Jet Power 2015 With a trend towards even larger airframes and engines, RCJI goes in-depth at Europe’s premier Jet show

ith the 2014 show having been badly affected by heavy rain, so much so that the last day saw no flying taking place, and cars having to be parked on the runway as the usual parking areas had been flooded, it was with some concern that we left the UK to travel over to the 2015 show, with rain falling on the site as we boarded our flight to Cologne airport. Upon arrival at the small airfield that hosts the event it was clear to see that the weather had certainly been less than good, as part of the grass areas that had seen heavy vehicle movements whilst the show marquees were assembled had been badly churned up. This year however, this marked the end of the very poor weather, with just a few light showers late on the Saturday afternoon and evening, the rest of the event being blessed with plenty of sunshine as well as somewhat overcast but

dry conditions on the Sunday afternoon, in fact for much of the time it was t-shirt weather. After the weather related problems of the previous year the layout of the event had been reconsidered, and whereas in earlier years the two main buildings had been situated to the right and left of the central flying/viewing/food stall area, this year both buildings were positioned to the left, one being placed alongside the other, with just a short and easily bridged gap between the two. This certainly made movement between the two buildings much faster and easier, whilst allowing even more room for visitors to move around the main part of the flightline. It also meant that far less of the airfield suffered from the attentions of the heavy vehicles that are required to assemble the temporary show buildings. There was no single theme to the show this

year, although once again sport jets seemed to dominate, whilst there was a continued movement towards even larger airframes and engines. One element that has seemed to disappear over the years is the previous regular appearance of unique scratch built models, as the general movement has been towards the flying becoming almost exclusively trade oriented. Those UK modellers with memories of the old Sandown Park show will recall this format well. As per usual, this report will focus on the new products seen, and it can be assumed that these are all available from the supplier at the time of writing unless otherwise stated. To make finding information as simple as possible the company listings have been split into aircraft, turbines, EDF systems, accessories and electronics categories.

Global Jet Club together with Final Modellbau had a nice display of Jet Legend models including the new PNP F9F Cougar

For large models and drone/UAV use JetCat have the new Pro range of turbines with 300 to 550 Newtons of thrust

Aircraft ____________________________________ Aerobertics.be were showing two new models from Pilot-RC, the first of these being a smaller version of their Dolphin trainer/sport jet, called, logically enough, Mini Dolphin. This all-wood model, covered in film, has a wingspan of 71" (1803 mm) and is designed for 60 Newton turbines, being due for release in late 2015. Also expected to be available late in the year is the new and very pretty all wood Gulfstream G650 business jet, which has a wingspan of 102" (2600 mm) and requires two 60 Newton turbines to power its 17 kg dry weight airframe. The model can be supplied with or without servos and air retracts. www.aerobertics.be Airworld were displaying two new models on their large stand, the first of these being a very nice 1:5th scale Saab Draken, with a wingspan of 76" (1940 mm) and length of 112" (2840 mm), requiring a turbine

with 160 Newtons thrust, and available now, it being nice to see a more unusual jet being modelled to this quality. The second model will become available around March 2016, this being a 1:3.75 scale Pilatus PC-21 designed around the Jetcat SPT5 turboprop unit, and having a wingspan of 95" (2400 mm) and length of 118" (3000 mm). www.airworld.online.de

ARG were showing their new Sirocco Sport jet, which has been developed as a high performance model that can be flown from small flying sites, having a landing speed as low as 35 km/h when built lightly and fitted with a 100 Newton turbine – the overall range being 80-120 Newtons. The Sirocco is a very attractive airframe, having a wingspan of 79" (1990 mm) and length of 84" (2130 mm), with a dry weight of around 9.3 kg, and available in either standard fibreglass construction or in the optional Carbon Competition version. www.argweb.eu

Aviation Design again had a very large stand, which was certainly needed to allow the display of their new and huge 1:2.5 scale Nimbus glider, which is all of 415" (10560 mm) wingspan, being 124" (3150 mm) long with a weight of around 24 kg! The example on the stand was fitted with a Merlin 100 turbine installed on an Aviation Design produced turbine retract unit but had not yet been flown with this fitted. Also shown were examples of many of the other models this long established company produces. www.adjets.com C & C Models showed an unusual sport jet, the MB339S, this being based on a lightened and modified MB339 airframe, produced in Italy, with a 106" (2700 mm) wingspan/length, and designed for 160 Newton turbines, weighing 15 kg. The model is supplied in a white gelcoat or Frecce Tricolori finish, with other colours schemes available to order. www.cmodels.it
