A CORSICAN GEM • BEACHFRONT LUXURY IN CORFU • THE BEST BOUTIQUE HOTEL ON LEFKADA THE AQUITAINE COAST • ESCAPE TO CRETE • A TURKISH TALE • PUGLIAN WANDERING

Welcome We’ve always followed our own unique path at Simpson Travel and that road less travelled continues to lead us to some of the loveliest holidays imaginable. It’s my pleasure to share a selection of them with you in this latest On Travel, and also celebrate the relationships that underpin them. It’s the people we know who allow us to flourish and, however the world changes around us, our villa owners, hotel managers and destination experts ensure we hold our steady course – and make the journey inspirational. At the end of November, we launched the idyllic Aquitaine Coast in France: an acquisition that brought the impressive knowledge and experience of Alternative Aquitaine’s dedicated team into our own – and it was a shared appreciation of quality that led us to the family partnership behind Corfu’s beautiful Bella Mare Hotel too. In its own way, each of our new Simpson Hotels in Lefkada, Paxos and Corsica reflects the same union of heritage and a mutual vision of excellence that we value so highly. Meanwhile, Kalkan continues to shine and this year we’re delighted to introduce an even wider choice of stunning villas on the glorious Turquoise Coast, with an overseas team who go above and beyond when it comes to service. However, when it comes to relationships, the most important are with you, our guests. Your holiday experience lies at the heart of every decision we take, which made our 2018 Telegraph Travel Award for Best Villa Operator even more special. If you had the chance to vote, thank you. We’re very much looking forward to living up to it. Best wishes,

Founder and Chairman, Simpson Travel

Get into the groove at... TRIBE ...a flexible programme for 11 to 16 year olds. It’s about Freedom… When they get to a certain age, you’ll know it’s better to work with them rather than against them. And since a mobile phone or tablet is never far from their side, a WhatsApp group seems a sensible place to start. With an open invitation to join a flexible programme that allows for up-time, down-time and those all-important lie-ins, Tribe offers 11 to 16 year olds the freedom they crave in the environments they’ll love.

It’s about Friendship… Friendships can’t be forced but given the right circumstances, they can be forged. They often develop by happy accident while we’re busy doing other things. The Tribe programme provides an average of 30 hours of co-ordinated activities over six days, both on-site and off. Watersports, beach games, workouts, chill-outs, table-tennis, basketball and a trip to Corfu’s fabulous waterpark are just some of the things on offer by day. And with a pizza-and-film night, Wednesday BBQ and an evening out in Kassiopi, it’s easy for everyone to find their groove.

It’s about Family… We know what it’s like. Only two minutes ago, it was bedtime stories and songs in the bath and suddenly they’re slipping through your fingers. You long for precious time together but also a little welcome time apart. Tribe gives older children and teenagers the chance to spread their wings and let off steam while you relax and enjoy the exceptional surroundings at Bella Mare. But shared experiences are important too, and the intimate beach club vibe is a wonderful backdrop for rewarding family time and lazy lunches by the sea. And when you’ve recharged, Simpson Watersports offers you the chance to prove that youth is wasted on the young and join the fun out on the water.

Tribe is available for guests of the Bella Mare Hotel, The House @ Bella Mare, Villa Georgia and Villa Eva. Tribe runs from 14 July to 31 August 2019 with an average of five hours of activities per day, six days a week. Club membership costs £330 for the week; this includes all activities and trips. Bookings must be made prior to departure.

Enjoy Swallows and Amazons adventures at... DOLPHINS ...an imaginative programme for 7 to 10 year olds. We can’t roll back the clock, but Bella Mare's glorious setting reminds us of a time when children were a little less involved with the virtual world and a little more engaged with the real thing. So what better way to introduce our Dolphins to one another than with some Swallows and Amazons adventures, treasure hunts and good old-fashioned beach games? Our experienced Club Leader is highly adept at integrating our most gregarious and independentminded Dolphins, as well as those who take a little longer to find their fins and want to know you’re not too far away.

Simple pleasures

With 30 hours of supervised activity and sessions held at different times on different days, everyone can enjoy a welcome break from the rigid timetabling of school. Beach games, rocket making, scavenger hunts, paddle boarding, arts and crafts, table tennis, movie-making and a group sailing adventure are just some of the exciting activities to look forward to by day. And with a barbecue evening and a pizza-and-film night too, there is plenty to keep even our most playful Dolphins entertained.

Bella BELLA MARE Chrissy Nason-Smith is a travel writer for Silvertraveladvisor.com, the award-winning travel and review website for the over 50s. She spent several years in the late 1970s living and working in Greece, then returned to London where she worked for a wide variety of tour operators before becoming a freelance consultant advising on product quality. She tells us about revisiting Corfu after a 36-year absence.

