on the cover
One of Dubuque’s most iconic landmarks sits atop a limestone bluff at the Mines of Spain. The Julien Dubuque Monument was built in 1897 and serves as a burial spot for Julien Dubuque. Originally, he was buried by the Mesquakie tribe with tribal honors beneath a log mausoleum at the site where the monument now stands.

From great pizza to tasty beer, this city has something for everyone. We enjoyed discovering local spots that were both casual and fancy, and everything in between. Breakfast meals, burritos, delicious coffee, and tasty treats - get ready to be full by the end of your weekend trip!
I love visiting Farmers' Markets wherever I'm traveling, and the Dubuque Farmers' Market was so much fun! There were all kinds of vendors, great coffee, and endless food options. We decided to grab breakfast
from the Adobo Mexican Grill food truck, and it was incredible. Mouth-watering breakfast burritos are the best way to start the day! (Pro Tip: Get the HUGE cinnamon rolls. They were the best I've ever had.)
Looking for a casual and authentic eatery? Head over to Europa Haus Restaurant and Bier Stube. When I tell you this was the best bratwurst and beer I've ever had, I'm not joking. The atmosphere is super laid back and feels like a place where the bartender knows everyone who walks through the doors. We ordered brats, sauerkraut, and red cabbage and loved every bite.
My dad works in Dubuque and told me to check out Calico Bean Market. I'm so glad he did because it was the most fun place to browse! They have everything food and treat-related that you would ever want. This would be a great place to gift shop for the foodie in your life! We loved looking at all of the sprinkle options, olive oils, and random goodies.
L. May Eatery was such a delightful surprise. We jumped onto Google Maps to look for a local dinner spot close to our hotel and chose L. May Eatery. The food and atmosphere were incredible! We're so glad we took a chance on this spot within
walking distance and spent the evening here. Lovely wait staff, a cozy atmosphere, and tasty food.
When looking for places to eat in new places, we love finding local spots that are also doing good. Convivium Urban Farmstead is a non-profit that is improving life through food. They grow a lot of their own veggies and herbs and even have chickens for their eggs. We loved our breakfast and the kind wait staff, and our coffee was delicious. (Pro Tip: Take a walk around the grounds after your meal. You can read the signs and learn more about the non-profit and process.)

Find yourself on a walkable night out in downtown Dubuque, where you can grab a bite to eat and try for a high score on your favorite arcade game. You're bound to have a fun time that involves more than just drinks.
Indulge in good food and an even better beer at 7 Hills Brewing Company. I highly recommend a flight to find your favorite. Promise me you won't just stop at beer; you have to get some food as well. I loved the 7 Hills Burger and dill pickle chips. Talk about mouth-watering goodness.
Next up, Backpocket Dubuque. More than just a local brewery, it's an arcade! Located on the lower level, you'll find vintage arcade games. This is the spot to go when you want entertainment and a few drinks.
Lastly, Gary Dolphin's Iron Bar is located next door. It has an indoor bar setting and an outdoor patio vibe with a fire pit, a large projector screen, and oversized outdoor games like chess.
