Editor’s Letter
To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.
— BILL BRYSON
That first time exploring the klongs of Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River in a long-tail boat was mind-blowing. As was exploring the ancient Citadel in Hue, Vietnam, giving alms to the monks in the early dawn light in Luang Prabang in Laos, and warily watching prehistoric-looking komodo dragons on the island of Rinca in Indonesia. Asia is a kaleidoscope of colour, a fabulous feast for every sense and a spicy mix of culture, nature and tradition.

Wild ASIA
Asia has a lot of incredible cities, but for many people, it is the wildlife and natural beauty that appeals
After huffing and puffing up hundreds of stairs, pausing to watch dusky langurs and crab-eating macaques cavorting in the trees, we descend into a cavern to see the most spectacular sight … an exquisite sala (pavilion) built on the sandy floor, rays of sunlight bathing the gold building as if in a Hollywood spotlight.
The sala, in Phraya Nakhon Cave, is located in Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park about an hour south of Hua Hin, in Thailand. Built by King Chulalongkorn in 1890, even just getting there is fun, involving a boat, a stilted fishing village, a beautiful beach, and not forgetting those steps. The cave and its intricate hidden gem are worth every step.
Phraya Nakhon Cave, ThailandMonkey around
Orangutans are endangered and seeing them with your own eyes is unbelievably special. The word orangutan means ‘person of the forest’ in Malaysia which is extremely apt as these primates share a whopping 96.4 per cent of our genes and are extremely intelligent. To be sure of seeing them visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sandakan, Borneo. This incredible place protects, rescues and releases orangutans back into the wild, with visitors able to watch them swinging through the forest on vines and ropes. Unforgettable. You might spot wild orangutan in Kinabatangan River, as well as pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, gibbons and a whole lot more.
We Recommend
PREMIUM BORNEO IN DEPTH
This 12-day Intrepid Travel itinerary uncovers the natural wonders of Borneo, as well as uncovering its fascinating culture, history and traditions. Venture into the jungles of Sabah and Sarawak, visiting the Sepilok Orangutan Centre in Sandakan, and into Batang Ai National Park to learn about the Iban way of life.

In Sumatra, Indonesia, critically endangered Sumatran orangutans can be found in Gunung Leuser National Park, also home to rare Sumatran tigers, lemurs and leopards.
There be dragons
In Indonesia, go back in time to see the world’s largest lizard. The Komodo dragon is an intimidating creature, growing up to three metres long. They can be found in Komodo National Park on the islands of Komodo, Flores, Rinca and Padar. Our Travel Advisors say you will need to do a tour as the rangers are trained to keep you and the dragons safe. Elsewhere around Komodo National Park, the snorkelling and diving is spectacular, with corals and a vast array of sea creatures found in azure blue water.
Japan has many multi-day walks that take you through time, past historic shrines and temples, staying in traditional ryokans and marvelling at truly beautiful scenery. The Nakasendo Trail takes modern day pilgrims from Tokyo to Kyoto, with some sections just as they were in the days of the Samurai. The Kumano Kodo is a network of pilgrimage trails that take you through the Kansai region linking three Kumano shrines, Hongu Taisha, Hayatama Taisha and Nachi Taisha. A lesser known but equally beautiful trail is the Kunisaki Trail in Kyushu. Starting in Usa and finishing in Himeshima, it takes about six days.
Bhutan is also on the map for hikers, with several walks serving up a visual feast. A hike up to the sacred Taktsang Monastery, known as Tiger’s Nest, is a one of a kind experience, with the monastery clinging to the side of a cliff at 3120 metres. One of Bhutan’s most sacred sites, it is thought to have been one of the resting places of the Guru Ringpoche. Also in Bhutan, the Trans Bhutan Trail reopened in 2022 after a hiatus of six decades. This 403-kilometre trail runs from Haa in the west of Bhutan to Trashigang in the east.
On two feet
Our Travel Advisors know that walking tours have skyrocketed in popularity in recent years and Asia is no different.
In Borneo, the hike up Mt Kinabalu in Kinabalu National Park is a challenging ascent, trekkers rising just after midnight to climb up into the clouds to the 4095-metre summit. The park is a treasure trove of flora and fauna, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ride the rails
Riding trains is a wonderful way of seeing the countryside and in Asia, there are many routes to consider, including luxurious options such as India’s Maharajahs' Express and the new Vietage Luxury Train in Vietnam.
For regal grandeur and olde world luxury, the Maharajahs' Express is India’s most opulent luxury train, operating a number of routes that journey to some of India’s most impressive and fascinating destinations. The three-night Treasures of India takes you from Delhi to Agra, Ranthambore, Jaipur and back to Delhi, while the sixnight options include The Heritage of India, The Indian Splendour and The Indian Panorama. There are four cabin types, from deluxe to the Presidential Suite, which has a living room, two bedrooms and ensuites as well as an exclusive 24hour personal valet.
Vietnam has a luxury train offering, with The Vietage introduced by Anantara in 2022. The short journey rekindles the romance of rail travel as it travels between Da Nang and the sandy shores of Quy Nhon, taking you through the changing scenery of Central Vietnam. The train departs Da Nang Railway Station near Hoi An each morning, and makes the return journey from Quy Nhon each evening.
Snow time
Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, is a frosted wonderland with world-class powder skiing, snowboarding and hot springs to entice visitors. Our Travel Advisors recommend Club Med to make your snow holiday as convenient as possible, thanks to its all-inclusive policy.
Club Med has four properties at three Hokkaido resorts, all offering that deep, deep Hokkaido powder. Take your pick of Club Med Tomamu, Club Med Sahoro, or the most recent addition, Club Med Kiroro Peak. A second property, Club Med Kiroro Grand, will open at Kiroro in December 2023.

