Time and tide wait for no man
— GEOFFREY CHAUCER
As we quickstep into another year, we are reminded how fast time flies, and that we need to seize the day by ticking off the bucket-list experiences we have been dreaming about.
Time spent travelling, is time spent learning about new cultures, delving into history, eating incredible local food, immersing into landscapes other than our own, enriching our knowledge. Even relaxing under a palm tree with a good book is a wise choice, allowing the mind to still, take stock, and rejuvenate.
We all have different places and experiences on our bucket lists. Mine is to cruise the Arctic, to see the polar bears in Churchill, Canada or to explore The Kimberley. Yours might be to soak up the kaleidoscope of cultures in New York City, go on a safari in the Serengeti, see gorillas in Rwanda or orangutans in Borneo. Or you might want to be at one with the sea in a tropical destination such as Bora Bora, where days will be filled by snorkelling with sea life. Perhaps you are more into how you travel, on a luxury train with olde-world glamour
and a passing parade of landscapes out your cabin window. Then there is cruising with a company such as Viking, who can take you on the seas, rivers and on expeditions to open your eyes to the wonders of the world in style and harmony.
Travel Associates can curate your dream bucket-list journey. Our 250 experienced Travel Advisors – all with a minimum of 10 years’ travel under their belts – know that every client is after a different experience, with individual travel styles and tastes.
Pick up the phone and start chatting to the Travel Associates team about where in the world you would like to go. Once booked, you can travel with confidence, knowing that your travel advisor has taken care of every little detail.
Where will your bucket list take you? The time to plan and book is now.

Eagle eye on Mongolia
Mongolia’s Eagle Festival will help you spread your cultural wings, witnessing and learning about the traditions of the Kazakh eagle hunters. The beautiful, well-trained golden eagles show off their lightning-fast speed and aerial acrobatic skills. Held in the Bayan-Olgii Province of Mongolia, the festival also features traditional Kazakh games, one of them on horseback. Gillian Woodley, from Travel Associates in Tasmania, wants the whole Mongolian experience.
“I want to stay in a ger, spend time with an Eagle Master, as well as exploring the Gobi Desert with its singing sand dunes, Flaming Cliffs and dramatic scenery.”
GillianWoodley, Travel Associates Hobart, TAS
Altai Mountains Western MongoliaDive into Mauritius
With a diversity of cultures and landscapes, from searing azure blue seas to lush rainforests, Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, is on the bucket-list menu for Alexandra Hannagan from Travel Associates in New Zealand. Alex is excited about the beautiful beaches and the waterfalls tucked away in tangled forests and scenic valleys.
“I can't wait to enjoy the amazing cuisine of Mauritius, with Indian, African, Chinese and European elements combining to create divine dishes overflowing with flavour. When I am not eating, I will be heading to yet another glorious beach to swim in the waters teeming with fish on a multitude of vibrant reefs. Eat, Sleep, Repeat!”

The allure of Morocco
With its African, European and Islamic influences, Morocco is on many bucket lists with so much to see, from Casablanca, to Fes, the ochre-red sands of the Sahara, Morocco’s ‘Grand Canyon’ and exotic Marrakech. In Meknes, tour the ruins and the stunning ancient gates in this imperial city founded in the 11th century, while in Volubilis, marvel at the ruins of this historic Roman city that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Fes discover the legendary tanneries, where ancient techniques are still used to prepare Moroccan leather, and in the Sahara, ride a camel to your luxury desert camp, for an unforgettable night in the desert.
Machu Picchu on high
This mysterious place, perched high up in the Peruvian Andes, is one of a kind, an Incan citadel that will render travellers speechless. You will feel as if you are in a sacred place as you wander around this historic sanctuary that is UNESCO World Heritage-listed and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Explore the semicircular Temple of the Sun with its jaw-dropping views of the Sacred Valley below, the Military Tower, the Temple of the Three Windows and so much more. The best way to get to Machu Picchu is on board the Hiram Bingham luxury train from Cusco, and add to your dream itinerary by staying at Sanctuary Lodge.
Cruising – by ship & rail
An Alaskan cruise on a luxurious boutique ship ticks all the boxes for travellers who love nature at her wildest. Cruising up the protected Inside Passage on water as smooth as glass, seeing glaciers up close and maybe even calving, is a dream come true. Kellie Woodward from Travel Associates in Victoria wants to add icing to her Alaskan cruise by teaming up the cruise with a journey on the Rocky Mountaineer.
“I would travel in GoldLeaf enjoying the amazing food on board, as well as taking in the incredible scenery that streams past the panoramic windows on all of the Rocky Mountaineer routes.”
Kellie Woodward, Ashmore, Harris & James Travel Associates, VIC
Aspen highs
Ask any snow lover where they would love to ski, and Aspen will be up the top of the list. The four iconic mountains –Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass, surround the beautiful township of Aspen, being the heart and soul of this destination. Not only known for its snowy activities, Aspen offers a plethora of lavish leisures. Tanya von Konigsmark has her heart set on this snowy wonder.
“I would stay at The Little Nell, as it is ski-in, ski-out and is known for its five-star service. When not skiing Aspen’s slopes, I’d organise a private wine tasting in the iconic Wine Cellar at The Little Nell, have a cocktail at Bad Harriet’s at the Hotel Jerome and shop for cowboy boots at Kemo Sabe.”

