Mike Tavares ON CREATING ACCESS TO AFRICA THROUGH TRAVEL

TECH PLATFORM OJIMAH

1. MIKE TAVARES. TAKE US THROUGH YOUR EARLY DAYS, GROWING UP IN GUINEA BISSAU, YOUR FAMILY BACKGROUND, EDUCATION AND SO ON? WHAT WAS IT LIKE AND HOW DO YOU BELIEVE IT SHAPED THE MAN YOU ARE TODAY?

I have always considered myself a positive and proactive person, and the image that people have of me, they say, is of a kind, generous and supportive person, always smiling and putting other’s interests in front of his own. But that smile wasn’t always there. I was once a little boy that found himself in a new European country, starting a boarding school adventure at just 6 years old, far from his beloved family. I cannot forget the issues that I had to face in a boarding school in Portugal, where we happened to be the only black boys speaking a different language. I have learned to rely on myself and be determined and tenacious, to not only find and follow my path but to build it from scratch.

Unfortunately, I left the country at the tender age of six years old, so I don’t have many memories of my childhood in Guinea-Bissau. Just like most Africans at the time, my family comes from humble beginnings. However, by the time I was three, my father started his own business. It paid off so in 1986, at just six years old, I was sent to a boarding school in Portugal. Back in the 90s, I went for holidays to Guinea-Bissau. My father took me to the house where we lived until I was three years old. We had a room in the shared house. My father turned to me and said, “We had no furniture so me and your num used to sleep on the floor while you, your brother and sister were sleeping on a mattress laying on the floor”. This was the moment

I realized how far we had come and how fortunate I was. I will never forget the sacrifices – emotional and financial – that my parents had to make to invest in my future. Thanks to their sacrifice, me and my brother were the first generation of the family with a university degree.

Today, I believe that life gave me, back then, the opportunity to strengthen my personality, although it wasn’t in the smoothest way possible.

2. HOW DID YOUR PARENTS' DECISION TO SEND YOU TO BOARDING SCHOOL IN PORTUGAL SHAPE YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF DIVERSE CULTURES, AND SUBSEQUENT DESIRE TO CONTRIBUTE IN SOME WAY TO ADVANCING A POSITIVE NARRATIVE OF AFRICA THROUGH YOUR WORK?

It was extremely tough to be far from my parents. But it gave me the opportunity to interact with different cultures and even learn a bit more about myself. It made me reflect on what I see as normal or

abnormal and challenge myself to see the world from new perspectives.

During the years I invested working in the industry, learning new skills and progressing in my career, I noticed the gaps and the misrepresentations that exist about Africa. Most crucially, I witnessed the lack of opportunities that my continent suffers from. This condemns it to start from a competitive disadvantage in terms of the international markets, and it often remains there, unseen and unappreciated. In fact, the most important achievement for me is to see my businesses representing that chance to leave behind the negative images and bias usually associated

with our beautiful lands and people. Unfortunately, we cannot dissolve those images completely, but we can overcome them and move forward, focusing only on what can uplift the continent and all the different beauty that it contains. This can only grant us further recognition and inner gratification and will allow new markets to reach our countries in a different way.

3. SHARE WITH US HOW YOU ENTERED THE REALM OF HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT AND WHAT LESSONS YOU DREW FROM YOUR WORKING BETWEEN THE EUROPEAN AND AFRICAN MARKETS DURING YOUR DAYS AS AN EXECUTIVE IN MULTINATIONAL HOSPITALITY.

After graduating, I started my career

in hospitality. I have worked for a travel agency, for the Portuguese tourism board and several branded hotels. I have made my way up to management and then moved to management consulting.

Holding a variety of positions within the industry was my way of observing and learning what the tourism industry is, does and achieves. My overall goal was to better understand the needs of the sector and acquire a broader view on its operations and way of functioning.

My natural skills and predisposition for problem solving were already quite strong and observing my brother working at Deloitte in Lisbon, in consulting, confirmed somehow that my future would look like that: professionally dealing with other companies’

problems and finding solutions for them.

While working as a Corporate Director of Hotel Operations at the HCI in Madrid, I was responsible for the operations of 18 hotels (Europe and Africa). This resulted in several trips to countries like Nigeria, where I realized there was a gap to fill in the African consulting market. After all, African businesses were paying prime fees to European consulting companies. Companies that had the industry expertise but did not have the local market knowledge

To remedy this situation I established Africa United Consulting in 2018, a management consulting company specialising in tourism and hospitality in emerging markets.

4. THEN CAME OJIMAH. CAN YOU TALK TO US ABOUT WHAT INSPIRED ITS FORMATION, WHAT OJIMAH IS AND WHAT CHALLENGES THE PLATFORM SEEKS TO ADDRESS?

As a consultant, I am paid to resolve problems or enhance services. As we begin the rebirth of the tourism age, I saw an unprecedented opportunity to start things afresh and choose a more sustainable path forward. The pandemic provided me with the time and space to develop my own answer to many problems that the tourism industry constantly faces.

Most (if not all) travel platforms are tech companies with general travel industry knowledge. Ojimah is first and foremost a customer-centric product of the tourism industry. A platform built by our industry for our industry aiming to address key issues challenging the tourism development stakeholders: from destinations to travellers, from local suppliers to communities.

In essence, Ojimah is an online travel platform that allows users to research and book travel products in a simple, easily accessible, and sustainable way, while placing tourism spend into the hands of local businesses. Through our global platform, users

save time, energy, and money; small & medium-sized businesses make money; and local economies thrive through sustainable and responsible tourism.

At the other end, through Ojimah’s dashboard each African National Tourism Board can login and monitor tourism behaviours, the international traffic to their destination and more efficiently and effectively support the marketing efforts of their own countries’ sectors.

One of my goals is to place power and control back in the hands of Destinations instead of leaving it into the hands of mainstream online travel agencies that are not familiar with our people and countries.

5. DESCRIBE IN ONE SENTENCE WHO OJIMAH IS BUILT FOR?

Ojimah was built by the tourism industry, for the tourism industry to create a more sustainable alternative for the future.

6 TODAY YOU ARE WELL RECOGNISED AS A THOUGHT LEADER AND COMMENTATOR IN THE REALMS OF TRAVEL, TOURISM AND TECH WITHIN THE LANDSCAPE. SHARE WITH US THREE OF YOUR MOST PIVOTAL MOMENTS WHEN YOU REALISED YOU WERE ONTO SOMETHING INNOVATIVELY SPECIAL WITH OJIMAH.

Today I am on a path of which I am very proud because I know I am building what has always been my dream, even before I could

clearly picture it in my mind. It feels like my whole adult life existed just to reach this moment and embark on this project. The three of my most pivotal moments are:

• A message received on LinkedIn: “Three times a months I travel on business, and this is by far the most complete solution I ever seen. However, I am very skeptical in using my card as I have never heard about Ojimah! To be honest, it’s too good to be truth, is this a scam? What’s the catch?”

• The moment I received a phone call asking for an appointment at the Headquarters of the UN Tourism to present Ojimah to the Secretary General and his team.

• When I presented Ojimah to a room full of Ministers of Tourism of Africa in Arusha, Tanzania.

7.

LET'S CROSSOVER TO YOUR TAKE ON TRAVEL TRENDS IN AFRICA FOR THE CURIOUS TRAVELLER. WHERE DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE OF TRAVEL IN AFRICA LIES? IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT SHOULD HOSPITALITY PLAYERS, TOUR OPERATORS AND TRAVEL ENTREPRENEURS KEEP IN THE FRONT OF MIND AS THEY CREATE PRODUCTS FOR GLOBALLY CONSCIOUS TRAVELLERS?

To me the future of travel in Africa lies on its young and rising middle class, its diaspora, and then on international travellers. These new travellers think and act differently. They are looking for authentic travel experiences that allow them to connect with local people, cultures, and traditions. Hospitality players, tour operators and Destinations

need to facilitate these experiences in sustainable and respectful ways, and at the same time they must invest in technology. They are adventurous mindset gives to industry stakeholders an opportunity to leverage technology to create a truly individualized, and relevant customer experiences catered to their needs.