Peak times in HONG KONG
From the tried and true to the new and exciting, it’s time to renew your acquaintance with the delights of Hong Kong.
Riding the historic Peak Tram up to the top of Victoria Peak never gets old. Nor does chugging over the harbour on the Star Ferry, shopping at the Stanley Markets or enjoying the high life at one of the city’s glamourous five-star hotels. But Hong Kong is so much more than that, with new and exciting developments that Australians have yet to experience.
The tram is a fun way to go up The Peak. The view of Hong Kong is amazing from up there. The shopping is fantastic – the Ladies Market is great. Some tips – visit Aqua for amazing cocktails and food, take the ferry between Hong Kong and Kowloon, have yum cha every day, and upgrade your hotel to include Club Lounges.
Jessica Taylor, Travel Associates Hawthorne, QLDExplore the Neighbourhoods
Hong Kong is made up of a mosaic of neighbourhoods that are all different and authentic. Take the emerging West Kowloon for example, which is the international arts hub of Hong Kong, along with historic buildings and a thriving dining scene. We cannot wait to visit M+, the jewel in the West Kowloon Cultural District, incorporating 20th- and 21stcentury visual art, design and architecture, and moving images. It is Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture. West Kowloon is also home to the spectacular new Hong Kong Palace Museum, which has nine galleries with more than 900 priceless treasures from the Palace Museum in Beijing. The Xiqu Centre is another West Kowloon treasure, showcasing world-class productions of Cantonese opera and other regional forms of Chinese opera (xiqu).
A Taste of the Arts
Hong Kong is the arts capital of Asia with M+ and the Hong Kong Palace Museum adding to the already deep arts scene clustered in and around various neighbourhoods across the city. Tai Kwun, a centre for heritage and arts in Central, cleverly entwines the past with the modern. The site comprises three declared monuments of Hong Kong – the former Central Police Station, Central Magistracy, and Victoria Prison – along with the new JC Contemporary art museum and JC Cube theatre. Experience PMQ in Central, a thriving hub with more than 100 young ‘create-preneurs’ with design studio shops, pop-up stores and a range of dining options, and also check out the murals alongside the industrial history and heritage of The Mills in Tsuen Wan.

