JIMMY JIMMY…

Just as this issue was going to print we heard of the sad loss of Jimmy Storey. Mr oOple has gone to shoot amazing action pictures on the great R/C track in the sky and our hobby has lost one of its true ambassadors for fun, racing and amazing photography. Now while I had no direct friendship with Jimmy, we did have a professional relationship, and often chatted on Facebook (about multi rotor builds and filming of late). He even shot some of the action pics and the cover for an issue of RRCi a couple of years ago, and his talent for capturing R/C in a way that truly inspires people was all too clear, just from the 10 or so images he sent me. He could, and regularly did, capture in a single image what used to take me a series to do so. That folder of review pics made me look at action photography in a very different way and really made me up my game. He instilled in me the thought to always strive to go one better than your previous best, to not just freeze the action dead, but take a snapshot of a moment in time that conveys all the speed, drama and wonder that we all feel running and racing our R/C vehicles, whatever scale they are, and from whatever era they may come from. Jimmy was one of life’s individuals and I respect him for that. Conforming is easy, being yourself and sticking up for things you are truly passionate about is the much harder path to follow, and in this respect Jimmy shone very brightly. Some may call him a ‘character ‘ but all that knew him knew he was just being ‘Jimmy’. R/C is about having fun, not talking it all too seriously and putting smiles on people’s faces. Perhaps those with influence within its ranks should remember that more often, then perhaps we may see true growth again, part of the legacy that people like Jimmy leave for us to propagate. He was very good friends with some of my past and present RRCi team, and many of my close industry contacts. I know how much his passing has affected many of you and RRCi would like to dedicate this issue to him and offer our deepest sympathy to Vicky, his family and anyone who knew him on this huge spinning globe we call home. We hope oOple.com continues to remain an important part of the worldwide R/C scene, as do the race series and everything that Jimmy stood for within the hobby. RIP Inspirational Dude… Ps. or those of you that haven’t read my Tamiya Lowrider Pumpkin review in the December 2014 issue, you will be surprised to know that I wasn’t always a Tamiya fan. I used to think if it doesn’t bash and survive it wasn’t worth my time. If you had told me then that in a few years I would have a

collection dating back to 1986, I would have called you crazy! But here I am with two original Blackfoots (or would that be Blackfeet?), an original Clod, three minis, three F1’s, a Superhornet, TT01, TT02, two Lunchboxes, two DT02s and a Wild Willy, etc. (hopefully my missus doesn’t read this – might send her a copy Ed!).

Obviously I have caught the Tamiya bug, and am currently searching for my two ‘unicorns’: the Street Devil and of course a Blazin’ Blazer. But back to my point, my first Iconic meet at Snetterton introduced me to a few Tamiya’s I hadn’t seen before. One being an original Willy’s Wheeler! This thing was so cool! It was a car and did

s ‘newer’ wheeler wheelies! What more could I want!? Iconic RC’s own Rich ‘Biggus’ Armstrong was piloting it and I couldn’t stop watching it. Until he broke it! I had a blast checking out all the other Tamiyas and racing the few that I had at the time. But once I got home, I was on the forums and auction sites trying

to find a wheeler as well as a few others I had seen that day. The search was painful to say the least. When I would be lucky enough to find one, the price was way more than I wanted to give at the moment. But the search continued for months. But I never found ‘the one’. Now fast forward to February 2014…

Oooh I Want That… Tamiya had all their new releases out at the Nuremburg Toy Fair. The Ed, who is always on site for this event, quickly posted some pics of the new releases. Knowing that Andy Moore and I are huge Tamiya fans, he sent us the Tamiya ones first. That’s when I saw it, the Tamiya