They say to avoid disappointment you should never go back. So it was with a little trepidation I returned to Corfu after 36 years. Aided by a photographer, I had previously scoured the island looking for new tourist destinations. Two weeks crisscrossing the island from sunrise to sunset merely confirmed everything I had heard about Corfu: a verdant island of breathtaking beauty covered in olive groves and towering cypress trees, wide sweeping sandy bays and small deserted pebbled coves, crystal-clear aquamarine sea and, apart from a few overdeveloped tourist spots not to my taste, a beautiful island. The photographer, by the way, went on to bigger and better things in Hollywood shooting stills for Clint Eastwood movies and after a long career in travel I occasionally return to my first love – travelling in Greece and writing about it. We were staying in Avlaki, just over an hour’s drive from the airport along the winding coastal road where the steep tree-clad hills roll down to the road as it meanders through small villages teetering above coastal hamlets, hidden coves and the shimmering sea below with breathtaking views to the mountainous Albanian coastline at every turn. Long favoured by well-heeled British tourists, this is the Old Corfu of beautiful villas, upmarket tavernas, mega yachts and motor cruisers that nestle discreetly amidst traditional Greece and the stunning scenery for which this area of north-east Corfu is famed. In short, this is very much the area to be. I wasn’t expecting to find such a large unspoiled bay in Corfu, reminiscent of my first visit all these years later. Avlaki Bay, however, is truly unspoiled and the Bella Mare, with its sweeping lawns and tranquil gardens running down to the beach, commands prime position. With a protected wooded nature reserve at the other end of the bay, two tavernas within a few minutes stroll, a handful of houses and a watersports centre, this is old school Greece with the added bonus of the Bella Mare Hotel – a perfect combination for confirmed Grecophiles who also love a bit of luxury!

16 ON TRAVEL

All the spacious rooms and suites overlook the gardens and bay with either a terrace or balcony, some of which are extremely large. Unusually for a hotel, each room has its own discreet kitchenette equipped to make the odd cuppa or snack, a seating area, stylish décor and furnishings with state-of-theart bathrooms. Relaxation is the order of the day at the Bella Mare. For breakfast there’s a wide choice of fare including delicious Corfiot specialities such as Strapatsada (eggs, feta cheese, tomato and oregano baked in the oven). The pool bar/restaurant is open until late evening and most days, after lunch and a glass of wine, we stretched out on the sunloungers overlooking the beach, waves gently lapping against the shore: blissful sleep. Located between bustling Kassiopi and the hamlet of Agios Stephanos, Avlaki is well positioned for exploring – if you can bear to tear yourself away. One day we walked to Agios Stephanos through the wooded nature reserve and had an excellent lunch before ordering a taxi back. Another day we drove to the northern tip of the island, Agios Spiridon, then inland to Old Perithia, the oldest village on the island, now mostly in ruins, where several thriving tavernas – visited by Rick Stein in his Mediterranean Escapes series – cook traditional recipes handed down over the centuries.

Corfiots are rightly proud of their traditional dishes and the food now is far superior to the standard ‘tourist’ fare offered on my previous trip. We ate fantastically well in reasonably priced traditional tavernas but also experienced fine dining in Agni Bay, with prices to match!

...the Bella Mare Hotel - a perfect combination for confirmed Grecophiles who also love a bit of luxury! Inevitably, some areas are more developed than I remember. Little changed, though, was Corfu Town. With its splendid mix of historical influences, particularly Italianate, a visit to Corfu Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, should not be missed. In spite of the intervening years of tourism, the northeast still retains the essence of Corfu: lush green landscapes; stunning secluded bays; waterfront tavernas; picturesque coastal hamlets – its charm undiminished. I loved revisiting Corfu and can’t wait to return, especially now I’ve found the Bella Mare – the perfect beach hotel.

JEWEL OF THE NORTH Cala San Vicente Tucked into a sheltered bay in the far north of Mallorca, Cala San Vicente is in fact not one but four sensational coves or ‘calas’ – each with its own appeal. A small resort has grown up around these lovely beaches, largely impervious to the outside world with a timeless atmosphere that draws a loyal following. With translucent water and soaring cliffs, there’s plenty of drama in the landscape, but a holiday here is principally about quality time in the sunshine with family and friends.

Out and about One of the beauties of Cala San Vicente is the fact you can get around so easily on foot and it would take less than half an hour to walk between all four main coves. Cala Barques at the western end of the bay is our favourite: much quieter than the main Cala Molins, but still with a couple of attractive familyrun restaurants – ideal for a lazy lunch or dinner overlooking the sea. Evenings are especially magical, and as no-one needs to drive, all the more reason to indulge in an award-winning wine from Binissalem. For a complete contrast, nearby Puerto Pollença has a mile-long stretch of sandy beach, a smart new marina and a more international atmosphere that translates into a wide choice of places to eat, drink and watch the world go by.