Whether you’re after street eats or Michelin-starred dining, we agree that Hong Kong is one of the world’s great culinary cities. It is the best of East meets West dining experiences and while Cantonese food forms the backbone of the dining scene, you’ll find the gamut of international cuisine. Dive into one of Hong Kong’s famous dim sum eateries, and definitely taste test the offerings at dai pai dongs –traditional street food stalls serving up Cantonese dishes.
At the other end of the scale are the Michelin-star recipients, with 78 restaurants adorned with one, two or three stars in the 2023 Michelin Guide. Ta Vie was elevated to three stars –one of seven with that accolade. Chef Hideaki Sato believes in keeping his food “pure, simple, and seasonal.” Other three-star restaurants include T’ang Court at The Langham, L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon, Forum, Caprice, Sushi Shikon and 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo – Bombana. There are 13 restaurants with two stars, including Rùn, which was elevated from one star. Mora restaurant was recognised with one Michelin Green Star, joining Amber and Roganic.
We Recommend THE LANGHAM HONG KONG
Located in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, The Langham offers refined rooms and stylish suites, with guests of Executive Rooms and Suites enjoying complimentary access to The Langham Club The Langham also offers world-class bars and restaurants, including three-Michelin starred T’ang Court. No stay at The Langham is complete without a treatment at Chuan Spa.

Discover the Great Outdoors
While it’s best known for its skyscrapers, there’s so much more to Hong Kong than its urban landscape. In fact, more than 40 per cent of Hong Kong is green fields, mountains, protected nature reserves and thriving marine parks, as well as over 260 islands, many of them uninhabited. The islands, easily accessible by ferry, provide a look into the laid-back life that is such a contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city, as well as offering a range of outdoor adventures.
Visit Lantau Island and take the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car to hike up the 268 steps to the magnificent Big Buddha, and if the legs are feeling it, explore Po Lin Monastery, and Ngong Ping Village, which are also on the plateau overlooking the island. Also on
Lantau Island you can do a surf or stand-up paddle boarding lesson on Pui O beach with Treasure Island Hong Kong. On the island of Cheung Chau, stroll around the waterfront with its plethora of fishing boats and seafood restaurants, or learn to windsurf at one of the beaches. Po Toi Island, Hong Kong’s southernmost island, is a scenic escape from the busy nature of the city. Admire the unusual rock formations, ancient carvings and idyllic landscapes. On Lamma Island, shop for fresh herbs at an organic farm, while on Peng Chau, discover a little island where time has stood still. Hong Kong Island also has a variety of hiking trails including the challenging Dragon’s Back, a four-hour hike with incredible scenic views.
We Recommend THE PENINSULA HONG KONG
The legendary “Grande Dame of the Far East” is the flagship property of Peninsula Hotels, offering the perfect blend of the best Eastern and Western hospitality in classical grandeur and timeless elegance. The 300 guest rooms including 52 suites are opulent and luxuriously appointed, and there are eight restaurants and lounges, including the two Michelin-starred restaurants –Gaddi’s and Spring Moon.

A country with Seoul
South Korea has 5000 years of history and culture, but it also has incredible natural beauty and is an exciting and surprising country embracing the future.
The new and the very, very old live in harmony in the metropolis of Seoul. Established 600 years ago as South Korea’s first planned city, it has since undergone dramatic changes, forming an intriguing blend that is reflected in its architecture, museums, festivals, and local traditions.
This contrast is also seen in its residents. Koreans respect tradition, but are also open to change, developing their own ‘K-style’ such as ‘K-pop’.
South Korea’s traditions
In South Korea, centuries-old family traditions are still passed down from generation to generation.
Andong is a city where tradition is alive and well. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once visited by Queen Elizabeth, who admired the Korean Seowons (Confucian Academy) architecture.
We love that Andong is one of the places where you can have a unique experience like staying in a traditional hanok in Andong Hahoe Folk Village, where people have been living for 500 years. The village has many original preserved structures from the 15th century. A special experience is to stay overnight at the family clans’ original manor homes, such as that of the Ryu clan. They will host you with utmost respect, following the custom and traditions of the region.
Hidden gem:
TEMPLE STAYS
Staying in a Buddhist temple is an unforgettable experience. See what life is like, practice meditation, participate in Buddhist ceremonies and cultural activities at one of the many Buddhist temples offering temple stays throughout the country. One of the best is Gogulsa near Gyeongju, where apart from tea ceremonies, Buddhist chanting and meditation, you can learn the Buddhist martial art of sunmudo.
Golgulsa Temple, Gyeongju-si Andong Hahoe Folk VillageA world of wellness
South Korea has a long tradition of meditation and contemplation due to its Buddhist heritage. Healing and mental health were an important part of life for nobles hundreds of years ago and is equally so in modern culture.
South Korea’s unique wellness experiences include various Zen meditation at Buddhist temples, ‘forest therapy’ designed to calm the body, and invigorating herbal tea and beauty spa treatments incorporating Korean medicinal ingredients such as the country’s coveted sixyear-old red ginseng.
Among them, South Korea’s unique Jjimjilbang bathhouses offer a variety of wellness experiences in one, including hot tubs and saunas, tea therapy and meditation. Visitors can also snack on Jjimjilbang foods such as Sikhye (sweet rice drink), and hard-boiled ‘sauna eggs’.

