2019/2020

ADVENTURE awaits It’s no secret I think taking to two wheels is the best way to travel: dropping you immediately into a place, awakening all your senses, and getting you closer to the action. I’m especially excited about this year’s new brochure as we’re featuring two of my favourite destinations: the Balkans (p21) and Vietnam (p12). As a tour leader I lead our Cycling Vietnam trip 14 times and fell in love with the country, and I try to return whenever I can. For 2019 we have a fantastic range of trips here, and have added a new journey to the south. It’s similar to an independent ride I took through the Mekong Delta way back in 2002, and I’m thrilled that you’ll now be able to experience this wonderful part of the country too. It’s important to remember that not all cycling holidays are about endurance either. There’s as much pleasure in cruising through vineyards and stopping to sample a glass as

there is in the challenging hill climbs. I’m still working my way through the delicious Domasino wine that I bought back from Lake Como this spring. For next year we’ve added a new trip that we think will get your tastebuds tingling, taking you through Italy’s Prosecco Hills (p18). All our adventures are carefully crafted so you’ll get the best out of each destination. And when you travel with Exodus, be assured we travel responsibly, working hard to eradicate the use of plastic bottles on all our adventures (p20). So whether you’re a solo traveller looking to meet like-minded people on a once-in-a-lifetime group trip, a couple looking to do your own thing on a self-guided ride, or a group of enthusiasts who want to tailor make your own cycling holiday, we have experts to help make it happen. Join us, adventure awaits…

This year’s front cover art was created exclusively for Exodus by Serbian artist Martina Crepulja. She uses her work to encourage and support children through art, and has chosen to donate one third of her fee for each of her six cover illustrations to Exodus’ Inspiration Project, our initiative that takes disadvantaged children from around the globe on exciting trips in their homelands. “I believe that children have the potential to build a better future, but only if they are encouraged to do so,” she explains. “The Inspiration Project inspires respect, tolerance and positive ideas by educating children about their own cultural and natural heritage, something they might otherwise be deprived of.” Call 0203 553 5029 or visit exodus.co.uk

ADVENTURE SINCE 1974

More than 40 years ago, we took a group of adventurers to Kathmandu in the back of our Bedford truck on a mission to see the world for ourselves. It was the first Exodus trip, a chance to venture into the unknown with fellow explorers, to meet people along the way who could share with us a perspective different to our own and to see the diverse destinations that they called home. While the truck is long gone, our passion for travel, culture and discovery has only grown as time has passed. So too have the friendships forged with those that so warmly welcome us. As we support their communities, we benefit from the sights, sounds, tastes and experiences of their homelands. And you will too, on your next Exodus adventure...

Why see the world

WITH EXODUS? ENRICHED BY EXPERTISE Every Exodus adventure is enhanced by our experience. We’ve travelled to more than 130 countries, to uncover their best-kept secrets and unmissable highlights. As you explore the world, you will do so with leaders who love to introduce you to their home countries, sharing stories and sights that allow you to experience it like a local. It’s these leaders — some who excel in fields such as mountaineering or archaeology — who show you the real heart of a destination.

INFINITE POSSIBILITIES With nearly 500 expertly arranged trips to 100 countries, you have an exciting choice to make. Our departures encompass winter specific adventures, cultural trips, cycling and trekking holidays, wildlife encounters and unforgettable family experiences, each with an activity rating so you can choose how active your trip will be. While our itineraries are carefully crafted, we’re flexible in how you enjoy them. Travel as part of a guided group or on a personalised, tailormade trip. You can also add extensions, flight upgrades and more.

TREADING CAREFULLY We are determined that future generations continue to enjoy exploring the world as we do, so we leave as small an impact as possible when we travel. With your help, we support the communities that so graciously share their homes with us through various projects, championing local businesses and creating jobs. We've initiated projects to eradicate single-use plastic bottles, take children and porters on adventures in their homeland for the first time, as well as community projects in the Himalaya.

PAINLESS PLANNING Activities, transport, accommodation and your tour guide are all arranged for you, so you can forget the logistics and simply focus on enjoying your holiday. Extensive trip notes for each adventure tell you all you need to know before you go, from any vaccination information to the expected weather. On guided group trips, our expert leaders are always on hand with advice should you need it, and they always have recommendations too. We’re also proud to say that 97% of our travellers would recommend us to their friends. And we’re ATOL and ABTA protected too, so you can be assured you are in safe hands.

YOUR ADVENTURE YOUR WAY

GUIDED GROUP ADVENTURES There are many benefits to joining a guided group trip, and they make it our most popular way to travel. The ‘insider’ knowledge of our world-renowned leaders not only introduces your group to the best of a destination, but they share the stories behind them, taking you down paths less travelled to see the true heart of a country. They’re on hand for everything you need, from meeting you at the airport to restaurant recommendations and more. Groups range between 8-16 travellers, made up of a mix of people who share a love of discovery — perfect if you’re travelling solo. We find this size creates the best group dynamic, but also means we’re not disruptive to the destinations and communities we visit. It also means the cost of the trip is spread across the group ensuring great value for money.

SELF-GUIDED TOURS Whilst having a guide to point you in the right direction works for many, you might prefer the independence of a self-guided trip, be it a walking or cycling one. With self-guided, the decisions are yours to make. Our detailed route notes offer you all the information you’ll need — each of which have been tested by our experts. We include detailed kilometre-bykilometre descriptions that advise excursion routes, places of interest and restaurant recommendations. Prefer to spend a lazy afternoon picnicking by a riverbank? With self-guided travel you set your own pace, which means there’s always time for that detour to visit the nearby château or an extra piece of cake at lunchtime! We take care of your luggage making sure it’s transferred and ready for you at your next accommodation.