In addition, industry stakeholders must adjust their strategies to this segment as their behaviors is way different than the previous generations. For example, they like to explore destinations in a spontaneous way with a particular interest in hidden gems. They are inspired by posts, in particular friends and family posts on social media. They completely rely on their devices, phones to capture the moment and inspire friends and family to travel as well.

8. WHAT DO YOU THINK HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM STAKEHOLDERS ON THE CONTINENT OF AFRICA SHOULD BE DOING MORE OF TO HELP FOSTER A MORE POSITIVE, INSIGHTS-DRIVEN NARRATIVE ON AFRICA?

They should have a better understanding of Public Relations and take it more seriously. Unfortunately, Africa is looked at with the wrong glasses on, feeding stereotypes and myths. It will take years or even decades to change people’s perception on the continent. As a consequence, success stories, development projects and growth in African nations are not given as much cover.

Leading by the public sector, tourism & hospitality stakeholders should invest more in Public Relations. Allow me to give an example. I have been in Los Angeles a couple times. Every time I visit the city, I am shocked with the number of homeless people. A scenario that I am yet to see in Africa or Europe. However, unless you visit LA, you will never hear about it. When we think about LA what comes to our mind? Movies, glamour, celebrities etc. That’s what good PR does. Alongside

with a solid digital strategy we need an aggressive PR campaign walking hand in hand.

9. WHAT TECHNOLOGICAL TRENDS DO YOU BELIEVE SHOULD BE ADOPTED TO MAKE THE AFRICA TRAVEL SCENE MORE COMPETITIVE AS COMPARED WITH OTHER MARKETS BEYOND THE CONTINENT'S SHORES?

Technology has opened up many opportunities for African tourism, particularly in the areas of e-commerce and social media. However to reach its full potential, some groundworks still need to be completed.

To fully leverage technology, African tourism stakeholders should focus on three key aspects: Invest in infrastructure: the public and private should invest in infrastructure, particularly in terms of connectivity and electricity, to ensure that technology can be effectively used to promote tourism.

• Provide training and support: businesses and people working in tourism should receive training and support to help them effectively use technology for marketing, customer service, and other purposes.

• Develop a solid digital strategy: tourism businesses and destinations should develop digital strategies that consider the needs and preferences of their target customers.

10. SPEAKING TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOURSELF AS AN ASPIRING CONSULTANT AND TECH ENTREPRENEUR?

Starting a business and building a product are not for the faint of heart. It begins with an idea, followed by hours of research and

reaching out to people that can help. Having a solid concept, well-researched information and a strong network will set your future business up for success. Take your time and challenge your assumptions to be sure that is a rock-solid idea before fully committing to it. While your business idea may have been perfectly sound at the time of conceptualization, by the time you get started, a lot of variables will have changed, so be ready!

11. YOUR TOP 5 DESTINATIONS IN AFRICA AND WHY?

It is challenging for me to pick my top five. The continent is so diverse! Each place offers its own special gems waiting to be discovered by travellers like me seeking unique and authentic experiences, rich cultural heritage, and untouched natural beauty.

12. PARTING WORDS FOR OUR READERS ABOUT YOURSELF AND OJIMAH?

Part of my story – which I have shared with you today – is to be a link in the chain in the process of rebranding Africa, a self-empowering process that I want to start from within by offering a solid platform where Africans can proudly share our true stories with the world.

With hope for a different future, through tourism. This is why Ojimah exists today, to create an alternative for the future. Be part of our journey!

Whispers of the Delta: An unparalleled Wilderness Jao Camp Experience

When the opportunity arises for you to experience Wilderness; you take it expeditiously!

My friend Taku and I had long talked about one day travelling together, whether a part of my many adventures traversing Africa or in celebration of a special occasion. The former took shape in brilliant form, with an invitation for two and my well acknowledging that I could use some much needed “girl time” bonding with one that’s dear to my heart.

The call to experience the great Okavango Delta, a jewel of Botswana which shimmers in the heart of Southern Africa had finally come. And so, you can imagine the elation when Taku was able to carve out time from her incredibly busy schedule navigating the echelons of high-profile corporate corridors somewhere in Zimbabwe’s capital, to join me for what would be a life transforming 7 days through Botswana’s most prolific destination.

We met at the check-in desk at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport for our flight into Maun. Clad in neutral colours, as one would knowing they were headed into safari territory, we bore infectious smiles and carried bags filled with jokes, excitement and carefully paired outfits we felt were well suited to match the mood of what we had watched from the video-itinerary earlier shared by the Wilderness team. A little under two hours later we touched down at Maun International Airport, cleared immigration and were immediately met by our dedicated Wilderness representative. Swiftly thereafter, we were whisked away to yet another check-in desk for the soon-to-depart Wilderness Air charter that would take us into the Okavango. Yes, Taku and I’s adventure had officially moved from our chats and coffee meets over the years to loading up and heading to our first stay on our circuit – the impeccable Wilderness Jao Camp.

A Flight for Goddesses

For the discerning traveller seeking a luxurious escape unlike any other, the Okavango Delta in Botswana beckons, and who better to discover this incredible display of biodiversity than with Wilderness. Our charter took us first above the desert-like grasslands, with shrubs dotting the sandy landscape below. It was only a few minutes later that our pilot heralded our entry into the skies above the Okavango Delta. This UNESCO World Heritage Site he would share, isn't just another safari destination. It is a pristine wilderness teeming with life, woven into a tapestry of permanent waterways, lush floodplains, and shimmering desert sands.

Earning its UNESCO designation in 2014, the Delta is recognized for its unparalleled animal, bird and plant life. This rare "inland delta," never actually reaches the ocean, but instead creates a unique ecosystem where water nourishes the desert sands seasonally, fostering a remarkable diversity

of life of a recorded over 1,000 plant species, and a staggering 482 species of birds.

A vital refuge for a multitude of threatened species, the Okavango Delta is home to hippos, giraffes, a wide variety of antelope, African wild dogs, elephants, buffalos, cheetahs, lions and more; all finding sanctuary within its lush haven. Having carried out our research and upon reading through the Wilderness pamphlet that was availed to us upon boarding our charter, we were well primed and ready to witness the seemingly unending list of magnificent creatures thriving in their natural habitat.

Design that Whispers with the Wild

A short drive from the airstrip with our guide Paul, took us into Jao, where the warm smiles of a young and energetic team welcomed us into camp. My first impression was one of effortless harmony; harmony between the team, the camp and us, the newest arrivals onto the lodge grounds. Jao camp itself is a masterpiece of sustain-

able design. Thatched roofs, echoing the traditional aesthetic, blend seamlessly with canvas, brick, wood and glass walls that disappear into the surrounding landscape. Locally sourced materials and muted tones ensure the camp feels like an organic extension of the Delta, not an intrusion upon it.

We arrived right in time for high

tea. With a selection of cakes, pastries, hearty wraps and fruit platters to choose from, ours was an enthusiastic “Yes!” at the offer of a signature gin cocktail. A quick tour of the main area unveiled the distinctively welcoming library, with a wall that bears photography paying homage to the owning family’s history. Sleek wooden finish-

ings and a winding staircase, lead you to a vast, raised lounge area, where one can simply immerse themselves in the compelling design and nature that surrounds.

Stepping inside our suite, the sense of luxury truly unfolded. Imagine a spacious haven draped in soft linens, where plush couches and a delta facing bed are the suite’s centerpiece. Each corner of the suite, from the abundant seating spaces and vast deck that juts out onto the Delta, beckon you to sink in and lose yourself in a good book, or simply gaze out at the endless panorama. Our private plunge infinity pool was set to offer a refreshing escape after a day on safari, while the expansive decks blurred the lines between our room and the wilderness. Everything about our space was an inviting welcome into the Delta's symphony of sights and sounds outside.

Sustainable Indulgence: Luxury with a Conscience

Sustainability isn't just an afterthought at Jao; it's the very foundation upon which this luxurious experience is built. The camp operates with a minimal environmental footprint. Solar power illuminates the camp, and water conservation practices are meticulously followed. Witnessing this commitment to preserving the pristine wilderness adds another layer of depth to your stay. It's a luxury that feels good for the soul, knowing your indulgence isn't coming at the expense of this extraordinary ecosystem.

