower. If it were all the time, I would look at the fittings at the back of the shower diverter and be sure the diverter is sealed to the wall preventing water from running under it. If the problem is only when you’re taking a shower, it could be leaking somewhere
around the enclosure or the door. Let me know if you made any progress or if you need anymore help. I’m glad you love the Cheap Heat! We wouldn’t be without it!

There should be a manual way to operate the slide out, which is typically down by the motor and gearbox assembly. However, the same problem will most likely occur because you will be simply turning the mechanism manually. Normally, a socket and ratchet is all that is needed to move the slide out in or out. As far is the problem with a slide out now, it could be one of several things and will have to be investigated. Find and inspect the roller assemblies the slide rails move in and out on. Perhaps a bracket has come loose or a bearing has failed. Check the brackets where the rail attaches to the slide room. Make sure they have not shifted. You will need to inspect every part to determine the problem. Parts should still be available online.
I need to either fix this or find a work around to do it manually. Any thoughts? Thanks, Paul Redvers
A
Paul, I believe that your slide out mechanism was made by Power Gear, however I’m not positive as Fourwinds used two different mechanisms around the point of time your coach was made. It is typical for a slide out to tilt as they come in- the top edge should engage the side of the RV before the bottom edge. The disengagement you’re hearing could be the torque limiter gear in the gearbox.

GOT A QUESTION FOR BILL? SEND AN EMAIL TO AskRVBill@equitylifestyle.com
Q
Hi Bill, I am a new member to Thousand Trails with a new travel trailer living in southern California. What is your best choice for a RV cover that’s in the sun most of the time? I have read some reviews and they don’t seem to hold up to UV rays. Looking forward to your reply. Thank you, Mike Rogers
A
Mike, Welcome to this amazing lifestyle! I’ve had a lot of experience with RV covers in the past 40 years. The best cover for an RV that will last for 20 years plus would be made of fabric called Sunbrella – it is same material they use on boat covers. They are not cheap but well worth it in the long run. Calmark Cover Company 800-8387236 offers a full 6-year warranty. Covercraft and PPL Motorhomes also offer custom RV covers. ADCO makes a good alternative,
Hi Bill. I have a 2009 Mercury Mariner I use as my 4 wheels down tow car. My first transmission melted in Aug of 2012. Since I had 400 miles left on my factory warranty there was no charge but only 1 year or 400 miles warranty on new transmission. Elko Ford had to modify the replacement transmission, including a different condenser assembly, Indicator assembly – oil level, and tube assembly. Basically, a new transmission, dipstick and different amount of transmission fluid.
READER TIP
less expensive than Sunbrella. The Tyvek series is an all weather cover with a white top fabric, 3-year warranty and is water-resistant. Make sure you eliminate all sharp corners and sharp objects that come into contact with the cover may snag or tear the new cover. Be well and see you on the road!
Q
Hello Bill,
I have an 11 year old Holiday Rambler Alumascape 5th Wheel. The other day, when replacing two of the tires, I noticed that the leaf springs were somewhat rusty & dry. This got me to thinking about spraying some sort of penetrating lubrication oil on them and the attaching points. Is this a good idea or would this attract road dirt and grime... although my rig is mostly run on paved roads. If so, what type of lubrication oil would you recommend?
The dealer said it was a common problem and gave me a copy of TSB 11-7-15 publication date July 12, 2011, subject *6F35 TRANSMISSIONRECREATIONAL TOWING-WITH ALL 4 WHEELS ON THE GROUND EXPANDED GUIDELINES TO PREVENT TRANSMISSION DAMAGE. The bulletin applies to 2010-2012 Ford Fusion and 2009-2012 Escape and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan and 2009-2011 Mariner. For all of us that purchased Ford Motor Company (FMC) Vehicles listed in TSB 11-7-15 with a 6F35 transmission, no matter if you
I enjoy your Q & A columns in the Trailblazer magazine and always look forward to this section. Thanks, Rod Whitfield
A
Thanks for the inquiry and the compliment. Leaf springs should never be oiled with any type of lubricant. Friction is what makes the leaf springs perform properly. If the springs are excessively rusty, I recommend replacing them. It is not uncommon for leaf springs to break causing major problems. I would be willing to bet the bushings throughout your system are worn out as well. Factory bushings only last for 5 -7 thousand miles. When you replace them, do so with Never-Fail Bushings as they have a lifetime guarantee and can be ordered by any parts store.
purchased it new or used, it is NOT TOW ABLE 4 wheels down unless the modifications are done. In a recent Trailblazer Q&A you mentioned a ford escape that lost a transmission while being towed. The Elko Nevada and Redding California Crown Motors Ford dealers had multiple cases of melted transmissions and I would bet Ford Dealers all over the USA have had multiple cases. If you publish an article and get a lot of feedback maybe we could get Fords attention. Thank you for this information. I am sure this will help our readers.

