Particularly excited about this Issue after what was yet another epic Summer of exploration for many, with clear signs that revenge travel is in fact a real thing. This is also spurred on by a genuine desire for more of us to consider the opportunities that come with researching ways in which to make exploration and remote working more of a prominent feature in our daily lives – if at all possible!

Travellers are also naturally seeking authentic experiences, sustainable tourism, and digital detox destinations, with Africa and the Middle East, continuing to enchant globally minded explorers of all ages with its diverse landscapes and vibrant cultures. With the topic if climate change management, and ongoing discourse on how tourism dollars can provide meaningful experiences to travel consumers, it’s safe to say we can expect a surge in eco-tourism and immersive safaris and coastal excursions, with conversations around how to ensure sustainable practices that benefit communities while reducing carbon footprints associated with the upward movement of all traveller segments.

Also to note is that this year, the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, more commonly referred to as COP28, will be hosted in our home city of Dubai 28th at the Expo City from November 30th to December 12th - a big one on the city’s events’ calendar since Expo 2020. In a city readying for world and thought leaders converging for this event, we too find ourselves keen to understand how the conversations trickle down to consumers brackets, particularly those invested in travel and tourism. Will we see continued growth in the revival of in-

ternational travel, perhaps a focus on wellness retreats, adventure tourism or MICE travel? Are we moving from buzzwords to clearly defined frameworks that support a better world for all? Needless to say, we will have our ears to the ground, and keep engaging with the hospitality, travel and lifestyle experts to get their take on what’s been hot for travel in 2023!

1. THANDO MAGUMISE. YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL VENTURES IN COUTURE FASHION CONTINUE TO SCALE HEIGHTS IN THE UAE MARKET, ALSO DRESSING CELEBRITY TALENT AND INDIVIDUALS ACROSS AFRICA. TALK TO US ABOUT WHAT INSPIRES YOUR PURSUIT IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?

Ntombi Couture as a brand was inspired by pure African pride. Africa, her people, and the vibrant colours of each country has been at the core of the Ntombi Couture ethos. The opulence of the UAE fashion industry and the diversity has greatly influenced us over the last few years. As a result of the exposure to both cultures, we've been inspired to continuously push the bar to design clothing with and African influence but adopted by all.

2. WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU BELIEVE CREATIVES WORKING ACROSS AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST SHOULD POSSESS IF THEY IN FACT, SEEK TO WITNESS GROWTH ACROSS CULTURAL LINES?

I'd say tenacity and consistency. It's the daily efforts, even the seemingly miniscule, that one puts into running the business and building the brand that contribute to growth over time. One also must have the flexibility in their offering to provide a product that can be adopted across cultural lines. It's not an easy feat however it's very possible.

3. WHAT MAKES NTOMBI COUTURE STAND OUT FROM OTHER AFRICAN FASHION BRANDS IN THE UAE MARKET DO YOU THINK?

Over the years we've taken time to develop an unmistakeable aesthetic. This has become the unique foundation that we've built our brand ethos on. Our approach focuses on taking it a step further with our clients

and focusing our designs on elements they love the most about themselves. We then take that as our lead on what to highlight as we conceptualise.

4. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MOST RECENT PROJECTS THAT YOU'VE REALLY ENJOYED WORKING ON? AND CELEBRITIES YOU'VE LOVED WORKING WITH - EITHER IN THE ENTERTAINMENT AND/OR FASHION INDUSTRY?

We had the honour of dressing Zahira Marty earlier this year in a one-of-a-kind gown for the red carpet during the Oscars. I loved this project because of the unlikely combination of fabrics we put together. We also dressed celebrity stylist Osama Eldeeb for the prestigious Emi Gala. The suit spoke to the clean, structured and highend quality of our aesthetic.

We also had the pleasure of dressing Lasizwe and DJ PH for this year's Durban July themed “Out of This World”. The creative process for both pieces was one for the books for us. Another highlight is that we opened our first South Africa location in Johannesburg in the first week of August this year at the renowned SOKO District in Rosebank Mall.

5. AFRICA FASHION WEEK MIDDLE EAST BURST ONTO THE SCENE IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2023, MAKING A HUGE SPLASH AT DIFC, ONE OF DUBAI'S HIGH-END ART AND DINING DESTINATIONS. TALK TO US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR ROLE AS PART OF THE AFWME FOUNDING TEAM? WHAT INSPIRED THE COMING TOGETHER OF THE FIVE FOUNDERS OF AFWME?

AFWME was inspired by a gap in the market to showcase

not only the unique offering that African designers bring but also the drive to build a platform that will allow them to tell their stories, their own way, through their creations as they break into the Middle Eastern market. Dubai is renowned for favourable returns in business and is also a brilliant launching pad to go global with your brand.

Our team is made up of myself and four dynamic businesswomen, Amna Ahmed, Aser Levron, Dina Yassin and Badrriya Henry. Each partner brings unique skills and expertise to compliment the rest of the team.