Epic Food Safaris at Wilderness Jao

Fine dining in the bush? At Jao, it's an everyday reality. The talented chefs weave magic with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, transforming each meal into a culinary adventure. Each morning began with a tower of fresh fruit, cheeses and cold meat cuts. cereals and yogurt laid before you, all for your enjoyment as you think through what you would like your hot breakfast to deliver. And of course, beyond the cappuccino and fresh juices was the option to add a glass of Bubbly. Always

a “Yes, please!” for Taku and me. After all, we carried great intent to truly bask in sheer indulgence and to savour every moment enriched with only the finest experiences.

Lunch and dinner were bountiful, if in fact there was any place to put it after the snacks from our game drives and boating adventures in the marshes beyond Jao. From succulent grilled meats, paired with a South African wines and cocktails, to a freshly made Tuna steak salad under the shade of foliage lining the dining areas deck, all our meals were at best, leisurely affairs, with an array of options to fuel our day's explorations.

An Unforgettable Safari Par- adise Awaits

The true magic of Jao lies in its setting. The Okavango Delta is a photographer's dream, and for us amateurs behind the lens, a wildlife wonderland where every turn unveiled a new spectacle and granted us ample practice with our cameras. On our first afternoon in camp, we embarked on an exhilarating game drive led by our expert guide Paul. Within a few minutes we spotted a cheetah and her cub traversing the wooden bridge that guests take into and out of the camp. From elephants to buffalos, zebras, hippos and lechwes, there were plenty of animals to see under the fiery setting sun, with Paul sharing a cocktail of jokes, his knowledge and passion for the Delta's inhabitants during our sundowner stop.

After breakfast on our first full morning at Jao, we opted for an activity beyond the traditional game drives; cruising through the waterways and marshes on a highspeed jetboat. Jao offers a diverse range of activities that bring you closer to the heart of the Delta. From gliding silently through the waterways in a mokoro, a To plan your journey to Wilderness Jao, visit https://www.wildernessdestinations.com/ africa/botswana/okavango-delta/jao-camp

traditional dugout canoe, you can soak up the gentle lapping of water against the hull, it being the only sound that breaks the stillness. This unique perspective allows you to observe a plethora of aquatic life, from the majestic hippo basking in the shallows to the shy yet curious flocks of birds flitting between reeds.

Because we were totally in love with the beauty of our suite, we opted to take in the sun dipping below the horizon from our deck, painting the sky in vibrant hues. A different kind of magic unfolds at Jao by night, as guests gather

around the crackling campfire after dinner, sharing stories and exchanging whispers of the day's adventures. The night sky, unmarred by light pollution, is a breathtaking spectacle, with the atmosphere interrupted only by the haunting calls of nocturnal animals, including the grunting and munching of hippos as they emerge from the waters for their night feed.

Reflections from Wilderness Jao

Wilderness Jao isn't just about ticking off safari goals; it's about creating memories that linger long after you depart. It's about the hushed whispers of the wind through the reeds, the

electrifying energy of a lion's roar, and the gentle caress of the Delta breeze on your skin. It's about savouring a gourmet meal under a canopy of stars and the camaraderie forged with the teams and fellow travellers over shared glasses or at random intersections while in camp.

Taku and I met many years ago as struggling creatives with a desire to discover our point of impact within our respective industries. A friendship born from finding commonality to a sisterhood characterised by connecting authentically through work and play, this trip was more than just an opportunity to press the reset button.

With Taku being a jewellery designer that uses upcycled materials for her creations, and me having an innate love for interior design, use of space and the intersection between people and nature through sustainable practices, Jao to us proved to be a place where luxury meets sustainability, where adventure awaits around every corner, where the whispers of the Delta become a symphony for the senses and where our passions for writing and creativity were further reinforced. It's a place that reignites your connection with self and with nature, leaving you with a renewed appreciation for the wild world and how you can live life

Th8 Palm Dubai: A Luxurious Escape on the Palm Jumeirah

Dubai, a city synonymous with extravagance, boasts a plethora of luxurious hotels. Yet, even amidst this glittering landscape, Th8 Palm Dubai Beach Resort, a Vignette Collection hotel, manages to stand out for its contemporary expressions through design, juxtaposed with a playful atmosphere that can well rival that of resorts in Mayorca or Miami.

Never one to shy away from the opportunity to discover more of what’s hot and evolving on Dubai’s hospitality, dining and nightlife scene, it was an emphatic “yes” to an invitation to experience Th8, which lies on the iconic Palm Jumeirah’s West Crescent. My inquiring mind posed a question on the name of the property at check in, to which I learned that Th8 takes inspiration from the eighth phase of the moon, offering a haven of tranquillity where guests can reconnect with themselves in unparalleled style.

An Art Deco Oasis Awaits

Turning this into a weekend staycation with my fellow entrepreneur friend, our goal was to purely to catch up on life and each other through the sort of drama we love – chic settings that activate spirited relaxation over sumptuous bites and bottomless beverages. Stepping into Th8 which was very much akin to entering a vibrant Miami Beach haven. You’ll note at reception that the hotel's design masterfully blends art deco influences with contemporary elegance. Think sleek geometric lines, pops of vibrant colours, eclectic wall art and a pervasive sense of airiness. Floor-to-ceiling windows bathe the interiors in natural light, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf and neighbouring properties on the Palm.

Suites Fit for Royalty

Ours was no exception as luxury knows no bounds at Th8. Each of the 132 suites is a masterpiece in itself, with our two-bedroom suite boasting an oversize balcony with unobstructed views of the sea to one side, and villas belonging to Dubai’s elite on the frond facing side of the hotel. Bespoke furnishings create an atmosphere of sophisticated comfort, with expansive living areas seamlessly flow one room to the next, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. Though skies were menacing at the promise of rain that weekend, ours was to get comfortable while enjoying our suite, which came fully equipped with a luxury kitchen boasting top

of the line appliances, a large dining room and living room. Bedrooms came with plush king-size beds adorned with premium linens, certainly setting you up for a restful sleep and waking up to mesmerizing sunrises over the turquoise waters.

Technology at Your Fingertips

Modernity seamlessly blends with comfort at Th8. Each suite boasts a range of high-tech amenities, ensuring a hassle-free and connected stay. Control the lighting, temperature, and even order room service with just a tap on the in-room tablet. High-speed WiFi keeps you connected, while a large flat-screen TV in the living room and each bedroom provides entertainment options. The luxurious bathrooms, complete with rain showers and designer toiletries offer a spa-like experience, which my guests and I agreed were perfect to start and end each day during our stay refreshed.

A Culinary Adventure Awaits

Th8, as indulgence extends to the culinary realm, with ENVY, Fluid Beach Club, and Mimo Café, all offering a innovative dining options such as sharing platters and dairy-free alternatives. We enjoyed both our dinner and brunch the following Saturday from ENVY, the hotel's signature restaurant. Our taste buds were taken on a gastronomic journey as we savoured an eclectic mix of international dishes alongside locally inspired fare, infused with the vibrant flavors of the Middle East. I was quite pleased by the plentiful options for the vegetarian and pescatarian which suited my friend perfectly. One can count on freshly sourced seafood and succulent grilled meats that will tempt the palate on both the a la carte menu and Saturday brunch, while an extensive beverage list complements every meal.

Dubai's renowned brunch scene reaches new heights at Th8. Every weekend, the hotel comes alive with the Th8 Brunch, a culinary extravaganza not to be missed. Live music sets the mood as guests embark on a delightful journey of flavors. From fresh seafood and sushi to live cooking stations featuring international delicacies, the Th8 Brunch caters to every palate. Don't forget to indulge in the decadent dessert selection, a fitting conclusion to this luxurious weekend ritual.

