What is APA style? APA format is the official style of the American Psychological Association(APA) and it was developed by social and behavioral scientists to standardize scientific writing
Why we use it?
Allows reader to cross-reference your sources easily Gives you credibility as a writer
General structure
Title page Abstract introduction The main body References Footnotes Graphics Appendices
Title page Your title page should contain a running head, title, author name and school affiliation.
Running Head (top left header) TITLE NAME
Page margins at least 1 inch (2,54 cm) all on sides
SCHOOL OR ORGANIZATION FUNDED BY‌
Running head: smaller version of the title of your paper, and it runs throughout your paper at the top of each top. Short title all caps.
Abstract Summary that describes the most important points of your research and papers. According to APA format, the abstract immediately follows your title page and it should be no more than 150 to 250 words.
Main body structure
Use a serif typeface, such as Times New Roman, for the text of your manuscript.
Use a sans serif typeface, such as Arial, for figure labels. Double-space the entire manuscript. Double-space between lines of body text and titles, headings, and block quotations. Double-space the reference list and figure
captions. Indent the first line of every paragraph one-half inch. Align the text to the left-hand margin, leaving a ”ragged” right margin. Number the pages consecutively starting with the title page. After the reference page comes the table page, and after table page comes the figure page. Each one in separate pages.
NOTE: citations are necessary parts of APA style as they show the readers where the ideas are or research came from.
Reference page In order to avoid plagiarism, the reference section of your paper will include a list of all individuals who ideas, theories, or findings have directly influenced your work, even if you are paraphrasing or describing someone else’s idea that you used in your paper. The structure for your reference page is:
Center title ‘’references” at the top of the page Use handing indent (flush left the first line of the entire and indent subsequent lines one-half inch right) Alphabetic entries by the authors surname
Apa style: two main concerns Reference page
A list of every source that you make reference to in your essay Provides the information necessary for a reader to locate and retrieve any sources cited in your essay
Parenthetical citations
Use it quoting any words that are not your own When summarizing facts and ideas from a source
In text-citation When you paraphrase, you will need to use punctuation (period), it should be placed after the reference citation: (Espinoza, 2016).
When you cite a direct citation less than 40 words, the punctuation should be placed after the reference citation: (Espinoza, 2016, p.52).
You should write the exact page.
When you cite more than 40 words, the quotation should be intended 5’’ and no quotation marks. Citing sources with more than one author: If you use source with the same name, then you include the last name. (Jackson, 2016)
If there are two authors of the source, you include their last names. (Smith & Jackson, 2016)
If there are more than three authors, you can cite all the authors or can cite the first author. (Smith et al. 2016)
Citing sources without author: When the work does not have author, it is listed as Anonymous. (Anonymous, 2016)
Citing authors with the same last name. When this occurs, you should write the author’s first initial. M. Jackson (2016) and S. Jackson (2015)
Citing multiple articles with the same author within the same year. Several published documents by Skinner (2010a, 2010b, 2010c, and 2010d)