As a cofounder of AFWME, March 2023 was indeed a proud moment as it was our first edition. It was a win not only for us as the founders, but for the African community. Partnering with DIFC for this groundbreaking platform has given us the edge to offer a world class event with one of the world's most beautiful skylines as our backdrop. We are also proud to be the first Africa Fashion Week in the metaverse. I've had the pleasure of working closely with fellow African designers in the onboarding process and also during the shows.

Other highlights of the event were Ntombi Couture collaborating with Urban Zulu and Remy Martin to dress Major League DJs and Thuto the Human.

6. WHY IS THE GROWTH OF AFWME QUINTESSENTIAL TO FOSTERING A NARRATIVE AROUND AFRICAN CREATIVES, CULTURE AND ENTERTAINMENT, ESPECIALLY IN A CITY AS DIVERSE AND INNOVATIVE AS DUBAI?

The growth of AFWME is quintessential to fostering our narrative as African creatives because much of what we do is not only us telling our stories, but it's also connected our identities as a people. We would like to pioneer the

true essence of Ubuntu through bringing the community together while playing our part in building a positive narrative for our community.

We are fortunate enough to be in a city as diverse and forward-thinking such as Dubai, and the growth of AFWME fosters the African community collaborating with other communities in the city.

7. WHEN THANDO IS NOT DESIGNING, AT A PHOTOSHOOT OR DRESSING MODELS FOR RUNAWAYS, WHAT DOES SHE ENJOY DOING?

I am definitely a family girl first and nothing means more to me than spending the free time I have with my family and close friends. I have come to the realisation that prioritizing those that matter most in my life is what gives me true fulfilment.

8. EVERY ENTREPRENEUR KNOWS THAT GROWTH AND SUCCESS HINGES ON LOVE AND SUPPORT FROM A VIBRANT NETWORK OF FRIENDS, FAMILY AND ASSOCIATES. NAME FIVE PEOPLE/GROUPS YOU CREDIT YOUR SUCCESS TO?

I am living proof of the famous saying "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu". I firmly believe Ntombi Couture's successes have been as a result of the continuous love and support from a collective of people along the way. My family and close friends have been there from grassroots level long before the brand was known. The clients who come back to us time and time again are the backbone of our business. There have been people and colleagues over the years that have also been instrumental. Some of those in the UAE include the Mzansi Social Club family, the Kiza family, the All-Africa Festival family and a tight network of female entrepreneurs that have become sisters to me and continue to push and encourage me – and for that I am most grateful.

9. BEYOND FASHION, WHAT OTHER VENTURES, BE IT ENTREPRENEURIAL OR PHILANTHROPIC - DO YOU DABBLE IN?

I work with women led rural artisanal communities, mainly in Southern Africa and we supply interior stores. This has been one of the most rewarding ventures I've ever been involved in as it addresses a very important issue for our communities back home - the importance of a woman empowering herself. As time has gone on, we have seen the tangible positive changes our partners have been able to make for their families.

10. ADVICE FOR CREATIVES ON GROWING THEIR BRANDS IN COMPETITIVE SPACES?

Master your offering! Make sure it's unique and be confident in the value of your offering. Many times, as creatives, there is the temptation to underprice ourselves and I've learnt that your true target market will know the value of what you bring to the table and are happy to invest.

Your big why is what will drive you to be consistent especially through times of turbulence. Know your why and keep let that be your key driver. Also, learning never stops.

11. WHAT LEGACY WOULD YOU LIKE TO PASS ON TO YOUR CHILDREN AS THEY WATCH YOU CONTINUE TO BLOOM SEASON AFTER SEASON?

More than anything, I'd like them to understand the magic that lies in pursuing their dreams relentlessly. It is by no means easy, however, there is great reward in chasing your purpose and the things that build others up.

It’s no wonder why the resort is renowned for romantic getaways, but what a pleasant surprise to realise it has since opening, also emerged as an exceptional destination for families seeking adventure, relaxation, and memorable dining experiences.

We spent a few nights here as part of our weeklong experience of the Hilton Hotels and Resorts portfolio in the Maldives, leaving the island with a full-scale appreciation of why winding pathways across the island, family-friendly activities, eclectic dining options and well-appointed beachfront and overwater villas make Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa a perfect paradise for all generations.

Incredible rooms set on land or over the water.

Treated to a seamless check in upon arrival by speedboat transfer and whisked off to our overwater bungalow, we were soon to learn that Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort and Spa offers a variety of accommodations designed to cater to families of all sizes. Each space in our overwater bungalow provided uninterrupted views of the crystal-clear waters that stretched into the horizon, with perfectly designed open spaces that could be closed off from the next by stunning floor to ceiling doors.

Watching the sun rise by dawn from the spacious deck and taking a dip into our private pool by day and night, often without seeing or hearing any of our neighbour-

ing guests, fast became an indication to me that perhaps, one of the key reasons families from the Middle East choose Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort and Spa is the peace and privacy it offers. The private island style seclusion provides a tranquil escape away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the big city. It's a place where families can create cherished memories together in a serene environment, and the beauty of the accommodations make it a heartfelt challenge to actually leave your bungalow or villa to explore more of the island.