Villa L'Esplendor, Pollença, Mallorca

Where to stay For all its old-school charm, Cala San Vicente does have a handful of standout contemporary villas, one of the most impressive being stunning Villa L’Esplendor, perfectly positioned within walking distance of the town and the beach. Newly built in palest silver stone, L’Esplendor lives up to its name with walls of glass, an immaculate pool and splendid views of Cap Formentor. Equally conveniently located is Villa Raconet, delightfully cocooned it its own walled garden, with fabulous mountain views from the master terrace, just a 15-minute walk from restaurants, bars and beaches.

THE BEST BOUTIQUE HOTEL ON LEFKADA?

We think so... We’d been keeping an eye out for a Simpson Hotel on Lefkada for many years, but to no avail. That elusive combination of spectacular spot, luxury accommodation and exceptional service was proving hard to come by and, as ever, we were not prepared to compromise. So, when the owner of the Katouna Suites invited us to share his vision for a state-of-the-art hotel in a truly outstanding location, we were over the moon. George’s passion and determination to bring this project to fruition inspired us to share our common goal and enter into a partnership dedicated to introducing the best boutique hotel on Lefkada.

“just a few minutes’ walk from one of the prettiest villages on the island”

Our sophisticated Adult Only retreat stands proudly in the hills above the east coast, offering spectacular views across the sea to the Greek mainland. Located just a few minutes’ walk from one of the prettiest villages on the island, all 10 luxurious suites have a terrace or balcony facing the glittering waters. The stylish bar and dining areas strike the perfect note for relaxation, overlooking the glorious 25m infinity pool and Ionian beyond. Just a five-minute drive above the unpretentious beaches of Ligia, Katouna itself is a very special village. With a delightful church, small central square and two family-run tavernas serving local specialities, this blissfully tranquil spot is utterly bewitching. But if you are looking for something more, vibrant Lefkada Town is just a 15-minute drive away and the coast road to the spectacular west coast beaches is a little further on. With so much in their favour, we think our Katouna Suites will be the toast of the island this summer – we hope you think so too.

INTRODUCING THE AQUITAINE COAST Effortlessly chic, enduringly cool and unmistakably French‌ World-renowned surf and glorious sandy beaches, upmarket seaside towns and superb cuisine; this rich and varied landscape appeals to families and foodies, dare-devils and dawdlers. From the glamour of Biarritz to the laid-back panache of Hossegor and Cap Ferret, the atmosphere along this magnificent stretch of Atlantic coast has got everybody talking.

MEET THE EXPERTS “We are delighted to have joined forces with Alternative Aquitaine, a family business founded by Justin Ashby and Alex Spalding in 2003. Their knowledge and expertise has been invaluable as we launch this exciting new region in France and we are very pleased to welcome them to the Simpson Travel family. If there is anything they don’t know about the Aquitaine Coast (and we haven’t found it yet) then it definitely isn’t worth knowing!”

– Mathew Simpson, Product Director

Justin first discovered the Aquitaine Coast in the mid-1990s when he was tasked with arranging a golf and beach holiday for a group of friends. He was bowled over by the astonishing diversity of the area and kept on returning, falling in love with the stunning beaches, enviable lifestyle and sparkling resorts.

“I remember my first visits to the region. I couldn’t believe this was France. Roaming Hossegor I felt like I was in California or Australia. And then there’s the French Basque Country which is entirely different again - with its own language, cuisine, alpine-style chalets and stunning scenery.” – Justin Ashby

Alex has happy childhood memories of holidays in Arcachon and Cap Ferret. He met Justin in the early noughties and, once he discovered they shared a passion for the region, it wasn’t long before the two of them hatched a plan to exit London and build a holiday rental business specialising in the Aquitaine Coast.

“I’ve been on countless trips to the Aquitaine Coast. My earliest memories are here, and I have enjoyed many action-packed holidays with my own family as they’ve grown up. Justin and I have loved introducing 'our' region to the Simpson team and watching them all fall in love with it. We feel immensely proud of our destination and are very excited about its future as part of the Simpson portfolio.” – Alex Spalding 26 ON TRAVEL

CAP FERRET & THE ARCACHON BAY From the unspoilt beaches and pine forests of the Cap Ferret peninsula, to the serene waters of the Bassin d’Arcachon, where the gentle pace of life ebbs and flows with the tides, this astonishing coastline blends natural beauty and laid-back chic to perfection.

