EU biofuels policy is failing

Page 1

Dear MEPs,

EU biofuels policy is failing to deliver on its basic objective of cutting CO2 emissions from Europe’s transport. Instead, it exacerbates land grabs, deforestation, hunger and poverty. · Current Current p lans tto o ffulfi ulfill ll most most of of tthe he 110% 0% rrenewable enewable ttransport ransport ttarget arget with plans biofuels would have the same effect on the climate as adding up to 26 million extra cars to Europe’s roads. · The amount of land required to fill a family car with grain biofuel would provide enough food to feed a child for 200 days.

Can it be justied to support this with €10 billion of public resources every year?

We urge you to vote to: · halt the expansion of land-based biofuels in transport, · fully account for their climate impacts, including the emissions from indirect land-use change, · phase out public support and subsidies for environmentally damaging fuels.