Unwind by the Infinity Pool

Our plans for lounging at the pool were dampened by a light drizzle on the first day, but the pool and beach views were enough to inspire a second attempt at waterfront relaxation the day after. The centerpiece of the hotel's outdoor space is undoubtedly the red umbrellas that cover the pool beds spread around the awe-inspiring infinity pool. Shimmering waters appear to seamlessly merge with the azure expanse of the Arabian Gulf, creating an illusion of infinity, and a fitting backdrop for those quintessential photo-opps.

Guests staying at the hotel or day visitors enjoying pool days for which Dubai’s skies are well known for, are invited to bask in the warm sun on a luxurious poolside lounger, order up a platter of bites, an ice bucket with your choice of prosecco, or take a refreshing dip while enjoying the breathtaking views. And just steps away from the infinity pool lies Th8's private beach, where you can sink your toes into the soft, white sand and let the gentle waves lap at your feet. The call to take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters or indulge in a variety of water sports offered by the hotel is unending. For those seeking

relaxation, plush cabanas provide a shaded haven to escape the sun and soak up the serenity.

The Th8 Kids' Club offers a vibrant playground for imaginative adventures, with a team of experienced staff keeping them entertained. Babysitting services are also available, allowing parents to enjoy some well-deserved relaxation.

Cape Town, Africa's southernmost eclectic city, has long been globally recognised as the quintessential destination for travellers on a quest for the ultimate in epicurean moments. Here, were history meets modern luxury at every corner, the vibrant coastline boasts a landmark recently reborn. The Winchester Hotel by Newmark, an iconic establishment steeped in history, recently underwent a meticulous refurbishment, unveiling a stunningly refreshed contemporary space that blends seamlessly with its heritage.

It is always a treat to visit the Mother City, even more so when the weather and blue skies are showing off their magnificence. As we drove down Sea Point Promenade towards the hotel, my excitement rose at the thought of how this aesthetic transformation now breathes new life into the hotel, solidifying its position as a premier destination for discerning travellers seeking a luxurious and stylish Cape Town experience.

A Glimpse into the Winchester Hotel's Past

Upon arrival and settling into my charming, well-appointed space boasting ocean views, I took to going on a tour of the hotel first before enjoying a hearty lunch. Through artworks on the walls, furnishings and colour palettes that contrasted the prominent blacks and whites, it almost felt like the building itself was telling its own story at each turn.

I learned much about how the Winchester’s story begins in the roaring 1920s during my tour of the hotel’s spaces. Designed in the elegant Cape Dutch architectural style, this property remains a testament to the era's grandeur. Its bold facade, with its distinctive gables and whitewashed walls, immediately captured the attention of passersby on the Sea Point Promenade. The interior, adorned with classic finishes such as black

and white floor tiling and arches strewn throughout the Bougainvillia-adorned courtyard where visitors and guests gather for dining experiences, offers guests a sophisticated haven overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Throughout the years, the Winchester has played host to countless travellers as its walls whisper tales of bygone eras and the ever-evolving tapestry of Cape Town.

Unveiling Refurbishedthe Winchester

The recent refurbishment marks a new chapter for the Winchester, truly showcasing a modern metamorphosis. While respecting the hotel's rich heritage, the renovation has resulted in a stunningly refreshed contemporary space. I imagined stepping into a haven where classic elegance meets modern sophistication at arrival and was pleased to witness my expectations exceeded. The lobby, once grand yet slightly dated, now exudes a welcoming charm as soft lighting illuminates the space, highlighting carefully curated artwork and plush furniture in a palette of calming colours against wooden and metallic accents with delightful pops of colour.

The guest rooms have undergone a remarkable transformation, replacing more traditional furnishings with stylish, modern sanctuaries designed for ultimate comfort. Modern

amenities also include high-speed Wi-Fi to keep you connected, luxurious en-suite bathrooms with walk-in showers and plush bedding for that indulgent night’s sleep. I woke up to breathtaking ocean views through my windows, with my rising from my bed having been ushered in by the morning calls of seagulls, sounds of cars whizzing past as the city began to come alive from its slumber and my need to begin the day’s activities. The colour scheme in my room, a blend of crisp white linen layered by calming yellow and peach coloured throws and warm creams, created a sense of tranquillity during my stay.

Unveiling the Delights of Shoreditch Restaurant

The Winchester's culinary scene has also been reimagined. Shoreditch Restaurant, the hotel's signature eatery, was my dining spot for dinner and it truly lived up to the hype. With the concept based on preparing most plated items by flame, the talented chefs draw inspiration from fresh, seasonal ingredients to create a menu that showcases South African cuisine with a global twist. From tasting items from a delectable seafood platter, to savouring succulent steaks grilled to perfection for my mains, accompanied by innovative vegetarian dishes, I celebrated each morsel of food placed before me, indulging in its raw flavours set off by having been cooked by fire. Plated creations all came paired with recommendations from an extensive wine list featuring award-winning local vintages.

The restaurant boasts a stylish yet comfortable ambience, with both indoor and outdoor seating options. Sunsets were dreamy here, as I soaked in the refreshing ocean breeze blowing in from across the promenade while watching the sky turn from blue to orange and purple hues. While I opted for breakfast in the courtyard, guests can also enjoy a leisurely breakfast on the terrace overlooking the ocean.

A Sanctuary of Tranquillity: The Win- chester Spa

What’s a taste of Capetonian luxury without a Spa experience. The Spa at the Winchester Hotel spared no spoils for me as I was treated to an afternoon of pure relaxation and rejuvenation during my first afternoon inhouse. Expertly trained therapists offered me

an extensive menu of treatments to choose from, each designed to soothe the mind, body, and soul. And so of course I was up for a revitalizing massage and facial! The highlight for me was the use locally sourced botanical products, which the scents of each product used aiding my quest for luxuriating in the stillness of my treatment room. Guests are guaranteed that the spa's serene atmosphere, with its calming décor and subtle use of natural light, is well designed to create the perfect environment to escape the everyday hustle and bustle or enhance your rest while staying at the hotel.

Beyond the Walls, A World of Exploration Awaits

The Winchester's prime location on the Sea Point Promenade posi-

tions guests at the heart of Cape Town's vibrant energy. A short stroll takes you to the iconic V&A Waterfront, a bustling hub of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. History buffs can delve into the rich past at Robben Island, art enthusiasts will be captivated by the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa and adventurers can take to flight by helicopter to see Cape Town from above. Nature lovers can explore the scenic beauty of Table Mountain National Park, hike Lion's Head for panoramic views, or simply relax on the pristine beaches that fringe the coastline. Whether you seek adventure, cultural immersion, or pure relaxation, Cape Town offers a plethora of opportunities to venture into the city for a high-octane, gastronomical or shopping experience, or further out for a little taste of South Africa’s rich selection of local wines from its vineyards.

The Winchester Hotel by New- mark: A Tale of Enduring Allure

A testament to its ability to evolve while staying true to its roots, The Winchester Hotel by Newmark is a place where history meets modern luxury, where guests can experience the best of Cape Town's vibrant energy while retreating to a haven of tranquillity. Whether you're seeking a romantic getaway, an exploration of Cape Town's cultural treasures, or simply a luxurious escape, the Winchester offers an unparalleled experience. I stepped into a world of refined elegance, savoured exquisite cuisine, indulged in rejuvenating spa treatments, and created lasting memories in one of Cape Town's most iconic landmarks – an experience I will certainly return for with my loved ones!

Long considered the closest neighbour to the Victoria Falls, it was easy to see why guests come from all over the world to spend their time in the region, and at this magnificent hotel. A mere 900 odd steps from the falls, the echo of the water hitting the bottom of the gorge is vivid and quite frankly, alluring.

The main building centres around the award-winning Cassia Restaurant which features outstanding cuisine and a relaxed yet charming space that immediately welcomes all who arrive. The service from the moment we arrived, was homely and well thought out with a separate lounge area allowing for a comfortable check in process.

Making our way to our room, we encountered a well-stocked bar and an inviting pool area that featured a classy seating area that was begging for content.

