Madeira Theme Park

Santana has a reputation as being one of the most appealing villages on the island. It is home to several original examples of the distinctive and traditional blue, red and white thatched houses known as palheiros. It is also home to the 17 acre Madeira Theme Park which recounts the history, traditions and culture of Madeira. Cable-sliding, bungee jumping and wall-climbing are on offer. Canyoning down the rivers of Madeira is perhaps the most exhilarating way to see the undiscovered and untouched parts of the island. Neither for the fainthearted nor non-swimmers, canyoning is a white water ride down gorges and waterfalls where participants, wearing wet suits and helmets, run down wet slabs of rock and jump off blind escarpments into the water. In summer the northern rivers provide some challenging conditions whilst in winter the streams to the south offer gentler, quieter flows.

Crystal clear seas, mild year round water temperatures and a varied underwater landscape have made diving in Madeira a rapidly growing sport. It’s possible to visit underwater wrecks around Madeira and Porto Santo in relatively shallow water and there are caves, ridges and volcanic reefs to be explored. The island’s many natural marine reserves are a perfect place to dive, with an abundant marine life. Daily diving is possible for both beginners and experienced divers and certificate courses are available during summer months.

Fishing Lying some 360 miles west of the coast of Africa, and straddling the deep blue Atlantic along the migratory routes of some of the most sought-after game-fish, Madeira is one of the world’s best angling locations. A tag and release system is practised by most fishermen on the island and some of the best equipped boats in the mid–Atlantic, manned by very experienced crews, are available to hire.

Watersports Watersports clubs and some of the larger hotels offer parasailing, jet skiing, water skiing and various other watersports. Sea kayaking is growing in popularity, whilst the best time for surfers and windsurfers is during the winter and spring when most waves are over five feet high.

Swimming Madeira is blessed with a very scenic rocky coastline so for long sandy beaches you will need to visit the neighbouring island of Porto Santo although there is a man-made beach and marina at the pretty coastal resort of Calheta on the south west coast of Madeira. However, for swimming enthusiasts, hotels have outdoor swimming pools and there are a number of swimming jetties in the coastal towns and swish lidos (mainly in Funchal). At Porto Moniz there’s a series of natural rock pools suitable for swimming, and as this is a favourite spot during the summer it does tend to get a bit busy.

The Lakes of Madeira From forest trekking along unmarked routes to hiking up the oldest levada in the west of the island, this unusual levada walk has it all. The twelve kilometre walk takes just over four hours and passes by the magnificent waterfalls and deep valley terrain of the island’s western plateau. It is one of the most enjoyable walks that Madeira has to offer. A moderately testing walk but worth the effort for a delightful Madeiran experience.

Funchal Located on the south east coast of the island in a picturesque bay, Madeira’s capital, Funchal, lies between the deep blue of the ocean and the lush green of the mountains behind and most of our featured hotels are situated in or just above Funchal, close to everything this colourful working city has to offer.

Approximately half the island’s population lives in Funchal and the centre is especially busy where the 16th century streets attempt to cope with 21st century traffic! Most of the hotels are located west of the city centre at Funchal Lido; an important tourist area with shops, restaurants and cafes. The style is changing, however, with colonial mansions being converted into luxurious hotels although many enclaves and the port still retain an old fashioned feel mixed with the commercial buzz of its working environment. The port area provides a fabulous vantage point to gaze at the rich (and sometimes famous) as cruise ships moor up for their overnight stops.

The City

Getting around

A short walk from the port is the old part of town, interesting to meander through during the day and excellent to visit in the evening when cafes and restaurants spill out onto the streets allowing you to enjoy al fresco dining. During the day the streets and old squares of Funchal are alive with flower sellers. With the blue sea in front, the greenery of the mountains behind, and the pavements a mass of vibrant colours of arum lilies, birds of paradise and amaryllis flowers, you can wander for hours. There is interesting 16th century architecture, a smattering of worthwhile museums and, if you love to shop, you can easily while away a morning or afternoon in the designer shops or at the local market which is well worth a visit as it is packed with local produce. A ‘must do’ during your stay in Funchal is to travel up in the cable car to Monte. The journey takes 15 minutes and there are wonderful views on the way up and from the top. A fun outing at the top is to visit Quinta do Monte for a typical Madeiran drink ‘Poncha’, then with a light head, toboggan back on one of the infamous wooden sleds!

Funchal, as with many capital cities, can suffer from busy traffic at times and in some areas traffic noise will be apparent. Car parking in the centre can sometimes prove difficult and many of our featured hotels in Funchal offer courtesy transport to and from the centre, saving visitors from the stresses of parking.

Nightlife Spending relaxed evenings in great restaurants is a favourite pastime (pages 22-23), however, there are several nightclubs in the centre of Funchal with the younger crowd heading for Trap, live bands performing until late at Copacabana in the basement of the Casino and opposite the freight harbour, are Marginal and Jam, two smaller clubs where the music caters for all tastes. Vespas with its modern dance music is Madeira’s largest club and very popular with a younger, local crowd and for latin rhythms seek out Gloria Latina. Nini Design Centre is a high quality restaurant and bar set in a 17th century fortress in the harbour, whilst Qasbah Live Music & Cocktails and Scat Funchal Music Club & Restaurant both host live music performances.