paws ROAD ON THE
Traveling and Camping with Companion Animals by Jenn Gehr
Q + A
My family and our two cats are moving from Texas to Oregon. We plan to be on the road for several days with our two vehicles. In the backseat cab of our 4-door truck, we have a large crate set up for both of the cats to reside in comfortably and safely. There are cat beds, a small litter box, and food and water are available to them at all times. The crate is large enough for the cats to move around in and stretch. I can’t imagine giving the cats drugs each day to keep them quiet but thought I’d ask you for any other suggestions that might make this already stressful transition a little bit easier for us all. On The Road Again, Steve & Nita Swope, ZZ and Bellini JENN Swope Family, This certainly sounds like a major life transition! I love that you thought to keep all the comforts of home in a secure area with your cats at all times. I, too, think it’s ideal to find a natural solution to aid in peaceful travel. There are several products on the market that are a homeopathic solution to be applied as a wipe or spray to the cats paw pads. I’d imagine this type of application would be easier than forcing a pill down their throats! Some natural calming solutions also come in a liquid
dropper form for oral supplementation. Look for Rescue Remedy by Bach or Travel Sickness Spray by HomeoAnimal. Also include a sheet or blanket to partially cover the cat cage to help keep them from direct sun exposure and to give them an extra sense of security if they seem fearful of large passing trucks or worries in general. I hope you have a safe journey and a wonderful new life in beautiful Oregon! Jenn, I know you are an avid camper, hiker and outdoor enthusiast. With so many choices on the market, have you found a favorite water pack or water bottle for multi-use purposes? My dogs love to drink from the water bottle but then I am reluctant to do the same. Also, what is your favorite dog treat to hike with? I am paranoid about anything made in China or full of unwanted fillers or additives. Thanks, Julie and Lori Scott JENN Julie and Lori, Yes! Yes! Yes! I have your covered! As a matter of fact, I have recently discovered a water bottle that is a camper/ hiker/dog owner/all around must have! The Aquabot is made in the USA by Lunatec and has a built in, mist, 25-foot jet stream or shower mode and fits 63mm-mouth bottles of CamelBak and Nalgene. You can choose the pressure and pulse mode of the spray to accommodate your needs. Everything from a refreshing mist, a strong jet spray that could help wash your dishes to a shower for flushing out a wound, this is a must have bottle for any on-the-go individual. REI
carries the Aquabot and that means a worry free and pba free purchase. Retails at $24.00. For more info see www.lunatecgear. com You’re going to love it! My must have treat for hiking is also a complete feed Primal Freeze-Dried Pet Food. My girls favor the pork, beef and turkey & sardine formulas best. I carry 4-10 cubes in a plastic baggie and I’m good to go as they are weightless. My dogs are 20 pounds each and usually only eat 1-2 nuggets each mid-hike. I carry extra food for them and myself just in case there were an unforeseen mishap I would at least have extra food and water for us all. I carry a collapsible silicone bowl that I clip on my pack so I can rehydrate the dog food with my Aquabot water bottle. The Primal freeze dried nuggets can be fed dry but be sure to offer your pet water for a rinse down as moisture is an essential part of their diet. The Primal Freeze Dried Food is my dogs’ daily diet so I like to bring Papa Psuka strips as a crunchy pocket snack. Primal Beef Liver Munchies or Buffalo Liver Snaps are my other must have treat for training and love. No matter what, be sure you choose antibiotic, preservative, steroid and hormone free foods that are sourced in the USA and preferably organic- this dedication to quality is why I completely trust Primal Pet Foods so much. Our pets are family and depend on us to choose quality for them to ensure optimal health. Thanks for a great question and I hope you enjoy these outstanding people and pet products alike!