The room itself, on the first floor, was a happy marriage of African and contemporary design. Spacious with a double volume thatched roof, generous four poster bed, protected from the elements by a massive mosquito net, built in storage area, a hot beverage station with a complementary mini bar, and of course an expansive bathroom, it was the ultimate in African luxury. The generous balcony with incredible views of the Victoria Falls National Park as well as the manicured lawns of the hotel, provided the proverbial cherry on top.

With dinner a highlight of the hotel, we donned our Sunday best as we made our way to Cassia. The wooden pathway, with its near perfect lighting, provided ample opportunity for a sneaky photo shoot. The dinner service, under moonlight, was a treat. With some great South African wines on offer, we settled into the evening, cold beverage in hand. Starters like the Ostrich parfait really surprised with complex flavours and understanding of flavour combinations. The Zambezi bream and the springbok shank gave a hint of familiarity whilst being true to the award-winning nature of the kitchen. Dessert was starred by the caramelized apple tart, which truly was a delight.

The breakfast service was equally worthy of superlatives. Fresh, enticing, and plentiful the fair on offer really ensured we started our day on the front foot. Tucking into the full breakfast and the pancakes with Chantilly cream really cemented the high quality of the food at Ilala Lodge. With the hotel perched in a quiet corner of what is a bustling town centre, you get a distinct feeling of being intertwining with the region. Featuring some boutique stores, some local vendors, and restaurants, one can walk around and really get to feel the energy of this charming corner of Zimbabwe.

Ilala Lodge was, for us, an environment to reconnect and really reflect on each other. With spaces for reading a book or intimate chatter strewn about, it really was the backdrop of an almost spiritually journey. With the falls providing the echo and the wildlife providing the sounds, and the hotel providing the upstanding hospitality, you really can say God bless Africa.

ADVENTURES IN WILD AFRICA

Unforgettable Romance in Qwabi Private Game Reserve:

Why Babohi by Newmark is a Paradise for Couples

I was fortunate to not be on this trip solo, and so truly got to appreciate the appeal of Babohi by Newmark as a prime destination for couples looking to elevate their bond through a unique safari experience. Situated amidst the breathtaking scenery of Qwabi Private Game Reserve in South Africa, Babohi by Newmark isn't just a luxury lodge; it's a sanctuary crafted for an unforgettable romantic escape.

Time stands still at this adults-only haven, which transcends the typical safari experience. Ours was an unparalleled blend of exclusivity, rejuvenating wellness practices, and exquisite attention to detail, all designed to reignite the spark and create lasting memories for couples on an adventure together.

A HAVEN OF TRANQUILLITY: DESIGNED FOR INTIMATE LUXURY

Babohi's very essence whispers intimacy. Stepping away from the traditional lodge layout, it features individual villas, each a private haven for two. Designed with discerning couples in mind, the villas are a masterpiece of modern sophistication seamlessly woven with the beauty of the South African landscape. Earthy tones with touches of royal blue and golds in the furniture, rich wooden finishes, and warm fabrics create a sense of comfort and belonging. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer uninterrupted panoramic views of the savannah right outside your space, as if one could simply stretch their hand to touch it. My early mornings were warm and spent watching the gentle

African sunrise from our king size bed, with a steaming cup of coffee later enjoyed from the private patio overlooking the woodland, and the symphony of chirping birdlife serenading our every moment.

A FEAST FOR THE SENSES: CULINARY DELIGHTS AND REJUVENATING WELLNESS

At Babohi by Newmark, romance extends beyond the breathtaking setting. The lodge's renowned culinary team weaves a tapestry of flavours in each dish, showcasing the best of South African cuisine with a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Exquisitely curated menus present a fusion of tradition and innovation, with every dish a delectable journey for the palate. We loved our intimate candlelit dinners from the main lodge, seemingly hoisted up and floating above the vast valley below. Sunsets were mesmerising from this vantage point, and if it’s a nightcap of Amarula or Bourbon you are looking for post dinner, the bonfire setting down below is perfect to ease you into the remainder of your evening.

Beyond what magic is being delivered from the chef’s kitchen, Babohi also prioritizes your holistic well-being.

“THE INTRODUCTION OF WELLNESS OFFERINGS AT REGULAR TOUCHPOINTS ALONG THE NEWMARK CUSTOMER JOURNEY IS A KEY STRATEGIC FOCUS FOR US,” SAYS NEIL MARKOVITZ, CEO OF NEWMARK HOTELS & RESERVES. “CONSUMERS ARE MORE AWARE OF THE LINKS BETWEEN PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH, AND THIS IS DRIVING THE RISE OF WELLNESS AS A CONSUMER VALUE,” HE ADDS.

Babohi spared no expense with its on-site spa, which offers a haven of relaxation for all who step through its doors. Featuring a variety of treatments designed to soothe the mind, body, and soul, we were encouraged to indulge in rejuvenating massages, aromatherapy treatments, or a revitalizing body wrap, all using natural products inspired by Africa's rich botanical heritage. the throngs of the wild was a hard one to make, as both certainly promised a time to reconnect and unwind, soaking up the wonders of the reserve together. We opted for both, the “African massage” that comes with navigating the vast terrain on the back of a game viewer, followed by pampering at the spa that brought on heightened relaxation after a morning out on a game drive.

EMBRACING THE ALLURE OF NATURE

Qwabi Private Game Reserve boasts an incredible diversity of wildlife, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and adventure-seeking couples. Expertly guided game drives in open-air vehicles take you into the heart of the reserve, where you can witness the majestic grace of lions, the beauty of a dazzle of zebras or the swimming of hippos as they penetrate the surface of watering holes throughout the reserve. A special treat for us was the sighting of the very rare black rhinoceros with her young resting under an acacia tree. Shortly thereafter it was a coffee stop at a viewing deck on the banks of a small stream, where we watched animals emerge from the savannah for their morning fill of water.

Beyond the traditional yet exciting game drive, Babohi by Newmark offers a variety of activities that will further enrich your romantic escape. Because you enjoy the luxury of time with your designated guide and hosting team, you can opt for a luxurious bush breakfast or dinner, where you can learn about the hidden wonders of the reserve and the intricate ecosystem over delicious servings from the kitchen.

Still time further by sitting on your balcony after dinner for a little uninterrupted stargazing session. Nestled away from light and sound pollution, it is breathtakingly quiet out there at the Qwabi Private Game Reserve, award-

ing you an opportunity to potentially enjoy a celestial spectacle. Few things rival such romantic moments as sitting under the African skies and soaking up the stillness of the night with your loved one.

A PLACE WHERE TIME STILLS AND MEMORIES LAST A LIFETIME

Babohi by Newmark transcends the ordinary, offering a sanctuary for couples seeking an unparalleled escape. From the luxurious intimacy of your private villa to the rejuvenating spa treatments, the exquisite culinary

experiences, and the unforgettable wildlife encounters, every element is meticulously crafted to reignite the spark and create lasting memories. It's a place where loss of time bares no consequence, allowing you to reconnect with nature, reconnect with each other, and create a mental album of experiences you'll cherish forever. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply seeking a romantic retreat, Babohi by Newmark promises an unforgettable escape for you and your special person.

Mvuu Lodge: Where Rustic Luxury Meets Untamed Beauty in the Liwonde National Park

You’ll find it amongst the iconic fever trees of the magnificent Shire, amidst the sprawling plains of Liwonde National Park, yet tucked away on Namagogodo lagoon. Operated by Central African Wilderness Safari’s, this isn't your typical safari lodge. Mvuu Lodge offers unparalleled access to wildlife encounters and breathtaking scenery of water and land, doing so with a unique blend of rustic charm and contemporary luxury. This eco-friendly haven is designed for the discerning traveller seeking a rugged yet restful retreat in the warm heart of Malawi.

My stay here, part of a 10-day experience across Malawi was short, but perfect enough for me to start thinking about coming back for a little longer. Beautiful sunrises ushered me into each day we were in camp, and still evenings with banter between guests wrapped us up for the following one. Imagine being awakened by the gentle chirping of exotic birds and the distant rumbling of hippos, which quite active during the night, could be heard munching at the grass that surrounded my luxury suite. On each morning and late afternoon, I stepped out onto my private deck, which boasted a panoramic view of the action-packed lagoon, where elephants, crocodiles and a myriad of birds, casually kept the huge populations of hippopotamus company. What unfolds before you along the shores of the magnificent Shire River – is a vast savanna teeming with life, all while you

luxuriate in the comfort of your spacious tented suite or enjoy refreshing drinks and snacks from the elevated sundeck at the main camp.