French Riviera
Embarking on a river cruise through the South of France would be divine. The region's rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and renowned cuisine offer a unique blend of experiences. Ian Carswell from Travel Associates in NSW dreams of traversing the rivers of France with his extended family.

A taste of the wild in Africa
Alison Lord, from Travel Associates in NSW, has visited six continents, but wants to visit the seventh – Africa. The thrill of seeing animals, big and small, furred and feathered, is unforgettable.
“I would start my African trip by staying at The Silo Hotel in Cape Town and see the sights including mystical Table Mountain. For wildlife experiences, I would go to Sabi Sabi and would stay at the beautiful Earth Lodge, a spectacular place to come home to after morning and evening safaris where you will most likely see leopards, lions and a whole lot more.”
Alison Lord, Travel Associates Cruise Boutique, Turramurra, NSW
“I see us exploring historic gems like Avignon, meandering through charming villages, and marvelling at the beauty of Burgundy's vineyards. We would choose a family-friendly cruise and would create enduring memories together. I can already imagine our family immersed in enjoyable and educational excursions, savouring gourmet French cuisine, and soaking in the mesmerising scenery along the rivers of France.”
Ian Carswell, Carswell & Turner Travel Associates, NSWThe white continent
Exploring Antarctica is one of life’s joys, giving a taste of what it would have been like for the intrepid adventurers who braved the great unknown. To see this surreal white wilderness at the bottom of the world, would be something that would live with you forever. There is no foregoing creature comforts, with today’s expedition ships a far cry from vessels like The Endurance, Fram or Discovery. Small and nimble boats take you ashore, with some ships even boasting helicopters to venture further afield. Choose an itinerary that takes you to South Georgia, the Antarctic Peninsula and the Weddell Sea, for mind-blowing wildlife sightings.

BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY
More to love in New York City
While we know and love the many wonders of Midtown Manhattan, New York City has so much more to offer when you see it like a local.
There is nowhere quite like New York City, but how much of it have you actually seen? With five boroughs, it is time to explore beyond Midtown, beyond Times Square, Central Park and Broadway. See New York like a local and even go exploring with one through Big Apple Greeter – locals who love to show visitors around their neighbourhoods. I chose to explore Brooklyn, and our wonderful guide was a font of information on this part of NYC that is fast emerging from out of Manhattan’s shadow.
"No matter what my clients' interests are, they fall in love with New York City. From cool cocktails in extravagant rooftop bars to New York fare in delis or diners, to Broadway shows, world-class museums and a host of things to do from touring by boat, bike or on foot, you will find a hidden gem around corner."
Teniesha Gill, Travel Associates Geelong, VICIn fact, Brooklyn is just a stone’s throw from Manhattan, just over the East River. Even just getting to Brooklyn is fun, heading over the famous Brooklyn Bridge which our guide told us was once crossed by 21 of P.T. Barnum’s elephants to prove to nervous locals that the newly built suspension bridge was safe. The Manhattan Bridge is another classic, and Coney Island is a must.
These days, the Brooklyn Bridge is an attraction in its own right, along with a burgeoning food scene, colourful street art, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and the piece de resistance, the newly imagined waterfront along Brooklyn Bridge Park and Brooklyn River Promenade. Take in the views to Manhattan and to the Statue of Liberty before riding the iconic Jane’s Carousel and feasting on a lobster roll at Luke’s Lobster.

