Joy vs. Suffering
Relinquish expectations and find your joy! The motivation for all that we do comes down to wanting only one thing: JOY! All of our choices and actions are either moving toward joy or away from suffering. It’s hard to feel joy when you’re suffering and hard to suffer when you feel joy. One evening Joeel (my co-conspirator) and I were having a discussion, and we both made a similar comment about needing to let go of “suffering.” Later in the conversation we realized we were coming from totally opposite perspectives. Joeel’s perspective was “I need to let go of the belief that suffering is an expected part of life” and my perspective was that I needed to let go of the belief that “I shouldn’t have to suffer.” This paradox led me to the realization that suffering is caused by two extremes—low expectations (i.e, life requires suffering) and high expectations (i.e., I shouldn’t have to suffer).
The key to navigating the journey toward joy is to understand the role that expectations can play in your experiences of both joy and suffering. 4
Low Expectations: Most of us hear a lot about the law of attraction, which teaches us that we attract what we focus on, and that we are in control of what happens in our lives. From that perspective, if we have things in our lives that we do not want, or don’t have what we do want, it is because we have “attracted” them. We may say we want a positive outcome, however we often have a hidden expectation that a negative outcome is more likely to come. We may be pessimistic, always expecting the worst; we may constantly complain about what we don’t like in life; or we may have limiting beliefs that tell us that what we want is not possible. It seems that most people are on one extreme of the spectrum—the one of low standards and expectations.
Most people suffer because they hey expect very little from life—and they get it. Many modern thinkers and spiritual teachers would suggest these people should change their thoughts, stop complaining, and affirm that they can and WILL have what they really want. Raise your standards! Swing the pendulum to the other side! This may leave them hopeful, empowered, and optimistic as they begin visualizing and affirming with fervor, but sometimes this can backfire; sometimes it works the other way around. High Expectations: Sometimes, suffering is caused by disappointment—when life doesn’t live up to our high expectations. This can be confusing because the prescription recommended for those with less-than-satisfactory lives is to raise the bar. The problem comes when we set high expectations but we do not truly believe in them. We end up on the other extreme of the spectrum—the side where we expect perfection. In my teens I was a perfectionist. I was hard on myself for everything, including wanting perfect grades in school. I was fed up when the world didn’t meet my expectations. I was a devout optimist, always expecting the best. I found, though, that my perfectionism set me up for disappointment. For example: When I was looking forward to a vacation, I would visualize it and imagine all of the things I was excited about. The problem was that it never turned out the way I had expected. I ended up being disappointed, which caused suffering. I remember looking back at a vacation I had gone on and realizing that if I had not tried to anticipate it in advance, creating expectations that were never fulfilled, I would have been pleasantly surprised by it all.
It was only my unfulfilled anticipation that caused unpleasant feelings.
So, what did I do? I decided to lower my expectations. I stopped daydreaming. I stopped anticipating the future. I stopped expecting anything from others. I didn’t go so far as to expect the worst or visualize everything going poorly, I just tried on “letting go” and “having no expectations” for size. Unfortunately, over time I did become more and more pessimistic. I told myself that my “unrealistic” dreams were not possible, and so I stopped believing in them. I lowered the bar, and my life suffered as a result. I know I’m not alone on this. Why do you think so many people think negatively and have low expectations? Some of them were probably programmed that way, ingesting limiting beliefs and doubt offered up by their family and friends during childhood. Others, however, likely started out more like me—with high hopes—only to have them dashed. Then, they turned the other way and lowered their expectations. The pendulum swung to the other side. Lowering expectations is not the answer, but neither is fantasizing the future or obsessing over perfection. If Life gives you what you ask for, think about, and believe, it certainly makes sense to stay away from the end of the spectrum where pessimism, complaining, doubt, and low expectations lay. But it doesn’t make sense to put all of your effort into trying to visualize your perfect life or affirm to yourself constantly that you can have everything you want without limitations, especially if you do not, yourself, actually believe it. If one extreme doesn’t work, why would we believe the other would?
Why not just let go of expectations all together? The pendulum doesn’t only rest on one extreme or the other; it swings through all of the middle ground between the two. Stop the pendulum somewhere in the middle; this is where joy is found and where suffering ends. The middle path is where we are all seeking to be—in the zone of no expectations. When I made the switch from perfectionism and tried on “letting go” for size, I think I was on to something. Ever since, I have kept the practice of going into all vacations without any expectations. I plan the vacation but avoid over-scheduling. I intend and expect to enjoy my time, relax, and explore. Aside from that, I let go, I don’t get too specific. The results are fabulous! My vacations feel like adventures because everything is a pleasant surprise. Because I have no specific expectations I do not feel like I’m missing out on anything. I also find that I am better able to go with the flow in the event that something unexpected happens.
There is peace in having no expectations, in letting go. The key to this peace is not replacing high expectations with low ones or the other way around—it’s having no expectations at all. The reward for letting go is finding your joy—the joy that was previously out of reach due to the disappointment of perfectionism or the hopelessness of expecting the worst. Of course it’s important to dream your dreams, affirm yourself, and visualize all that your heart longs for, but the most important part is to let it go. Let it go. Happiness
Measure of
Happiness
By Linda Commito
Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful. -Albert Schweitzer If you knew that your happiness could positively affect not only your friends and those around you, but their friends … and even friends of friends … would you not want to be contagious for a good cause? In December 2008, the findings of a happiness study conducted by Harvard Medical School’s Professor Christakis, and James Fowler of the University of California in San Diego, stated that when individuals are happy it triggers a chain reaction that can affect others up to three degrees, and last for up to a year. Their study of 5,000 individuals over 20 years revealed that:
“Happiness spreads through social networks like an emotional contagion.” Fowler commented: “Having $5,000 extra increased a person’s chances of being happy by about 2 percent,” but he went on to say that someone that you don’t even know [ie. a friend of a friend] “could have a greater influence [on your happiness] than hundreds of dollars in your pocket.” In the Himalayan country of Bhutan, with its predominantly Buddhist culture, the focus of its public policies is the GNH—Gross National Happiness quotient. King Jigme Singye Wangchuk, who coined the term in 1972, believed “Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product.” It was later supported by his son, who took over the throne in 2006. The Fifth King of Bhutan states: “Our most important goal is the peace and happiness of our people.” Gail Gordon, a friend of mine who recently visited Bhutan, says, “I felt as though I were experiencing a true life Camelot.” She found the residents, most of them living off the land, to be friendly and happy. She would often see signs on cars that read, “I love my king.” Gail says, “There is no crime in Bhutan, where citizens have a respect for nature, the cycle of life, and their fellow man.” According to Wikepedia, this Buddhist culture considers the key components of happiness to be: “physical, mental and spiritual health, time-balance, community and cultural vitality, education, living standards, good governance and ecological vitality.”
6
Surveys of a segment of the population are done twice yearly to ensure that these values are afforded Bhutan’s 600,000 citizens. In contrast, in the United States, the pursuit of happiness is stated as one of our inalienable rights in the Declaration of Independence, yet I can’t remember the last time that it was an expressed consideration in developing our government policies. We might ask: How can we as individuals, and as a nation, incorporate happiness as a key measure of our wealth and welfare? Perhaps when elected officials can put aside their individual differences and political agendas to support the wellbeing of its citizens, the pursuit of happiness will feel like a more attainable goal. I spoke about this concept with David Rubin, a successful Sarasota businessman, who brings that philosophy to his company, where he talks to his employees, asking if they are taking the time to pursue what brings them joy, whether it’s tennis, painting, or being with their family… and then he suggests that it be part of their job description. His reasoning is simple:
“If we don’t take the time to do the things we love and be with the people we love, what are we living for?” David also shares, “Whenever I play golf, I consider the winner of the game to be the one who has the most fun.”
“Using happiness as our yardstick, how are we enjoying and winning at the game of life?” Excerpt from the book Love Is the New Currency by Linda Commito, available at Café Palm, Sarasota1Books, Circle Books and Amazon.com. Inspiration
The Clock Ticks By Frannie Hoffman
Hummingbird Come to me and spread your joy I am the nectar you crave I will bloom and become more Because of the love you share. It is always an honor for me to be brought to the bedside of the dying. Each beautiful soul prepared me so I could be present with my mother as she transitioned from this world one and a half years ago. I cannot imagine how fearful I might have been had I not been with these great teachers who showed me how to embrace the dying process. Months ago my father had brief moments on the other side. He would stop breathing for quite a while as we would stand near him wondering if this was it. Would he return or now choose to leave? He came back saying he saw mom, and she told him that she forgave him and God forgives him too. Another time, he said, with great clarity that after he dies he would come back as a hummingbird. He was excited with this knowingness and asked each of his children to get a hibiscus tree and plant it near a window because, as soon as he could, he would visit us. Now the doctor has announced to my father that there is nothing that can be done for him and he has given Dad permission to let go and die. As I lay awake in the wee hours of the night, my mind shows me a life review with my dad. I see him when I was young as he turns his head and smiles at me. Years stream by as I watch this slide show of moments that I have forgotten. They rise up in me without using my thinking mind. The story unfolds from deep within me as I hold myself tenderly and feel the deep love. How great it is to remember this love and the sweet moments with Dad, like when I would jump up on his lap when he was sitting in his favorite lounge chair. I can still feel him holding me. He was young and strong. It is always amazing to me that the body does not know that this moment of feeling was decades ago. I let the feeling bring me to my heart and connect deeply to this love that will never die.
As the clock ticks and the days slip by, I realize that we are all moving closer to our own transition. I cannot imagine a life without knowing about my spirit. This incredible life, with all of its ups and downs, has given me the opportunity of inner growth which has helped me to become the person I am meant to be. Each day I live knowing that every moment can unfold divinely. I have learned to trust instead of trying to control (unsuccessfully) out of fear. Buddhist nun and
teacher Pema Chodron continues to remind us to turn inward to the fear; to sit with it and let the feeling of unworthiness be there. Can we hold ourselves tender-heartedly and just be okay with this feeling?
Sitting beside the friends who welcomed me into their last stages of life in a body, I was shown the gift of living in the now. Filling the moment with useless chatter had no place there. These moments were holy, and the silence between us spoke louder and clearer than any words or thoughts could possibly convey. I would listen inward and hear the importance of the moment. I can say to you right now that I am not afraid of death. I have been shown the other side, or rooms on the other side, of the veil. As I move more deeply inside my own connection to myself, I’m moved beyond the confines of my human body. This feeling is so freeing. Here I feel that we are so much more than these bodies, that we are not alone. Here is where we can be fully present within our own hearts as we join with the heart of all creation. The dying process is not always about leaving the human body. This transition can occur when moving out of relationships, jobs, or old beliefs that do not serve us. With my father’s dying process, I feel my attachments to him and wonder who I will be when he leaves. Sometimes I wonder if that’s when we really grow up when we become orphans. Upon emerging from my grief over my mother’s passing, I noticed a shift; a new sense
7
of self. How will I feel after Dad goes? As I sit at the bedside in the last days of my father’s life, a hummingbird appears, drinking the sweet water from the bird feeder that stands bedside the hibiscus plant outside the window. My brother said to me that Dad knows who he will be after he dies, and maybe I am the flower he craves. This transformational experience can be as simple as moving inward to allow more of your spiritual self to be consciously embraced as who you truly are. Then the lies that once held you prisoner begin to lose their hold. Old aspects of self that are chained to past pain and dysfunctional behavior can die away. The cycle of life and death bring endless opportunities for us to be more fully connected and more fully here. These moments unfold all around us in this worldly life and can focus our awareness on the spiritual life that is always a breath away. As I look at my father, his eyes wide open yet he is in a deep sleep. I keep speaking to him because on some level I know he hears me. I thank him for this beautiful life that I have because of him. How grateful I am that my father always received my gifts and allowed me to be myself. Even though he doubted his own relationship with God, he never held me back. I look out of the window as the hummingbird continues its mission to bring joy. It is quite a show outside Dads window as a blue jay and chipmunk eat out of the same bowl and a swan gracefully glides close by. Dad opens his eyes and sees me.
With a weak voice he says, We had a wonderful life together, didn’t we? Now the tears are uncontrollable as I rest my face upon his chest. The hummingbird is right there as my father and I taste the sweet succulent nectar of love. I feel this timeless place where I commune with all that participates in these precious moments that will never be forgotten. Looking into his eyes I whisper, “Go now to the light my sweet Father and know that your children are just fine.” Now days later, as I walk down the country road in Abadiania, Brazil just hours after my father’s passing, I look up at the hibiscus trees that line up on the road beside me. There he is, the biggest and most beautiful hummingbird showing its beauty as it hops from one branch to another. My body vibrates as if I have plugged myself into a light socket and the love pours through me. Hello my dad, thank you for coming. In deep gratitude I cry joyous tears. Perspective
A Better View of the Sky By Alan Cohen
An experience as devastating as the earthquake and tsunami in Japan causes us all to wonder why and how such an event can occur. The loss of human life and damage to property poses many sobering questions to a person of compassion and conscience. It touches us at the deepest level and forces us to confront the experience of suffering.
Yet there are lessons, insights, and healings that come from even the darkest night of the soul. Disasters move us to revisit and reorder our priorities, and to transcend old limits and patterns through kindness and caring. If we have become distracted from the values that make life work, upsets can serve as a valuable course correction. When the Japanese earthquake hit, English teacher Anne Thomas was living in Sendai at the heart of the devastated region. A few days after the disaster I received a forwarded email from one of Anne’s friends, sharing her gripping and inspiring view of the difficulties. In the aftermath people had to come together. They shared water, food, and a kerosene heater. “We sleep lined up in one room, eat by candlelight, and share stories. It is warm, friendly, and beautiful.” Those with the good fortune of running water posted signs so others could come and fill up their buckets.
“People keep saying, ‘This is how it used to be in the old days when everyone helped one another.’” Without water, people could not bathe or shower. Yet Anne saw a blessing even in this. “We feel grubby, but there are more important concerns than that for us now. I love this peeling away of non-essentials. Living fully on the level of instinct, of intuition, of caring, of what is needed for survival, not just of me, but of the entire group.” And most poetically,
“The heavens at night are scattered with stars. I usually can see about two, but now the whole sky is filled.” Anne’s conclusion: “An enormous Cosmic evolutionary step is occurring all over the world . . . I can feel my heart open-
10
ing very wide. . . I feel part of something happening much larger than myself. This wave of birthing worldwide is hard, and yet magnificent.” While many people are focusing on the tragedy and devastation associated with the disaster, this woman found majesty in the way people were coming together to help, and the rewarding return to essentials. Everything is what we make of it, and some good comes of every bad. The outpouring of love and support to the people of Japan has been phenomenal. So many people have donated money and prayer, and many have traveled to the affected zone to lend a hand. Giving love is healing to those who extend it, and for the Japanese, generally a proud and independent people, receiving love is equally healing. A Japanese friend told me, “I heard about a team of Israeli doctors who came and donated their services. I had no idea anyone in Israel cared about us and would make such an effort. Maybe kindness is still alive in the world.” A Zen master said,
“Now that my house has burned down, I have a much better view of the sky.” Sometimes when something we thought we needed is taken away, the space reveals riches we were missing because we were distracted by our assumed source of security. In one of my favorite movies, Starman, an extraterrestrial comes to earth for a short but intense adventure. When he has to return to his planet, someone asks him, “What did you learn about human beings?” He answers, “When things are at their worst, you are at your best.”
Things don’t always have to get to the worst before we bring forth our best. We can offer kindness, compassion, clarity, and appreciation for the simple things without needing a cosmic whack to get our attention. If we appreciate the night sky without an earthquake, we may not need a disaster to remind us of the star-borne gifts it offers. Metaphysically, an earthquake represents that the ground of our being is shaking. Simple observation reveals that nearly every human institution we have depended on is shaking — economics, education, government, religion, marriage, and
how we relate to the environment, to name a few. The Japanese earthquake is not restricted to that foreign island; it represents a worldwide shakeup affecting us all. The event is less important than how we react to it. We can choose fear or love, with no real options in between. You can go into panic and insecurity, or like Anne Thomas, you can relax into security of a higher order than the one we have been trained to depend on. Shakeup can lead to breakup or it can lead to wakeup.
Let’s use the experience as a call to remember how we were born to live. Devastation, personally or geographically, is never an end. It is always a means to a greater end. For everything taken away, something greater comes to replace it. As Japan rebuilds to become even stronger, may we all find new stars in the sky.