Luxurious comfort under canvas

The lodge itself is a testament to inspired design. Gone are the days of roughing it in the bush. Here, luxury suites, a mash-up between brick, mortar and canvas, take center stage. Each of the suites boast an expansive canvas interior, creating a sense of spaciousness that blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings. King-sized beds draped in mosquito netting invite restful slumber, while oversized sunken bathtubs with outdoor showers offer a touch of indulgence under the blue-by-day and starlit-by-night African sky.

But the true highlight is the private deck facing the lagoon for each suite. Imagine soaking in the cool water’s stillness after a thrilling game

drive, the gentle gurgle of the pool from hippos and crocodiles darting up and down the water’s surface, blending with the symphony of the bush. The sight of wildlife ambling past your suite or birdlife swooping in for a fresh catch adds a touch of untamed magic to the experience.

The lodge's communal areas are equally impressive. The main deck, with its inviting fire pit just below, offers comfortable seating and is the perfect spot to unwind after a day of adventure, sharing stories and experiences with fellow travellers during pre or post dinner drinks. Further down from the lodge’s main dining areas, a sparkling pool provides a perfectly pristine picture of relaxation that merges the surrounding waters with the savannah on the horizon.

Wildlife Encounters Beyond Compare

Mvuu Lodge lies within African Parks managed Liwonde National Park, which since 2015, has been the site of some significant wildlife translocations and reintroductions. This landscape is well recognised today for moving the needle with averting some of the highest human-wildlife conflict levels in the region, as African Parks continues to work in partnership with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW).

Our expertly guided game drives took us across various parts of the National Park, where we were fortunate enough to spot a graceful cheetah and her two cubs taking what seemed like a

much-needed siesta after a successful antelope kill. Zebras grazed peacefully as much as we caught a glimpse of waterbuck and other members of the antelope family, getting their fill from a combination of grasslands and marshes nearest to Shire River. On such excursions, it is always a pleasure to participate in the school of the wild, as knowledgeable rangers not only ensured our safety but also brought the African bush to life, sharing fascinating insights into the animal behaviour and the delicate ecosystem we were witnessing.

Beyond the thrill of game drives, Mvuu Lodge offers a variety of unique experiences that cater to the curious explorer, including game viewing from the water, sundowner and night safaris, hide viewing, bush dining, and getting involved with communities in Liwonde, giving guests an opportunity to make a difference through community upliftment initiatives that the Lodge is a part of.

A Disconnect to Reconnect: A Perfect Balance of Adventure and Relaxation

One of the most captivating aspects

of Mvuu Lodge is the sense of disconnection it offers. The lodge allows you to truly escape the constant hum of digital life, only offering internet connectivity from the main lodge’s upper deck. But disconnection doesn't equate to deprivation. The lodge provides all the modern amenities you might need, ensuring a comfortable and hassle-free stay. The attentive staff caters to your every whim, ensuring your needs are met with genuine warmth that’s characteristic of Malawian hospitality.

When within your luxury suite, you’ll find plenty to pique your interest from your space, designed with a focus on the use of natural materials and the calming views overlooking the lagoon, which certainly blur the lines between your room and the wild. Your safety briefing will remind you of the nocturnal animals that have been known to saunter through the camp by night, including cheetahs and lions, and so while in the comfort of your room, one can appreciate the thrill of the wilderness, reconnecting with nature, yourself and with those you share this incredible experience with, also ensuring vigilance by day should you need to take a walk to the main lodge for a snack, a chat or to get back online for a short while.

As each day drew to a close, we gathered around the crackling fire pit, sharing stories and laughter under a canopy of stars, a million glittering points of light illuminating the boundless African night. Mvuu Lodge to me was more than just a luxury safari lodge; it's a philosophy that pays homage to honest, authentic hospitality, and certainly a spirited way of experiencing the raw beauty of Africa from the shores of Malawi’s longest river.

After days of exploring a border town and its surrounds that invites many from far and wide, here are a few reasons why The Victoria Falls Hotel stood out to us for all the details in service rendered, also suggesting why this should be on your list of hotels to choose from for for your dose of luxurious accommodations when in the border town of Victoria Falls:

A TEAM LIKE NO OTHER

• From the moment you arrive, the porters, reception and support staff operate in brilliant unison. Your bags are collected, and as you make your way to the reception, you are blessed with a thirst-quenching homemade lemonade, perfectly combatting the warm temperatures, and further accompanied by a wet cooling towel. The paperwork was only a matter of a signature. The reception team explained the facilities with vigour which naturally piqued our anticipation.

• Nothing was too much for the housekeeping and restaurant staff as any and every request was met with an enthusiastic “Yes!” From understanding their offerings to the most gracious hospitality and attention to detail, they ensured that you that the only finger you had to lift was to bring food to your mouth.

WONDROUS VISTAS

• Stepping out onto the Stanley Terrace, you are met with the most incredible lawns; lush, vibrant, and expertly manicured. The horizon is framed by the famed “smoke that thunders” of the Victoria Falls. The view is breath taking and every time you see it the feeling of venturing beyond the ground to see it up-close becomes one you yearn for. The trees abundantly strewn across the property add much needed shade, but more significantly are rumoured to be hundreds of years old.

• There is nowhere you don’t want to spend time. The courtyard between reception and the main dining space is a calm and peaceful space that prompts you to take a moment and literally smell the flowers. Exploring

further, The Stables wing features a beautiful courtyard centred by an ornate fountain, framed by an orchard of herbs which form part of the many delectable dishes served on the property.

• The Larry Norton Gallery is a sight to behold, and features works form incredible artists from all over the continent.

• The Stone Dynamics Gallery features works in marble and other stone and is a feature near the pool for leisurely viewing. Other works are featured across the hotel grounds and make for an interesting vantage as you make your way across the property, either towards Jungle Junction, the famed spot for breakfast and dinner buffet-style discovery, or during a walk across the property as you appreciate the calming nature of the place.

A WORLD OF GASTRONOMY

Our first taste of the culinary delights the hotel had to offer was a trio of sliders – crocodile, beef, and chicken. An interesting mix that left us excited to explore the various food options the hotel had to offer.

Our first dinner at curiously named Jungle Junction or JJ’s was an interesting experience to say the least. The path leading to the restaurant is dimly lit and as you edge closer you are met by the scent of meat on a grill and the sounds of marimbas. The restaurant, with ample seating and a quintessential bush boma design, is the perfect backdrop for food exploration.

The starter station included delicious sushi varietals with accompaniments as expected. The salads included a mix of classic and adventurous options which really suited us.

Focaccia, which was the star of the bread section, was served with several butters which took it to the

next level.

The star of the dinner was the main section. The grill section was a meat fest in the form of a sirloin roast, wildebeest cutlets and grilled crocodile. The meat was succulent and moreish but there was more to taste.

The traditional fare was led by sadza, a traditional Zimbabwean maize meal dish, with a delectable fall off the bone braised oxtail stew and muriwo unedovi, greens in peanut butter. The depth of flavour and the meatiness of the dish reminded me of home. Other options included a chicken and vegetable curry that similarly went down a treat with the crispiest papadums.

The crowning glory if you will, was the extensive dessert section filled with the tastiest goodies like the whole vanilla cake and several pastries including an incredible pecan nut Danish.

I will also say the masked Makishi were really a pleasure and something that really entrenched the dinner as one that is truly African Stanley’s Terrace for dinner was also

a delight. With an extensive wine list, an array of cocktails, local beers, and spirits in addition to the more familiar names, there is plenty to drink whilst watching the night set upon the hotel.