We also enjoyed the pleasure of also staying on a beachfront villa, set a few steps away from the island’s main dining and entertainment hub. Our two-bedroom villa was significantly bigger, boasting two huge bedrooms and bathrooms each equipped with an outdoor shower, an extra guest room for guests travelling in bigger groups, a living room with a stellar entertainment station, as well as an outdoor dining space in full view of a sparkling private pool and only a few steps through the surrounding green shrubbery to the soft sandy beach. Each room is meticulously designed for comfort, luxury and privacy as needed, as all can be demarcated seamlessly without impacting the design aesthetic and feel of the space.

Culinary delights for all tastes and preferences

With multiple restaurants and dining options, the resort caters to even the most discerning palates, as guests have the opportunity to savour just about everything from international cuisine, the catch of the day, local Maldivian flavours, or indulge in Arabian-inspired dishes. For families, the variety ensures that even the pickiest eaters will find something to relish, and it comes all inspired by the various cuisines beyond the island itself.

We indulged our first night’s dining

experience from the Beach Shack, which offered a stellar beachfront buffet setting in a hyper relaxed, feet-in-the-sand type of setting, where chefs served up tasty dishes from live cooking stations. From flame-grilled meat dishes to an array of fresh salads, seafood platters and even sushi under the stars, dining here was an absolute treat to set the tone for the food experiences to follow during our stay.

Breakfast was served from the gorgeous, contemporarily designed Habitat, where we enjoyed our daily fills of hot and cold buffet breakfast, which also included opportunities to taste Maldivian dishes packed rich with flavours. Sundowners did not disappoint from a myriad of bars and chic restaurant also dotted across the resort.

Plenty to do about the island.

Traveling with kids, especially the younger ones? The resort understands the importance of keeping the little ones happy and engaged, and has done exceedingly well to provide a range of kid-friendly amenities, from children's menus at the restaurants to a state-of-the-art Kids Club that offers fun, fully immersive activities where children can splash about in a backyard miniature water park,

take on some artistically expressive tasks that involve wall art and drawing, crafts, sand and water play, reading, watching movies and so much more.

And the answer is YES to be babysitting services, as these are available even for the tiny tots. This allows the parents to indulge in relaxation across the island, including a couples massage at the serene Amingiri Spa, a leisurely day lounging by the main pool or your private one, or strolling along the private beaches, knowing that their children are well taken care of in a colourful, child-friendly spacious environment with plenty to get up to.

Teenagers can also enjoy a dedicated space to connect with others of

their age at Re:Fuel – Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa rooftop lounge for teens or try a hand at painting at the island’s Art Studio. It was also common to see families enjoying a bike ride about the island, as each villa comes equipped with a set of bicycles that can be used to explore more the surroundings at leisure.

Aqua fun for all

What’s an island vacation without a little fun on water? The Maldives is renowned for its vibrant underwater world, and Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort and Spa is no exception. Families can explore the colourful coral reefs and encounter tropical marine life through snorkelling or guided diving adventures. The resort also organizes excursions for dolphin watching and fishing, providing memorable experiences for everyone in the family. Taking every opportunity to swim in the ocean from the direct access ladder at the deck of our overwater bungalow was quite the highlight for my adventurous bunch, and while our preference was to simply relax and enjoy our spaces, we discovered that there were a host of water-based adventures families could get up to which included:

• Snorkelling and Marine Discovery: The Maldives is synonymous with mesmerizing marine life, and Hilton Maldives Amingiri makes it accessible for the entire family. Equip yourself with your set of snorkels and dive into the crystal-clear waters right from the resort's beach or your overwater deck at your bungalow if the waves below do not prove daunting. Snorkelling excursions led by expert guides offer a chance to encounter colourful coral reefs and playful fish, an experience cherished by both young and old.

• Dolphin Cruises: A thrilling adventure for the whole family awaits as you embark on dolphin-watching cruises, giving you an opportunity to watch these intelligent and playful creatures which often grace the waters

around the resort. Watching them leap and frolic in their natural habitat is an unforgettable experience, especially for the kids.

Home coming for me is always such a treat even if it’s for a short while, and so when time came for me to make a quick stop into Harare, the city from which I hail; I took to assigning an added layer of purpose for the trip, beyond spending time with my family while connecting with old friends. On a previous trip I had noted the rate at which new construction was taking place, highlighting the increasing investment in new commercial centres and residential units. Because there’s almost always something new to discover with each trip to Zimbabwe, I thought to look up how the boutique hotel scene was evolving, given the inward bound travellers that frequent the capital for business or family visits.

Aquick check in with friends in the hospitality industry brought with it several recommendations for a quaint little boutique guest house called Highlands House. To say our expectations were greatly exceeded would be an understatement. Situated amidst the lush greenery of Harare's prestigious Highlands neighbourhood lies Highlands House, built on sprawling lawns across several acres off Ridgeway North Road in the city’s northern suburbs. In an area replete with a combination of charming mansions hidden behind high walls and contemporary new builds that showcase the best in new age architecture, Highlands House has done well to beckon travellers seeking an extraordinary stay a short enough drive from the hustle and bustle of the Central Business District.