PERFECT PENINSULA, BEAUTIFUL BAY Upmarket Cap Ferret and Arcachon face each other across a dazzling bay, with a regular timetable of boats to glide you back and forth between the two. The Cap Ferret peninsula takes understated style and barefoot chic to a whole new level; with the feel of an exclusive private island, it has endless sandy beaches to suit all tastes and numerous options for elegant waterfront dining. The local speciality is never off the menu and the charming villages ostréicoles are a riot of colour – tiny wooden cottages draped in bougainvillea with oyster beds beyond. Elegant Arcachon feels more traditional, offering a fascinating history and some impressive Belle Époque architecture. The calm waters of the bay are ideal for families and this delightful region has everything you need to please tots, teens and in-betweens. When you’re feeling energetic, climb La Dune du Pilat; standing at 110 metres, Europe’s tallest sand dune seems to float above the water. Magical!

BIARRITZ & THE BASQUE COUNTRY Biarritz is synonymous with the glitz and glamour of the Belle Époque but the wider region is an intoxicating contradiction of picture-postcard towns and villages, hauntingly rugged landscapes, wild Atlantic beaches and idyllic child-friendly coves.

THE BEST OF THE BASQUE A combination of French elegance and sophistication, with a touch of Spanish flamboyance, this fabulously diverse region has a rich cultural heritage and an awe-inspiring landscape. While Biarritz appeals to surfers, bon viveurs and fashionistas, the majestic beauty of its surroundings attract a more considered crowd. The painted chalet-style houses of the Basque villages are a fascinating reflection of the region’s history and the museum in Bayonne is well worth a visit – if you can tear yourself away from the town’s celebrated chocolatiers!

Enjoy... An aperitif at the Hotel du Palais

There are opportunities for canyoning, white water rafting and pony trekking in the foothills of the Pyrenees, whilst the impressive geology of the coastal path is a joy for walkers. Children will love the wellorganised beach clubs in Biarritz along with the aerial walkways and tree-top hideouts at WOW Park, set in 18 acres of botanical gardens near the gentle waters of St Jean de Luz Bay.

This grand palace dating back to 1855 was once the home of Napoleon III. Now Biarritz’s most famous hotel opens its doors to guests, and what better way to sample the refined atmosphere than with a little livener on the terrace?

THE BEAUTY OF EASTERN CRETE... From our enchanting suites in Myrtos to a spectacular beachfront villa by the Libyan Sea, our new properties in Eastern Crete will take you far from the madding crowd.

020 8108 2172 | SIMPSONTRAVEL.COM 31

Myrtos Mare Suites Myrtos is a charming fishing village in the south-east of Crete, away from the main tourist hubs, with its own delightfully unpretentious bohemian vibe. Waterfront tavernas serve mouthwatering local dishes from unfussy menus and the authentic appeal of the village is matched by the genuine charm of the locals. Exploring the cobbled streets is a journey back to another era and a stroll along the seaside promenade is a joy at any time of day. Our affordable suites, just metres from the wide expanse of sandy beach, make a wonderful base for a relaxing holiday.

Simpson Secret – South-East Crete It makes sense to plan ahead at this outstanding villa – with just four weeks still available at the time of going to print – and we are already registering interest for 2020. Ideal for group celebrations and large family gatherings, our wonderfully elegant 12-bedroom Simpson Secret sits in solitary splendour on the shores of the warm Libyan Sea. Complete with summer kitchen and its own beachfront barbecue, it offers the perfect hideaway for family and friends looking to let their hair down and put their feet up in style.

Xerokambos The fine white sands and turquoise waters of Xerokambos have led to its reputation as one of the best beaches in Crete. Yet it remains a wonderfully ‘off the beaten track’ destination with a quiet remoteness that is increasingly hard to find. Our two new villas, Almyra and Kambos, overlook these crystal waters and offer simple, comfortable accommodation within a few minutes’ drive of tavernas and shops – meaning our guests stay far from the madding crowd, without fear of isolation. Villa Almyra

A TURKISH TALE... We’re bowled over by the drama of the landscape, the heady cocktail of east meets west, and the profound warmth and generosity of the people. We’ve watched with excitement as Turkey has bounced back onto the worldwide travel radar and stepped up to its role as one of 2019’s most desirable destinations. We bring you tales of old favourites and fabulous new additions…

Kalkan Regency

FORTY YEARS IN TRAVEL Graham Simpson celebrates at the Kalkan Regency. “Over the last forty years my wife Yianna and I have watched our children grow and marry; we’ve welcomed grandchildren into our lives and seen our family-run business outgrow the kitchen table. And though much has changed in the world of travel, I believe the key ingredients for a truly memorable holiday remain the same: the location, the people and the service. The exceptional Kalkan Regency was the perfect choice to celebrate a significant milestone and I would like to thank the Tomanbay family for extending such a warm welcome to our family. It is their impeccable service and attention to detail that secures the Regency’s place in the hearts of all who visit and the reason why many of our guests return to this glorious hotel again and again.”