TAILORMADE HOLIDAYS Every aspect of a tailormade adventure can be created especially for you. Seen something special in our brochure, but you’d like more time in one destination? Or want to tone down the activity level to suit you? Our experts are on hand to make it happen. Similarly, if you want to go away but none of our current dates or locations are right for you, just ask your travel agent. With 44 years’ experience travelling the world, we’re able to get you to your dream destination, and provide everything you need when you get there including one of our knowledgeable local leaders. And only two people need to travel for us to tailor something unique, so if you’re looking for an unusual honeymoon, an exclusive group adventure for your walking club or a family getaway then we can arrange it for you.

FLEXIBILITY NO MAT TER HOW YOU TRAVEL We offer a number of extras on all our guided group, selfguided and tailormade holidays, designed to make your trip special and free of complication. Regional departures are a simple option that makes all the difference, especially if you’re pushed for time. Let us know your nearest airport, and we’ll try our best to make it possible for you to travel from there. We can also sort flight upgrades, if you want to fly in style or additional comfort.

Some guests choose to linger a little while longer in their chosen destination, and so we can arrange trip extensions or onward travel to a new place if you want to make the most of your time away. Flexibility is everything when it comes to ensuring you have a hassle-free holiday, and we pride ourselves on our ability to make your life just that little bit easier. Speak to one of our experts to discuss your options.

TAKE THE BACKROADS Best for seeing the real Cambodia “This is our first stand alone bike trip to Cambodia,” says Product Manager Kelly Reid, “giving customers the chance to explore the country in depth. It covers many of the highlights as well as taking you through some off-the-beaten track areas not visited by other tourists.” Travelling from the bustling capital of Phnom Penh to sultry Siem Reap, the journey takes you through the magnificent Angkor Wat complex, with detours through rural villages and rolling countryside. “We visit temples, cycle past rice paddies and stop for lunch in local farms,” says Kelly. “The food here is all about contrasts, sweet and bitter, salty and sour, raw and cooked. Try the local rice noodle soup, fresh salad dishes, or even a deep fried spider — a local delicacy!” Cycling Cambodia

GET THAT FIZZY FEELING

LIVE THE SOUTH AMERICAN DREAM

Best for quenching your thirst

Best for simply stunning scenery

The province of Treviso in north west Italy has always had strong links to cycling, with events like the Giro d’Italia often taking place in its undulating hills. But it’s also home to the Prosecco Region, and its eponymous sparkling wine. “There’s stunning scenery and landscapes, peaceful country lanes, and breathtaking views of vine-covered hills, medieval villages and lakes,” says Product Manager Marta Marinelli. “A few routes are hilly, but efforts are rewarded by tasting the best local food and drink, starting of course with Prosecco.” We stay in 3 and 4-star hotels, including historic Villa Soligo — with an inviting pool to cool off in.

“There’s no other cycling trip out there that travels from Atacama to Salta,” says Product Manager Malcolm Parkinson. “The scenery is so varied. You start in the driest desert in the world, visit salt flats, a rainbow hill of seven colours, cycle through a rainforest, pass incredible rock formations, and finish in ‘Salta la Linda’ — meaning Salta the beautiful one. Both Argentina and Chile are world famous for their wines, and this trip includes Cafayate — a very famous wine region. Food here is delicious too, the speciality in this region is empanadas served with homemade chimichurri sauce.”

Best for first timers

Best for local culture and warm hospitality

Take in the rural villages and lush landscapes as you freewheel next to gentle rivers and along flat tracks, on this adventure through southern Vietnam and the Mekong Delta. “This 9-day journey is suitable for people who’ve never done a cycling trip before,” says Product Manager Kelly Reid. “It’s more leisurely and a bit shorter than our other Vietnam cycling trips, but still packs a real punch in terms of what we do.” The journey includes an overnight homestay in the Mekong and the chance to taste local cuisine — including Vietnamese pancakes and tamarind-flavoured soup.

“The rugged mountains, picturesque lakes and remote villages where life seems unchanged for centuries, makes the Balkans an ever more popular destination,” says Product Manager Natasha Black. This is still a relatively undiscovered part of Europe, and customers explore four countries — Albania, Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro — in just two weeks, taking in the UNESCO Town of Ohrid, the magnificent Mavrov Lake and National Park, and the wild and rugged Dinaric Alps. There are some tough hill climbs and this trip is rated moderate to challenging, but you’ll be rewarded by warm hospitality and a wealth of hearty food.

The Travel Guide

THE TRAVEL GUIDE Choosing a trip shouldn’t be a challenge. We’re leaders in adventure travel, and our experts have visited more than 131 countries between them, fuelled by a passion for adventure. With backgrounds in archaeology, mountain guiding and more, they’re sharing their expertise to make selecting your next holiday as easy as possible...