I was to find out at check in, that Highlands House had been established in May 2013, and the property was in fact, once a family home before being converted into the chic space guests enjoy today. Capturing Adventures Through the Lens: The Journey of Michael & Caroline Randall’s Travel Photography

In a world where technology often brings people together virtually, Michael and Caroline's love story began on a dating app that would lead to a whirlwind romance and a shared passion for exploring the world through their lenses.

This dynamic duo, whose names have become synonymous with breathtaking travel photography, has embarked on a remarkable journey that blends their artistic talents, entrepreneurial spirit, and profound love for the wild landscapes of Africa.

Caroline, a former professional dancer turned creative director and marketing expert, was always accustomed to the rhythm of movement. Her early career in entertainment transitioned seamlessly into the founding of her own successful entertainment company.

Meanwhile, Michael, armed with an honours degree in marketing, spent a significant portion of his life navigating the corporate world. His journey took a different turn when his long-standing fascination with photography found fertile ground in the marketing of photographic equipment. However, it was during these moments of alignment that the seeds of a new adventure were planted.

"It was about a year ago that we decided that the corporate world and travelling to the bush every second week weren’t going to work and we decided to take the big step of doing this full time, and so we made the audacious decision to leap into the unknown, fully embracing our passions for photography, digital marketing and adventure,” they said.

“It has been a roller coaster life since then with a lot on our plates but we absolutely have no regrets as we balance managing our agency and travelling the world. We never get tired of the travel and are both impulsive personalities who are always ready to go and always humble and grateful to be able to visit the amazing places we do with our work. Our lives have literally been a whirlwind of balancing our thriving marketing agency with globetrotting escapades, and we are only growing and learning more about ourselves and each other on this journey.”

When asked to unpack three of their favourite destinations or lodges they have enjoyed the privilege of travelling to for photography, Michael chimed in with a “Wow, this is a very difficult question, as each lodge and reserve has something unique and special about it. As a wildlife photographer however, I do have a bias towards leopards and we both can’t get enough of seeing them in the wild. In terms of the best leopard sightings, we really enjoy the Sabi Sands, Mala Mala and Thornybush that offer unbelievable up close relaxed leopard sightings.”

COUPLE GOALS IN THE WILD WORLD OF TRAVEL AND PHOTOGRAPHY

It’s no secret that some couples have openly admitted the difficulty of working together in business. Michael being a wildlife specialist photographer and Caroline on the content promotion and creation side of things, share how in their case, they do in fact complement each other very well when on assignment in the bush. Caroline is extremely organised and manages the sequence of imagery and videos very well. With her interior design background she is also able to dress both herself and Michael, as well and the locations very well.

Mike on the other hand, will play around with different lenses in each scene trying to best capture the essence of the space. From there, he learns a bit more

about content creation and Caroline more about photography and video each day, allowing them to both enhance their combined skills. Both Mike and Caroline are strong personalities though, both determined to be the best at what they do, always pushing harder for the most unique and creative angles of showing off the world.

But while their journeys are awe-inspiring, they are not without their challenges.

"The absence of reliable Wi-Fi in remote destinations poses hurdles for staying connected to our agency and sharing real-time content on social media," they said.

"But these challenges only enhance our appreciation for the quietude of these remote corners of the world, where the call of the wild drowns out the hum of technology."

Their journey is far from over. Michael and Caroline's hearts are set on exploring even more of Africa, including the Okavango Delta in Botswana, with its intricate waterways and diverse wildlife, as well as the otherworldly landscapes of Namibia. As they continue to explore, capture, and share their experiences, their love for each other, their craft, and the beauty of the world around them shines through every photograph.

Celebrating African Heritage through Creativity

More than ever, an increasing spirit of regeneration and renewal is placing Africa’s creativity, talent and style on the world stage. And with a guest experience that is constantly evolving, Singita aims to finetune its existing offering to reflect Africa’s dynamic influence. Most recently, this takes the form of an extensive expansion of their African art and fashion offering at Singita Sabi Sand and Kruger National Park, as well as the design elements at Lamai Triangle’s Mara River Tented Camp.

Found throughout Singita’s lodges and camps, and at each region’s dedicated Boutique & Gallery, pieces by esteemed and emerging artists provide tangible links to, and celebrate the culture of each region and the continent as a whole, allowing guests to be immersed in its inimitable energy.

This has informed our curatorial approach too. “We want to celebrate Africa’s rich cultural heritage, its unique places and people, and the beautiful stories and experiences that have shaped who they are,” says Phumzile Mgiba, Boutique Manager, Singita Sabi Sand.

“As part of this new direction, we want to foster a dialogue by encouraging guests to engage more closely with the works – to learn more about their context, as well as the artists who have made them,” she adds.

