Welcome
S
ometimes situations seem so overwhelming and there are so many areas of need we just cannot see the wood for the trees. Recently the news flashes we are getting from across Europe are like that; bad news seems to be never ending. We see many displaced people who have escaped their tragic situations only to be faced with overcrowded camps in Europe. Other migrants are trying to cross country borders with expectations of a better life, while human trafficking is on the increase with more in slavery than ever before. Violence, crime and terrorism seem to be increasing with war and aggression never ending. Financial insecurity and the near collapse of some states is leading to many forgotten people living in extreme poverty. It is a depressing picture. My question… is there a parallel here to the spiritual state of Europe? We live in a society where less than 2.5% are Christians and the people say “we have no need of God”. But actually we know God is the only answer to all of these issues. It says in Psalm 121 v1–2: “From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord the Creator of heaven and earth.” The answer to the issues of Europe is Jesus, He transforms people, which results in change to society through Christians being salt and light and doing ‘works of service’ (Eph. 4 v12). As you read this magazine, please can I ask you to prayerfully consider what you can do to help. Thank you for your faithful support, please continue to pray for our amazing partners and for God’s mercy and blessing on Europe.

Transforming Europe – One Life at a time
Free hearts,
free lives
There is a new crisis in Bulgaria. During the last 15 years everything has changed as violence has grown excessively in all its forms. It wasn’t long ago when no one spoke about domestic violence, but today the picture is very different.
H
ow has this grown so rapidly? A combination of new-found liberty along with a lack of respect for women, who are not treated as equals, and the historic and cultural background of centuries of oppressive Ottoman rule and more recently communism. The need to work with victims of domestic violence is growing daily. The statistics are shocking. One source reports that one in four women in Bulgaria are the subject of domestic violence*; another source says almost one million women suffer from domestic abuse every year**. Mission Possible Bulgaria (MPB) is helping to make a difference, as Tania Koniarova, MPB, shares: “Back in 2009 God laid on our hearts the need for this ministry and we ran the first Restoration 4
Programme at our Dobromirka home. Alongside this we developed several support groups in different regions of Bulgaria. Women from our team share the Bible and pray together with women at risk, those suffering domestic violence or severe trauma. The programme is based on a Bible study called ‘The Hem of His Garment’. Just as the sick woman in Luke chapter eight touched the edge of Jesus’ cloak and received physical and emotional healing, so we use nine Biblical topics that touch and heal the hearts of the women who come. The programme aims to help the women with spiritual care and support by sharing and counselling, and some relaxation techniques (e.g. pampering). Prayer is a vital part. Often these turn into times of deliverance

where women experience lasting freedom from bitterness, unforgiveness, pain and rejection.” MPB are already planning their next Program from the 2nd to 9th October 2015 at the centre in Dobromirka. The number of women who have applied to attend is growing daily. The need is huge, but due to the type of work the maximum number of participants they can manage is 12. It has therefore become necessary to hold ‘The Hem of His Garment’ conferences at least twice a year in the Spring and Autumn. In the longer term, their vision is to be able to accommodate women for two months at the Dobromirka home. This will have an enormous and lasting impact on the most difficult cases. MPB believe that God’s favour is on this ministry as testimonies from these women are most encouraging. Here is one example from a 60 year old, housewife: “I have been beaten all of my life. My husband used to grab my hair and hit my head against the wall. Soon after I became a Christian the violence continued, I was silent out of fear, but in my heart built up so much anger and desire for revenge that I began to hate my husband. I didn’t want to forgive him for anything. I justified myself by the thought that he was not a believer and didn’t love God. But later on he became a believer. “The change in his life was not easy and rather slow, maybe he was not whole-hearted, but at least he did not hurt me as before. The problem was that
my heart was not free from anger and unforgiveness. It choked me and I started experiencing anxiety and insomnia. No drugs and therapies were able to help me. “When I heard about this programme I didn’t have any hope, I didn’t trust anyone and was sceptical. But once it started I experienced a change of heart with every passing day. While I was reading the Bible I understood that God wanted to free me from the abuse and to heal me from the pain and fear. Thank God! “A few days before the end of the programme, during one prayer time, the Spirit of God touched me and I saw something like a weight lift off my shoulders. Since that moment I have been free! Praise the Lord!”
Former victims of domestic violence are now experiencing freedom through Mission Possible Bulgaria’s ‘The Hem of His Garment’ programme.