DISCOVER I A TURKISH TALE

By the Turquoise Coast... CAPTIVATING KALKAN Cosmopolitan, vibrant and sophisticated, this picturesque harbour town has everything you might wish for in a mainstream resort, while still retaining a magical air of intimacy that belies its lively façade. Set against a breathtaking mountain backdrop, Kalkan’s pretty town centre is a treasure trove of narrow streets, whitewashed houses and inviting boutiques. The choice of restaurants and the quality of food here is exceptional and as the call to prayer echoes across the bay, and the lights of the rooftop restaurants begin to sparkle in the soft evening light, it is hard to imagine a more perfect setting for a candlelit dinner. By day, Turkey’s stunning Turquoise Coast plays host to upmarket beach clubs offering a highly civilised blend of informal dining and topnotch service, but it is perfectly possible to find some splendid isolation; nearby Patara Beach is stunning, with seven miles of uninterrupted sand to roam at will. Our Korsan Suites continue to be a favourite for guests seeking the freedom of a villa combined with the excellent facilities of a boutique hotel. Just a short walk from Kalkan, our two and three-bedroom suites come complete with an open-air jacuzzi and fully-fitted kitchen, giving you the opportunity to dine in, dine out or take advantage of the hotel’s outstanding restaurant. Korsan Suites

Villa Canim

All guests travelling to Kalkan are treated to a complimentary Turkish bath (hamam) and a day trip on Kalkan Regency’s gület boat, Poseidon.

Villa Mars

New to our portfolio, Villa Mars is a wonderfully spacious fourbedroom haven within walking distance of the town offering astonishing views and not just one, but two inviting pools. Sixbedroom Villa Canim is set in the most sought-after part of Kalkan and joins our Exclusive Collection; with private annexe and steps leading to the beach path, it is ideal for a larger family gathering or special celebration.

Head for the hills… ISLAMLAR AND ÜZÜMLÜ In the foothills of the Taurus Mountains, within easy striking distance of Kalkan yet as far removed from its hustle and bustle as you could wish to be, rural life takes precedence and the beautiful Turkish countryside takes centre stage. Islamlar is a place of tranquil tea gardens and pools fed by natural spring water, brimming with trout of such quality that the village’s restaurants are famed for miles around. With unbeatable views across the fertile valleys to the distant white sands of Patara, it attracts those who enjoy the refinements of Kalkan but prefer to dip in and out, retiring to the hills at the end of the day. And for a real taste of tradition, Üzümlü is Islamlar’s atmospheric little cousin; a place where life moves to its own rhythm, changing with the seasons, and the pleasantly hospitable locals are focused more on agriculture than tourism.

Villa Mai

Sazak Evi

We have introduced some fabulous new villas in this area. Sazak Evi is a highly unusual one-bedroom retreat offering a host of luxury features, including two private pools (one inside, one out) and spa facilities to rival a small hotel. Villa Sezin, a stylish two-bedroom house with contemporary interiors, offers stunning views across Patara Beach and facilities that far exceed the expectations for a villa of its size. And Villa Mai is the glamorous two-bedroom vision of an interior designer from Istanbul, brilliantly arranged to capture the views of the mountains and glorious sunsets over Patara Beach.

Mediterranean meets Aegean… THE BOZBURUN PENINSULA

Saranda Beach House

The picturesque Bozburun Peninsula is a magical land of cliff-top walks, tiny hillside hamlets and forgotten ruins accessible only by boat. Fig and olive groves line the hillsides, with fragrant lavender and wild thyme tumbling down towards aquamarine waters and exquisite hidden coves. This really is Turkey at its best – blissfully untouched, with just the right amount of discrete luxury to ensure a holiday here is a joyous escape. Facing the Greek Islands of Symi, Tilos and Rhodes at the point where Mediterranean and Aegean waters collide, the call of the sea is never far away and fishing is a mainstay for the locals here. Söğüt is one of the most perfect seafront villages that we know, with tables set right on the water serving some of the best food on the whole of this pretty peninsula. Villa Manzana

In Söğüt itself we are delighted to have found two sublimely romantic one-bedroom retreats by the water’s edge. Perfect for drifting away to the gentle song of the sea, Saranda Beach House has a private jetty with steps leading directly into the cooling water, whilst the jetty at Tinuka Cottage requires a mere hop and a skip across the beach. Or to really appreciate the mesmerising views of Symi, our new villas in the hills above Söğüt offer the best seats in the house. The sunsets here are unforgettable and both the more traditional Villa Manzana and contemporary Villa Symi have two bedrooms, private pools and terraces and offer a truly ‘road less travelled’ experience.

AND BREATHE...

After the flurry of activity that always precedes a holiday, it’s time to refocus on the whole point of the exercise: relaxing! From traditional Turkish baths to the latest aqua yoga, there are plenty of ways to unwind.