FIND YOUR PERFECT MATCH Our cycling holidays come in all shapes and sizes, from gentle self-guided cycling tours in the Loire region of France to a fully supported expedition in Mongolia. No matter how you travel, all our cycling journeys are carefully crafted so you see the best of a destination. Each trip is also graded — from leisurely to challenging — to indicate their level of difficulty. Look out for this in the holiday listings and online. We also include number of days riding, with the percentage of on and off-road cycling, type of terrain, and amount of vehicle support. If you’re still feeling unsure you can read reviews online, download our trip notes, or just pick up the phone and talk to one of our experts. “While some of our trips are designed for experienced cyclists only, more often than not what unites people is their love of travel, rather than the fact they are superfit cyclists,” says Head of Product Andy Ross. He’s also an experienced tour leader, so no one understands our philosophy better than him. “It’s not a race. On Exodus trips we’re here to enjoy the destination. We cater for the whole group — no one gets left behind.” Our cycling holidays allow you to fully engage with your surroundings. You’ll travel further than you can on foot, and enjoy the freedom to stop whenever you want to explore hidden areas that are inaccessible to cars and buses. What better way to travel? WHAT OUR EXPERTS SAY FLIGHTS & FLEXIBILITY We book group flights from London, but that doesn’t mean you have to travel from there. “If you’d find it easier to embark on an Exodus adventure from your local airport, we can arrange that for you,” says Aviation Manager, Nicholas Errington. “Our aim is to make your trip as enjoyable as possible, and we do that by organising everything for you.” That means we’re super flexible, even if that means flying from one airport and flying back to another.

GOING SOLO Around half of our guided group customers travel solo. We work hard to make it as easy as possible for them to do so. Our great relationships with partners around the world mean that when there’s a single supplement to pay, it’s as low as possible. “We also offer the option to avoid one entirely, by pairing willing travellers up to share accommodation,” says Sales expert, Andrea Beech. “New friends, and savings!”

FITNESS FIRST Whether it’s a leisurely cycling trip you’re planning, or a challenge-of-a-lifetime endurance adventure, getting fit and ready for your trip is crucial to ensuring you can enjoy all the incredible moments awaiting you. Our fitness guides will take you through everything, from stretching and warm-ups to strength exercises, fitness guidance, endurance advice and even nutrition tips. They increase in intensity, depending on the grading level of your trip. You’ll find the guide online: exodus.co.uk/fitness-guides

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL “It doesn’t matter where we travel to, every trip is designed to leave only a positive impact on the destination we visit,” says Tom Harari, Exodus Responsible Tourism Manager. “We travel responsibly, being mindful of the environments we enjoy. Our pledge to ban single-use water bottles on our trips by providing refill opportunities has inspired positive change in each country we visit. So, we advise that all our customers take a reusable bottle with them to help reduce plastic waste.”

ELECTRIC DREAM

Need a little assistance on those daunting hill climbs? Or perhaps you’d like to take things more leisurely? Then consider an e-bike. These electric powered cycles are emission-free and can really level the playing field on a group cycling trip. Opting to ride one could make a specific trip more suitable for friends or partners with different fitness or experience, or make a tougher route a more realistic proposition. You can upgrade to an e-bike on many of our group or self-guided cycling holidays. Also, new for 2019, we are introducing special e-bike departures on a number of our more popular group cycling holidays. FIRST TIMER CYCLES SICILY For Exodus’ Tom Melhuish, cycling was only ever a means of getting from A to B. But in Sicily, far from his daily commute, he embarked on what would be his first holiday in the saddle… “I’m quite an active person, but I’d never been on a cycling trip before. I chose Sicily with no idea what to expect. I came dressed for PE, rather than in full gear! Others in the group had more professional equipment, but it was a mix. I’m glad I packed padded cycling shorts and a helmet, but I wish I’d taken gloves. Everything else was arranged. The bikes were ready to go and there was a support vehicle with us all the time. They were well equipped with plenty of spares and a large tool kit too, as well as snacks and water. Some hill climbs in the sun were challenging, but we all made it. Other days were flat and relaxing.

The vineyards were beautiful and a descent down to the coast with stunning views and fresh breeze was spectacular. The accommodation was all locally run, and the food was delicious — the picnics too. One day, we took a quiet dirt track to a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere to eat our lunch — it was incredibly picturesque. The landscape was so varied, some days we cycled through vineyards and took time to explore. Others were spent soaking up impressive architecture. We struck a great balance between cycling and discovery. Our fantastic leader Iris lived in Syracuse, our final stop, and she introduced us to places we wouldn’t have known about without her. She really made the trip! I’d love to do it all over again!”

ALAN WARD & LINDA DUNN Exodus Travellers

Vietnam is one of our most popular destinations, and with good reason. An exotic land made up of kaleidoscopic images, a cycling holiday here is as diverse and exciting as the country itself. Whether you’d prefer to cycle long, winding roads through tea plantations; freewheel along next to vast swathes of white sands; or whizz down dramatic descents with stunning views dropping off the mountainside, Vietnam has an energy that’s impossible to resist. Exodus customers Alan Ward and Linda Dunn describe their first cycling trip together. LINDA: I’d never been on a cycling holiday before — I don’t really even cycle. ALAN: Whereas I go out with a friend most Sundays, who I’ve even been on a few independent trips with. But then he took his wife on a group trip with Exodus…

ALAN: Two big fantastic descents were a joy. Some of the cycling was almost alpine with gobsmackingly beautiful views. There was great coastal riding too. LINDA: And lots of opportunity to just stop. We went to a rubber plantation, and fruit farms.

LINDA: …I asked her if she thought it was something I could do. She said yes.

ALAN: Our guide was incredibly good. He told us many stories which bought the place to life.

ALAN: It’s our first holiday since the kids have grown up, so we wanted to do something different, but knew it would have to be suitable for mixed abilities.

LINDA: The itinerary incorporated the normal touristy stuff as well as cycling. Like the Chu Chi tunnels, and an overnight train to Hoi An...