South Korea on a plate
South Korea's diverse cuisine, including Korean barbecue, kimchi, bibimbap, and street food, has gained immense popularity globally, making it an attractive destination for foodies.
Hanjeongsik is a lavish presentation of traditional Korean cuisine, where many dishes are served together to showcase different ingredients, cooking methods and colours (typically the five colours of nature which are red, blue, yellow, black/brown and white). It also aims to stimulate all five senses, and all five tastes. There are traditional Hanjeongsik restaurants but also creative reinterpretations and fine dining options including Mosu, which offers a contemporary experience.
In South Korea you’ll find a tasty array of street food found in places like Gwangjang Market, Myeongdong, Namdaemun Market that dates back to the 1400s, and Sindangdong Tteokbokki Town where Korea’s number one street food, Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes cooked in gochujang) came from. Other must tries are Hotteok (stuffed pancake) and Eomuk (fish cake).
Scenic splendours
In contrast to its bustling cities, South Korea boasts beautiful natural scenery, from the mountains that cover over 70 per cent of its landmass to the secluded islands, beaches and national parks. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons offering a variety of experiences year-round.
Spring in South Korea brings with it cherry blossoms, azaleas and forsythias. Many flower festivals take place around the country, but it’s easy to see the blooms without the crowds, strolling through the park or on a hike through the mountains or countryside. Not to mention, weather conditions from late March to May are ideal for outdoor activities.
The changing of the leaves in September to late November marks the arrival of the cooler autumn
weather. Hues of red, orange and yellow blanket the landscape and provide the perfect backdrop for touring the country’s palaces, temples and national parks.
For hiking enthusiasts, Jeju Island shouldn’t be missed. The 425km-long Olle Trail circles the entire island. The trail consists of 26 routes that traverse the island’s coastal terrain, taking in beaches and volcanic formations including lava tubes and Seongsan Ilchulbong, a volcanic tuff cone and popular location for sunrise viewing. Or there’s Hallasan Mountain, the dormant volcano in the centre of the island, with a multitude of hikes of varying difficulty that offer breathtaking views of Jeju Island below.
With so much to offer, it is time to say annyeonghaseyo (hello) to South Korea.

And no visit to Kyoto is incomplete without savouring the flavors of traditional kaiseki cuisine and participating in a traditional tea ceremony.
Kyoto is a great city. We loved touring around three geisha districts with a local guide whose grandmother was a geisha. This is an absolute must, giving great insight into how it all really works. A tipyou need at least two nights in Kyoto – it is culturally very different to Tokyo and the pace is a lot slower