Answering the Call
to Macedonia
I have recently returned from a memorable eight day trip to Veles, Macedonia. Our mission was not only to help their own puppeteers develop their skills but also to assist in the production and recording of their own locally scripted puppet dramas. Once converted into DVD’s they plan to use these as evangelistic outreaches in the town—a brilliant idea given that the presentation of ‘religion’ in schools is not permitted by law.
B
ack in 2014 I was asked by TEN if I would be able to assist the Evangelical Church in Veles with the development of their puppet ministry. Having many years of leadership experience, both in the UK and overseas with The Signpost Puppet Theatre, I readily heeded the ‘call’. In late May a team of nine puppeteers from the UK went out to work alongside a small, yet very enthusiastic puppet team already working in the church in Veles, a city of 60,000 people, 40 minutes drive south of the capital Skopje. Rachel Lee, Signpost puppeteer and TEN Ambassador said, “We were all made really welcome and it was such a privilege to work alongside the team in Veles.
Despite our obvious language differences, the puppets seemed to manage admirably and everyone was delighted with what we were able to perform and record for them in Macedonian—despite all those extra vowels!” During the week we also had the opportunity to minister and perform to local Roma children at the weekly afterschool club run by Pastor Dragan Manev and his team. Although our cultures and backgrounds were very different the use of puppets to tell others about Jesus was not diminished in its ability to communicate the Good News to both young and old alike.

Albania: a land of contrasts and huge
spiritual opportunity I first started to pray for Albania and sponsor Bibles to go there in the communist times when it was closed. Visiting for the second time in June 2015, the sense of change and development and the opportunities for the gospel were such a contrast.
F
rom a handful of believers as the country opened up there are now around 30,000 Christians across many churches and denominations. It’s a lovely country on the Adriatic coast with gorgeous scenery and beaches and a long history, alongside grinding poverty, drug addiction and alcoholism as well as increasing Islamic influence. ISIS is now setting up in parts of Tirana and some mosques are preaching radical Islam. The new believers are mainly ex-Muslims. I was able to meet three of our very able and gifted partners: Hervin Fushekati is the head of the ‘Church of God‘ denomination, pastor of its main church as well as the Riverbank church plant, mentor of the leaders/ pastors of 26 church plants, radio 12
broadcaster, a leader in the Albania Evangelical Alliance… and more. Hervin is also the Head of The International School of Theology and Leadership (ISTL) Bible College—he saw the need for church planters to be trained, given the lack of a Christian history in Albania. With TEN’s help at the start, to provide needed equipment, the School has now trained 26 church planters and currently around 50 students are receiving tuition in Bible and ministry topics. A number of these intend to plant additional new churches after graduation if they can get financial support. I spoke to some of the students about their motivation for doing the ISTL course. One of them, a 22 year old nurse from a nearby coastal town, said her vision was

to establish and lead a ‘Church of God’ church within five years in her home town and ensure the people in that area heard the gospel. Erion Cuni, church planter, started a church in a new building in a fast developing part of Tirana in October 2013. Some months later he expanded the church and then shortly afterwards sent his most able couple to start a new church plant in another growing part of the city. His church has a high proportion of ex-drug addicts and ex-prisoners. He has a vision for planting additional churches and starting a drug rehab centre, as well as a ministry to reach mature men with the gospel (a current gap in Albanian churches). At Mission Possible Albania (MPA), Besa Shapllo and the team run the ‘House of Hope’ work in Bathora, providing facilities for children of single parent families, summer camps, Alpha courses, youth work and facilities for the local community. The aim of my visit was to encourage our partners and support their work. To visit these gifted, dedicated people is to be deeply challenged in one’s own spiritual walk and to want to do everything possible to publicise what they do, in order to encourage others to support them to make their church growth vision possible. The bottom line is this: the Spirit has moved in Albania, is moving there now, and there are many opportunities for the future. Written by Chris Hill, TEN Ambassador