LINDA: For

the first eight months I was buzzing about going to Vietnam… ALAN: …it’s

been on our bucket list for a long

time. LINDA: And then suddenly I thought, ‘Oh my god! What have we done!’ To prepare, I joined a spin class. After my first session I hated it, but as I got fitter I began to enjoy it.

ALAN: ...where I got a beautiful suit made in 24 hours. LINDA: We ended in Halong Bay with a river cruise. We slept onboard and had a delicious feast. The sunset was spectacular. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the hotels — they were almost too nice for us soggy, muddy, sweaty people!

LINDA: What united us wasn’t being super-fit cyclists, but the fact that we all wanted to see a new country a bit differently.

ALAN: Our guide arranged for us to have all our kit washed and dried overnight, which was a benefit over going alone. As were the wonderful restaurants. One place that stands out was a little seafood restaurant — the kind of place you would never eat in unless it was recommended — very basic, but fantastic.

ALAN: Everyone supported each other, and on tough days the stronger riders rode with the weaker riders in their slip stream.

LINDA: We ate like locals, mostly because of the guides. There were four of them, including a mechanic. It was a complete support team.

LINDA: Every day it changed depending on how people felt, so you got to ride with different people. There wasn’t any pressure to keep up with those at the front.

ALAN: Next we’re going cycling in Albania, and after that we’re planning to go to Mongolia, camping and cycling…

ALAN: When

we got there it was a lovely group of people, all a similar age to us.

ALAN: Seeing

the country by bike allowed us to immerse ourself in the culture. LINDA: As

you went through villages children came running to greet you — it was delightful!

LINDA: I

think I better get back to my spin class!

CHOOSE YOUR OWN TRAVEL COMPANIONS These could be friends or family, fellow enthusiasts or members of your local cycling club. You’re able to spend quality time together and make decisions about your route that benefit everyone. And of course you enjoy meal times together and create shared memories.

1

2 CYCLE AT YOUR OWN PACE, WHATEVER THAT MAY BE Set off in the morning at whatever time you like, as well as stop for drinks, meals, photos and look at local points of interest whenever you want en route. There is only one time restriction: if you’re not at the next hotel by 7pm, we start looking for you!

SPEND MORE TIME DOING THE THINGS YOU LOVE, LESS TIME EXPLORING THE THINGS YOU DON’T If you know there’s a beach with invitingly cool waters for a lunchtime dip, you can set off early to spend more time there. If there’s a hill up ahead, that you don’t have the energy to climb, more often than not we’ll give you an alternative route.

3

4 BUT YOU CAN CHOOSE YOUR OWN PATH The only thing that’s fixed is where you will sleep each night. So if you want to add on more technical climbs, or take a detour to a nearby town, you can.

TRAVEL SLOW, AND IMMERSE YOURSELF IN LOCAL CULTURE Wave and smile or stop and chat to locals, or visit local cafés for lunch. As you pass by fields of flowers or lemon groves, breathe the aromas of the countryside. Some customers recently told us that they’d found Italian people so friendly and accommodating — especially the farmer who brought them ice-cold bottles of water and offered them a shaded bench in his garden to eat lunch! That’s what it’s all about.

7

EVERYTHING IS TAKEN CARE OF FOR YOU We’ve done the hard work — pouring over maps, researching the best view points and interesting routes, booking the best hotels and places to stop for food and drink along the way. There’s even detailed route notes to help you get the most out of your journey. We take your luggage for you, 6 and there’s 24-hour support. talian wine has been flowing for millennia, and the country is home to some of the oldest and most prestigious wine-producing regions in the world. Travel by bike and you’ll take in the rolling vineyards and quaint farmhouses from a whole new perspective, with plenty of opportunity to stop and quench your thirst along the way...

For full holiday listings see from p28

Vineyards peppered across its undulating countryside make for not only sumptuous wines, but for tranquil cycling trails through green, peaceful hills and valleys. Stretches of open space are interspersed with sun-soaked olive trees, quiet tracks that lead to serene picnic spots and plenty of opportunities to meet with local wine producers and sample the blends that their families have been perfecting over generations. In 2017, Italy was the world’s biggest wine producer, with numerous regions — from the Aosta Valley in the north west to Calabria in the south — sharing their bottles with the world.

The variety on offer, from deep ruby red Chianti to effervescent Prosecco, offers a taste of their regions, each telling its own story. In the Piedmont region, nestled at the foot of the Alps, the valley fog helps ripen the grapes, whereas the warmer, Mediterranean climate aids the growth of vines in Calabria. While climate can go some way to explaining more about Italy’s wines, it’s the locals living here who can give true insight into the region. After all, they’ve been nurturing the vineyards, perfecting the processes and adhering to family traditions for generations. What better to raise a glass to?

VENETO

TUSCANY

LOMBARDY

The hills of Colli Berici stretch from just south of Vicenza to just north of Padua, and the mineral-rich soil provides an ideal environment for grapes. Wine has been produced here for 3000 years. As we cycle here en route from the Dolomites to Venice, we take time to sample it, enjoying a glass in a family-run winery, once a 12th century convent.

Cycling by the Ricasoli vineyards — reputedly the oldest in Italy still producing — on the way from Siena to Castellina in Chianti offers a chance to stop and try a grape or two. It’s those that make fine Chianti, and we try the wine on the 1,200 hectares of vineyards, surrounded by gentle hills, olive groves, valleys and woodlands of chestnut and oak.

Sorsasso is a winery on Lake Como, founded two decades ago by Daniele Travi and Roberta Beltracchini. The family pick their grapes by hand, creating wines that are only sold locally. Daniele and Roberta’s daughter Silvia is a sommelier, and she’ll give us a fascinating insight into how the Travi family have been making wine since the 18th century.

