COVER STORY MV STADT KOLN

The full size version of this stunning model was initially designed as a personal yacht for the chancellor of the Reich prior to the start of WW2. It was lavishly designed for use on the Rhine but was stored on the river during the conflict and survived unscathed. When found by the Americans she was put to use as a recreational ship. The City Council of Cologne operated her for 30 years and hosted many distinguished guests including HRH Queen Elizabeth II..

how a 1/24 scale replica was built by modifying the Deans Marine’s Mk1 ASR kit. There are plenty of helpful tips for anyone wishing to copy this conversion. Lastly, there is the second and final part on Forceful a Director Class paddle tug which ends with a description of the craft’s performance on the water. Among the regular articles we have Plastic Kit Scene reviewing all the most recent kits, Vintage Chatter looking back on the Lobster boat produced by Midwest Inc., and Scale Scene starting a two part presentation on building hulls. Waterlines takes a look at the Elder Dempster Lines, while Powerplug explains why checking on the little things can prevent serious problems at the lakeside. All this together with other articles of a more general interest makes this edition a very good read.

HI EVERYONE,

It always amazes me that I still estimate room and furniture sizes in Imperial units despite having almost all my schooling using the metric system. I presume it is a function of the practicality of the old system which allows me to take my shoe as a foot and an open stretch of an arm as a yard. The danger comes when trying to convert from one set of units to another. I saw on an estate agent’s description of a property that the lounge was 4.6 m wide or 7' 97″!! However, it is in miss-interpreting the units that the biggest mistakes take place. The Cardiff council had to apologise to the public when the 40 m high (131 ft) decorated Christmas tree they had ordered from China was less than a third of the desired size as the manufacturer had read the size as 40 ft. While model building I always try to work in metric units but even here it is so easy to mix up millimetres and centimetres. I know that under the SI Units centimetres are not a standard, but working in millimetres does produce such large numbers all the time. My only advice to anyone suffering from unit problems is to use the old adage “measure twice, cut once”. Then, at least you have the chance to spot measurement errors before making a serious mistake. We have four interesting construction articles all of which outline the history of the full size craft. The article on Hovellers and Lightermen explains the important role played by small coastal smacks and describes the construction of a 1/24 scale model of Marie of Salcombe. MV Stadt Koln is a very unusual craft built to impress Adolf Hitler. Both the 1/50 scale model and full sized craft are impressive in their quality and design. The article on MTB 10 again gives an insight into the history of this craft and then explains

MPBA UPDATE

The 2016 NEC and AGM meetings were held this year at the Holiday Inn Express on the outskirts of Bedford on Sunday 27th November. Mick Fields was in the chair for both meetings. The NEC (National Executive Committee) meeting took place in the morning and the committee members submitted their reports. There were two pieces of news that the committee were pleased to receive – one, that the Secretary’s vacant position had an applicant, and, on a similar note, the Treasurer’s position also had an applicant. As both of these positions had been looked after on a ‘caretaker’ basis for the last twelve months, the committee were delighted that these two pivotal positions would be filled. On a similar vein there was a change of Webmaster with Peter Hanington standing down and Andy Coburn put forward for the role. The committee was saddened to hear that Elayne Nex, Editor of Propwash for many years was unwell. All present wished her well. Bill Hornby, Membership Secretary, introduced the beginning of a new range of MPBA merchandise for attendees to purchase. These included pens, badges, T-shirts and ties. After lunch the Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place with members present. There was good news from the committee. They were pleased to report an increase in membership, the first since 2012. Following work done by Peter Revill when he was acting Treasurer, the committee was advised, and pleased to agree, that membership fees could be reduced for 2017. He indicated that Full and Countrywide members would pay £20, Seniors (60+) and Disabled £15, Juniors (under 18) and non-boaters £10. The discount of 25% for more than one member at the same address also applies. Wearing his Insurance representative hat, Peter advised the meeting that he was in regular contact with our insurance broker to make sure that our cover was at the best price and tailored to model boating needs. The Hydroplane section is currently having difficulty with their present venue and has approached the MPBA for assistance with costs for a new purpose constructed site. Further details were requested. The election of officers took place with the incumbents being put forward and duly elected. The committee were delighted to welcome Linda Buonaiuto to the position of General Secretary, and Glynis Fields as Treasurer. President Tony Willett relinquished his caretaker role as General Secretary and Peter Revill, after a spell as Acting Treasurer remained in his role as Insurance

Representative. New committee members also included Mick Buonaiuto representing Circuit Racing and Steve Poyser representing Tethered Hydroplanes. The only committee role remaining vacant is that of National Press Officer. The MPBA was established in 1924 with the simple aim of promoting model boating as a hobby. The Association is affiliated to the Sport and Recreation Alliance, Naviga and iMBRA. Membership includes Civil Liability Insurance. For further information visit www.mpba.org.uk

SS SHIELDHALL

The Steamship Shieldhall is Britain’s largest working steamship and is berthed on the Solent in Southampton. Launched in 1955 she was used as a sludge carrier with facilities to carry passengers in the Clyde and Solent until 1985 when she was retired. A group of enthusiasts prevented her from going to the scrapyard and they formed the preservation society ran by volunteers enabling the public to see and travel on a large steam powered vessel for generations to come. The program of sailing in 2017 has been published and consists of 24 day cruise excursions in and around the Solent and Poole. The program for public sailings are from Saturday 27th May to Sunday 17th September. To view all the sailings please visit www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk

LIFEBOAT RETIRES

One of the most photographed operational lifeboats in the UK was finally retired on the 12th November. The 47’ Tyne Lifeboat City of Sheffield has been stationed at the end of Poole quay for 15 years adjacent to the lift bridge and served the Poole harbour area, one of the largest harbours in the UK. During her spell of duty at Poole she was launched 550 times and rescued over 600 people. She will be replaced by a D Class high speed inflatable boat with all weather support lifeboats from adjacent stations at Swanage and Yarmouth. There are only 4 remaining operational 47’ Tyne Class lifeboats in the UK, this class is being replaced by the modern Shannon class lifeboat.