Resident artists from Ardmore embody the spirit of ubuntu at Singita BORN OF A SHARED ETHOS

Born of a shared ethos, a crucial aspect of this new direction was to partner with galleries, studios, artists and curators who share the same passion for elevating African excellence and conserving its natural heritage. As a family-founded business rooted in a deep reverence for Africa’s culture, landscapes and people, Ardmore – a thriving artist community based in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands of South Africa and known for its astounding ceramic works - was a natural choice for collaboration.

The first project of this partnership was an artist residency at Singita Sabi Sand in South Africa, whereby two Ardmore artists spent time at the property observing the wildlife and working on pieces inspired by the location. The piece was sold and proceeds went to the Singita Lowveld Trust, to support rhino rescue and rehabilitation,

namely orphan rhino, Mavic. Ardmore artists Victor Mtshali and Wiseman Mpofu – travelled to Singita in 2021, with the experience of seeing wildlife in their habitat giving their work a life-like quality.

“At Singita, we are constantly inspired by the creativity of our continent. Africa is unique and vibrant, and there’s a sense of authenticity at the heart of its many cultures –apparent in every aspect from dance and music to art. It’s meaningful to collaborate in the name of conservation with a brand like Ardmore, and it enables us to create a window through which international guests can experience the raw beauty of the continent through its people and its art," says Jo

Bailes, Singita's Chief Operating Officer.

The Ardmore team hope that beyond the auction’s ability to spread awareness about the causes Singita and its non-profit partners support, the pieces will highlight Africa’s immense artistic talent.

A creative collaboration: Handcrafted African textiles at Singita Mara River Tented Camp

The design team have also always been heavily influenced by the creativity and beauty of the African continent. Singita Mara River Tented Camp’s recent

redesign signalled a bold new era for this unique tented camp in the Lamai triangle, Tanzania.

A major focus for this new concept was on celebrating Mara’s context and location – both natural and cultural and to emphasise its sense of place. And so to bring this vision to life, the Singita design team enlisted African studios to create custom pieces.

One of the studios involved in this project was Coral Stephens Handweaving. Formed by Coral Stephens in the late 1940s in Swaziland, the studio still uses traditional techniques, and its fabrics are made by hand, the goal being to create special, durable, high-quality fabrics and carpets that will last and be loved for many decades.

The studio has been working with Singita for many years. ‘Singita has such a unique approach to lodge design – there's always a consideration of context. They realise that authenticity and naturalness

are needed to truly “blend” into the bush. Their interiors are subtle and truly value local materials and craftspeople,’ says Murrae Stephens, owner/manager at Coral Stephens Handweaving.

Singita designers shared a vision with Cora yet allowed free reign. They were given a colour palette but plenty of freedom to have fun and experiment for scatter cushions, throws and carpets.

The pieces themselves tell a story too – of quality, the depth of design to be found throughout Africa, and the level of skill available locally and regionally. Singita Mara River Tented Camp is filled with custom-made pieces made locally, or in Africa. The design concept leans on local culture and is a characterful and contemporary take on Maasai geometrics, with spectacular, vibrant primary-coloured pieces from Arusha based Sidai Designs for example, displayed at Mara River Tented Camp’s main camp, and provid-

ing a stellar exhibition of creative collaboration in play at Singita.

Thebe HeritageMagugu’s Series at Singita Sabi Sand and Kruger Lodges

Most recently, Singita has collaborated with South African fashion designer, Thebe Magugu, to stock his limited “Heritage Series” at Singita lodges in Sabi Sand and Kruger.

Singita has a long legacy of celebrating contemporary design in Africa and draws on the continent’s myriad cultures in many aspects of the guest experience. The new partnership with Thebe speaks to the brand’s 100-year purpose of preserving the continent’s cultural and natural heritage for future generations. This is expressed in the Thebe Magugu Heritage Series – a collaboration with Singita that celebrates the

continent’s culture through fashion.

The ‘Heritage Series’ is a collection of nine dresses depicting a mother and child from nine African cultures.

Magugu collaborated with a talented illustrator, Phathu Nembilwi to capture the essence of each tribe’s traditional customs and the universal joy of maternal love. Each dress in this collection represents South Africa, Lesotho, Malawi and Swaziland’s nine prominent tribes: VaTsonga, Ndebele, VhaVenda, Zulu, Basotho, BaPedi, Xhosa, Tswana and Swati.

Thebe said, “Seeing the women in my family have to carry children on their back and supplies on their head always reminded me of Afro totem poles; a showcase of utter physical and symbolic strength, and I wanted to pay homage to this memory.”

Collaboration for wellness and sensory immersion

The Singita team also takes the lead from Africa’s traditional wisdom in its wholeness treatments and massages, incorporating local customs and ingredients (such as sadza in Zimbabwe); in wholesome regional dishes proudly displayed with names like Umngqusho (samp and beans), Beghrir (Semolina Honeycomb pancakes), Igwinya (vetkoek), Mtori Soup (green banana soup). At the exclusive-use villa, Castleton, for example, chefs make Marula jam and at Singita Pamushana, in Zimbabwe, they serve Baobab smoothies.