Sun Salutation Yoga relieves travel-weary muscles and calms a crowded mind. Add in the gentle warmth of a Mediterranean morning and the uplifting colours of sunrise for a naturally energising start to your day at The Rou Estate in Corfu. And if you like to wake by the ocean, salute the power of the Atlantic and perfect your practice on the glorious beach at Le Truc Vert, near Cap Ferret in Aquitaine.

Go with the Flow Swap your yoga mat for a paddle board for a new way to challenge your balance. Instructors promise that if you can stand on one leg then you can do SUP yoga, and the calm waters of Lac d’Hossegor are ideal for beginners; once you’ve conquered the wobbles you can try the sea.

Natural Remedies The soothing heat of a pure steam bath cleanses the skin and melts away stress. Indulge in an authentic Turkish hamam session at the Kalkan Regency hotel with our compliments, and complete the experience with a massage overlooking the stunning Turquoise Coast.

Beautifully restored and refurbished, Masseria Le Torri is a wonderfully elegant home away from home near Polignano a Mare and the Adriatic coast, whilst the converted trulli of our Leonardo Trulli Resort, near the World Heritage site of Alberobello, offer a simple and enchanting contrast. Further south, the incomparable Tenuta Mosè is ideal for exploring Lecce and the tip of Italy’s heel, where the majestic Ionian and Adriatic seas meet.

A taste of Puglia Puglia is Italy’s biggest producer of olive oil and wine and the fertile agricultural landscape yields an astonishing array of tempting local produce. Combine a stay of three nights or more at any of our Puglian hotels and receive a complimentary ‘taste of Puglia’ experience at each. Enjoy a cookery lesson at Masseria Le Torri, wine tasting at Leonardo Trulli Resort and for a little more indulgence, a relaxing massage at Tenuta Mosè. Escape to GK BEACH HOTEL

Karen Beddow, mother of three and editor of award-winning travel blog Mini Travellers, tells us why her family chose to spend a week at GK Beach Hotel in Crete. The run-up to the school summer holidays is always a busy time. Work commitments and a frantic whirl of sports days, birthday parties and school bake-offs had left our family of five in need of a week of rest and relaxation; a drop and flop holiday that met everybody’s list of expectations. Top of the kids’ wish-list was a large pool and plenty of friends to play with; I longed for a sunlounger (preferably near a beach) where I could get stuck into some of the books that had been gathering dust on my bedside table for months; and my husband wanted a bit of sun, a bit of shade, and some decent WiFi to sort out any work emergencies that may arise. GK Beach Hotel in Crete ticked all the boxes.

52 ON TRAVEL

INSPIRATION | ESCAPE TO GK BEACH HOTEL

Chania

This 24-suite hotel sits right by the coast in western Crete and to my delight I found I could amble the 100 metres from suite to beachfront sunlounger and be reclining with my book open in under a minute. Tick! The children made friends quickly and the atmosphere around the pool echoed the one we had experienced at other Simpson properties – Mousses Crèche and Children’s Club in Lefkada and the Kalkan Regency in Turkey – a lovely community of like-minded people sharing a few drinks and some laughs, together with top tips on local restaurants and trips to Chania too. It’s actually quite a simple concept, yet, save for hotels with Simpson, can be really quite hard to find. Whilst we didn’t want or need to do too much on this trip, and we actually found it quite hard to leave the hotel, our visit to GK Beach would not have been complete without a trip to Chania. This lovely harbour town, with its quirky backstreet tavernas and port side restaurants, is only 25 minutes away and a waterside dinner in the warm light of the setting sun really did complete our week. In the words of Lily, my eldest:

“It was epic! We made some lovely friends and I spent all week in the swimming pool - when can we go back?” I have to say I agree.

Ringing the changes at GK Beach Hotel After a long and successful partnership with the owners of GK Beach, 2019 sees Simpson Travel take over the management of this much-loved hotel. In addition to some lovely new decorative touches, we have added a dedicated hotel minibus offering exciting day-trips. This enticing corner of Crete will be even easier to explore and we strongly recommend a trip to the historic Venetian harbour in Chania and a lazy dinner at one of the many delightful tavernas by the water’s edge.

TOUCHED BY THE PAST From time to time we offer our Loyalty Club members a sneak preview of our new properties. Last year, Michael Shaw visited Masseria Le Torri in Puglia and kindly shares his impressions with On Travel.

