Soak up Charleston history at these key attractions
Learn the history of Charleston and see some of the city’s most beautiful public spaces by visiting these area landmarks. These attractions are free or low cost. Angel Oak Estimated to be 300-400 years old, the majestic Angel Oak is worth a visit. The oak tree towers 65 feet high and has a circumference of 25.5 feet. Its area of shade is 17,000 square feet and its largest limb has a circumference of 11.5 feet, and a length of 89 feet. No admission to visit the park and take photos, plus there’s a gift shop and picnic area. 3688 Angel Oak Road, Johns Island
Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge Opened in July 2005, this cable-stayed bridge spanning the Cooper River has become an iconic symbol of Charleston. This architectural marvel has a 2-mile bike/pedestrian lane called Wonders’ Way. Free parking is available on East Bay Street in downtown Charleston and also on the Mount Pleasant side at Memorial Waterfront Park so you can walk the bridge for a bird’s eye view of the Charleston harbor.

Fort Moultrie Visit Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island for a greater understanding of history from the American Revolution through World War II. Insider tip: Walk the beach there for stunning views of Fort Sumter and the Charleston skyline from a distance. 1214 Middle St., Sullivan’s Island
Fort Sumter Calling all history buffs! Visit the spot where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Located in the Charleston harbor, Fort Sumter also played key roles in the Revolutionary War against the British and was Charleston’s main defense from seaside attacks. In 1966, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can visit the fort via ferry operated by Fort Sumter Tours. Tours depart from the Aquarium Wharf downtown or at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant.

Marion Square Spanning more than 6 acres in the heart of downtown Charleston, Marion Square was established as a parade ground for the state arsenal under construction on the north side of the square. It is best known as the former Citadel Green because The Citadel occupied the arsenal from 1843 until 1922, when the military college moved to Charleston’s west side. The name was then changed to Marion Square, in honor of Francis Marion. This city park hosts a number of events and festivals throughout the year. 329 Meeting St., Charleston
Rainbow Row Rainbow Row is the name for a series of colorful historic houses located north of Tradd Street and south of Elliot Street on East Bay Street. It is referred to as Rainbow Row for the pastel colors used to paint the houses. It is a common tourist attraction and is one of the most photographed areas of Charleston. You may hear a number of tales as to why the houses are painted so colorfully. Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon The Old Exchange is a must-see for all Charleston visitors. During your visit, you will discover this building’s integral role in our country’s quest for independence and its important service to our young nation. The Old Exchange began its existence as a public building and remains so today. Take a tour (admission: $5-$10) to see various aspects of Charleston history during the Colonial and Revolutionary eras and put into context the people and events of the period. 122 East Bay St., Charleston

Charles Pinckney National Historic Site Visitor Center Charles Pinckney was a principal author and a signer of the U.S. Constitution. This historic site is a 28-acre remnant of Pinckney’s Snee Farm, a rice and indigo plantation. Located on site is an 1828 coastal cottage that serves as a museum and visitor center. Exhibits tell the story of Pinckney and his contributions to the United States as a young and emerging nation as well as detailing 18th-century plantation life for free and enslaved people at Snee Farm. 1254 Long Point Road, Mount Pleasant
St. Michaels Church & Graveyard St. Michael’s Church is the oldest church edifice in the City of Charleston, standing on the site of the first Anglican Church built south of Virginia. In the 1680s, a small wooden church – the first in the new town of Charles Town – was built on this spot for the families of the Church of England and named St. Philip’s. John Rutledge, the first governor of South Carolina and signer of the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution is buried in the graveyard here. 80 Meeting St., Charleston
The Battery The Battery is a landmark defensive seawall and promenade in Charleston, famous for its stately antebellum homes. Named for a Civil War coastal defense artillery battery at the site, it stretches along the lower shores of the Charleston peninsula, bordered by the Ashley and Cooper rivers. 2 Murray Blvd., Charleston
Riley Waterfront Park Riley Waterfront Park is a 12-acre park along a one-half mile stretch of the Cooper River in Charleston. The public park has a pier with swings and it’s a great place to see some dolphins and snap some photos of the harbor. A Day at the Beach Your Guide to Charleston’s Beaches By Holly Fisher
If you came to Charleston looking to unwind, look no further than one of our local beaches. The cares of the world melt away when your feet hit the sand and you hear the melodic sounds of ocean waves. Soak up the laid-back vibe of Folly Beach, the family friendly feel of Isle of Palms or the unspoiled ocean views at Sullivan’s Island. Each beach has its own character and appeal, so review our guide and then decide which beach you want to visit – or visit them all! FOLLY BEACH
This barrier island beach has a laid-back atmosphere and is frequented by locals and surfers. With plenty of restaurants, surf shops, hotels and beach rentals, Folly Beach is a great place to spend some time. Plus, Folly is a short drive from the heart of downtown Charleston with all its attractions and activities. Note, summertime traffic can be extra heavy. If you’re not staying on the beach, plan to arrive by 10 a.m. Where to park: Limited parking is available at Folly Beach County Park (1100 W. Ashley Ave.), so plan to arrive early to secure a spot. Parking fees vary by season. The most you’ll pay is $10 per vehicle Monday to Friday and $15 on Saturday and Sunday. You can easily access the beach via the park, where you’ll be close to restrooms, outdoor showers, a snack bar and lifeguards. Rules to know: Alcohol is not allowed on Folly Beach. Dogs are not allowed on the beach from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 1 through Sept. 30. At other times, dogs much be leashed; pick up after 16 TRAVELERofCharleston.com SPRING 2022