Choosing
Happiness A couple of days ago I was enjoying a beautiful day in nature exploring with my daughter and Natalie (my other half). We walked through the trails, caught bugs (my daughter loves bugs), canoed, and stared in amazement at the trees—but most importantly we laughed and enjoyed the simplicity of life. As adults we feel that there is a lot we can give or teach to our children. However, we often forget that they are often our greatest teachers.
One of the greatest lessons I learn from my daughter is how to find joy in the now and appreciate the simple things in life. What was easy when we were children (finding joy in life) often becomes challenging in the adult world of busy schedules and never-ending responsibilities. As an adult, happiness becomes a choice, and we can learn this lesson of how to live in joy from our children and then apply it to our relationships and our lives. We can choose to create moments of joy with our partners and acknowledge the simple pleasures. Just as it’s our responsibility to make time for all of our responsibilities, we must also make time to create that space for joy. Below are simple tips to create happiness in your relationship. Make Your Partner a Priority: Everyone wants to feel that they are valued and important to someone else. • Make eye contact in conversations to let her know that you are fully engaged in her world. • Tell him how important he is to you. • Show gratitude and appreciation for the small things that she does for you. Remember that everyone has choices and if she does something for you it’s because she made the choice to make you a priority. Don’t take
12
anything for granted. Keep physical contact with each other. Physical contact not only makes you feel more connected with your partner, it actually has been shown in research that it releases the same chemicals that you produce when you feel happy as well as the chemicals that take away pain and help your body to heal. This can be as simple as holding hands when you walk or giving him or her a big squeeze as you are passing by.
Make the Time for Joy: If you can make time for other things such as work, children, hobbies, friends, or Facebook you can make time for the person that you share life with. • Do a joy audit. Ask yourself how much time you are spending doing things together that you enjoy on a weekly basis. Increase the time! • Create mini dates. Set up your schedule so that it includes time together. Be realistic with the amount of time you set aside and be consistent. Both of you need to participate in deciding how and when to spend time together so that you are both committed to it. It doesn’t have to be long or complicated, even a walk in the park or sitting looking at the night sky can be very joyful and intimate. Remember, watching or going to a movie does not allow a space for conversation. Plan activities that create the space for true connection. • Enjoy the mundane. How enjoyable are you making the time together when you are doing are things that just have to get done? Activities that are not necessarily fun, such as cleaning, cooking, or running errands, can be turned into enjoyable shared time. If you have to do it anyway, why not make the best out of it? The time will pass by and chores will get done whether you decide to make it fun or complain the whole time. You decide what type of experiences you want to create. • Create something to look forward to. Life may feel repetitive or dull at times, and an experience that you can both anticipate, plan, and be excited about together will bring spice to your life and make you closer as a couple. It can be a simple plan, such as a night out or a day of relaxation. • Learn how to let go. Does the house truly have to be perfect? What is truly the priority—the superficial stuff or your relationship? You could lose everything but the person who you share life with will be by your side if you do. Therefore, let go of what isn’t important and give that person, and joy, priority. • Do random acts of kindness. Don’t wait for your partner to take the lead—set the example. Doing something nice for your partner will not only make that person feel good, it will make you feel good too. Leave her a note in the bathroom in the morning telling her that you love her, bring coffee to bed for him, open her door, send him an email or text to let him know that you are thinking about him. Research shows that these small gestures have a bigger impact on a couple’s overall happiness than bigger, less frequent gestures.
•
Reminisce! Take time to reminisce about the joy-filled moments that you have experienced together. Remembering those moments will make you feel connected and create a desire to create more moments to cherish.
Grow Together: Ask you partner his or her dreams and desires. Children change as they develop, and we also change. What our dreams were two years ago may be very different that what they are today. Check in with your partner and daydream about life. Go one step forward and create individual and shared visions of the life you intend on creating together. • Take 10 minutes a day. Make a commitment to spend at minimum of 10 minutes each day discussing your day. It is important to feel that you are part of each other’s life. Talk about the good stuff, especially the good stuff that you did together! • Truly listen. Don’t just try to get your point of view across, listen to find something that you can agree with. The more you do this, the more you may find that you want similar things but may express them in different ways. Your partner may be offering you a new way to look at life. • Support your partner in his or her journey. Remember that the purpose of your relationship is to help each other grow and develop, not to set limitations. • Learn something new together. One of our natural needs is to feel like we are growing; therefore, take the time to learn something new together—such as taking a workshop or a class. Even if one or both of you have resistance to it, I guarantee it will help you feel more connected and give you a fun shared moment to talk about.
Remember that happiness is a decision, both on an individual basis and in a relationship. Are you creating what you want in your relationship? Are you choosing happiness? If you have children in your life, observe them as they revel in life’s joys—you could learn a few things. Take a walk with your partner through the woods. Stare in amazement at the trees. Catch bugs—or maybe just notice them. Laugh as you remember that happiness is found within the simplest of moments shared. Join me July 29-31 in Sarasota for the Finding Your Joy Retreat! Out Your ego! ego FORCES Spirit ALLOWS
Within a few strokes, I was having a hard time breathing. I switched to breast stroke. Mike met me with a smile. “Catch your breath and try it again,” he said. “If you do two strokes more than last time, I’ll be happy.” After turning around in the deep end, I made it halfway back. “Just a few more strokes this time,” he encouraged after I finished with breast stroke again. While I caught my breath, I asked if he had any suggestions. He gave me a few pointers. Then he said,
by Staci Backauskas
“And relax.”
. . . and wake up to who you really are
When I registered for a Master’s Swim class, ego chimed in with all the reasons I shouldn’t have. I ignored them as best I could. But I still felt terrified the first night. I was certain the pool would be filled with über athletes. What if I couldn’t do everything they could? You’re going to look like a fool! ego hissed. I arrived to find just two other people. The coach instructed them to swim 500 yards to warm up. Then he put me in my own lane and told me to do a 200-yard warm up. That’s eight lengths in a standard pool. A few days earlier, I was ecstatic when I’d done six consecutive laps. Now he wanted me to do eight... to warm up. I did one length of freestyle and completed seven of backstroke. After I caught my breath, I saw the coach smiling. “I’m going to push you,” Mike said. “I want you to do 50 yards of freestyle.” Two lengths of the pool. I panicked. I was going to drown. I made it to the other end and turned around to head back.