Some of the most recognisable Italian wines are produced in Piedmont, with Barolo, Barbaresco, Moscato and Barbera to name just a few. As home to some 40 Michelin star restaurants, excellence can be found in every corner of the region. As you cycle, keep your eyes peeled for hand-painted signs inviting you to tastings at a cantina privata.

Puglia is Italy’s second largest wineproducing region after Veneto. Blessed by year-round sun, sea and wind which contributes to the fertile soil, it’s cultivated for wine as well as olive oil and other fresh and tasty produce. Every trail you take here leads to culinary heaven, and your local leader takes you by bike to establishments serving the best.

Prosecco popularity is at an all-time high, and we cycle the province of Treviso to learn why. The grapes are grown on terraced hills, and we wind through the vineyards to enjoy views of the fertile landscape and hamlets perched on the hillsides. We try not only the bubbly spumante and frizzante Proseccos, but the tranquillo (still) variety too.

Every adventure that we embark on around the world has an impact on the destination we visit. Ensuring that ours is a positive one is a responsibility that we take seriously. That’s why we began our war on plastic waste more than two years ago. Exodus Responsible Tourism Manager Tom Harari explains: “The scourge of plastic is well documented. Even the most remote beaches in the world have plastic waste washed ashore, it gets in the food chain and kills wildlife, it blocks up waterways and pollutes water and soil alike.”

THE NUMBER OF SINGLE USE PLASTIC BOTTLES SAVED ON EXODUS ADVENTURES* IN ONE YEAR

It’s for this reason that Exodus works so hard to #BanTheBottle, an ongoing pledge to eliminate all single-use plastic bottles on trips. “We’ve been working with our local partners to find ways to provide safe and clean drinking water to our clients via other means,” says Tom. “We encourage each traveller to take a reusable bottle with them on their trip, which can be refilled in a number of ways.” On our Discover Sri Lanka adventure, thirsty sightseers can top up on the bus throughout the day, as Exodus customer Nina HookZurlino explains: “On our trip, the mega bottle of water with a pump was great as it replaced many one litre bottles.” At Exodus we’re delighted that the world is waking up to the perils of plastic consumption. The detrimental effects of single use plastic on the planet are finally being understood, and we believe that the travel industry has had a huge role in influencing this global revolution. You too can have a positive impact, by packing a refillable bottle with you when you travel, and being extra mindful about your use of plastic as you travel in your destination. To learn more about our war on plastic, how you can help, and watch our new video visit: exodus.co.uk/insights/exodus-bans-the-bottle * Period of July 1 2017 — June 30 2018 based on three 0.5l bottles per traveller on non-active trips and four for trekking and cycling adventures. ** Excluding self-guided and tailor made adventures

THE BALKANS

T

he reasons for travelling into the heart of the beautiful Balkans are so plentiful that you’d get a different answer from any adventurer you asked. Some put the ever-increasing popularity of the region down to how inexpensive the countries here are to visit, and how easy it is to reach them. Others are simply looking for long, sunny days in the saddle — the region definitely boasts an enviable climate — or to see why its towns and cities are the picturesque setting for TV shows like Game of Thrones. But Exodus travellers discover how much more

there is to the area than on first sight. We uncover the hidden gems — cycling along the rocky plateaus and gorges of Albania and to the unique ancient villages nestled in the valleys of Macedonia. We sample the produce of Bosnia’s wine region, a delight for those with a curiosity to try something new, and unwind on stretches of Croatian coast that are yet to be discovered by the masses. All are led by our expert guides who harbour the very best insider secrets. Overleaf see how you might experience the Balkans — but beware — you may end up wanting to visit more than once…

CYCLE THE BALKANS Best for crossing borders Explore landscapes and life in the Balkans in-depth by journeying between multiple countries under your own pedal power. On this trip you’ll see Albania, Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro from the saddle, discovering national parks, mountains, lakes, medieval towns and more. Riding high altitude routes, gorges and dense forests mean the cycling is excellent, but the towns, villages, ancient sites and cities — including impressive Kotor and atmospheric Ohrid — make it as much a cultural adventure as a cycling one. CYCLING IN ALBANIA Best for discovering ancient settlements Before the collapse of the People’s Socialist Republic of Albania in 1991, the beauty of this fascinating country was hidden from the world. We’re now fortunate enough to explore it by bike, carefully winding our way between rural villages, delightful beaches and giant, snow-capped mountains. This trip takes us from the border of Macedonia towards the sea, through the ancient town of Gjirokastra, to the Albanian Riviera, past the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Butrint and to Llogara National Park before our arrival in Vlorë. CYCLE BOSNIA & MONTENEGRO Best for spectacular mountain scenery Head from Bosnia over the Dinaric Alps into Montenegro, with hill climbs and steep descents offering new views and experiences on uncrowded roads. Customer Hazel Bennett explains: “The scenery was magnificent and ever changing. No two days were the same and my breath was taken away at every twist and turn in the road. A mix of culture was added to the pot through local cuisine and wine tasting.” Our trip ends in Dubrovnik, the ancient city that is the setting for Game of Thrones’ Kings Landing. CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST Best for coastal adventure Journey into Dubrovnik on an alternative route that takes you along one of the most impressive coastlines in Europe. We tour the long, beautiful islands of Hvar and Korcula, taking a ferry between them so we can uncover the very best seaside cycling spots. Traveller Francis Josephs says, “We cycled up and down hills with amazing sea views, visiting stunning towns, villages and vineyards. We stayed in lovely places, swam in the sea and ate very well!” Cycling the Dalmatian Coast