The burger with all the trimmings was juicy and filling and the grilled seabass perfectly cooked and brilliantly presented

The final piece of the puzzle was the breakfast buffet back at JJ’s. A cold section of fresh cut fruit, a variety of cereals and yoghurts started the mornings off properly. The sparkling wine amongst the fresh juices made for a pleasant surprise. Very few things beat a mimosa at breakfast.

The hot selection included the usual English breakfast standards like scrambled eggs, baked beans and sausages which made for a taste of home.

PALATIAL ACCOMMODATIONS

The Stables Signature Wing Rooms feature comforting lodgings, fitted with a large couch and an inviting 4 poster bed. The bed is soft, with high quality bedding and has so much space one might have to go searching for a loved one in the middle

THE WANDERLUST WITHIN

Zimbabwe: Beyond the Stripes, a Symphony of Smiles

CONFESSION TIME: ZIMBABWE WASN'T ON MY BUCKET LIST.

Fuelled by a steady stream of headlines, I held a vague picture of a troubled nation. But as a solo female traveller and the founder of a travel company catering to women like me, safety is paramount. Curiosity nudged me to dig deeper, and what I discovered was a symphony waiting to be played, a melody of warmth, resilience, and vibrant life. In October 2023, I took a leap of faith, boarding a bus from Botswana, heart brimming with a nervous excitement.

Beyond the Surface Noise:

The border crossing was smooth, a friendly exchange of documents and a warm "Welcome to Zimbabwe."

This genuine greeting set the tone for the entire journey. My itinerary wasn't meticulously planned, a conscious decision to embrace the unexpected. Bulawayo, my first stop, became a haven. The streets pulsed with a familiar energy, a throwback to my childhood in Botswana. Brands from my youth lined the shelves of supermarkets, sparking a wave of nostalgia that washed over me. This shared history, this subtle connection, filled me with a sense of belonging.

Safety? More Like Serenity.

Safety, of course, remained a top concern. As a solo traveller, navigating unfamiliar streets can be daunting. Yet, Bulawayo embraced me. Locals, ever helpful, offered directions with a smile. One evening, my quest for a post-sunset manicure led me to a salon closing just as I arrived. Hesitantly, I inquired about the walk back to my hotel. Everyone assured me it was safe, and their genuine concern resonated more than any travel advisory. And you know what? They were right. The walk was peaceful, the night air filled with the melodic hum of crickets, not sirens.

A Feast for the Senses

Zimbabwe's self-sufficiency surprised me in the most delightful way. Every corner overflowed with fresh, local produce - a rainbow of fruits and

vegetables at ridiculously affordable prices. Each bite was an explosion of flavour, a testament to the hard work and resilience of the Zimbabwean people.

Crafting My Own Melody

This wasn't a packaged tour. I craved an experience true to me, a melody composed by my own curiosity. I wandered through bustling markets, haggling for trinkets with a wink and a smile. I spent evenings at local restaurants, savouring traditional dishes and soaking in the warm chatter. Each interaction shattered pre-conceived notions, revealing a nation pulsating with life.

Yearning for Connection? Zimba- bwe Delivers!

What do I yearn for most when I travel? Connection. Authentic, heartfelt connection. And Zimbabwe delivered in spades. Conversations flowed effortlessly - with taxi drivers, shopkeepers, fellow travellers. Their stories, shared with open hearts, revealed a nation overcoming challenges, a people striving for a brighter future. Their resilience resonated deeply, and a sense of shared humanity bloomed.

A Message to My Neighbour:

Zimbabwe, my neighbour, I stand here humbled. You've shown me the power of human connection, the beauty of resilience. The headlines may paint a different picture, but the reality is a vibrant tapestry woven with hope, determination, and a genuine warmth that seeps into your soul. You are a gem waiting to be discovered, and I, for one, am hooked.

To the Adventurous Soul:

This is a call to all the adventurous souls out there. Don't let pre-conceived notions hold you back. Dive deeper, explore beyond the surface noise. Zimbabwe's story goes far beyond the safari stripes. It's a symphony waiting to be heard, a melody composed of vibrant cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and the most welcoming people you'll ever meet. Take that leap of faith, embark

on your own Zimbabwean adventure, and discover the beauty that awaits.

IN ZIMBABWE, YOU CAN:

• Hike through the majestic Matobo Hills, their granite boulders whispering ancient secrets.

• Hike up the Mt Nyanga, the highest peak in Zimbabwe, a 1-3hr hike

• Explore the vibrant city of Harare, a pulsating hub of culture and history.

• Learn the art of basket weaving from local artisans, their nimble hands creating masterpieces from sustainable materials.

• Immerse your heart and soul in the locals, interact with them and hear their stories and connect on a human level.

These are just a few threads

woven into the rich tapestry of Zimbabwe. This is a country that beckons you to explore beyond the headlines, to connect with its people, and to discover the beauty that lies within.

The safari stripes may be iconic, a symbol of untamed wilderness, but Zimbabwe's true beauty lies beyond the safari. It resides in the warmth of its people, the resilience of its spirit, and the stories waiting to be discovered. Are you ready to embark on your own Zimbabwean adventure, to rewrite the narrative and discover the unexpected beauty that awaits?

Planning your next international trip for the summer?

Check out VFS Global’s 6 simple steps to get your visa on time!

There's nothing quite as exhilarating as embarking on an international journey, immersing yourself in diverse cultures, and creating lasting memories. Yet, amidst the excitement of planning and packing, securing your visa often goes unnoticed. Whether your travels are for leisure, business, or education, obtaining the necessary visa is the crucial first step to realizing your travel aspirations.

Visas come in various forms, tailoured to your travel purpose, whether it's for tourism, business endeavours, or educational pursuits. Here are a few steps to ensure that you apply for your visa accurately to receive it on time.

1. Destination Identification

The foundation of any successful visa application journey begins with a clear destination in mind. Whether you're dreaming of exploring the streets of Europe, embarking on a business venture in Africa or Asia, or pursuing academic opportunities in Canada or the United Kingdom or Australia, identifying your intended travel destination is the crucial first step. Understanding your desired destination is not only crucial for selecting the appropriate visa type but also sets the tone for your entire travel experience.

2. Check Visa Processing Timelines

Once you've identified your destination, it's imperative to familiarize yourself with the visa processing timelines specific to that location. Timelines for visa processing are clearly outlined on the relevant Embassy/Consulate’s official websites. Visa processing timelines can vary significant-

ly depending on factors such as the country you're applying to, the type of visa you require, and the time of year. For instance, popular tourist destinations may experience longer processing times during peak travel seasons, while certain visa categories, such as work visas, may have different processing timelines. By researching and understanding these timelines in advance, you can effectively plan your application submission to ensure timely processing and avoid any unnecessary delays.

3. Book Visa Appointment Early

Booking an appointment to submit your visa application well in advance is essential in navigating the visa application process smoothly and getting your visa on time. Appointments can be booked on www.vfsglobal.com absolutely free of charge! However, some governments require pre-payment of the service fee at the time of booking the appointment. This payment will be reimbursed or deducted during the application process. Additionally, for more convenience, applicants can opt for optional services such as ‘Visa At Your Doorstep’ and submit their applications from the location of their choice, and Premium Lounge to get end-to-end assistance with their application submission from the comfort of a plush lounge. By applying early, travellers can avoid last-minute stress, with most countries accepting visa applications up to 90 days (3 months)

before their date of travel. Schengen visa applicants can apply for their visa up to 180 days (6 months) before their date of travel.

4. Review Documentation and Requirements

Attention to detail is paramount when preparing your visa application materials. Carefully review the documentation and requirements outlined by the embassy or consulate of the country you intend to visit. Commonly required documents may include a valid passport, proof of financial means, travel itinerary, and completed visa application forms. Ensure that you gather all necessary documents and meticulously adhere to each requirement with precision. By double-checking your documentation and ensuring compliance with the specified guidelines, you can significantly increase the likelihood of a successful application outcome.

5. Access Comprehensive Visa Information

To ensure that you're thoroughly informed and adequately prepared for the visa application process, leverage resources such as the official website of VFS Global, www.vfsglobal.com.