On the way to the deep end I repeated, “Relax,” over and over in my head, and made it the whole way easily. I began to see the tension I created in my body from worrying about whether or not I’d do the whole 50 yards. Wondering where I’d lose my breath was the reason I lost my breath.

Finding Joy
Finding Joy in All Things…
to see it in that light. This is not to say that we will not hurt, get frustrated, or we have to be excited about everything that life brings to us. It’s okay to be upset, to question why things may happen, but ultimately it is important to acknowledge the joy of experiencing it all.
By Ricky Roberts III
Joy is not just found in a particular experience, a career, obtaining a goal, or material possession. Joy is found in the air you breathe, the birds chirping outside of your window, the laughter of a child, helping someone in need, the ability to walk, to hear, to see, to laugh, to cry, etc. Above all, joy is found in the essence of life itself and the people you share it with along the way.
We will experience things in life that challenge us. There will be things that make us question the meaning or purpose of life at all. Life will not always go as we plan it or hope that it will. There will be things that happen that make no sense to us at the time that they are taking place. In any event, no matter what we experience, it is a gift to be here.
Often times we get so caught up in what happiness looks like or what we need in order to have it, that we forget to acknowledge the joy of living in and of itself. Every moment that we are is a blessing. Regardless of the challenges or adversities that life may bring, we have the opportunity to find joy in every moment that we are if we choose
I invite you to find joy in every part of your life, not just the ones that you associate with happiness.
May you find the joy in who you are and all that this life has to offer you along the way, always…

•••••••••••••••••• Affirmative Thinking for a
BIGGER Mind In last month’s article I stated that it takes a bigger mind to create a bigger life, and we explored the idea that one way to do that is to practice expansive thinking instead of restrictive thinking. Another way to encourage a bigger mind and a bigger life is by making a practice of thinking in an AFFIMATIVE way rather than a negative way. Beyond keeping a positive attitude (which is also a good thing) affirmative thinking allows us to take charge of our mindset before and after things happen. Positive thinking tends to get brushed off as trivial, or maybe too simple to deal with “real” problems. Somebody may try it once, and if they don’t see immediate results, they give up on it. Going back to negative or unconscious thinking assures that things will continue as usual, so a one-shot stab at positive thinking accomplishes nothing. When we realize our thoughts are creative and are the true cause of everything that happens to us in life, maybe it’s worth a little extra effort to consciously affirm good for ourselves. People who see the good in things are rarely thrown by events that come their way. They just focus on the good and move on, leaving the negative behind. Left behind, it has no power over them. Try this: Practice sustained affirmative thinking: Get into the habit of making your minute-to-minute thoughts light. If your minute-to-minute thoughts are judging, condemning, worrying, that’s a lot of mental noise that can be traded in for something useful. This needs some awareness, but it’s not like lifting 300 pounds. It’s just thought. Who else but you can choose your thoughts? Make a conscious affirmative choice: Before you go into a meeting—before you have a difficult conversation—before you confront that person behind the counter—take a deep breath and affirm that Divine Love or Divine Right Action take place in this situation. Let your actions be guided by these ideas throughout the situation and see what happens. Instant affirmative reaction: When something happens
16
Haven’t you ever noticed, in retrospect, that something that looked so awful to begin with turned out to be a blessing? Three flat tires on a deserted road in the New Mexico desert kept me from an embarrassing situation. The flat tires didn’t look like a blessing at the time, but later we learned that the workshop we planned to do would have been completely inappropriate to the audience at the conference just a few miles up the road. Instant affirmative thinking puts your reactions to things under your control. Serious tragedies aside, when you get really good at this, you’ll find there actually is a positive side when you look for it. And after a while, it gets to be fun! Focus on the beauty around you. Try being grateful for a flower, a sunrise, or a wonderful smell in the air. Do a random act of kindness. Put a quarter in somebody’s expired meter. Let somebody get in line ahead of you. It’s easy to become hardened to the world when you look for fault everywhere—easy to miss the beautiful sky when you’re looking at the ground. While these suggestions may not be original, in and of themselves, they are valid. The more you learn to apply them, the better your life becomes. This isn’t rocket science, but is more than just common sense. Common sense is so common. This is extraordinary thinking.
Healthy Living
Living Your Craving-Free Life By Rena Greenburg Are your cravings controlling your life? Does your life experience live up to the level of health, happiness, and peacefulness you seek?
Perhaps in some areas of your life you already feel deep contentment, but there may be another aspect of your life that is driven by craving. Despite any of life’s challenges, you can connect to the peace that exists at your core and maintain freedom from cravings. When you get in touch with your innate goodness and equanimity, life’s difficulties no longer hinder your ability to have inner peace and the faith that something better is emerging. People often feel powerless over the tendency to indulge in the same unhealthy behaviors over and over. Your subconscious mind runs your life, and it is set on auto-pilot. Rather than feeling at the mercy of your subconscious, you can take great refuge in the understanding that you have the capability to reprogram your own mind. Is it easy? Not necessarily. In fact, it is one of the great challenges of being alive, and yet the possibilities for growth and freedom from cravings are enormous once you face what is driving you. The subconscious mind is programmed by the thoughts in the conscious mind. These thoughts then lead to your actions. Repetitive thoughts and behaviors become lodged in the subconscious where they become automatic. All of our habits—whether positive or negative—have been installed into our subconscious as a direct result of previous thoughts and behaviors. These patterns of action that we often feel compelled to take seem so strong because of the momentum of the past. If all of our undesirable behaviors—whether reaching for a cigarette, alcoholic beverage or bag of
chips—come from negative thoughts about ourselves and our lives, is the only hope for true health and happiness to change our thinking? Yes! However, that is easier said than done. If I told you not to think of a white elephant, what immediately comes to mind? If you try not to think about how angry you feel towards your neighbor who takes advantage of you or your boss who never gives you credit for your contributions, how successful are you likely to be? You probably already realize that negative attitudes promote undesirable experiences in your life. Despite that understanding, do you find yourself spinning in a familiar loop of unproductive or judgmental thinking? It’s difficult not to come to the conclusion that something outside ourselves “should not be happening,” or that one person is robbing us of our happiness. This is because our conscious mind is being informed by our pre-existing wounding. Each of us comes into the world with a wound—it’s part of our human condition. As we go through life, difficult experiences such as being teased by other children or not getting our Mother’s attention, press upon our wounds and imbed these hurt places deeper into our psyche. Each time we allow our wound to dictate our thinking, we are increasing our identification with it. We then begin to crave substances such as food, alcohol, or drugs to relieve this pain. At the same time, each of us also enters the world with an incredible jewel of love, more powerful than any wounding, deep in the center of our hearts. If you put your hand on the center of your chest, bow your head, and breathe deeply into this place, you can make contact with an incredible, indescribable peacefulness. All the higher intelligence that is available through the wisdom of your heart and soul can be experienced when you spend time with your essence here. When you allow your deep heart to inform your thinking, your wound begins to heal, and your perceptions become guided by the highest intelligence available to humanity. This intelligence is the inspired wisdom of all creation, and we can tap into it and experience the unity of all of life behind our individual selves. This is the place that physicist Albert Einstein referred to as “the unified field.” Its wisdom seeks to re-inform our perceptions at any given time, but we must make the choice to listen to it.
When we listen to the voice of the heart, our conscious thinking changes. The conscious mind can be informed by the wound or by the open, loving heart that is our essential nature of goodness. When the wound informs our thoughts, the wounding is reinforced. We may then feel compelled to block ourselves from experiencing this dark force by over-eating, over-sleeping, or over-working. However, when we make the conscious choice to allow our heart to re-inform us, new possibilities open. We no longer need to be controlled by fear. We begin to feel safer whether engaging in a conversation with our spouse, parent, boss, client, or child. The more we can stay attuned to our essential nature of peace, safety, and love—the more this new way of relating becomes a habit. Our subconscious, computer-like mind, which is responsible for all of our habitual behavior, now perceives life through the lens of the deep heart or the voice of love as opposed to the voice of pain. When you look at your life experience through the eye of your heart, you no longer have to force yourself to “be forgiving or grateful.” Instead, you begin to spontaneously feel more compassionate towards yourself and others.
17
The truth is we must make the choice over and over in each moment. You can easily determine what voice you are listening to by tuning into your body. If you feel constricted or uncomfortable, then most likely you are overly identifying with the voice of pain. With this awareness, make the decision to drop your story and begin to attune to and pay attention to the voice of your heart. Breathe deeply into the center of your chest. Ask within for a new, clearer way of perceiving what’s true. Notice the sense of relaxation, expansion and spaciousness that automatically follows your connection to your heart and soul. Make a decision to have your next action follow the voice of your heart. Every time you do this, you strengthen your connection with your heart, and diminish your identification with your wound, and with the collective wound of humanity. Your choice to reprogram your automatic thoughts through the lens of your deep heart has a direct impact on your emotional state and your behaviors and paves the way for you to live a life free of craving.