While staying at Folly, he composed the classic opera “Porgy and Bess.”
ISLE OF PALMS
Located just a few minutes from Mount Pleasant, the Isle of Palms has plenty of amenities and is a great family-friendly beach option. This stretch of public beach has a selection of shops, restaurants and bars, plus public restrooms. The area of Ocean Boulevard from 10th Avenue to 14th Avenue is set aside for beachgoers and is known as “Front Beach.” If you’re not staying on Isle of Palms, plan to arrive early. The Isle of Palms Connector backs up quickly with beach traffic.
SULLIVAN’S ISLAND
The Town of Sullivan’s Island, a barrier island north of the Charleston harbor, has only about 2,000 residents. With its unspoiled views and terrific dining options, Sullivan’s is a favorite among Charleston area locals. The beach has few short-term rentals and no hotels, so plan a day trip to this beach, also located just a few minutes from Isle of Palms. Where to park: Parking can be a problem if you arrive after 10 a.m. There are no public parking lots, and street parking is allowed only on one side of the street. Be sure to obey posted signs and don’t park in any private yards or driveways. Rules to know: Sullivan’s Island has no public restrooms or showers and there are no lifeguards on duty. Alcohol is not permitted on the beach. All dogs visiting the island must have a dog permit and should wear the town-issued collar while on Sullivan’s Island. Permits and collars are available at Town Hall, 2050-B Middle St.; 843-883-3198. Dogs are not allowed on the beach from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 1 through Sept. 30. More info and complete beach rules: sullivansisland.sc.gov
Where to park: Parking is regulated along the public rights-of-way between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Visitors can park their vehicles on any road right-of-way within the Beach Parking District unless it has been marked with a “no parking” sign. Metered street parking is available along with paid parking in the Municipal Parking Lots and at Isle of Palms County Park. For access to picnic tables, showers, restrooms, seasonal lifeguards and a playground, you might want to park at the Isle of Palms County Park. Rules to know: Dogs are allowed off leash on the beach from 5-9 a.m. April 1 to Sept. 14 and from 4 p.m. to 10 a.m. Sept. 15 to March 31. At all other times, dogs must be on a leash – even in the water. No smoking, alcoholic beverages, glass containers, fires or fireworks. Single-use plastics and Styrofoam products are also prohibited. Sullivan’s Island fun fact: This Island has a long military history of protecting the Charleston harbor from invaders. Visit Fort Moultrie – originally built with palmetto logs in 1776 – to learn how it has been restored to reflect the story of American seacoast defense up through World War II.
KIAWAH ISLAND Another of Charleston’s beautiful beaches is Kiawah Island. Much of the island and its beaches are private, but you can access a portion of public beachfront via Kiawah Beachwalker Park on the west end of the island. It has restrooms, picnic areas with grills, and boardwalks. Parking fees vary by season. The most you’ll pay is $10 per vehicle Monday to Friday and $15 on Saturday and Sunday. Lifeguards are on duty seasonally, and, at the park, dogs must be leashed at all times.
IOP fun fact: Loggerhead sea turtles often lay their eggs at the Isle of Palms from May to mid-August. From July until October, the loggerhead hatchlings emerge from their nest at night and make their way to the ocean. Do not disturb any nests or any hatchlings and be sure to fill any holes you dig on the beach. If you’re staying on the beach, be sure to turn out your lights at night.