Arriving at Masseria Le Torri and entering the courtyard past cacti sentinels, it was hard not to feel an immediate sense of history, a strong sense of previous occupancy and a sense of lives past lived. Standing square before us, its white-washed shape silhouetted against a perfect sky, it commanded a great presence over the level surrounding countryside, the stonework defences poised above the entrances evidence of its fortification and, above it all, a bell once used to give the call to worship or, perhaps, to warn of approaching pirates or troublesome locals. In the reception room, a pair of old golf clubs lay casually propped against the wall in one of the old feeding troughs, patiently awaiting another game while, passing through to the kitchen, an open, faded hand-written recipe book and other aged domestic artefacts still held their own amongst 21st-century upgrades. In our bed we slept, watched over by saints and angels, aged fresco faces a reminder of our room’s earlier holy status as a chapel. An open book sat on a table, a pair of thin gold-rimmed spectacles left lying on top as if the wearer might return at any moment. We read our novels on Kindles and checked the news on iPads, the gap between now and then never more apparent and yet, on a stormy day, when the cloudless azure heavens and sunshine of holiday brochure temptations gave way to brooding, elemental skies, the past seemed just around the corner, never far away.

“Words are easy, like the wind; Faithful friends are hard to find.” – The Passionate Pilgrim

Slow Food...

A TASTE OF TRADITION In 1986, outraged by a proposal to open Italy’s first McDonald’s restaurant near the Spanish Steps in Rome, Carlo Petrini sowed the seeds for a new – or, more correctly, old – approach to eating: Slow Food. Petrini couldn’t stop McDonald’s, but the Slow Food movement is now global, based on the idea that quality local ingredients and traditional regional dishes should prevail, and that neither the preparation nor the consumption of a meal should be rushed. Holiday meals offer the perfect opportunity to embrace this philosophy, with simple local produce prepared at leisure and enjoyed in the best of company to nourish the soul as well as the body, so we’ve picked out a few places that truly reflect Slow Food values for you to enjoy.

PUGLIA, ITALY Asked to hazard a guess about the biggest wine and olive oil producing region in Italy, most people tend to say Tuscany, but in fact it’s Puglia. Its signature red is the inky-dark Primitivo, an inspired pairing with orecchiette alla Pugliese. Food is Puglia’s great love – passion, hospitality and tradition combined – and lunchtimes are sacrosanct, with pretty much everything shut from 1pm to 4pm as families have a proper meal together. Recipes are classic Slow Food style, bursting with fresh, seasonal ingredients, the rich notes of local olive oil running through them. Farmers’ markets are a place of weekly pilgrimage for locals and lucky visitors alike.

WHERE TO STAY: Villa Floridita is perfectly placed for exploring Gallipoli and the stunning coastline of Salento in southern Puglia.

58 ON TRAVEL

AKYAKA, TURKEY The mellow waters of the Kadin Azmak River flow through the heart of Akyaka and the restaurants lining its banks lend themselves beautifully to lingering breakfasts, leisurely lunches and unhurried dinners by its cooling waters. There is a distinctly Turkish vibe in this highly atmospheric town which joined Cittaslow in 2010. The initiative, inspired by the Slow Food movement, places its focus on simple, locally sourced ingredients and aims to improve the quality of life in towns by slowing the overall pace, respecting nature and promoting authenticity. Local seafood, fresh fish plucked straight from the water and mouth-watering bowls of mezze, brimming with colourful local produce; this is a celebration of slow food at its finest.

WHERE TO STAY: The Shepherd’s House in Akyaka overlooks the magnificent panorama of Gökova Bay.

AVITHOS, KEFALONIA Slow Food may have grown to become a global phenomenon, but its success remains firmly grounded in local traditions and skills. In 2018, Kefalonian Panos Sarris won the prestigious Flos Olei 2018 award, meaning that his Panochori olive oil is ranked amongst the top 500 in the world. Panos attributes his success to happy memories of family meals: “As children we would meet at the olive grove. At lunch time Grandpa would break the bread before pouring the thick green olive oil over it. It smelt like freshly picked herbs. This pure taste of fresh virgin olive oil that filled our childhood is what we aim to seal in every bottle.”

WHERE TO STAY: Sample Panos’ oil and delicious cooking at his taverna close to Avithos Beach Estate.

ABOVE AND BEYOND It takes a special kind of person to be a Simpson Travel representative. From ever-extending holidays to elusive cuddly toys, colourful keepsakes to beloved companions, discover some of the ways our team went above and beyond their duties last year.

KEEPING COOL Rather than have a pool out of action for a couple of days in 40°C heat, everresourceful Corfu representative Jackie just slipped on her scuba-diving kit and dived down to replace a faulty filter cover herself.

FABULOUS FUSIONS

SOFT TOY SOS

Our Skopelos representative, Marcia Whitworth, picks ingredients from her own garden to make a zingy barbecue marinade for her guests. An accomplished artist, Marcia also paints pebbles to give as beautiful keepsakes.

Mallorca representative Sonia turned detective to track down a much-loved giraffe toy. She contacted the villa owner who put her in touch with the cleaner and then the laundry service, where, thankfully, lonely Giraffe was found hanging by his tail to dry. One very relieved mum!