With no walls and no doors, a stay at Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape, is a Bali immersion like no other.
In partnership with Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape
Buahan Valley Pool Bale"Views from the bales are breathtaking, looking out across the verdant canopy to Bali’s seven mountain peaks."
You might think that staying somewhere with no walls or doors is sleeping under the stars, but at Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape, it is far more than that. It is a ‘naked’ stay in a luxury, boutique resort for adults only that has no walls, no doors, but opens the door to a culturally rewarding, sustainable and luxurious experience that sees guests disconnect from the norm and connect with the land, people and self.
Banyan Tree’s first Escape property, there are just 16 bales (villas) embedded into idyllic jungle north of Ubud, with the Ayung River gurgling alongside and rice paddies cascading down the hill. Views from the bales are breathtaking, looking out across the verdant canopy to Bali’s seven mountain peaks. Choose a Riverside Jungle Pool bale, a Buahan Valley Pool bale or a Rainforest Pool bale, all open to the view – and we mean open – with no walls or doors, just strategically placed veils of fabric. These beautiful retreats have a private pool, open deck and living area, each meticulously crafted using time-honoured Balinese traditions and furnished with locally sourced materials such as ‘ulin’ wood that has been salvaged from old boat yards and known for its strength.
When not sitting on your deck mesmerised by the tendrils of mist dancing around the jungle, or fireflies flitting by, Buahan has a stunning culinary offering. Linger in the Open Kitchen and Living Room, where you can savour the many delights on the 70 per cent plant-based menu curated by Chef Eka Sunarya, sourced from producers within a one-hour drive of the property and with a zerowaste, farm-to-table concept that is honouring long-lost Balinese. Lunches are family-style with Indonesian recipes prepared using ancient wood-fired cooking techniques and served at the communal table in the heart of the restaurant. Dinner focuses on modern plant-based creations in fine dining set-ups. Guests can also be part of the cooking experience, participating in foraging trips in the wild with a Buahan host. The
harvested produce is brought back to the resort for use in the kitchen.
The Botanist Bar located just above the Open Kitchen and Living Room infuses local-grown and foraged natural ingredients and botanicals into its cocktails, mocktails and house-made kombuchas, with unique ingredients from timehonoured Balinese traditions, such as Moringa and Bongkot.
Seek out the secret Hideaway Spots that are dotted on and off this special place, allowing guests to simply sit, meditate or breathe in the jungle air. Buahan also offers a number of immersive experiences including visiting the local Buahan village, doing yoga under the moon, biking down a volcano, or visit a local temple for an enlightenment journey with the local priest.

Buahan – a Banyan Tree Escape allowed me to immerse myself in the Balinese culture and gain understanding of their way of life, all while in the most luxurious environment. The culinary delights that were presented time after time were phenomenal and knowing that everything was locally grown or sourced and sustainable made the experience quite unique.

To see more of Asia on one convenient holiday, explore by sea.
BY SUE WALLACEFrom Japan to Bali and Vietnam to India, cruising in Asia provides a mirror into colourful daily life on some of the world’s busiest sea routes and rivers which are the lifeblood of countries showcasing cities, villages, islands, rich rainforests and tangled jungles. Open sea cruising offers a chance to discover island life and visit many ports with myriad places to see. Or linger on a river cruise,
where you will see villagers at work, fishermen pulling in their catch, children splashing in the shallows, women doing their laundry and tiny boats filled with produce.
Cruising in the Seto Inland Sea and the Sea of Japan is the best way to discover exotic ports and the eclectic and surreal art islands of Japan, known for quirky galleries and mind-blowing installations.
PONANT’s elegant Le Soleal stops at Takamatsu, Hiroshima, Karatsu, Matsue, Kanazawa, Sado-gashima, and Noshiro-Aomori as well as wilderness areas and smaller far-flung ports on the Wonders of Japan cruise.
Cruising in the turquoise waters of the Timor and Java Seas is also popular with port visits including towns in West Timor, Bali, Lombok and Malaysia. Komodo National Park, where pre-historic looking Komodo dragons flash their ribbon-like forked tongues are a drawcard on some of these cruises.
In our opinion, luxury cruise lines including Silversea, Seabourn and Regent Seven Seas Cruises offer excellent itineraries.