The celebration of Africa’s pulse doesn’t stop there. Singita has curated a “Made in Africa’’ playlist on Spotify, which guests can listen to over and over, to relive the vivid memories of a time on safari, where hours were spent talking about the sunset, or a bird call or identifying an animal track in the sand.

Rwanda’s Tourism, Culture and Governance and more: Why you should visit more than once

It took us 10 days to visit a variety of choice locations, and the only reason why we didn’t feel the impact of the hectic schedule was simply because of how amazing each and every one of the experiences were. And so it is within good reason that I have to share with you ten key reasons why Rwanda has to be on your list of places to see more than once.

1. Boasts some of the safest cities in the world.

The internet is riddled with stories and statistics about why Rwanda is the safest country in Africa and possibly the sixth safest in the world. Depending on who you listen to, it tops many of the truly developed countries in the world for safety, even for solo travellers. But we don’t need anyone to tell us what we feel every time we visit Rwanda. Not sure how else to put it, but if you could look up “safe country” inside a dictionary you would see a picture of Rwanda. And it’s not just in Kigali, the capital. The custom permeates to all the nooks and crannies of the country. It’s like a product they market. And it’s clearly guarded jealously. That’s why it’s a magnet for meetings, conferences, events and of course, leisure focused tourism.

2. If “cleanliness” was a place, Rwanda would be one.

Before venturing outside Kigali, one would be tempted to marvel at the cleanliness of the place. Year after year as winner of the cleanest city in Africa, we didn’t realize that the award was hiding the real secret. The whole of Rwanda is clean!! The government has implemented several initiatives to promote cleanliness and hygiene in the country, including a ban on plastic bags, a monthly community cleaning program and a focus on waste management and environmental sustainability with a budget to match.

A strong push towards decentralized development benefits

all Rwanda has embraced decentralized development as a crucial component of its governance and development strategy. This type of development approach that has proven to be a success in the country shifts power, decision-making authority, and resources away from centralized institutions or authorities and towards the local and regional levels.

It is distributed across multiple levels of governance, allowing local governments, community-based organizations, and grassroots initiatives to have a more active role in shaping and implementing development policies and programs.

This approach also recognizes the unique needs, priorities, and context of different regions or communities within the country. It further empowers local communities, enhances their participation, and enables them to have greater control over their own development

processes. Some examples of how decentralized development has helped Rwanda include:

• Rwanda has established administrative units called "Umudugudu" and elected local councils to ensure grassroots involvement in governance. This has allowed communities to have a voice in shaping development policies and projects that directly impact their lives.

• Local governments have greater authority and responsibility for sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and agriculture. This has led to increased efficiency in delivering basic services, building schools, health centers, roads, and water supply systems tailored to local needs.

• The country has implemented programs such as the District Development Plans (DDPs) that enable local governments to formulate and implement development strategies specific to their areas. This has fostered entrepreneurship, investment, and job creation at the local level, boosting economic growth and reducing regional disparities.

• Rwanda has embraced participatory budgeting, allowing local communities to be involved in decision-making regarding resource allocation. Through platforms like Community-Based Socio-Economic Development (CB-SED) and Performance-Based Grants (PBG), citizens can directly influence how funds are allocated and prioritize development projects according to their needs and priorities.

• Decentralized development has played a role in fostering social cohesion and recon-

ciliation in post-genocide Rwanda. Local governance structures provide spaces for dialogue, mediation, and community engagement, promoting understanding, healing, and building trust among different groups. It has contributed to the national agenda of unity and reconciliation.

All these combined provide visitors with a true sense that they are not missing out on being outside Kigali.

4. Preservation of Culture and Traditions

Rwandan culture is rich, vibrant, and deeply rooted in the country's history. You cannot understand Rwanda without taking a step back in time.

Fortunately, Rwandans are all too eager to share, even their traumas. Some notable aspects of Rwandan culture and traditions include:

• Ubwenge (Wisdom): Rwandans value wisdom, knowledge, and learning. Elders play a significant role in society, as they are respected for their wisdom and experience. Traditional proverbs and storytelling are important means of passing down knowledge and moral values from one generation to another.

• Greetings and Respect: Greetings are an essential part of Rwandan culture. It is customary to greet others with a handshake and a warm smile. Respect for elders, authority figures, and

guests is highly valued. Rwandans often use honorifics when addressing older individuals as a sign of respect.

• Intore Dance: Intore is a traditional dance form that showcases Rwandan cultural heritage. It combines graceful movements, energetic music, and vibrant costumes. Intore dancers perform during ceremonies, celebrations, and cultural events, representing bravery, heroism, and national pride.

• Imigongo Art: Imigongo is a unique traditional art form in Rwanda. It involves creating decorative patterns using cow dung mixed with natural pigments. Imigongo art is commonly seen in wall paintings, pottery, and crafts. It holds cultural and

spiritual significance, reflecting Rwandan aesthetics and creativity.