I did not embody this lesson without a price to pay. The lesson I learned is shared with you in hope to bless your life with limitless peace, joy, love, and prosperity. “The Seven Steps to Creating My Intentions” is the title of my lesson learned, and I would not have learned these seven steps without going into mediation. During this quiet time I was asked to create a motivational conference. The fact that I received such a request startled me for a moment. In my confusion I heard myself saying,
bryonic stages of development, I have realized this journey of trust, letting go, and fully being in the now is what our Creator intended for us all. I want to share with you my journey.
“How can I do this when I only have $79.00 in my checking account?”
I wanted all the answers, and they did not come fast enough for me. Since I had not done this before I had to ask for help.
Spirit confirmed I live in an unlimited universe and everything will be provided for me; all I had to do was trust. Trusting fully by allowing the transformation of personal and spiritual growth to occur is difficult. From the em-
4. Asking for help is the fourth step in creating your intentions. I asked for the right people to be shown to me for my highest and the conference’s highest good, and they were.
1. The first thing I had to do was to be clear with my intentions. 2. Second, to make a commitment and stick to it. I knew in order to serve what was being asked of me I needed to first commit to myself as well as the conference. 3. The next step was to write out the intent in order to keep me focused. At the same time, I knew I had to affirm out loud my commitment of my intention. I had not done a conference before and did not know where to turn. Therefore I asked for “the how” from my angels and guides.
I had to be open to receive.
5. Next, the fifth element was revealed to me, which is the plan of action. When plans began coming together, I realized I then needed to let go. 6. In the sixth step of letting go, I realized by getting out of the way Creator/ Spirit was able to do the intended work. The real challenge came when I had to sign a contract and provide a deposit I did not have to give. Before I signed the contract and paid the deposit I learned the seventh step. 7. The seventh step is having faith and stepping through the fire to get to the other side. The price I paid was not the monetary value of creating and organizing a motivational conference. The price I paid in this lesson was about letting go and fully trusting. The journey to success in creating my intentions is not about the income or possessions obtained, but about the person each of us can become. I challenge you to become the very best you, and experience what Mother/ father God will manifest for you.

Living Joy The opposite is actually true. No matter which way we approach things, we cannot be controlled, and we cannot change or transform another person, place, or thing. The key is in the self, the most innermost part of the soul—not the ego or the human brain; rather, it is in the heart, which is the spiritual brain.
Acting from the heart and not the head creates magic, miracles, and joyful living.
By Eileen Wood
According to dictionary.com LIFE has several definitions, all depending on how you look at it. LIFE as a Noun: The animate existence or period of animate existence of an individual: to risk one’s life; a short life and a merry one. LIFE as an Adjective: —for or lasting a lifetime; lifelong: a life membership in a club; life imprisonment. —of or pertaining to animate existence: the life force; life functions. —working from nature or using a living model: a life drawing; a life class. Idioms: —as large as life, actually; indeed: There he stood, as large as life. Also, as big as life, come to life. —to recover consciousness, to become animated and vigorous: The evening passed, but somehow the party never came to life. —to appear lifelike: The characters of the novel came to life on the screen. —for dear life, with desperate effort, energy, or speed: We ran for dear life, with the dogs at our heels. Also, for one’s life. Let’s look at each definition and how it applies to joyful living. When we understand how our individual LIFE is being reflected outwardly, we can learn to adjust, change, or adapt as needed in order to live in a state of joy and happiness.
It seems that as humans we believe that if we could just change the other person, change jobs, move to another city, etc., then our unhappiness can transform into joy and happiness. 24
The first definition for LIFE is “the animate existence or period of animate existence of an individual: to risk one’s life; a short life and a merry one.” We are born, live, and then die. So, for our animate existence we are but a blink in the physical when compared to the larger scope of our journeys. With this in mind, it is a short life and one that can be defined as merry. Since life is reflected by mass consciousness and follows trends and patterns, it is crucial to comprehend the consequences of joyful living vs. not being in a place of joy. Interestingly, this definition references animate existence in relation to risking one’s life. Whoa a minute, in the same sentence there is risk and there is merry. How can these two be together? It seems that as we grow from birth to death we have many experiences that can be risky, causing a detour from the merry side of life. Does this mean that if we find ourselves unhappy that we cannot find our way back to joyful living? I don’t believe so. Apparently, living a merry life is the key to keeping ourselves in an overall state of joy, one that we can maintain no matter what others around us are experiencing. We define our own existence, whether we create it through our own thinking or allow ourselves to be influenced by others’ beliefs and perceptions of the world. Joyful living is up to us as individuals, and by definition it is supposed to be a merry ride through animate existence, including all of our trials and tribulations, and all of life’s risks. The second definition is “for or lasting a lifetime; lifelong: a life membership in a club; life imprisonment.” I find it very interesting how we use a work as an adjective to create polar opposite meanings. It seems to be the yin/yang of the balance of our existence. From a metaphysical perspective these aspects infer that life is a membership, a privilege—not something to take for granted. If you were to participate in an activity that was a once-in-a-lifetime event or you saved up for the opportunity, how would you approach that experience? We are here for a relatively short period of time, so why not focus on the joy it can bring us, just as a special event/activity we have been looking forward to attending or doing. Why not look forward to every day of life with the expectation of joyful living? Imagine the shifts and transformations that would occur in life—see the beauty, the magic, the uniqueness in daily experiences. As if each day is a new day, a new birth, a new beginning. Yesterday has passed and now there is a new opportunity to live joyfully. So far these two definitions have risk/imprisonment and merry/membership. It all depends on how you look at it!!! The third definition is “of or pertaining to animate
Living Joy existence: the life force; life functions.” I love the mention of life force because that is what LIFE is all about. LIFE is defined by our life force energy, or chi. Consider if your own life force energy is strong or weak. It would seem that the stronger it is the more likely you will live a joyful life. They go hand in hand.
Which way does your LIFE flow? Does it travel easily with the current or is it attempting to swim upstream? The fourth definition is “working from nature or using a living model: a life drawing; a life class.” Ah, LIFE is a class. I wonder how many reading this have realized that life is school and with each transformation we achieve we move up in our grade level in the school of LIFE. We have lost touch with nature and our natural state of being. In order to get back to joyful living or improve in the joy you currently have, perhaps you can identify your natural self, communicate with nature, and bring together the universal laws with the physical laws.
Study, learn, grow, expand, and know that all things are connected and that LIFE is but a string in the web of the universe.
It is comprised of layers, dimensions, levels, and intricate weaving of all things together. Finally, if you look at the idioms, they all infer that we are not alone, but we are part of a greater whole that is larger than life, of a greater consciousness, part of a story with effort, energy, and speed. Perhaps you can meditate or contemplate these definitions and see that joyful living comes from within and is in your own individual space. It is up to YOU whether your LIFE is joyful and happy. May you find that space within your being that is in alignment with the universe and its ability to transform you into joyful living in mind, body, and spirit.

The Secret
of Positive Thinking By Christina Captain
Is it really a secret? The power of positive thinking that is. Will looking through rosecolored glasses truly give us the winning life we so fervently desire?
Is it really adequate to just think good thoughts? I once attempted to answer these questions by asking an eight-year-old girl, who promptly answered me with a shoulder shrug and “I don’t know.” Maybe that’s the real answer: We should all stop worrying about positive thinking and just be positive about something, anything. Imagine if we could all just look at life again through the filter of our eight-year-old child. How different would the world be? How incredibly amazing might it be just to take the time to create something that wasn’t on TV or a computer? How exhilarating would it be to wonder with imagination instead of your PSP 3 or Wii? How would it feel to question alleged reality with possibility? My premise in regard to positive thinking is that we all try too hard. Being positive in everyday life should be easy, serendipitous and, most of all, fun. It shouldn’t be work to maintain a positive outlook. Some are skeptical in regard to belief in positive thinking, specifically positive thinking as it relates to health and wellbeing. If we explore the words health and wellbeing we find that the definition of health is not just the absence of sickness but the presence of wellbeing. Then we must examine the word wellbeing. Wellbeing is the state of being well, fine, in a good way, healthy, sound, and thriving. Hmmm, doesn’t that make your wheels turn? If health is a state of wellbeing and wellbeing is being in a healthy, good way, can’t we deduct that one would most likely have to be in a positive frame of mind in order to have health and wellbeing? Well, it makes sense to me. But then I have day after day of experiences with patients who are either carrying around a positive outlook or a negative one. It never fails to amaze me that whichever outlook a specific individual carries that person is successful in proving his or her beliefs every single day. For example, take John, the 40-something divorcee who beliefs strongly that life is unfair and the world is out to cheat him. Every time I see him he has evidence to offer me proving that his premises are indeed correct. On the other side there is Jason, who really sets out to prove that a winning life is possible and that it is effortless. His belief system includes the concepts that life is easy; he is lucky and al-
26
ways has the glass half full mantra somewhere in his subconscious. Both of these men prove they are right everyday; the only difference is what they are right about. So which is it for you? Are you a Jason or a John? What do you prove day in and day out? In Chinese medicine there is a concept of wellbeing comparing people of “weak constitution-strong spirit” to others of “strong constitution-weak spirit.” A person may have a weak constitution based on DNA, but have the spirit of a tiger, fighting for health and wellbeing. According to Chinese medicine, these individuals are more likely to achieve good health than those strong in constitution but weak in spirit. For me strong spirit has all to do with the power of positive thinking and a positive outlook in regard to life in general. Positive thinking is truly a choice. So my friends choose wisely and take the time to create the possibility of positive thinking in your life. Good luck in your journey toward health and wellbeing.

