JetPower 2016 We hop across to mainland Europe for the biggest annual jet extravaganza
A
fter a somewhat extended journey over to Germany caused firstly by fog and then a technical delay with the aircraft, it was a pleasure to finally arrive at the picturesque hilltop airfield site of the JetPower show, which looks down on the nearby town of Bad Neunahr-Arweiler. With Germany sweltering under the same late season heatwave that we were enjoying in the UK the conditions on site were very different to that seen over the last few years, with the highest temperature I can remember and parched, rock hard ground as opposed to the mud and water we had got used to. Although the weather for the show days themselves did not continue this very warm theme, Friday and most of Saturday were very pleasant, with warm temperatures and light winds, this unfortunately coming to an end on Saturday evening, with heavy rain just before the night flying was due to start, resulting in the cancellation of this and the traditional firework display that normally rounds off the evening.
Luckily, and no doubt due to the previously very dry conditions, this rain did not affect the last day of the show, with the ground underfoot and in the car parks remaining firm. Sunday dawned rather murky and overcast, but progressively improved during the day, with no interruptions for rain.
Spectacular Models
As usual the flying went on non-stop during the event, with a plentiful mix of both sport and scale jets taking to the air. With many of the top pilots from around the world taking part there were some superb performances, with the highlights of the show perhaps being the flight of four of the very large Tomahawk F-86 Sabre’s and the Elster Jet Team and their new and extremely impressive Su30MKK models. The Sabres performed a superb formation flight, perhaps the most impressive section being where three of the models held a close formation and the fourth Sabre rolled around them, some superb pilot-
ing skills being evident with these very large but light aircraft. The Su-30s were certainly not lacking in power; these all composite models having twin 220 Newton turbines with vectored thrust nozzles, whilst weighing a mere 24.5 kg, yet being 3500 mm (138") long with a wingspan of 2200 mm (87"). With the resulting light wing loading and amazing power-to-weight ratio, the Sukhoi’s were able to demonstrate some incredible aerobatic manoeuvres, these being nicely illustrated by the twin smoke trails behind each model when the on-board smoke systems were active. As well as having the ability to perform prototypical manoeuvres such as the renowned ‘Cobra’, the ease with which the models could hover was deeply impressive, as was the vertical climb out of the hover, with the models seeming to continue to accelerate until they reached the limit of vision. Having said this, there were times during this particular display where certain manoeuvres were carried out
With 2 x 220N vectored thrust turbines on board this Sukhoi Su-30 had seemingly unlimited power! A very impressive display with the ability to accelerate away from the vertical hover

that would have not been allowed at a UK show, this being rather surprising given the focus on flightline safety that was evident during the rest of the event, possibly the fact that the crowd is behind a high safety fence makes these manoeuvres acceptable in Germany. Also very impressive was the ever increasing performance of the latest EDF models, with some of the highlights being modern glass gliders utilising the pop-up EDF systems, which allow extension and retraction in a matter of seconds, as well as a large airliner that was more than adequately powered by its four EDF units. Sadly there were a couple of unfortunate crashes this year, the most notable being the destruction of Frank Schroders’ enormous 1:2 scale Saab Gripen, which broke up in the air shortly into its display routine. This model, like most others at the show, was being flown in a very safe manner and in the defined
airspace for the event, so the remnants of the airframe impacted a great distance from the public, in fact being beyond the far fence some 100 plus metres from the crowd safety fence. (Watch the video at https://youtu. be/7hU0EAl3DZU?t=14 )
NEW PRODUCTS
As per previous JetPower show articles, this report will focus on the new products seen, and it can be assumed that these are all available from the supplier at the time of writing unless otherwise stated. To make finding information as simple as possible the company listings has been split into Aircraft, Turbines, EDF Systems, Accessories and Electronics categories.
AIRCRAFT:
Airworld have sold a number of their large 1:4 scale F-104 Starfighters over the last couple of years, so they obviously decided that an
even bigger version would be worth tooling up for, showing the fuselage plug for an enormous 1:3 scale version, which took up most of the length of their large stand, the model having an overall fuselage length of 5660 mm (223"), with a wingspan of a mere 2220 mm (87"). Expected to weigh less than 50 kg all-up, and scheduled to be in production by late 2017, the model will require a turbine of around 400 Newtons thrust, and as might be expected is to be produced in limited numbers, as there are not too many model flying fields where such a model can be flown, not to mention the issues involved in transporting such a huge model. Also displayed was a full plug for a new 1:4 scale MiG-21, the prototype expected to be flying by mid-2017. With a wingspan of 1800 mm (71") and length of 3980 mm (157"), the MiG is expected to weigh less than 25 kg with fuel and requires a turbine of around 200 Newtons thrust.