CYCLE NORTHERN CROATIA & SLOVENIA Best for challenging climbs Thrill-seeking cyclists who thrive when challenged will enjoy this hilly adventure into a lesser-explored part of Croatia. It begins in the 900-year-old city of Zagreb in Slovenia, taking you through vast canyons, deep river valleys and mountain roads before crossing the border to Krk Island and the Istria Peninsula. As you cycle, the backdrop changes from hilltop castles and Gorski Kotar Mountains to rolling green hills, olive groves and vineyards. Celebrate your achievements in the UNESCO-listed town of Poreč. Cycle Northern Croatia & Slovenia

EXODUS.CO.UK/TRIP/MVG

CYCLE MACEDONIA & NORTHERN ALBANIA Best for ancient culture It’s in northern Albania and western Macedonia that you find some of the last hidden gems in Europe. A landscape peppered with sweeping gorges, rocky peaks and crystal waters reflecting the lush green scenery. It’s as impressive to look at as it is to cycle, offering challenges that yield rich rewards. Ancient villages can be found nestled into the valleys, and we pass them on this carefully chosen route, meeting friendly locals and sharing in the wonders of their homelands. Tailormade Croatia

T A I L O R M A D E

—CROATIA— The dazzling Dalmatian coast, quiet hills, Renaissance towns and peaceful islands of Croatia make it a must-visit for cyclists who want variety on their route. With so much magic to uncover, you may find that existing Exodus trips to this beautiful country don’t quite tick all your boxes. That’s why customer Mel Jarrett contacted our Tailormade team, to craft an itinerary especially for her and partner Graham. “I’d been to Croatia on a group holiday with Exodus and I really loved Dubrovnik. I wanted to take Graham back with me. We’d also MEL JARRETT Exodus Customer heard that the islands were beautiful but they weren’t on the group itinerary, which covered Bosnia and Montenegro instead. As busy professionals we find short but focused trips more appealing, as we can do the things we enjoy and skip the rest. It just made sense to go tailormade. We planned the trip with Thidara and she was excellent, getting in touch with our local guide when she needed an expert on the area to fine tune things. We planned the initial itinerary together but then

Exodus did all the detailed work, from working out which ferries we needed to take, to bike hire. Our journey started in Split, then on to the wonderful Korcula and Hvar islands, before ending with two nights in Dubrovnik so we could explore it further. It was just the two of us on the trip, with a dedicated driver and guide. It gave total flexibility over the structure of the tour and type of accommodation — which we upgraded to include 5* hotels where possible — and numbers of miles cycled each day. The local guides were fantastic too. Mario couldn’t have been more helpful and friendly. His love for Croatia was so obvious, and he knew plenty of little-known — but excellent — places to take us to. We’d definitely go on another tailormade adventure. Choosing the next destination is the problem!”

We offer Tailormade Adventures all over the world. Just tell us where you want to go and when, and our specialist Tailormade team will work to create your perfect adventure. Call us on +44 (0)20 8772 3874 or email on tailormade@exodus.co.uk.   For full holiday listings see from p28

elcome to a land of verdant rainforests, jungle canopies, Mayan ruins and cyan seas. Here there are lost cities, rainbow mountains, bubbling hot springs, spitting volcanoes, salt plains and extraordinary wildlife. From the Caribbean coast of Colombia to the glacial fjords of Patagonia, the wild Pacific Ocean to the soaring mountains of the Andes: Central and South America’s epic canvas takes in a riotous mix of culture and outstanding biking trails. The roads here are good, with light traffic.

And there’s often the opportunity to add on optional tours such as ziplining, white-water rafting, kayaking and snorkelling… But despite all this wonderful adventure to be had, more often than not it’s your leader and support team who will make your trip. These are the people to give you encouragement when needed. Point out that bird you would otherwise have missed. Or take you to a local restaurant that you’d never have found otherwise. Turn over to meet the people who will make your trip…

and natural history, and amazing pre-Columbian and Colonial heritage as well.

ROBERTO AGUILAR

Costa Rica & Panama About me: Born in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, I was raised in a small town on the Caribbean side. This rural environment started my love for the natural world. Learning and experiencing what surrounds us enriches the mind and spirit, and sharing this experience with travellers from throughout the world is what I love most. I’ve been working as a tour leader for six years now. Enjoys: I love to see the chronological history of Central America — as you cycle you can see the countryside reflects a vivid past, an active present and a vibrant future. Central America is a zone of contrasts, with vast riches in biodiversity

JUAN CARLOS SALAZAR Peru

About me: I have been guiding biking trips in Peru for over 20 years, starting as a mechanic when I was just 16. I get to ride my bike and show people amazing trails, beautiful scenery and the incredible history of Peru. This is only the second Exodus Peru bike tour but I am looking to forward to doing many more. Enjoys: Big scenery and huge mountains, sacred ‘apus’ — the mountain gods — amazing bike trails. Oh and the food too –we have the best food in South America! I think I have the best job in the world.