When we left off last month, BOB was playing infinite “Whack-aMole” with our thoughts, bopping each one with a “YES” when it pops up. For more information about the Being of Bliss we call BOB, please visit www.suncoasttransformation.com/online/?P=145
Since all us moles are connected under the table, it’s easy for BOB to move things around so we all get what we ask for, but it’s helpful to give our requests as much emphasis as we can. Thus we speak our word. We hope BOB will hear us above the din as we make more din. Actually, BOB gets the request when we think it, but speaking it aloud helps strengthen it in our minds, and since there’s so much back-and-forth in our thinking, every little bit helps. The problem is sometimes the words we speak often work against us. Here are some of the ways we limit ourselves with our spoken (and sometimes sung) words. How to Avoid Good Health Your life today is the result of your thinking of yesterday, thanks to BOB whacking you with YES! If you want it to be different tomorrow, you need to sow the seeds of thought today. The first step is to watch your language.
When confronted with symptoms or illness, most of us find it hard to declare perfection in the midst of apparent imperfection. Pretty soon, some are convinced this stuff doesn’t work and they’re sick of trying. Notice anything? One of the most common declarations of limitation is in our unconscious use of common phrases. How many times a day do we say we’re sick of this or tired of that, or just plain sick and tired? Do you think repeating it over and over will make you healthy and energetic?
The trick in physical healing is to MAINTAIN your picture of perfect health, regardless of what’s right before your eyes.
That way, the only thing BOB can whack YES! to is that picture of wholeness. It requires constant denial of limited thinking, especially if you have doctors who think they’re BOB. It can be done though. After a mass e-coli infection, Terry McBride was told he’d never walk again, would lose all bladder and bowel control, and be sexually impotent. He had it on the best authority. Well, maybe the second-best, because he and BOB had other ideas. Check out http://www.terrymcbride.net/. Most of us haven’t had Terry’s “opportunity,” and I’m sure glad of that. I’ve found it hard to look at any physical condition and constantly affirm the opposite. How’s your lumbago today? Are your allergies acting up? Are you handling your drinking problem? What about your high cholesterol? Do all these things REALLY belong to you?
Be careful about taking possession of something you don’t want. When you speak of your disease, here comes BOB with the YES! That’s right, it’s yours. As long as you own it, you can’t get rid of it.
We buy into a lot of limiting beliefs when we think about food. There is nothing you can eat that you can’t find somebody to tell you it’s bad for you. There’s plenty of agreement to the proposition if it tastes good, it must be bad for you. Limiting beliefs about health are just that—limiting beliefs that can be overcome. Why should limiting beliefs about food be any different?
If people believe their food choices are healthy, so it will be for them. If they believe “my food choices are not healthy,” they’ve overstepped their bounds. My own belief system extols the gastronomical benefits of a good filet mignon. My taste buds stand up and applaud the savory blend of onions, grease, and whatever else is found only within the buns of White Castle burgers. As an instant recap for those new to the BOB concept, It’s the Infinite “Being of Bliss”—The Intelligence, Love, and Substance that created everything out of Its own Stuff (even the contents of White Castle burgers, but the jury might still be out on that one). We’re all made out of the stuff of BOB, and our minds have a direct connection to the BOB Intelligence over the wires of emotion. The messages of our thought are received, and BOB creates substance and circumstance in accord with them. When your thinking is positive, so is your life. When your head’s a mess, that’s what you create. Visualizing health and energy is helpful. So is affirmation. I could go on in great detail about the benefits of all this, but I’m tired of preaching to you. Oooops!

••••••••••••••••••
Dear Readers, I would like to begin by expressing my gratitude for each and every one of you. I am honored by the love and kindness many of you have extended my way. I am humbled and moved by your faith, not in me, but faith in the love that fully expresses itself through me. I am grateful to Spirit, for giving me this great opportunity to be an instrument of clarity, love, and Divine guidance. My experiences with the Angels, Spirit, and/or Divine are not because I am gifted or special, they are experiences that are intended for all to connect with daily. It is your soul’s intention, and you can call it your life purpose to connect to the awareness that you are much greater than the physical you that you have come to call “you.” Within the wholeness of who you are—physical, emotional, and spiritual—you have Divine intelligence, energy, and a flow that is constantly creating a harmonious melody that plays your life experiences in an attempt to help you actualize the true culmination of who your soul knows it is here to be. I personally would prefer to be standing in front of you sharing these words, so you could see in my eyes the love and clarity that is offered through my spirit. You are exquisite! Your whole being is magnificent! You have been reminded of this truth several times today and I am grateful to have the opportunity to remind you again through these words. As I sit to write, I can’t help but wonder about the fears, struggles, and feelings of being overwhelmed that some of you might be coping with. I understand, and I know that many of us have subscribed to the belief that life is supposed to have its highs and lows. But I wonder what would happen in “life” if we all consciously chose to believe and live as if life is meant to only have constant highs. I’d like to think that our world would be different and a more joyful place. A truth worth clinging to. Today I experienced that which we have come to label as highs and lows.
In one moment I am watching my daughter smile and delight in her laughter (high), and in the next I am watching over her with my hands on her chest as her body tightens and her lips turn blue while her little body responds to seizures (low). 28
A drastic extreme between the perceived highs and lows of life. Could I somehow drastically alter my perception towards her condition and, in turn, change the manifestation of seizures within her body? As I asked the question, I heard a “yes” and a “no,” and I was reminded of a conversation I had with Hay House author Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D. Dr. Lipton is internationally recognized for bridging science and spirit. He performed pioneering studies at Stanford University and is the author of The Biology of Belief. In our conversation about my daughter’s condition, he referred to his studies and how my perception and others’ impressions about my daughter’s disability can be projecting and empowering the ailments that she “suffers” from. I intuitively knew he was right, and I was being reminded in that moment. Spirit answered yes, because I can choose to alter the truth that I have allowed the doctors to tell me to a more honoring one, so that I can in turn communicate this new and more empowering TRUTH to my daughter. And Spirit said no, because I can do my part, which will powerfully and positively help my daughter, but there are still others who will choose to fully align themselves to the fearful truth bestowed by professionals about what to expect with my daughter’s condition. There is also TRUTH in me knowing that her seizures are not necessarily moments of disharmony for her as outwardly expressed by her body.
I have been shown that during these seizures, she enters a state in which she is fully aligned to the harmony of the universe. A state of nirvana, love, peace, and full realization. But also in my conditioned truth, it is still an aspect of her current experience that I find myself lost and vulnerable to fear and despair. To many, these words will sound preposterous, especially if they can personally relate to my experiences with my daughter. However, Spirit has shown me that there is TRUTH to these words. There are stories, myths, and expectations that have been handed down from generation to generation and also new ones that have rooted themselves into our minds and bodies, and we have fully integrated them as truths. Ironically, projecting these false truths into our life further empowers our beliefs about them and our faith within them. Ironically projecting these false truths into our life, further empowering our belief about them and our faith within them. The challenge arises when our life circumstances bring into view a belief, thought, and/or perceived idea in a way that encourages us to ponder why and how we have developed a certain truth. Many individuals have had their truths taught, without question or curiosity from their part. The problem here is that when confronted with life-altering experiences, truths we might have clung onto in the past become obscure and filled with doubt. This obscurity and doubt can then catapult us into a quest for answers and truths that better honor the person we feel we truly are.
Today was one of those moments for me. I watched my daughter seize four times within 48 hours. I know that I have to choose to alter my perception toward her condition in a way that enforces a more honoring truth for what her life should be like. It means that I have to reach a point in which a doctor’s prognosis, a condition’s ailments, and the fears of the possibilities are not the ones that determine what I choose to believe is possible for her. I personally can’t put into words all my truths, but I know that my truths can be palpable currents of accurate and not so accurate perceptions. It’s about me consciously choosing to align myself with my TRUTH, regardless if I can become disillusioned in knowing that I could possibly have been living out truths that were never truly mine. On that note, I am grateful for the blessings that have connected to me through the inaccurate truths that might have been part of my past, and I am looking forward to how my new truths will further empower my moments to be more filled with clarity and joy. I am not sure how to fully actualize an altered perception when it involves my daughter’s condition, but I know that my willingness to experience a new truth for her condition will further invite the power of it into my life and hers. In quantum physics, the observer effect demonstrates that everything we look at is impacted at some level by our thoughts and our perception of what is being observed. It’s about choosing to project thoughts and perceptions into our experiences, conditions, ourselves, and others that empower the TRUTH to which we want to abide, not the truths that we have
been told by others and/our society to be the right ones. According to Dr. Lipton and his research, I can choose to create a new TRUTH for Mowat Wilson Syndrome, a truth that sustains a more joyful and healthy experience for my daughter. I am not claiming this will be easy, but I know miracles are part of all of our lives, a TRUTH I fully subscribe to.
Another TRUTH I fully align myself with, is that life is magical, full of extraordinary moments that are intertwined with love, joy, peace, and a sense of awe. What TRUTHS do you choose to align yourself to today, tomorrow, and in all your moments to come? I encourage you today to look at your life with love and sincerity. As you do, determine what truth is present in your reality that is not fully honoring your TRUTH. When you do, ponder how you yourself can choose to drastically alter your perception toward a more honoring experience. May love and light illuminate all your choices, endeavors, thoughts, TRUTHS, and adventures. With love, Emily Rivera Andrews