Church Partnerships – An inside look
60 Seconds with…
Marjorie Ray
How did you first hear about TEN? Soon after my husband, Alan, and I moved to Bristol in 1985 I met Freda Bawler and heard about the work of Eurovangelism. We subsequently met Gary Cox and heard the Kuranjis speaking at our church. I was very impressed with Danny and Vera’s story, of how they had left a comfortable life in Canada to return to their native, war-torn, land of Serbia. I was also impressed by Gary’s story of how he had given up a paid job to make potentially dangerous journeys to Eastern Europe, taking humanitarian aid and Bibles to desperate people following the breakup of Yugoslavia.
How are you currently involved with TEN? Since Alan died in 2005 my main involvement with TEN has been by monthly financial support and by prayer. I have also attended the conferences and met up with church leaders from a number of countries. Why do you support TEN? I support the work of TEN because it is not a faceless organisation. It is people I have met and trust, and I know they are doing a great work, spreading the gospel, and bringing the love of Jesus to those who are less fortunate than us.
What areas of ministry are you most passionate about? My main interest is to see people come to know the love of Jesus by whatever means is most appropriate. How have you been involved with TEN in the past? Our church in Bristol started filling A4 sized boxes with food items—finding transportation on empty lorries returning to Europe—in order to feed the hungry refugees. After we moved to Rugby in 1997, Alan was particularly keen to introduce Harvest for the Hungry to our new church and between 1997 and 2005 we organised a harvest project each September. The largest number of boxes filled one year was 84. 14

WHAT’S GOING ON IN...
...Bulgaria
B
ulgaria is familiar to us because of the many news articles about immigration. In fact nearly 25% of Bulgarians have left their country to find work in other European countries. Conversely many English families have left these shores to buy property and live in Bulgaria. Both looking for a better life. So what is life like in Bulgaria?
The euphoria of those early years evaporated, the country sank back into depression and most of the converts disappeared. After centuries of being subjected by Muslim then communist ideologies the people are experiencing freedom for the first time. But it does not always feel like it. Wages are very low, unemployment is high. The infrastructure is crumbling and the country needs
investment, which is slowly coming via money from the EU. For centuries the Orthodox Church has been dominant in politics and influence, even in communist days. But protestant churches are looked upon as sects and not a real church. The underground church was greatly persecuted until 1989 when communism fell. In the following few years many evangelists went into Bulgaria. There were large rallies and many people professed salvation. Several of the present leaders were converted at this time. The euphoria of those early years evaporated, the country sank back into depression and most of the converts disappeared. Now there are many small churches spread across the towns and villages. They are largely led by faithful pastors. There is a surprising degree of unity across the national churches and across
denominations, but local competition is sometimes a hangover from former times. There is a need for church buildings in many places as congregations are often having to meet in homes or rented buildings. The Gypsies and Turks tend to have their own congregations but there is a strong sense of brotherhood with the Bulgarians, unlike in the nation at large. Bulgaria is waiting with open arms for fellowship and encouragement from Christians in the West. Written by Mark Jeffery
Diana and Mark Jeffery are associated with TEN and have been working in Bulgaria regularly since 2008 with about 30 churches across the different cultures, including Gypsy, Bulgarian, and Turkish.

I am a UK taxpayer and want Eurovangelism to reclaim tax on all my donations in the past four years and until further notice, meaning an extra 25p for the charity for every £1 I give. I understand that I must pay UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax at least equal to the tax that will be claimed by all my donations to charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs in each tax period. I understand that other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. I will advise Transform Europe Now if I become a non-taxpayer. I will also advise Transform Europe Now if I change my address.