• Inyambo Cattle: Inyambo cattle are a special breed of longhorned cows considered sacred in Rwandan culture. They are often seen as a symbol of wealth, power, and prestige. Inyambo cows are showcased during important ceremonies and events, such as royal rituals and cultural festivals.

• Igitaramo: Igitaramo refers to traditional gatherings where people come together to celebrate, sing, dance, and share stories. These lively events promote community bonding, cultural preservation, and the passing down of traditions from one generation to the next. Music

and drumming play a central role in Igitaramo celebrations.

• Traditional Attire: Rwandan traditional attire varies among different ethnic groups. The women often wear colorful dresses called "umushanana" or "kitenge," while men may wear a "kanzu" (long robe) paired with trousers. Traditional attire is still proudly worn during cultural events, weddings, and other special occasions.

• Imihigo: Imihigo is a traditional practice of goal setting and performance evaluation. It involves individuals or communities setting targets and working towards achieving them, often in areas such as agriculture, education, or community development. Imihigo fosters accountability, excellence, and collective progress.

• Ubwiru (Hospitality): Rwandans are known for their warm hospitality. Guests are treated with utmost respect and welcomed into homes with open arms. Sharing food, stories, and traditional drinks like banana beer (urwagwa) is common during social gatherings.

• Traditional Arts and Crafts: Rwandans are skilled artisans known for their craftsmanship. Basket weaving is a prominent traditional craft, with women using natural fibers to create intricate designs. Artwork, pottery, and wood carvings also reflect Rwandan cultural motifs and themes.

• Naming Ceremony: Naming ceremonies hold significance in Rwandan culture. Newborns are given names that often reflect their family history, aspirations, or events surrounding their birth. These ceremonies are important cultural and social gatherings where family and friends come together to celebrate the new addition to the family.

• Ibyiwacu Cultural Village: The Ibyiwacu Cultural Village in

Rwanda offers visitors an opportunity to learn about traditional Rwandan culture. It showcases traditional practices, dances, and rituals, allowing visitors to engage with local communities and gain a deeper understanding of Rwandan heritage.

5. Strong Institutions: The key to fruitful governance

Rwanda is often recognized as a country with strong institutions, as it has made significant strides in various key areas. Examples of how Rwanda has built and strengthened its institutions include:

• Rule of Law and Judicial System: Rwanda has a reformed judiciary that ensures the arm of government is independent and efficient. The country has implemented measures to enhance access to justice, such as community based Gacaca courts for post-genocide reconciliation and traditional dispute resolution mechanisms. The establishment of the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) also helps promote good governance practices and adherence to the rule of law.

• Governance and Accountability: Rwanda has taken robust steps to combat corruption and promote accountability. It has created institutions like the Office of the Ombudsman and the Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) to ensure transparency, prevent corruption, and improve public service delivery. The National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA) plays a critical role in prosecuting corruption cases, demonstrating the government's commitment to accountability.

10. Of course, the Gorillas and the remarkable trekking experience

The unique opportunity to see gorillas in their natural habitat is unforgettable, some even say life changing.

Encounters with gorillas as they go about their daily lives are carefully managed, with expert trackers and guides leading small groups of tourists up bamboo-covered slopes to spend a precious and awe-inspiring hour just a few feet away from the gentle creatures.

The largest living primate, gorillas are spread across much of the equatorial African rainforest. Broadly speaking, the species are split into lowland gorillas and mountain gorillas.

The volcanic range which spans Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo is home to the endangered mountain gorilla. Tracking gorillas in Rwanda is safe and gorillas are relatively accessible.

At the latest count, there are approximately 1,000 mountain gorillas in the wild, with 604 in the Virunga Massif. The population is slowly increasing, thanks to concerted efforts between the impacted governments, communities and NGOs.

There are twelve gorilla families living in the Volcanoes National Park, which are fully habituated, with a few others habituated solely for scientific research. The groups, or troops, consist of at least one silverback along with several females and youngsters.

The troops are somewhat fluid in composition but tend to stick to a preferred area. They are constantly monitored and protected by park rangers, with each group coming into contact with tourists for a strict maximum of one hour per day.

Eight tracking permits are issued per troop per day, meaning the encounter is as intimate and as unobtrusive as possible. With only 96 permits available each day in Rwanda, it is highly recommended to book in advance, either online or via a reputable tour operator.

Visitors gather at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi at 7am and are allocated a family group on the day according to fitness

levels, as well as being briefed on protocols and rules for visiting the gorillas.

The families are known as Susa, Igisha, Karisimbi, Sabyinyo, Amahoro, Agashya, Kwitonda, Umubano, Hirwa, Bwenge, Ugyenda and Muhoza. We saw the Muhoza.

Hikes up to their various locations can last anything from 30 minutes to four or more hours, reaching an altitude of between 2,500m and 4,000m. Porters are available to carry backpacks and cameras, as well as to offer a helping hand along the route.

Eight tracking permits are issued per troop per day, meaning the encounter is as intimate and as unobtrusive as possible.

