Yosemite National Park, California, USA
Known for its granite domes, sheer cliffs, waterfalls and soaring sequoias, Yosemite National Park is a veritable playground for nature lovers. The beauty of this landscape, including the awe-inspiring Mariposa Grove of 500 giant sequoias, was the inspiration for the foundation of national parks. Yosemite Valley is where most visitors go, with the world famous Half Dome and El Capitan – a 900 metre rock face that featured in the documentary Free Solo – the main attractions. There are many great hiking trails in the park, taking you to the rock monuments and to impressive waterfalls. A real hidden gem, the Hetch Hetchy Valley is spectacular, with pristine lakes, towering peaks, rugged canyons and thundering waterfalls. The place to stay is the Ahwahnee, an elegant lodge that has hosted queens and presidents and has just reopened after a renovation.