Sightseeing

Cable car to Monte Monte has been a favourite for visitors to Madeira since the 19th century when a rack and pinion railway was built to haul cruise liner passengers up the hillside from Funchal. It closed in 1939 but the route was reopened sixty-one years later thanks to the construction of a forty-one cabin cable car. The 15 minute trip offers magnificent views over Funchal. Monte toboggan Originally designed to carry freight down the three mile slope between Monte and Livramento, Monte’s famous wicker baskets were re-engineered at some point in the 19th century to accommodate seating for a couple of passengers. Each wicker carriage is controlled by two conductors in traditional dress who push, pull and brake as required. The simple braking mechanism consists of the boots, with car tyre tread for soles, worn by the conductors! From €25 per person or €15 per person for two people sharing.

Fado Traditional Portuguese music is performed live in a number of clubs and restaurants and many of the hotels will host their own fado nights. Regular fado evenings are at Arsenio’s in the Rua de Santa Maria and Marcelino’s in the Travessa da Torre. Folk dancers are also a regular feature at hotels but the best folk dancers on the island are reputed to perform at the Café Relogio in Camacha.

Lido Promenade The coastal promenade in the capital is lined with palm trees and bordered by splendid gardens, and links the Lido area with the pebbled Praia Formosa beach at the western end of Funchal. Along the promenade there is a good range of restaurants and bars such as Qasbah and Scat with occasional live music as well as swimming pools, including Lido, Doca dos Cavacas and Ponta Gorda, with its range of leisure facilities.

Art of Open Doors As with any city, Funchal enjoys a café culture for people-watching by day, turning to a livelier bar culture at night, and nowhere is this more pronounced than in the Old Town’s Rua de Santa Maria. One of Funchal’s oldest, it is now the most colourful of streets having been transformed by a local council initiative started in 2014 named the Art of Open Doors project. Now, this cobbled street, wide enough only for pedestrians, is filled with restaurants, cafés and bars all spilling on to the cobbles; the painted doors are fun to photo and there’s a couple of galleries worth a peek.

Porto Santo Island If it’s peace of mind and relaxation you require, the blue waters, golden beaches and calming ambiance of Porto Santo are sure to give you just that. The island is just seven miles by four and our featured hotel is delightfully situated on the island’s golden sandy beaches. Porto Santo Island lies twenty-three miles to the north east of Madeira and is easily reached by a twenty minute flight from Funchal airport or a two hour ferry crossing from Funchal harbour.

Although Porto Santo has a history of its own and still retains many fascinating vestiges of its past, it is the five mile ribbon of golden sand that provides the major attraction, although the sleepy capital of Vila Baleira and the tranquil lifestyle enjoyed all over the island are also reasons why visitors return year after year. This delightful island has remained largely undiscovered and with an indigenous population of just five thousand, you can be assured of a restful and peaceful time during your stay. With average daily temperatures between 19 C and 26 C the climate is stable and dry with little change from season to season so sunbathing and swimming is pleasant all year. o

Many of our guests choose to fly directly to Porto Santo via Funchal, but two centre or fly drive holidays combining hotels on Madeira and Porto Santo Island can easily be arranged. Please note that sometimes an overnight stop on Madeira may be necessary before the transfer to Porto Santo dependent upon the time of arrival at Funchal airport. Our reservations team will confirm details at time of booking.

As well as revitalising your body by soaking up the sun on Porto Santo, the beach is renowned for its therapeutic properties, and for those with rheumatic aches and pains, the sands are believed to have a curative effect. The long beach is divided into several different areas each with its own character. Both Penedo beach, one of the best and less crowded, and Calheta beach, a mixture of rock pools and sandy dunes, are awarded blue flags. Cabeco beach is located directly in front of the island’s hotels which provide bar and restaurant services for this area. Fontinha beach is the one that Madeirans love the most for its fine sand and clear, calm water and Pedras Pretas is very popular with the locals. Watersports include sailing, jet skiing, canoeing, water skiing and deep-sea fishing at certain times of the year and the clear, unpolluted ocean gives exceptional underwater visibility, excellent for scuba diving and snorkelling.

Activities & attractions The island can easily be covered on foot and there are several interesting look-out points commanding wonderful views. There is a golf course that also features tennis courts and a horse-riding centre, whilst Vila Baleira Thalassa hotel has a thalassotherapy centre (open to non residents) and the capital ‘town’ and the island’s only settlement of any notable size, Vila Baleira, is home to a small market, a town hall and a church. The island’s main claim to fame is its links to Christopher Columbus, and Casa de Colombo, a 15th century property, houses maps, paintings, engravings and details of Columbus’ life.