The mighty Mekong covers nearly 5000 km and snakes its way through six countries including China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam passing manicured rice paddies, fish farms, fruit orchards, shrines and temples. The Ganges meanders 2525 km through India and Bangladesh – the most fertile and densely populated regions in the world passing riverbank villages and temples where you get a snapshot of daily life along this great river.
A shore thing
Exploring ashore is what it’s all about and in Asia, you are spoilt for choice.
In Japan, many ports offer the perfect mix of cultural attractions, museums, vibrant cities and spectacular natural beauty. Some of the popular cruise ports include Yokohama, Aomori, Hirashima, Hakodate, Kobe (Osaka), Nagasaki, Okinawa, Otaru and Shimizu.
Mekong river, Luang Prabang, Laos Seiryuji temple in AomoriCambodia
In Cambodia, turn back time to the days of the Khmer Empire with shore excursions from Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Highlights include the Royal Palace, the colourful local markets, the overwhelming UNESCO World Heritage-listed Angkor Wat temple complex, as well as watching locals going about their business as you meander down Tonle Sap Lake.
Indonesia
In Indonesia, Raja Ampat is becoming more popular as cruisers learn of its natural beauty. Located off the northwest tip of Bird’s Head Peninsula on Papua New Guinea, the most eastern island of the Indonesian Archipelago, Raja Ampat is known for its unique topography and has one of the richest coral reef ecosystems on the planet – perfect for snorkelling and diving.
Vietnam Laos
Luang Prabang in Laos has many hidden gems including magnificent temples, river tours, visits to local weavers and vibrant markets. The tiny villages of Kop Aek and Muang Keo offer glimpses into the lives and culture of the Lao, Khmu, and Hmong residents.
In Vietnam, Hanoi has many attractions including the Temple of Literature, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, One Pillar Pagoda, Quan Thanh Temple, Hanoi Hilton Prison Museum, Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple. In Ho Chi Minh City, visit Ben Thanh Market, Heavenly Lady Pagoda, War Remnants Museum, and Independence Palace.

Embarking on a culinary adventure is one of the most enticing aspects of travel and Asia's vibrant mosaic of flavours offer a feast for both palate and soul. Each country across the diverse continent boasts its own unique culinary traditions and tastes.
Across Vietnam, the aroma of pho fills the air. The traditional soup, made with beef or chicken broth, rice noodles and a medley of fresh herbs, is a soul-soothing symphony of flavours. Other must-try dishes include banh mi (crispy baguettes filled with grilled meat, pickled vegetables and fresh herbs), xoi ga, (sticky rice and chicken), gỏi cuốn (rice paper rolls) and irresistible bánh xèo (crispy pancakes stuffed with pork and prawns). Cambodian cuisine is every bit as delicious. Think aromatic soups, refreshing salads, smoky barbecued meats (including skewered slabs of frog and snake), noodles, stir fries and deepfried delights like nom kachai (rice flour chive cakes smothered with vinegar and sweet pepper sauce). But is the national dish, amok trey (fish curry), that takes centre stage. Made with coconut milk, lemongrass and aromatic spices it’s comfort food at its best. For those who prefer to step out of their comfort zone, a deep-fried tarantula at the local market is sure to leave your Spidey-senses tingling.
The tranquil landscape of neighbouring Laos also hides culinary treasures – notably the piquant dish known as laap, a traditional minced meat salad bursting with herbs, spices and lime juice. Or dive into a bowl of khao poon, a fragrant soup made with rice noodles and coconut milk. Escape to the tropical paradise of Bali where an intriguing combination of indigenous, Indonesian and Indian flavours set tastebuds alight. Try smoky satays (skewered meat with peanut sauce), ayam goreng (fried chicken with rice), gado gado (steamed vegetables with peanut sauce), bebek betutu (slow cooked duck) and nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice). And don't miss the markets and warungs (restaurants) along Jimbaran Beach for ikan batar (grilled fish).
Japanese culinary traditions are on display at every meal
Japanese food is universally adored for its harmonious blend of flavours, textures, and meticulous craftsmanship. Whether it’s a skewer of chicken at a hole-inthe-wall yakitori joint, a steaming bowl of noodles purchased via vending machine, sublime sushi or a Michelin-starred kaiseki feast, prepared with the utmost finesse and devotion to fresh produce, the artistry of Japanese culinary traditions is on display at every meal.
spices. Indulge in sizzling barbecues and colourful bowls of bibimbap (steamed rice topped with marinated vegetables, meat, a fried egg and spicy gochujang sauce). Of course, no Korean meal is complete without spicy sidekick, kimchi, a tangy staple made from fermented cabbage and radish that holds a special place in Korean culture.