Deep Water Vineyard
For When You Need to ‘Wine-Down’ in Wide Open Spaces By Holly Fisher
A
fter walking all over downtown Charleston, playing in the ocean, or touring museums and attractions, it’s time to unwind with a glass of wine. Just on the outskirts of Charleston is Wadmalaw Island, a lush landscape of mossed-covered oak trees and unspoiled vistas.
You won’t find hotels, shopping centers or grocery stores, but you will find Deep Water Vineyard, the only domestic winery in Charleston. The vineyard is both rural and relaxing. A place to take a deep breath, sip a glass of local wine, and experience vacation as it should be. Deep Water Vineyard wine is made from muscadine grapes – one of the only truly native grapes to the United States. Owners Andrea and Jesse Freiwald – who purchased the vineyard in 2015 – have continued to expand upon the vineyard’s five signature wines, including a partnership with a California grower to get access to grapes that won’t grow here in the South. They now offer 20 wine varieties, including seasonal favorites like a strawberry wine and a jalapeño wine. Over the last couple of years, Deep Water expanded its offerings from wine, adding mead to its menu. It’s all thanks to Andrea’s newfound beekeeping hobby and a nationwide resurgence of mead making. Mead – part of the wine family – is fermented honey water. It’s 20 TRAVELERofCharleston.com SPRING 2022
arguably the world’s oldest fermented beverage, Andrea says. What started as an experiment during the COVID pandemic, “spiraled, thankfully, out of control,” Andrea says. “We have three meads on tap at all times. People really love it and can’t get enough of it.” Some of Deep Water’s many mead varieties are similar to beers and seltzers, ranging from tropical and light, like an IPA; to coffee flavored and dark, like a stout. They’ve also been infusing the mead with all sorts of fun flavors, Andrea says, including bourbon barrels from local Firefly Distillery for a mead that’s smokey and sweet. To celebrate the success of their Bears Bluff Meadery, Deep Water is hosting its first Mead-ival Festival in May. They’ll debut three new bottled meads while serving up favorite drafts plus renaissance-themed food, vendors and activities. Mead isn’t the only thing that’s new at Deep Water. Andrea says they used the last two years to tackle some remodeling and renovations projects. During COVID, they opened an outdoor wine tasting area. Visitors loved it, so they’re adding a permanent outdoor bar. “The silver lining of COVID was we had to rethink

our business,” Andrea says. “We started to think outside the box, and things that were hassles ended up being great things.” Now, the team at Deep Water Vineyard is ready to welcome visitors for the spring and summer season. Enjoy a laid-back wine tasting during the week or come out on Saturdays for the weekly Wine-Down with a food truck, wine tastings and live music. The overall vineyard vibe is relaxing and family friendly (dogs welcome too!). “We’re a respite in the county,” Andrea says. “It’s a pretty special place when you pass that bridge and realize there are no grocery stores or gas stations and it’s all rural.”

One of the most picturesque waterways in the area, Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant is a great spot for kayaking or simply enjoying drinks and a fresh seafood dinner with a water view.
Area plantations have tours and special exhibits that offer visitors an eye-opening understanding and deeper education of slave life in the Lowcountry. Local plantations include Boone Hall Plantation, Drayton Hall, Magnolia Plantation, McLeod Plantation and Middleton Place.
Charleston has so much to offer that it can be a little overwhelming trying to figure out what to see and do first. If you only have a short time to visit or if it’s your first time in the Holy City, there are a few things you just can’t miss. RAINBOW ROW
If you’re walking down Market or King streets, take a detour to Rainbow Row and Battery Park starting on East Bay Street. Rainbow Row includes a stretch of 13 brightly colored historic homes that you’ve probably seen in famous photographs. Rainbow Row also sits along the Battery, a Civil Warera defensive seawall and promenade along the Charleston harbor. Continue along the Battery to White Point Garden, a public park on the tip of the peninsula. Walk the park to see several statues and monuments.
WALKING HISTORY TOUR

HISTORIC HARBOR
Take a harbor tour for a view of Charleston’s skyline and a closer look at the spot where the Civil War began. On April 12, 1861, Confederate artillery opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston's harbor. Union soldiers surrendered the fort 34 hours later and tried for nearly four years to take it back.

Take the picturesque drive to Johns Island to stand under the branches of the majestic Angel Oak tree. Part of a public city park, its canopy of branches spans 17,000 square feet. The tree is located at 3688 Angel Oak Road.

I
n 1864, the H. L. Hunley became the world’s first successful combat submarine with the sinking of the USS Housatonic. Then, the history-making vessel and her crew vanished, slipping into the history books as a great mystery. For more than a century, treasure hunters and history buffs searched in vain for the submarine. In 1995, an expedition led by Clive Cussler’s National Underwater Maritime Agency finally located the lost submarine and her eight-man crew. But it would be several more years before the Hunley was meticulously extracted from the sea. On Aug. 8, 2000, she was gently lifted from her ocean grave near Sullivan’s Island and delivered to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center for study, excavation and preservation. Since then, scientists working to save the legendry submarine have made fascinating discoveries about that period in history and the Hunley’s eight-man crew. Bringing the Hunley back to land was a major engineering feat, and news of the discovery traveled quickly around the world. The submarine and the hundreds of artifacts found onboard continue to undergo preservation work while archaeologists use the historical clues they found to piece together those final moments. The Hunley’s journey through time has been marked by innovation, courage and tragedy. Her against-all-odds tale has spanned the centuries and is one of the greatest maritime mysteries in recent history.