Queens is a smash
Now that Brooklyn has truly emerged, Queens is the next big thing. Best known as home to the US Open Tennis Championships – held in Flushing from 26 August to 8 September 2024 – Queens also hosts the New York Mets baseball team at Citi Field. Queens is where you’ll find the legendary Rockaways Beach which has featured in a host of TV shows and movies, and has several major museums and arts venues, including the Museum of the Moving Image, Socrates Sculpture Park, the Noguchi Museum and MoMA PS1. Better yet, it offers a thriving food scene in places like Jackson Heights, Astoria and Flushing, with authentic cuisine from cultures around the world. Queens is the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world, with at least 138 languages spoken. It has 91 neighbourhoods, more than any other borough, and is the largest of the five boroughs. Head to Long Island City’s leafy Gantry Plaza State Park for head-turning views of Manhattan.
Staten Island
There is more to this island than the free ferry service that takes you past the Statue of Liberty. It has an intriguing blend of history, culture and nature, with 4,046 hectares of parks and green spaces, as well as beaches and boardwalks. A huge amount of the island’s green space is linked together to create the Staten Island Greenbelt, including forests, wetlands, lakes, ponds and hiking trails. Take to two wheels to explore the Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk that runs from Fort Wadsworth to Miller Field, passing two popular beaches – South Beach and Midland Beach.
A famous local is Frederick Law Olmsted, the man who designed Central Park. He honed his skills on Tosomock Farm in the Eltingville neighbourhood, running a farm and a nursery. You can still see some of the trees he planted nearly 175 years ago. A must to visit is the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden. Built in the 1800s as a home for retired sailors, it has been adapted and now features 23 historical buildings, nine botanical gardens and large wetlands, and is home to the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, the Noble Maritime Collection, Staten Island Children's Museum, the arts school Art Lab and the Staten Island Museum.
Little Sri Lanka, Staten IslandHome of the Yankees
The number one activity in the edgiest borough – The Bronx – is to take in a ball game at world-famous Yankee Stadium. There are games at the Stadium from April to September and while you’re there, visit Monument Park and The Yankees Museum to find out more about this legendary team’s history, with so many champion players, names like Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio. You can also do a tour of the Stadium.
The Bronx is rich in history. George Washington stayed here in the 18th century, poet Edgar Allan Poe lived here in the 19th century and hip-hop music was born in The Bronx over 50 years ago. Stroll down the Grand Concourse which was inspired by the Champs-Élysées in Paris and is known for its art deco buildings, and along River Avenue, admire the murals and take your pick of restaurants. This surprising borough is also where you will find the largest urban botanical garden in the USA – The New York Botanical Garden. It is a National Historic Landmark and has a million plants and 50 specialty gardens.

Meeting these locals and learning the Greenlandic way of life was incredibly interesting. I also loved sailing through Prince Christian Sound while sitting in the hot tub with a glass of Champagne."

He stands majestic on the edge of the ice, sniffing the air, peering through the falling snow at a strange object floating on the water. Then he lets out a gruff gurgling sound, as his digestive juices kick in. Breakfast is staring at him just metres away. That is us … potentially on the polar bear menu.
Our small group of adventurers is safe in our Zodiac, cruising through brash ice looking for bears. Our marine biologist guide knows how close to venture and the warning signs for when we need to move on. The bear about to dive in is that sign.
That one of a kind magic moment is just one of many incredible moments on an Arctic expedition.
Fascinating lessons are part of the experience. We learn that polar bears prefer to hunt from the water and that for every bear we see, eight more are probably watching us. It’s not every day you get to see walruses, often larger than polar bears, haul out on beaches, each one touching the next for a sense of security.
Going to the “ends” of the Earth for an unforgettable wildlife experience is topping many bucket lists and, once you see the wildlife in these polar regions, it’s easy to understand why. Exploring Antarctica is just as thrilling – and minus the predators. Having a penguin snuggle under your arm for warmth is a moment never forgotten. And no “don’t approach wildlife” rules are broken – the penguins just didn’t get that memo.

