Welcome to the October issue of Sewing World!

Emma Horrocks sw@traplet.com

Leanne Smith sw@traplet.com

As we turn the corner in the seasons this month, we see the leaves beginning to fall from the trees, feel a little nip in the air and the nights slowly drawing in (and so making our sewing evenings that little bit longer!). This month we have some autumn treats for you to make. The pretty patched Hot Water Bottle Cover will keep you nice and snug during chilly October nights and its hand quilting adds that extra warmth and softness. The appliquéd Cafetière Cosy is great fun and will keep your coffee pot steaming hot, plus it can be personalised making it a superb gift for a friend. Exquisite and sumptuous – the embroidered Handbag Mirror uses layers of organza, silk and an innovative cutting technique to create a very delicate framed mirror. And for relaxed mornings at home, the Kimono Style Dressing Gown is perfect for lounging around and is also a perfect partner to the lovely vintage style pyjamas pattern from the September issue of Sewing World. But, we can’t quite leave the brights of the summer behind us just yet; the cheery Mix & Match Triangles Quilt is a great small quilt project and also a handy stash buster too! And this month’s cover star is the cute Hexie Frame Purse which would add a splash of sun to any grey day. Plus, we have some new technique tutorials starting this month; Patchwork for Beginners and Hand Embroidery Masterclass which take it one stitch at a time, helping you to build upon your sewing skills and knowledge. If dressmaking is your passion, the 16 page pattern supplement offers some fabulous special buys Simplicity.

Readers’ Makes of the Month! Our Readers’ Make of the Month winner for October is Barbara Jukes – who wins a box of Mettler Poly Sheen threads – 100% Trilobal Polyester threads, perfect for all you sewing needs! Barbara says – “I’ve been sewing and making crafts all my life, but having recently retired I now have the time to indulge myself and really enjoy my hobby and learn new skills. I’m learning to quilt and machine embroider and I get loads of inspiration from the magazine. I’m currently recuperating from a serious illness so it’s been wonderful to have something to occupy myself. I made the knitting needle case for my sister who knits for a charity that provides garments and teddies for premature babies. I’ve now got to make more for her knitting group, but I don’t mind as I know they are appreciated.” Thank you Barbara what a pretty needle case, I’m not surprised you’ve had requests for more! I hope your sewing projects continue to help you through your recovery.

Send us some pictures of YOUR makes and you too could be featured in the Makes of the Month column and win a lovely prize!

PROJECT Hexie Framed Purse

Hexagon

Frame Purse

MATERIALS

DESIGNED BY JUDITH HOLLIES

TO CUT

c

See pattern sheet for pattern pieces – Trace and cut 64 hexagon papers. Hole punching them – makes for easier removal after sewing! (2) – Trace and cut 64 fabric hexagons. The fabric shapes are at least ¼" (0.75cm) bigger than the hexagon papers (3) – Cut 2 purse front/back from lining fabric seam allowances are included (1) – Cut 2 purse front/back from Vilene (1) – Cut 2, 9" x 13.5" (23cm x 34.5cm) from Vilene

d

TO SEW

1 a

Fold the next edge over and bring needle from front to back again at the corner. This creates a large tacking stitch from corner one to corner two.

Position the paper in the centre on wrong side of fabric.

f

16

Fold over next edge (anticlockwise), overlapping the corner. Push needle back through the corner to the right side.

Using the English Paper Piecing (EPP) method, baste your hexagons as follows: Thread a hand sewing needle, single length with good knot on the end.

e

b

Fold over one edge of fabric towards the paper, bring needle from front to back near to a corner (so that knot is showing on right side).

OCTOBER 2015

Hexie Framed Purse_SWOCT15.indd 16

Continue folding over and tacking until all corners are anchored and the hexie is fully basted. Snip thread leaving a tail.

1 metal purse frame 6" x 2.5" (15.5cm x 6cm)

A variety of cotton scraps at least 3" (7.5cm) square, enough for 64 hexagons

Thin paper

1 long quarter (25cm) cotton for lining

25cm Sew-in Vilene

505 Basting spray

Strong Liquid Fabric glue (I used ‘Crafter’s Pick Extremely Tacky’)

Cotton bud/nail polish remover (for removing glue from frame)

Dylon Spray Starch (optional)

GOOD TO KNOW •

Use ¼" seam allowance unless advised otherwise.

Measurements assume cuts from 44" (112cm) wide bolts.

Finished purse approx. 8" x 7" (20.5cm x 18cm).

If you have a Sizzix Big Shot you can cut the hexagon papers using die 659835 (1" hexagon) and the fabric hexagons using die 659834 (1.25" hexagon).

Project Hexie Framed Purse

2

Layout 32 hexagons as shown in diagram. Sew together in five rows by placing right sides together and using a Whip stitch.

3

Sew the rows together, again using a Whip stitch. You will need to angle each row to match up the corresponding edges.

5

6

Pin the purse template on top of your work and trim away excess. Repeat steps 2-6 for other panel.

7

Place front and back right sides together and sew around sides and bottom edges, leaving three top edges open.

4

Press the wrong side of the panel (especially the outer edges) before carefully removing the tacking stitches and papers (use a stitch ripper or scissors to flip out the hole-punched papers).

Tip:

Spray starch the wrong side of the panel and press well to secure the outer edges.

18

October 2015

Hexie Framed Purse_SWOCT15.indd 18

8

Box the corners as follows: pull fabric apart at the corners and align the side seam to the bottom seam. Measure and mark 1" (2.5cm) horizontally from the point.

9

Sew along this line, using a reverse stitch to start and finish. Trim away the excess, leaving ½" (1.5cm) seam allowance. Repeat for the other corner. Turn right side out.

Spray baste hexie panel to the 9" x 13.5" (23cm x 34.5cm) pieces of sew-in Vilene and quilt as desired.

10

Spray baste the remaining Vilene front/back to each of the lining pieces. Pin with right sides together and sew as for outer purse in steps 7-9, this time leaving a 2" (5cm) gap in the middle of the bottom edge for turning. Don’t turn right side out yet!

11

Place the outer purse inside the lining so that right sides are together, aligning side and top seams. Pin and sew around top edges, taking care to pivot in the side seams.

12 13

Pull purse right side out through gap in the lining. Using scissors or knitting needle, carefully push out all corners and seams, especially around the top edges. Hand or machine stitch the gap closed, push lining down into purse and press well.

14

Top stitch around the top edges using an 1⁄8" (0.5cm) seam allowance.

15

Insert glue into one side of the frame and leave for a few minutes to go tacky.

16

Align the side hinges with the side seams and carefully insert the top edge of the purse into the frame. Use small pointed scissors to push the fabric well into the frame. If you get glue on the frame, leave it to dry before scrapping off with your nail. (Nail polish remover on a cotton bud is useful for removing any stubborn bits of glue!)