BEHIND THE SCENES I ABOVE AND BEYOND

PURR-FECT PAXOS Guests at Olive Cottage fell hopelessly in love with a particularly affectionate stray cat this summer, and persuaded our Paxos representative, Frances, to help them take it home. The process was far from easy, but Paxo now has a new and very loving home in the south of England.

SWEET MEMORIES Karen at Avithos Beach Estate is almost as passionate about avoiding waste as she is about her beloved Kefalonia, turning a bumper crop of figs into delicious jam as a farewell gift for her guests. And once the jam was finished, perfectly formed gingerbread men were waiting in line!

NEVERENDING HOLIDAY Many guests travel regularly with us, but after having such a blissful week at White Orchid, Mr and Mrs Roberts extended their holiday for another seven days, returned home then promptly came back for another fortnight. Sivota representative Stuart co-ordinated all the logistics from replacement medical prescriptions to flight re-bookings, and is looking forward to seeing them again in 2019!

GIVING BACK Organising holidays is generally a happy business, and at Simpson Travel we feel very lucky to be able to spend our days doing something we love. However, an appreciation of our privileged position makes us all the more aware of the plight of those less fortunate, which is why we continue to support a range of charities in the hope that our donations will assist their invaluable work. In 2018, we focused particularly on charities for disadvantaged and terminally ill children. Here is a snapshot of some of the charities we had the pleasure of collaborating with in 2018.

TOGETHER FOR SHORT LIVES Together for Short Lives is an inspirational charity that supports children with life-limiting conditions across the UK. In 2018, we continued to donate £2 for every completed holiday questionnaire, raising over £11,500. Several of our valiant team also took part in the Stonehenge Night Trek in September, walking 33 kilometres, and raising nearly £2,500. Togetherforshortlives.org.uk

THE SPINATHON Following the success of Spinathon 2017, last year saw our UK team take to the saddle once more. We donated two holidays for auction, and clocked up hundreds of kilometres, helping to raise £13,000 alongside other participating companies, with funds going to The Samaritans and Child Bereavement UK.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Last year we continued our annual tradition of sending 100 boxes filled with goodies to Operation Christmas Child. Run by Samaritan’s Purse, this initiative gives boxes filled with toys, hygiene items and school supplies to children in need across the world. samaritans-purse.org.uk

CHARITY AUCTIONS In 2018, we donated holidays for auction prizes to 12 different children’s charities, including Together for Short Lives, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Sparks, REACT, Dreamflight, The Rwandan Orphans Project and the Sick Children’s Trust, raising over £15,000.

OVERSEAS Our overseas teams have also done a marvellous job raising money for local and national charities. Our Greece team alone raised an amazing €10,000, making a fantastic contribution to The Smile of the Child, a very worthy organisation supporting vulnerable children.

BEHIND THE SCENES I WRITING COMPETITION

WRITE YOUR WAY TO A HOLIDAY The brief for our 2018 writing competition was simple: Tell us about a place you visited on your Simpson Travel holiday... and the entries were insightful, humorous and beautifully presented – much like our guests! It was very hard to choose between them, but after much debate, a winner and two runners-up were selected. Our principal judge this year was popular travel writer, Silver Travel Advisor and confirmed Grecophile, Chrissy Nason-Smith.

THE RUNNERS-UP BLUE SKIES AND PINK BOUGAINVILLEA – by Andrew Balchin

ROYAL WEDDING – by Susan Enticott

Andrew sent us a delightful piece about a meal at a local taverna on Paxos. His carefully chosen words were so evocative, we could practically feel the sea breeze and taste the delicious grilled vine tomatoes.

Susan entertained us with a clever and thoughtful story about watching the Royal Wedding amongst the hustle and bustle of Vamos in Crete. We loved how Susan was able to perfectly capture such a unique moment in time.

THE WINNER Our 2018 winner was Bob Walters, with an eloquent yet humorous piece about his holiday to the Purple Apricot Hotel. When discussing Bob’s piece, Chrissy revealed that –

“it made me smile and reignited my own special memories of Paxos”.

The perfect recipe for a Greek holiday – by Bob Walters “Take a small sun-drenched island smothered with olives basking in an azure Ionian sea. Add six perfectly aged mature couples from the four corners of England and blend them together slowly, adding white or red wine to taste. Later add cream and spread evenly on sunbeds under a medium heat of 25 to 29 degrees. Do not allow them to burn, turning regularly to achieve an even colour on both sides. Each night remove from the heat and allow to rest. Repeat this over a 7-day period.

Add generous amounts of Greek hospitality, rugged coastline, white pebbled beaches and stunning views. Refreshing Greek dips may be welcome throughout, in private pools or secluded coves. Inevitably at the end of the holiday this perfectly constructed dish will separate, however the taste, smells and flavours of Paxos will linger with them forever. They have experienced the magic of Simpson’s Paxos garnished with Steph and David’s unforgettable Purple Apricot preserve.”