On safari
Safaris always rate highly on travel wishlists. They are, after all, the best way to see animals in the wild without giving up your creature comforts. We love that you can be immersed in nature by day and relaxing in an eco-lodge or glamping tent by night.
Africa will always be a favourite destination to see the Big Five. Lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards and buffaloes are the safari super stars but don’t dismiss the thrill of seeing hippos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, cheetahs, gazelles and even the not so likeable Nile crocodiles and hyenas.
Kruger National Park and Sabi Sands in South Africa, Madikwe Game Reserve at the tip of the Kalahari Desert, Savuti in Chobe National Park and Okavango Delta in Botswana, the Serengeti in Tanzania, the Zambezi River and Kenya’s Masai Mara, are often touted as the best places to see the Big Five.
Lake Clark National Park AlaskaSafaris off the beaten track
For something a little different set your (camera) sights on these alternative safaris to find some equally elusive animals, in exotic locations.
The Pantanal is the world’s largest wetland, on Brazil’s border with Bolivia, and within its wild interior are jaguars, ocelots, pumas and thousands of birds.
India’s Ranthambore National Park was once famous as tiger hunting grounds for the Maharajas of Jaipur. Now it’s better known for shooting tigers with a telescopic lens instead.
If tigers and leopards are on your wish list, consider a Sri Lanka safari. Make sure it includes Minneriya National Park for the chance to see the largest natural elephant gathering in the world. Up to 300 elephants meet in the park each year.
We love the idea of tracking pumas in Patagonia. This experience combines two natural wonders – the predator of the Andes and the world’s 8th natural wonder, Torres del Paine National Park.

Journeys & Adventures
No matter where you are travelling in the world, how you get there, and how you experience it, is half the fun.BY HELEN HAYES
I see red. Rich, ochre red, tinged with splashes of green, blurring past the train window. I am on The Ghan, and the various landscapes that I see along the way from Darwin to Adelaide are like a documentary screening in my cabin window. I watch when in my cabin, in the Outback Explorer Lounge chatting to new-found friends, or in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant, where I delight in meals that are of such a high quality I wonder how the chefs manage such sorcery. The highlight of The Ghan Expedition is exploring the destinations along the way – Katherine, Alice Springs, Coober Pedy – immersing first hand in the ochre-red scenery of the Red Heart of Australia.
Train travel in vogue
Trains are back in favour, especially in Europe, where it is so easy and comfortable to get around places like Switzerland, France, Spain and Austria. Night train journeys are back as well, saving time and money by avoiding airports. We love the Venice-Simplon-OrientExpress for its elegant grandeur and Hollywood
glamour, and cannot wait to try the new route from Paris to Portofino. We are thrilled that the Eastern & Oriental Express, which is back on the tracks in February 2024, has added a new route that takes you from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Penang, as well as the iconic Bangkok to Singapore journey.
Other luxury legends on wheels include the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada and the USA, the Andean Explorer and Hiram Bingham in Peru, Rovos Rail in Africa, the Maharajas' Express in India and the Vietage in Vietnam, with many more to whisk you to your destination in style.

Self-powered adventures – hikes, bikes and more
Hiking and biking tours have really taken off as a means of embracing the ‘slow travel’ way. We love that you can find spirituality and beauty on famous trails like the multiple routes of the Camino de Santiago, with achingly beautiful scenery abundant on New Zealand’s Milford Track, Queen Charlotte Track or the Routeburn. Japan is another favourite, with the Nakosendo Way, Kumano Kodō, Shikoku Temple Pilgrimage and the new Michinoku Coastal Trail a magical blend of adventure, culture and cuisine. Australia has a wealth of trails as well, from Margaret River’s Cape to Cape to Northern Territory’s Larapinta Trail, Victoria’s Great Ocean Road walk, and Tasmania’s Maria Island or Three Capes walks. For an added touch of excitement, we love the walking safaris available in Africa’s wild national parks and reserves.
Those who prefer two wheels to two legs have an incredible range of options, from city tours to country explorations and multi-day experiences like the many rides on New Zealand’s rejuvenated rail trails. For added spice, consider horse riding tours in Rajasthan, Mongolia or Argentina, or perhaps camel tours through the Sahara in Morocco.

DAY 4 CULTURE AND HISTORY OF MANHATTAN
Any trip to New York entails visiting at least some of the city’s famed architectural landmarks. In the morning, your driver will transfer you to meet your private guide at the 9/11 Memorial Museum for a tour and interpretation of this heart-rending memorial. The 9/11 Memorial Museum features images, rare video and remnants from the Ground Zero Recovery Period, all packed into an intimate and emotional space. You will be also allowed the rare opportunity to pick up and hold World Trade Center steel and window glass.
After lunch, your driver will transfer you to the Empire State Building to experience this famed landmark like a celebrity on a behind-the-scenes, all-access tour with a private guide. You'll be welcomed at the building's private entrance and go into the celebrity green room – an exclusive space that has welcomed the building's most famous guests. visitors, or just lounge in style and celebrate with a bottle of bubbles. When you're ready to experience the magic of the building, you'll enjoy a private, guided tour, skipping the lines on your way to the top to soak up New York's most famous view.