What else? I always tell my guests, ‘This is not a competition’. The winner is the one who enjoys their journey the most! One of my favourite days is cycling along Lake Arenal in Costa Rica. Beautiful rural scenery punctuated by tiny towns, unaffected by consumerism or technology. And there’s incredible wildlife and natural wonders: including toucans, monkeys, sloths and crystal-clear streams, all overlooked by the impressive Arenal Volcano. And we stop to sample freshly brewed Costa Rican coffee, the world’s best! Costa Rica is a place of peace: we have no military. Our National Anthem includes the phrase, ‘Long live our prosperity and peace’. Cycle Costa Rica & Panama

EXODUS.CO.UK/MUC

What else? We start in Cusco and the Sacred Valley where I can teach you all about the Incas, we then do an amazing 75km downhill through coffee plantations and into the cloud forest to some awesome hot springs. The hike to view Machu Picchu from behind is another great highlight. Then we go way off into the middle of nowhere to spend the night on an Alpaca farm, and end with a stay with families on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Doing this trip by bike means you get to see the real Peru, at a slow pace that so many tourists miss as they rush past in buses. We joke that whilst the Incas never invented the wheel, they did invent the cycle trail — they just didn’t know how we were going to use it! Cycle Peru: Machu Picchu & Titicaca

GABRIEL OSPINA Colombia

About me: I’m from Bogotá, where there’s a tradition called ‘ciclovía’ that started 44 years ago. Every Sunday from 7am-2pm 76 miles of streets are closed to cars. Cyclists, runners and walkers take over the streets — it’s an unforgettable spectacle, with miles and miles of car-free streets packed with people waving and calling out to one another. It’s a cult activity — about 1.7 million people join in, and it’s one of the things that first got me passionate about cycling: the pleasure of the open road. I’ve been with Exodus since 2016 and I love being able to show people my beautiful country by bike.

TAIEL CROCE

Chile & Argentina About me: I’m from San Carlos de Bariloche in Rio Negro. Located on the northern edge of Patagonia, the river forms part of the Amazon. It’s wild west country! I’m not a gaucho and I don’t know how to dance tango… but I do know how to ride a bike. This will be my fifth year with Exodus, and I love it. Enjoys: Meeting new people and showing them the many many amazing things about my country: the food is amazing, the ‘mate’ (tea), the landscapes, our wildlife and culture. I love to share this with visitors.

Enjoys: Friendly roadside greetings from locals, wonderful coffee, singing birds, bright flowers, stunning landscapes, freshly picked fruit… and most of all, the music! What else? The magical Colombian roads offer fantastic adventures, challenging holidays and beautiful mountain landscapes. Colombia is a country with a very special topography just waiting to be explored by bike. I think this trip is particularly beautiful — perfect to do by bike. Highlights include my hometown of Bogota, the lovely Cauca Valley in the southwest of the country, and pedalling into the mountains to take in the beautiful coffee landscapes, and huge variety in flora and fauna. It’s impossible not to have an adventure here. Cycling Colombia

EXODUS.CO.UK/MAY

What else? This is a great place to visit by bike because you feel the wind in your face, the land under the wheels, hear the birds in your ears. You really are in the country experiencing its true nature, not inside a car or a bus watching the country go by. I’m really excited by this new trip, as it takes you through so many incredible landscapes: Moon Valley; Rainbow Mountain; the Salt Fields, and Atacama Desert. But also because you are going to cycle in places over 4000m — it’s an amazing feeling in the body. The landscapes and the weather are very changeable so they can give a different experience depending on the specific moment you are passing through. Cycle Chile & Argentina: Atacama to Salta

KEY BOOKING INFORMATION

KEY BOOKING INFORMATION Having chosen the holiday you are interested in, below is some information which you may find useful in relation to your booking and holiday. Full terms and conditions can be found at: www.exodus. co.uk/about-exodus/exodus-bookingconditions. 1. Refer to the Trip Notes The Trip Notes form part of our contract with you and they contain the most up-to-date information about the holiday, including details about the itinerary, inclusions and exclusions. Please download and take the latest version of the Trip Notes with you on your holiday.

2. About the trip Is this trip for you? We aim to provide detailed and accurate information in our documentation so that clients can assess their own suitability and fitness for a specific trip. We ask that you satisfy yourself prior to booking that you are able to complete the itinerary as described in the Trip Notes. All our trips feature Activity Level icons as guides to the type of itinerary and the level of challenge the trip will involve. An explanation of each Activity Level can be found at www.exodus.co.uk/activity-levels . Please let your sales consultant know during the booking process if you have concerns and queries about any aspects of the itinerary. Participation We ask our clients to always abide by the authority of the tour leader. There is an agreement in place between Exodus and our tour leaders, allowing them to exclude any client from part or all of a trip if it unfortunately becomes apparent that they cannot manage particular elements of a trip or is likely to put either them self or other people at risk. It is, however, not a decision that is reached lightly or that is made frequently. Pre-existing medical conditions We ask you to let us know of any pre-existing conditions, illnesses, disabilities or recent surgeries which may affect your safety or other people’s enjoyment of the holiday. Please email CustomerServices@exodus.co.uk to make us aware of any pre-existing medical conditions. Our Trip Notes provide information on whether a particular holiday is considered to be suitable for a person with reduced mobility. There is no upper age limit on our tours, but as most holidays are quite active we may ask clients over the age of 80 a number of questions about their health and fitness. We also require you to advise us of any dietary requirements in advance of a tour. Accommodation Our prices are based on twin-share accommodation which means that if you book on your own, we will arrange for you to share with a person of the same sex. We ask you to satisfy yourself that you do not have any conditions or preferences which may preclude you from sharing a room, and that you speak to your sales consultant if you would like to enquire about a single supplement. Key information to help you prepare Important trip documentation will be provided during the booking process and prior to your holiday. If you have any queries or notice any inaccuracies, please contact Exodus as soon as possible. We are able to provide basic advice to clients regarding passports and visa requirements, but you should check with the appropriate embassy, consulate or the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office for the exact requirements for your chosen tour and date of travel. British nationals require a full passport which is valid for six months after the date of your scheduled return home. The Trip Notes for each holiday provide more detailed information on visa requirements. We recommend that you contact your Medical Professional or a Travel Health Clinic for information about vaccinations or specific health risks in the area to which you are travelling. Please see the Practical For full booking conditions please visit exodus.co.uk