VFS Global’s official website provides a convenient and user-friendly interface where applicants can input their source and destination countries and access comprehensive information on visa application procedures, appointment scheduling options, and centre locations. You can also access detailed guidance on various visa types, associated fees, and frequently asked questions. For example, if you're applying for a Schengen visa to explore the enchanting landscapes of Europe, the VFS Global website provides extensive resources and support to help you navigate the application process with confidence.

6. #DoNotFallForFraud

Visa applicants are advised to beware of fraudulent entities who charge money from applicants for schedul-

ing appointments or providing any other services using VFS Global’s name or independently. VFS Global does not charge any fee for booking appointments on www.vfsglobal.com which is the official website catering to visa applications. However, some governments require pre-payment of the service fee at the time of booking the appointment. This payment will be reimbursed or deducted during the application process. This step is only to ensure genuine travellers use appointment booking and the system is kept safe from misuse by fraudulent entities.

Furthermore, it's essential to plan ahead, ensuring passport validity and budgeting for expenses. Consider expedited processing options if needed

and stay updated on visa requirements. Make sure to provide accurate information on the application form and submit required documents promptly. Note that optional services like Visa At Your Doorstep or Premium Lounge do not expedite processing.

Obtaining your visa is the critical first step in planning your international adventure this summer. By understanding visa types, preparing necessary documents, following the application process diligently, and planning ahead, you can embark on your journey with confidence. Each meticulous detail attended to ensure a sense of assurance, eagerly anticipating the adventures and memories awaiting in distant lands.

Fear not fellow luxury traveller, for Maputo offers a delightful blend of work and play, ensuring your stay is anything but a monotonous grind.

Luxury Defined: Convenience and Oceanfront Bliss

My home for this adventure was the Radisson Blu Hotel & Residence, Maputo. Perfectly situated, it offered the ultimate convenience – close to my business meetings, a stone's throw from the beach, and surrounded by a delectable array of restaurants. The plush lounges were ideal for catching up on reports and virtual meetings, while my spacious room provided a haven of tranquillity. I’ll be honest though - a peek into my colleague's ocean view suite left me yearning for some beachfront bliss – a trip for next time!

A Culinary Symphony: From Seafood Sensations to Happiness on a Plate

Maputo's culinary scene is a symphony for the senses, and my first stop was Sagres, a haven for seafood lovers. Here, the art of balancing flavours reached new heights. Steamed vegetables, often relegated to bland sidekicks, were transformed by a magical lemon and garlic sauce, bursting with life in every bite. But the show's star was undoubtedly the prawn – the most succulent and flavourful I've ever encountered. The ambience was a feast for the eyes, the perfect complement to an unforgettable meal.

For a dazzling atmosphere, South Beach is your go-to place. Imagine a scene straight out of a movie: whitewashed décor blending seamlessly with the pristine sand and turquoise ocean. This picture-perfect haven was ideal for unwinding after a long day of strategising. As I sipped my drink, the gentle caress of the ocean breeze and the rhythmic sound of the waves painted a picture of pure luxury.

Unwinding in Style: Cocktails, Music, and Local Flavours

No business trip is complete without some post-work indulgence, and Jimmy's Bar and Grill answers your cocktail prayers. From the moment you step in, the sheer sophistication of the place takes your breath away. The handcrafted cocktails are a visual and gustatory masterpiece, and the service is impeccable. The resident DJ on the night I visited spun some old-school classics, and I found myself swaying to the rhythm, my worries dissolving with each sip.

For a taste of local culture, Xima was the perfect finale to my Maputo adventure. Though small, the bar overflows with vibrant personalities and infectious energy. A live band belted out covers, even treating me to a song from my homeland, making the experience all the more special. The audience was invited to join the fun, and the energy was electric as traditional songs filled the air and patrons took to the dance floor.

Ponta do Ouro: Paradise Found

If you have a spare day, Ponta do Ouro is a must-visit. This slice of paradise boasts a beach of unparalleled beauty, with crystal-clear turquoise waters lapping at the shore.

It's the perfect escape to melt away your worries and simply be. The name "Ponta," as I fondly nicknamed it, truly lives up to its promise. Fresh, delicious food and the locals' warm hospitality add to this idyllic getaway's charm.

So, the next time you find yourself in Maputo for work, remember a little luxury and a dash of local flavour can transform your trip into an unforgettable adventure.

Stone Town Zanzibar:

A Labyrinth of History, Culture, and Transformation

Stone Town, also known as Mji Mkongwe (Swahili for 'old town') is considered by many a tourist to be the heart of Zanzibar City, pulsates with a captivating history, and a vibrant tapestry woven with diverse influences. Its labyrinthine streets, lined with coral-stone buildings, whisper tales of ancient trade routes, colonial rule, and a rich cultural fusion. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site stands as a testament to the past, while embracing the present as a vibrant tourist hub.

A Journey Through Time

While the exact timeframe of Stone Town's origins is debated, evidence suggests its existence predates the 14th century. Historians believe early inhabitants were the Swahili people, a Bantu-speaking community known for their maritime expertise and trade networks. The arrival of the Portuguese in the late 15th century marked a turning point.

They established a fort, initiating a period of Portuguese rule that lasted nearly two centuries. However, recent archaeological discoveries suggest Swahili presence might have been more significant than previously recognized, challenging traditional narratives. The 17th century witnessed the rise of the Omani Sultanate, whose influence left an indelible mark on Stone Town. The Omani rulers transformed the settlement into a flourishing trade

center, attracting merchants from across the Indian Ocean. This era saw the construction of magnificent palaces, elaborate houses adorned with intricately carved wooden balconies ("verandas"), and the iconic Old Fort, a testament to the town's strategic significance.

However, this period also saw a dark chapter unfold. Zanzibar became a major player in the East African slave trade, leaving a poignant and undeni-

able stain on its history. The House of Wonders, a landmark palace once used as the Sultan's official residence, also housed a slave market, a stark reminder of this painful past.

The 19th century brought further change. British influence grew, culminating in Zanzibar becoming a British protectorate in 1896. This period saw the construction of iconic landmarks like the Anglican Cathedral and the High Court, reflecting the architectural influence of the colonizer.

Following Zanzibar's independence in 1963 and its subsequent union with Tanganyika to form Tanzania in 1964, Stone Town remained the cultural and administrative center of the Zanzibar archipelago.

Zanzibar Today: A Treasure Trove of Experiences:

Wandering through Stone Town's narrow streets is itself an experience, akin to stepping into a living museum. The coral-stone buildings, once adorned with intricate carvings, stand as silent sentinels, whispering stories of bygone eras. The ornately decorated wooden

doors reveal glimpses into the lives of the inhabitants.

The bustling Darajani Market, a feast for the senses, offers a glimpse into local life. Spices, fresh produce, and exotic wares fill the air with an intoxicating aroma, while vendors' rhythmic calls create a dynamic soundscape.

History buffs can delve into the captivating past at the National Museum of Zanzibar, housed in the Sultan's Palace. The intricate carvings and opulent interiors of the Palace Museum offer a window into the lives of the Omani Sultans.

No visit to Stone Town is complete without experiencing the vibrant sunset over the Indian Ocean. Dhows, traditional sailing boats, bob gently on the waves, creating a picture-perfect postcard moment.

The Duality of Tourism

Tourism has become a vital part of Stone Town's economy, breathing new life into the historic district. Restoration projects have brought many historic buildings back to their former glory, creating boutique hotels, art galleries, and cultural centers.

However, the influx of tourists also presents challenges. Concerns about gentrification and the commodification of cultural heritage are increasingly voiced. Rising living costs threaten to displace residents, and the delicate balance between preserving history and catering to tourism needs constant attention.

Looking Forward

Stone Town stands at a crossroads. While tourism offers economic benefits and the opportunity to share its

rich history with the world, it is crucial to ensure responsible and sustainable development. Balancing preservation with progress will be key to safeguarding the unique character of this captivating town. Efforts are underway to address these concerns. Initiatives focusing on community engagement, fair trade practices, and heritage conservation offer a glimmer of hope. As Stone Town navigates its future, it remains a powerful symbol of resilience, cultural richness, and the enduring spirit of its people.
