In recent years, Ajman has been slowly gaining attention as a tourist destination, and those who venture beyond the usual tourist hotspots are rewarded with a treasure trove of hidden gems.

The Travel Essence Magazine team had the privilege of exploring Ajman’s tourism offering at the invitation of the Ajman Tourism Development Board. With a day that encompassed a packed itinerary, we were delighted to note just how many gems lay hidden only a short drive away from Dubai. Let's take a journey through some of what we discovered about Ajman's enchanting tourist attractions, that you’ll not only take you through the Emirate’s rich history, but challenge you to embrace the opportunity for relaxation…

◊ AJMAN MUSEUM - A GLIMPSE INTO THE PAST

For travellers seeking to immerse themselves in Ajman's rich heritage, the Ajman Museum is an ideal starting point. Housed within an 18th-century fort, this historical gem provides a captivating narrative of the emirate's transformation from a humble fishing village to a bustling modern city. The museum showcases an extensive collection of artifacts, traditional Emirati weaponry, and vivid displays that recreate the traditional way of life. Visitors can witness the evolution of the region's architecture, from its iconic wind towers to contemporary skyscrapers, reflecting Ajman's journey through time.

◊ AL ZORAH NATURE RESERVE - A HAVEN FOR NATURE ENTHUSIASTS

Our day began with kayaking here, as the group escaped the urban bustle, venturing into the serene embrace of Al Zorah Nature Reserve. This protected area is an ecological haven, comprising mangroves, salt flats, and lagoons that serve as a sanctuary for numerous plant and animal species. Nature enthusiasts can explore the reserve's diverse ecosystem on guided tours, kayak through the winding waterways, or enjoy birdwatching as a myriad of migratory birds find refuge here. The untouched beauty of Al Zorah provides a peaceful retreat for visitors seeking solace in nature's embrace.

◊ DHOW YARD - A LIVING TRIBUTE TO MARITIME TRADITION

Embracing its maritime heritage, Ajman is home to one of the last remaining dhow yards in the UAE. Dhows are traditional Arabian wooden sailing vessels, once vital for trade and fishing. At the Dhow Yard, visitors can witness skilled craftsmen meticulously handcrafting these vessels using age-old techniques. The atmosphere is imbued with the aroma of freshly cut wood and resonates with the rhythmic sounds of hammers and chisels. Witnessing the birth of these majestic vessels is a testament to Ajman's reverence for its maritime roots.

◊ AJMAN BEACHES - TRANQUILITY BY THE SEA

While Ajman may not boast the grandeur of neighbouring Dubai's towering skyscrapers, it compensates with its pristine, unspoiled beaches. The emirate's coastline stretches for miles, offering soft, golden sands and turquoise waters. Ajman Corniche in particular, is a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike. Stroll along the palm-fringed promenade, take in the breathtaking views of the glistening Gulf, and enjoy a leisurely day by the water. The beaches of Ajman offer a perfect setting for relaxation and rejuvenation.

◊ MOWAIHAT ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITESTEPPING BACK IN TIME

History aficionados will be enthralled by the Mowaihat Archaeological Site, which dates back over 4,000 years. Unearthed artifacts, including pottery, tools, and ancient burial sites, offer a captivating glimpse into the lives of the region's earliest inhabitants. The site's excavation has shed light on Ajman's prehistoric past and contributed to a deeper understanding of the UAE's ancient civilizations.

◊ SHEIKH ZAYED MOSQUE AJMAN - A SERENE PLACE OF WORSHIP

While the UAE is known for its grand mosques, Ajman's Sheikh Zayed Mosque stands out for its elegant simplicity. Named after the founding father of the UAE, the mosque's pristine white facade and graceful domes exude an air of tranquility and spirituality. Visitors are welcomed to explore the interior adorned with intricate calligraphy and splendid chandeliers. The mosque's serene ambiance provides a space for reflection and offers a glimpse into the region's Islamic traditions.

AL-MURABBA WATCHTOWER - A MONUMENTAL HERITAGE

The Al-Murabba Watchtower, standing tall as a sentinel overlooking the sea, is a historical gem. Dating back to the 19th century, this watchtower played a vital role in safeguarding Ajman's shores. Today, it serves as a reminder of the emirate's past and offers panoramic views of the city's coastline. The tower's strategic location makes it an excellent spot to capture stunning sunsets, a sight not to be missed.

Ajman's tourist attractions may be lesser-known, but their charm lies in their authenticity and cultural significance. Beyond the glitz and glamour, Ajman captivates visitors with its intriguing stories, unspoiled natural wonders, and warm hospitality. As this hidden gem gains recognition on the local and global tourism map, travellers are invited to embark on a journey of discovery, where the past meets the present, and where modernity finds harmony with tradition. Whether you seek history, nature, or relaxation, Ajman promises an unforgettable and enriching experience for all who venture to explore its delights.