opportunity to express the highest within all forms of existence. As everything in the universe dances, you dance with it. As humans, we flow, we pulse, we harmonize, we integrate. We are dancing beings. By Arielle Giordano Dance is a form of body language that expresses itself in unique ways through the instrument of the body, which has the ability to open your heart and touch the soul. The body has the awareness to let you see and move into new internal spaces. Set it free to explore your hidden qualities and new ways of experiencing the world. This universal impulse to move, which we now call “dance,” exists today just as it did millions of years ago. In cultures both past and present, dance has been integrated into ceremonies for weddings, funerals, courting, instruction, storytelling, healing, arousal, amusement, entertainment, exercise, fun, uplifting the spirit, paying homage to gods and goddesses, and seeking and attaining aesthetic beauty that cannot be put into words. This devotion of dance has transformational powers of transcendence to inspire and awaken the soul and the spirit of your being. It is an invitation into your own body’s awareness to move in time and space and enjoy being in physical form. From here you can explore other areas within yourself, such as how you feel moving a particular body part, what you are thinking, as well as your feelings, stresses, and perspectives. Everything that you have ever experienced is housed within your body. It is the inn/storekeeper for your life, challenges, experiences, joys, and sorrows. Expression and hemisphere called the Action Observation Network. In What Can Dance Teach Us About Learning, by Scott T. Grafton M.D., he points out that we might begin to learn a dance step when someone describes it to us, but we learn it better when we physically perform the steps as we observe and imitate an instructor doing them. You must use your brain to dance and follow the steps. Listen, watch, focus, observe, and consciously process information at the same time you are moving your body and following another’s example. The neurons in your brain imitate an instructor with observation learning when taking a dance lesson, it creates new neural pathways. 4. Generate Physical Energy A fun activity such as dance stimulates the body and the endorphins in the brain. This movement creates more overall physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual activity. It is the first step in having more energy, motivation, and focus, which can be directed to successfully complete mental tasks, especially for people who have attention challenges (such as myself). Enjoy the process of you. Give yourself permission to allow your dance to awaken the potential within. Let new elements and qualities express and move through your body. It is not about “getting the moves right.” This is about the expression of you dancing through your body. This is the about your dance, your story, your journey of life. Relax, enjoy, and be free to experience uninhibited movement. Be the flow within you as you dance, and let your dance become your life!
Be the flow within you as you dance and let your dance become your life! 5. Feel Good about Yourself The more expressive movement allows you to be who you truly are and the more fully present you are in your own unique dance, the better you will look and feel. Feeling good about yourself is rooted within a balance of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies—which are all interconnected with each step you take. As you heal and grow in your inner and outer dance, you begin to glow in our own flow! As your inner beauty glows, it shows in your body and so does your-self-confidence!!

1. Domestic: One of the most common causes of unhappiness is a disturbed or unsatisfactory home life. •••••••••••••••••• The Search for Happiness
Are you a happy human being? Anyone who studies human nature realizes that physical beings go through life in a fluctuating state of mind, at times deep in despondency and pessimism, at times at the heights of happiness and joy. It is the rare person who spends much time in the “balanced” state between the two extremes, and most people seem to go through life with more than their share of joy or sadness. We would all agree that being happy is a truly desirable emotion and that being unhappy is something we would like to escape from whenever possible. Sadly, no human being has yet to discover a formula to achieve happiness with a certainty that it will be continued and last a lifetime. If you ask a happy person what it is that makes him or her happy and to define their level of happiness, that person will have a difficult time trying to put their answer to the words that others will be able to understand.
Happiness is a state of mind and there is no doubt that numerous fairly well-defined factors in life add together to contribute to it. It is no secret that children are happier than adults (though there are exceptions to this). The reason for this is young people are supported and cushioned from the complications and stress factors of life by their parents. As we move into adulthood, the stresses of being responsible for ourselves force us into the harsh reality of life. Many psychological studies have isolated seven factors that seem to contribute to personal happiness in life. I will briefly touch on each of the seven and ask you to evaluate which of them adds or subtracts from your personal level of happiness. I have found when we understand what is making us unhappy it is possible to change some of the negative aspects to more positive ones. In this case, allowing us to experience more happiness in the future.
2. Interpersonal: This factor relates to the part of our lives that involves relationships with others. This not only includes love life, but also the ability to interact with and relate to other people. We are part of a complex society and society forces us to respond to it. The degree to which we can respond effectively and, in turn, make society respond to us is a measure of our success and happiness or unhappiness. 3. Health: It is difficult to be totally happy unless you are healthy. This means good physical as well as mental health. A person can have a large amount of money and seem to have the best of everything, but it means little without good health. 4. Creativity: The human brain has a wonderful ability to respond quickly to changes in the environment, to avoid danger, and to problem solve. This ability enables us to pay an active and dynamic role in manipulating and improving our environment. This is creativity and helps us to find new solutions to old problems. Creativity is shown in the work of great writers, artists, scientists, et al. But at the more common levels, which most of us have to be content with, it involves sensing that feeling of satisfaction that comes when we can solve a problem or turn something commonplace into something beautiful. The more we can do this, the happier we will be. 5. Sensuality: These are the feel good things in our lives: good food, good sex, nice clothes and jewelry, beautiful homes, cars, etc. The human body is equipped with sense organs that cause us to desire things that give us pleasure. There is no way we would eat, drink, or make love unless we felt a deep sense of pleasure or satisfaction from doing it. The indulgence of the senses is a contributing factor to happiness. We must also realize that too much of a good thing may become overindulgence and cause unhappiness. 6. Achievement: Most people want to feel that their lives have a purpose and that this purpose is being achieved. Achievement can come from many things, including job, domestic life, relationships with others, and the ability to face and overcome challenges in life. People with high achievement abilities seem to be able to achieve overall happiness. Our sense of self-worth is a very important step to being happier in our lives. 7. General: All humans are very different from each other and very complicated. In understanding human happiness, we must take these differences and variables into account. There are many things that affect our feelings of well-being that cannot be put into a “category.”
33
Please read this column through and make some observations or write down a few comments about yourself for each of the seven categories. Which areas of your life make you the most happy? Which are not very positive for you right now? Most importantly, what can you do to change the negatives into positives? When we stop to self-reflect and reevaluate our circumstances, the creative ideas for change often come to us. It is unrealistic to think that we can always be happy; it is very realistic to believe that we can be happier than we currently are.
And remember, knowledge is the greatest power, so Walk In The Light.

Create More Energy Now By Phoebe Jenkins
Do you ever wake up in the morning and still feel tired even though you just slept? Do you have a hard time beginning your day’s work because of low energy? Guess what, you are not alone. Many people have trouble completing their to-do lists, going to work, spending time with their families and getting enough physical exercise simply because they are too tired. According to the National Coffee Association, over half of the U.S. Population drinks at least three cups of coffee every day to stay awake! I also used to suffer from low energy and had no idea what to do about it. During that time, I found myself zoning out and would snap back to reality only to realize someone was talking to me. I had to force myself to complete my work, and I had mood swings that frustrated everyone around me. Fortunately, I received a great education that taught me how to increase my energy and sustain it at a high. As a result, my mood swings ceased and I started enjoying many more conversations. It was a miracle! Now, I wake up feeling refreshed and go about my day with gusto, no coffee needed. Unfortunately, not everyone has had this great transformation. So, why is everyone so tired? Let me share my knowledge: Four big factors that decrease our energy are chemical stress (this can be food), emotional stress, mental stress, and physical stress. Additionally, foods we eat can either increase or decrease our energy. The top foods that decrease our energy are caffeine, coffee, soft drinks, alcohol, too much or not enough meat, processed and “chemicalized” foods, tobacco, milk, sugar, artificial sweeteners, and trans fats. Stimulants such as caffeine and sugar may seem to give an energy boost, but in the long run they actually deplete our bodies by drawing out minerals and nutrients. These substances also are highly addictive (hence the three cups of coffee a day). No doubt, it can be very helpful to reduce or eliminate several of these foods if you are continually feeling tired. The great news is that there are many ways to increase your energy. Here are my top five tips to get you started:
Increase Energy 1. Drink more water! Most Americans are chronically dehydrated. Before you go to sugar or caffeine, have a glass of water and wait a few minutes to see what happens. Caution: Soft drinks are America’s number one source of added sugar. 2. Reduce or eliminate caffeine. The ups and downs of caffeine include dehydration and blood sugar ups and downs, making mood swings more frequent. 3. Change or exit relationships that drain you. People can drain your energy. It does not mean that they are bad, but it is good to notice who drains you and why. See if you can transform those relationships by communicating and setting boundaries, or end the relationship. 4. Get more sleep and rest and relaxation. When you are tired or stressed, your body will crave energy. These cravings are often a result of being sleep deprived, going to bed late, and waking up early, for months or years on end! 5. Evaluate the amount of animal food you eat. Eating too much meat, dairy, chicken, and eggs can lead to low energy. So can eating too little! Experiment. Respect your body’s individuality.
It is important to remember that fuel for our energy is not just the food we eat, but also the choices we make for our lives. Everything we take in is food for our body, mind, and spirit and this can be either energizing or draining. For example, think of a time in your life when you were struggling emotionally, perhaps going through a break up or suffering from the loss of a loved one. In these situations, food did not change your energy and mood and you felt drained no matter what. Now, think of a time when you felt amazing; perhaps you had just fallen in love or reached a long desired goal. Regardless of what foods you ate, you felt great, energized and happy. What would your life be like if you had increased energy every day? You already have everything you need within you. Will you take action now to stop allowing low energy to rule your life or will you continue to be controlled by your low energy levels? With careful thought and loving reflection, you can feed yourself in an energizing way. Working with your body rather than against it will bring you increased energy, stabilized weight, and sustainable health. The challenge is yours.