For those interested in tracing the

footsteps of Dian Fossey, her tomb is a 30-minute drive from the park headquarters and then two-three hours hike through the forest, to above 3,000m altitude.

Rwanda is bordered by Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. The country has a temperate climate, with two rainy seasons (February to April, November to January). Average temperatures range from 16-22 degree Celsius. The climate is perfect for tourists.

First look at Wilderness Usawa Serengeti

Did you know that Wilderness actually started out in Botswana 40 years ago as a mobile camp operator, so one would argue that it almost feels fitting to have launch their first mobile camp in the Serengeti, as the company readies to celebrate 40 years of impactful conservation tourism.

The Serengeti was chosen for a number of reasons. Not only is it of course an iconic East African safari experience unlike any other, and one of Africa’s seven natural wonders, but this area is home to the continent’s most fascinating wildlife phenomenon, the Great Migration, which sees two million wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and other plains game journey through Serengeti National Park.

Wilderness wanted to make the most of this extraordinary spectacle for our guests by focusing on smaller, more exclusive camps, which are highly flexible, able to move easily and follow the migration more frequently than any other high-end camps, without compromising on comfort or luxury. The Serengeti is the perfect area for this, such that the operator, in an ambitious move, forged ahead with designing this new offering to adapt and follow the herds throughout the year,

wherever they may be. What makes this guest movement possible? Wilderness have access to areas within the park where it is possible to do walking safaris directly from camp, so this undoubtedly makes for a unique offering for guests of Wilderness Usawa Serengeti, combining perfectly with game drives to witness the migration. An important part of the operation is to also work with the authorities and other local partners to help protect this exceptional wildlife destination, ensuring conservation efforts that stand to benefit local communities, the flora and fauna ecosystem as well as the guests fortunate enough to experience time spent in the Serengeti at some point in their life time.

An epic adventure for wildlife enthusiasts

For many wildlife enthusiasts, the Great Migration is a bucket-list experience, and so Wilderness Usawa Serengeti is ideal for guests who are looking to be slightly removed from the higher-density tourism areas

but close to the action, as well as for safari-goers who love to walk. It is well-suited to a variety of travellers, from older couples who have perhaps been on safari before, but who haven’t yet experienced a mobile camp, to younger couples on honeymoon or celebrating other milestones.

Wilderness Usawa Serengeti is also a good choice for families with children from the age of 11 and older, as they will be able to enjoy the guided walking safaris which is a new experience for many. With only 6 tents, the camp is perfectly packaged for privately guided groups who can book the camp for sole use. Apart from the abundance of mammals and predators that can be seen, there are also more than 500 avian species found in the park, making it a birder’s paradise. For anyone interested in stargazing, the night skies are particularly impressive.

Infusing design elements for aes- thetic appeal and sustainability

The vision, and the challenge, was to create a mobile camp that was both easily moveable and completely

luxurious, which involved plenty of planning and clever design solutions. An important part of the concept was to incorporate as many locally sourced, designed and manufactured furniture items as possible, directly from carpenters and artisans in Arusha, thereby having a direct positive impact on the local economy and showcasing the craftsmanship of the suppliers.

At Wilderness Usawa Serengeti, traditional, sustainable materials have been used, with an overall contemporary design concept that is in harmony with the environment and appropriate in the Serengeti setting, reflecting not overly designed but incorporating a lot of local and traditional design inspiration.

Materials used include furniture made from locally sourced Moringa wood which has a warm, caramel colour with a lovely grain. There are patterned sisal rugs, hand-woven blankets and tapestries, made using hand dyed yarns. The design team worked with SANAA in Arusha for the blankets that are used in the guest tents. SANAA is a non-profit organisation that works with disabled artists who create unique products, mainly from recycled waste.

Recycled materials were also used for modular sofa chairs in the main area as well as for the bathroom decking in the guest tents, made from a greenwood product and sourced from a sustainable design company called Dunia. The greenwood lasts forever because it can’t be eaten by termites and other creatures found in the bush, which is also what makes it sustainable. It is also a sturdy material suited to moving and packing up camp.

Traditional Maasai colours were subtly used in the colour palette, bringing in reds and blues, particularly rich blue colours in the tapestries. The colour palette is neutral to echo the environment but with pops of colour and rich textures used throughout.

The mobile nature of the camp influenced the design of the furniture in terms of size and weight, all the tables and chairs have clever ways of folding

up, and the headboard is specifically designed both as a storage unit full of compartments for guests to use, but also as a handy packing tool for when the camp needs to change location. The other side of the headboard has been hand-carved using a design that looks like a collection of Maasai walking sticks.

As the camp set up is completely mobile, no permanent fixtures are left behind when the camp moves, leaving

a light footprint on the Earth. The camps are completely solar powered, with rechargeable lights and charging stations in the rooms, as well as Wi-Fi and hot water.

The tall stretch tents, also manufactured in Arusha, have a 280-degree view, and the roof extensions create wide shaded areas outside the tents, enhancing the feeling of space and privacy and creating the perfect spot for relaxation and reflection.