Information section of the Trip Notes for information relating to vaccinations for your specific tour. If you are from an EU member state and are travelling within Europe, you should enquire about the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC); this gives a certain degree of free medical care in many European countries but should not be considered a substitute for travel insurance. The Trip Notes also include information about packing suggestions and essential items that we recommend you bring on your holiday. Risks of adventure travel Whilst we ensure that all activities are operated to the local legal standard and that risk assessments are carried out annually, many of our holidays do carry an element of risk. On many of our tours, the areas are remote and events far less predictable than on a conventional holiday. Health, safety and operational standards, particularly of hotels and transport, are often not up to the levels we experience at home. We require that all the properties and transport we use comply fully with local regulations, but we do not guarantee the same standards as in your home country. If you choose to travel on this type of holiday, you must be prepared to accept that this is all part of the experience. Adverse weather conditions, political situations and a host of other uncontrollable factors can mean a change in itinerary. Outdoor activities are weather dependent to an extent and some can become dangerous in certain conditions. If the leader feels there is any heightened level of risk involved in an activity, they may amend or cancel it as they see fit. It is unlikely that an itinerary would be substantially altered, but if changes are necessary, we will make the best possible alternative arrangements which maintain the integrity of the original itinerary. We will do everything we can to minimise the effect, but we cannot be held responsible for the impact of changes outside our control. Crime and other security risks exist in all countries and whilst travelling in a group is a safeguard, it is not a guarantee of safety. We will take all reasonable care of you and expect that you will take sensible precautions yourself.

3. Booking on a Flight Inclusive or Land Only Basis Exodus holidays can be booked on a Land Only basis or with international flights. When booking on a Flight Inclusive basis, Exodus complies with our responsibilities under the ATOL regime. For all packages (Flight Inclusive or not) we comply with the Package Travel and Linked Travel Regulations 2018. In the event of a significant change to travel plans by an airline, we are responsible for ensuring that you can complete your journeys in a reasonable timeframe and without additional cost to yourself. Please see point 6 for more information on the Package Travel Regulations. Flight costs and supplements Flight Inclusive prices include return flights from a London airport and UK departure tax. Our Flight Inclusive trip prices include a base price for the flights, however this is always subject to availability at the time of booking as airfares are outside of our control. Where the cost of flights is higher than this base price, a flight supplement may be applicable; your sales consultant will be able to advise you if this is the case.

in several ways: directly over the telephone (020 8712 3164), by email using Sales@exodus.co.uk, via our website www.exodus.co.uk and the Live Chat function on our website, or through an approved travel agent. Travel insurance It is an essential condition of joining an Exodus trip that you have an adequate and valid travel insurance policy for the full duration of your trip to cover the cost of medical treatment, cancellation and curtailment, and the activities included in the holiday (including the maximum altitude reached). We recommend that you take out insurance as soon as your booking is confirmed.

5. Payment, cancellations and changes Unless stated otherwise during the booking process or in the full terms and conditions, the following applies: Deposit You will be asked to pay a deposit at the time of booking of at least 10% per person of your selected travel arrangements (minimum ÂŁ150 per person or equivalent). You may also be required to pay on booking for any non-transferable and non-refundable items; your sales consultant will advise you of this during the booking process. Final balance We will invoice you for the remainder of the cost of your holiday, which must be paid prior to 56 days before departure. In certain cases, we may request full payment more than 56 days before departure where, for example, airlines require full payment on booking. Making changes to your trip Please contact Exodus as soon possible if you wish to make a change to your existing booking, wish to change to a different tour or wish to change departure date. We will always endeavour to assist with the requested change, but this is subject to availability and payment may need to be made for non-refundable costs (for example from airlines) and other fees may also be applicable. Cancellation conditions You may cancel your tour at any time by providing written communication from the lead booker. As we start to incur costs from the time the contract is confirmed we will retain your deposit and will apply other cancellation charges as shown below. Please note, however, that for certain travel arrangements the cancellation charge may be higher than those shown; please ask your sales consultant for full details of cancellation charges at time of booking. KEY BOOKING INFORMATION

This link also includes information on our Privacy Policy and our Data Protection Commitment. If we change or cancel your booking We plan the arrangements for your tour many months in advance and may occasionally have to make changes, most of which are minor. When a major change (as outlined in the full terms and conditions on our website) occurs, you will have the choice of either: a) accepting the change; or b) accepting a replacement tour from us of equivalent or similar standard and price (at the date of the change), if we are able to offer you one; or c) cancelling your tour, in which case you shall receive a full refund of all monies paid. Most of our trips are group holidays and require a certain number of participants to operate; we include details of normal group sizes in the Trip Notes and on

our website. In the unlikely event that a trip does not reach the normal minimum, we may be forced to cancel the tour; a decision will be made as early as possible and not later than four weeks before departure. We reserve the right to confirm trips on numbers lower than the minimum indicated and occasionally we may exceed the normal maximum. If at the time of booking your trip is not guaranteed, we strongly recommend that you do not make any non-refundable or nonchangeable travel arrangements.