other than its tendency to scrape across parking curbs because of its low to the ground design. The Story of Joy Reflecting on the theme of joyful living led me to an online search of the word joy. I was surprised by the high number of links to consumer spending. While I don’t believe buying things is bad, I do think it would be wise to be more discerning about the corporate marketing messages that bombard us everyday. Many of the clever appeals are memorable, but they can also distract us from our true needs and those of our local economies. A particular reference to The Story of Joy caught my attention. It turns out this catchy phrase refers to an advertising campaign promoting the joy of owning a BMW vehicle. Here are 10 reasons why owning a BMW is joyful according to BMW: it makes you more youthful, it inspires works of art, its collectable, it shapes the future, it has a fan club, its contagious, it can be counted, it’s efficient, it’s dynamic, and it’s unstoppable. BMW didn’t mention anything about the price of their vehicles, but perhaps the cost isn’t important with so many other joyful benefits.
After all, who wouldn’t want to feel more youthful and unstoppable while helping to shape the future in an efficient and dynamic way? It’s no surprise large and successful companies like BMW spend so much money linking their brands with human aspirations like faith, hope, love, peace, and joy. This form of advertising is vital for an economy that depends on stimulating continuous needs and wants for all types of material things—big and small. For some people, buying a new BMW may be analogous to the joy of getting engaged or having a baby. I remember reading about a wealthy lady in New York that was buried with her beloved Cadillac. It’s a new twist on the ancient practice of burying Egyptian pharaohs with their chariots, boats, and other worldly treasures. I used to drive a BMW convertible. It was a great car

Why not take the next step and incorporate popular business brands into our holidays? Imagine Santa Claus squeezing down the chimney wearing Salvatore Ferragomo shoes while dragging the presents in an oversized Coach handbag. Just try not to think about the Thanksgiving Day turkey wearing those fashionable pajama jeans. We could even add more corporate-friendly holidays. How about Disney Day in mid January when everyone dresses up as their favorite Disney character? We would have more than 600 characters to choose from including Abu the genie (Aladdin), Ursula the sea witch (The Little Mermaid) and Yen Sid, the powerful sorcerer (Fantasia). It would be an opportunity for many of us to make amends for our uninspired costume on Halloween 10 weeks earlier. How about Happy Lawn Day in May when you try to create the best yard on your street in the pursuit of an exciting prize like a riding lawn mower or a three-speed weed whacker. I’m sure Donald Trump would lease his voice to promote Your Fired Day in September, a day celebrating our ability to overcome average bosses. Corporations could even compete for the honor of being honored with a national holiday. No doubt in my mind that many would fork over millions of dollars for the exclusive branding rights for their own special day. Perhaps the government could include some tax breaks as an incentive. After conquering the calendar, patriotic marketing gurus could take a whirl at invigorating American history.
Who could dispute the pivotal role that Just Do It played in fostering liberty and justice? The best part of waking up reminds us about the mythology of coffee in helping Americans cope with those long hours toiling in factories at the turn of the century? Reaching the moon wasn’t a small step for man; it was a giant leap for the Golden Arches. Start noticing all the helpful reminders on how to be good-citizen consumers: obey your thirst, invest with confidence, think outside the bun, raise your hand if you’re sure, fly the friendly skies, and don’t leave home without it. It gets confusing doesn’t it, but that’s the point of history for some people.
Real history, like genuine joy, is not as exciting as manufactured hype.
It’s more tempting (and fun) to unleash the infinite possibilities of nonsense with never ending promotions; so easy a caveman can do it. I admit I have a modest affinity for some brands as long as they are fair and balanced. Here’s some of my favorites: • Nutella (the original hazelnut spread), • Newman’s Own organic food (shameless exploitation in pursuit of the common good), • Discraft (world leader in disc sports), • Activia (it really does taste good), • Annie’s Natural Dressings (good for you and good for the earth), • Holy Mole by Rick Hotton (crusader for conscious living), • Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps (no tagline, but noteworthy for having the world’s most verbose packaging label), • multiple brands of beer, • and of course Transformation Magazine. One final thought about the story of joyful spending. Enjoy the clever marketing of national brands, but spend your money supporting local small business owners whenever possible.

Vibration
Remembering
You Are Joy
turning back to the way things were. As we wiggle our way out of the old template, the experience inevitably is difficult and can be unpleasant. Like many people today, I have been feeling and noticing this shift. We are shedding the image of the person we once identified as ourselves.
Our naked truth is being revealed, which has been hidden beneath many layers of Self.
By Ami Fountain
Finding joy is as simple as raising the vibration of any given moment. Joy is an integral part of the makeup of who we really are at a core level, so it is always there. Yet when we experience times of struggle, this state of being can be difficult to attain. Depending on the intensity of our energy movement—or emotions—we can engage in a physical activity such as looking at photos of children or a recent vacation to raise our feeling/ vibration. However, the foundation of this process begins with a knowing perspective that we have the power to do this! This power harnesses an ability to feel and consciously connect to the prevailing energy of our being. From this self actualization, our ability to manage our moods, emotions, and eventually thoughts, is a reality that serves the highest good. It all begins with you! Not in a way of selfishness, but in a manner of self focus. It is a known fact that you are the only one who has the ability to change yourself, and this power is stronger than any outside influence from other people or the environment. In this regard, emotion plays a big role when working toward attaining a joyful state of being. The emotional state of joy feels like elation, ease, celebration. When you come to “know” that joy is an aspect of the very essence of your being, tapping into its frequency becomes much easier to accomplish. The vibration of joy has an ever-flowing, spinning, swirling that feels like it could go on and on. It is play, wonder, amazement. As we awaken to a greater meaning and purpose in this world, an opening up to the spirit or the life force energy within occurs, and we often find ourselves shedding layers of discomfort in the process.
We stir from an unconscious slumber to open our eyes and see the world in a different way. A conscious vision is ignited, and we see there is no
38
These layers are like garments, ones we tried on because we were told this is how we should be, or this is how we are suppose to feel or act. This shedding shows up in all forms and feelings. The key to revealing the brilliant essence of who you are in spirit is as simple as placing your attention on your joy—the love that you possess—or any other action that raises your vibration to a place where you feel good and shake off the densities of your old Self. Allow what wants to flow through you to just move effortlessly. This process will not help you to avoid feeling uncomfortable energy, but it will help to express and release it. With practice, this becomes easier and a transformation or transmutation of lower-vibration energies occurs. There is a sense of a quickening throughout humanity—an energy cycle of movement that is fast and furious.
Have you noticed that time seems to speed past more and more quickly as the days pass? Are you experiencing issues and emotions that rise up at lightning speed and don’t make sense or are unusually intense? I see emotions much like physical symptoms. As they begin to well up to the surface, feelings pour out in tears, yelling, etc., or perhaps even a physical expression such as a rash. In these situations, our first programmed reaction is to ask why, or to delve into discovery of how. We look to identify the root and then to then find the solution. Or we lean toward the tendency to hold back, especially if our surroundings do not appear to be an appropriate place to release or reveal. For example, you are with your children and you don’t want them to see or feel your angst, or you are in a public place where crying would draw too much attention. There are many variations on this theme, but “the quickening” has eliminated much of the time we have for analyzing these issues and emotions. As a result, we must learn an effective way to throw caution into the wind and make new choices that serve not only us, but the masses as well. We have to own our emotions, not become them. It is as simple as acknowledging what we are feeling. Saying, “I am mad!” or “It hurts!” releases the emotion.
Owning a feeling rather than believing its origin comes from something or someone outside of ourselves will bypass a long, drawn-out release and healing process.
This allows life force energy to flow and others—especially our children—will see an exemplary model of free flowing being. Those who operate in this manner shine at their core, at their divine essence. We are all derived from divine essence. Our power is far beyond the mind’s ability to conceive; however, we need to accept this into our belief systems to harness it.
When we allow energy to move, then the joy of who we are returns and negative emotions will dissipate. Returning to your natural state and core being is a huge piece in the puzzle of remembering you Are Joy. As you let go, you open yourself to anticipation, delight, and wonder of yourself and the world around you. Remember, put yourself back together one piece at a time, and shine your beautiful light from within!

