AN EDUCATION RESCUED In 2006, Illinois Wesleyan student Thomas Schroeder ’09 lost his father to a heart attack. This unexpected event placed his family in extreme financial hardship, and Schroeder contemplated returning home and working full time to help his mother pay the bills. At most, he might have been able to take classes at the local junior college. Yet before he could leave the University, he received a grant from the Parent Association that covered his tuition and fees—and saved his Illinois Wesleyan education. As he puts it: "I will not forget the combination of happiness and relief I felt at that moment; it nearly brought me to tears." The lasting gratitude of Thomas Schroeder and others like him is among the rewards of giving to the Wesleyan Fund. Gifts to the Wesleyan Fund accomplish much, from providing aid to deserving students to enhancing academic and co-curricular programs. They bring direct resources to bear on immediate needs, enhancing the financial health of the University, strengthening the stature of our program among peers, and reaffirming the University’s reputation as a place valued by its alumni. MAKING ILLINOIS WESLEYAN AFFORDABLE The Wesleyan Fund provides an excellent opportunity to transform a life: nine in ten students receive needor merit-based financial assistance, and one in every eight dollars of financial aid comes from the Wesleyan Fund. Donors may support an existing scholarship, create new or fund existing named scholarships, establish an endowed scholarship, or assist students who have lost a breadwinning parent.

This year more than ever, the University has a tremendous need to boost alumni participation—and increase the dollars available to meet annual expenses.