Meditation
Harness Attention Through Meditation By Jeff Gitterman
I recently read an article about Max Planck, who won a Nobel Prize for his work with atoms. After years of study and research, Planck eventually said that he could only know one thing—that some invisible force holds together energy to create this minute solar system, and he must assume, based on his research, that some higher intelligence is behind this force. Quantum physicists today will tell you the same thing, usually in rather mind-twisting statements. But these ideas are not just the esoteric territory of the scientific fringe. In fact, scientists have believed that the world can be completely understood in terms of energy for quite some time. In 1632, Galileo published A Dialogue Concerning Two Chief World Systems, which included his principle of relativity, which states that the fundamental laws of physics are universal in all fixed situations. Others, such as Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein, continued to build on the work of Galileo, which eventually led to the discovery of Einstein’s famous Theory of Relativity in 1905. E=mc2 states that energy equals mass times the speed of light squared, that energy and mass are equivalent and transmutable. The idea that everything in this world is made of energy is also something that has been known to mystics for millennia, particularly in the Eastern traditions. Over the past 30 years, as we have increasingly seen a greater synthesis of Eastern and Western thought than ever before, many ancient teachings of the East have gained a wider acceptance in the West, especially as science has begun to validate some of the key Eastern spiritual insights. If everything is energy at the deepest level, it would stand to reason the more tuned in you are to the Source of energy in the universe, the more you can actually accomplish. Any truly successful person understands how to access this energy to some extent. According to many Eastern systems, the mind is the greatest obstacle to better understanding the world and connecting to the larger energetic system that surrounds us. Especially in this day and age, when the mind is bombarded with so many distractions, it’s no wonder it can’t keep still. If we take a moment
40
and look within, most of us will notice a voice inside our heads that is talking so fast we can barely concentrate on anything. In a way, this voice reminds me of walking down the street in New York City alongside a homeless man who is talking to himself aloud. As crazy as this sight so often seems, most of us in fact are doing the exact same thing, just silently to ourselves rather than to the public at large. Sometimes I ask people in my seminars to give me an image that describes their mind. “A six-lane highway,” one man said. “An endless to-do list,” said another. Other images people come up with include an orchestra without a conductor, a jigsaw puzzle with only some pieces joined together, and a traffic jam at a busy intersection. Almost without exception, people come up with images that represent chaos, confusion, fragmentation, complexity, and lack of integration. Generally speaking, there are two ways our minds work. If you have a project or a task or a problem to solve, you can engage your mind to help you accomplish your goals. A scientist figuring out a lab experiment, a mathematician working out a complex equation, and a writer creating a novel are all engaging the mind in this way. When you engage the mind in problem solving, it is working for you; you are using your mind. And as the saying goes,
“The mind is a terrible master but a wonderful servant.” Then there are those times when our minds endlessly chatter. For most of our day, we are not engaging our minds; rather, our minds are engaging us. Your mind may be running around all over the place, depleting your energy and not really accomplishing anything. And during these times, there is probably not much that is useful that your mind is telling you. It’s just trying to keep you hooked—on it. When you are engaging the mind to do a task, you are using the mind.
When your attention is caught up in the stream of thoughts, the mind is using you. The first step in learning to harness the power of attention is to become aware of how it moves. To do this, we need to find a way to disengage from the stream of thoughts that
preoccupy us. This is one of the fundamental reasons people practice meditation, in all its many forms. Although meditation is probably the most direct and effective way to harness the power of your attention, there are many other methods as well, and given that we are all unique, each of us should find the method that seems to fit best for us. For some people, it will be the meditation cushion. For others, it might be a nature walk, a kickboxing class, church visits, or a morning shower. What you do is not nearly as important as how and why.
So when I use the term meditation, I don’t just mean sitting cross-legged on a cushion, but rather participating in any deliberate activity that teaches you to disengage from a compulsive relationship to the stream of thought. There are numerous books that have been written over the years on the subject of meditation and how to disengage from the thinking mind or, more simply put, stop listening to the voice inside your head. It’s important that you find a method that works for you. The benefit of learning how to disengage our attention from the thought stream is that we can then apply our minds more readily toward more constructive things, such as accomplishing tasks and goals, connecting with other people, to our own true purpose, and what we wish to accomplish in life. It creates space within us—an opening that allows more energy to flow into us. In this seemingly paradoxical way, having more space in our minds allows us to accomplish more and more things in the world.

Question: Question: This happens to me a lot. I’ll walk into McDonald’s, for example, and there will be only a couple of other people in the place. They all will have ordered. I’ll approach the counter, and just as I do, the order taker turns and walks away— usually never to be seen again. As the orders come up one by one, I stand at the counter’s edge, waiting to place my order. Yet, each time a cashier comes to the counter to call out that an order is ready, I’ll glare hungrily into his eyes, which evokes no action or response. Then, he’ll scamper back out of sight, as if my making eye contact didn’t happen. This repeats itself until a new customer comes in, and someone scurries from the back to call out to the new patron, “May I help you?” Meanwhile, I am pushed aside by courtesy to clear the way for other people. I kid you not. This happens far too many times for it to be just a mistake. If I am with friends, all my friends generally order, get served, and leave while I’m still standing there waiting to place my order. Sure, I am reserved, shy, and introverted, but I am not a ghost! I hate this and have come to not want to go out anymore. What can I do to stop this unfair treatment? Dr ZZ: Fair or unfair, you have to get yourself up off the floor if you don’t want to be stepped on. It’s the squeaky wheel that gets the grease, and from the sounds of it, you can use a few point-
42
ers in squeaking. It’s called self-assertiveness: the ability to ask for 100 percent of what you want 100 percent of the time, to be willing to hear no, and to negotiate the difference. Often it’s not enough to simply be present on the customer side of the counter to get the staff’s attention. You need to squeak up and say something like, “Pardon me, I’m next.” “Excuse me. It’s my turn to order,” or “I beg your pardon. I was here first.” Chances are the servers on the other side of the counter are not intentionally ignoring you. As they come and go, if they continue to see you standing there, they may imagine that you have already been waited on. The ball is in YOUR court. A few polite but firm statements to get their attention is all you need to get on top of the game and feel in charge of your destiny—not victim to it. Question: My 12-year-old son has made friends with our neighbor. The neighbor is a 40-year-old married man with two small children. I find him to be a fine person, who’s kind and adores children. He loves to play with my son at sports and video games, and he’s never ever been alone with my son though they often chat on the phone. Recently, I taped one of the conversations, and it worried me. I’ve enclosed a partial transcript below. He often tells my son that he’s his best friend. He’s never requested or implied that he would like to be alone with my son, but I’m concerned. Man: Do you do physical education at school? Do you shower at school? Son: Yeah, we have phys ed, but we don’t have showers. Man: So, you go home and shower when you get home? Son: Yeah, sometimes. Man: That’s better, that’s better, that’s better, definitely never let anyone see you when you shower. Son: Yeah I know, when you shower, it’s like you need to shower on your own with no one else. It’s like personal. Man: I shower with my son. (His son is 18-months old.) Son: Yeah, well I mean like showering with your son or someone you know like a relative, that’s OK. Man : Yes sure, relatives, son, stuff like that. Or if it’s a friend that you really trust. That’s the only way, no other way. Son: Yeah.
Man: No other way, plus it’s just simple. You know you’re just being washed, you’re just being cleaned, it’s when people start doing crazy, nasty, stupid, stuff and that’s when they get crazy. Please give me your opinion. What does he mean about only showering with a best friend? Should I stop this friendship? Dr. ZZ: You have reason to be concerned. The transcript of the telephone conversation is quite disturbing and implies a distorted sexuality. At the very least, this man is imparting odd ideas to your son. There’s nothing sexual about boys showering with one another—or with men for that matter. My sense is that your neighbor may be speaking of his own fear of sexual arousal when he speaks of “crazy, nasty stuff.” It sounds as if he is fantasizing or expressing what he would like to do. He may indeed be setting the stage for inappropriate interaction later. Then again, it’s also possible that this may be innocent. You may not want to act too rashly, but you need to warn your child that the things this man is telling him are not right, and that he should report any inappropriate touching or advances to you at once. Be open with your son without being critical. It may also be wise to play the tape for your neighbor, and to let him know that you are going to be on the alert for any suspicious activity. Inspiration mere human in the way we normally perceive humans. You become something else—powerful, calm, centered, and clear—a channel for the light and you live to share your love with others. The heart rules the day rather than the mind. by Sheri Rosenthal Many of you have heard of a spiritual path or journey being called a path of heart. I suppose most folks believe that means that the path is one of love or one that will make us happy. Those assertions would not be wrong, but the path of heart means so much more than that.
It is a path where the heart and spirit take precedence over the ego-mind and reason. Now don’t get me wrong here, reason has been a favorite of mine my whole life— however it has been more of a tyrant than an assistant. It is the rare humans who decide to tip the scales in their lives and put their hearts in charge of their lives over their reason. If you walk the path of heart know that you will be judged for doing so. Of course people judge us all the time, but normally that judgment keeps us in line doing what the societal dream wants us to do—rather than stretching our wings to create something amazing in life. Judgment will keep us on the straight-away doing what is expected of us and keep us linking our self-worth to others.
Walking the path of heart means that you take responsibly for what you are doing and saying and you can no longer indulge in self-pity or feeling like a victim. Honestly, most folks cannot bear to let go of the wonderful feeling of attention that self-pity brings them. But for a spiritual warrior, this kind of feeling is aberrant and no longer acceptable. There is no doubt that walking a path like this is difficult, challenging, and unfamiliar. There aren’t many models of other humans living this lifestyle for us to follow and learn from. And even if we have a teacher to emulate—most of us will argue with our teacher for the right to defend our illogical logic and boring reason. I was one of those people. In the end, to walk the path of heart you must give up all of your favorite things. Doing so is like giving up your most beloved toys and learning to be happy with something abstract that you can’t sink your teeth into. Some of my favorite things were: arguing to hear my own brilliance speak, the need to be right to inflate my ego and make others wrong, the need to always have the last word, the desire to always have the perfect thing to say so that people would respect and adore me, my certainty that others had been responsible for my painful life so that I could have something to complain about. These are just a few deeply ingrained habits that were painful to detach from. In retrospect, it seems incredible that I desired those tasty morsels—since now the very thought of behaving that way makes me queasy. Now being accountable for myself seems natural, and keeping my mouth shut when someone is expressing his or her point of view feels great—after all, it took a lot of personal power to show people how stupid they were! You see what I am saying? Having the deep understanding that no one can do anything to me is second nature now, and the idea that I could be a victim or subject to another’s actions is just laughable. It’s down-right funny to imagine getting upset at the words and deeds of others or taking them personally. The end result of walking a path of heart is that you are no longer a
44
So are you honestly ready to give up all of your pet peeves—all the things that stir you up and get your blood boiling? Are you ready to give up that juicy feeling of being right, and that feeling of self-pity when things are not going your way? Well I hope so because every path has its price. To stay the way you are costs a lot— your personal power is sucked dry whenever you indulge in a rollercoaster of emotional reactions. And yes, you pay for the path of the heart too. It costs you all of your favorite things, and you must live a life of abstinence (no more self-pity and selfimportance). I encourage you to tally up what you’ve been spending in personal power and ask yourself:
In the end, is it better to pay the price for freedom or is it better to feel comfortable in your old routines and pay the price for slavery?
